Solar energy – the clever alternative ■ In the leisure-time sector and especially in caravans, where the onboard battery is already available as energy storage, solar technology is the optimal supplement for the onboard power supply.
Setup and function : A solar power system has a very simple setup. One or several solar modules are mounted on the roof. From there, a connecting cable first runs to the solar charge controller inside the caravan and then to the already existing onboard battery. During light irradiation, the solar cell generated power is supplied to the connected onboard battery via the solar charge controller. This process continues until the controller recognises a fully charged battery and interrupts the power flow. By this, the control ensures optimal battery charging at all times. By the way, all other charging possibilities already existing at the battery (charger, motor charging) will remain unchanged.

years and especially suitable for mobile application. Some manufacturers of solar modules only offer a limited guarantee when modules are used in caravans. We do not offer these types of modules, on principle. All attached and surfacemounted parts must also be suitable for the rough application in caravans without any restriction. Therefore, we use water pressure resistant cable ducts and highquality brackets of polyurethane (not ABS) with an extremely long service life. The solar control was also especially designed for caravans and offers some important additional functions such as gel / acid / AGM changeover or charging of a second battery. All solar modules offered by us are stateof-the-art products. Depending on the module type, there are also very specific advantages. These should be taken into consideration depending on the setup and application conditions. For further information please see page 4 !

Solar Power Systems ■ Solar systems are among the most prudential purchases regarding caravans. Solar power is free of maintenance and charge. It is generated without noise and turns a caravan into a leisure vehicle that no longer is dependent on the mains. Solar systems of BÜTTNER ELEKTRONIK are easy to mount and simply connected to the existing onboard battery.
Complete solar systems All complete systems are supplied with suitable spoiler profiles and a solid roof duct. These components from high-quality PUR plastic are protected against harmful UV radiation and extremely weather-proof. The solar modules are affixed to the spoiler profiles. This allows the system to be taken down when you change your vehicle. The fixture itself is affixed to the roof with a special adhesive set, which has been tested and approved by the TÜV (German Technical Inspection Agency). The adhesive method has the advantage that no holes have to be bored into the roof.

Which solar system corresponds best with your individual requirements ? For a simpler presentation, we introduced symbols and assigned them to the pertinent system. It will thus be very easy for you to make the right decision. Developed specifically for caravans: Solar modules for caravans are subject to different stresses than those for residential systems ! For example, mobile applications require outlets to be resistant to hydrostatic pressure (airstream) and soldered connections to be specifically carried out to withstand vibrations while travelling. Also, the framework structure requires a special design to compensate for any potential distortions and developing lifting forces. Suitable for marine use: The individual components are saltwaterresistant. Low structural height: The solar module is set either directly onto the roof surface without any substructure ( FLAT LINE ) or it is adhesively bonded with a flat mount ( BASIC LINE ). 40-cell design: Solar module with a high number of cells to compensate for performance losses due to direct bonding. Walk-on modules: Solar modules can be walked on if they are glued on over the entire surface.
BASIC LINE Starter sets
12 V · 20 Wp | 40 Wp | 75 Wp
■ The 20 W starter set is optimal for use in mobile campers or caravans for year-round battery maintenance and for operating a caravan manoeuvring systems. For greater power and to compensate for smaller consumers, the 40 W starter set or the 75 W starter set is the ideal solution.
Decision-making aids
As all our solar complete systems, the BASIC LINE sets are ready to install with adhesive roof bracket, cable duct and a high-quality solar charge controller. Both systems stand out due to their low weight and high-quality workmanship at an very affordable starter price.
Low weight: Weight benefits versus other solar systems of identical performance. Small surface / high performance: Extremely high performance due to selected raw material. Performance benefits with partial shading: More resistant to partial shading due to longitudinal strip technology. Performance benefits in unfavourable weather conditions: Test winner – best solar system in unfavourable weather and with partial cloud cover ( Reisemobil International – Issue 10/2012 )

Which solar system should I choose? Bonding and brackets TÜV-inspected + approved
MT Complete Solar Systems ■ Mono-crystalline solar modules have been used for many decades. Due to this long practical experience they are one of the most long-lived energy sources available. All modules have a robust aluminium frame and are protected against weather influences with special glass. To achieve the full output in all application areas, these modules must be ventilated from below. The bracket to be affixed with adhesive will ensure this. The installation height of approx. 7 cm should be taken into consideration. In most cases, however, this is not any higher than an existing standard skylight. When planning it should also be observed that any already mounted components (SAT etc.) do not shade the solar plate. These modules provide particularly high efficiencies even in unfavourable weather conditions due to the novel MultiCell technology where 72 solar cells are used on one module.
Bonding and brackets TÜV-inspected + approved
Bonding and brackets TÜV-inspected + approved
MT CIS Complete Solar Systems ■ One of the most outstanding features of CIS solar modules is their absolutely high-quality finishing. This module series also has a robust mounting frame and special glass on the back. This and the slightly bigger surface area are the reasons that these modules are slightly heavier than conventional standard modules. An advantage is that due to their longitudinal strip technology they react a lot less sensitive to partial shading than any other module type. Especially in mobile applications the energy yield is a lot higher since it is not always possible to prevent – depending on the location – that branches of trees, a mounted roof-case or the SAT equipment partially shade the solar modules. The installation height of 7 cm should also be considered here. This, however, should not create any problems.
MT Power Line Complete Solar Systems ■ MT POWER LINE solar modules achieve an extremely high efficiency level. This allows for a great solar output even with restricted space conditions. For developing their full performance in all areas of application, modules are to be ventilated from below which is ensured by adhesive, TÜV-approved solar mounts. This range of solar modules is also produced in accordance with our stringent quality standards to guarantee permanent use on the caravan even in harsh conditions. The anodised housing frame is particularly robust, while the front glass is specially hardened and so highly pervious to light. As a result, the modules are optimally protected even against hail and high winds. As with all complete systems, the POWER LINE series is supplied as a set with all accessories required for the installation.
MT Ultraflat Complete Solar Systems Bonding and brackets TÜV-inspected + approved
■ These solar modules can be affixed directly onto the vehicle’s roof with adhesive. We only produce these solar modules with a higher number of cells (40 cells instead of the conventional 36), so that there is no output loss even in Southern holiday regions where due to the vehicle insulation the heat can only be discharged poorly and therefore the solar output drops. This series is mostly used when clearance heights must be observed and/ or it should be possible to walk on the modules. The modules are available in two versions: As ‘FG’ with solid glass surface – suitable for all level roof surfaces – as well as ‘FL’, which is equipped with a Teflon foil and therefore can be bent slightly in longitudinal direction ( 30 mm maximum) and affixed to slightly curved roof surfaces.

What charging performance is necessary ? The greater the charging performance, the quicker the onboard battery is recharged. Chargers that are too small do not achieve a full recharge in case of short downtimes. If you have to recharge 90Ah with a 10 Ampere charger, you’ll need at least 9 hours – provided that it does not consume power simultaneously. If you have 20 Ampere charging current, you can fully recharge in only 4.5 hours. As a guideline, a minimum of 10 per cent of the Ah capacity should be defined as charging current.

MT inverters: 230 Volt onboard ■ MT inverters are ‘Made in Germany’ and ensure an optimal supply of 230 Volts always and everywhere. Inverters of the SI model range operate with pure sine wave voltage and are therefore also suitable for the most sensitive consumers (e.g. coffee machines by Jura, Saeco or Senseo etc.). The MT 300 SI is already sufficient to operate TV/SAT, video units, DVD, computers or battery chargers. For larger consumers, inverters with 1000 watts or 1500 watts are available. All units are capable of handling overloads and are equipped with whisper fan and all monitoring and switchoff functions. The operating unit with display functions can be removed and mounted in the vehicle as remote control. An integrated load detection switches the units to power saving mode when not used and, if required, also completely off. Technical Data

The large inverters have an optional mains switchover function. These units detect when external shore power is available and fully automatically switch over. As long as shore power is available, the inverter is switched off and shore power is supplied to the interior sockets. When shore power is no longer available, the inverter can be started and the same sockets are now supplied with inverter power. All inverters are supplied ready for connection with plug and battery cable (1.2m).
Air-conditioning during driving Air-conditioning systems have an extremely high power consumption. For this reason, a very powerful inverter must be used. Which inverter should I use ? Inverters produce an AC voltage of 230V out of 12V onboard voltage. Commercial end devices therefore can be operated via the normal onboard battery. Inverters are available in various output sizes, and depending on the rated input, the appropriate inverter must be selected. For smaller devices such as TVs or SAT receivers, the MT 300 SI can suffice. Coffee machines or hairdryers may need a more powerful device, depending on the rated input. MT 1500 SI

Onboard supply batteries Which battery is suitable for which use ? Normal starter batteries are not designed for cyclical loads and not recommended as onboard batteries. Cycle-proof batteries are ideal for the loads generated during discharging/charging operation. We distinguish between batteries with bound electrolyte as gel or AGM batteries and the classic liquid/acid batteries. Gel and AGM batteries are leak-proof and completely maintenance-free over their whole service life. Both types of batteries are highly cycle-proof under the required charging conditions. Gel batteries can even be discharged deeply for a short period of time, always under the condition that they are immediately recharged. AGM batteries of the same size have a slightly higher output and can deal with even very high charging /discharging currents for a short period of time. On principle, all cycle-proof batteries are suitable for solar systems.
Higher battery capacity ■ If you want to expand your battery capacity, you could just connect additional batteries in parallel. The pre-requisite is that the batteries are of the same design (gel, AGM or liquid acid) and capacity. Also, no old battery should be connected to a new one. Additionally, it should be checked whether the existing charger is sufficient for the higher capacity.
The correct charger ■ In order to ensure that onboard batteries reach the expected cycle and service life, the charging must be optimal. When changing to a different battery type, it must be checked if the charger is designed for this technology or if the output is sufficient or should be increased. Output tables and charger that can be switched to all battery types can be found on page 6.
Fuel gauge for the battery ■ How much power is left in the onboard batteries ? Similar to a fuel gauge, the battery computer MT 4000 iQ displays the exact battery capacity remaining in Ah. All incoming and outgoing currents are measured so the electronic system can use these values to show the exact capacity on the display. It also indicates how much power is currently going into the battery or taken out – see page 10.

The onboard battery is responsible for supplying power when the caravan is not provided with shore power. Not the easiest of tasks given the increasing number of electricity consumers operated on board and the limited battery capacity available. It is therefore all the more important that the onboard battery is quickly and optimally charged on short drives, and with the right characteristic for longer drives. In practice, however, this is not so easy since the onboard battery is charged not directly by the generator, but in parallel by the starter battery – via a cut-off relay. As a consequence, the charging current is kept to a minimum and the voltage is all wrong. The result is that the charging process takes an unreasonably long time or proves inadequate even on longer drives, because the generator cannot provide the voltage level required for gel or AGM batteries. This is remedied by the MT IOUO charger booster. Depending on the version, it takes 25 amp or 45 amp from the starter battery, takes this output to the required voltage level (battery type adjustable) and so guarantees quick and safe charging of the onboard batteries.

MT Display and Switch Programme

Always in the know ! ■ Nothing’s more ideal than when everything in the camper van or caravan can be controlled and monitored from a central point. The inverter is switched on with the press of a button, all fluid levels are checked at a glance. How much power does the solar system provide and what about the capacity of the onboard battery ? The MT display and switch programme from BÜTTNERELEKTRONIK lets you set up your very own, individual control centre that can later be upgraded where necessary. This allows you to check the output of the solar power system with one glance at the MT solar remote display, while the battery computer MT 4000 iQ shows how much power is left in the onboard batteries. This device should interest even those who already own a camper van or caravan featuring a range of level indicators and switches. Contrary to the often integrated indicators of the caravan
manufacturers, the battery computer calculates the exact fill level of the onboard battery (in Ah and %) and can therefore tell you exactly when the lights will go out.
For mobile use – ‘made in Germany’ All displays were specially developed for use in camper vans and caravans. The LCD thermometer, for instance, not only shows the current inside and outside temperatures, but also stores the lowest value. An important aspect for all who are out and about in the autumn and winter months and want to gauge whether and when the septic tank is about to freeze up. All measuring devices were designed as installation units (installation frame supplied), have an illuminated display, and are compatible with the switch and fuse programme.
MT 4000 iQ Battery computer ■ Easy-to-use combination device displays voltage, charge/discharge current, and the remaining battery capacity in Ah and per cent with remaining life display. Other data available include outside temperature (min/max memory), time and date. Switching output available, freely programmable. MT 4000 iQ

MT tank sensors ■ Where possible, select a tank sensor that is fitted into the tank from the top – especially if the tank is inside, as lateral drilling and sealing is always risky. All MT tank sensors are suitable for plastic and metal tanks. The tank electrode has stainless steel rods extending into the tank. These can be shortened to the appropriate tank depth, as can the two flexible sensors which can display fill levels up to a depth of over one metre.
