It's a long lime since the club has had a stand at the NEC so we were not able to draw. on much recent previous expenence. However I usually go to the show so had some idea what goes on and I was determined that if we were going to spendthe time, money and effort neededto do it ther we would Ilot just park four cars in a circle and get our camping chairs out. My logic for this was threefold:

I don't know how we would have managed without Bianca, sheworked all weekendand at times was the only pelson who actually knew what was going on. The image of her telling a load of middle aged blokes (including her Dad) what to do is something I will reasure Ior many years.. .

So we decidedon a format: a Dounda go for two minutes, with three cars running all the time if possible, so two kits could be recharging. We settled on a srze,25ft.by10ff, and I then found out that we neededto provide carp€t for the cars to run on! Bob Metzner (who I have yet to seewear his underpantsoutsidehis tlousels but should do, as he rescuedme at Longbridge and did so again at the NEC) came up trumpsandprovidedsomeperfect'surplus'carpet. We alsodecided thatthe weekend'sfastesldrivershouldwin a radioconrolled RC kit of a club car This prize wasjointly donatedby COOCandKamtec.

1- Sitting in a chair looking at four club cars for three days woul4 I thought, probably be quite tedious. Since going to the show and meetingpeoplecomingon th€ standI haverevisedthis ideaI must admit as I had somefascinatingchats, including one that brought teals to my eyes. 2- If we were going to spendthe money neededto elter the show we should do somethingthat would get us publicity for th€ club, and I was swe thatjust parkingsomecals wouldnot. That is, afterall, myjob on the committee and I cheerfully admit to not getting involved with the day to day ruruling of the club (well done Steve, Val, Conrad, John, Sheila and Tafi without whom we would not have a club). 3- If we were all going to be there we might as well do somethingfor a goodcauseat the sametime andthe MacmillianCancerCareschemeis something I have a soft spot for, and which also seemedto be well thought of by others on the committee. Although Friday was quieter for the public it was busy ftom my point of view as it was when most of t}Ie media and guestsarived. We were visited by representativesof the National Motor Museum Beaulieu (Stephen Vokins) and The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Gaydon(Gillian Bardsley)as well as all the major classiccar mags. Classics Monthly took the track over for twenty minutes or so and stageda lace betweenthee of their staff (Eric Richardson,JamesPage and Mike Renaut) and a representativeof the Corgi Vanguardsrange, Mark Pinnigar. Mark beat all three ofthe Classicsboys! We were also visited by ClassicCars, PracticalClassics,ClassicCar Weekly, aad various other freelance photographersand joumalists. I was busy all day dealing with guests (including TV presenter Alex fuley) and hardly saw anything ofwhat was going on with the stard itselfbul the mission was accomplished.Photogruphsof our stand made all the major Classic Car mags (including Classic ard Sportscar)except for Practical Classics and they gave us a mention in the text. I must at this Doint thank Bob Metzner and Dave Morris who ran ttle COOC side ofthe standwonderfully all clay;signing up new members, answering tecbnical queries and taking money for the model mcing. Ably assistedby Don Wood they did a brilliant job and I am awarethat I was not about much on the Friday so again thanks chaps; we could not have done it without you. We made it through Friday having leamt lots of lessons and on the Sahrday the club side ofthings was run by Paul Curtis, Lynda Knott, Mark Dunnett and Pogie Fisk. Again they all did a graat job and Kamtec Keith's RC team had a busier day but were expandedby other volunteers from the RC world. A bigger crowd was drawn to the stand by the RC expertsdoing demosevery so often and we ran at almost full capacity all day.

The weekend came to a dramatic climax at 4PM when Sharon Battersby from Macmillan came to Dresentthe orize to the wioner and collect our takings. We had a very aloserace-off betweentwo people and had to wait to Dresentthe orize until we had given them both a chanceto havea firial 2 minute'heateach. All nail Siting stuffbut the winner bv halfa lao after tlte race offwas Rob Hambridee from Burton on Trent wbo comirleted27.4 laps in 2 minutes. I don't think I have felt as exhaustedas I did on that Sundaynight in my entire life; I eveu fell asleep in the bath. I have heard people criticise the orsadsers of the NEC event but I have to sav thev could not havebeenirore helpfirl. They did makea mistakere tire supplyof our lights but they organiseda refirnd without aly quibbles and were generally very helpful. The only criticism I would have was that the show took place on RemembranceSunday. The organisersbroadcast over the tannoy at a few minutes before I 1, saying they were going to observethe two minutes silence in a few minutes time and indicating they would say when it was going to start. However tley tlrcn did not broadcastagain until tley said the silence was ov€r. We were actually stood talking about the fact it must be about due to start wh€r they announced it had finishe4 a great shame becauseit's an important annual event. which I felt the show should have honoured, It was also somethingwhich I personally was both saddenedaad embarrassedby, it's importart that we remember... However it was a great four days and well worth the effort. The club raised €492 for the Macmillan cancer care scheme, which I was yery pleased about, and I think all who volunteered had a good time. If I have missed anyone by name I apologise, I had too many great membershelping to mention everyonebut thalks very much to all.

The real cars being displayed got a grcat deal of attention as well; Keith Bultock had set his Sun-Torh bed up with a large doll in a sleepingbag, which madepeople look twice. It receivedmany positive aommonts fiom a curious public all fascinated by this wonderful vehicle's extremely pmctical design. The engine bay of Rex Cleaver's .4105 Westminster&ew many admiring glancesas well, I am sure he must clean it after every drive.. . Whilst John'sstunningly original low mileage Oxford V brought back memories for many including a lady who burst into teals when being allowed to sit iII the driving seat becauseit was exactly the sameas her late Father'scar, which shehad learnt to ddve in. With Bianca having taught the ever helpful aad resourceful Andy how to use the lap timing computer and even more RC guys to help we really had the model racing cars on great money raising form for Sunday. The COOC side of things was ably looked after by Keith Bullock, Rex Cleaveq Conrad Parr, Lynda (again), Bob and Dave (again) and various others who mucked in at ditrerent times. I even managed to have a quick look around the show and buy some HT leads.

A few months ago while searchingebay for Wolseley parts etc, I cameacrossa 4 volume set of motor repair manuals from the late 1950's.There was no other interest, so the set was mine for a copper under !10 including postage. Although the 4 volumes really pre-date the Farina range of vehicles, they still provide an excellentsoulce of referenceon the maintenance and repair of cars and components. Dating fiom a time when parts were repaired and re-conditioned ratherthan replaced.

Countlessnostalgic illushations, picturesand diagmmsare usedto help demonstrate the repairs being undertaken, covering a vast range of makes and models and techniques of the day. I have seen two different sets of manuals form the late 1950's 'Motor Repairs & Overhauling' and 'The Modern Motor Engineer'. I would recommend either set to anyone with a generalinterestin mechanicsof classicvehicles. Simon Thornton ru stJ,wing@Utin ter n et com

As I work Sundays(clergy do (l)) we rarely havethe chanceto get to rallies and showsthesedays so this year we thought we would go to the Tom Rolt in May, which confusingly was flagged up as a three day eventby the Tal-yllyn Railway but as a two day â‚Źventon most of the publicity on the Internet. We had beento this a few times about twenty yearsago as we were then membersofthe Railway, and in thosedays althoughthe Monday was busiestthe Saturdaywasprobably as,ifnot more, significant than the Sunday. Saturday26th. May dawned al1das plannedwe setofffor the Tom Rolt, had a look aroundthe ground wherethesewas very little happening, and waited for ihe rest ofthe COOC gang to arrive fron1Bala for the advertisedBBQ. And waited. And waited. And had our free complimentary ride on the railway. And came back. And waited. And had a look around the ground -

by then some other COOC membeis had arrived - just two - and waited again. Eventually aroLrnd8.30 p.m. we went home, having despiteall had a good day and made a couple ofnew fiiends. It seemsthesedays Saturdayis now viewed as a 'settingup day' ; as to the COOC BBQ, this appea$ to have happenedaway from the actual site - it would havebeengood ifthe vemrefor this had beenspelt out in the Rosette Recorderpublicity beforehandfor thoseofus not coming ftom Bala!!! lnternotionol C@OC Juan Carlos Tirzzolino sent in these photos of various Di Tella vehicles in the city of Buenos Aires in Argentina. As most of you will know, Siam di Tella is an Argentine compaay which was founded in l9l l. The name Siam is an acronlm for Secci6n Industrial Amasadoras Mec6nicas.Car model Siam di Tella 1500, basedon the British BMC Farina seriesin the early 1960s,becamevery popular among taxi drivers of Buenos Aires city. As you can see, there are still many fine exampleson the sheetstoday, including some 'Siambrettas'! Thanks to Juan as usual.

The centrespreadin RRl19 certainly did not do justice to the Club's first annualroadrun. Dave Pagehassentus thesepictureswhich, addedto Lee's from RR119 give a much better picture of that remarkableday. Dave irlsotells us that plans are well advancedfor another road run this year. The idea is to choosea different finish point and maybe have a dillerent finish each year.Get it in your diariesassoonashe setsthe date!

A Sad Farewell Sadlythe time hascom€for me to t€rminatemy membenhipof COOC. The reason?I have reluctantlyparted with my lovely Austin A60 Cambridge saloon,KGU 328 D, a cumulusgreylsnowberrywhite gem with red leather seats. ln €xchangefor our black Austin A40 Somersetfor which he receiveda chequefor!75, my fatherboughtour new car on22ndApril, 1966 fiom East City Garages (Kingsland) Ltd. of

then little extraslike a fog lamp, wing mirrors, aerial, mats, demister panel, etc. KGU has remained in the . family ever since. On the death of my father in l9?6, my moth€r took her overand continu€d to dJiveheruntil she was 86. She then becamemine to use and I ini€rited her when my mother passed away in 2000 aged100.As th€ yearshav€ \ passe4 I found that I was drjving her lessand lessas traffic has increased:the roadshavebecomeso busy locally that it was becomingdifficult to nip acrossthem. so a moderncar had to be the answerfor daily us€.I continuedto drive KGU on occasionsand I can say that almost without exception, whereverI parked somebodywould comeup and admireher and tell me that he/shehad owneda Cambridgeor a member of their family had done so. I am sure all COOC membersare familiarwith this kind of conversation.Every time I went out, heads turned and in halt€d traffic, neighbouringdriv€rswould castglances.I havehadmanyoffersto buy her put through my letterbox,an offer from Germanyand I had a motorcyclerider follow me homefor miles one day in the hope,it turnedout, ofmaking me an offer. I havethe occasionto drive to WindsorCastleevery four yearsfor a regularfunctionand I simply loveddriving sedatelyalongth€ Long Drive in WindsorCreat Park, and she becamea favouite of the staff manningthe CastleCar Park.

Here, former member Hazel Oberst exprcsses her sadnessat parting with her dear old A.60 after 42 years,as well as leavingthe COOC...

Whereis shenow? Well, in l9?5 we were rcconrmended to a young garage owner of 26 and ever sincethen, Ron Ryall of RMC Garages,Dews Lane, Harefieldin Middlesex(Tel: 01895823488)hastak€ncareofKGU. In 1975 at the time that BMC had becomeBritish Leylan4 they offeredbody panels for sale for the Oxford and Cambrideewhich were stackedin a field. Lookingaheadmy fatherdecidedto buy someandpurchasedfour doors, four sills, and four wings for the p ncely sum of f,95l4/-.Thesewe storedin the basem€ntofhouse ofa friend in Wandswo h. our havins no room at home. rheo\lnerof thehousedecidedto more andthe.parepanel. Unfortunarely. had to find a new hom€.We could not find one. so my fatherdecided ,-! that at elevenyearsold in 1977,he would ask Ron to re-buildKGU. Ron did so and has a photographicrecordat every stageof the \ rebuild. He has takencare ofher ever sinceand is devotedto her What betterhomefor her than with him? So in Julv last yeat shejoined Ron'scollectionofcars in a largebam and he tells me he recentlytook her to her first shoq something ILhad neverdone. I told hlm him not to part wrth with her as long as I am alive and he saidthat he would keepher until the end of his life. I have also passedon to Ron a completefile of every documentaboutKGU from the first invoice.includinsall the servicingand repairinvoices. The costofa 3,000mile service, four tubelesstyres, MOT, six gallons of petrol, 7 €ngine nsine oil etc. amountedIo f29l2ll0 f29/2/10 l!! Thereis letterfrom mv father to British Levland dated Mav 1974 in which he repofledthal the milometerhad jumped from 2q.94'lto 40.000 miles and this would aflect a tnde-in, British Leyland reDlied that nothine could be done about the -speedometer as "ii is illegal to deliberatelyalter the mil€aserecorded". KGU also featuredin the magizine ClassicCar Mart in November I995. Herearetwo photographs; one takenby Ron on the day I partedwith KGU. I look happy but insidewas feelingbereft. Isn't it strange how one can becomeattachedto a lump of metal? The other is a Vanguardminiature replica I bought in exactly the same colours which servesas a happym€mentoof a much loved vehicle. By the way, I can thoroughlyrecommendRon and his team for bodlnvorkrepairs;he hatesmoderncarsbut revelsin the classics. All good wish€sfor continuedsuccessto COOC - I will miss the Rosette Recorder We arc reD' son!- to bse ),au Hazel but, or behalf of a rDut suppott aret the rcots. - TulJ
