A LOVE SONG TO THE LEI
It’s the kaona of a song that make it special. A lei is a metaphor for a child or a loved one. The reference to a fragrant or beautiful colored lei in a song is the Hawaiian way of saying I love you. Kaona can also be used to make a song kolohe. The dancer’s suggestive looks and accentuated hips are sure signs of a kolohe song. Kaona – hidden meaning in Hawaiian poetry. Hawaiian poetry is steeped in metaphor. A song about a fragrant lei is a composer’s way of speaking about a loved one. Kolohe – playfully naughty A song about a rocking chair, such as Noho Paipai, is less about a piece of furniture than it is about what lovers do best.

AT ROYAL HAWAIIAN CENTER THIS YEAR, ROYAL HAWAIIAN CELEBRATES ITS 40TH ANNIVERSARY AS THE GATHERING PLACE OF WAIKĪKĪ.

Each of our quarterly cultural editorials will revisit a decade during The Center’s yesteryear. With this initial editorial, we travel back to our humble beginnings. Previously, there existed a scattering of shops where Royal Hawaiian Center stands today. These shops were razed in 1975 to make way for an expansive open-air mall along the ma kai (towards the sea) side of Kalākaua Avenue, which would forever change the Waikīkī landscape and character.

Our hula shows, seen here on their original Kalākaua Ave. corner stage, are as historic as our hula lessons. First taught by our very own Aunti Maik, we proudly have the longest history of teaching hula in Waikīkī.

AUNTI MAIKI ORIGINAL CULTURAL DIRECTOR
The Center’s cultural program was born from a friendly phone call between cousins, Charmain Richard Lyman and Maiki Aiu Lake. His was a simple request. “Will you come and teach hula?” Her reply was also simple. “Yes.” Maiki held her first hula lesson in the summer of 1981 and the lessons have been continuously running ever since. By the time Aunti (her preferred spelling of the word) Maiki started teaching hula at The Center, she was already a well-established kumu hula (hula master, literally ‘source of hula’). On June 19, 1984, our beloved Aunti passed away.

R | CULTURE Being land rich, a decision by its board of trustees was made to further develop Helumoa. On May 4, 1978, the trustees of the late Princess Bernice Pauahi’s estate broke ground at Helumoa on what was to be known then as Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center (renamed Royal Hawaiian Center, following renovations in the 2000s). Along with other investments, both local and international, Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center would be the trustees’ answer to providing the much needed capital. Construction progressed throughout the following year and was completed towards the end of 1979. The word ‘onipa‘a, meaning long-lasting, was used as an architectural inspiration. Like Kamehameha Schools, Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center was envisioned into perpetuity; its massive and imposing presence a visual metaphor to such a bold claim. The completed footprint extended across three city blocks, with shops located

throughout the three levels of The Center’s three buildings. We celebrated our grand opening in 1980 with then chairman of the board of trustees, Richard Lyman, cutting the red ribbon. Today, there remains but one original tenant, Restaurant Suntory, featured on page 70 in the Savor section of this issue. During its first year, The Center welcomed many new tenants, including The Hat Hut, Island Leather, St. Feliz International, The Cabana at Hilo Hattie’s among many others. From the inception, we always intended to include a cultural program to complement our shopping & dining experiences, a triad that has contributed to our success for the past four decades. They’re passionate about food and equally as passionate about sharing their favorite dining experiences with their legion of Instagram followers. From Bali and Singapore to Osaka and Las Vegas, Maryrose and Reid Hicks and their flavorly fortunate taste buds are always on a culinary adventure, with the most recent one being at Royal Hawaiian Center. “Four years ago, we didn’t even know there was such a ‘scene,’” said Maryrose, referring to the popularity of social media. “It started as a diary to share our travels with family but then we started having followers on our Wanderlustyle blog and Instagram page.” Recently, the self-described “foodies” visited four of our signature restaurants for a world tour of mouthwatering bites as they savored the delectable flavors of Italy, Japan, Thailand and Hawai‘i.

TsuruTonTan Udon Noodle Brasserie
THIS IS BETTER UDON THAN WE’VE HAD IN JAPAN. THE NOODLES ARE SO SILKY. Presented with a bowl of uni crème udon at TsuruTonTan Udon Noodle Brasserie, the travelers loudly slurped the broth while skillfully handling the thick noodles, which are crafted in the restaurant every morning. “This is better udon than we’ve had in Japan,” Maryrose said. “They are so silky and the broth is creamy, and I love the uni.” Yes, there’s a lot to drool over at this aptly-named eatery, whose name translates to the sound of slurping noodles (Tsuru), the sound of kneading and shaping udon (Ton) and the sound of cutting udon (Tan). “Where to next?” Maryrose and Reid cheerfully asked. “We’re ready.”

At Il Lupino Trattoria & Wine Bar, the couple shared a bowl of homemade Fusili al Pesto with arugula before cutting into the grilled herb-and-olive-oil-marinated half rack of lamb. Thumbs-up for both.
Noi T hai Cuisin e
The day’s final stop was at Noi Thai Cuisine, where the aromatic scents of curries and fresh herbs wafted in the air. “This is our first time here,” Maryrose and Reid noted. “But we do love Thai food.” Ordering the Massaman Lamb Curry and the Clay Pot Prawns and Glass Noodles (Koong Ob Woonsen), the Hicks’ adventure had come to an end. “That was worth every calorie,” they said.
Wolfgang’s Steakhouse
Seated at the bar at Wolfgang’s Steakhouse by Wolfgang Zwiener, the Hicks started with a towering seafood platter, followed by the thick Canadian bacon, which Reid devoured in minutes. “That’s crazy good,” he raved. It’s a similar comment he would make once he sliced into the tender USDA Prime Porterhouse steak for two.

TAKE A BREAK WITH CREATIVE COCKTAILS & UNIQUE PUPU SERVED AT OUR SIGNATURE RESTAURANTS In Hawai‘i, pau hana is a time-honored tradition to celebrate the end of a workday. Yet, it’s more than just “happy hour;” it’s unplugging and leaving stress behind. For Royal Hawaiian Center visitors, it marks a post-shopping treat or the beginning of a night out with friends. And while buffalo wings and crunchy onion rings are fine elsewhere, our restaurants offer a more unique, mouthwatering selection with everything from sushi and pizza to udon and lettuce wraps. We know you’ll find something you’ll want to order twice. Cheers!

While specializing in curry as suggested by its name, Curry Café does offer its own iteration of a loco moco, with two sunny-side-up eggs, rice and macaroni salad. And no, the brown gravy doesn’t contain a hint of curry. Even though we wouldn’t mind the experiment.

At Mahaloha Burger, the loco moco is reinvented as a two-napkin, 100-percent, grass-fed Big Island beef burger topped with crispy onions and French mayo, covered in gravy then delicately topped with an egg. It’s messy but worth it. “Everything is done from scratch—from grinding the beef to the homemade sauces,” says owner Jesse Auginaldo. And our tastebuds and grumbling stomachs can clearly tell.

on June 19, 1984, the news was delivered by her daughter, Coline, during our hula rehearsal at Neal Blaisdell Concert Hall for a July 1 performance; a celebration held every four years. There were about 300 of us, and after sharing

the news of her passing, Coline instructed us all to return to our homes. It’s a difficult memory to recall. Without having to express the sentiment in words, we all knew that it was each of our kuleana (responsibility) to ensure her teachings, her knowledge, and her legacy were kept alive. Often times, when I’m at The Center, I reflect

on days gone by and I remember my kumu, a beautiful woman who wanted nothing more than to share aloha and Hawai‘i with the world.

MANUELA FREY, OUR BRAND AMBASSADOR & GUEST EDITOR, TELLS US HER FAVORITE ROYAL THINGS Q: Where’s the one place you have to go when you visit Royal Hawaiian Center? A: First, always is Island Vintage Coffee – I love their poke bowl so much. Then, I go to ABC Store to get souvenirs for my family back home. It’s very different from European shops that it’s just so fun. Q: What is the last thing you bought here? A: It was a treat myself kind of day and I bought myself a new handbag from Valentino. Everyone in there is so sweet. Q: Tell us a cocktail that we just have to try? A: If you haven’t ordered the Mai Thai during sunset while sitting on the patio at Il Lupino, then you haven’t lived. It’s the best way to celebrate another amazing trip to Waikīkī. Q: Where is the best selfie spot in The Center? A: Right in between the palm trees in The Royal Grove next to the stage – it’s even better if a hula performance is happening. I sneak a selfie in every time!

AS WE CELEBRATE OUR 40TH YEAR, WE GO BACK EVEN FARTHER INTO KALAKAUA AVENUE’S HISTORY IN WAIKIKI.

1961. Hawaiiana & souvenir vendors line Kalākaua Avenue
1963. Driving Kalākaua Avenue with Diamond Head in the distance
Kalākaua Avenue has a rich, storied history as the heart of the shopping district in Waikīkī. From one-woman lei stands to ever-evolving market bazaars, here is where we’ve always been able to shop and experience the best and the most unique that the island of O‘ahu has to offer. And as we approach our 40th birthday, we are thrilled to reflect on our land’s and our Center’s history.
