Stevens County Fair Board members are busy preparing for the Stevens County Fair which will be held August 7-11. Letter to our fair patrons Welcome to the 140th annual Stevens County Fair; it seems that one fair just gets finished and the planning for the next one is underway in just days. Last year’s fair was a huge success and now we are finding our dedicated fair board working hard to bring in another successful event in 2013.

The premium book is hot off the press and filled with all sorts of information about scheduled events for the 4-H youth, entertainment at this year’s fair, open class entry information, the Enduro Race, or the Demo Derby. The premium book contains a map of the fairgrounds to easily find where an event is taking place. Please also note all the wonderful sponsors of the Stevens County Fair. The businesses who purchase advertisement space in the premium book or those who donate towards entertainment help to defray the costs to put on the Stevens County Fair. We appreciate all of the donations and ads very much!

Because of these donations, we are able to offer Free Entertainment, Free Parking, and a Free Gate!

Thursday is Day Care Day at the fair. Day care providers are encouraged to ride the city bus and come to the fairgrounds between 9 and 11 a.m. There will be several emergency vehicles for the children to check out. They can also visit the old schoolhouse. The FFA youth will be giving the children a tour through the remodeled children’s barnyard and will give a lesson on agriculture. At

the end of the tour, there will be a magic show and a special treat for the children.

Friday is Senior Citizens Day at the fair. When senior citizens use the coupon located in this premium book, you can redeem it at any of the food vendors for 50 cents off a food item. The coupon is good for persons 62-years of age or older for one time only and only on Friday.

We have some excellent grandstand performances lined up: Tonic Sol-fa on Thursday night, Triple B rodeo on Friday night, Vintage Car race and Enduro Race on Saturday night, and the Demo Derby on Sunday night.

We have several free stages that will have all sorts of musical and magical acts. We will also showcase local talent by having local dancers and Tae Kwon Do and Judo demonstrations. Then there is all the wonderful fair food.

Wayne Lemmerman selected as 2013 District 7 Fair Person of the Year

This January 2013, at the Minnesota Federation of County Fairs’ State Convention, Wayne Lemmerman received the honor of being chosen District 7’s Fair Person of the Year.

Wayne is an active member of the Stevens County Fairboard and has been for over 15 years. He has served in the positions of Vice President and Member-at-Large on the Executive Board, and serves on the Long Range Planning Committee. Wayne “lives” at the fair year round. Once the current year’s fair has ended, he is already planning “in his mind” of what he wants to get accomplished for next year’s fair. Wayne is also active with the Rock the Groundz committee that has put on a weekend of rock music performances the last three years at the fairgrounds. Wayne’s special

project during the fair is the well attended Demo Derby. He does all the organizing and behind-the-scenes work for putting on this successful event. Because of Wayne’s background in welding and manufacturing, he has been instrumental in designing benches and picnic tables that are set around the fairgrounds during the fair. They are well-built and comfortable and fairgoers use them to enjoy eating fair food, or just taking a break to rest at the fair.

The benches and picnic tables are used to advertise local businesses or are memorials for deceased loved ones. Wayne can’t seem to catch up on all the orders for people wanting to sponsor benches or tables.

Wayne is married to Shellie and they have two daughters.

When there are things to do at the fairgrounds you can bet that all four members of the Lemmerman family will be there helping.

The family is very active in 4-H as well.

Wayne works as a supervisor at Backman Welding and Robotics. He has lots of opportunity to meet and visit with companies and individuals in Stevens County and beyond. Through this networking he has brought many new opportunities to the Stevens County Fair, including the first business employee appreciation gathering during the fair. This event brought many new people to the Stevens County Fair who might not otherwise have attended. Many were so impressed that they have plans to attend again next year. Wayne is a “get-er-done” type of guy. He knows what needs to be done and he pitches in to get that work done without fail and this is just one of the many reasons why Wayne was an excellent choice for Fair Person of the Year for District 7.

Enter your Open Class Exhibits at the Stevens County Fair It’s that time of year again to think about what you will enter in Open Class at the Stevens County Fair. Be it your favorite picture you took this past year, a quilt you made, sewing, knitting, tatting, or any favorite craft project you completed; those beautiful flowers you have; a big tomato and other vegetables from your garden; that tasty tempting baking and canning you do, we’d love to put them on display for you and see what a judge thinks of it.

Anyone from preschooler to senior citizen is eligible to enter. Our premium list includes entry lots for many types of exhibits – from farm crops, fruits, vegetables, and flowers, to canned and baked goods, to beautiful quilts and needlework, to impressive photographs. Children are invited to show their creativity and talents with arts and crafts projects, collections, baking, gardening, or photography.

We have security cameras watching over our exhibits in the building this year.

There have been many additions made in the Open Class lots, be sure to read carefully before bringing your entries. Changes have been made in the photography section. Due to space constraints, we are eliminating pictures entered on tagboard.

Instead, we ask that you frame or matte your picture for display.

Entry day for Open Class is Wednesday, Aug. 7. You may bring your exhibits in from 8 a . m . t o 5 p. m . Open Class animal entries will also be on Wednesday, Aug. 7—BUT the animals will not be brought to the fairgrounds until Thursday, Aug. 8.

You may pre-register on-line at www.scfair.net by Tuesday, Aug. 6 by 7 p.m. or use the form included in this booklet.

If you have more than 20 exhibits, please enter them before 2 p.m. All entries must be ready to be displayed at entry time. If you are entering flowers this year, we are now providing white vases (tall and short) to display your entries. Please leave a generous length of stem on your entry. Please check the premium lot numbers carefully to be sure you have your exhibits entered into the correct lot. Only ONE entry per lot is allowed. The rules are listed at the top of the premium list.

Special awards are given each year in some categories in addition to ribbons and premiums. Several entries in various classes are chosen as Best of Show Award Winners. Many area businesses also donate prizes in addition to the fair premiums.

The Open Class building is open for all fairgoers to view the exhibits from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. On Thursday, the building will open after the judging is completed. Exhibits will be released on Sunday, Aug. 11 from 8 : 3 0 - 9 : 3 0 p. m . No early releases.

Yelling at, use of profanity toward, or interrupting an official while they are trying to monitor the event will result in RED FLAGGING of the event and offender(s) will be escorted from the event area before the event will resume. This will also mean disqualification and forfeiture of fees/winnings. Drivers-tell your pit crew to keep their tongues in check, as this goes for them as well!

5. All drivers and pit crew, and anyone in the pits, are required to attend the pit meeting.

6. The officials reserve the right to disqualify any demo unit or driver determined to be unsafe or not in spirit of rules before, during or after event. All calls are final.

7. All motion will be stopped immediately upon signal from the official in case of fire, injury, or emergency.

DRIVER’S DOOR 12. Must be painted contrasting color. May have safety support bolted or welded not to exceed 6" passed either edge of the door. Other doors must be chained only. Wagons no wire ties in back windows.

INSIDE THE CAR 13. Maximum of 2 batteries and 1 gas tank. Must be covered and mounted securely. No wire or rubber straps for hold downs.

H O O D A N D T RU N K 14. Hood must remain in original position. Must be able to be opened. May be chained or 4 hood and 4 trunk pins. 1" diameter maximum Only 2 may go to the frame. You may weld or bolt to frame.

Washer must remain separate from each other. 6" diameter maximum. If you put pins through your frame you may use a 3 x 3 x 1/4 plate on top and bottom of frame. But cannot be welded to the frame and you may use jam nuts. Front pins may be welded only to core support. Need 12" access hole in hood and trunk for fire.

FRAME 15. No reinforcement. No floor plating. Suspect frames will be drilled. No filling of frames.

Family Fun Show Carnival Family Fun Show Carnival will again fill the midway at the Stevens County Fair. Not only is this fair a free gate fair, it has one of the most affordable midways in the region. If you stop and buy advance ride tickets, you only pay the low price of $1.70 per ride.

If you compare this to other fairs or even Valley Fair you are getting a great buy. Family Fun Shows is one of the few that still take the one ticket per ride any age. What does that mean? No matter how young or old you are, you can ride any ride at the fair for just the one ticket. You can buy advance ride tickets in many locations, and they are sold in strips of 10 for $17.

The advance ride tickets are o n l y on sale until the first day of the fair, then you will have to pay the higher amount at the midway box office, and even this is a great buy compared to other fairs and carnivals. Many of you have been at other fairs and when you look at the ride prices, you see costs of over four dollars a ride and the need for more than one ticket per ride, but, not here at the Stevens County Fair. It’s one low price and one ticket for all rides.

Advance ride tickets may be found at any of the banks in Stevens County, Unger’s Furniture and at Willie’s Super Valu in Morris. If you are one of the few that don’t get to Morris, you can also mail a check, prior to the cut-off date to: Stevens County Fair Office c/o Ride Tickets P.O. Box 622 Morris, MN 56267 and we will hold them at the fair office for a Will-Call-

Pickup. For those of you that use wrist bands, we will again see that offered at the fair on Thursday night from 6 to 10 p.m. at a cost of $20. Wrist bands are sold on the midway that night starting at 5 p.m. Please note your advance ride tickets are good to use during wrist band night, as well as, every day. The midway opens on Thursday at 4 p.m. and the remainder of the fair at 1 p.m. each day.

Greg and Gail, the Family Fun Show owners, offer rides for all ages including kid rides, major rides and family rides, all at the one low price. You can check out some of the rides you will see at the Stevens County Fair online at the carnival’s web site www.familyfunshows.com The site also offers a lot of information about the show, their 2013 route, listings of the great food they offer and some of the good old info of why we have this Midway come back to our fair year after year. 2. No trucks, Jeeps, hearses, limousines, ambulances, 4x4s, or utility vehicles.

3. Full frame imperials allowed, as well as, Imperial sub-frames.

P R E PA RT I O N 1. All glass; including windshield, side & rear windows, head & tail lights, and marker lights, must be removed. Air bags must be removed.

2. Sunroofs must be covered with sheet metal and properly secured.

3. All exterior chrome molding strips, hubcaps, emblems, wiper arms, plastic grills, outside door handles, and plastic or fiberglass header panels must be removed before entering fairgrounds.

4. All carpeting, interior molding strips, rear seats, headliners, inner door panels, and any other flammable material must be removed before entering fairgrounds.

5. Dashboards are recommended.

6. Vehicles must be swept free of all debris.

7. No profanity of any kind of allowed to be painted on vehicle.

8. Driver’s door and roof MUST be painted white with your number painted clearly and visibly or you must run a roof sign. ROOF SIGN HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. I N T E R I O R A N D B O DY 1. Two battery may, any size permitted. Must be securely mounted to floor and covered.

2. Push buttons permitted, must be clearly marked in plain view. NO LOOSE WIRING. 3. Original fuel tank must be removed and replaced with marine type, plastic or steel tank, and securely mounted to rear floor and covered. Maximum 8 gallon.

4. All fuel lines must be secured, clamped, & leak-proof. Any car leaking fuel will result in disqualification.

5. Electric fuel pumps are permitted, but must have a visible shut-off switch and in plain view, for safety.

6. Doors must be fastened shut by wire, chain, banding or welding.

Any door that comes open will result in disqualification. It is highly recommended that the driver’s door be reinforced.

7. Only rust holes may be patched with no thicker than 14-gauge sheet metal.

8. It is MADATORY that a 4-point type safety cage be placed in driver’s compartment. 2 bars, not to exceed 4” diameter or square. One (1) bar horizontal across dash and one (1) bar horizontal behind seat.

Two (2) adjoining bars, perpendicular to dash and seat bar, to attach then together. End plates not to exceed 12” square AND CANNOT EXCEED 6” PAST THE DRIVER’S SEAT. Bars must be securely welded.

9. Gas tank protector MAY be used.

10. Roll-over bar is permitted and must be attached to safety cage only!

11. Rubber body mounts may be replaced with maximum 5/8” bolts and 3” washers and solid mounted to frame in factory location ONLY. 12. Must have 2 window bars in windshield. Flat stock (3” wide max by 1/4” thick) or chains may be used. You may have one (1) read window bar, flat stock or chain.

13. You may cut wheel wells for clearance. You can bold wheel wells with 3/8” bolts 1” washers in eight (8) places per wheel.

H O O D, D E C K L I D, A N D TA I LG AT E 1. Hood must have a 10” hold cut into either side of carburetor, unless using headers.

2. Fuel injected cars must have a 6” hold cut above fuel injection unit.

3. Hoods must be open for inspection and then fastened shut by #9 wire, banding, bolts, or chain. Two (2) strands of wire per hold.

Maximum 6 locations. Two (2) locations may run from hood to bumper with wire, chain, or banding. If using bolts they can not exceed 5/8” x 2”. Angle iron can not exceed 3” x 3” x 1/4”.

4. Deck lids and tailgates may be fastened shut by wire, banding, chain, welding, or bolting in 6 locations. Bolts must be used same as hood. If welding, you may weld solid with 3” x 1/4” plates.

5. You may use up to 1” ready rod in two (2) places that go through the frame at your core support. 4” x1/4” plate or washer. You may do this in the rear, through the trunk in two (2) places only.

CHASSIS AND FRAME 1. Frames cannot be reinforces or strengthened in anyway whatsoever! NO loaded frames! Frames will be checked thoroughly!

2. Pre-ran frames may be repaired at a minimum! No extra metal added.

3. Notching is permitted.

4. Frame seams may be welded. No ADDING of metal! This will be strictly enforced!

5. Official’s decisions on frame are final.

6. Trailer hitches must be removed.

7. No special bumpers may be used.

8. Bumper may be welded solid to frame but cannot re-enforce frame in anyway. No added steel.

9. A chain must be wrapped around the bumper. Chains may be bolted or welded to frame.

SUSPENSION 1. LEAF CONVERSTIONS: Seven (7) springs—60” long max—2 1/2” wide x 5/16” thick max—1” stagger required. Welding rear shackle allowed. Shackles may be no larger than 8” long x 3” wide x 1/4” thick. Front spring mounts to be no larger than 6” long x 3” wide x 1/4” thick. All bolts for conversion not to exceed 3/4”. NO welding on springs. NO duct tape on springs. Clamp size 2” wide x 1/4” thick, eight (8) per car allowed.

2. Rear ends maybe 8-lug.

3. Hump plates may be used it you do not convert your leafs. 1/4” thick x 4” wide x 24” long, only two (2) per car. If can be welded solid, must be welded to the outside rear frame rails ONLY, somewhere above the rear axle.

4. You may use 4 leaf clamps per side (2 in front of axel and 2 behind, 4 per side).

5. You may chain your humps. Frame rail to axle only, one (1) chain per side.

6. You may reinforce tie rods and control arms.

7. You may lock front suspension.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION 1. Any motor/transmission combination is permitted.

2. Motor and transmission mounts may be chained or welded, so long as it does not strengthen the frame in anyway.

3. Hand throttles permitted.

4. Shifting linkage may be altered.

5. Air cleaner mandatory. No ether allowed.

6. Transmission coolers are permitted and must be placed behind driver’s seat. All lines must be securely clamped and leak-proof.

7. Distributor protectors and engine protectors will be permitted! NO KICKERS to the dash bar will be allowed. You may use an engine cradle if you are swapping motors.

8. Gas tank protectors may be used, but CANNOT touch any part of the car. It must be free floating. You must attach to rear seat bar and must have a minimum of 8” from rear doors or body of the car and must have at least 2” between protector and rear panel.

T I R E S, R A D I ATO R , A N D FA N 1. Maximum 16” tires. Nor liquid in tires. Tubes acceptable. Double tires allowed.

2. No studded tires. No tires screws, rivets or bead lock on rims. No split rims. Wheel weights must be removed. You may use valve stem protectors.

3. Radiator must remain in stock location.

4. Steel clutch fans must be covered. Electric fans permitted.

S A F E T Y A N D RUNNING 1. Each driver/car is only allowed one (1) re-inspection.

2. Only driver & one (1) crew member permitted during inspection.

3. All cars must comply with the rules.

4. Inspections will be thorough! Official’s decision is final!

5. DOT or SNELL approved helmet mandatory.

6. Safety belts required. Eye protection must be worn. Long pants, sleeves, and gloves are a must.

7. A 2.5 lb. working fire extinguisher must be mounted and properly secures within driver’s reach.

8. Heats will be divided up according to the number of cars, may be only one heat.

9. Driver will go in his assigned heat and position. Any attempted changing of assigned heat & position will result in disqualification.

10. No deliberate driver’s door hits.

11. Do not get out of your car unless instructed by track personnel.

12. Any door that comes open will result in disqualification.

13. Any car smoking excessively or leaking fuel will be disqualified.

14. Boundaries must be maintained at all times.

15. One (1) minute time limit on all hits.

16. Hits must be aggressive! Not making aggressive hits is considered “sandbagging.” Sandbagging will not be tolerated for any reason.

17. All cars must have dependable brakes.

18. When the sire sounds, all drivers must stop immediately.

19. All drivers must attend driver’s meeting.

20. All work must be done before arrival.

1. Absolutely NO frame swapping, extending, shortening, or altering of frame or frame cross members at all. Must be same frame that came with pickup from factory for that year.

2. No swapping of front suspension from coil or leaf spring to a straight axle type suspension, must retain same type of factory suspension for that year pickup. Refer to Rule #21 as well.

3. If it’s not stated in the rules DO NOT DO IT. You must also abide by the general rules 4. Motor & transmission of choice (crossbreeding) is allowed. Motor and transmission may be chained down. You may weld mounts and or use 4, 2”X1/4”thick straps mounted anywhere on engine only, and welded flat to the top of frame within 2” in front and or behind aarms, or to engine cross member. If we feel it’s too much or adds strength you will cut.

5. Metal fuel tank 6 gallon max boat style or approved fuel cell.

Absolutely no plastic tanks. Must be located behind driver in rear seating area either in center or directly behind driver seat (extended cab or suburban). Any regular cab should be in the center of box up against cab. You must have a metal shield over fuel tank (splash guard) if you are NOT using a typical fuel cell. No bungees or rubber mats. Tank must be securely fastened to the floor or box of cab. Gas lines CANNOT go through rear window area, cut large hole through box and cab. Make sure lines are protected and secure. You may put a small cage around fuel tank, only attached to floor or body, not frame . You may also have a roll loop in the box up against the cab with kickers no farther back then the front of front spring mounts.

Must be min of 2 inches in front of spring mounts 6. 2 batteries are allowed. Must be securely fastened to floor in front passenger seat area, and covered with a floor mat or rubber. No bungies.

7. DOT approved tires on drive wheels. Front tires may be non DOT type tire, no tractor type treads. NO SPLIT RIMS AT ALL. Tires may be flapped, doubled up or foam filled, we don’t want any flats.

8. Bumpers of choice. Brackets (any factory made bumper brackets, or 4” angle choose 1 not both) may be welded to bumper and to frame front and back, brackets are 1 per side of frame not on top or bottom of frame, do not wrap brackets around frame. Bumper shocks may be welded in place and made solid. No added steel of any kind, just use welder. You may bolt shocks in place using only factory holes, and no cross bolting thru shock body. If you do not weld you must have 2 chains or (#9 wire 4 loops) per bumper around bumper. Outer skin of bumper may be fully welded to inner part of bumper ends may be cut and wrapped over, but put a 1/2” hole in ends for inspection. Car bumpers are allowed, no Ag. Or homemade. You may box in the front 8” of c-channel frame with 1/4” thick material max. For sole purpose of attaching bumper. You are allowed to use stated brackets and shocks only. NO SQUARE OR ROUND TUBE INSERTED OR ALONG SIDE FRAME AT ALL. Must have front and rear bumpers. 4 total 2”x10”x1/8” thick straps are allowed from box/frame to top of rear bumper to keep it attached.

9. Axle may be made full posi. Stock type radiator in stock location are allowed. Headers, transmission coolers are allowed. If no headers a 12” dia hole must be cut in hood.

10. Core support: you are allowed 1 piece of 2”x2”x1/4” angle across top of core support with a single 2”x2”x1/4” piece of angle iron from top of support no further back than 16” from stock support location welded to top or frame only and parallel with frame rail 1 per side.

NO gussets. Frame seams may be fully welded entire length 1/2” wide bead use welder only, no added steel. No attaching inner fender to frame in any way.

11. Hood may be moved forward and wrapped over front end no further down than the top of bumper may be chained but not welded to bumper or frame. Hole in hood must be big enough for inspection, may weld hood down. Hood opening for headers may have up to (10) 3/8 bolts per opening. Wrapping of fenders, doors, and front fenders around headlight area is allowed, may be bolted or welded. 12, 3/8” bolts and 2” dia fender washers are allowed on all 4 wheel wells. Rear part of box (from tire humps rearward) may be folded down and attached to box floor only, not frame, if you do not have a tail gate.

12. Use of #9 wire, 2 per rear window opening, 4 loops or 8 strands max per loop on saddagons only to hold roof down. These may go to frame.

13. Driver door bar is MANDATORY. Build drivers door to take a hit.

Door bar must be a minimum of 4” wide by 1/4” thick welded or bolted no further than 6” past each end of driver door only. If you use channel type material you must radius the ends or 45 them .Drivers door may be welded solid. Door bar may be inside and or outside, but you MUST have at least one or both in place.

14. Dash bar (1) 3” dia max may have 6x6 x1/4 plates on ends and must be either welded or bolted in place no higher than original dash height. You may have 2 behind the drivers seat bars in any pattern, use same size and attachment guidelines. Stubs from bars to floor are allowed, NOT frame. You may also have 1 door bar on drivers and passenger front doors, but must remain below window opening on inside of vehicle. A roll loop is strongly recommended either inside cab area or tight against outside of cab no wider than cab. Halo may be attached to inside cage. Halo may be attached to box floor with 6”x6” plates, if attached to frame no plates allowed, and weld directly to top of frame. Extended cabs use the 10” rule, no further than 10” from back of seat to back side of halo bar. Kickers from halo(2) are not to extend past the front rear leaf spring mount, or 6 inches past fuel tank, and attached to box floor only.

15. Distributor protectors are permitted. 1/2 inch thick max. May be bolted to intake or back of heads. Cannot be attached to any other part of motor, tranny, or vehicle. If at ANY time the protector comes in contact in any way with dash bar you will be DQ’ed. Firewall is not considered dash bar, just cannot be attached.

16. All body mounts may be removed or replaced with steel washers.

No added steel of any kind anywhere on or in vehicle unless it is directly stated in the rules. Absolutely no stuffing or putting anything of any kind inside or outside of frame unless it came from the factory on that particular vehicle, not even a little. If you are found to be cheating in any way or are unable or unwilling to make your vehicle within the rules you will simply be told to LOAD-N-GO ABSOLUTELY NO REFUNDS. All non factory plow or camper brackets must be removed. NO pinning of frame and body.

17. All doors and trunks, hatches, tail gates may be full welded on exterior only, you may use filler or 3”wide x1/4” thick steel to accomplish this. Absolutely no welding of any kind anywhere on truck except when stated. Box and cab may be connected in same manner, and or bolted. No interior seam welding.

18. You may patch rust with same thickness metal 1” past the rust. Do not cut out rust! Plating bends on pre-rans is allowed with a 1/8” thick plate only 1” past the bend no wider than the frame and only on one side. No more than 20” of plates max per side but each plate can be no longer than 6”. There must be a 2” gap between plates and welds before adding another plate. Must clearly see a bend or you will be told to remove. No making your owns bends just so you can plate it!!! Floor repairs must be sheet metal only! Re stubs are to be butt welds only, no added steel at all.

19. Hood pins (6) up front, 1”dia max only 2 may go to frame, other 4 must be located behind core support and bolted tin to tin. You may weld or bolt front 2 to frame outside of radiator area. Washer must remain free from body and separate from each other.6” diameter washer max. If you put pins through frame you may use a 3x3x1/4 plate on top and bottom of frame where pins go, but cannot be welded to frame you may use jam nuts. Hoods may have up to 24-1” long 3/8 bolts.

20. Cabs may be bolted down in 4 extra places with 3/4” bolts to the frame. Cab and box may be bolted together with 6 3/4” bolts using 4” washers. Box may be bolted down with 14 total 3/4” bolts using 4” washers. NO pinning.

21. Front suspension may be welded or bolted solid. You are allowed nothing bigger than 2x2 or 2” dia, and only one per wheel area, running vertical, (up and down) not at any angles to make front suspension solid. Tie rods may be welded only.

22. Releafing or leaf conversions in rear of pickup only are permitted but must function properly. Must retain staggered leaf pattern no welding together, you may use 6 clamps per side total including the factory ones. 12 leaf per side max. No welding rear shocks or any movable part of rear suspension. Flat stacking with leaf material is permitted. Leaf perches may be welded to frame. MAX. Bumper height is 30 inches to bottom of bumper.

New upgrades at Day Care Day at the the fair in 2013 Fair on Thursday There are new things you can see at the fair as you walk around the grounds for 2013. Thanks to the help from lots of local people and businesses that make things happen. Take your time as you walk around to see some new changes. Last year, just after the fair, the 4-H Exhibit building took on a new look with new outside walls, new back door and a steel roof. You may see the changes in the wash rack area for the livestock, as you drive by or take a trip thru the barns to see this updated area with new wash racks and staging area for judging. It always seems to rain sometime during the fair and rain water becomes a problem. We hope we solved some of this with the new tile that has been installed on the north end of the grounds. As you drive into the south parking lot you will see the changes that we plan to be working on more this summer, again adding more gravel parking lot space. There are a lot more changes that took place since last year’s fair and the Stevens County Fairboard works hard to keep your grounds looking good and making updated, needed changes to make this a fun event when you come out to the fair.

On Thursday, Aug. 8, from 9-11 a.m., day care children are invited to ride the Morris Transit Bus to the Stevens County Fairgrounds for a chance to see some emergency response vehicles, a visit to the old schoolhouse, exotic animals, and see a magic show. They will also get a tour of the FFA Kiddie Barn and the FFA students will be giving an agriculture presentation. A sweet treat will finish the tour. Please RSVP to scfair@yahoo.com

Stevens County Fair 2013 Open Class Exhibits ENTRY TIMES Open Class Exhibit Building Wednesday, August 7: 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Individuals with more than 20 exhibits must come before 2 p.m. on Wednesday

OPEN CLASS EXHIBITS Open Class Exhibits Rules & Regulations 1. The Stevens County Fair reserves the final and absolute right to interpret the terms, rules, and regulations and arbitrarily settle and determine all matters, questions, and differences in regards thereto, or otherwise arising out of, connected with or incident to the Stevens County Fair. The Superintendents of their area shall be the final arbitrator of any disputes involving exhibitors and day to day activities. The Stevens County Executive Board backs the Superintendent 100 percent.

2. The Agricultural Society reserves the right to amend or add to these rules as in its judgment may deem advisable.

3. Entries for premiums may be made by residents of Stevens County and adjoining counties only.

4. Exhibits must be grown, made or owned by the exhibitor.

5. One exhibit per person will be allowed in each lot and one exhibit cannot be entered to compete in more than one lot or 4-H. 6. All exhibits except livestock must not have been previously exhibited at the Stevens County Fair.

7. The Stevens County Agricultural Society wishes to promote a wholesome and educational event for the entire family. All exhibits and displays are subject to review by the Agricultural Society.

Any items or material deemed as inappropriate for display must be removed by exhibitor upon request by fair officials.

The following items are included in the above ban: Weapons (death stars, butterfly knives); Sexually explicit/pornographic material; and vulgar/profane materials. Exhibits and displays are meant to be enjoyed by all fairgoers.

Please help us make the fair a pleasant experience for people of all ages.

8. Exhibits must be entered correctly, ticketed properly and ready to be judged when entered, in order to be judged and premiums awarded.

9. The Agricultural Society will take every precaution for the preservation of the articles and stock on exhibition but will not be responsible for any loss or damage that may occur in the delivery, exhibition or removal of exhibits.

10. If anyone has issues or disagreements with how things are run in a building or on the Stevens County Fairgrounds over-

all, the Stevens County Fairboard reserves the rights to ask said person(s) to leave the fairgrounds.

11. Any person or group that conducts a protest action must limit its activity to the location designated by the Stevens County Fair Board. The designated location is the southeast corner of the bunker, which is in the southern parking lot on fairground property. No entrances or exits can be obstructed or limited in any way.

12. No dogs are allowed on the fairgrounds except for service dogs, and in designated areas only.

AWARDS 1. The awards in open class entries will be designated by ribbons, stickers or cards as follows: 1st Premium, blue; 2nd, red; 3rd, white.

2. Grand Champion ribbons will be awarded to exhibits of exceptional merit.

There will be no monetary prize connected with this ribbon.

3. Premiums will not be awarded unless the judge deems the exhibit worthy.

4. Any interference by exhibitors to influence or dictate the decision of the judges shall be sufficient cause for excluding his or her entry from competition.

RELEASE OF EXHIBITS 1. All exhibits, including livestock, must remain on exhibit until 8:30 p.m. Sunday, August 11. There will be no exceptions to this rule. Premiums will be forfeited if articles are removed before 8:30 p.m.

2. Exhibits will be released and premium checks awarded from 8:30-9:30 p.m. at the Open Class Exhibit Building on Sunday, August 11, 2013.

CLAIMS Persons having claims against the Stevens County Agricultural Society must present them in writing to the secretary within fifteen days after the last day of the fair.

H & H Veterinary Service has been accepted as official veterinarians for the fair.

Exhibition of Livestock and Poultry in Minnesota—Summary of State Rule General Requirements Livestock and poultry that exhibit symptoms of any infectious or communicable disease, including ringworm and warts, may not be exhibited. All animals must be examined by the official veterinarian on the day they are admitted to the exhibition and at least once daily during the exhibition. The Official Veterinarian will order the immediate removal to a quarantine facility or removal from the exhibition premises of any livestock with symptoms of infectious or communicable diseases. Animals placed in a quarantine facility must remain there until removed from the exhibition premises. They may not enter a show ring. This includes livestock with warts or ringworm.

All testing must be conducted prior to the exhibition, and a record of the test results on a test chart or Intrastate Health Certificate must accompany the tested animals. Livestock and poultry entered in a petting exhibit are not exempt from the exhibition rules if the animals are from more than one farm or

there are other animals at the exhibit.

POULTRY Poultry, except waterfowl and pigeons, must be individually identified with a leg or wing band and accompanied by a form approved by the board to show compliance with one of the following: negative test for pullorum-typhoid disease conducted within 90 days prior to the opening date of the exhibition; originate directly from parent stock tested and found negative for pullorum-typhoid disease within the last 12 months. In addition, turkeys must be negative for Salmonella typhimurium, Mycoplasma gallisepticum, and Mycoplasma synoviae.

SWINE Swine must be individually identified and must: • Have had a negative official pseudorabies test conducted within 30 days prior to the opening date of the exhibition; or • Originate directly from a qualified pseudorabies-negative herd; or • Originate directly from a Stage IV or V county or area. All 50 states are currently pseudorabies Stage V, (Pseudorabies Free Status).

SHEEP & GOATS Official Identification Required: All sheep and goats for show or exhibition, including wethers, must be officially identified. Official Scrapie identification includes Scrapie ear tags or tattoos that have been approved and registered with the Minnesota Board of Animal Health.

Exhibitors should identify.

HORSES All horses must be negative to an official test for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) within 12 months prior to the opening date of the exhibition. A test is not required for suckling foals accompanying a negative dam.

SLAUGHTER CLASSES All livestock and poultry entered in the class which are kept isolated in a separate building from all other livestock and poultry at the exhibition and which are slaughtered during or immediately following the exhibition do not need tests or individual identification.

DOGS Dogs over 6 months of age must be accompanied by a current Certificate of Rabies Vaccination issued by a Licensed Veterinarian.

Requirements for Livestock and Poultry Originating from States Other than Minnesota: Livestock and poultry originating from states other than Minnesota must meet the Minnesota Importation requirements in addition to the requirements outlined in this summary.

• All imported animals must be accompanied by a certificate of veterinary inspection.

• Ruminants originating from Michigan may not be imported into Minnesota for exhibition.

Health certificates must list the Minnesota Exhibition as consignee, and will be accepted if examination and tests are conducted within 90 days prior to the exhibition except swine pseudorabies test must be made within 30 days prior to the exhibition. The differential pseudorabies tests are not approved for exhibition.

Requirements for horses and dogs are the same as for those originating from Minnesota.

SPECIMENS For best display condition all flowers. a) Cut early in morning or afternoon. b) Use sharp knife, cut on slant. c) Place immediately in warm water. d) Remove all foliage below waterline. e) Let flowers stand for 12 to 14 hours in a cool place, out of drafts. f) Stems with sticky sap should be singed on cut edge or sealed by placing lower end of stem in boiling water for 1 to 2 minutes. g) Woody stems should be crushed to increase water.

FOODS CANNING 1. Exhibits must be in standard pint, quart, or half pint jars, unless otherwise specified, with new lids and rings.

2. Jars must be jars manufactured for canning.

3. All foods must be processed according to the recommended methods of the Extension Service of Minnesota. A boiling water bath is used for processing jam and jellies, fruits, tomatoes, and pickles and a pressure canner must be used for low acid vegetables and meats. Your processing time must be written on lid or label.

4. Jams and jellies must be sealed using a 2-piece lid. Paraffin seals are not allowed.

5. All jars must be marked with the current year on lid to ensure against entry of same jar in the fair next year.

Take a rest at the Rest Cottage Fair goers are invited to take advantage of the Rest Cottage located next to the office on the Stevens County Fair Grounds. It’s front door is located on the south side of the office building—next to the Homemakers building. It is a two-room, air conditioned facility equipped with baby crib, changing table, bed, and rocking chairs. It’s a wonderful place for feeding and caring for a child. It is also a good place for livestock exhibitors to change clothes. But anyone can enjoy the Cottage as a place for resting. Rest Cottage hours are from noon to 8 p.m. on Thursday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Fun is FREE at the fair No matter what day you come out to the Stevens County Fair you will always enjoy what you find. Free events are planned for every day of the fair. Only a few of the events repeat daily so you will want to try to enjoy some time out at the fair each day. This year we will again host the “Exotic Animal Zoo,” Wood Carving along with entertainment by; Alfy, The Mary Hall Shows, Brodini, Halls of Magic and many more that are all FREE events. Daily and evening music events will include all kinds of great music for every age. The KiwanisTalent Show, Sherwin Linton, Island Steel Drum Band, Dirt Road Prophets, Caption May I and Electric

Almighty, just to name a few, all for free. Check out all the exhibits and commercial vendors that bring their stuff for you to see. The fair days are full of 4-H events every day and they work hard to exhibit their crafts and livestock. Daily demonstrations will also be going on in the Homemakers building so make sure you check them out when you are at the fair. We have three different stage areas along with the judging area that is also used for some stage shows which makes for a busy time at the fair…. all for free Aug. 7 – 11.

If you’re hungry, then the Stevens County Fair is the place to be!

We have all kinds of food vendors, if you’re looking for homemade French fries or just a delicious bowl of soup from the 4-H Food Stand, you will find it at the fair. When numbers come out from the Minnesota State Fair, food is the biggest item they talk about. Here at the Stevens County Fair, we have again added new food vendors in our food court, and along with food booths in the Family Fun Show Carnival, you will have one of the best food selections around.

Food is what a lot of people come to the fair for. If you spend every day at the fair, you will have a hard time trying to sample all the different food items that are available. Some of the food vendors open by noon on Wednesday, August 7th. New this year is deep fried candy bars. Whatever your taste buds crave, from the good old fashioned burger to a taco or a smoothie, come on out, grab a bite and enjoy the 2013 Stevens County Fair!

Stevens County Homemakers The Stevens County Homemakers consist of 8 clubs with a total of 83 members. The homemakers take turns meeting in members’ homes once a month fall through spring. Some clubs meet during the summer. Each club sends one or two of their members to the lesson planning for the month. The lessons held in the last year were: Promoting the PRCA, Felting with Wool, Exploring the Cost of Food, Mexican Cooking, and Home Enhancing: One Drawer at a Time. The clubs usually submit recipes to be made into a cookbook every year and this year’s theme was salads.

The Stevens County Homemakers has a board called the Home Council, each club has a counselor and a co-counselor. The counselor sits on the Home Council and the Home Council makes decisions for all the clubs. If the Counselor can’t attend for some reason, then the Co-counselor usually attends. The Home Council meets in November, April, and July. The counselor and co-counselor each are expected to join a committee. These committees are Fair, Lesson Planning, and Recogniton Banquet.

Fair time is very important to the Homemakers and they have their own building on the fair grounds. Each member is asked to exhibit at least one item in the fair and some members enter 30 or more items. Members of the clubs help out at the fair in many ways such as entering exhibits, decorating the building, being judging assistants, and displaying items once they are judged.

Fair time is something that the Homemakers look forward too and enjoy every year!

All groups of animals are kept in individual pens which allows the public to view, pet and feed at their own discretion – no animals jumping up on the children. week at the fair What better way to enjoy the fair than camping right where all the action is? Wake up to the chickens crowing and the cattle mooing to get fed each morning. You might hear all of that if you wake early at the fair or if you choose to sleep and maybe you will hear that in your dreams. With all the fun that happens at the fair maybe it’s time that you just hook onto that camper and bring it to the fairgrounds. If you like to rough it just dig out the tent and camp for free. As the fairboard works to improve the grounds, the camping area is just another one of the great things to enjoy. The low price will be just like home which includes water and electrical. Each year we find more people that find how nice it is to bring their camper in and stay for the week. Most people that have camped in the past say it’s the only way to go! You enjoy the fair so much more with that chance to rest or just sit and visit with friends at your campsite then go back for more fair fun. With the addition of the new restroom a couple of years ago, showers were also added to that building for campers and 4-Hers to use. Rates are low from free if you wish to just pop that tent to a low $75 for the full week at the fair with full services. The fairboard will work with you if you wish to bring your unit in prior to the fair but you want to book your spot early. Some lucky person could be the recipient of $100 in Morris Chamber Cash if they can find the Stevens County Fair Medallion that has been hidden somewhere on the fairgrounds. A clue is given out each day of the fair starting with Wednesday, August 7th. Talking horse coming to town Are you ready for this? A four foot high, talking horse named Harold will be appearing at the Stevens County Fair on Aug. 8 and Aug. 9. In actuality, it is Homeward Bound Theatre Company presenting one of Alfy’s “World of Robotic Puppets“.

These fun-filled life-size puppets will be roaming the grounds of the Stevens County Fair, charming everyone from two to a hundred and two. Different puppet characters will be making their joyous appearance to unsuspecting visitors to the fair. Through the “magic” of radio control, these life-like puppets will be visiting and sharing jokes and quips with unsuspecting fair goers.

Alfy’s “World of Robotic Puppets” received praises across the United States with appearances in fairs from the Northern reaches of Minnesota to the southern boards of Arizona. They have also been featured at the Mall of America, St. Paul Saint’s Baseball, benefits, and numerous trade shows, and events for seniors and youth. Their version of an Irish leprechaun has been the hit of the various St. Patrick’s parades.

The Mary Hall Show “Nostalgic Enjoy Dirt Road Prophets on Friday night of the fair Novelty” The Mary Hall Show for Pipsqueeks will be appearing at the Stevens County Fair on Aug. 9 at 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. with her “Movin' n Groovin' Musical Experience!” There will be singing, dancing and a super fun interactive musical jamboree for kids and families with such songs as “Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor”, “Hokey Pokey” and “Purple People Eater.“ On Aug. 10 at 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Mary Hall will appear with her “Nostalgic Novelty Show.” Take a ride down memory lane with trivia and songs of days gone by. With guitar and vocals, Mary incorporates a wide variety of musical styles from the early days up to today's favorites. The audience is encouraged to join in or just listen Mary was just seven-years-old her when dad made arrangements for her and her sisters first singing performance! Many opportunities came along including appearing in concert with Frankie Avalon, Avery Schrieber, Rip Taylor, Hank Cochran as well as other notable artists.

With years of having one-on-one contact with people, and through personal experience, Mary has recognized the need for people to be encouraged in their lives. Through her musical programs for adults and children, she has found a way to do just that.

Encouraging, educating and entertaining are the strengths that make her valuable to young and old.

All three of these guys are accomplished musicians and bring their passion to a simple Bass, Drums, and Guitar instrumentation that when coupled with three lead vocalists and fantastic harmonies allow Dirt Road Prophets to rival four and even five piece bands. You will not believe there are only three people on stage!

After spending years playing in various bands and meeting each other at fill in gigs and jams, the stars finally aligned in November of 2011 when all three members found themselves between gigs and Dirt Road Prophets was formed.

Each member of Dirt Road Prophets has shared the stage with some of the biggest names in country music from Keith Urban, Montgomery Gentry, Little Big Town and Brad Paisley, to legends like Marty Stuart, The Bellamy Brothers, and Randy Travis.

Dirt Road Prophets have been there and done that. Now they are doing it their way. These guys take the stage with smiles on thier faces and truly enjoy bringing their blend of Country and Rock tunes wherever there are people willing to have a good time and get out on the dance floor! Appreciation Supper set for August 7 The Stevens County Fair Appreciation Supper is set for Wednesday, August 7th at 5:30 pm at the Lee Community Center.

The supper is free with the purchase of the $6.00 fair button. The supper includes barbeque pork and roast beef sandwiches courtesy of the Stevens County Pork Producers and the West Central Cattlemen. Also included in the meal will be baked beans, ice cream sandwiches, milk, chips, pop, and hotdogs for the kids. The supper is served by the Pork, Beef, and Dairy Producers, in addition to fairboard members and Morris Royalty. Entertainment will be the 2013 Kiwanis Talent Show winners. Other events are awarding the Century Farm award Farm Family of the Year award, and Emerging Farm Leaders of the Year award.

Buttons are on sale with most of the 4-Her’s, Fair Board Members, Unger’s, and Willie’s Super Valu. Buttons are $6.00 each with no limit on the number you can buy. There is, however, a limited supply of buttons, so you will want to get one soon.

The button is good for a free supper on Wednesday, August 7, at the Lee Community Center starting at 5:30 p.m. Our entertainment for this year’s supper will be participants from the Kiwanis’ Talent Show. At 6:10 p.m. we will have the drawing to see what lucky person will take a trip to Hawaii . All buttons have a number listed on the face of them and the holder of the button number drawn will have 24 hours to claim the trip. Last year’s fair trip winner was Nathanial Braaton of Morris.

Ophoven family blue-grass Minnesota Vintage Racing gospel band Association comes to Stevens T h e Ophoven Family, also known as Two By Four, is a bluegrass gospel band from northern Minnesota.

P a r e n t s Jerry and Molli play rhythm guitar, Kate (20) plays fiddle and banjo, John (17) plays bass, Aaron (15) plays banjo, dobro, and guitar, and Elizabeth (14) plays mandolin and fiddle.

The band has been playing together for 3 years and has played for festivals, concert halls, banquets, fairs, churches, and various other functions across the Midwest. Their new CD "Going Home" (released April 2011) follows their earlier releases "I Want to Be Ready" and "He Keeps Me Singing."

The Ophovens have a heart to encourage believers in their walk with the Lord and to present the gospel to those who have not put their trust in Christ as their Saviour. Using their instruments and voices, they harmonize and blend a variety of music including traditional bluegrass, bluegrass gospel, and a cappella hymns.

County Fair What better for the 140th Stevens County Fair than to bring back some of the old during the fair? Vintage Auto Racing will take place on the track on Saturday at 1 p.m. Come on out and see some of this vintage racing as the old timers take to the track. Most of the racers will be from out of the metro area and if you want to get involved on the track just check out their web site at http://minnesotavintageracingassociation.com The Minnesota Vintage Racing Association will be coming to the Stevens County Fair on Saturday, Aug. 10 and will put on a racing show to delight their fans. To be a considered vintage, vehicles must be 1976 or older models. The Association is a bunch of guys doing what they love; fixing up older cars and racing them.

They will race and do time trials from 1 to 2 p.m. and afterwards will come and park their cars between the Lee Center and the Horse barn so that fairgoers can get a good look at the cars and talk to the drivers. Be at the Grandstands - Saturday - 1 p.m. to see the vintage cars in action. Another FREE entertainment for you.

Triple B Rodeo performs on Friday of the fair

For over 25 years The Berends Family has traveled many miles not only producing rodeos, but also as competitors. In 1991 after successfully producing many open and high school rodeos Scott, Mike and their dad decided to incorporate Triple B Rodeo. Scott met Jill while competing in High School Rodeo and the couple married in 1991. In 2004 Jill and Scott purchased the company with a vision of taking the company to the next level. Currently, Triple B Rodeo produces some of the largest rodeos in the state.

Their son Casey is also carrying on the family tradition. Not only is Casey the flank man at the rodeos, he also competes in the bull riding. Like his dad, uncle and cousins, Casey has been fortunate to win the bull riding championship in multiple associations.

I guess you can say bull riding is in the Berends genes along with the love of rodeo.

One of the ultimate goals of a stock contractor is to have top notch bucking stock. Triple B prides itself on their bucking stock program which has produced many award winning bucking bulls

and horses. Their nephew, Chris Berends, owner of C-B Cattle Company along with Alvin and Carol Berends, provide the outstanding bulls you see at the events. Chris has done a great job raising some outstanding bulls and has made quite a name for himself. Jill and Scott take a lot of pride in their animals and make sure every animal is very well taken care of, so it can perform at its best. Some rough stock awards include 10X MRA Bareback Horse of the year, 8X MRA Saddle Bronc Horse of the year, and 9X MRA Bull of the year.

The company is very proud of their amazing staff. From their outstanding pick-up men, announcer, funnyman, and bullfighters, to their wonderful secretaries, and everyone behind the chutes.

They only hire the best personnel to make every rodeo performance one to remember. Some of the personal awards include; Scott, along with Mark Gunderson, voted 11X MRA Pick-up men of the year. Jill, along with their secretaries, voted in for the MRA finals the last seven years. In 2008, Scott was inducted into the MRA Hall of Fame and currently serves on the board of MRA directors.

Our committees are like family to us, we have been working with some of them for many years. We have been so fortunate to work with these committees. We feel a close relationship makes for a superior event. Triple B Rodeo along with their many of their committees has held the title of the MRA Rodeo of the year the last seven consecutive years.

The B.E.E.S 4-H Club Learns about the Environment activities to do all year long! The Stevens County Fair is always the highlight of the year; you can feel the excitement in the air! 4H Officers so many projects, there really is a perfect project for each member. At the fair, members explain their project to a judge, which is great practice at any age. Then there is the excitement of showing these projects to all their family and friends at the fair. We are very lucky to have several grandparents that come and help out during our shift at the 4-H Food Stand. It is just a good time for all! Join 4-H, there will be no regrets!

Sherwin Linton to perform at Stevens County Fair

Hi there! We are the B.E.E.S 4-H Club and we are from the Chokio Area. We have 12 families with a total of 24 kids. We have a great club! Our club project this year was “Exploring the Environment.� This was a very fun project for us; everyone loves to be outside! Some of the activities we did were going to the Fish & Wildlife Service, exploring at Lake Hattie, Judy Johnston spoke to us about the Stevens Soil & Water Conservation, we made pinecone feeders for the birds and we identified plaster animal tracks. During the Chokio Community Days, we help with the Prairie Pursuit marathon, have a bake sale and enter a float in the parade.

Sherwin has been at the Stevens County Fair a number of years. The great crowds that he brings to his shows is one of the reasons he is back in 2013 as the fairgoers love him. The shows are free and will be in the bandshell next to the food court on the grounds. Come on out on Sunday afternoon and enjoy one or more of their shows along with a lot of other free entertainment.

Join the Stampede 4-H Club The Stampede 4-H Club is one of the newest clubs in Stevens County. The club formed in 2005 with 22 members and currently has 20 members from 13 families. Stampede is a Project Club, meaning that the focus is on one of the many available projects in 4-H, and in this case, horses. Since the club began, they have been meeting monthly and sponsoring practices throughout the summer at the arenas at the fairgrounds. Stampede also sponsors clinics in Pleasure and Game events, bringing in clinicians from all over Minnesota. Horse enthusiasts from Stevens County and the surrounding counties have attended these clinics. Other activities Stampede has been involved in have been Blue Jean Fun Shows, tack/clothing swaps, and many charitable donations, including to Courage Cottage, West Wind Village, Toys for Tots, Salvation Army, Stevens County Food Shelf, Habitat for Humanity, Prairie Pioneer Days, Sanford’s Morris Dialysis Unit and the Relay for Life in Stevens County.

The Relay for Life is a labor of love for the club, as about $1,500.00 and $2,000.00 has been raised for the American Cancer Society in the past 2 years, respectively. The major fund raising activities have been dedicating the luminaries, acquiring donations and holding a Fun and Game night at the fairground’s arenas, called Ride for the Cure. The most touching points of that evening are when the opening address is given and when the luminaries are placed around the outside of the outdoor arena, the lights are turned off and the participants ride their horses, doing laps in silence, for those who’ve been lost to cancer, for survivors, for caregivers and for hopes of a cure for cancer. The Ride for the Cure began when several of our Stampede families were affected by cancer and it just seemed like the natural thing to do.

K-9 Unit at the fair Although they are simply four voices and a tambourine, Tonic Sol-fa has spent the past decade on the road carving their niche as the nation's top vocal group. In that time, this quartet has been named one of the top five "must-see" groups in America, has been awarded numerous original song and album awards in pop, gospel and holiday genres, appeared on NBC's Today Show and in the pages of Newsweek magazine. Outings with Jay Leno, Shawn Colvin, and Garrison Keillor have propelled album sales to more than 2,000,000 copies (mostly sold from the back of their trailer!) and have earned the group thousands of intensely loyal fans.

By 2000, the quartet was voted into the Midwest Music Hall of Fame. Graham Holtberg and his K-9 partner, Rico will make a return appearance at the Stevens County Fair. K-9 Rico is a German Shepherd and was born in Slovokia, a country in Central Europe. Rico is six-years-old and began as a Deputy with Stevens County in 2007. Rico was trained throughout the Twin Cities in the areas of apprehension, agility, obedience, tracking, handler protection, and narcotics detection.

Rico lives with Deputy Graham Holtberg and his family and enjoys playing outside and chewing on his �Kong� when he is off-duty. Come to the fair and see the fantastic demonstration that Graham and Rico put on.

They will be at the fairgrounds on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 10 and 11.

Visions in Logs - 3 days Swan Lake 4-H Club is a great place to be at the fair

The Visions in Logs wood carver returns to the Stevens County Fair Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Aug. 7, 8 and 9. Come on out and watch him carve the logs. Carvings will be available to purchase.

Swan Lake 4-H Club is a great place to be. We have lots of fun doing all kinds of things. We like to learn new things and help others along the way. We are a very active club. This year our club project is plant science. We have learned about flower identification, planning gardens, and plant propagation. Evelyn Lindstrom, a master gardener, came and presented lots of good information to our club. We take field trips too. We had a tour of Sweet Lily’s and the soils lab and learned about making maple syrup. We also are take part in many community service projects. This year we cleaned at SWELL, cleaned road ditches and planted flowers at SCMC, to name a few. We enjoy helping others.

We do many fun things. Our meetings always have a good meal and recreation. We like to do things together: like Share-the-Fun, putting together a club banner or club window. We like to do fun things like go to Glacial Lakes State Park and Casey’s. Whether working or playing, we have a good time.

Our members are in a variety of projects. Many kids take on animal projects like rabbits, dairy or beef. We have kids in nonlivestock projects too like photography, gardening, arts & crafts, and clothing. We are a well rounded bunch. It is great, because if you want to know about something, usually there is someone that can help you. If not, we work together to find out. Building character, learning and sharing, and growing strong are goals that we share. Want to have some fun, come join us!

4-H is fun for families Brodini returns Today, 4-H is the largest youth organization in the United States. 4-H has achieved this distinction by offering a wide variety of opportunities for families across the country. Electric Almighty returns Halls of Magic to the fair on Saturday

Electric Almighty is a professional cover band based in St. Cloud, featuring the brother-sister duo of Andy and Lora Schuster (of Alberta) on co-lead vocals. Electric Almighty performs a full range of songs from artists such as Sugarland, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Blake Shelton, Poison, Kings of Leon, Bon Jovi, ZZ Top, Lynryd Skynryd and many more. Amazing three part harmony vocals and outstanding musicianship is the well-known calling card of Electric Almighty. With such a wide ranging catalog of songs, the band is equally adept at playing both rock and country venues. His name is Kevin Hall and he is one of those unusual men that make people disappear, escape from handcuffs and saws people in half. Yes, you guessed it ... a mobster! Seriously, he is a professional magician who (with his wife Janet) performs across the country for all types of audiences.

Being a magician has given Kevin lots of rewards but his special joy is that of seeing a child’s face full of awe when something magical happens. Halls of Magic acts are a colorful mix of comedy, song, and magic that grabs people’s attention and leaves the audience wanting more. They also utilize audience participation.

Skilly & Duff Join us for a celebration of Irish songs and stories - gathered on their travels through Ireland and the Maritime Provinces of Canada. From rollicking, toe-tapping tunes to beautiful old ballads, hilarious novelty songs, along with traditional toasts, jokes and recitations, it's an evening to remember! Bring your friends and make it a party!

Skilly and Duff is a trio specializing in Irish traditional songs.

The group got together when Bruce Kelly of Elbow Lake and Mikko Cowdery of Osakis discovered their mutual love for old Irish songs, many of which they had both learned as children.

They soon added Annie O'Flynn on keyboards to round out the trio.

Skilly & Duff were the first place winners in the Irish music competition at the 2009 Irish Fair of Minnesota in St. Paul, and have been featured performers at fairs, festivals and pubs across

the region. Always entertaining, much of the Skilly & Duff material has been gleaned from the repertoire of actual Irish country pubs, and people who travel extensively in Ireland often comment that these shows are truly “like a trip to Ireland�.

So God made a farmer...

Here's the text of Paul Harvey's 1978 'So God Made a Farmer' Speech, which inspired the Ram Trucks’ Super Bowl ad that has resonated with so many Americans: “And on the 8th day, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, "I need a caretaker." So God made a farmer.

God said, "I need somebody willing to get up before dawn, milk cows, work all day in the fields, milk cows again, eat supper and then go to town and stay past midnight at a meeting of the school board." So God made a farmer.

"I need somebody with arms strong enough to rustle a calf and yet gentle enough to deliver his own grandchild. Somebody to call hogs, tame cantankerous machinery, come home hungry, have to wait lunch until his wife's done feeding visiting ladies and tell the ladies to be sure and come back real soon -- and mean it." So God made a farmer.

God said, "I need somebody willing to sit up all night with a newborn colt. And watch it die. Then dry his eyes and say, 'Maybe next year.' I need somebody who can shape an ax handle from a persimmon sprout, shoe a horse with a hunk of car tire, who can make harness out of haywire, feed sacks and shoe scraps. And

who, planting time and harvest season, will finish his forty-hour week by Tuesday noon, then, pain'n from 'tractor back,' put in another seventy-two hours." So God made a farmer.

God had to have somebody willing to ride the ruts at double speed to get the hay in ahead of the rain clouds and yet stop in mid-field and race to help when he sees the first smoke from a neighbor's place. So God made a farmer.

God said, "I need somebody strong enough to clear trees and heave bales, yet gentle enough to tame lambs and wean pigs and tend the pink-combed pullets, who will stop his mower for an hour to splint the broken leg of a meadow lark. It had to be somebody who'd plow deep and straight and not cut corners. Somebody to seed, weed, feed, breed and rake and disc and plow and plant and tie the fleece and strain the milk and replenish the self-feeder and finish a hard week's work with a five-mile drive to church.

"Somebody who'd bale a family together with the soft strong bonds of sharing, who would laugh and then sigh, and then reply, with smiling eyes, when his son says he wants to spend his life 'doing what dad does.'" So God made a farmer.”

4-H Animal Science: More than just showing a steer!

When we think of animal science projects, we tend to think of the steers, hogs, and sheep displayed at the county fair. But in reality, participating in a 4-H animal science project is much more than just a show at the fair. Animal science projects start as early as October with animal selection, chores and more. In addition, there are many opportunities of learning for animal science members throughout the year.

In Stevens County, we currently have Project Bowl teams in the general livestock and horse project areas. Participants begin learning about the project areas, touring local agricultural operations and practicing for the competition in December. Practice lessons are prepared and shared by 4-H volunteers. Volunteers also serve as the team coaches. In 2013, 18 youth participated in the General Livestock Competitions (4 teams) and 12 in the Horse Competitions (3 teams). The knowledge that the youth gain from this program is carried over into the knowledge they have for raising, exhibiting and marketing their livestock projects.

In the summer months, youth are encouraged to participate in the judging teams for the horse and general livestock project areas as well. Through this experience, youth learn quality traits of livestock and how to better select animals for their herd to increase profitability.

These are just a few of the many opportunities that are available to youth in the animal science project areas. Other opportunities include Livestock Quality Assurance and Ethics training, fitting and showing clinics, livestock interviews, and project talks at club meetings.

4-Hers spend much of the spring and summer working with and preparing their livestock projects for the County Fair. Once

at the fair, 4-Hers can be spotted cleaning pens, caring for their animals, preparing for the show and of course participating in the shows. Behind the scenes, all 4-Hers are required to participate in a livestock interview. Through the interview, they are able to share what they have learned about their project areas.

As we all know, the 4-Hers put a lot of work into their livestock exhibits at the fair. But their project learning extends far beyond that animal you see!

Island Band on Thursday Island Time Steel Drum Band has been performing since the mid ‘90s.

Their vast repertoire includes trop-rock selections by Jimmy Buffett, Harry Belefonte, etc., along with beach music and oldies by The Beach Boys, Frankie Valli, Manfred Mann, etc., and contemporary tunes by Zac Brown, Sting, Kenny Chesney, and others.

These professional musicians know how to read the crowd and will keep any age audience entertained. Come and enjoy the Island Time Steel Drum Band on Thursday, Aug. 8 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Bandshell at the Stevens County Fair.

4-H intern a Princess Kay finalist

By K a t e l y n B l a ck we l d e r Stevens County 4-H Summer Intern Most Minnesotans have heard about or seen the butterheads that are carved at the Minnesota State Fair every year. This year, one of those butterheads will belong to a former Stevens County 4-Her. I am Katelyn Blackwelder, the Stevens County 4-H Summer Intern, as well as a finalist for the 2013 Princess Kay of the Milky Way title. I grew up on my family’s dairy farm in rural Chokio, where we milk 300 cows and grow corn, wheat, alfalfa and soybeans on 1,750 acres. I have served as the Dairy Princess in Big Stone County for three years. I credit showing dairy cattle in Stevens County 4-H to developing my interest in cows and the dairy industry. This interest, as well as the pride I take in the hard work my family does, has led me to be one of 12 candidates for Princess Kay, which has been a goal of mine since I was in 4th grade.

Princess Kay of the Milky Way is celebrating its 60th year in 2013. This title was selected in 1954 from over 10,000 entries in a contest held to name the Minnesota Dairy Princess. Besides getting her likeness carved into a 90 pound block of butter, Princess Kay serves as the ambassador for the dairy industry during her year long term. Princess Kay makes public appearances around the state to help consumers

make a connection with Minnesota’s dairy farmers, including high school and elementary classrooms.

The butterheads of each of the 12 finalists have been carved since 1965, and have been carved by Linda Christensen for 41 years.

The carving takes about six hours for each butterhead, which is done in a rotating cooler in the Dairy Building on the state fair grounds. It is displayed for the duration of the fair and goes home with the Princess and finalists after the fair.

When visiting the Minnesota State Fair this year, I hope you check out the Dairy Building, see my butterhead among the 12, and enjoy a healthy snack from the Dairy Goodness Bar. Also, feel free to contact me if you would like me to present in your classroom, or at another local event.
