Those looking for relief from the summer temps in the Valley of the Sun should head to Sedona. Just a short road trip away—approximately two hours from Phoenix—you can spend the day exploring the famous red rocks and soaking up some relief from the heat at this northern destination.

Cool off in the waters of Oak Creek at Slide Rock State Park, where a popular summer activity includes slipping and sliding down the natural waterslides created by the flow of water over the red sandstone. While it’s easy to marvel at the red rock formations from afar, it’s just as easy to grab a pair of sneakers and some water and head up one of the more than 300 miles of trails in the area. There are marked trails everywhere; maps can be found online at www.visitsedona.com or in town at one of the many shops.

On the outskirts of town are several local wineries that you can tour on your own. Or, head into town and book an excursion with a tour company.
