Greetings,
This year’s Santa Fe event marks our first collaboration with Mr. Dan Morphy and Morphy Auctions. I am excited about this for many reasons. I have worked hard for over 35 years to grow a successful business and an excellent reputation, while creating and maintaining a great marketplace for the collecting and promoting of Western and Native American artifacts. I have known Dan professionally for a long time, and I know he shares this passion for both keeping the market strong, and for bringing together collectors and enthusiasts who love these things. This was compelling to me, since I’m one of those people myself.
Melissa and I received an enormous amount of support after the announcement of the Morphy Auctions partnership, and we want to thank everyone for their kind words and enthusiasm for the future. Since the time I started all those years ago in Cody, the business of western collectibles has never stopped growing. It also, however, has never stopped changing. I have been working for decades with the best team of people ever assembled anywhere (in my humble opinion), but even our team can’t keep up anymore. It is time to join a team with not just the resources, but the desire, to take care of our western collecting community, and to bring it into the future in the ways it deserves.
Many of you have asked me about the decision to move the January Mesa Old West Show & Auction to Las Vegas in 2024 to coincide with the venerable Las Vegas Antique Arms Show. Both Dan and I believe that moving “Mesa” to Vegas is an amazing opportunity to take the winter event to the next level. On and off for a few years now, the dates of our January shows have conflicted, and our many overlapping clients are forced to choose between events. Not anymore. The Old West Show & Auction will be held in its own, separate room across from the Antique Arms Show (which features much more than just antique arms, for those who’ve never been), so that our character and sense of community are preserved, but our exposure to customers is exponentially increased. We’re all pretty excited about it.
In the meantime, though, Santa Fe! I won’t bother to try to sell everyone on a trip to the Land of Enchantment at the end of June because Santa Fe sells itself. The show and auction will be a great time to get to meet some of the Morphy crew in person, and to get to know Dan Morphy if you don’t already. We’re expecting a stellar weekend, with an exciting auction line-up, and the long-awaited return of a full-house dealer show (which we haven’t had since 2019). I believe we’re going to have a very good time.
We have long said that change is good, and we honestly believe that. We also say that “reputation matters.” We still believe that too. Thanks for your support, we hope you like the catalog.

1 - YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK STAGECOACH
This example is an original Yellowstone Observation Wagon, restored at one time in its history and showing excellent patina. All components of the coach are original except the covering to the canopy, the leather luggage boot, front boot sides and the straps. The top was restored without the side dust curtains normally seen on this wagon.The tongue set has been altered for contemporary use. There is wear which might indicate the coach has been used in some capacity in the last 50 years, but a fresh to market coach is truly a historical find.
The Yellowstone Park Transportation Company’s roots date back to it’s association with the Northern Pacific Railroad. In 1883 a stage line was created which ran from the Northern Pacific terminal in Cinnabar, Montana (later relocated at Gardiner, Montana) to and through Yellowstone Park. Yellowstone National Park Transportation Co. (YNPTCo) which was incorporated in May of 1892 had a fleet of sightseeing vehicles, the most popular being the Yellowstone Coaches, which were painted bright yellow and manufactured by the Abbot-Downing Company of Concord, New Hampshire. The larger six-horse “Tally-Ho” stagecoaches transported visitors from the train depot to the hotel at Mammoth Hot Springs. Yellowstone Observation Wagons, which had a four-horse team, were then used to take visitors on the “Grand Loop” tour through the park. This coach will not be on-site in Santa Fe but is available for preview at our facility in Denver, PA. Successful bidder is responsible for costs and arrangements for transport of the coach to its new location.

J. Michael Patrick & New West Furniture
Mike Patrick (1952-2003) a fifth generation Cody, Wyoming rancher turned furniture maker, whose father was a good friend of Thomas Molesworth, is credited with being the leader in the so-called “Cody Style” of western furniture, a driving force in the renaissance of the Molesworth-Cody furniture making influence. He spearheaded the founding of the renowned Western Design Conference in Cody in 1992.
Mike founded New West Furniture in Cody in 1986 and built it into a premier western furniture business. He was instrumental in promoting the artistry of the Western style furniture and as such was recognized for his artistry and creativity with many awards, including the Buffalo Bill Historical Center 1998 Switchback Ranch Purchase Award, the Western Design Conference People’s Choice Award in 1994 and 1995, WDC Best Exhibit Award in 1995 and Metropolitan Home Magazine Design 100 Award in 1992.

A striking elk motif sofa with Molesworth design burl wood, Chimayo upholstery in the diamond design, red leather backed cushions with white piping and studded edges. 80” wide, 40” deep and 33” tall. The wood on this sofa is excellent with some wear to the armrests, fabric is worn and leather is good but with some surface cracking.

A burl wood club chair to match the sofa with a routed bugling elk head profile on the sides, the reversible red leather and Chimayo cushions have white piping and studded accents. 33” tall x 32 - 1/2” wide and 40” deep. A keyhole style rocking arm chair with cowgirl silhouette cutout design on the back. Inspired by a Molesworth cowboy armchair that used an Edward Grigware gunfighter silhouette. A whimsical new take on the classic chair, this has hair-on cowhide arms and seat, rope edge back and studded accents. 36 - 1/2” tall x 21” wide x 37” deep overall. The wood remains excellent, the hide shows some hair loss.

NICHOLAS FIRFIRES (1917-1990)
Nicholas S. Firfires was born in Santa Barbara and grew up on ranches in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo County. A descendant of California vaqueros, Nick learned all the skills of working cowboys: breaking horses, herding cattle, and working cow ponies before he graduated from Santa Maria High School. Mr. Firfires’ other passion was drawing animals, cowboys, Native Americans, vaqueros and Western scenery. Later he wrote, “I soon realized that painting a bronc stomper breaking a horse was more important to me than doing the job myself.”
He attended the Art Center School and the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. After the war, he opened a studio in Santa Barbara and illustrated for Western magazines while working on easel paintings. His illustrations included Buck Jones, a popular comic strip and Gene Autry. He had his first one-man show in 1960, and was so successful that he turned exclusively to fine art painting, depicting both historic and contemporary Western scenes, always drawing cowboys moving toward the right.
Firfires was married to the daughter of cowboy actor Buck Jones whose comic strip Firfires drew in 50s. In 1969, he won the silver Medal Award for watercolor in the Fourth Annual Exhibit of the Cowboy Artists of America at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City. He was a founding member of the CAA. Firfires was a member of the Rancheros Visitadores riding group that also included Ed Borein and Joe DeYong, both well-known Vaquero artists of the past.

The personal spurs and a Mexican weaving belonging to the noted artist Nick Firfires (1917-1990).
The spurs are an impressive example of transitional California spurs with silver inlay and high engraved domes. The Spanish style 3” rowels and barrel chap guard are on a 1” band. Floral tooled straps have a scalloped concho which appears to be by Ed Fields. Includes original photo of Nicholas Firfires in vaquero dress in the Santa Barbara Fiesta Parade wearing the spurs with the Mexican weaving draped over the saddle.

A pair of fancy two-tone batwing chaps by Keyston Bros. of San Francisco. Hundreds of studs along the legs and pockets. Decorated with 12 slotted heart conchos. The cream colored border and pockets are scalloped, studded and laced. The tooled belt has 6 engraved sterling conchos across the front. A top of the line pair by the famed San Fransisco Saddlery.

Buck Jones was born Charles Frederick Gebhart in 1891. Witzel Studios was founded in Los Angeles by photographer Albert Walter Witzel (1879–1929) in 1909 and within a few years had become one of the city’s foremost portrait studios.

A fancy pair of vintage Vogt marked California spurs with silver inlay, silver rowel washers and tooled, lined straps adorned with sterling conchos and 3 piece buckle sets. Excellent condition but do show some light wear by Maxine.

Maxine was the daughter of Hollywood performers Buck Jones and Odile Osborne, the former wife of actor Noah Beery Jr. (1913-1994), marrying March 30, 1940, and divorcing November 19, 1965. After her divorce she married fellow artist Nicholas Firfires on August 11, 1969. Maxine and Nick were married until her death in 1990.
An American Buffalo Collection Stetson hat stamped “Made by Stetson Especially for Ben Johnson”, and bearing the Nudie’s Rodeo Tailors stamp. 4 - 1/2” brim and 5 - 1/2” crown dark brown hat shaped in his favorite style in a later “branding box”. The hatband is a 2” silk ribbon band. Hat shows wear and a few moth bites.

A gray checkered shirt with pearl snaps and Nudie’s Rodeo Tailor label. Rex writes that he wore this shirt in Arizona Cowboy, his 1950 film. Comes with a Resistol “Beaver Twenty Five” dress hat that Rex used for “dress”, size 7 - 1/4, with 4” brim and 5” crown.

b) A black hat, marked on both sides of the liner band “Black Jack O’Shea”, ribbon bound edge on the 4 - 1/4” brim, 4 - 1/4” sunken crown. Shows hard use.
c) A well worn and worn out double buscadero gun rig used by O’Shea. Floral tooled, laced edges on the 10 - 1/2” long holsters.

An original 1880’s-1890’s U. S. Army cavalry greatcoat with detachable cape. Used in John Ford westerns and numerous other films. Inside of the right sleeve on the original lining is printed “L. Levy & Son.” in black ink also is “Western Costume / Hollywood, Calif.” label and stamp, “Size 40”. Original 1884 brass eagle buttons, studio altered with added yellow accents and lining.

A nickel 2 - 1/4” badge cleverly constructed from a pocket watch case. Safety pin catch soldered to the back. Scarce circa 1940’s denim advertising banner with bright graphics of two cowboys wearing cinch back Levi’s. This is a rare version showing the “red tag”. Excellent condition, 73” x 28”.

The Levi Strauss & Co. story begins in 1853 in San Francisco, when Levi Strauss came from New York to capitalize on the allure of the Gold Rush, outfitting prospectors with his dry goods business. In 1873 Levis hit it big with Levi Strauss & Co.’s blue denim copper-riveted waist overalls, as they were originally called, the world’s first blue jeans and also known as the Levi’s 501. They were patented on May 20, 1873. Fast forward, the red tab on the right back pocket of the 501 jeans was first introduced in 1936 using with the word LEVI’S woven in all capital letters. 501 jeans with the Big E label were only produced up until 1971.
41 - BUCKAROO BY BIG SMITH ADVERTISING BANNER
A vintage circa 1940’s-50’s denim advertising banner for the Big Smith brand of jeans. Showing a colorful graphic of a cowboy bulldogging a steer. Big Smith was founded in 1916 and became famous for its Buckaroo denim. This is a very scarce advertising item, 40” tall by 38” wide, some slight scuffing to the surface.

A yellow and red wool horse blanket “Wells Fargo & Co. Express” a rare and unique Express item. Pre 1900 blanket trimmed to 77” x 80” (originally 80” x 80”). Some slight wear holes, repairs and a few minor stains but retains the vibrant colors in the stripes and lettering. Numbered 2232.

A well marked (with small round cartouche) “Visalia Stock Saddle Co. S. F. Cal.” fancy silver bridle, Sheriff’s star with Visalia stamp on the face drop. Mounted with a “Visalia - Star Steel Silver - Humane” marked spade bit.

A bridle with 3 piece face drop marked “Keyston Bros. S. F. Calif. / Sterling / 14K”, nickel and silver ferrules, conchos, and silver enhanced braided reins. An unmarked S shank bit in the style of Visalia.

Tooled California saddle with classic floral tooling, a 14 - 1/2” seat, and high cantle. The fenders are trimmed at the top and age cracking shows on the jockeys. The Nolte-Olsen makers silver plate is inlaid into the seat and the custom tooled initials are on the cantle “OH”, there is a gold H on the horn cap. This saddle has the wonderful California profile.

b) 44” long (38” to middle hole) x 1” wide horsehair hitched-braided penitentiary made belt attributed to Deer Lodge prison in Montana. Designed with bold geometric patterns in black, orange, purple and red on white ground. Leather ends and buckle appear original. Good condition, c. 1920s.
c) 32” long (28” to middle hole) x 1” wide horsehair hitched braided penitentiary made belt attributed to Walla Walla prison in Washington. Signed and dated verso “AC – 96 – 108” indicating that it was made by the acclaimed, award winning master contemporary horsehair hitcher in 1996. Designed with multicolored geometric patterns on a black field. Very fine, wearable condition, circa 1996, Alfredo’s work is considered without peer.

Weighing 3 - 1/2” pounds each, these exquisitely floral inlaid and jeweler caliber engraved Mexican spurs with the iconic Eagle and Snake Mexico National emblem feature 4 - 1/2”, 6-point oversized rowels, swinging floral shaped silver buttons and original carved and piteado threaded leathers. The shanks form the figural “8” and are inlaid with the Xicalcoliuhqui motif, more frequently referred to as “step fret” or Greek key design, a common pattern in Mesoamerican art. Classic Charro spurs with thick silver overlay of scrollwork and on one side a horsehead. On the first pair, the bands are 1 - 3/8” with rounded outsides. The shanks are an open coiled snake design and are 2”. The rowels are 3” and have 8 points. With silver & gold wire embroidered straps in a horseshoe design. The ladies pair is just slightly smaller with the same design but a 1 - 1/4” band. The straps are a more traditional piteado embroidered pair.

Mid 19th century Mexican braided horsehair bridle using natural colors. Needle knot details, flat braiding in sections on leather backing. Silver buttons reminiscent of the Southwest style with silver decoration on the brow, as well as the coin silver buckles suggestive of the Navajo style. As the Martin’s point out all the elements found in the early Mexican bridles can be found in the later prison bridles especially the Yuma bridles. Attached is a cutout figural silver inlaid bit showing an eagle attacking a cougar.

This is a rare book on its own, but this edition is enhanced and contains multiple pencil sketches throughout, along with unique hand-colored additions to the printed book illustrations, all done by Edward Borein himself.

Made and marked with the name and brand of Merle Templeton who was the Chief Liquor Control Officer in Los Angeles in the late 1930s but ultimately accused of involvement in a liquor license bribe scandal in which he allegedly conspired with at least five others to extort money from liquor retailers under threat of causing them to lose their liquor license.
b) 1/2” Bohlinmade Sterling & 10K rose gold buckle for watch or hatband with rope edge and rubies, circa 1950s.
c) Bohlinmade, Burbank, Calif let ‘er buck sterling watch or key FOB, 1 - 1/2” round, circa 1982.
d) Edward H. Bohlin, Hollywood, CA marker-marked sterling and 3-color 14k gold, 1” keeper for an “Arizona” model buckle set. Buckle also stamped with the initials CF for Charlie Feroze who was Ahmad Khan’s cousin and worked for Bohlin at his own shop in Glendale, Calif., circa 2002.

A fine oval gold quartz decorated match safe with a panel of 5 multi-colored quartz inlays set on one side and a wonderful engraved butterfly on the other. The top of the hinged lid is set with a beveled quartz stone in with varying colors and a grouping of gold flakes. Some minor cracks to the stones. Engraved bands of tulip designs enhance to the top and bottom. The safe is 2 - 1/4” x 1” x 1/2” and the side inset is 1” x 3/4”.

Sterling silver mounted saddle with gold horse heads with “Keyston Bros. / San Francisco” cartouche on the seat. Floral tooled with silver wire wrapped cantle and throat. Rope edge decorations, engraved plates, conchos, rope holders and spacers. Several of the smaller silver spacer are missing. A 15” seat with 19” tapaderos. The connector conchos are missing on the taps. Stippled edging to the silver work help the details stand out. A very nice example of a classic parade saddle. Included is a silver mounted strap with snaps that was used a breast collar for the saddle.

A pair of colorful Foster made card suit batwing chaps with studded and cutout details, a studded and tooled belt and conchos of cut-out sterling engraved stars by Randy.
b) A pair of Randy Butters silver overlaid card suit spurs with arrow shanks. Tooled straps and silver buckles.
All components are marked Butters & Foster / Makers. Complete with the original custom stand of tooled leather and wood. 24” tall overall, the chaps are 19 - 1/2”, the spurs have a 1/2” band and a 1 - 1/4” shank. The spurs are intended to sit on the leather top of the stand. A superb 2 piece set that cannot be duplicated. Two artists considered tops in their field represented in miniature.

An Edward H. Bohlin pictorial sterling silver show saddle from the estate of Cowboy Artist of America (CAA) William Moyers (1916-2010) This variation of the “Ranchero” model with some extra special tooling, is inset with a Bohlin seat shield engraved with the name of the first owner, “Amos Wellington” in a non-traditional style while the nameplate attached to the rear of the Cheyenne roll cantle has Wm. Moyers signature created in sterling. With classic Bohlin deep floral tooling, a 15 - 1/2” seat, 20” tapaderos and distinctive “Bohlin” D ring plate rigging plus pictorial fenders prominently featuring an oncoming cowboy roping a steer. The bridle is a typical California style with slide bit connectors and a triple face drop marked “Hollywood Saddlery Co. / Sterling” and mounted with diamond sterling conchos with studded edges. The matching martingale has graduated conchos. The saddle is in nice condition but the bridle does have some tender spots in the leather. Includes a 5” x 3 - 1/2” original photo of Moyers with the saddle in his studio.

An over the top unmarked parade saddle set with martingale, bridle, serapes, hip drops and tapaderos. All the plates, attachments and details are engraved, a multitude of conchos with scalloped edges adorn both skirts and fenders. The floral engraved silver plates on the taps have big sweeping leaves. The square plates on the serapes have a central flower and the padded seat is backed by a silver cantle cover. The matching silver bridle has a flying eagle bit and the breast collar has full coverage with 4 dangles per side. The horn cap has the initials S.M.L. engraved into the cap.

A fine circa 1930s two tone brown parade saddle with a 14 - 1/2” seat combining outstanding leather carving, silver engraving and silver conchos from several Bohlin catalog styles of that era including and most resembling the fabulous “Marietta”. Profusely and elaborately tooled with bucking horses, Texas longhorns, and covered wagons and lavishly mounted with silver conchos separated by silver spots. The corner mountings feature repousse figures of various rodeo scenes on all 12 sterling silver corner plates including roping, bucking horses, and bulldogging. Saddle embellished with heavy gauge sterling rope edged 3 - 3/4” cantle plus a gold horsehead on the horn and regal 21” eagle beak tapaderos. Silver sterling cantle plate initialed “CLM” for Clyde L. Myers. Matching martingale and original Bohlinmade marked corona. This is a rare and splendid example of the finest early Bohlin, Hollywood craftsmanship.

The Texas classic! The pattern No. 88 popular during the trail driving days, cataloged as “Genuine Patent O.K. Spurs”. These are the early side marked version with double straps buttons. On the center of the 1” tapered band “BUERMANN’S OK” and on the band between the double buttons is “Pat’d” The straps are correct and might be original to the spurs. Surface rust present throughout.

133 - EARLY AUGUST BUERMANN SPURS WITH GALLUP STRAPS
The scarce and desirable 1287 pattern. Marked on the band “Buermann’s Patent”, backed with 1 - 1/2” riveted leather, one with the barely visible Buermann mark. These have the large full drop 2” shanks, 2 - 1/2” rowels and replaced jingle-bobs. The rare attached straps are a dove wing style, embossed with a steerhead and a very early block stamp “GALLUP” for S.C. Gallup, Pueblo, Colorado. The conchos are flat, 2” with engraved Gallup type steerhead.

A part of Buermann’s “Patent Steel Cowboy Spur” line, the pattern 1209 is unique in style. The bands are 2” wide with a stubby 1 - 1/4” shank. These have the original nickel finish with about 90% remaining. The straps are in great condition and appear original to the spurs. Marked on the band on both spurs “Buermann’s Pat March 8 ‘79.

An early pair of California style “Target” pattern, #1479 in the Buermann catalog. Silver inlays, silver dots on the 1 - 3/8” swells, deep cast chasing. The 2 - 1/4” box shank has a barrel guard with both dot covers missing. The rowels are trimmed to 1 - 3/4”. The straps have very early type tooling and studs on the large end, one covered by a wonderful little (2 - 1/2”) domed concho with JL engraved within a circle. An intriguing pair of straight shank inlaid spurs with the appearance of Canon City engraving on a California pattern. The iron is well done and has scroll work on the iron flats. The strap buttons are flat topped with engraved inlays. The bands are 1” at the widest and the 2 - 1/2” long shank has what appears to be the original 2” rowels. The straps are marked “Ed C. Webb / Maker / Rifle, Colo.”

Card suit inlaid spurs with crude but artistic deep chasing and upturned 7/8” bands. Marked “#5410 CC” stamped under the shank. Unknown markings and traditional workmanship but attributed to Canon City based on the stamped number style that appears original to the spurs. The shanks are silver inlaid on one side and brass on the other side and have a heart rowel pin cover holding the 2”, 24 point rowel. The straps are period tooled leather with wear consistent with the spurs.

Unmarked spurs with a 5/8” band with an engraved 7/8” dome in the center with classic engraved panel and a deeply chased tile panel at the front. The shanks are 2 - 1/8” with a handmade 1 - 1/2” rowel. Decorative file work on most of the high edges.

MONTANA PRISON HITCHED HORSEHAIR BRIDLE
A vintage hitched horsehair bridle with reins from the Deer Lodge Penitentiary. Very nice colorful knots and sliders, double round to flat hitching on the cheeks. The top conchos and leather connectors are missing so the brow band and neck latch are separated but all the pieces are there. Some slight fading to the cheeks but multitude of colors on the brow and nose band along with the knots and reins are bold and bright. The bottom conchos are rimmed with horsehair which is customary, and the original throat latch is still present. The attached bit is a contemporary fancy silver overlaid Indian Chief with full headdress.

169 - NEW MEXICAN RING BIT WITH CROW INDIAN STYLE REINS
Unique wrought iron chased and hand forged 1800s Southwestern ring bit with multiple levels of brass chains and harness leather suspended from the Native American embellished slobber bar. Reins are fabricated from leather wrapped with red and green trade cloth as was customarily used by the Crow tribe.

A very showy and robust made bit and bridle This style of Chilean bit is called a “Copa”. The bridle itself is totally made of silver, which is characteristic of Chilean bridles. The chain mail type construction of the cheeks is 7/8” and is connected by hinged hangers and round floral conchos. The decorative brow and forehead piece is centered by a cast flourish. The large bit has a 3 - 1/2” concho and a 5 - 3/4” x 3” slobber bar hanger.

A wonderful example of the desirable G. S. Garcia pattern No. 16 “Rattlesnake” silver inlaid spurs. Cut out bands and well marked inside the bands G. S. GARCIA in one and ELKO, NEV. in the other. The bands are 1 - 1/4” outside and a 1/2” on the inside. The 2 - 1/2” shanks are topped with a barrel style chap guard, all with silver inlaid stripes. The engraving is crisp with even blueing to the iron. The complimentary contemporary conchos on the studded straps have central eagles and John Estrada style engraving overall. This model is prominently featured in “Bit and Spur Makers in the Vaquero Tradition” by Ned and Jody Martin on page 225.

178 - BRAIDED WALLA WALLA PRISON HORSEHAIR BRIDLE
A flat braided horsehair headstall in the favorite colors of the Walla Walla, Washington prison. Orange and black with some white accents and lots of hitched knots and tassels. The reins are round braided and the romel has an unusual 3 piece popper. This bridle was constructed without a nose band. The bit is a spot decorated ring bit in bare gray steel and attached with snaps.

179 - CANON CITY HORSEHAIR BRIDLE & BIT
A Colorado State Penitentiary braided horsehair bridle done in black and natural in the classic style. Hitched buttons and sliders with full tassels. The zig-zag design stands out against the black background. Traditionally decorated with stars and walker engraving on the conchos and buckles. The superb attached Canon City gal leg half-breed bit has engraved inlays and domes to match the bridle hardware. The leather shows age cracking and the horsehair shows very slight age loss.

180 - DEER LODGE HITCHED HORSEHAIR BRIDLE
A finely executed and unusual figural design with arrows across the brow band on this Maine Penitentiary bridle. The bridle has fine woven or braided calfskin knots, supports and slides. Celluloid rings as decoration including on the edges of the domed glass dog head conchos. Double round cheeks with diamond patterns, natural color tassels and the correct iron bit. The styling of the facing arrows across the brow is reminiscent of designs seen in Navajo weavings of the same period.

181 - YUMA TERRITORIAL PRISON HORSEHAIR BRIDLE
A fabulous Yuma hitched bridle with American flags on both the reins and romal, diamond swells on the brow and nose bands and 1 - 1/2” wides flat cheek panels. The double head braided horsehair head strap is black and white and matches the throat latch and reins. The buttons are intricate and complicated diamond designs done over wood. The bright colors unique to Yuma, pinks, blues and reds make this a striking example. The conchos show classic prison engraving and the attached bit, though showing more use than the bridle, is prison made and matches nicely.

183 - KEYSTON BROS. SILVER AND GOLD PARADE SADDLE
Multiple Gold horse heads over engraved sterling silver on leather done in California style floral tooling, this is an ornate show piece with 20” tapaderos, deep jeweler cut engraving, a gold standing horse on the horn cap and a pair of matching sterling and gold horse head covered stirrups. A equally showy matching breast collar is included. Set with an early type hand engraved seat plate “Made by Keyston Bros. / San Francisco”. The rear cantle plate is crudely engraved “JOS. SCLAFANI”. An exceptional example of the workmanship of the noted California maker. This saddle has a 14 - 1/2” seat, and silver cantle binding. Includes a copy of a photo of Joe Sclafani, the original owner riding the saddle in the Macy’s parade.

Started in 1868 the Keyston Bros. were makers of fine whips and lashes but in 1906 they moved into the saddle making business and bought out the J.C Johnson Co., Saddlery. Then in 1912 they purchased the famous Main & Winchester & Stone Saddlery then F. S. Johnson Co., Saddlery and in 1914 they purchased Harpham & Jensen Leather and Shoe Findings Company. They acquired W. Davis & Sons in 1925 and became the largest manufacturer of saddles & harness on the West Coast.
Marked “Ricardo / Nickel Silver” these youth size silver parade spurs have the engraved sterling silver panels set with red stones (one missing) and topped with a gold horsehead. The silver button covers are also set with stones. The straps are scalloped and studded floral carved by Buddie Foster

Classic black, fully floral carved Edward H. Bohlin, Hollywood, Calif “Dick Dickson, Jr” parade saddle with 100% matching Bohlinmade Bridle, Bit and Martingale. The Dickson Jr was one of the most popular parade styles built by the illustrious saddlemanker to the stars and a favorite of the Rancheros Visitadores on their annual Santa Barbara trail rides. It is built on a Miles City tree with 13” swells, 15” seat. and 3 - 1/2” fully silvered cantle with twisted rope edge, solid silver gullet and swells. The saddle is lavishly adorned with heavy gauge sterling diamond and half diamond conchos, silver spots and features intricately engraved corner plates on the skirts, fenders and 21” long monkey nose Tapaderos. The fully matching accessories continue the diamond theme with the bridle attached to a Bohlinmade and marked half breed bit with split reins, silver ferrules and diamond shaped silver slider and romal. Saddle includes a black and white wool Corona. In fine rideable condition, circa 1940s. This sterling silver saddle set was made for noted Palm Springs resident and Naval Commander “Earl E. Gibbs” and has his name in the seat plate and cantle plate along with E.E.G. in gold.

187 - HOLLYWOOD SADDLERY SILVER PARADE SADDLE
Black floral carved, square skirted, silver mounted Southern California Parade Saddle with fully matching bridle, breast collar and regal tapaderos made by the renowned Hollywood Saddlery originally located at the iconic corner of Sunset & Vine and founded in the late 1930s by Major Monte Stone and Harry Soulages, Ed Bohlin’s ex-manager. The style is very reminiscent of Bohlin’s “Lee Douglas” model with intricately engraved and artistically arranged heavy gauge sterling silver swell caps, corner plates and cantle cover entirely bordered by alternating round and diamond conchos separated by twin silver spots. All buckles on the bridle and face-drop are stamped “Hollywood Saddlery”, the S shank silver mounted bit is marked “Martin”. The parade ensemble includes the original black and white wool Corona pad. Overall in fine condition, circa 1940s.

Hollywood Saddlery was formed in the late 1930s by Major Monte Stone who opened the shop at Ed Bohlin’s & old Sunset and Vine location at 6309 Sunset Blvd. The Major was later joined by Harry Soulages, Bohlin’s ex-manager who persuaded several other Bohlin saddle makers and silver workers to join him. In the mid 1940s, the store closed for two months of renovations, re-opening in November under a new ownership team comprised of Carl Swanstrom of the Bear Brand Ranch in San Juan Capistrano and Les Yaap, an existing 5-year employee. Les became the new manager with Andy Gomez doing custom leather while Oscar Arroe and Carl Weidhoffer handled silver and custom engraving. With business booming but space in short supply, the partners decided to move to an expanded 3200 sq ft location at 910 North La Cienega in the summer of 1949 -- just a few blocks from Beverly Hills. The Saddlery, as its name implies, specialized in serving the Southern California Horseman stocking a dazzling array of fancy parade saddles, spurs, bridles, and handsomely designed leather boots. Swanstrom was an expert horseman with a background as an actor in western films which prompted many local celebrities to patronize their popular establishment. The quality of work is very similar to the flashy So Cal style popularized by the Hollywood Cowboys and exemplified by Edward H Bohlin. It was not uncommon for a Southern California silversmith to work for several of the local makers as tempers flared and many of the finest engravers and saddle makers often drifted from saddlery to saddlery due to personality conflicts, or better pay.
188 - TONY LAMA “EL REY II” CUSTOM, ORNATE COWBOY BOOTS WITH ROUTE 66 HISTORY
An incredibly rare, one-of-a-kind pair of Tony Lama hand-made cowboy boots from the “EL REY” series. The only known extant pair of Tony Lama “EL REY II” boots that we are aware of. Custom ordered from the Luskey’s 1966 catalog by an entrepreneurial Route 66 service station owner named Ted Jenkins in Vernal, Utah, who was seeking a roadside attraction to rival his competitors’ dinosaurs and other charms. This particular pair are as they are described in the original catalog, which advertised the “EL REY (the king) II” boots as, “The finest boots in the world featuring a premium grade black calf on the tops and vamps… gold leaf inlaid in your name… 54 carats precious stones [with] 110 diamonds, 80 rubies and 4 star sapphires.” Also featuring engraved sterling heel caps and trim, along with 12” long pull straps inlaid in gold leaf with “Tony Lama” on the inner strap, and personalized with “TED J” on the outer strap. Fine, unworn condition; circa 1966.

The “EL REY II” boots were advertised back then as “Made to measure only” with a “90 day delivery,” and were priced at the kingly sum of $10,000 (double the price of the 1961 “EL REY I” pair). The most recent version of the Tony Lama series is the “EL REY IV,” created in 2011 for the company’s 100 year anniversary and originally priced at $50,000.
Ted and Betty Jenkins opened their first Beeline Service Station outside of Vernal, Utah in 1957 in the burgeoning Route 66 road trip era. Ted erected a giant flashing neon sign that read: “SEE OUR FAMOUS $10,000.00 COWBOY BOOTS”. He showcased them in a trailer, installed a turnstile, and for 25 cents you could leave with a decal proudly declaring you “Saw the world famous pair [of] $10,000 cowboy boots at Vernal, Utah / Ted’s Beeline Ser.”
189 - CUSTOM MATCHING JEWELRY SET WITH MORENCI TURQUOISE AND ROLEX WATCH
Vintage custom, Morenci turquoise, six-piece matching Zuni set, through the collector and Zuni Pueblo trader C.G. Wallace (1898-1993). All unmarked except for the watchband, but included C.G. Wallace letter states they are Roger Skeet conchos and Jose Bowannie inlay. A hallmarked watchband by Fred Thompson is mounted on an authentic Rolex Oyster Speedking watch (watch is not working). An extraordinary, one-of-a-kind ensemble, expertly done with exquisite and rare stones from a long-closed mine. Lot includes copy of 1960 Wallace letter regarding the set.
a) Concho belt with seven oval conchos with starburst design inlay and matching butterfly-style inlaid buckle, all mounted on a black leather belt. Conchos measure 3 - 1/2”” x 2 - 7/8”” each, buckle measures 4”” x 2 - 7/8”, belt is 34” to the center hole.
b) Rolex Speedking watch on a custom inlay band by Fred Thompson that was obviously made to match the rest of the set. 6 - 1/2”” inside circumference, with Thompson hallmark.
c) Matching inlaid concho bracelet. Concho measures 3 - 1/2”” x 27/8””. The bracelet has an inside length of 6””, excluding the 1 - 3/8”” gap.
d-e) Pair of inlaid rings designed to match each other and the rest of the set. Sizes 8.75 and 9.
f) Bolo tie with matching inlaid concho and fancy tips on a black leather braided cord. Concho measures 2 - 7/8”” x 2 - 3/8””; tips are 2 - 7/8””. Included in the lot is a note stating that the watch is the only marked piece and is Fred Thompson at Tobe Turpen Trading Post in Gallup. Also included is a photocopy of a letter from C.G. Wallace dated November 3, 1960, which details how unique the set is with its top quality turquoise, and notes that it is unlikely another set will be made.

A fine European-cut, Lakota beaded coat on native tanned hide with horse motif. Five pair of colorful beaded horses: blue and red on front, and white, burgundy, and yellow & blue on verso. Great beading details, such as single bead eyes and colored ears. Five beaded pair of horseshoe tracks adorn the front, in shades of green, purple and blue. Heavily fringed and accented with a beaded diagonal design of yellow, red and aqua blue. Long leather drops hang from the pony tracks and the back. Wonderfully visual and unique. 29” long with fringe; circa early 20th century. Some stiffening of the hide on one side, the rest is supple.

Northern Plains Native tanned elk hide stitched with red trade cloth panels beaded in white strips with a striking blue and yellow border, long string decorations with blue beads along with edge fringe and bottom fringe. Inside shows the remnants of a painted geometric design. 88” x 10 - 1/2” wide with 29” fringe at bottom. Some moth damage to the wool, sweat stains to the underside of the hide. Shows well on its custom plexiglass wall mount.

A later, but traditional angled wood pipe stem with the edges decorated with nickeled studs, painted designs of crosses, pony tracks and river lines. A beaded sleeve with wool backing and deer hair trim. 19” long. The Catlinite pipe head is incised with a cross on the tip. 4” long. The tamper has a beaded wrap with fringed edges, 12” long.

197 - A LAKOTA BEADED BRIDLE
A very nice circa 1880’s-1890 fully beaded bridle with bright designs of stripes and steps done in blue, yellow and red on a white field. The crossover face drop features a heart with a yellow cross. Brow and nose bands are connected with silk ribbon decorations and copper conchos. The silk edge binding has worn. Featured in the book “Horses and Bridles of the American Indians” under the banner Lakota Beaded Bridles. From the book: “Beaded bridle with Cross Straps, Canvas, glass beads, silk edge binding, brass bosses. With loss of their buffalo herds, Lakota artists were forced to substitute canvas for the former use of leather in everything from tipi covers, to this rare bridle construction.” One of the more intricate and detailed beaded bridles we have seen. Comes on a custom made stand.

201 - WESTERN GREAT LAKES BALL HEADED CLUB
An important and fine and example of an Ojibwa carved club with elaborate and finely-executed incised floral and figural decoration on the flat-sided handle and the ball. The ball shows use, but the patina is overall smooth and even and the intricate incised designs remain deep and pronounced. Almost two feet long by more than half-a-foot across at its widest, it measures 22” long overall, and 7” across at the head. A great early and decorative example, with period use and striking color and style. From a notable, private collection.

Exceptional circa 1800 spontoon blade pipe tomahawk. Haft is file branded overall with 6” of finely dyed and and tightly woven porcupine quillwork adjacent to the blade. 4” forward of mouthpiece there is a hole drilled for attachment of a decorative adornment. The stem is drilled for smoking and gun barrel style bowl shows carbon evidence of being heavily smoked. Large 12” iron blade displays early characteristics found in post Revolutionary War blades traded to Indians. It is hand forged and pressed together in early style below a teardrop shaped eye. Blade bears a Hudson Bay touch mark “HB” on right side of blade.

Circa 1860’s-1870’s Indian pipe tomahawk with classic western head, elongated bowl, and heavily filed chevron on the shoulder. Measures 23” overall with a 11” blade. Cast German Silver blade has a 4” cutting edge, straight forward edge with slightly flared following edge. Bowl and outside eye area show rocker etched designs of tipis. Haft its most likely of Osage orange, and exhibits 4 diamond and striped pewter inlays on each side with a pewter mouthpiece. Haft is drilled for smoking. Very good overall, the blade has nice, unpolished oxidized patina and the haft pewter has turned a dark gray.

Gunstock style war club decorated with green pigment, hot branding of triangles on the butt portion, the body decorated with brass tacks. A notched spear point fitted to the stock. This is a fine example of the style. This type of very lethal weapon was believed to have been developed based on the Native tribes encounters with European weapons but some historians believe they were designed in this form much earlier. 25” long by 15” wide at the shoulder with a 5 - 1/4” long steel point.

A mid-1800’s Native American painted pictorial hide shield with central bird figure, human heads, animals and crosses decorating a hide covering. Sinew wrapped horsehair drops across the top quarter. The hide shield cover is laid on the original circular and convex buffalo hide shield, most likely the heavy hump hide. One of the finest shields we have come across and great example of the art created by the Native American tribes. The pictograph illustrations are strong and colors remain vibrant though worn. Yellow, red and blue pigment, 18” diameter and 3” deep. 2 missing hair drops, remnants of decorations along the top.

206 - AN EARLY PLATEAU BEADED CRADLEBOARD
An exceptional 1880’s beaded cradleboard and cover, constructed in the distinctive shape of the Northwest tribes. The top is done in colorful flowers that stand out against a light blue background. The finely detailed beading extends to the sides and hood with flowers and vines on red trade cloth. Native tanned hide backing has central decorative fringe across the width. 38” long x 15 - 1/2” wide x 8” high.
207 - AN EXCEPTIONALLY FINE CHEYENNE BEADED CRADLE
A circa 1870-1880 fully beaded cradle with blue beaded background on Native tanned buffalo hide. Decorated in a traditional geometric motif in colorful, yellow, red, dark blue, and green patterns. Mounted to wood slats studded with brass tacks. Has an old inscription “J. A. Harding” on the inside lining. Beaded cover is 25” long with the sticks being 40 - 1/2” tall.
208 - A PERCUSSION INDIAN TACK GUN
An important Parker Field & Co. percussion conversion Northwest trade gun, profusely tacked with rows of brass decorations. Classic 3 screw serpent or “Dragon” side plate fastened with wood screws. Oversized trigger guard (as was noted by a Hudson’s Bay representative “The Indians would like to have the trigger guard larger, it is usual to draw the trigger with two fingers which our guns will not admit of”.) The lock-plate marked is “Parker / Field & Co. / 1864” barrel stamped with London proofs and the number 24. Fitted with a 42” barrel, 58” overall, brass butt plate. Standard smooth bore. This is one on the finest examples of a decorated Native American trade rifle we have come across. These original trade guns were made especially for trade companies including the American Fur Company, Hudson Bay and others.

The holster is a double loop, edge laced, floral tooled example with clear mark on the top loop, made to fit an automatic pistol.

219 - PATRIOTIC PAINTING OF GENERAL ZEBULON PIKE
Oil on canvas board of Zebulon Montgomery Pike (1779-1813) Brigadier General with historic Santa Fe and New Mexico ties. He was a noted explorer after whom Pikes Peak in Colorado in named. The painting consists of vignettes of an Indian battle and gold mining with a central portrait topped by an American flag. The lettering on the painting notes November 1806, that is the year he lead 2 expeditions first through Louisiana Purchase Territory then into New Mexico and Texas. 29” x 36” and framed to 32 - 1/2” x 39 - 1/2”. Signed and dated lower right. Possibly “A.A. Poe ? Nov. 1906”. Backed with canvas with some restoration present. Pike was killed in the Battle of York in April of 1813.

A pair of well marked saddle pommel holsters for Colt Navy revolvers with strong “Main & Winchester / San Francisco” oval cartouche on both sides of the connecting straps. Decorative leather work shows these were most likely made for the civilian market by M&W. Brass muzzle caps are attached with 2 screws, and are 2 - 3/8” long. Shell flaps have a stitched 5 point star and show repair to the surface. The holsters measure 14”, the flaps are 12” by 6” wide. The seams are separating and the connecting leather for the flaps is separated, but as a whole they have seen very little use. Both tabs are present but one is missing about half.

There is a matching lithograph of men, both printed in 1888 by A. Hoen & Co. An original doorknob, key and fob and door hinges from the famous Irma Hotel in Cody, Wyoming. Known as Buffalo Bill’s “Original Hotel in the Rockies” Cody built the hotel in 1902 and named it after his daughter Irma. The bronze and brass door knob is from a guest room and has a high relief buffalo head artistically rendered on the face. A pair of fancy brass door hinges, each each 4 - 1/2” x 4 - 1/4” open, and a “Irma Hotel / Cody, Wyoming / 57” brass fob with a door key. The fob is 5 - 1/2” x 1”.

A decorative gift made to resemble a dagger, built from what appears to be a staff topper and a hair-on deer leg complete with dew claws and hoof. A pair of coin silver inlaid spurs in the style of the early Southern California makers. Sometimes called a “transitional”, these have all the hallmarks of a traditional California pattern. A Native tanned hide toy or miniature tipi cover with painted buffalo hunt scene. Quill and tin cone dangles decorate the hide. Some cracking and minor tears to the edges. The pigment does show some flaking and loss but is still strong. Tack holes present at the edges, the hide has been glued to the fabric with about 1” round spots in several places. The hide itself measures 24” x 47” and is mounted on fabric covered board and framed to 34” x 57” These lodge models were not only decorative but normally tell a story. This example shows a hunters on horseback taking buffalo.

Tompkin’s
Charles H. Tompkins ran his Real Wild West and Frontier Exhibition between 1911 and 1912 and later joined with Al F. Wheeler to present the Tompkins’ Wild West and Cooper-Whitley Circus during the 1913-1914 season. Though the shows were not well known they were famous for the great advertising they presented during their run.

312 - BUTCH CASSIDY & THE SUNDANCE KID WANTED POSTER
An excellent example of the scarce 1904 Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid “$2,000 REWARD. / CIRCULAR No. 3. / DENVER, Colo., November 14th, 1904” a circular, poster, flyer or broadside issued by Pinkerton’s National Detective Agency. Pinkerton’s Agency issued this two-sided reward flyer after the robbery of the First National Bank of Winnemucca, Nevada on September 19th, 1900, during which $32,640 was stolen. “At least $31,000 was in $20 gold coin; $12,00 in $5 and $10 gold coin; the balance in currency, including one $50 bill.” The poster features photographs of George Parker, alias “Butch” Cassidy and Harry Longbaugh, alias “Kid” alias “The Sundance Kid”. This was the desirable version without O. C. Hanks. Folds evident on the paper, which appear to be from the original mailing.
