Are classic scooter prices reaching extortionate levels?
H
aving spare time on my hands recently, I thought I’d troll through some of the online internet sites to get an update on prices currently being asked for classic scooters – and I couldn’t believe what I found. For just over £10,000 a S1 Framebreeather Lambretta was on offer (albeit a nicely restored one now sporting a 200cc SX engine), or even a Series 3 Li for a tad under £10,000 – what’s going on? I’m fully aware that the cost of living increases year-by-year, but are scooters really worth that sort of money – they might reflect how much the scooter has cost the

owner, who in turn tries to recoup what they think their scooter is worth – but to the purchaser, is it being realistic? Well it might be to that rich bloke who’s got more money than sense, but in my opinion it’s all a bit self-defeating for the scooterist in general. Pushing prices up just helps to push people away from our lifestyle – especially the youngsters, who probably won’t be able to afford the purchase of a classic scooter (unless they have rich parents). In a lifestyle where the average of a classic scooterist is getting older year-byyear, this sort of thing does nothing to help encourage new blood onto the scene.
NOTICE ANYTHING DIFFERENT?
Yes, it’s that question that many males (me included) dread if it’s being asked by your partner. But in this case I’m talking about the discreet makeover we've just carried out on Classic Scooterist, starting this issue. As in any relationship (I’m talking about the one between Classic Scooterist and you the reader here) we like to try and keep things looking fresh. Of course, not everyone likes too much change, so although we’ve tweaked a few things we hope we haven’t gone too far overboard, so read on and enjoy the new look.

IoW rally relocates to Sandown Airport For the past year rumours have abounded that the BSRA’s IoW national rally venue at Smallbrook Stadium was under threat due to possible redevelopment plans. And with funding for this venture
now having been secured, the future of the annual scooter event being held at Smallbrook came into doubt. As a consequence of this, the VFM, who organise the event on
behalf of the BSRA have decided to change venues and the 2020 event will now be based at Sandown Airport where there will be a huge camping area with easy access to the rally site.
Steve Hine – can you help?
Between 1979 and 1993, Steve Hine used to race scooters. He contacted us recently to see if we could ask any of our readers if they had any pictures of him racing. If you have and are happy to share them with Steve, then please contact us here at Classic Scooterist.
Do you have a question?
Can Classic Scooterist help you find the answer? It doesn’t necessarily have to be a technical question and can be about any scooter-related subject. If we don’t know the answer ourselves, then we’ll throw your question over to our readers to see if they can help. Email scooterguru@ scooteristscene.com with your questions, but don’t expect an instant answer – sometimes these things take time.

Piaggio recall the 300HPE Piaggio has recalled various models of the 2019 Vespa GTS and GTV 300 HPE range due a potential braking problem. It would appear that some machines have brake lines that have been incorrectly galvanised and this could lead to hydrogen leaking into the brake fluid, thus reducing braking efficiency. The recall is just a precaution according to Piaggio and owners of affected machines should already have been contacted. If owners have any doubt as to whether this affects their bike, they should contact their local Vespa dealer quoting the recall number PP2ZZQ1904_GTS.

CP ONE35 KIT (part 2)
One giant step…
L
ast issue I looked at the CPOne35 kit detailing those J range and Luna line machines that it’s been designed for and providing the background history that’s made the CP One35 a required piece of kit. I also looked at what’s in the kit itself along with carburettors, fuel and gearing. During the past few months my friend and fellow Luna-tic, John Walklate, has been acquiring the relevant parts of the kit so he could convert his Lui 50 CL into something that can now comfortably keep-up with 2020 traffic. Hopefully, in the not-too-distant future I’ll get the chance to go for a spin on his machine and give a road test write up. Anyway, back to providing more information on the various parts of the kit…
IGNITION:
The original ignition on your J or Luna line machine can still be used, BUT (there always is) Casa Performance have developed and manufactured a new Italian-made 12v electronic ignition system – the Ducati Firefly. There’s a number of advantages to using this system including: Genuine full 90w power output (so great lights even at low revs) Single pick-up Full Ducati guarantee CNC manufactured aluminium fan (making it robust); this is a Casa Performance HiFlow item which reduces drag but massively increases airflow
EXHAUST ISSUES
In time Casa Performance will be manufacturing two types of exhaust to be used with this kit; these will be a standard-type and a sports-type. If you look at it as a whole the power output you get will in part be due to which type of exhaust you use. In respect of Casa Performance, their aim is that by using their exhausts you’ll be provided with at least 10bhp if you use the standard item and 12 bhp-plus if you use the sports model. These are figures based on using the CP One35 kit out of the box and un-tuned. So what about your original Luna line items? The exhaust flange on the kit
8
WWW.CLASSICSCOOTERIST.COM W WW.CLASSICSCOOTERIST.COM
has 4x 7mm fixing studs, unlike the original two-stud fixings. However, you can still use the original exhausts as two of the four studs present on the cylinder are in the original positions. However, 50cc Lui engines DO NOT have the additional exhaust mounting lugs cast into the engine casing to the right of the flywheel cowling (as on the 75cc machines). To fix this problem, a stainless steel flywheel spacer ring which fits under the 50cc flywheel cowling has the additional lug incorporated in it. The adapter ring also doubles-up as a spacer to fit under the 50cc flywheel cowlings as they’re shallower than the 100/125cc cowlings and use of them obtains the correct height when used in conjunction with the 100/125cc cylinder cowlings.
TRANSMISSION
Innocenti manufactured the J and Luna line clutches in either 2- or 3-plate versions, dependant on which model they were to be fitted to. There are three different sizes of clutch (bell) crown wheel sprockets which have teeth sizes of 45, 46 and 47. If that wasn’t enough the J range (45, 46 and 47 teeth items) use a needle bearing (within a pressed in steel race) whilst the Luna line items used a bronze bush. (46 and 47 tooth items). Innocenti confusingly produced two types of central clutch spid ders (they needed to, as the 2- or 3-plate clutches had different heights). The 50cc machines use the 2-plate clutch which cannot be used with this kit. Without
getting too technical, the 3-plate clutch spiders have different sizes and when choosing what you use, you need to ensure that it’s a 3-plate type with the correct sized central splined hole to match your gearbox cluster. There’s a wealth of information on the Rimini Lambretta Centre site, so it’s best to read-up on what you need in respect of both the J range and Luna machines. It should be noted that a Lunamaster modern cassette-type clutch has been made for use with the kit. You should bear in mind though that the Lunamaster can only be used with a 4-speed gearbox endplate.
SPROCKETS & DRIVE CHAINS
I could write a whole article on this issue, but I think it best that anyone with the kit, or thinking of buying the kit, uses the information on the RLC website. Ultimately there’s a lot of information contained within the website and this will help guide you on your choices. As for chain guides, you can choose to use the standard item or a remade Casa Performance one – I guess it depends on how much you want or have to spend on your engine.
CYLINDER & FLYWHEEL COWLINGS
Again Innocenti produced a number of different cylinder and flywheel cowlings during the production runs of both the J range and Luna line machines. It’s worth noting that all standard Innocenti cowlings can be used. The J range items are steel, while the Luna line ones are hard plastic. [NOTE: if you own a 50cc or 75cc machine then you’ll need to fit the Casa Performance flywheel spacer ring under the flywheel cowling to distance it away from the engine casing, so that it’s then correctly aligned with the taller Cento/J 125/ Starstream cylinder cowling]. The J range cylinder cowlings are either the short type used in the 50cc machines

PM exhaust for RA 300 models
or tall type used on the 100 or 125 cc machines. Luna line cylinders are all short type irrespective of whether they’re for the 50cc or 75cc models. To fit the CP One35 kit you’ll need the tall type cylinder cowling – so if you don’t own one, get looking for a Cento, J125 or Starstream item. The original Innocenti or Indian SIL cowling will need to be cut on the inlet side so that it clears the reed valve assembly casting. The aperture on the exhaust side needs little modification. As if all of this wasn’t enough, I need to point out that there are differences in the original cowlings (wherever they’re made) and on some you’ll need to enlarge the spark plug hole.
MODIFICATIONS REQUIRED
The general aim of Casa Performance was to make the CP One35 as close to being a ‘plug and play’ item as possible. But any scooterist will know that this isn’t always possible. As far as the engine is concerned there are no modifications required to the engine casing itself. The frame doesn’t need any modification though the rear mudguard needs a five centimetre section removing from it, so that it doesn’t foul the reed valve inlet manifold when the suspension is under movement. On Luna line machines (given that you’re going to need the taller cylinder cowling) I need to point out that the cylinder comes into close proximity to the underside of the frame under heavy suspension movement, so it’s a wise move to upgrade the rear shocker to a Series 3/GP BGM item with two special reduction bushes. Casa Performance says this will massively improve the scooter’s handling.
TUNING
Ah the dark art of scooter tuning! I guess many folk won’t be satisfied with the straight out of the box 135cc concept and will look
to push the kit further. To this end Casa Performance have left a large base gasket face area, whiich includes an integral extra lug for a third transfer port on the underside of the barrel and the two transfer ports are both ‘lipped’ over on their extremity at the base gasket face as well. What does that mean? In short, if you want to open the transfer ports, then the lip can easily be removed and the side of the transfer ports then increases dramatically.
IN CONCLUSION
The CP One35 kit is designed and sold as a useable road-going kit for everyday use, so that your J range machine or your Luna line machine can be used as a daily rider for commuting or even used for touring. Casa Performance are keen to point out that it’s NOT a race kit, but if you want to tune it then the potential is definitely there. I think kudos has to be given to Dean Orton, the team at Rimini Lambretta Centre and Casa Performance for producing a kit that will transform so many of Innocenti’s lower cc scooters into machines that can become more useable. John Walklate has not long finished the build of his engine (with the help of Matt Wade) so his Lui 50 CL is now undergoing its running-in period. I’m looking to take the scooter for a test ride and in a future issue we’ll look at the kit and any issues that John and Matt ran into during the build of Johnny’s machine and ultimately how the machine performs when it’s out and about.
