014 WHO’S WHO
Everything you could possibly want to know about every single rider taking part in this year’s Isle of Man TT races. The who, what and the why. We’ve put the race numbers in for the top 20 riders and handily left blank boxes next to the other entries too, so when you get the numbers before the races you can fill them in yourself. S’easy this system.
044 IT HAPPENED THERE: THE STORY OF TT 2013
A reminder and homage to the heroic rides put in across the board at last year’s event. It was really all about one man in the

solo classes, until the old hand and living legend decided to stamp his authority over the Senior race. And in the sidecars we were treated to two first-time winners. A special year.
The only guide you’ll need to the most prime of places to watch the action from at this year’s TT event. But get there early!
058THE GUV’NOR. MR McGUINNESS
072 HUTCHY AND BROOKES
He’s stood on top of the TT podium 20 times. Twenty times! With the last win coming in the final race of last year. There’s plenty more to come from McG and this year he’s facing probably one of the strongest years in terms of competition he’s ever faced. Island Racer sat down for the most frank heart-to-heart there’s ever been with the living legend.
The Milwaukee Yamaha pairing have had the devil’s own job over the winter in terms of trying to psyche up for the TT. First they were racing, then they weren’t, then they might and now they are. Thank goodness we get to see the fastest ever Newcomer (Brookes) and the silky smooth styler (Hutchy) doing their thing on The Island. Here’s the story of what happened behind the scenes.
082 THE TT THEN AND NOW
Glorious images showing how much and how little some things at the TT have changed over the years.
090 THAT MAN, DUNLOP
His was the headline performance at last year’s TT and these days there’s a very real feeling around the paddock that Michael Dunlop has learnt to deal with the huge pressure that being a Dunlop and racing on The Island brings. As wonderfully in touch with a bike as his dad Robert and Uncle Joey ever were, Dunlop tells Island Racer about the past, present and future for his TT ambitions.
098 HILLIER. AIN’T NO LIGHTWEIGHT
James Hillier romped to a 119mph lap on the 650cc Kawasaki last year. That’s a frankly amazing lap on that
motorcycle and it contributed to his maiden TT win. But the kid kept on impressing and did what many thought was impossible: hanging on to a hard charging McGuinness on the bigger bikes. Impressive stuff. Very, very impressive.
106 THE SMOKING GONE
Two-stroke motorcycles gave The Island a very unique sound and smell as they tore around The Mountain Course. Malc Wheeler pays homage to some of the great rides on the great screamers over the years.
126 THE KNOWLEDGE: THE ISLAND RACER ENCYCLOPAEDIA
Every stat you could possibly need to know about the TT event plus a ready reckoner so that you can keep track of the speeds and times that you’re seeing being put in by the guys during the races.
THIS PAGE There’s nothing better than the solitude and peace of an afternoon on the Isle of Man.Well, we say that there’s nothing better... of course, when the lads start banging in 131mph+ laps that’s a LOT better. Obviously. Especially for us fans.

FLAG DOWN
THE
KING ON HIS COURSE
John McGuinness is chased through St Ninian’s crossroads by his own leaping shadow as he powers the Honda TT Legends Fireblade to victory on the last lap of the Senior TT. The Morecambe man had to dig deep to hold off the attack of his young team-mate Michael Dunlop who was going for a five-timer but a brace of 131-plus-mph laps and two brilliant pitstops gave him a 10 second advantage at the chequered flag and his 20th TT win. Up to that point he had ridden faster in every race than he had ever ridden before and still not managed to win but ‘Mr TT’ had saved his best till last. I have been privileged to photograph all of those victories and I have never seen John so happy to win. He threw his gloves into the cheering crowd, tossed his helmet up in the air and did a little victory jig through the winners’ enclosure as he celebrated the win that keeps him in the hunt to close down on the late, great Joey Dunlop’s record of 26 TT victories.

Dunlop gets rolling
ABOVEThe eyes have it. At 140mph too!
46 IslandR a c e r
Michael Dunlop took his first ever Superbike TT victory on the opening Sunday afternoon at the 2013 TT. There was something in the air that just told us that this trip to the top of the podium was just the start of something big. The hard charging Dunlop fired his way into the lead at Ballaugh on the opening lap and kept building the quick laps so effectively that by the end of the race he’d bagged a whopping 40 second victory ahead of Cameron Donald and John McGuinness, McG dashing back to the podium after overcoming a one minute pit-lane penalty to set a new outright lap record on the final lap. After a 45-minute delay due to a road traffic accident, the six lap race finally got under way at 3pm. From the off it was Gary Johnson who set the early pace, the Honda rider holding a 1.5 second lead over Dunlop at Glen Helen on lap one with McGuinness a further second back. By Ballaugh Dunlop had taken over at the front, turning the deficit to Johnson into a one second advantage and with an opening lap of 130.842mph, the Honda TT Legends rider held a 3.2sec lead over new second placed rider Guy Martin, Johnson had slipped to third ahead of McGuinness, Donald and Bruce Anstey. By Glen Helen on lap two, Johnson was back up to second place, two seconds up on Martin but now 4.4sec adrift of the flying Dunlop while McGuinness, riding in complete Joey Dunlop livery to celebrate 30 years since the 26-time winner’s first victory for Honda, was still, surprisingly, back in fourth. By the end of the lap though,
he was up to second but some 15 seconds down on Dunlop who was continuing to pull away after storming to his first ever 131mph+ lap. Coming into the second pit stop at the end of lap four, Dunlop was the only rider above 130mph and it stretched his advantage over McGuinness to 30.8sec although that soon increased with his Honda TT Legends team-mate being hit with a one minute pit-lane penalty dropping him behind Martin and back to fourth. Dunlop had now caught McGuinness and Donald on the road, with the trio circulating in close formation and all he had to do was continue that for the final laps to claim his fourth TT win. 19-time winner McGuinness was piling on the coals as he pushed hard to get back on the podium but while that was happening lap five spelt disappointment for sixth placed Dan Stewart who retired at Sulby Village with a holed radiator. As McGuinness closed in on Martin, Dunlop was able to ease back in the final lap and bring the bike home for a famous win. McGuinness was mightily impressive though as he set a new outright lap record on the final lap in his hunt for the final podium place, 131.671mph, to claim third from Martin and make it a Honda 1-2-3. After the race, Dunlop said: “This is just fantastic. It’s a dream come true. It hasn’t sunk in yet, it really is something special to win this race. “My pit crew did a great job and I was able to take it easier on the last few laps. I’m not worried what happens for the rest of the week now!” Cummins took a good fifth on the Milwaukee Yamaha, the first time he’d completed a six lap race since the accident year of 2009. Michael Rutter was sixth, with James Hillier seventh, from Anstey, William Dunlop and the quite stunning Josh Brookes. Brookesy crossed the line in 10th place, taking the plaudits as the fastest ever newcomer with a final lap of 127.726mph.

The thing is that – no matter how much you try and how fast you go – you can never get away from what has always made the event purely brilliant.
