My Fair Lady
The much loved musical “My Fair Lady”, directed by stage and screen legend Julie Andrews, opens in Brisbane this month. The Cinderella story about the cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle and the appealingly arrogant phoneticist, Henry Higgins, is an endearing tale that charms audiences with its warmth and vivid characters. Headlining the company is acclaimed theatre, film, and television actor Charles Edwards (“Downton Abbey”), as Henry Higgins and the young Australian star, Anna O’Byrne, as Eliza Doolittle. Joining them is an outstanding cast. Reg Livermore will play the role of Alfred P. Doolittle. Robyn Nevin will play Mrs. Higgins and Mark Vincent will play Freddy. The role of Colonel Pickering will be played by Tony Llewellyn-Jones and Deidre Rubenstein will play Mrs. Pearce. From 14 March, Lyric Theatre, QPAC, cnr Grey and Melbourne Streets, South Bank. 136 246. qpac.com.au

The show features an all-Australian cast and includes every song from Green Day‘s album “American Idiot”, as well as several songs from their follow-up release, “21st Century Breakdown”. This thrilling new musical has had Green Day fans in rapture and introduced a generation of theatregoers to their powerful and moving musical style.

Constellations Imagine that we all live in a world that is part of a multiverse in which, at any given moment, several different outcomes can exist simultaneously. “Constellations” ingeniously puts this theory on stage. Lovers often say fate brought them together, and fate doesn’t get much credit after that. But in “Constellations”, by young British playwright Nick Payne, every moment Roland and Marianne share is at the mercy of the infinite and unknowable universe. “Constellations” has played to packed houses and rave reviews in New York and London. Queensland Theatre invigorates this international hit with an imaginative new production with Queensland-born and National Artistic Team member, Lucas Stibbard as Roland, and well-known Australian television star, Jessica Tovey as Marianne. 9 March–9 April, Bille Brown Studio, 78 Montague Road, South Brisbane. 3010 7600. queenslandtheatre.com.au
Every Brilliant Thing You’re seven years old. Mum’s in hospital. Dad says she’s ‘done something stupid’. She finds it hard to be happy. You make a list of everything that’s brilliant about the world. Everything worth living for. “Every Brilliant Thing” is a play based on true and untrue stories about depression and the lengths we go to for those we love. British actor James Rowland takes on the role that earned a string of awards and nominations including New York’s Drama Desk Award. This fabulous, intimate and poignant show is an unforgettable experience for adults and teenagers alike. 8–11 March, Cremorne Theatre, QPAC, cnr Grey and Melbourne Streets, South Bank. 136 246. qpac.com.au
SINGLE ASIAN FEMALE An incisive new comedy skewering race and gender in contemporary Australia from Brisbane-based award-winning writer Michelle Law. Step into the after-hours of a suburban Chinese restaurant and meet a family of whip smart women who are definitely talking about you in their native tongue. Set on the Sunshine Coast this hilarious play answers what it means to be an Asian woman living in Australia. Making Modernism “O’Keeffe, Preston, Cossington Smith: Making Modernism” showcases the iconic art of Georgia O’Keeffe, one of the most significant American painters of the twentieth century, alongside modernist masterpieces by the celebrated and pioneering Australian artists, Margaret Preston and Grace Cossington Smith. Born in the late nineteenth century, the three painters came of age during the 1910s and ‘20s, decades of great social and cultural transition. While they were not connected by personal familiarity or direct correspondence, they were kindred spirits, rejecting the artistic conventions of the past and forging new ways of picturing the changing world. United by their love of nature, O’Keeffe, Preston and Cossington Smith developed subjects from their immediate surroundings into distinct interpretations of place. HOURS IN FORGET EVERYTHING YOU
thought you knew about dull old Brisbane because it doesn’t exist anymore. Yes, Brisbane is still a friendly place with a warm, subtropical climate and plenty of venues that take full advantage of that, but the city is all grown up now with some pretty bright and shiny things to experience. Here’s what you could do with 48 hours to spare.
Arrival 3PM: You’ve arrived, and you are ready to dump those bags and run out to have some fun. Explore the city and discover the shopping mecca of James Street. Whether your weekend itch will be scratched by beautiful homewares, designer fashion, Scrumptious Reads or the latest movie, James Street will have the answer. Finish your afternoon with a relaxing session at the Thai Foot Spa. EVENING: Take a short stroll up Ann Street for dinner and find The Apo located in a heritage-listed pharmaceutical dispensary that dates from 1862. There’s a restaurant downstairs and a sneaky bar upstairs just perfect for that pre-dinner drink. The Apo sits on the corner of Bakery Lane, a cute little enclave where you’ll find quirky 12 WHERE BRISBANE I MARCH 2017 I wheretraveler.com
menswear, instant garden delight, and heart-shaped brownies that you’ll wonder how you ever lived without. UP LATE: Still ready to roll after dinner? Head back towards James Street but stop at Eleven Rooftop Bar on the way. This sophisticated bar on the eleventh floor of 757 Ann Street offers sweeping views of the Valley’s nightlife.
Saturday MORNING: Bless yourself with breakfast at Reverends Coffee in Brunswick Street where the coffee is smooth and velvety and the breakfast filling. Tea is also treated with reverence here, and you’ll find a fine selection served with a different touch. Fortitude Valley has a long Brisbane history from the earliest days of settlement around 1850, through its role as the premier shopping district, to its notorious part in Brisbane’s gangland past. Take yourself on a Brisbane City Council Heritage trail of the area or book a Brisbane Greeter tour for a local’s perspective. MIDDAY: After walking through the streets, you’ll want to relax for a while over lunch, and River Quay at South Bank offers the perfect place. Relax on River Quay Green on the Brisbane River’s banks or dine at the restaurant strip which lines the boardwalk.

serves premium steak with coleslaw, tomato, an Idaho potato and a bread roll. In the 1970s this would have cost you just $1.50, but don’t expect those prices now!
AFTERNOON: Experience some afternoon delight by exploring the latest exhibitions at GOMA, the Queensland Art Gallery and Queensland Museum. There’s something for everyone here including a large range of activities designed to engage and entertain children.
Sunday
EVENING: Eat Street Markets will both feed and entertain you for the evening. Located on a disused container wharf at Hamilton, the market has everything your foodie heart could desire from Mexican, Turkish and Thai to freshly cooked calamari, tender dumplings and gourmet burgers. Sweet treats range from chocolate fondue and French crepes to cronuts and Greek honey puffs. UP LATE: For a slice of night action and a serious selection of rum, try the Breakfast Creek Hotel’s Substation no. 41. Here you’ll find over 400 rum varieties including some very top shelf items. A Brisbane icon, the Breakfast Creek Hotel was built in 1889 and is also famous for its Spanish Garden Steakhouse which still
MORNING: Start your day with a French-inspired breakfast of chicken waffles with whipped smoked butter or coconut porridge topped with toasted hazelnuts at The Long Road located at the New Farm end of Brunswick Street. Work off breakfast and get your body moving with a walk along the Brisbane River Walk starting from Riverview Court at New Farm. You can follow the walk all the way into town down to Eagle Street Pier where you’ll have worked up enough of an appetite to be looking for lunch. MIDDAY: Eagle Street Pier offers a wide selection of food choices, from burgers and sushi to seafood and top end steaks. Check out ARIA Restaurant, Cha Cha Char, Saké, Pony and George’s Paragon Seafood. AFTERNOON: Time to pack up and head off home. You’ve done Brisbane proud with your spirit of adventure and have plenty of memories, plus a few extra kilos, to take home. wheretraveler.com I MARCH 2017 I BRISBANE WHERE 13

By Tiana Templeman IT IS EARLY evening at South Bank and things are hotting up. The sound of people having fun mingles with soft jazz from a nearby restaurant and the heady scent of frangipani fills the air. Elegant fashionistas share the streets with tourists wearing t-shirts and there is no cut-off age limit for enjoying a night out. The latter is a big hit with kids of all ages. Across the road at South Bank Parklands you can take to the sky on The Wheel of Brisbane, a giant observation wheel which takes you high above the city. If you would prefer to take to the water, River City Cruises offer a range of relaxing tours which include a hop-off option so you can explore further afield. Another popular attraction with a maritime theme can be found at the southern end of the Parklands. The Queensland Maritime Museum houses historical maritime artefacts, photographs and paintings in its collection, alongside

numerous vessels which you can explore, such as the World War II frigate HMAS Diamantina and the powerful steam tug Forceful. It is a hands-on museum run by passionate volunteers, many of whom are retired ship masters, marine engineers and ex-naval personnel. SHOPPING SECRETS South Bank is home to a number of eclectic creative markets. If you have an appetite for the unusual and like to browse, visit the Collective Markets, which take place on Fridays at the Stanley Street Plaza from 5pm to 9pm, Saturdays from 10am to 9pm and Sundays from 9am to 4pm. Here you can pick up handmade fashion, vintage collectibles, jewellery, homewares and furniture at affordable prices. Little Stanley Street plays host to the Young Designers Market on the first Sunday of every month from 10am to 4pm. Everything at this market is handmade by the stall holders. For many of these creative entrepreneurs, showing at the market is the first step towards the commercialisation of their designs so you will also be helping a talented up-and-comer get a head start in the industry. Chatting to the creators is one of the pleasures of shopping at this colourful market.
WHERE TO EAT South Bank has a dazzling selection of restaurants and cafés, many of which capitalise on Queensland’s love of outdoor dining. South Bank Surf Club overlooks the famous swimming lagoon and gives an inner-city twist to the traditional Aussie surf club. It is a great spot for a drink and a bite to eat on a sunny afternoon. Alongside the river there is River Quay, a collection of sleek dining options ranging from champagne breakfasts at River Quay Fish to rustic Italian share plates at Popolo and the steakhouse sophistication of Stokehouse Q. Fresh seafood, home-style favourites and an Indonesian influence can be found at The Jetty, while Francophiles will appreciate Aquitaine Brasserie, a charming alfresco diner offering a delicious taste of France with classic dishes such as Marseille bouillabaisse. Nearby Grey Street offers an equally impressive choice of dining options. The vibe here tends to be more lively, especially at Ole, a Spanish restaurant with a dedicated sangria bar. Share plates are a feature here making this a great spot to visit with colleagues or friends. Try The Spaghetti House Trattoria if you’re in the mood for traditional Italian
favourites served in a stylish but homely space. Ahmet’s is the place to go for Turkish cuisine while Torba Restaurant & Lounge offers a contemporary take on Russia’s exotic opulence with velvet drapes, glittering chandeliers and a sultry purple colour scheme. Try a selection of European wines and a variety of Russian vodkas and vodka-based cocktails, such as Kalinka and Balalaika. If you are planning a trip to South Bank, you had better bring your appetite.

Brisbane Lookout sunset views, Mt Coot-tha.
MARVELLOUS MT COOT-THA
By Kerry Heaney
AT 287 METRES above sea level,
Mt Coot-tha might be little more than a large hill, but it’s the best place to see Brisbane, from the suburbs to the ocean. Reach Mt Coot-tha Lookout by driving from the inner city on Milton Road and the winding Sir Samuel Griffith Drive. From the viewing platform, you’ll see why people have been heading up the mountain to enjoy the panorama both day and night for more than 180 years. At the lookout, take in the view with a coffee or snack from Kuta Café or indulge with fine dining at the Summit Restaurant.
The Summit Restaurant building was redeveloped in the 1980s incorporating the second Federation-style kiosk built in 1918. Today, the Summit Restaurant is an award-winning venue with a menu that focuses on quality Queensland produce, and stunning vistas. Mt Coot-tha has many different picnic spots located along the road, but J.C. Slaughter Falls at the base of the mountain is one of the most popular. Along with plenty of barbecues and picnic tables, it has a burbling creek meandering through the middle. Mined for gold between 1890 and 1950, during the war years Mt Coot-tha was a
military base and explosives depot. You’ll find reminders of this history on the walking trails that criss-cross the slopes. The western side is popular with mountain bike riders while those walking tracks are a training ground for adventurers. At the base of the mountain is the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, 52 hectares of landscaped subtropical greenery, open every day from 8am to 5pm. Entry is free and there are also free guided walks Monday through Saturday at 11am and 1pm which leave from the Information Desk. A good place to relax with refreshments is the Botanical Café. Open daily from 9am to 4pm on weekdays and 8am to 5pm on weekends, it’s located near an entrance to the gardens and has a covered deck overlooking a picturesque lake. As you stroll along the winding garden paths, you’ll discover a Japanese Garden, Bonsai House, Fern House, areas of exotic rainforest, a lagoon and bamboo grove and dedicated activities for children. The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium was named after the Governor of the New South Wales colony who arrived in 1821 and charted an unknown southern sky. The centre’s optical star projector creates a replica night sky, and regular shows are a feature. Mt Coot-tha is a 20-minute drive by car from Brisbane’s CBD and can also be accessed by bus.

26 WHERE BRISBANE I MARCH 2017 I wheretraveler.com
BRISBANE’S EAGLE STREET is a culinary
hot spot with its unrivalled view of the Story Bridge and Brisbane River and a selection of dining options to match. This wide stretch of water backing on to the tall cliffs of Kangaroo Point is glorious by day, but by night the whole area twinkles with lights dominated by the colourfully lit Story Bridge which changes its hue to suit the occasion. Looking for a quick coffee or just a light meal? There’s plenty of choice in Eagle Street Pier at 45 Eagle Street. Discover simple, honest food at casual eatery Jude Kitchen & Bar, fast and healthy flamegrilled burgers from Grill’d or soft and hard tacos, burritos and nachos at Mexican taqueria Guzman Y Gomez. For a post-work drink with friends or a night out on the town, try the stylish yet intimate cocktail bar Mr & Mrs G Riverbar. Named after its owners, veteran restaurateurs Andy and Marcia Georges, it is right on the river bank and adjacent to the couple’s much loved Il Centro Restaurant, home of the legendary Sand Crab lasagne. Spreading the fun of Bavarian bier and culture around the globe, the Bavarian Bier Café’s wide balcony on the second level of Eagle Street Pier is a great spot

for business lunches, after work drinks or a relaxing dinner. There’s an impressive range of imported beers at the Bavarian Bier Café, which also offers a good selection of schnapps and wine. They are famous for their schnitzel but also have lighter options. Pony has an uncomplicated approach to modern Australian food with a flavour-driven menu and an array of shared plates and wood-fired dishes. Saké Restaurant & Bar serves up contemporary Japanese cuisine with a distinct local flavour and has an exclusive range of premium sakés imported directly from Japan. Try the Otsumami menu, which features small bites that
are perfectly matched with delicious saké and shochu cocktails. A little further down the river at 71 Eagle Street, Riparian Plaza’s open promenade and plaza area features some of Brisbane City’s most popular waterside dining experiences, including Kingsleys Steak and Crabhouse, Riverbar & Kitchen and modern Asian delicacies at Madame Wu. The Riverside Quarter at 123 Eagle Street is home to Jellyfish, Friday’s, Baba Ganouj, Pig ’N’ Whistle, Groove Train, Blackbird Bar & Grill and Navala Churrascaria. Friday’s on Eagle Street facing the river, boasts a large outdoor river front
terrace fronting a huge island bar and is a popular spot late in the evening until the early morning. The Waterline Restaurant has an extensive wine list and offers modern Australian cuisine. The Terrace Grill is open for lunch and dinner, with plump juicy char grilled steaks, seafood and innovative modern Australian cuisine. Closer to the Story Bridge, Customs House, with its grand colonnades, portico, and copper-sheathed dome, is a fine example of Victorian Free Classical style architecture. It is open for both lunch and dinner, with Customs House Restaurant’s expansive river views. They are especially appropriate for a leisurely Sunday breakfast available on the riverside terrace from 9am. Further afield in Toowong, the Regatta Hotel is known as the Grand Lady of the Brisbane River. Established in 1874, it has survived fire and flood and now boasts the Boatshed Restaurant, the Street Café, the Main Bar and the Courtyard. Executive chef Daniel Fleming has designed menus, which provide an innovative, broad range of dishes using fresh, seasonal produce. The choices are many but the river links them all, its banks winding through the city creating vistas to delight diners both night and day.
PONY Standing proud on the lively riverfront, Pony Dining offers modern Australian cuisine with premier waterfront dining, leading event solutions, an iconic bar and a spacious terrace, boasting unrivalled views of the Story Bridge. A lasting impression starts with the fragrance of wood smoke and spirited chefs around a custom made Argentinean wood-fire grill serving an honest, uncomplicated and flavour driven menu. The seafood and meat are sourced from reputable suppliers within Australia. The quality cuts of meat are prepared over the wood-fired grill. Pony Dining offers seafood and pasta dishes that are thoughtfully created with seasonality in mind. The menu also features dishes designed for sharing as well as innovative vegetarian options. LES CLEFS D’OR BRISBANE
LES CLEFS D’OR World Science Festival, Street Science. Photo: Queensland Museum.
By Jaime Lachs CHIEF CONCIERGE, RYDGES SOUTH BANK AS THE EAST COAST of Australia
continues to swelter under an energy sapping heat wave, and the South East Queensland beaches welcome the hundreds of people attempting to escape the sun, there are still many activities on land that will take you out of the scorching heat. ■ The eighth annual Brisbane Comedy Festival runs until 28 March, it will be held in two unique venues. The historic Brisbane Powerhouse and Brisbane City Hall. The festival has many of Australia’s top comedians performing but it is probably recommended for adults.
March welcomes the start of two of Australia’s biggest sporting competitions and showcases two of Queensland’s greatest sporting teams. The Suncorp Super Netball series, which features the defending champions the Queensland Firebirds and in the Rugby League known locally as NRL, the Brisbane Broncos attempt to prove that once again they are a finals league team. ■
For those not interested in sport and prefer a less strenuous activity, the second annual World Science Festival is on from 22 to 26 March at the ■
Queensland Museum and surrounds. This festival originated in New York in 2008, and for the first time ventured outside the United States in 2016 to be hosted in another world city, this time in the southern hemisphere—Brisbane city.
These concierge should be one of your first options for general hotel assistance. Enjoy your time in Queensland.
■ Another great exhibition to see in Brisbane is at the State Library of Queensland at South Bank. Between 2014 to 2018, Queensland is commemorating 100 years since many of its residents participated in World War 1. Over 57,000 service men and women from Queensland volunteered for action during World War 1. The State Library of Queensland’s John Oxley Library houses significant collections relating to the experience of Queenslanders during World War 1. This exhibition is great as it shows an important part of Australia’s history and the nation’s important contribution to world affairs.
