AFL RULES SEPTEMBER

AFL RULES SEPTEMBER THE AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL FINALS ARE ON THIS MONTH IN MELBOURNE. BY JENNY BURNS. Melbourne Cricket Ground. Photo: SDP Media.

FOR MANY MELBURNIANS September means two things— the official end of winter and Australian Rules football finals. For most, both are causes of great celebration! For lovers of ‘Aussie Rules’ it’s the chance to see the best teams in the competition in action. For those not interested in the sport it marks the end of nearly seven months of continual talk about results of matches, injuries and speculation on who is likely to win the holy grail of football—the Australian Football League (AFL) premiership. If your team has had a bad year it’s the end of a very long season! Fortunately this year’s competition has been one of the most even in many years so at different times during the season most supporters have had some hope of team success. 2017 has also seen a minor changing of the guard with last year’s finalists Hawthorn and North Melbourne out of this year’s finals. Teams based outside Melbourne, including the Adelaide Crows, Greater Western Sydney and the Sydney Swans, have continued to perform well while the resurgence of local fan favourites Richmond and Essendon and the 12 WHERE MELBOURNE I SEPTEMBER 2017 I wheretraveler.com

continued good form of Geelong have resulted in some huge crowds attending matches. Attendances of between 65,000 and 80,000 at ‘blockbusters’ at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) have been common. Games at Etihad Stadium, the other venue for Melbourne-based AFL Games, have also been well supported by fans. Both grounds offer guided tours on non-match days, which provide AFL novices together with hardened supporters some fascinating insights. The National Sports Museum, located at the MCG, is another must visit for anyone interested in learning more about AFL. The exhibition, “Australia’s Game”, traces the history of the game and includes a selection of the greatest VFL/AFL Grand Final moments and a wealth of material collected from the greats of this uniquely Australian game. Here you will learn that AFL all began in Melbourne when in 1857 Tom Wills returned to Australia after schooling in England. He was football captain of a rugby school and a brilliant cricketer and initially he advocated the winter game of

football as a way of keeping cricketers fit during the off-season. The code’s first recorded match occurred between Scotch College and Melbourne Grammar School in 1858. In the same year the Melbourne Football Club was formed and the game quickly blossomed. Today the competition features 18 clubs. There are 10 from Victoria—Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Geelong, Hawthorn, North Melbourne, Melbourne, Richmond, St Kilda and Western Bulldogs; two from Western Australia—the West Coast Eagles and Fremantle; two from South Australia—Port Adelaide and Adelaide; two from Sydney—the Sydney Swans and Greater Western Sydney and two from Queensland—the Brisbane Lions and the Gold Coast Suns. Another exhibition on at the Immigration Museum, “Game Changers: Diversity in Football”, shows how cultural and gender diversity are changing the world of football and how the game has changed the lives of indigenous and multicultural players. The exhibition focuses on the stories of two Western Bulldogs players: Lin Jong, the first Australian of East Timorese and Taiwanese descent to play in the AFL and South African-born Jason Johannisen. Personal items from the players’ early years, treasured jumpers and awards are displayed alongside photographs and videos of the changing faces of the AFL. Johannisen was one of the stars who helped the Bulldogs win last year’s premiership (winning the award for the best player on the ground). Bulldog fans are extremely hopeful he will again have the chance to shine on the last Saturday of September—when this year’s Grand Final is being played.

The eight teams who have made it through to the finals will play their first matches from 7 to 10 September. From this time on the atmosphere and crowds will gradually build until grand final day when over 95,000 screaming fans will descend on the MCG. Like the game, Grand Final week has also grown over the years. Whereas once it was just the match on Saturday, these days there is a full week of celebrations. It starts with the Brownlow Medal (awarded to the best and fairest player) on the Monday night and finishes with the two competing teams taking part in a parade on the Friday. The State Government has declared the Friday a public holiday so all can enjoy the parade and associated activities. Grand Final Saturday starts with official breakfasts attended by politicians, sporting heroes and captains of industry. Entertainment on the ground pre-match includes performances by local and international entertainers. The choice and quality of the entertainers is often as hotly debated as the outcome of the match! The roar when the players finally take the field is deafening, as is the noise when the umpire bounces the ball to begin the game. The roar at the end of the game isn’t quite as loud—after all there’s always a loser. The look of joy and relief on the faces of the winning players and their fans is unforgettable. And for those whose team didn’t win the holy grail—well there’s always next year! ■

WHEN AMBER MET ALICE

WHEN AMBER Amber Scott falls down the rabbit hole this month in The Australian Ballet’s production of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland©”. By Jenny Burns

THE AUSTRALIAN BALLET’S Principal Artist,

Amber Scott, has danced all around the world but it’s Melbourne she happily calls home. Listening to her talk of the joys of working and studying around the Arts Centre Melbourne precinct and of experiences such as lunch in one of the city’s laneways and of swimming in Port Phillip Bay, it’s clear this is unlikely to change. “Melbourne is the best place to be,” she explains. “It’s an easy, walkable and friendly city even on rainy days. And there’s so much to do in the city.” The Arts Centre Melbourne remains one of her favourite places. “I fell in love with the Arts Centre Melbourne from a young age and still love seeing the lights of Melbourne sparkle on the Yarra River at night,” Scott says. “The State Theatre is a fantastic place to perform due to its size. Its large depth and width offers great freedom with choreography. Backstage it also has great facilities.” Scott’s love affair with the theatre continues this month as she takes to the stage in The Australian Ballet’s production of Christopher Wheeldon’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland©”. She is one of eight ‘Alice’s’ to perform in the ballet renowned for its choreography, a wildly imaginative set and inventive costumes. The ballet was created by Wheeldon for The Royal Ballet in 2011. He has reimagined the beloved storybook classic using ballet’s traditional structures, interspersed with dramatic twists and comedic turns for a modern edge.

WHEN AMBER MET ALICE

MET ALICE The magical world of Wonderland and its absurd and fantastical inhabitants are brought to life through puppetry, optical illusion, immersive digital projections, countless wigs, masks and intricately detailed and vibrant costumes. Alice’s journey is quite a rollercoaster ride. She shrinks, grows, nearly drowns, is threatened with capital punishment and rescues a baby from the cooking pot. Highlights of the design include an eerily disembodied grinning Cheshire Cat puppet manipulated by six dancers and a sensuous indigo Caterpillar with eight pairs of bejewelled pointe shoe-clad feet. “It is a wonderful role, Alice is a great character,” Scott explains. As a result of the difficult classical choreography, Alice’s interactions with the set and the puppetry and the time on stage (Alice is on stage for the full ballet) it’s also a very demanding role. But demanding roles are nothing new to Scott, who joined The Australian Ballet School aged 11. After graduating as dux, she joined The Australian Ballet in 2001. In 2003 she spent four months on a dancer exchange at the Royal Danish Ballet. Scott was promoted to principal artist with the Australian Ballet in 2011 after performing the Second Movement from

Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s “Concerto”. Other career highlights include working with Wayne McGregor on “Dyad 1929” and “Chroma”, and dancing with Robert Tewsley during the 2008 “Manon” season, Damian Smith in Christopher Wheeldon’s “After the Rain” pas de deux in 2012 and David Hallberg in Alexei Ratmansky’s “Cinderella” in 2013. Her guest appearances have included Odette/Odile in Derek Deane’s “Swan Lake” with the Shanghai Ballet, the National Ballet of China International Gala, Odette/Odile in Russell Kerr’s “Swan Lake” with Royal New Zealand Ballet 2013, Fall for Dance Festival, New York City (Glen Tetley’s “Gemini”) 2011 and The Stuttgart Ballet’s 50th Anniversary Gala (“Molto Vivace” pas de deux). “It’s been wonderful to travel the world performing both with The Australian Ballet and other companies,” she says. But listening to Scott there’s no doubt bringing Alice to life for Melbourne audiences is an equally rewarding experience! “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland©” is on at Arts Centre Melbourne’s State Theatre from 12 to 30 September. DI AND VIV AND ROSE Mandy McElhinney, Nadine Garner and Belinda McClory in “Di and Viv and Rose”.

Nadine Shines

ON STAGE “Di and Viv and Rose” again unites Nadine Garner and the Melbourne Theatre Company, writes Jenny Burns. AS HAS BEEN the case on so many

occasions during Nadine Garner’s celebrated acting career, her latest role with the Melbourne Theatre Company (MTC) came out of the blue. But once she read English playwright Amelia Bullmore’s touching play “Di and Viv and Rose” she was hooked. “I read the play and was immediately drawn to how warm and funny it was,” Garner explained. Described by critics as “incredibly touching and moving” and a “play that makes you want to give it a big hug,” “Di and Viv and Rose” explores female friendship and lifelong alliances. From different classes, from different places, with different experiences and expectations, Di, Viv and Rose would never have crossed paths if they hadn’t shared a

flat many years ago at university. It was the laughs and their troubles that bound them together and sure, as time passes, their bond loosens, stretches and strains, but throughout all the triumphs, disasters and changes, it never breaks. Garner plays Di, an outgoing life-loving gay woman. Joining her are other in demand Australian actresses Belinda McClory who plays Viv, and Mandy McElhinney as Rose. “Di and Viv and Rose” is Garner’s 10th play with the MTC over a 30-year period. “Thirty years ago I did another extraordinary and famous play called “A Day in The Death of Joe Egg” where I played a severely disabled child in a wheel chair,” Garner recalled. “Bizarrely exactly 30 years later it’s another funny English play but I’m playing a high functioning, sporty woman of her time.

16 WHERE MELBOURNE I SEPTEMBER 2017 I wheretraveler.com

“I’ve relished the opportunity to be part of the MTC across three decades and feel honoured to get the chance to hone my craft alongside Australia’s finest practitioners. Every day I feel blessed.” Garner has long been regarded as one of Australia’s top stage performers having worked with numerous companies including the Sydney Theatre Company, IMG Entertainment, Perth Theatre Company, Theatre 20/20 and the State Theatre Company of South Australia. She’s equally Photos: Jeff Busby. well known for her work on television starring in numerous hit series over the years including most recently “The Doctor Blake Mysteries”. Her film credits include “The Wedding Party”, “Razzle Dazzle” and “The Book of Revelations”. Apart from a five-year stint in Sydney and some time in London, most of her working life has been spent in Melbourne. “I love Melbourne as a city to bring children up in because the ocean, the forests and the mountains are so close to the city,” she explained. Her favourite Melbourne experiences include Gertrude Street on an autumnal afternoon, the Collingwood Children’s Farm and The Fairfield Boat House. “Getting out of Melbourne is important too,” Garner added. “I love the Great Ocean Road. My father lives in Port Fairy so escaping down there is also fantastic.” Not surprisingly, given Garner’s long and successful association with Melbourne’s arts and theatrical scene, she has seen a number of changes over the years. “I feel the arts are now really front and centre in Melbourne, almost as important as the AFL (Australian Rules football)!” she exclaimed. “As a city we are urbane, cultured, welltravelled, with a great sense of design and appreciation of fashion and aesthetic values. “From our street art to our cafe society, Melbourne proves to be a city that just keeps improving, deepening and broadening our horizons. I can’t think of a better place to be.” ■ “Di and Viv and Rose” is playing at the Southbank Theatre, the Sumner until 16 September. The Australian Ballet’s ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland©’

The Australian Ballet is performing Christopher Wheeldon’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland©” at Arts Centre Melbourne’s State Theatre from 12 to 30 September. The ballet was created by Wheeldon for The Royal Ballet in 2011 and has since enthralled audiences the world over. Arguably the world’s highest profile contemporary choreographer, Wheeldon reimagines the beloved storybook classic using ballet’s traditional structures, interspersed with dramatic twists and comedic turns for a modern edge. Alice tumbles down the rabbit hole and follows the Knave to try to clear his name. In the end, she rightfully stands up to the Queen of Hearts and takes the fall for stealing the tart. She is an honest girl who believes in the truth. She also discovers love for the first time which makes it both a coming of age story, as well as a whimsical journey of great adventures and discovery. 12–30 September, Arts Centre Melbourne, State Theatre, 100 St Kilda Road, Melbourne. 1300 369 741. australianballet.com.au

Disney’s “Aladdin the Musical”, now playing at Her Majesty’s Theatre, sparkles in every way. There’s the sparkle created by the many sequined and gem encrusted opulent costumes and extravagant sets. Then there are the performances by the cast. Add to these pyrotechnics, very colourful, brilliantly choreographed dance routines and even a flying carpet and you can understand why “Aladdin” is described as one of the most lavish shows ever to tour Australia. The musical is based on the Disney 1992 film of the same name and tells of poverty stricken Aladdin (Ainsley Melham) who meets Princess Jasmine (Hiba Elchikhe) in the marketplace and falls in love. Of course, there are many barriers in the way of their love but with the help of Genie (Michael James Scott) and Aladdin’s friends Babkak (Troy Sussman), Omar (Robert Tripolino) and Kassim (Adam-Jon Fiorentino) true love prevails. ‘THE BOOK OF MORMON’ WOWS AUDIENCES

The award-winning “The Book of Mormon” is playing to packed houses at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre. The politically incorrect, satirical and extremely funny musical tells the story of two newly trained Mormon missionaries who are sent to a Ugandan village to spread their religion’s teachings. Elder Price (Ryan Bondy) is polite, devoted, extremely confident and ambitious. He’s less than happy to be going to Africa and also not too thrilled with his ‘partner’, Elder Cunningham (A.J. Holmes). Cunningham is ‘socially challenged’, clumsy, a compulsive liar and is just looking for a friend. Finding converts among the war-lord controlled, impoverished, disease-ravaged inhabitants of the village to which they are assigned proves more difficult than anticipated. After Elder Price has a crisis of faith it’s up to the hapless Elder Cunningham to save the villagers’ souls. He finds an ally in Nabulungi (Zahra Newman) daughter of the village’s chief Mafala (Bert LaBonte). Excellent performances from all cast members, many funny lines and big musical numbers brilliantly choreographed and performed by an enthusiastic ensemble ensures “The Book of Mormon” lives up to the hype that surrounds it. MELBOURNE THEATRE COMPANY PRODUCTIONS “Di and Viv and Rose”.

The Melbourne Theatre Company is staging several plays during September. On until 16 September is Amelia Bullmore’s witty U.K. comedy “Di and Viv and Rose”. From different classes, from different places, with different experiences and expectations, Di, Viv and Rose would never have crossed paths if they hadn’t shared a flat all those years ago at uni. For a while, the laughs bound them together. But surely time, which delivers triumph, disaster and change so unpredictably,

will slowly draw these three friends apart? The production stars three of Australia’s best known and most loved actresses—Nadine Garner, Mandy McElhinney and Belinda McClory. Opening on 23 September is “Hay Fever”, Noël Coward’s supreme comedy of bad manners. Although Judith, a retired actress, tends towards melodrama in her everyday affairs and her husband, David, a novelist, can be rather reclusive and foul tempered—the Bliss family can be perfectly charming when they want to be. Their grown-up children, Simon and Sorel, are quite capable of civility too—if it suits them. It is just that, on this blighted weekend, each has invited a guest to stay at their country house without telling any of the others. So dashed inconsiderate! And for their poor guests, perfect agony. Stars of the production include Marina Prior, Gareth Davies, Marg Downey and Simon Gleeson. “Di and Viv and Rose” until 16 September, “Hay Fever” from 23 September, Southbank Theatre, The Sumner, 140 Southbank Boulevard, Southbank. 8688 0800. mtc.com.au

Dracula’s ‘Resurrection’ Dracula’s Cabaret Dracula’s new show “Resurrection” plays like a greatest hits on scratched vinyl. It brings together the most requested acts of the past decade, revamped with striking costumes, mesmerising special effects and serrated edge comedy. “Resurrection” blends music production acts, optical illusion, animatronic sculpture and rock-circus, with a song list that moves across the AM dial from Arctic Monkeys to Blondie. Add a dangerously talented cast that look like they’ve been attacked with a bedazzler by a drag queen stylist and you start to get the picture. It’s flashy, kitsch hysteria, with no act too audacious and no heel too high. Tickets include dinner, show, ghost train ride and the new simulated graveyard experience. Melbourne’s History on Show “Melbourne: Foundations of a City” on at Old Treasury Building tells the story of the city’s astonishing growth. Panoramic pictures of the city from the 1840s to 1900 trace the extraordinary emergence of a city that was known by the 1880s as the ‘Queen City of the South’, or, to the great delight of its citizens, as ‘Marvellous Melbourne’. But there was a downside and despite its glittering outward appearances, Melbourne was also a dangerous city. The drains stank, the water was polluted and typhoid fever was rife. Until a deep sewerage system was finally completed in 1898, ‘Marvellous Melbourne’ was also popularly known as ‘Marvellous Smellbourne’. However, as this exhibition shows, despite all that, Melbourne was an amazing city. Ongoing, Sun–Fri 10am–4pm, Old Treasury Building, 20 Spring Street, Melbourne. 9651 2233. otb.org.au

STREET OF STYLE ENJOY COLLINS STREET’S STUNNING ARCHITECTURE, AND FASCINATING HISTORY, AS YOU SNAP UP STYLISH BARGAINS AND TERRIFIC TREATS. COLLINS STREET exudes style and

glamour. It’s a boulevard of chic designer shopping, five-star hotels, exclusive jewellers, grand heritage buildings, churches, theatres and private clubs. It’s Melbourne’s premier commercial streetscape with a number of Australia’s largest corporations calling Collins Street home and it has also been the setting for some of Australia’s best known paintings. While there have been many changes over the years with the construction of a number of modern buildings, its fine nineteenth-century heritage is still strongly evident. Then there are the wonderful plane trees, which line the street looking particularly stunning at night under lights. One of the reasons for Collins Street’s

continual appeal is its ability to change with the times. Since 1837 it has been rebuilt several times. It’s also been extended—the last occurring with the continuation of the street across Spencer Street railway lines and into Docklands. However what hasn’t changed is the street’s appeal as both a business and leisure hub. A Collins Street address is still coveted by major businesses and professionals. The Regent and Athenaeum Theatres continue to attract theatregoers from around the world while worshippers flock to its three historic churches—the Collins Street Baptist Church, St Michael’s Uniting Church and Scots' Church.

This arcade between Collins and Elizabeth Streets has been one of the places to go shopping since it was built back in the 1890s. Nature delights at

Phillip Island ONE OF THE BEST ways to spend an evening is to watch Phillip Island’s amazingly cute little penguins come ashore from a day’s fishing and waddle to their sand dune burrows. Fortunately there are many different ways to see this very appealing natural phenomenon as the Phillip Island Nature Parks offer seven options catering for all budgets and interests. These range from general viewing (that is sitting on stands on the beach watching the penguins leave the water) to exclusive ranger-led tours. Having experienced a number of these tours, one of the newer options—Underground Viewing— has become one of my favourites. Not only does it offer wonderful views of the penguins but it’s also protected from the elements! Built below the newly constructed Penguin Plus viewing stand, this bunker style

By Jenny Burns

building features a 25-metre viewing window which looks out at ground level onto the path many of the penguins take from the water to their burrows. Watching the reaction of the hundreds of penguins taking the path to the window was fascinating. Some ignored it, some came up very close for a look and a couple even bumped into it, ensuring some magical penguin viewing experiences. A ranger explained what we could expect before the arrival of the first penguins and then walked around the group explaining the behaviours we were seeing. Twenty minutes after the arrival of the first penguins we could leave the bunker and head up to the Penguin Plus stands, which meant we could hear the many and varied noises the penguins were making. They are a noisy bunch!

Given numbers on Underground Viewing are limited to 70 it’s a good idea to book early. The same advice applies to all penguin watching options as demand is extremely high. The new viewing area is one of several new initiatives at Phillip Island over the last year or so. Another is the Antarctic Journey, located at the Nobbies. It uses numerous interactive and immersive experiences to explain and explore Antarctica. A joint venture between Phillip Island Nature Parks and WWF-Australia, the exhibition includes numerous hands-on activities and a multimedia experience. Together with some great audio-visual footage of Antarctica, this area also features impressive ‘augmented reality’ technology, which creates the illusion of being able to touch a penguin, stroke a seal and see a killer whale up close. Tickets to the Antarctic Journey can be purchased individually or as part of the four park super pass. The pass also includes entry to the Penguin Parade, the Koala Conservation Centre where you can see koalas close up in their natural habitat and the historic Churchill Island. Phillip Island is around 90 minutes from Melbourne. There are numerous accommodation options on the island while tour bus companies run daily tours. For further information on Phillip Island phone 5951 2800 or visit penguins.org.au

DAYLESFORD EXPLORE

DAYLESFORD’S MAGICAL WATERS ‘TAKING THE WATERS’ has long been a

favourite pastime of visitors to Daylesford and Hepburn Springs. Given the towns and surrounding areas have Australia’s richest concentration of mineral springs it’s easy to see why. However, there’s a lot more to Daylesford and Hepburn Springs than magical waters. Wonderful food, fascinating shops and galleries and interesting attractions are just some of the many delights on offer. Just the same, any visit should include a mineral water experience and there’s no better place than the Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa. The original Edwardian bathhouse in the Mineral Springs Reserve, built approximately 1895, has undergone a $13 million makeover and now boasts more than 30 wet and dry treatment rooms, making it one of the largest spas in the country. It offers such indulgences as a large mineral relaxation pool and private 100% pure mineral water baths, aroma steam treatment room, Vichy rooms, a large relaxation lounge and its very own Hepburn Pavilion Café. There’s also an underground mine tour, a spectacular $150,000 gold pour, the Redcoat soldiers who fire their powerful muskets, and much more. By night, entertainment continues at Sovereign Hill with the multi-million dollar sound-and-light show, “Blood on the Southern Cross”—the legendary story of the 1854 Eureka Rebellion. Convenient on-site accommodation is available at Sovereign Hill Hotel. Louise Saxton, “Blue Wren” 2009, “From the Bower: Patterns of Collecting” exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ballarat.

CULTURALLY INFORMATIVE Founded in 1884, the Art Gallery of Ballarat is the oldest and largest regional gallery in Australia. Home to one of the most comprehensive collections of Australian paintings in the nation, works featured here are just a small selection from a holding that extends from convict artists of Van Diemen’s Land to the present day. General entry is free and special exhibitions are regularly alternated.

EXHIBITIONS AT THE ART GALLERY OF BALLARAT Art Gallery of Ballarat is staging several exhibitions this month. “From the Bower: Patterns of Collecting” features artwork and items from the personal collections of four contemporary Victorian women artists: Loris Button, Deborah Klein, Louise Saxton and Carole Wilson. Their studio collections range from curiosities, natural history specimens, memorabilia, discarded books and china, domestic textiles, carpet and linoleum, and old tools of trade. One theme that overlaps all four artists is travel including postcards, a carved frog from Malaysia, a portable Tibetan shrine, and sugar sachets from Italy. Until 17 September, the gallery is staging a major exhibition of photographs by iconic American photographer David LaChapelle, as part of the Ballarat International Foto Biennale (BIFB). LaChapelle is recognised as one of the most important photographers of our time. His hyperrealistic images are inspired by everything from social issues and political climates, to street culture and art history, to immortality and the metaphysical. The gallery is located at 40 Lydiard Street North, Ballarat and is open daily from 10am to 5pm. RESTAU R ANT OF TH E MONTH

RICKY & PINKY BY PETER M cBREARTY

RENOWNED MELBOURNE CHEF and restaurateur Andrew McConnell is regarded by many in the industry as having been blessed a Midas touch when it comes to envisaging and launching highly anticipated and exceptionally successful dining venues. Located in Fitzroy within the venerable surrounds of The Builders Arms Hotel, rising from the space previously occupied by Moon Under Water and the bistro—came Ricky & Pinky. Cleverly retaining the main structure of a typically historic Fitzroy pub, along with smaller tables around the bar area, where drinks and a bar menu can be enjoyed, Ricky & Pinky also delivers a stylish, architecturally designed open plan interior, featuring Lazy Susans and live seafood tanks. Staff are friendly and more than happy to explain the various dishes, and equally comfortable recommending suggestions from the impressive wine list and the corresponding array of beers and cocktails on offer. Chef Archan Chan’s Hong Kong heritage, along with Andrew McConnell’s own long experience in the region, ensures the authenticity of the Hong Kong style dishes on the menu, and in turn also the popularity of the yum cha, which is available during lunchtime Friday to Sunday. The yum cha menu includes dishes such as crispy-spiced quail, honeycomb tripe with fermented chilli, Peking duck spring rolls, steamed beef bao with chilli sauce, and also pork ribs with black bean and garlic. Vegetarians are well catered for with similarly enticing morsels such as the shiitake and spinach dumplings with spiced vinegar, and a deceptively simple but entirely delicious salad of smashed cucumber and radishes with fragrant chilli oil and marinated black fungus with aged vinegar. Diners are also able to select from a range of rice, noodles and vegetables, including steamed rolled rice noodles with Chinese donut and pork floss, or stir-fried baby pan choy with black bean sauce. However, the yum cha options extend still further with roast meats such as Char Siu pork, a half Chinese roast duck with prune hoi sin sauce, or roast pork belly with crackling. For anyone finding themselves still able to accommodate dessert, steamed custard buns, fried sesame balls, a bowl of fresh lychees, or even oversized XL fortunate cookies provide the perfect finale. The dinner menu at Ricky & Pinky is equally enjoyable, and diners may start with some delicately flavoured Moonlight Flat Oysters with a bonito vinaigrette, or perhaps the shredded cabbage with yuzu kosho mayonnaise and Moreton Bay bugs, before moving on to larger dishes such as the pan fried whole flounder with Gui Lin chilli sauce, pickled ginger and coriander, the Strawberry clams and XO sauce with fried donuts, or the shredded cumin lamb with crispy chilli, cucumber pickle and steamed bao. Desserts include steamed ginger custard with rice flakes, coconut, lychee granita and apple, or the excellent Banana semifreddo with chocolate caramel and crisp batter. For those unable to stay and enjoy the experience of dining at Ricky & Pinky all is not lost, as some of their dishes are available to take away. Les Clefs d’Or members at Dialogue in the Dark.

THE VICTORIAN MEMBERS started off the

month by celebrating the announcement of our latest International Honouree Member, Where Magazine’s own Catherine Stevens. Members arranged a surprise celebration at the Hophaus in Southgate. It was a well-deserved celebration for a very popular member! A taste of the Mornington Peninsula has come to Melbourne city with Green Olive at Red Hill winery opening a store in the Causeway Arcade. Members were invited to sample goods at the store by owners Greg and Sue O’Donoghue. It was a great opportunity to not only taste their fantastic wines but also try their range of body lotions. We recommend

you pop in, if you can’t make it down to the Mornington Peninsula. Our latest member’s meeting was recently hosted by Crown Towers. Afterwards we were invited by the Emerald Group to visit their stores in the Crown complex. We had the opportunity to visit Graff Diamonds, Rolex and LK Boutique. It was a fascinating insight into their luxury brand of products and a great opportunity to meet the managers of each store. Several concierge were seen to be making notes on future purchases. Dialogue in the Dark is a new venture that has opened in the Docklands area of Melbourne. Opened in partnership with Guide Dogs Australia, it gives you the chance to experience a day in Melbourne without the sense of sight. Several of Melbourne’s concierge were invited to walk through and try the experience. Assisted by their guide Francois, the concierge were walked through the experience of riding a Melbourne tram, going to the footy at the MCG and even just crossing Bourke Street. It is a very unique experience and well recommended for all to try.
