boardsbootsbindings Welcome to the 2009 SnoWboarder buyerS’ Guide. If you’re In the market for a new board, new bIndIngs or new boots we can help ease the paIn of tryIng to decIde what to spend your hard-earnt cash on. thIs season’s gear features some truly great advances In snowboard technology, so If you’re consIderIng upgradIng your set-up be sure to InvestIgate some of the new board desIgns on offer.
the three most Important factors of choosIng a board that wIll best suIt your needs are foot Size, heiGht and WeiGht and ridinG Style.
Board width (Foot Size):
boards
board width is determined by a measurement in millimetres or centimetres of the narrowest point of a board’s waist. the deciding factor when choosing the ideal board width is the size of a rider’s feet. too narrow a board and you will suffer from heel and toe drag thus hindering your performance. too wide on the other hand and you’ll lose a lot of your responsiveness. you should try and get a board that is narrow enough to accommodate your foot size at your lowest stance angle. It is desirable to have one to two centimetres of overhang to ensure the pressure points in your feet are directly over the edges.
Board length (height/Weight):
a general rule to follow with board length is that shorter boards are better for freestyle riding and longer boards are better for backcountry riding. but board length is also determined by your height and your weight.
height – first the top of your board should come up to the same height as between your chin and eyes. too long a board for a short person can really restrict their responsiveness, and vice versa for taller people.
weight – simple rule of thumb is the more your body weighs then the more board length you’re going to need. for a reference point try this guide below: • 144cm: 32-54 kg • 148cm: 34-57 kg • 151cm: 45-68 kg • 154cm: 52-75 kg • 158cm: 59-82kg • 162cm: 64-86kg • 166cm: 73-95kg
Board type (Riding Style) finally, inally, there are board specifics to consider, including whether you prefer to freeride, freestyle or something more all round. boards by design are quite often specific to terrain. not that you will only be able to ride your new board in a specific type of terrain or anything like that, but you’ll find your board works better in the conditions it is designed for. there are three main categories:
freeride/all Mountain – designed to ride the whole mountain from park to backcountry and pow to groomers. these boards tend to be stiffer in flex and longer than freestyle boards. Quite often they come with a set back stance, meaning you can set your bindings allowing for more nose for powder riding. they are often designed to be directional in shape, usually going from a softer nose to stiffer tail. freestyle – designed more for sliding rails, spinning off jumps and riding the pipe. these boards tend to be softer in flex and shorter than freeride boards. Quite often they come with more centred stance options. they are often twin tip in design, meaning they are designed to land tricks normal or switch stanced. JiBs / rails – designed more with the needs of rail riding in mind. these boards tend to be quite softer in flex, making it easier to press the board on rails and boxes. these boards tend to give you that playful, creative licence to put your body in positions probably not achievable on stiffer contemporary boards.
ENVIRONMENTALLY AWARE
ARbOR SNOWbOARdS Since 1995, Arbor’s designs have been ecologically based, and for most of that time the only environmentally friendly alternative available. through the years, a lot of companies have jumped onboard the cleaner, greener bandwagon, but few have shown the same dedication that arbor has towards finding more environmental friendly alternatives to materials commonly used in snowboard production. for example, the coda and Westmark models both employ a bamboo-reinforced wood core, an initiative that comes backed with a two-year warranty. bamboo is one of the strongest materials on the planet and has a weight-to-strength ratio superior to steel, yet it is light, flexible, and resistant to compression, remarkably green and is an incredibly renewable resource. if you’re conscious of the environmental ramifications of spending your hard-earnt dollars then look no further than arbor. What type of riding do you tend to do the most: park, probably just ’cause it’s the most convenient. Why do you ride your chosen board out of the range: the artifact 1985 (reverse camber) has the perfect amount of flex for all-around riding. super easy to bend, but still manages to perform at high speeds and over big jumps. any tuning techniques: I usually go for as long as possible without waxing (not the best for your board), blunt edges for jibbing, semi-sharp edges for jumps. What do you like about your bindings: the toe cap is really comfortable and easy to use because it moulds to your boot.
FEMALE
also, they are light and have never broken. toecap straps or foot straps on your bindings: as stated above, toe caps for sure. any forward lean: nah, I don’t think I’ve ever tried it. how do you like your boots to fit: as tightly as sardines are packed in tin cans. do you use mouldable innersoles or liners: yeah, my boots are definitely mouldable. best tip for someone setting up a board: set your board to the conditions. What’s hot this year on the hill: tight pants, swivels tricks on boxes and 3rd chapter tall tees or riding hoodies.

WhAT'S NEW k2 FLATLINE TEChNOLOgY brand new to K2’s line of snowboards this year is their zero camber construction available on the Slayblade, believer, eco pop and airdu board models. the flat zero camber allows for a consistent and reliable feel under your feet and is the most requested camber technology from the k2 team riders. with flatlIne technology you instantly get that broken in and comfortable feel of a board that still delivers brandnew pop and responsiveness. with zero camber you are no longer loading and unloading the camber to pop and initiate turns. think about how you ride a traditional cambered board. your weight is pushing down on the board driving the contact points into the snow, which is what gives you grip and helps steer the board. this downward weight also is what "loads" the board for a series of motions. the problem is all this loading and unloading creates leg fatigue and defeats the purpose of speed as it creates drag and slows you down. well by removing the camber and keeping the board flat you’re not loading or unloading it any more. this is reducing the drag you get at the contact points from pushing them into the snow. your legs aren’t constantly using micro muscles for every little adjustment when you ride either. so do your legs a favour, visit www.k2snowboarding.com for more info.

boots If there Is anythIng that can ruIn your day rIdIng, It’s uncomfortable boots.
to be responsive, your snowboard boots need to fit your feet like a glove. you want a snug fit all over with your toes just touching the end and secure on your heel. Ideally the boot should move with your foot rather than your foot moving inside the boot. each person has a differing foot shape so it pays to try out a few different brands of boots to find one that best meets your needs. while hile your boots may feel tight in the shop, over time the boot’s
liner will pack down and take the shape of your foot, resulting in it feeling roomier. most manufacturers also now offer heat-mouldable liners with their boots, which can prove to be a godsend in terms of additional comfort. some require professional heating in a shop while others can be heated simply using a hair dryer. either way heat-mouldable liners will conform to the shape of your foot quicker than a regular liner.

bindings when It comes to choosIng bIndIngs, here are some sImple rules to keep In mInd.
choose hoose something comfortable and lightweight, but yet still strong and durable. make ake sure your bindings are totally and wholly adjustable. you ou need to be able to set yourself up with a stance that best suits your riding. don’t let your bindings dictate your stance. be e sure to get the right size binding to fit your boots. sounds ounds simple we know, but you’d be surprised how many people make this mistake. make ake sure your boot fits snugly inside the binding and the binding straps have the capability to reach across the boot for tightening.
hAVE YOu TRIEd CAP STRAPS: Cap straps are basically a cup that goes over the front toe region of the boot. the purpose of the cap strap is to press the foot back and into the binding without the pressure that the normal top strap exerts on the front of the foot. cap straps allow for a tighter fit into bindings and help alleviate foot pain at the same time. originally designed by technine, many manufacturers have since followed suit and offer the option of cap straps.

What type of riding do you tend to do the most: these days it seems to be less park and more around the mountain/backcountry riding. Why do you ride your chosen board out of the range: the sub pop is the ultimate rail board. It has rocker and camber, a bevelled base and edge with a nice soft flex. any tuning techniques: Just a slight all-over de-tune for this board. because of the bevelled edge, I don’t have to go nuts with a file. What do you like about your bindings: they are really comfy, they have the right amount of flex, but the best part is the air cells in the heel. toecap straps or foot straps on your
bindings: best of both worlds. the raidens have a convertible toe strap so you can have it on top or over the toe. any forward lean: nup, none at all. how do you like your boots to fit: generally just has to be comfy and a good fit. do you use mouldable innersoles or liners: no, just some gel pads under my heels. best tip for someone setting up a board: don’t set your stance too wide or too “duck footed”. It might look “dope”, but it makes it harder to ride your board. drop the stance and angles and get ready to plough some trenches. What’s hot this year on the hill: third chapter tees and hoods… watch out kids, this stuff is frrresh!
