From the President/CEO Welcome to Florida’s Historic Coast, also known as St. Augustine and Ponte Vedra Beach, the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in the United States. Our destination was settled by Spanish explorers in 1565, but it has also been home to many cultures – Native American, Greek, Minorcan, French and British. You’ll find this diversity influences everything from food to architecture, shopping to entertainment and, of course, the many festivals and special events enjoyed year-round by visitors and locals alike. As a vacation destination, Florida’s Historic Coast is capturing attention world-wide with recognition by Conde Nast Traveler, Travel Channel, Travel + Leisure, TripAdvisor, USA Today, just to name a few. While you’re here you’ll find plenty of Old World charm along brick lined streets and Spanish Colonial architecture. But we’re more than our unique history. We’re a foodie paradise with a burgeoning dining scene, which certainly adds to the romance of this magical place. There’s plenty to explore – arts, culture and nature. Music and entertainment, there’s something for every interest and age. As the home of the PGA Tour and the location of THE PLAYERS Championship, we’re a top destination for golf. You’ll find more than a dozen championship golf courses to choose from and have the opportunity to explore the World Golf Hall of Fame.

New & Notable Think this destination is all about history? Think again! There’s so much new to see and do. You’ll find yourself surprised!
New and Notable All Along Florida’s Historic Coast Live music has been a regular part of the nightlife scene on Florida’s Historic Coast for years, but now with the explosion in talent and artistry of performers and songwriters, the St. Augustine Amphitheatre opened the Front Porch concert space to add more performances to the schedule. The new Ponte Vedra Concert Hall has attracted national and international acts including comedians, making for a full year-long entertainment schedule. The Sing Out Loud Festival of Music offers hundreds of free concerts over several weekends in September. Even attractions that present history during the day now open at night for free concerts on weekends.
A Variety of Tastes Along with the destination’s already popular dining scene and its mainstay fresh seafood, entrepreneurs are opening new restaurants with eclectic menus featuring Peruvian, Polish, Greek, rustic Italian, vegan and 6
vegetarian, and creative dishes served up with traditional Florida Southern hospitality. Craft beer and creative cocktails abound. Dog Rose Brewing recently joined the scene along with Ancient City Brewing’s new tap room. Specialized cocktails are served up at new bars such as Odd Birds and Prohibition Kitchen. The St. Augustine Distillery and the Florida Citrus Council collaborated to create the A1A Cocktail Trail where at each stop, the master mixologists at restaurants and bars serve up an all-Florida specialty cocktail using fresh Florida citrus paired with St. Augustine Distillery spirits. Responsible imbibers bring their completed trail passport to the St. Augustine Distillery for A1A Cocktail Trail gear.

is legendary and spas provide a haven for relaxation in a Zen-inspired realm of wellness and serenity. The opening of Sawgrass Village, a modern entertainment, dining and shopping complex, is shaking things up. Yoga with a brew. Fine art and personal shoppers. Cocktails and Seafood Happy Hour. It’s not your typical mall and restaurant row, not even close.
The St. Augustine Alligator Farm and Zoological Park has even more exotic creatures, such as the Lemurs of Madagascar, and newborn babies of the crocodilian species. There’s even a place where children can dig up fossils.
Nature & Adventures
New Cultural Finds
Already a destination with pristine natural areas, new outdoor adventures await. Get out on the water and enjoy dolphin tours and sunset sails with the family-friendly Red Boat Water Tours. Set off on your own to explore the waterways with Kayak St. Augustine or on a Stand Up Paddleboard from Anastasia Watersports. Join Blue Water Adventures to drive your own unique horizontal catamaran. You’ll glide over the shallow water habitats and ecosystems of the beautiful St. Johns River in a custom built airboat at Sea Serpent Tours. Get a bird’s eye view with St. Augustine Parasail or Castaway Canopy, a zipline adventure.
St. Augustine has been hosting First Friday Art Walks for decades. It has become so popular, the event has spread to outlying communities. The Vilano Beach Art Walk Off the Beaten Path takes place on the first Friday of each month along Vilano Road.
Shipwrecks & New Species
The St. Augustine Orchestra has built a distinctly American sound to classical music. Music in the Box at the Limelight Theatre highlights local singers the last Saturday of the month. Poetry, documentaries, foreign films, and annual film festivals take place at the Corazon Cinema & Café.
Anastasia Island is an emerging shopping and dining area with popular attractions and the beautiful Anastasia State Park. The view from the top of the St. Augustine Lighthouse is still stunning, but it’s what’s under water that’s really getting attention. “Shipwrecks, secrets from the sea,” artifacts, and maritime archaeologists. That’s all we can say. You’ll have to see it for yourself.
There’s a lot going on in Lincolnville, a small part of St. Augustine listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A free walking tour and markers tell the story of Lincolnville’s important role in the Civil Rights movement. From 1963 to 1964, the area originated peaceful protests led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Andrew Young.
St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum
Shop ‘Til You Drop St. Augustine Outlets has completed an extensive $7 million interior remodel and added new stores and merchandise. Improvements nclude bright new flooring, inviting soft seating area, Wi-Fi throughout the mall and touch screen directories. Recently new stores opened including H&M, Old Navy, Toys “R” Us, Christopher & Banks and 2Q smoothie & bubble tea. St. Augustine Premium Outlets has also opened new stores. Torrid, which sells trendy plus-size clothing for women, Swarovski , which sells high-quality crystal jewelry and accessories, Book Warehouse, a discount book store for children, crewcuts by J.Crew fashions for children, Janie & Jack children’s clothing, roz & ALI women’s fashions, Zumiez shoes and clothing, LIDS officially licensed sport headwear, and TaylorMade Golf Factory Store, which sells off-season product lines and gear from TaylorMade, Adams Golf and Adidas Golf.
Uptown
Sing Out Loud Festival
The Uptown area is still known for the beautiful Mission Nombre de Dios and the great cross that towers over the Nation’s oldest city. But the once quiet, empty stretch of San Marco Avenue is now lined with eclectic boutiques, a wine bar, and the popular “Uptown Saturday Night” event that brings out shoppers the last Saturday of the month who enjoy live music, libations and the chance to mingle with friends old and new. The always popular Raintree Restaurant has expanded with a romantic brick courtyard adding to the cozy, up-tempo vibe of this newly chic region of the city. FloridasHistoricCoast.com 7
Ponte Vedra Beach The jewel of Florida’s northeast coast has plenty to offer. Five Diamond luxury accommodations, legendary golf, upscale dining, pristine Florida habitat, miles of unobstructed beaches, family style lodging and recreation, performing arts and culture, and relaxing spa experiences.

expanding the size of guestrooms. An all-new Sawgrass Suite was unveiled, featuring both living and dining rooms to comfortably seat eight guests. 6 Best Beaches Ponte Vedra Beach Elegant resorts along with challenging golf courses line the shore of this serene beach. Mickler’s Landing (pronounced mike-lers) is a popular access point for visitors. The beaches at GTM Reserve feature a historical marker, a life-size statue of Ponce de León and a dune overlook platform that includes interpretive panels describing Ponce’s 1513 journey when he sighted land at this very spot. Beauty, history and unspoiled nature combined to put Ponte Vedra Beach on CNN’s list of 22 Can’t Miss U.S. Beaches.

Vilano Beach A popular beach destination since Henry Flagler’s millionaire friends of the late 1800s enjoyed it. Tucked away in this charming little beach town, you’ll find shopping, fun eateries and beach cottages to rent. Anastasia State Park White quartz sand beckons beachgoers at one of Florida’s most popular parks. The northern three miles are for beach walkers only and most signs of civilization are hidden away well beyond the dunes.
St. Augustine Beach Everything is here for the ideal beach vacation—sunny accommodations, tropical seaside restaurants, a beachfront park with an impressive fishing pier, pavilion, splash park and sand volleyball, plus a decidedly laid-back attitude. TravelChannel.com listed St. Augustine Beach #6 in its list of 30 Best Beaches in the World for Families.
Butler Beach Once one of the few designated African-American beaches in Florida, the end of segregation opened it to everyone. Today, the area is a mixture of private homes and condos, but many public-access points make it easily reachable. Showers and restrooms are available.

Luxury never goes out of style on Florida’s Historic Coast
St. Augustine’s history of luxury dates back to Henry Flagler’s Hotel Ponce de León, built in 1888 to accommodate the country’s most elite families. Orbitz Senior Editor selected St. Augustine, with its classic hotels and intimate restaurants in a luxurious romantic setting, among the Top Five Great American Getaways. At intimate B&Bs such as St. Augustine’s Bayfront Marin House, guests watch sunrises and sailboats from well-appointed rooms. Others wake to cathedral bells in the fashionable Casa Monica Resort & Spa overlooking the plaza, which has been splendidly restored by hotelier Richard Kessler. Its artful interiors balance antiques with amenities. At The Collector Luxury Inn & Gardens guests experience the intimacy of a B&B with the privacy of a suite. Sequestered on a landscaped acre, seven restored homes
represent 400 years of history and the city’s only boutique hotel. Most importantly, these properties and others are walking distance to shops, dining and historic sites. Further north in picturesque Ponte Vedra Beach, the premium-service wing of the sprawling Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa raises the bar on luxury. Butlers anticipate every need, from preferential tee times on adjacent TPC Sawgrass to poolside cabana reservations. The spacious accommodations feature designer finishes, stocked refrigerators and wine bars, and fresh flowers. With an onsite spa, signature restaurants and a complimentary shuttle whisking guests to a private beach, Sawgrass promises a superlative vacation. Likewise, the venerable Ponte Vedra Inn & Club is an AAA Five-Diamond rated favorite among discerning travelers, many of whom return yearly to enjoy impeccable service, stellar golf and beautiful oceanfront rooms.
Add three pools, outstanding cuisine and northeast Florida’s largest spa, and you have a recipe for rejuvenation. The resort’s popular sister property, the Lodge and Club at Ponte Vedra, has an adults only lap pool and reciprocal access to the Inn & Club. From Flagler’s time to modern times, luxury stays on Florida’s Historic Coast are not the same old story.

The St. Augustine Amphitheatre, situated in tranquil Anastasia State Park, welcomes top national and international touring acts such as Joe Bonamassa, Justin Moore and Little Big Town. This outdoor concert venue has a
seated capacity of more than 4,000 and has repeatedly been named one of the best in the world by industry expert Pollstar. St. Augustine Amphitheatre’s Front Porch concert space has added even more performances to the schedule. Popular with locals is the “Amp’s” unique Backyard events, which feature up-andcomers and lesser-known bands. These shows are often times free or low cost.
If you’re looking for a more intimate venue highlighting singer-songwriters and the like, head to Ponte Vedra Concert Hall. North of the Nation’s oldest city along scenic A1A, PVCH (as it’s known) previously served as a church and has been perfectly converted for concerts and entertainment. PVCH welcomes award-winning artists spanning every musical genre including 10,000 Maniacs, Don McLean and Robin Trower. It has standing room for 900 and offers familyfriendly events as well as stand-up comedians and performing arts. Florida’s Historic Coast is a haven for musicians. There is no shortage of live music at hundreds of bars, restaurants, and pop up stages. In the summer months, weekly free concerts take place in St. Augustine’s Plaza de la Constitucion and the St. Johns County Ocean Pier Park. The summertime Sing Out Loud Festival offers weekends of free entertainment for residents and visitors alike.

Beach and Family Itineraries Itinerary for Family Fun History & Heritage
Beach Day
Little legs get tired after a day of exploring, so hop on an Old Town Trolley or Ripley’s Sightseeing Train, which will take you to more than 20 stops around St. Augustine. Along with the ease of transportation, each gets you into attractions including the Old Jail and Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum, making it a great value.
Florida’s Historic Coast has more than 42 miles of white, sandy beaches. If you have younger children, visit the splash pad at St. Johns County Pier Park. A local favorite is Anastasia State Park, a 1,600-acre Florida State Park with rich ecosystems and abundant wildlife. Within the park is Anastasia Watersports, which rents kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards. There’s also plenty of shady picnic areas and restrooms.
To experience the history of St. Augustine visit attractions such as the Oldest Wooden School House, which is more than 200 years old. Conquer the castle at the Castillo de San Marcos, the oldest masonry fort in the continental U.S. The fort was built to protect the city by the Spanish. Talk to the re-enactors and see musket drills and cannon fire. Take a break. A popsicle from The Hyppo makes for a sweet treat. Then catch a tour at the nearby Colonial Quarter. Climb the watchtower for a great view of the Castillo and the bay. 22
Have lunch just steps from the beach at Salt Life Food Shack or Sunset Grille, where flip-flops over loafers are the preferred footwear. Make it a daring afternoon at the Alligator Farm and Zoological Park. In addition to hundreds of alligators and crocodiles, there are curious lemurs, colorful birds and the lumbering giant tortoises. Gather the family for dinner at the World Famous Oasis restaurant on A1A where you’ll find a seat next to locals. Try the signature burgers, wraps, sandwiches and an adult treat from the raw bar.
End the day at Fiesta Falls Miniature Golf for a little friendly competition.
Pirates & Privateers The St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum is fun for kids and adults. This hands-on museum transports you back in time to the Golden Age of piracy. See a real treasure chest and fire a cannon. You have plenty of options for lunch including Pizzalley’s, Hot Shot Bakery & Café or the Spanish Bakery. After lunch join a Kids Krew Tour. Specifically designed for families and kids, a professional tour guide will lead you on a 30-minute walking tour through the historic streets of downtown as you master pirate skills like looking through a real spyglass and learning how to use a compass. As the sun sets climb aboard the Black Raven Pirate Ship. A replica of a Spanish Galleon, this 127-passenger ship features pirate shows performed by some of the best professional pirate actors in the State of Florida.
Peacock at the Fountain of Youth
Family Friendly Budget Travel magazine editors selected St. Augustine as one of the top 12 destinations when traveling with toddlers, tweens and teens. And, nearby Ponte Vedra Inn & Club was named by Travel + Leisure magazine as the number one family hotel in America.
Florida’s Family Friendly Coast Attractions keep little hands busy Historic attractions that keep little kids busy with interactive activities include the Pirate and Treasure Museum with its scavenger hunt, cannon firing and immersive, surround-sound pirate ship experience. Or step aboard the Black Raven for a seafaring Pirate adventure. At the Fountain of Youth, taste the water, feed a peacock, and explore a Timucuan Indian village. Feel the heat as the resident blacksmith works his metal at The Colonial Quarter. And explore the world’s oddities at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum.
Teens and Tweens Find Adventure Teens and tweens will enjoy the many water sports on Florida’s Historic Coast. Paddle the waterways in your choice of a kayak or stand-up paddleboard (SUP), or try a surfing lesson. Feed the alligators at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm and Zoological Park and hunt for shark’s teeth at Mickler’s Landing in Ponte Vedra Beach. Climb 219 steps to the top of the St. Augustine Lighthouse. Take the 3D movie experience to the extreme at the World Golf Village IMAX Theater. See the world from behind the bars at the frontier-era Old Jail. After dark, check out St. Augustine’s haunted spots on a ghost tour adventure.
Pirate and Treasure Museum Kayak tour

Togetherness Comes in All Forms Adult members of the family will love getting the family active together with a hike at Anastasia State Park or the GTM Research Reserve where you’ll see plenty of Florida wildlife. Experience the undersea world at Marineland where you can swim with the dolphins and St. Augustine Aquarium’s snorkel adventure. After all that adventure, sit back and enjoy the ride on the St. Augustine Scenic Cruise. Then enjoy a treat on the Whetstone Chocolate Factory Tour.
Dads and Moms Can Enjoy Their Hobbies Dads will want to schedule time on the links at one of the golf courses at World Golf Village, then tour the World Golf Hall of Fame to see surprising artifacts from the Hall’s members and golf’s biggest names. Ladies can shop till they drop at St. Augustine’s two outlet malls or at unique boutiques, vintage stores or antique shops in St. Augustine and Ponte Vedra Beach.
Dining Doesn’t Have to Be Difficult Dining on the Historic Coast is plentiful and varied. There are many casual options for families and restaurants are dedicated to serving up fresh local produce and seafood. The area’s many independent restaurants serve up heritage inspired dishes for adults and kids who want to try something new and plenty of familiar favorites for even the pickiest eaters. FloridasHistoricCoast.com 23
Reel Adventures ADVENTURES AWAIT ANGLERS A famous Florida angler named Ernest Hemingway once wrote: “anyone can be a fisherman in May.” But on Florida’s Historic Coast, every month brings great fishing to be enjoyed by anyone with the desire to dip a line in the water.
Surf Fishing Anglers who want to mix fishing with an inspiring dose of sunrise solitude or evening enchantment can do so anywhere along 42 miles of pristine Atlantic beach on Florida’s Historic Coast. The gentle swish of the surf accompanies fishermen casting beyond the breakers where, depending on the season, whiting, redfish, pompano, bluefish and maybe even a tarpon are searching for food, including the bait on the end of your line!
Pier and Bridge Fishing No boat? No problem. Florida’s Historic Coast has fishing 24
piers located on waterways ranging from secluded creeks to the deep blue sea. Extending 687 feet into the Atlantic, the St. Johns County Ocean Pier is the area’s longest and is ideal for out-of-state fishermen because a Florida fishing license is not required – it’s included for the day with the $3 angler admission. Other popular piers are at Lighthouse Park and Vilano Beach. Get close to the big ones at several bridges such as Matanzas Inlet Bridge and the May Street Bridge.
Go With the Pros Get offshore or on the flats with professional guides like Sea Love Charters, Drum Man Charters, P&A Excursions, and Ripple Effect Ecotours. They know all the hot spots and can get you there and back. Think you’re a pro and you brought your boat to prove it? Check out page 72 for a list of all the ramps where you can launch your Historic Coast fishing adventure.
Pet Friendly
Pet-friendly restaurant
See Spot Run, Play, Dine and Stay Pet owners are feeling the love on Florida’s Historic Coast. From sidewalk water bowls to pet-friendly hotels, the Ancient City’s attitude toward furry friends is as warm as a wagging tail. In St. Augustine you can ride with Rover in a horse and carriage or float with Fido on a scenic boat tour. You might stroll 16th century lanes with your best friend by your side, then lunch at a lively sidewalk café. Here’s a sampling of places on Florida’s Historic Coast that welcome pets.
Salty Dogs Well-behaved, leashed dogs may visit most St. Johns County Beaches, as long as their owners clean up after them. Anastasia State Park allows leashed dogs in the campground, but not on the beach. And the GTM Research Reserve allows leashed dogs on the trails, but not on the beach.
Pets and People at Play Take your dog along and sip the Fountain of Youth’s famed waters, then delve deeper
into history at the Colonial Quarter Museum. Next, visit the Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse for a lesson in 18th century education and a doggie treat. And despite the Castillo’s formidable reputation, the grounds outside the fort are decidedly dog-friendly. After exploring the pedestrian and petfriendly downtown, cool your heels and paws on a Victory III Scenic Cruise along the waterfront. With so much to see, the whole family should hop a Red Train Tour to take it all in.
Stay in Style Let sleeping dogs lie at one of nearly 50 petfriendly accommodations, including upscale hotels, B&Bs and beach resorts. At Beacher’s Lodge Oceanfront Suites, pets receive a dog tag with hotel information to keep their dog safe in case he wanders off, and owners get clean-up bags and a list of pet-friendly attractions.
Plaza de la Constitución
Chow Time Tantalizing aromas emanating from restaurants with outdoor seating will have pets and their humans licking their chops. Savor brats and brew at Meehan’s Irish Pub or elegant cuisine in the Raintree Restaurant courtyard. At Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa in Ponte Vedra Beach, pets are invited to join their families at meal time at the American Gator Club and Cabana Beach Club’s Sea Porch. Where Do I Park? With streets and traffic patterns established in the 1600s, St. Augustine is fascinating for pedestrians, but often frustrating for drivers—especially when looking for a parking space. Much of that frustration can be relieved by heading over to the Historic Downtown Parking Facility, a beautifully designed and thoroughly modern facility featuring 1,200 parking spaces. Open 24 hours per day, the facility charges a fee of $15 per entry. The parking facility is adjacent to the main Visitor Information Center (VIC) and within easy walking distance of most historic sites. Plus, horse-drawn carriages and sightseeing trains and trolleys are readily available here. Self-service, automated parking kiosks provide convenient payment for on-street metered parking and in city parking lots. Metered parking is $2.50 per hour with a three-hour limit on the street and four-hour limit in city lots. Metered parking is also available at the Castillo de San Marcos. The good news is that metered parking is free after 5 p.m. and all day on Sunday. Overnight parking for RVs, tour buses and trailers is available on Riberia Street behind the Parking Facility. Permits are $35 (tax included) per night and are available at the Parking Facility. From March 1 though Labor Day, beachgoers can park on the beach at Vilano Beach or St. Augustine Beach to Matanzas Inlet for $8 per day. At other times of the year, beach parking is free but shifting sand and high tides can make it treacherous. Parking information for St. Augustine is available by calling 904.825.1000.
