Bach’s Christmas Oratorio With the ACO
A DAY ON THE GREEN WITH HUMAN NATURE Human Nature make their “a day on the green” debut, performing songs from their whole career, including the group’s original hits through to their hugely popular Motown, Christmas and hit Jukebox albums. Also performing are Kate Ceberano and Bonnie Anderson. 16 December, Rochford Wines, Yarra Valley. adayonthegreen.com.au
Richard Tognetti will direct the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Choir of London alongside evangelist Nicholas Mulroy for two not-to-be-missed Christmas concerts. Bach’s “Christmas Oratorio” is the quintessential Christmas choral extravaganza and sees the composer at his most exuberant and joyful. It tells the story of the birth of Jesus through six cantatas that move from the Nativity, through to the birth, and the arrival and worship of the Three Kings. Evangelist Nicholas Mulroy will perform as narrator throughout the concerts, singing lines from the gospels of St Luke and St Matthew. 3–4 December, Arts Centre Melbourne, St Kilda Road, Melbourne. 1800 444 444. aco.com.au

A DECEMBER TO REMEMBER
Santa’s House in Federation Square.
Giant Christmas bauble in Federation Square.
A December to Remember Melbourne lights up for the festive season. By Jenny Burns. DECEMBER IS ALWAYS an action-packed
and colourful time in Melbourne thanks to our love for Christmas celebrations. But this year the city is more radiant than ever. The City of Melbourne has spent $5.4 million to make this year’s Christmas festivities our most spectacular ever. Add to this the dazzling decorations and plenty of activities offered by our many tourist attractions and shopping centres, and it’s easy to see why it’s a Christmas celebration to remember. Federation Square and the city’s famous laneways are the hubs for many of the City of Melbourne-generated activities. A 16-metre Christmas tree is taking pride of place in Federation Square, together with Santa’s House and a Nativity scene. A giant Christmas bauble is another highlight, while youngsters can have their photo taken with Santa for free. Regular citygoers during December will also see numerous new decorations including Santa’s throne and sleighs throughout the city. Another highlight of this year’s festivities is the new Santa’s Lil Helper app. This app takes visitors on an augmented reality
experience, transforming numerous city sites, including Degraves Street, Howey Place and Federation Square, into enchanted wonderlands. The app also brings to life popular animated characters including Santa and the Nutcracker soldier. Many of our city’s most popular attractions are also getting into the Christmas spirit. The State Library and Federation Square are being transformed into a bright and swirling magical Christmas light show telling the story of the North Pole’s preparations in the lead-up to the big day. There are also Christmas Projections at Docklands. These colourful creations are unlike traditional animations and are creating a new way to experience the area. Together with the new “Christmas experiences” many old favourites have returned this year. They include the Gingerbread Village by EPICURE at the Melbourne Town Hall. EPICURE’s executive Pastry Chef, Deniz Karaca, and his team have spent months bringing the village to life. This year they have crafted a replica of the F1 Grand Prix to add to the village, which comprises 500 kilograms of
8 WHERE MELBOURNE I DECEMBER 2017 I wheretraveler.com
gingerbread, 360 kilograms of royal icing, 150 kilograms of marzipan and around 800 miniature Christmas trees for the festive backdrop. Taking the family to see Myer’s Christmas Windows is another Melbourne favourite—this year is the 62nd year the department store has been creating its animated Christmas theme. While animation is “all the go” this century, a visit to Old Treasury Building shows how Melburnians of yesteryear celebrated Christmas. Its exhibition Photos: Jeff Busby. “Christmas at the Old Treasury” showcases homemade decorations of the 1920s. While there were quite sophisticated Christmas decorations for sale in Melbourne by the 1920s, most locals couldn’t afford them. “Christmas at the Old Treasury” shows the kinds of decorations they made instead. Newspapers of the time printed designs and patterns for cheerful decorations which could be made at home using readily available materials. The Old Treasury Building has used these patterns to recreate a homely Christmas in the caretakers’ basement flat. Old Treasury Building volunteers are making the decorations using 1920s techniques with the theme of crepe paper flowers. Another long-held Melbourne tradition is Vision Australia’s Carols by Candlelight. Indeed, 2017 marks the event’s 80th anniversary. Held on Christmas Eve at the Myer Music Bowl, the event attracts thousands of candle waving participants who gather to hear some of this country’s best-known choirs and solo performers. Once Christmas is over, the thoughts of locals and visitors alike turn to New Year’s Eve and there are plenty of ways to celebrate. The main highlight for thousands of revellers on New Year’s Eve is the fireworks display and again the City of Melbourne promises a show to remember. When the clock strikes midnight, fireworks will be fired from multiple rooftops across Melbourne’s CBD, which can be viewed from anywhere with a view of the city skyline. The fireworks promise to be a fitting end to a month of great cheer. For more information on Melbourne’s Christmas celebrations visit melbourne.vic.gov.au/Christmas

Glenn Lights Up the Gardens Glenn Elston’s enchanting outdoor productions are set to delight Melbourne once again. By Jenny Burns. Glenn Elston.
“The Wind in the Willows”.
THE AUSTRALIAN SHAKESPEARE
Company’s summer outdoor productions have long been a much-loved Melbourne tradition and artistic director Glenn Elston is promising another season to remember. “We are presenting a new production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” with a new exciting cast and some hilarious new takes on the story,” Elston explained. “This will be on during the evening, while during the day the adventures continue for the great characters in “The Wind in the Willows”, who will be returning to the Riverbank and Toad Hall. ““Alice in Wonderland” and all its madcap characters will be on their funny adventures at the magnificent Ripponlea House and Gardens. Indoors at the airconditioned Athenaeum Theatre, there will be a fairyland for “Tinkerbell and the Dream Fairies” to play in and sing for all the little Fairies that want to join them.” The success of the company’s shows is testament to Elston’s foresight and creativity.
He was working as a production manager at the Institute of Contemporary Art Theatre in London when he came up with the idea of presenting family theatre outdoors. “I came back to Melbourne in 1987 to go into partnership at the Athenaeum Theatre, determined to get an adaption of “The Wind in the Willows” on. Luckily the opportunity came along,” he recalled. “On the day that my first outdoor production of “The Wind in the Willows” premiered in The Royal Botanic Garden I said, in all the excitement, we have to do this of a night time with “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. We have to light up the trees and make it magical. “Two summers later we had the production up and running and it was magical. We have continued producing Shakespeare Under The Stars outdoors ever since.” Together with these productions Elston has directed numerous other Shakespeare plays, adapted other classics such as “Lady Chatterley’s Lover” and written and directed seven family productions. His love of outdoor productions, however, shines through. “These productions are a unique opportunity to enjoy fantastic, classic— and mostly comical—stories in a beautiful, natural environment,” he explained. “To be able to enjoy theatre while having a picnic under the stars and not be confined inside a theatre makes for a joyful and relaxed atmosphere that enhances the whole experience. “People are at ease with the combination of art and nature and readily go along on the journey with the characters as they unfold the story.
14 WHERE MELBOURNE I DECEMBER 2017 I wheretraveler.com
“Our family shows are fun, accessible, interactive and exciting adventures that the audience get swept up in and become a part of the action.” When not working on his great productions Elston can often be found walking along one of Melbourne’s beaches at sunset. He’s also a great fan of Melbourne’s laneways for lunch, although his favourite restaurant is in Seddon—Ajitoya Japan’s Kitchen. His favourite shop is Jay Dillon’s Clothing, which has stores on Little Collins Street and Chapel Street, and which he says has the best shirts ever! He cites Melbourne’s historical theatres as must-see attractions for visitors to the city thanks to their rich cultural heritage. “And, of course, the Royal Botanic Gardens is a must-see as it is one of the most beautiful gardens in the world,” he added. During the summer months the gardens also become amongst the world’s most magical thanks to Elston’s wonderful productions!
WHEN AND WHERE “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is on in the Royal Botanic Gardens from 21 December while “The Wind in the Willows” opens on 22 December. “Tinkerbell and the Dream Fairies” is on at the Geelong Botanic Gardens on 29 December and Athenaeum Theatre from 2 January. “Alice in Wonderland” is on at Ripponlea House and Gardens from 9 January. Celebrating Chinese Culture at Sovereign Hill A new exhibition at Sovereign Hill’s Gold Museum features one of the most extensive Chinese artefact collections, and for the first time in over five decades, reawakens Loong, one of Australia’s oldest dragons. “Re-awakening the Dragon” showcases items once used by Ballarat’s Chinese community for social, cultural and religious ceremonies, including the spectacular processional dragon. Another highlight is parts of a processional lion, which, like the dragon, was used by the Chinese community to celebrate Queen Victoria’s 1897 Diamond Jubilee. Both the dragon and lion are the oldest documented examples in Australia, and Ballarat is now only one of four known sites where a Qing Dynasty dragon survives in whole or part. The exhibition also includes costumes and banners used in the celebrations, which included a major procession. Chinese temple artefacts dating back to the 1850–1870s are also on display.

NICA STAGES ‘PLEASE HOLD’
Racing Fun at Docklands
Australia’s next generation of circus talent is on show in the National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) ensemble “Please Hold”. The performance showcases NICA’s final year circus artists all who have high-level circus skills. Performers traverse a maze of ropes, straps and poles testing their stamina and agility to the limit. “Please Hold” examines the social mediums that bind and isolate—from the invasive qualities of social media, to the rigid expectations of social etiquette— looking deeper into how community rules are created and challenged and what happens when we don’t measure up to expectations.

‘The Book of Mormon’ Wows Audiences
The award-winning “The Book of Mormon” is playing to packed houses at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre. The politically incorrect, satirical and extremely funny musical tells the story of two newly-trained Mormon missionaries who are sent to a Ugandan village to spread their religion’s teachings. Elder Price (Ryan Bondy) is polite, devoted, extremely confident and ambitious. He’s less than happy to be going to Africa and also not too thrilled with his ‘partner’, Elder Cunningham (Nyk Bielak). After Elder Price has a crisis of faith it’s up to the hapless Elder Cunningham to save the villagers’ souls. Excellent performances from all cast members, many funny lines and big musical numbers, brilliantly choreographed and performed by an enthusiastic ensemble, ensure “The Book of Mormon” lives up to the hype that surrounds it. Recommended for mature audiences. Ongoing, Princess Theatre, 163 Spring Street, Melbourne. 1300 723 038. bookofmormonmusical.com.au

The Australian Conservatoire of Ballet (ACB) is presenting Tchaikovsky’s popular ballet “Swan Lake” at Arts Centre Melbourne. The production, choreographed by former Australian Ballet Principal Artist Christine Walsh, features 70 ACB dancers together with international guest artists. Tchaikovsky’s hauntingly beautiful full-length score is being played by the 65 musicians of the ACB Orchestra led by the renowned conductor Peter Bandy. The company annually performs full-length classical ballets at Arts Centre Melbourne. It is the only private ballet school in Australia to perform such productions on a yearly basis with its own full-scale orchestra. Established in 1991 by Walsh and Ricardo Ella, ACB has developed an excellent reputation for strong ballet training. ACB graduate students have been, or are currently, employed around the world in international ballet and dance companies. 19–20 December, Arts Centre Melbourne, Hamer Hall, 100 St Kilda Road, Melbourne. 1300 182 183. artscentremelbourne.com.au

MTC PLAYS The Melbourne Theatre Company is staging two plays during December. Playing until 16 December is Florian Zeller’s “The Father”. Directed by Damien Ryan and staring iconic Australian actor John Bell, this MTC and Sydney Theatre Company co-production is a powerful and poignant mystery that transports audiences into the puzzling labyrinth of an old man’s once familiar world. There’s definitely something fishy going on. You can’t fool André, and while he may be 80-yearsold and apt, on occasion, to forget things, they are only ever small things such as where he’s put his watch. It doesn’t explain why people are messing around with things in his flat and why his daughter keeps contradicting herself. And it doesn’t explain why she allows strangers to come in and threaten him. No, something’s going on and he’ll get to the bottom of it.
John Bell stars in “The Father”.
“Vivid White”.
On until 23 December is “Vivid White”, Eddie Perfect’s satirical musical comedy on the Australian property market. Liz and Ben have been mates with Cynthia and Evan for years, and would never let anything get in the way of their friendship. It’s different though when both couples set their sights on buying the same house. Forget friendship, forget respect, forget human decency—this is the Australian property market. And nothing, not even the imminent collapse of civilisation itself, can stop the zombielike single-mindedness of buying the perfect house! Stars of the production include Gillian Cosgriff, Virginia Gay, Brent Hill, Verity Hunt-Ballard, Keegan Joyce, Ben Mingay and Christina O’Neill. “The Father”, until 16 December, Arts Centre Melbourne, Fairfax Studio, 100 St Kilda Road, Melbourne. “Vivid White”, until 23 December, Southbank Theatre, The Sumner, 140 Southbank Boulevard, Southbank. 8688 0800. mtc.com.au

Ballarat’s ‘Romancing the Skull’ Art Gallery of Ballarat’s exhibition “Romancing the Skull” is a celebration of all things related to the skull. It examines its power as a symbol representing death, danger, rebellion, defiance and a ‘devilmay-care’ view of life itself. OLD TREASURY SPOTLIGHTS CONSCRIPTION The Old Treasury Building’s latest exhibition, “A Nation Divided: the Great War and Conscription”, tells the story of Conscription during the First World War. The debate over conscription was amongst the most bitter, divisive and violent ever to consume the nation. From 1916–1917 thousands of impassioned speeches were made, endless newspaper columns were written, and mass meetings and huge rallies were held throughout Australia. Two referendums were held, the first in 1916 then another in 1917. On each occasion a majority of Australians voted ‘No’. In the end Australia was one of few combatant nations to field an army comprised entirely of volunteers. The exhibition includes posters and other materials from the time. ECHUCA MOAMA
PADDLE BACK IN TIME AT
ECHUCA MOAMA
Photo: Tamara Cadd Photography.
The romance of the river is alive and well in Australia’s Paddlesteamer Capital, where the twin towns of Echuca and Moama ooze a rich history. ABANDONED STEAMBOATS AND BARGES, tall red gum wharfs,
small towns that show evidence of once having been much larger, and old station homesteads that face the river are all constant reminders of the days when hundreds of steamers raced along the Murray, opening up large areas in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. For many settlers they were the only source of supply and contact with the outside world. From the earliest days of its history, growth and development of the area has been intimately linked with the Murray River System. The paddlesteamer days of 1865 to 1910 were a prosperous time for Echuca. Echuca’s close proximity to Melbourne and the ambitions of the city’s founder, led to the Port of Echuca becoming the largest inland port in Australia. The riverboat trade was of national importance because it had the effect of opening up inland Australia for 56 WHERE MELBOURNE I DECEMBER 2017 I wheretraveler.com
settlement and thereby increasing the country’s production of wool. When the rail link with Melbourne was established in 1864, Echuca, being the closest point on the Murray to Melbourne, grew rapidly. Paddlesteamers traded along the Murray Darling River System, bringing wool from isolated stations in outback Australia to the railhead at Echuca, for eventual sale and shipping overseas. During the boom period, products worth a quarter of a million pounds were handled annually. For many years Echuca was the main ship building centre for the river transport industry. As the ship building industry grew, so did the demand for red gum as a durable timber for wharf piles, railway sleepers and building materials. The riverboat days were glorious times for Echuca—until a great depression hit in the 1890s. As the railways were extended in New South Wales and road transport improved, the river trade declined and the old wharf, built in 1865, was defunct by the 1920s.
ECHUCA MOAMA
Echuca’s other star attraction is the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre, where you can step back in time to 1860 and relive the authentic steam port, explore the revitalised Wharf and watch the steam driven saw mill in operation. The pedestrian-only Murray Esplanade is lined with historic shops, cafes and hotels with plenty to engage the visitor as they wander this precinct. Echuca Moama is far from living in the past though. Its lively spirit can be experienced in and around the township, where you can find great eateries, friendly pubs, alfresco cafés, chic wine bars and country-style bakeries. There are many specialty shops located in heritage buildings in and around Old Echuca Town. With three great rivers—Murray, Goulburn and Campaspe— converging here, fishing, boating, swimming, camping, biking and bushwalking are naturally big attractions—and we mustn’t forget to mention the opportunity to spend a few nights relaxing on a houseboat and enjoying the sheer bliss of the mighty Murray.

EXPLORE BALLARAT
INDULGE THE SENSES Ballarat’s picturesque Lake Wendouree is famed for its recreation opportunities and a chance to get up close with nature. It’s the former site of the 1956 Summer Olympics. The Lake is just a stone’s throw from the iconic Ballarat Botanical Gardens. Home to the avenue of Prime Minister busts, marble statues, and huge shady trees—it’s one of Australia’s oldest and finest gardens set amongst 40 hectares. For a touch of wellbeing, how about booking in to one of the region’s many luxurious day spas? Or, if it’s food for the soul you are after, you can fulfil every need at gourmet patisseries, charming cellar doors, or award-winning first-class restaurants. CULTURALLY INFORMATIVE Founded in 1884, the Art Gallery of Ballarat is the oldest and largest regional gallery in Australia. Home to one of the most comprehensive collections of Australian paintings in the nation, works featured here are just a small selection from a holding that extends from convict artists of Van Diemen’s Land to the present day. General entry is free and special exhibitions are regularly alternated. EXHIBITIONS AT THE ART GALLERY OF BALLARAT Art Gallery of Ballarat is staging several exhibitions this month. On now is the “Romancing the Skull” exhibition which is a celebration of all things related to the skull. It examines its power as a symbol representing death, danger, rebellion, defiance and a ‘devil-may-care’ view of life itself. More than 20 prints by Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada (1852–1913), long associated with the Day of the Dead, are on show to Australian audiences for the first time. There are also works commissioned specially for the exhibition by Fiona Hall, Reko Rennie and Sally Smart and contemporary Australian artists Sam Jinks, Rona Green and Ben Quilty.

BARS DINING
MELBOURNE’S BRILLIANT BARS By Peter McBrearty IT WOULD BE DIFFICULT to envisage a
better example of the individuality typical of some of Melbourne’s inner suburban venues than Moon Dog Brewery and Bar (17 Duke Street, Abbotsford. 9428 2307), which is located in an otherwise unremarkable side street with all the appearances of a light industrial area, rather than an entertainment precinct. However, the music and murmur of conversation wafting from the interior, and the smell of delicious pizzas emanating from the slightly decrepit caravan parked beside the building, are indications of the attractions awaiting those prepared to seek out this exceedingly quirky bar. This is a bar which is probably best accessed via public transport, Uber or taxi, as the intriguing list of beers on the large blackboard behind the bar seem to increase exponentially in strength, and the variety on offer is likely to tempt anyone given to trying new things rather than restricting themselves to more commercial brews. There is even one particular brew available that turns drinker’s mouths blue—quite a popular side effect apparently. Moon Dog is a relaxed and very casual space, with well-used old couches, tables and chairs scattered about, easy going and well informed staff, and a clientele which isn’t restricted to any particular age or demographic. Drinkers are just as likely to have grey hair as green hair, there is free popcorn, a table tennis table, and all in all, a sense of having found a warm and welcoming oasis in an unlikely location. The only potential downside is that it can prove difficult to stop at just one of those pizzas. The Retreat Hotel (280 Sydney Road, Brunswick. 9380 4090) features just about all the ingredients required for the perfect inner-city pub, heritage (established in 1842), live music (free), a beer garden for the warmer months, decent pub food (and dishes such lentil shepherd’s pie and a black bean, mushroom
Left and above: Moon Dog Brewery and Bar.
and brown rice burger mean vegetarians will also feel right at home), and of course the most vital ingredient of all— an abundance of character! One venue which has (despite exponentially rising land prices and the area’s ongoing gentrification) managed to retain 110 per cent of its true Fitzroy character, is The Napier (210 Napier Street, Fitzroy. 9419 4240), where local brews, a pool, a courtyard, fireplaces and a legendary towering, cholesterol laden construct known as a Bogan Burger (delicious but definitely not for the faint hearted) combine with the requisite intangible inner Melbourne ambience to draw in cheerful crowds of appreciative regulars. The Standard Hotel (293 Fitzroy Street, Fitzroy. 9419 4793) manages to perfectly live up to its own mantra “Hard to find, easy to love”, in that it lies nestled in a slightly confusing maze of one way streets, but rewards the intrepid explorer capable of finding it with a warm interior (the venue dates back to 1865), a renowned beer garden, large dining area, live music and, of course, lashings of genuine, inner-city Melbourne character. wheretraveler.com I DECEMBER 2017 I MELBOURNE WHERE 61

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH
SHUKAH
BY PETER M cBREARTY
MANY VISITORS TO MELBOURNE will find themselves exploring the boutique stores and cafés of Chapel Street, something of a mecca for the fashion conscious and those in search of a little retail therapy in conjunction with a well-poured latte. However, for those willing to continue a little further down toward the Southern end of Chapel Street, a mecca of an entirely different sort awaits—one focused more on a range of interesting dining venues and eclectic bars. Nestled in amongst this distinctly Melburnian array of restaurants and bars is Shukah, the latest addition to chef Garen Maskal’s family of restaurants, and joining his popular modern Armenian inner-city eatery Sezar and original Hispanic diner Black Toro. Shukah encourages the sharing of both food and conversation in equal parts. The ideal place to start at Shukah could be with a chilled Yan Yan Armenian Lager, paired with the smoky house-made hommus with brown butter and flatbread. The version of this Middle Eastern favourite produced at Shukah is sufficiently moreish to ensure many may seriously contemplate ordering more before they continue to explore the menu. The mezze of four vegetable dishes consists of four bowls of frequently varying vegetable dishes, served with delicious flatbread, continuing the sharing, grazing style of dining encouraged at Shukah. Kingfish sashimi with avocado, cucumber and black lime is delicately flavoured, while the charred octopus and kipfler potato with pistachio and olive salsa and labne is equally delicious, as are the toasted Manti (dumplings) with lamb, garlic yoghurt and sumac. Tempura oysters arrive with preserved lemon and chilli, while grilled haloumi is accompanied with barbecue zucchini, hazelnut, raisin and lemon, and succulent harissa braised beef kebabs with smoked garlic and pickled peppers are also exceptionally hard to resist. Barbecue lamb belly with smashed cucumber, sesame and yoghurt provides another meat fix, while the appeal of the falafel kebabs with pickled eggplant and tahini will not be limited only to vegetarians. For anyone wise enough to avoid the understandable temptation to overindulge on the smaller dishes at Shukah, the wild green and feta borek with fennel and spiced onion jam may be the next step on their culinary adventure, or perhaps the barbecue short rib with roasted sweet corn and faro, the succulent meat falling away from the bone. Roasted barramundi is served with a pea and broad bean tabouleh and mango amba (pickled condiment), barbecued baby chicken with sumac pickled onions, green harissa and yoghurt is further proof of the inherent value of the large charcoal grill Shukah inherited from the previous proprietor. Lovers of perfectly cooked meat will find it difficult to choose between the Wagyu striploin with tomatoes, red pepper and bone marrow salsa, the crispy pork hock with walnuts, dates and apple salsa verde, and the substantial braised lamb shoulder with pomegranate and chick peas. If the decision making proves difficult, Shukah makes it easy with their “Let us feed you” banquet at $58 per person, with the option of matched wines at only another $39 per person. A “Happy Lunch” tasting menu is also available Friday to Sunday at $35 per person, and could be the perfect way to commence an exploratory stroll along Chapel Street. Shukah is a relaxed, enjoyable and very welcome addition to the burgeoning dining scene along the lower end of Chapel Street, and increasing awareness of its appeal means reservations are advisable. n

Free Tram Zone The Free Tram Zone in Melbourne’s CBD includes the area of the Queen Victoria Market, Victoria Harbour in Docklands, Spring Street, Flinders Street Station and Federation Square. Travel on trams within this zone is free, and you won’t need a myki, however, if your journey starts or finishes outside the boundaries of the Free Tram Zone, you must touch on your myki at the reader in the normal way to make sure you have a valid ticket. TAXIS Taxis can be hired off the street, at designated taxi ranks or by phone booking. There are taxi ranks all over the Melbourne CBD, including four safe city taxi ranks which have been established to give patrons and taxi drivers access to safe transport and fares late at night. On weekends after 11pm, each safe city taxi rank is staffed by a security officer in a distinct uniform. 13CABS ...........................................13 22 27 Silver Top Taxis ...............................13 10 08

LES CLEFS D’OR
LES CLEFS D’OR By Nik Adams
Victorian Les Clefs d’Or in Echuca Moama.
OUR MONTH BEGAN with a tour of the
Victorian countryside with AAT Kings. We headed to the Echuca Moama area, where our day started with a traditional morning treat at the famous Heathcote bakery. After that we headed on to the township of Echuca. Visiting the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre, we learnt about the steamboats on the Murray River and their importance in Melbourne’s history. We were also given the chance to ride on a stagecoach around the centre. Next, we had a very relaxing lunch on the steamboat PS Emmylou and enjoyed the peace and serenity of cruising the Murray River. The day ended enjoying a wine tasting at Morrisons Winery.
STATE DIRECTOR FOR VICTORIA
n Melbourne’s concierge were also invited to visit the Emporium Shopping Centre by its Guest Experience Manager, Noah Roh. With it being Spring Racing season, “the races” were the theme for the tour, and we visited relevant stores such as men’s suit stores, ladies designer stores and hair salons among others. We finished off with dinner, treating ourselves to lobster at Gyoza Gyoza. We highly recommend visiting Emporium for all your fashion needs.
LES CLEFS D’OR INTERNATIONAL Past President: COLIN TOOMEY, The Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney General Secretary: JAMES RIDENOUR, InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto
AUSTRALIAN EXECUTIVE President: PETER MCBREARTY, The Langham, Melbourne Secretary: DAVID LUFF, Crown Towers Perth Treasurer: BEN DAVIES, The Langham, Melbourne
VICTORIAN MEMBERS State Director: NIK ADAMS, Stamford Plaza Melbourne
n Yarra Ranges Tourism invited the concierge to visit and experience the Yarra Valley region. Starting off the day visiting Coombe Estate—the home of Dame Nellie Melba— we then moved on to Napoleone Brewery to sample some cider. We followed this with lunch at Oakridge Wines, dessert at Levantine Hill Estate, a trip to Healesville Sanctuary, wine sampling at TarraWarra Estate, and finished with gin tasting at Four Pillars Distillery. It was a great day exploring Melbourne’s wine region!
