Upping the Cool Factor

They don’t call it Hotlanta for nothing! Beating the heat is a must when temperatures soar upwards of 90 degrees.And what better way to do that than with refreshing treats? Whether you fancy ice cream or beverages, there’s no shortage of cold delights in the metro Atlanta area. Here are seven places to get you started.

ICE CREAM AT BUTTER & CREAM

With a location in Decatur and on the BeltLine’s Eastside trail, Butter & Cream (www.butterandcream. com) is the place to go for ice cream on a hot summer day. The ice cream is made in small batches and comes in interesting flavors like Honeycomb Forest and Butterscotch Brownie. Besides ice cream, there are milkshakes and baked treats. For an extra cool treat try a refreshing sorbet, like the Grapefruit Campari and Pineapple Beet (they’re also dairy-free, so great for those with restrictions). These can be used to make slushies.

FROSTED DUCK L’ORANGE AT THE PAINTED DUCK

Besides being a swanky spot to hang out on the Westside— where else can you go duckpin bowling?—The Painted Duck (www.thepaintedduckatl.com) has excellent drinks. The standout is the Frosted Duck L’Orange, a frozen concoction of vodka, orange and coconut milk. It’s a tribute to the Varsity’s famous frozen drink, but with a punch.

TASTING ROOM AT WORLD OF COCA-COLA

Here’s a refreshing treat for the whole family. Head to the World of Coca-Cola (www.worldofcocacola.com), found Downtown, and sip your way around the tasting room. The Freestyle Machines have more than 100 possible different soda combinations. Even cooler than that, though, are the sodas at the geographical stations. There are drink stations featuring sodas from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America. Sip your way around the world without ever getting on a plane.

POP-TAILS AT KING OF POPS BAR

Everyone knows that a rainbow umbrella at an event signals Atlanta’s staple treat: King of Pops (www.kingofpops.com). But did you know that the famous pop company has a bar at Ponce City Market? There you’ll find their pops and cocktails. Level up and combine the two: a pop-tail. The Petal Power, for instance, is made with chamomile gin, elderflower, lemon, prosecco, and garnished with a raspberry rosewater pop. It’s ultra-refreshing and will have you ready to face the summer heat again in no time.

FROZEN MARGARITA AT SUPERICA

What’s a summertime brunch without a frozen margarita? Get your fix at Superica (www. superica.com), with locations in Buckhead and Krog Street Market. Here you can indulge in a delicious brunch with pancakes and huevos rancheros, and then wash them down with a frozen margarita or the frozen slushie of the day. It’s even better when you enjoy it on the patio at the Krog Street Market location.

FROZEN VIETNAMESE IRISH COFFEE AT BON TON

The Midtown Vietnamesemeets-Cajun hotspot, Bon Ton (www.bontonatl.com), offers a welcome respite from Atlanta’s heat. Soak in the ’70s inspired decor while sipping on the frozen Vietnamese Irish coffee. The drink, inspired by the New Orleans classic, is a lethal concoction of Jameson, coffee brandy, condensed milk, chicory coffee, cream and nutmeg. Make sure to get some food in your stomach while indulging, the po’boy or crab cake sandwich ought to do the trick.

SNOBALL AT JUST LOAF’N

Just Loaf ’N (www.justloafnpoboys. com), found at the recently opened Marietta Square Market, features Cajun treats including the cool snoball. A fluffy confection of shaved ice topped with a variety of flavored syrups, snoballs are a delightful way to cool off. They’re also Instagrammable, so make sure you have your phones ready to snap away.
