WELCOME!
he GWSR has gone through difficult times over the past couple of years. But after the silence of Covid lockdowns, this event proves that the line has bounced back in style. It’s a celebration in more ways than one. Not only does it showcase what our wonderful volunteer-run railway can achieve in putting on a spectacular show; it also underlines that despite the difficulties of Covid, the engineering challenges of cutting and embankment slips, track replacement and bridge repairs – to say nothing of a national shortage of coal – the railway is in good spirits and in good shape. There are many railways in the UK that with the benefit of hindsight should never have been closed. The route on which the GWSR operates today is perhaps one but, had it not been closed by BR and revived thanks to the vision and determination of our founders, I wouldn’t be writing these words today. Another line that perhaps was a shortsighted victim of the Beeching cuts and is much missed, not least by the communities it served, is the Somerset & Dorset between Bath and Bournemouth.
This weekend we are thinking of the Mendips rather than the Cotswolds and recalling the days of steam over this challenging route with visiting locomotives that once worked over that line. Coupled with our home fleet we have nine locomotives in steam (subject of course to availability). Now that really is something to celebrate and I would like to record my heartfelt thanks to the gala team and every volunteer who has enabled the curtain to be raised once again on the GWSR’s most spectacular annual event. A warm welcome to you all. Richard Johnson –

Class 9F 2-10-0 No. 92203 was once a resident on the GWSR as well as, in BR days, a resident of Bath Green Park. Here the locomotive is in ‘dirtied’ condition during the Cotswold Festival of Steam on May 28, 2008, with a loaded ballast train at Winchcombe.

A WORD FROM OUR SPONSOR
fter a long break which saw no gala events for two years on Britain’s heritage railways, it is a real joy to see the movement bouncing back so vigorously. Mortons – publisher of Heritage Railway and The Railway Magazine, as well as Rail Express, Railways Illustrated and Steam Days (plus many other oneoff titles and books) – was looking forward to the 2020 Cotswold Festival of Steam before it, of course, was nipped in the Covid bud. As Mortons’ publisher, it gives me huge pleasure to see the ‘Somerset & Dorset Remembered’ going ahead this year with a truly wonderful line-up of locomotives redolent of the lamented railway that once ran over the Mendips between Bath and Bournemouth. It is great to see the movement bouncing back and for us to be able to sponsor this informative guide to what’s happening over an action-packed weekend. It is a particular pleasure to see 9F 2-10-0 No. 92203 Black Prince returning to its one-time home at a time when the engine was owned by

the late artist David Shepherd. This is its first visit away from its present base on the North Norfolk Railway. The visit has particular poignancy given that Avril, David’s wife, passed away recently – truly the end of an astonishing era. David and Avril founded the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation and the immense contribution they have made for wildlife conservation, for art – particularly encouraging young wildlife artists, and, of course, for the heritage railway movement is immeasurable. Their passing is a keenly felt loss. I do hope you enjoy your visit to this wonderful railway and perhaps reflect on the passing of the lamented ‘S & D’. To read more about so many of our wonderful railways, and to get a special offer on our array or railway titles which cover all interests and genres, see page 2 of this guide… we look forward to welcoming you into our growing railway family. CELEBRATING THE SOMERSET AND DORSET RAILWAY
M
aybe there are similarities between the Cotswolds and the Mendips but this weekend, the former Somerset & Dorset Railway comes to the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway, skirting the Cotswold escarpment between Broadway and Cheltenham Racecourse. The former Somerset & Dorset Railway was a spectacular route much loved by photographers of the time, such as Mike Esau and of course Ivo Peters – who often parked his now-famous Mk 6 Bentley (which thanks to present owner Julian Birley, is visiting for the event) in such a way that it appeared in many of his images of the railway. The Somerset & Dorset has rightly passed into the stuff of legend with its challenging route between Bath and Bournemouth; its most famous service being the ‘Pines Express’ between Manchester and Bournemouth West. First opening in 1862, The Somerset & Dorset Railway Company, with its distinctive blue-liveried locomotives, was taken over at the 1923 Grouping by the LMS. From nationalisation in 1948, SR types such as the West Country class became commonplace with former S&D

and LMS 2-8-0s, 4-4-0s and shunting locomotives, including four-wheel Sentinel vertical boiler locomotives at Radstock. In later years Standard classes appeared, particularly the 9F 2-10-0s which proved ideal for the switchback nature of the route and were often in charge of the ‘Pines Express’. Despite the high volume of traffic over the route, it was closed as part of the Beeching cuts: the axe falling on March 7, 1966. This event pays homage to the former S & D with four of the five visiting locomotives reflecting the motive power that was once common in the Mendips, indeed two of our visiting engines called the Somerset and Dorset route ‘home’ for many years, and full details of the locomotives appearing can be found later on in this guide.

WHAT’S GOING ON? Station to station guide BROADWAY
It is worth spending time here and admiring the result of years of work done entirely by volunteers. The result is an award-winning station building that looks as if it has always been there – in fact, the original was demolished in 1963 after local trains services ceased in 1960. The new station was formally opened on Good Friday, 2018. The footbridge is open for viewing from the top (unfortunately platform 2 is not finished so there is no access to there). The footbridge span came from Henley-in-Arden and the steps are new. Note the canopy that now extends from the building to the footbridge, just as did the original – this was completed during the railway’s winter shutdown. The building is full of original and delightful detail – special moulded bricks, the counterbalanced canopy of all-riveted construction, period notices... the list goes on. The refreshment room will of course be open. The predominantly-GWR demonstration goods train will be visiting on Friday and Sunday – behind GWR 2-8-0T 4270, this will be the first visit of a heritage goods train to this recreated GWR station in the preservation era.
The newly-completed volunteer-built canopy extension and footbridge steps at Broadway station – faithful to the original. (Jo Roesen)
The new extension to the former goods shed at Toddington now houses the railway’s mess room, showers and changing facilities, medical centre and meeting rooms.
Coaling of locomotives is in full public view at Toddington station: the railway has good coal stocks.

TODDINGTON
This is the engineering headquarters of the railway with the steam and diesel depots, machine shops and of course the new welfare building: Called The Goods Shed because it is an extension to the original Great Western goods shed. In the car park will be a marquee with trade and preservation society stands, while further stands can be found in the David Page steam shed – a rare opportunity to take a look ‘behind the scenes’ at the ongoing restorations. On the opposite side of the car park to the main line you can find the Toddington Narrow Gauge Railway – a trip over the short line and visit to their sheds is time well spent (travel is free to event ticket holders).

The Flag & Whistle is open for light refreshments as well as meals, while their popular BBQ will also be offering some tasty options. You might even see traction engines here! This is where to book your ticket for a brake van ride to Broadway and Cheltenham – first come, first served! The cost is only a tenner for event ticket holders.
HAYLES ABBEY
This rather lovely GWR halt is a completely new re-creation on the site of the original, which was opened in 1928 to serve the then newly-opened museum at the nearby ruined Cistercian Hailes Abbey (yes the GWR name is a misspelling!). It has a short platform and a primitive corrugated iron shelter exactly as the original. The ‘local’ service (coloured green on the timetable) calls here during the event, the train hauled predominantly by BR-built Ivatt 2-6-2T No. 41312. It is a good place to while away an hour or so watching and photographing passing trains. Make sure you are in the front two coaches behind the locomotive if you alight here as the platform is very short, even though it is a little longer than the original!
WINCHCOMBE
A hive of activity during the event. Not only do trains ‘cross’ here, the 4wvb Sentinel No. 7109 Joyce is fussing about the station between trains with a couple of wagons. There’s plenty of opportunity to take a good look at this unusual locomotive – a type that for many years frequented the yard and station environs at Radstock and its collieries on the S & D. Not to be missed is our first departure of each day at 08:45 when Joyce will make its sedate journey from Toddington to Winchcombe with the local train, before handing over to 41312. Take the opportunity to explore the Carriage & Wagon Works where miracles large and small are performed on our exquisite carriage restorations and the wagons that make up our demonstration goods trains, all ably overhauled, restored and

maintained by our dedicated teams of volunteers. If you fancy a pint then this is the place as local brewer Goffs will be offering its fine ales, while refreshments are available from the Coffee Pot café and the volunteer catering team’s famous griddle will be in full swing. If you brought your own picnic then settle on the grass to enjoy passing trains – on a sunny day, it’s a joy.

Bryan and Savita have once again thrown their doors open for visitors and their excellent home-made refreshments will be available. To work off that slice of cake, try your hand on the pump trolley along the private siding – and take time to admire the couple’s awardwinning ‘Gotherington West’ traditional Pagoda timber-platform halt. This is another great place to watch trains as services cross in the loop just south of the station. If you are getting off the train here make sure you are in the first two coaches behind the locomotive as the platform is very short.
CHELTENHAM
This may be the beginning and the end of your visit to the S & D Remembered event. There will be refreshments available here and while locomotives are laying over between services, it’s an opportunity to visit the footplate. This station has extremely long platforms because it was opened in 1912 specifically to serve the nearby national hunt racecourse. It was open only on race days with trains comprising up to 14 coaches from London, the Midlands and elsewhere calling here. The GWSR once again provides special trains on certain race days. This is also the place to book a trip on the brake van of the freight to Toddington – a bargain at just a tenner!

WHAT ELSE IS GOING ON? GENTLY BENTLEY
As mentioned elsewhere, celebrated photographer Ivo Peters captured hundreds of images on the S & D, often with his Mark 6 Bentley included in the shot. That car is now owned by Julian Birley, former chairman of the North Norfolk Railway and now chairman of the Bala Lake Railway, and Julian has brought the car for the event. You might well find it at any of the stations during the day, particularly Gotherington, Toddington and Broadway. Look out for notices at the stations.

SPECIAL TRAINS TO NOTE ■ 08:45 from Toddington: This will be the only opportunity to enjoy a ride behind 7109 Joyce over the weekend; due to its diminutive size and low top speed we are letting Joyce shunt at Winchcombe for the day. However, the early morning train will see Joyce make its sedate journey to Winchcombe in what we are assured will be its longest journey in preservation to date! ■ 12:28 from Broadway, Pines Express: The highlight of the show, each day at 12:28 the Pines Express will leave Broadway and run non-stop to Cheltenham, arriving at 13:13, the exact time the real Pines Express was timed to leave Cheltenham Spa in British Railways days. Former S&D and GWSR resident 9F class 92203 Black Prince will do the honours on Friday and Saturday, recreating many a summer’s day when 92203 and her sisters (including 92220 Evening Star) were called upon to work the premier express trains. For Sunday, 34028 Eddystone will take up the duty, recreating its own past hauling the iconic train over the route.
■ 14:36 from Toddington, Mendip Merchantman: In the dying days of the Somerset and Dorset, the LCGB organised a railtour that brought a SR Merchant Navy class to the line for the one and only time. Sister 35011 General Steam Navigation was that engine so our own 35006 P&O makes the perfect stand in! Complete with recreated headboards and discs, this train is a further nod to the last days of this iconic route. Be sure to visit the General Steam Navigation group stand at Toddington – they are restoring the engine to its original condition. ■ Evening train, 18:45 from Toddington and return: On Saturday evening, join us for an additional trip down the line behind 92203 Black Prince, a former long-term resident of the GWSR returning for the first time in over 10 years. This engine holds a special place in the hearts of many of volunteers and visitors who will recall fond memories of this engine in its time on our line.
REFRESHMENTS Light refreshments are available at all stations except Hayles Abbey Halt. The beer tent is at Winchcombe station. More substantial offerings are at Toddington and Winchcombe, while home-made fare is on offer from Savita at Gotherington Halt (make sure you are in the front two coaches if you are getting off here!).

S & D STARS OF THE SHOW VISITING LOCOMOTIVES ■ BR Standard 9F class 2-10-0 no. 92203 Black Prince by courtesy of the North Norfolk Railway and Friends of Black Prince. This locomotive was a one-time resident of Bath Green Park and worked trains such as the celebrated ‘Pines Express’ over the Somerset & Dorset between Bournemouth and Bath. This is a welcome return to the Cotswolds for the engine, which was owned by the late artist David Shepherd from 1968 until 2016 and was for many years a resident on the GWSR. It is entirely appropriate that this is the engine’s first visit away from the North Norfolk Railway since it arrived from Toddington. ■ Rebuilt SR West Country class 4-6-2 No. 34028 Eddystone by courtesy of Southern Locomotives Limited and the Swanage Railway. Eddystone was the first of the original Southern Railway Bulleid ‘air-smoothed’ Pacifics to be rebuilt to more conventional form in 1958, after which it was based at Bournemouth. From there it was a regular performer over the Mendips in charge of heavy passenger services such as the ‘Pines Express’, often with the classic combination of a former LMS 4-4-0 as pilot engine. This will be a good opportunity to compare the rebuilt West Country with the resident and larger Merchant
Navy No. 35006 which is of very similar appearance, especially when they double head on Friday and Saturday. ■ LMS-designed Ivatt class 2 2-6-2T no. 41312 by courtesy of the Mid-Hants Railway. There were allocations of these delightful tank locomotives at Bath Green Park and Templecombe.
Rebuilt West Country 34028 Eddystone will be an undoubted star of the show as a past regular on the S&D. (David Ensor)

41312 is not thought to have worked over the S & D although it was for a time based at Bournemouth. It had a number of allocations on the Southern Region and when at Bournemouth, it worked the last steam-hauled Lymington branch service. It finally moved to London handling empty stock between Waterloo and Clapham and was withdrawn from Nine Elms at the end of SR steam in July 1967. 41312 crosses Oldbury viaduct on the SVR. ■ Sentinel 4wvb No. 7109 Joyce by courtesy of Andy Chapman and the Somerset & Dorset Railway Heritage Trust. A quirky design that bears little resemblance to a conventional steam locomotive, this 1927-built engine is powered by two 100hp twin-cylinder, double-acting transverse engines, supplied with steam from a vertical boiler. Two similar locomotives were bought by the S&D for shunting at Radstock and Joyce will be employed shunting throughout the event at Winchcombe station, providing plenty of opportunity for visitors to examine this unusual engine close-up. ■ LMS-designed Ivatt class 2MT 2-6-0 No. 46521 by courtesy of Standard Locomotives Limited, the Charles Newton Trust and the Great Central Railway. This attractive locomotive happens to be on loan to the GWSR for the summer months and is thus taking part in the festival, although the class had no association with the Somerset & Dorset Railway! Nevertheless, it is a welcome return for the engine which has visited the GWSR twice before.

at Salisbury mainly working services between Waterloo and Exeter. The locomotive was built at Eastleigh in 1941 to Bulleid’s controversial and novel air smoothed design, but was rebuilt to its present form in 1959. Did the ‘Merchant Navy’ class ever work over the S & D? There is only one record of that happening – to sister 35011 on a special. The latter engine is being overhauled to its original condition. ■ Modified ‘Hall’ class 4-6-0 No. 7903 Foremarke Hall. The ubiquitous and highly successful mixed-traffic locomotives of the Great Western Railway and Western Region of British Railways were the Collett ‘Hall’ class. The ‘Modified Hall’ was a late development by Hawkesworth of the class, that further improved their efficiency. No. 7903 was turned out of Swindon works by British Railways in 1949. Foremarke Hall has been based on the GWSR ever since it re-entered service following restoration in 2004. ■ ‘Manor’ class 4-6-0 no. 7820 Dinmore Manor. A ‘go anywhere’ design of mixed-traffic locomotive, the ‘Manors’ were particularly associated with the Cambrian Coast line from Shrewsbury to the Welsh coast, frequently working the ‘Cambrian Coast Express’ over this challenging route, but were also no strangers to the West Country. No. 7820 was completed at Swindon works in 1950,

the first member of the class to be built postwar after hostilities interrupted production. ■ GWR 4200 class 2-8-0T No. 4270. The oldest locomotive working over the weekend, No. 4270 was built in 1919. It spent all of its working life handling heavy coal traffic in South Wales, being withdrawn in 1962. It was the subject of a long and detailed restoration largely away from Toddington, entering service on the GWSR in 2014. All locomotives are subject to availability.
PLEASE STAY SAFE! You will enjoy many fine locomotives performing on the GWSR this special weekend. To get the most out of your day: ■ Platforms and trains are likely to be busy so please heed requests from station staff and keep clear of platform edges ■ Our carriages have slam doors so watch out for fingers
(especially youngsters) getting painfully trapped. Do not open doors until the train has come to a stand ■ When alighting make sure you are stepping on to a platform. Some platforms are shorter than the length of the trains... especially at Hayles and Gotherington Halts where you can get off only from
the front two coaches ■ Lost child or parent? Ask a member of station staff for help. A good rendezvous is outside the station master’s office at each of our main stations ■ First Aid: If you or someone you are with needs help, please ask any member of station staff.
