Get Your Buttons now The right number wins a trip and MORE! Someone could be the lucky winner of a trip for two to San Diego, California if you have the correct fair button number.

Buttons are on sale with most of the 4-Her’s, Unger’s Furniture, Meadowland Market LLC, and Willie’s Super Valu. Buttons are $7 each with no limit on the number you can buy.

There is a limited supply of buttons, so you will want to get one soon.

The Button is good for a free supper on Tuesday night, August 9, at the Lee Community Center starting at 5 p.m. At 6:10 p.m. we will have the drawing to see what lucky person will take a trip to San Diego, CA. All buttons have a number listed on the face of them and the holder of the button number drawn will have 24 hours to claim the trip. Last year’s fair trip winner was Marlene and Paul Haugen.

Each day of the fair, more numbers are drawn for prizes such as Morris Chamber Cash, cases of pop, gift certificates to different businesses, T shirts, etc. Always have your button on as you never now when there may be surprise drawing at an event at the fair plus you will need your button to claim the prize.

We will make an effort to have all numbers for the prizes drawn by noon on Saturday and posted at that time. You should

have time to check and see if you have won anything by the close of the fair on Sunday.

The winning numbers are posted on the fair’s website at www.scfair.net Facebook or in the glass case that is located on the outside of the Homemaker’s Building (yellow). Once again, the owner of the number drawn for the trip will only have 24 hours to claim it or we will post a new number for that prize and the first number will be void.

The Stevens County Fair Appreciation Supper is set for Tuesday, August 9 at 5 p.m. at the Lee Community Center. The supper is free with the purchase of the $7.00 fair button. The supper includes barbeque pork and roast beef sandwiches courtesy of the Stevens County Pork Producers and the West Central Cattlemen’s Association.

Stevens County Homemakers

The Stevens County Homemakers consist of 8 clubs with 79 members.

The homemakers take turns meeting in members’ homes once a month, fall through spring. Some clubs meet during the summer. Each club sends one or two of their members to the lesson planning for each month. The lessons held in the last year were Resources for Our Aging Population, What Honey Bees Do for Us and How to Help Them, Gluten Free Cooking Recipes, Fair, Gardening, Child Car Seat Safety and Rag Quilts.

The Stevens County Homemakers has a board called the Home Council.

Each club has a counselor and a cocounselor. The counselor sits on the Home Council and the Home Council makes decisions for all the clubs. If the Counselor can’t attend a meeting, then the Co-counselor usually attends. The Home Council meets in November, April, and July. The counselor and co-counselor each are expected to join a committee. These committees are County Fair, Lesson Planning, and Recognition Banquet.

Fair time is a fun time for

Homemakers and they have their own building on the fair grounds. Stevens County is the only county in the state where the Homemakers have their own building. Other counties share their building with other organizations.

Each member of Homemakers is asked to exhibit at least one item in the fair and some members enter 30 or more items. The Stevens County Homemaker

clubs had total of 1073 entries in 2015.

Members of the clubs help out at the fair in many ways such as entering exhibits, decorating the building, being judging assistants, and displaying items once they are judged. Fair time is something that the Homemakers look forward to every year!

TONIC SOL FA You have heard it correct, we just made the fair a day longer starting on Tuesday. Many things have brought on this change and this will move the Annual Community Fair Suppoer from Wednesday night to Tuesday August 9. That is the night we hope to find out who will win the trip for two to San Dieg, California this year. Making this change gives more time for setup for booths that only had hours to be setup in the past for the Lee Center Commerical Booths. With all the things going on during the fair help is always short and this will really help with setup.

This year Tuesday night will also have a Great Grandstand Show.

Carnival Rides at the Fair Family Fun Shows will be the featured Carnival for even more fun at the fair. Family Fun Shows is a Minnesota based Carnival that puts lots of effort to make this a fun event for you every year. They have been at the Stevens County Fair for many years and are about the only one out there that still stays with the one ticket per ride any age. When many oth-

er carnivals use the coupon system to make it look like the rides are cheaper, you find that it takes up to 5 coupons for rides, which makes the price very high. Family Fun Shows give you one ticket at a low set price and a great ride. It costs them about the same if rides run full or empty and you will only spend so much money so it only makes sense to give you what

you pay for and enjoy it at the same time. Like always we say your best and lowest cost for a ride is to buy the advance ride tickets. You can find them at any of the local banks and supermarkets in the area. They are on sale until mid-day on Thursday, August 11 when the Carnival starts.

STEVENS COUNTY FAIR RULES AND REGULATIONS: 1. The Stevens County Fair reserves the fi nal and absolute right to interpret these terms, rules, and regulations and arbitrarily settle and determine all matters, questions, and differences in regards thereto, or other- wise arising out of, connected with or incident to the Stevens County Fair. The Superintendents of their area shall be the final arbitrator of any disputes involving exhibitors and day to day activities. The Stevens County Executive Board backs the Superintendent 100 percent.

2. The Agricultural Society reserves the right to amend or add to these rules as in its judgment may deem advisable.

3. The Stevens County Agricultural Society wishes to promote a wholesome and educational event for the entire family. All exhibits and displays are subject to review by the Agricultural Society. Any items or material deemed as inappropriate for display must be removed by exhibitor upon request by fair officials. The following items are included in the above ban: Weapons (death stars, butterfly knives); Sexually explicit/pornographic material; and vulgar/profane materials. Exhibits and displays are meant to be enjoyed by all fairgoers. Please help us make the fair a pleasant experience for people of all ages.

4. NO DOGS OR OTHER PETS ALLOWED on the fairgrounds. These are exceptions: •Certified service animals or secured animals in training.

•Dogs or other pets may be allowed when part of an exhibition or demonstration authorized by the Ag Society.

•Carnival owner/operators, Camping – dogs must be housed during fair hours.

5. No unapproved sale or giveaway of livestock or other animals is allowed on the fairgrounds.

6. Vehicles, golf carts, 4-wheelers, gators and the like which are for the express use of fair personnel during fair time (week) are only to be driven

by Stevens County Fair personnel designated to use such units. Underage members of fairboard members, families, are not permitted to operate these units.

7. Use of motorized vehicles on fairgrounds during fair week…limited only to golf carts, 4-wheelers, gators and

the like which are in use by the Stevens County Fairboard, EMS, or Security staff will be permitted during fair week.

ALL OTHER PRIVATE UNITS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED ON THE FAIRGROUNDS! Insurance coverage will NOT allow private units on the grounds.

8. Bicycles,skateboards, skates, hover boards will NOT be allowed on the Stevens County Fairgrounds during fair week.

9. For Informational Purposes Only: Accidents or injury reporting is required if you are injured at the Stevens County Fair. Please report to the Information Booth located on the midway across from the Grandstands entrance.

10. If anyone has issues or disagreements with how things are run in a building or on the Stevens County Fairgrounds over-all, the Stevens County Fairboard reserves the rights to ask said person(s) to leave or remove them from the fairgrounds.

11. Any person or group that conducts a protest action must limit its activity to 10 am to 7 pm in the location designated by the Stevens County Fair Board. The designated location is the southeast corner of the bunker, which is in the southern parking lot on fairground property. No entrances or exits can be obstructed or limited in any way.

12. Smoking and E-cigarettes are not allowed in any building or rides on the fairgrounds or within 50 feet of any building doorway. Designated smoking areas are posted where allowed.

STEVENS COUNTY FAIR 2016 OPEN CLASS EXHIBITS ENTRY TIMES Open Class Exhibit Building Wednesday, August 10: 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Individuals with more than 20 exhibits must come before 2 p.m. on Wednesday OPEN CLASS EXHIBITS Rules and Regulations Pre-Registration: Pre-registration is encouraged, but not necessary to enter items in Open Class. If you have preregistered, we will have your lot tags and entry sheet ready for you when you arrive at the Open Class building.

Changes may still be made to your

entry list once you have arrived, so do not be concerned if you are not able to bring an item or if you want to bring an additional item. You may pre-register on-line: info@scfair.net Cut off date/ time for pre-entry is Tuesday, August 9th at 6:00 pm.

13. Adult entries for premiums must be made by residents of Stevens County or adjoining counties only. Limit 200 entries per exhibitor..

14. Exhibits must be grown, made or owned by the exhibitor.

15. One exhibit per person will be allowed in each lot and one exhibit cannot be entered to compete in more than one division or 4-H. 16. All exhibits except livestock must NOT have been previously exhibited at the Stevens County Fair.

17. Exhibits must be entered correctly, ticketed properly and ready to be judged when entered, in order to be judged and pre- miums awarded. The responsibility of determining the proper classification shall rest on the exhibitor.

18. The Agricultural Society will take every precaution for the preservation of the articles and stock on exhibition but will not be responsible for any loss or damage that may occur in the delivery, exhibition or removal of exhibits.

19. Exhibits left after fair. Any person, corporation or club owning any property left on the grounds after the close of the Fair without having approval of the Fair Board to leave the same, shall forfeit the same to the Ag Society for disposal.

AWARDS 1. The awards in open class entries will be designated by ribbons, stickers or cards as follows: 1st Premium, Blue; 2nd, Red; 3rd, White.

2. Grand Champion ribbons will be awarded to exhibits of exceptional merit. There will be no monetary prize connected with this ribbon.

3. Premiums will not be awarded unless the judge deems the exhibit worthy.

4. Any interference by exhibitors to influence or dictate the decision of the judges shall be sufficient cause for excluding his or her entry from competition and may have exhibition privileges revoked in future county fairs.

RELEASE OF EXHIBITS 1. All exhibits must remain on exhibit until 8:30 p.m. Sunday, August 14 except

livestock will follow the established release times. There will be no exceptions to this rule. Premiums will be forfeited if articles are removed before 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

2. Exhibits will be released and premium checks awarded from 8:30-9:30 p.m. at the Open Class Exhibit Building on Sunday of the fair.

CLAIMS Persons having claims against the Stevens County Agricultural Society must present them in writing to the secretary within fifteen days after the last day of the fair.

H & H Veterinary Service has been accepted as official veterinarians for the fair.

Exhibition of Livestock and Poultry in Minnesota—Summary of State Rule GENERAL REQUIREMENTS Livestock and poultry that exhibit symptoms of any infectious or communicable disease, including ringworm and warts, may not be exhibited. All animals must be examined by the official veterinarian on the day they are admitted to the exhibition and at least once daily during the exhibition.

The Official Veterinarian may order the immediate removal to a quarantine facility or removal from the exhibition premises of any livestock with symptoms of infectious or communicable diseases.

Animals placed in a quarantine facility must remain there until removed from the exhibition premises. They may not enter a show ring. This includes livestock with warts or ringworm.

All testing must be conducted prior to the exhibition, and a record of the test results on a test chart or Intrastate Health Certificate must accompany the tested animals. Livestock and poultry entered in a petting exhibit are not exempt from the exhibition rules if the animals are from more than one farm or there are other animals at the exhibit.

The official veterinarian may request and be permitted to test any animal appearing sick and has the right to test dead animals. Owners are responsible for removal cost of dead animals after released by the Fair Veterinarian.

Health certificates must list the Minnesota Exhibition as consignee, and will be accepted if examination and tests are conducted within 90 days prior to the exhibition except swine pseudorabies test must be made within 30 days prior to the exhibition. The differential pseudorabies tests are not approved for exhibition.

Requirements for horses and dogs are the same as for those originating from Minnesota.

VEGETABLES: Judged on quality and uniformity rather than size. Vegetables are not to be washed, but should be polished with a clean cloth. Tops on root vegetables should not be cut completely off; leave about 1 1/2 inches. Trim roots. Stems are to be left on vegetable and fruit, except tomatoes. Leave a few outer leaves on cabbage.

HORSES All horses must be negative to an official test for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) within 12 months prior to the opening date of the exhibition.

A test is not required for suckling foals accompanying a negative dam.

SLAUGHTER CLASSES All livestock and poultry entered in the class which are kept isolated in a separate building from all other livestock and poultry at the exhibition and which are slaughtered during or immediately fol lowing the exhibition do not need tests or individual identification.

DOGS Dogs over 6 months of age must be accompanied by a current Certificate of Rabies Vaccination issued by a Licensed Veterinarian.

Requirements for Livestock and Poultry Originating from States Other than Minnesota: Livestock and poultry originating from states other than Minnesota must meet the Minnesota Importation requirements in addition to the requirements outlined in this summary.

•All imported animals must be accompanied by a certificate of veterinary inspection.

•Ruminants originating from Michigan may not be imported into Minnesota for exhibition.

FLOWERS: •All plants and flowers must be grown by the exhibitor.

•Specimen exhibits will be judged for quality of form, color, size, foliage, and condition.

(No buds or excess foliage) •Specimen exhibits will be placed in white vases provided by the fair. No other container will be accepted or necessary.

•Enter three blooms per specimen unless otherwise specified.

•Arrangements will be judged for flower quality, design and suitability.

The container wil be considered part of the exhibit.

•Plants which are flowering plants must be shown in bloom.

Specimens: FOR BEST DISPLAY •Cut early in the morning or afternoon.

•Use sharp knife, cut of slant.

•Place immediately in warm water.

•Remove all foliage below waterline.

•Let flowers stand in a cool dry place out of drafts for 12-14 hrs.

•Stems with sticky sap should be singed on cut edge or sealed by placing lower end of stem in boiling water for 1-2 minutes.

•Woody stems should be crushed to

increase water.

CANNING: •Exhibits must be in standard pint, quart, or half pint jars, unless otherwise specified, with new lids and rings.

•Jars must be manufactured for canning.

•All foods must be processed according to the Extension Service of Minnesota. A boiling water bath is used for processing jam and jellies, fruit, tomatoes, and pickles, and a pressure canner must be used for low acid vegetables and meat.

Your processing time must be written on lid or label.

•Jams and jellies must be sealed using a 2-piece lid. Paraffi n seals are not allowed.

•All jars must be marked with the current year on the lid to ensure against entry of same jar in the fair next year.

CAKES: Enter a 4” square piece of unfrosted cake, made from scratch, on a 6” paper plate, wrapped in a see through plastic bag with twister or self-sealing plastic bag.

COOKIES: Enter 3 cookies on a 6” paper plate, wrapped in a see through plastic baf with twister or self-sealing plastic bag.

BARS: Enter 2-2” squares on a 6” paper plate, wrapped in a see through plastic bag with twister or self-sealing plastic bag.

ABOUT MITCH GOUDY AND DIANA UPTON-HILL MITCH GOUDY Born and raised in rural Bloomfield, Iowa, Mitch Goudy faced a personal crisis early in his life when a knee injury permanently limited his ability to play sports. To help him get through this difficult transition, his father bought him a guitar, put it in his hands and said, “Let’s see what you can do.”

That moment changed Goudy’s life.

Inspired by a wide range of artists that included Garth Brooks, Eric Church, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Seger and James Taylor, he honed his performing skills to the point that he could release a debut single, “Blow These Speakers Out,” (written by Goudy and Justin Hill) in the fall of 2013.

Since then, Goudy has filled his calendar with performance dates, shared stages with Rodney Atkins, Joe Nichols and The Oak Ridge Boys, and released another single, “Ain’t My Fault” (Goudy, Hill and Diana Upton-Hill). His first album, Rowdie, produced by Goudy and Hill, will release in October on Third Floor Records.

Just 19 years old, Goudy expressed something close to wonder in the days leading up to his first CMA Music

Festival in 2014: “I cannot wait! I grew up reading and seeing the artists that take part in this festival and now I’m going to be one of them! I’m ready to meet every Country fan, sign autographs in my own booth and just take it all in.”

DIANA UPTON-HILL Diana Upton-Hill is a nationally recognized recording and touring artist.

At the age of 3, Diana began singing with her dad’s band and performing solos for school and church concerts. Now a versatile performer, she has become a national talent; active in the regional country/folk music scene, performing on television, joining symphony orchestras as featured soloist, and even starring in live theatre productions. Her favorite roles include: Belle in Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella in Into the Woods and Ellen in Miss Saigon.

She has numerous recordings to her credit and regularly finds herself contributing to commercial jingles and voice-overs. You may have even seen her on tour this past year with rising Country star, Mitch Goudy, with whom she’s written several songs and for whom she regularly provides background vocals.

Info Booth at the Fair When you are at the fair stop at the Information Booth which is located between the Grandstand and the 4-H Exhibit Building.

The Information Booth is a great stop to find out what is going on at the fair. The booth is manned by fairboard members and volunteers during the fair. The Red Booth made its first appearance at the fair last year and is sponsored by the Morris Coop. You may have seen the booth on the move at local parades or at Morris Coop Events. The booth also offers much more besides information or lost and found. You can purchase fair souvenir items like T-shirts and jackets plus tickets for events. You might even get that chance to receive a freebie of the day at the booth. Stop with the kids and say Hi as they may might be able to pick up a free coloring book when available.

what you see for Free at the Stevens County Fair you pay to see at other fairs. First we are a Free Gate – Free Parking Fair. What does this mean? If you have been here before you already know we do not charge to park your car or come onto the grounds. That means no entry fee to come onto the grounds and check things out. Throughout the fair there are many things that go on during the day that you will see for free. They’re great shows and acts! Some you may have seen at the MN State Fair. This year check out the Medicine Shows which are old time acts from the 1800s. They will be setting up camp along with putting on shows during the fair. Stop and see how they cooked and did things back in the 1800s. This year we have brought in the Marvelous Mutts. They are rescue dogs that will perform free stunt shows daily at the fair. Alfi’s will return to the fair again. He is a moving puppet and kids love him. Magic acts return daily and new this year, check out the hypnotist show that will take place in the livestock judging arena Saturday night.

Free Music is big at the fair and this year will be no exception! We have many great entertainment with some having songs in the top 50 on the country charts. This year we will have Nashville recording artist “Mitch Goudy”and “Diana Upton Hill” performing on the Free Stage # 3 on Thursday and Friday Nights of the fair. These are performers you will not want to miss during the fair. We will have many more perfomers like Sherwin Linton, Fleming Fold, Skewed View, Strange Daze and Them Pesky Kids just to name a

Camping at the Fair Many years ago the fair started its campground and as fairgoers have found out there is nothing better than bringing your camper for the week to the fair. Even if you are working during fair week it gives you that extra great time at the fair. You will want to go online to the fair website and fill out the form and mail it in as space fills up by fair time. At the low rate of just $75 for the week, this is a great buy as most campgrounds charge way more for a weeks stay. Along with the water and electrical in your camping spot, campers are offered a free shower location for your use while on the grounds. Dogs are allowed in the campgrounds if they are kept on a leash and obey all dog rules. This is the only place on the fairground that dogs are allowed. Fair Campers have said that camping is the best.

Dr. Silas McFee’s Magical Medicine Show Here are the cast members for the show that will be held in the Steven’s County Fair.

Dr. Silas McFee’s Magical Medicine Show Dr. Silas McFee’s Magical Medicine Show was founded in 2013 by a group of experienced reenactors who wanted to introduce a broader range of creative and historical material to their repertoire. They believe strongly that reenactment should be well researched and accurate, but it should also be approachable, entertaining, and fun!

The Medicine Show is staffed entirely of volunteers.

Fairgoers should come to the north end of the fairgrounds to learn about past history and be entertained.

The Flemming Fold is is an exciting and versatile family music group from Southern Minnesota. They perform a wide variety of high-energy, toe-tapping music blending Bluegrass, Country, Oldtime, Gospel... and Alpine folk music with yodeling. This dynamic, tight-knit family group consists of songwriting duo, Troy and Sandra Flemming, and their two talented daughters.

Troy, aka “The Yodelmeister,” yodels with such beauty and intensity that listeners regularly assume he is from Austria or Germany. Troy is also known for his outstanding finger-style guitar playing. Sandra is an accomplished singer/songwriter and a lively piano accordionist. Their 14 year-old daughter plays both mandolin and fiddle and sings, while her 12 year-old sister sings and plays the upright bass. Audiences are continually amazed at the level of poise and professionalism that these young sisters display while entertaining. Although Troy’s energetic, soaring yodels cause quite a sensation whenever he performs, he is often upstaged by his daughters with their youthful charm, mastery of their instruments, and beautiful vocal harmonies!

Aside from their wonderful music, Troy, Sandra, and the girls enjoy the art of entertaining and making a strong connection with their audiences. For them, a performance is a great success when everyone has had a good laugh, and shed a tear. This multi-talented family has been featured on the radio and national television several times, has performed in more than 1000 concerts to date, and has fans all around the world.

Check out the Ag Cab Lab You may have seen it at the State Fair and this year it’s right here at the Stevens County Fair. The Ag Cab Lab is an interactive and engaging exhibit that allows kids of all ages and even adults to hop in a combine or tractor cab. Inside the tractor are simulated games they can choose from that range from planting soybeans to cultivating a field. At this time we are not sure which unit will show up at the fair but the combine cab allows children to harvest corn both during the day and during the night. The Ag Cab Lab gives kids and adults a hands-on and upfront look at farming.

The unit will be located in the Lee Center Commercial Building Thursday to Sunday and sponsored by Minnwest Finance Inc.; Town & County Supply; Conway, Deuth & Schmiesing and CHS New Horizons.

Options for Women

The babies are being selected and are securing a sponsoring business. The babies and their sponsors will be featured in the Morris Sun Tribune a week or two before the fair. Choose your Adorable Baby and stop at that business and at the Stevens County Fair to give a donation towards that baby. Or mail your donation and the name of the baby you selected to 712 Atlantic Ave. Suite 5, Morris.

The baby with the most donations is the winner. First, second and third places will be awarded. Winners will be announced at the close of the fair.

The Center is a non-profit organization that operates through private donations and fundraisers. The money raised from this fundraiser will provide practical assistance and compassionate care for women and their families. Our mission is to minister to the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of our clients, including pregnant women, their unborn children, their families and friends. The Center is located at 712 Atlantic Ave., Suite 5, Morris.

Thank a Farmer Traveli ng across the country and living out of suitcases and hotel rooms, 6-8 months out of the year isn’t easy but there is a reason.

That reason is to try and gain respect for some of the most important people in our lives...the farmer. I discovered

that reason by hearing about farm kids being looked down upon and teased by their classmates. That is when Thank A Farmer was born.

When I looked at how the importance of a farmers was taught to kids I knew something had to be done that better engaged them. I created a magic show around products kids use everyday and then connected it back to the farmer

and the farm. Of course, once they know what comes from the farm, they “Thank A Farmer” to get the magic to work. It’s a fun way to educate and they learn without even realizing it.

We also created books, “Fun Farm Facts to Fool Your Family & Other Fine Folks” that are written for the reader to now become the teacher. The books have been used across the country by Ag folks who are presenting their own Ag programs to kids and need some fun engaging facts.

Thank A Farmer took what was a negative situation and created positive learning experiences. Our goal is to reach even more children Nationwide with Thank A Farmer programs.
