Inspired by Goodey: Fashions of the 19th Century at Historic Speedwell N
ineteenth century America experienced a sudden explosion of fashion interest. In 1830, The Goodey’s Lady’s Book made its début as the first magazine specifically geared towards women, and its array of beautifully colored fashion plates, clothing instructions, and free dress patterns made it the country’s most popular magazine by 1836. Goodey’s garment examples and helpful fashion hints inspired women from every walk of life to work towards beauty and a fashion forward style that carried on for over half a century. This new American interest in style created one of the most bombastic eras of fashion in the history of the United States. From corsets and mutton sleeves to elaborate bonnets and bustles, join Historic Speedwell in Morristown on Saturday, August 29 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for a journey through the styles inspired by one of America’s first official fashion icons, The Goodey’s Lady’s Book. The show begins promptly at 1 p.m. For more information, please call 973-285-6535.

Charcoal Burning At The Cooper Gristmill Come see charcoal made by the traditional method in a three-day event at the Cooper Gristmill in Chester Township. The program takes place Friday through Sunday, July 17 to 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Charcoal was the world’s first industrial fuel and was used in the early Morris County iron industry. Watch how charcoal is made by slowly smoldering cordwood to remove moisture and volatile compounds. This leaves nearly pure carbon that burns about twice as hot as wood. The process involves carefully constructing a pile of seasoned wood, covering it with leaves or hay, and a layer of dirt or sod. It is then lit and burned with a controlled air supply until the wood has been converted to charcoal. This FREE event starts behind the Cooper Gristmill Visitors Center. For thousands of years before the pioneers arrived in New Jersey, the Lenape Indians lived in these forests, hunting for deer and wood buffalo, living www.morrisparks.net

Meet our Monarchs:
“Royalty” of the Butterflies!
www.morrisparks.net
Each September, monarch butterflies begin an incredible southern journey that takes them over 2,000 miles to the mountains of Central Mexico. After spending the winter in Mexico, these butterflies head north in March of 2010, following the sprouting milkweed plants just as their greatgrandparents did last spring! If you’re amazed that fragile butterflies can achieve such a feat, then join the staff of Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area in Montville all summer to learn more. At the Mission Monarch Search program, become “citizen scientists” and help search the butterfly garden to tally the number of monarch eggs, caterpillars, chrysalids, and adults present on one or all of three summer Wednesdays: July 22, August 5 and 19 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Learn how to recognize the monarch in all stages of its metamorphosis and how to report monarch sightings on the Internet to contribute to important scientific research. These programs are $1 per person and open to all ages.
Monarch Festival
Wish the monarchs well on their southbound journey on Saturday, September 12 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Fourth Annual Meet a Monarch Festival. The festival takes place during the monarch’s peak migration time. Tour the butterfly garden and look for live monarchs from egg to adult as well as the many other creatures that depend on milkweed. Travel through the lifecycle stations and experience the metamorphosis of an adult monarch firsthand, try some butterfly origami, and listen to live music and stories as you celebrate the life and legacy of these amazing animals. All ages are welcome! The entrance fee is $4 per person. For more information, please call 973-334-3130.
