Moroccan Art has its deep roots in the the ancient traditions of an extraordinary diversity of cultures, ethnicities and religions. It is the meld and the amalgam of a complex and fascinating history where colours and light are the reflection of a vibrant and many stranded past. Golds, blues and reds are the dominant hues in works rich in sun and energy.

The profound spirituality that characterises Moroccan culture is the result of the interaction between ancient philosophies and religions. By embracing all aspects of life, spirituality has always played an important role in all art forms and in the way the representation of the real are both conceived and portrayed in the visual and decorative arts. Representations that tend to be far from the simple reproduction of the real. Illusion is not the aim; stone, wood, fabric, paint or ceramics are intended only to suggest an ideal and not to represent the actual form. Depictions of human subjects become blurred and suggested while two dimensional elaborated abstract geometric patterns, flowers and foliage lush in details,

acquire a deep and philosophical meaning. It is from these traditional concepts that the sophisticated Calligraphy has developed as an art form. Moroccan textiles, jewellery and furniture, embellished by rich intricate patterns, exquisitely designed and crafted, have always inspired and affected the other arts. Its extraordinary uniqueness, together with the profound meaning associated with the art of crafting, gives the objects a significance that surpasses its material meaning.

Elisa Martinelli

SAID QODAID Said Qodaid was born in Rabat in 1965, where he lives and works. He graduated at Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts (National Institute of Arts), Tétouan, in 1990, with a degree in Graphic Design. Qodaid’s paintings are dedicated to traditional portraiture and figurative depictions of rural and urban Moroccan life. His poetic representations convey harmony with an expressive North African gesture. He prefers to paint colourful canvases in an allegorical mode to advocate Moroccan customs. Qodaid’s painterly language is distinguished; carefully executed brush strokes achieve his realistic representations. © Renée Pfister, Art and Gallery Consultancy, London, 2013

HASSAN BOUKHARI Hassan Boukhari was born 1965 in Rabat,Morocco. His studied and trained at École Supérieur des Arts Saint-Luc, Liège, Belgium and attended further training courses led by the American Professor of Art, Howard Wexler and Art Teacher Carol Allison from the Siegfried Hahn and Howard Wexler School, Albuquerque, New Mexico. He lives in Rabat and works as a painter since 1987. Boukhari has become well-know in Morocco through his distinct canvases focusing on ethnic tradition. At first glance and from a distance his compositions appear like photographs. However, his world echoes through paint depicting local craft, portraits, interiors and picturesque villages with mainly embroidered textiles in the foreground. Meticulously executed compositions demonstrate his technical accomplishment in combination with his well-trained eye for visual perfection.

In his more recent paintings Boukhari is seeking to expand his visual language. He introduces pale coloured and black squares together with rectangles and offers the viewer a fresh attitude towards his subject. Randomly selected areas of a scarf are accentuated through layering and recessing the four-side figure on his canvases. Owing to Boukhari’s new engagement this approach is evident in the works Scarf and Belt, Scarf and Mosaic and Transparency. Now there is an increasing emphasis on different sensations. The identically painted scarf appears estranged and alienated removed from familiar earlier settings adding tempo and signalling progression.

Mustapha Amnaine was born 1957 in Marrakech, Morocco. He attained a Diploma in Applied Arts at Marrakech in 1979 and trained from 1979 – 1981 at the Regional Pedagogical Centre, Department of Fine Art, Rabat – Salé. From 1981 to 1986 he worked as Fine Art Teacher at the Cadi Ayad High School, Marrakech; and at École Normale Supérieure, Rabat. In 1986 he became Professor at the Hassan II High School, Marrakech. He has exhibited widely and his works are held in private, public and corporate collections in Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, China and France. Amnaine’s work explores the odyssey of the dreams and aspirations of his native civilisation. His depictions express metaphors inspired by ancient Moroccan myths. Freely scribbled graphs and literal fragments from old pieces of wedding acclamations are empowered and accentuated on fields of mostly bright iridescent or off-white colours. His canvases transform when writing becomes drawing or painting creating meaning differently. Faintly sketched monetary tokens relate to an old-fashioned yet still practised custom adding another layer to his narratives. He sustains movement and fluidity with lively colour splashes and the vaguely visible coinage. It permits the artist instantaneously to expose the silent space that exists between and around words.
