The motorcycle manoeuvre test is to remain off-road and conducted in test centres, the Department for Transport has announced. Road Safety Minister Stephen Hammond said that a thorough review of the current test structure concluded moving the off-road element to the road would increase injuries and costs, so the test will remain a two-stage one. Mr Hammond said: “The Motorcycle Test Review explored whether the whole of the practical motorcycle test could be carried out on the road without jeopardising rider safety or test standards and without increasing costs. Research carried out for the review showed that an on-road

manoeuvre test would lead to 17 times the number of serious incidents per year – especially as a result of the higher speed exercises.” British Motorcyclists’ Federation (BMF) Government relations executive Chris Hodder said: “The BMF is disappointed and angry three years of our time has been wasted being part of a review the Driving Standards Agency had already made its mind up about. “While initially we were optimistic as we had ministerial support, after a few months it became obvious the DSA was not keen on making changes. Naturally, the BMF will continue lobbying to dramatically increase test provision as this will be essential to the

future of motorcycling in the UK.” The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) is also disappointed, after months of discussion and half a million pounds of taxpayers’ money, the motorcycle test protocols remain an unreasonable barrier to novice riders. MAG chairman John Mitchell said: “The impression that emerges from this debacle is that there are those in the DfT whose approach to safety issues is to discourage motorcycling by making access to it as hard as possible.”

Ride to Work Day 2013 proves big success This year’s Ride to Work Day took place on June 17, with dealers, biker cafes and business up and down the country taking part... and hailing it a success. This year’s event saw the largest measured rider participation ever, with more than 8000 riders on the event’s Facebook page plus 1200 on Twitter

pledging their support. Manufacturer support came from Harley-Davidson, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Honda and ZingBikes, while insurance companies, BikeSure, Carole Nash, MCE and Bennetts all helped promote the event and held their own Ride to Work Day celebrations. Dealers and biker cafes opened early, with special offers and free bacon sandwiches, cakes and hot drinks to welcome their riders. Even councils in Leicestershire and Neath held events in their car parks, with free bacon rolls for passing bikers. Dine out with true biking legends You could be sitting down to dine with some of the greatest names from motorcycling’s hall of fame this summer. The Classic TT Heroes’ Dinner will be held on Sunday, August 25 during this year’s inaugural Classic TT Races event. The evening will take place in the new TT VIP Club facility, situated at the heart of the race paddock. The who’s who of motorcycle racing attending includes modern TT stars John McGuinness, Conor Cummins, Ian Lougher, Bruce Anstey, Dave Molyneux, Cameron Donald, James Hillier, Michael and William Dunlop and Gary Johnson – all of whom raced at this year’s TT. Yamaha reveals XV950 bobber Yamaha’s new 942cc, belt drive, air-cooled V-twin XV950 bobber style bike will be available from September and will start from £7199 for the entry level version. If you want to spend £400 more, you can get a sportier R version with Öhlins shocks, buckskinlook seat, a racing stripe colour scheme and ABS. The bike is already available in America under the Bolt moniker, and looks to be a rival to HarleyDavidson’s entry-level 883 Sportster.

Lotus to make 200bhp superbike British car maker Lotus will be releasing its first ever motorcycle. Lotus is making its CT-01 machine in collaboration with German car racing team Kodewa, the Holzer Group and designer Daniel Simon. The C-01 will utilise Formula One car technology and construction methods, made from materials such as aerospace quality steel, carbon and titanium. On the design front, Daniel Simon is responsible for the Tron lightcycle and has also worked for Lamborghini and Bugatti, as well as designing the black and gold colour scheme of Lotus’s LMP2 cars. Racing team Kodewa has plenty of experience, having competed in F1 and endurance racing. The bike’s components will be made by the Holzer Group’s state of the art CNC machines. Lotus will release proper images of the C-01 shortly.

TT winning JPN replicas on sale Fancy a replica John Player Special to grace your garage? Peter Williams, who won the TT in 1973 on a John Player Norton monocoque machine lapping at 107.27mph, has set up his own company to start building them again. Peter Williams Motorcycles Ltd will be building 25 limited edition replicas of the 1973 JPN monocoque, which featured a beam frame, onepiece cast alloy wheels, disc brakes and mass centralisation. Only four original 1973 JPN monocoques exist, making it pretty tricky to get hold of an original machine. Williams will be building the £65,000 replicas with access to one of the original bikes, plus factory drawings and original components, having translated all of the information into 3D CAD models. US manufacturer’s fitting celebration ‘It’s a bare cop’ for police road safety housed the new Victory assembly line. Full-scale production was scheduled to begin in July 1998, but a group of employees came up with the idea of building the first Victory bike on the Fourth of July, so the nation’s birthday becomes Victory’s birthday. Chuck Crone, who was the Spirit Lake plant manager in 1998, recalled: “We were scheduled to start Victory production in early July, and maybe about three to four weeks ahead of that, I was in a staff meeting and I said ‘why don’t we build it on the Fourth of July?’ “They all looked at me like I was crazy, but by the end of the day, I’ll bet I had 10 guys who had said, ‘yeah, let’s build it on the fourth’.”

How’s this for a bad deal – I had bike cover with eight months of a year’s policy left at a cost of £183. I cancelled it and was told I’d get a refund of £10.31 which could take three months. Has anybody else suffered similar? Keith Hobson It’s a sad fact of life that with most forms of insurance, the devil is indeed in the detail, or small print. Keith, you need to read the policy details thoroughly and see what the cancellation policy is. However, the amount you say does seem a little on the punitive side. Let us know what the outcome is. Regular prescription glasses are available like this and used for driving a car. The advantages of such a visor are obvious. My second point concerns winter/rain gloves. They just about all seem to go over the cuff instead of inside, and my gloves end up as water butts as the rain drains down my arms. ★ MCM STAR LETTER OF THE MONTH Scooter savvy Dear MCM

I was interested to read Keith Hewitt’s letter in the June issue about a potential separate scooter section in MCM. I’m a maxi-scooter fan (now on my fourth T-MAX!) and it would be great to have more scooter news (when it comes along). Incidentally, I do appreciate MCM’s deeper and more sensible coverage of scoots than the drivel you get in most of the glossy mags. But do I want a separate section? I’m not sure. What often irritates me is that scoots and bikes are still

seen as something quite different, when there should be a lot more crossover. For example, many bikers would be happy to ride the CB500X reviewed in the June issue as it’s a ‘proper’ bike, but wouldn’t even consider a TMAX, despite the T-MAX having the same power output, and arguably more sophisticated engineering. So I fear having a separate section might have the effect of perpetuating this idea of differences between scoots and bikes, rather than break down the divide. Anyway, I really enjoy the paper and further coverage of scoots (in any format) would be very welcome. Tim Bounds

Education, education, education Dear MCM

I was astounded when I recently heard a radio information advert concerning car drivers pulling out on motorcyclists at junctions. It claimed that on average 30 riders a day are either injured or killed due to this happening. Surely this needs addressing from the very first day car drivers start learning to drive? I feel it should be brought into the driving curriculum that driving instructors make new pupils very aware of how vulnerable motorcyclists are, particularly when not being

seen by car drivers at junctions. It should be drummed into drivers to check and then double check for riders, particularly if it is a sunny day or if visibility is limited due to heavy rain or fog. I can’t see this would cost anything to introduce, but it may well save lives and injury. Most of us have chosen to wear high visibility clothing – which I feel may have saved me on more than one occasion – but we shouldn’t really need to take these measures to keep ourselves safe on our roads. Yamaha’s new £6799 MT-09 is the first Yamaha triple to be launched for more than 30 years, and will available in UK dealers from September. Yamaha confirmed we can expect a host of new three-cylinder machines over the next couple of years, although wouldn’t say just yet which bikes they would likely be. However, it’s been revealed a range of new triples from the company will go on show at the Motorcycle Live Show in November. There’s obvious excitement in the market at the news, with Yamaha dealers reporting they are overwhelmed by the amount of sales since the MT09 was announced last month. Following on from last issue’s report of the Japanese manufacturer’s all-new in-line-triple, MCM has spoken exclusively to Yamaha UK’s marketing manager, Simon Belton, about the manufacturer’s hopes for its new 847cc model. He said: “It’s hard to express just how significant the MT-09 is to Yamaha. It marks the beginning of a whole new direction for us, which we’re massively excited about. This isn’t a one-off. This is the start of something very, very special.” Simon went on to explain the thinking behind the edgy-looking motorcycle, which was specifically tailored for the European market. “The focus for the model wasn’t its capacity. As important as that is, the bike’s core values came first. It had to be agile, torquey and attractive. It had to suit real world riding, which meant a low mass weight, a comfortable seat height and plenty of usable power”. Historically, Yamaha has pioneered many motorcycling innovations, most recently with the R1 and its crossplane crank motor. While the MT-09 is devoid of such technology, its 120° firing order (0° - 240° - 480°) mimics the philosophy, meaning it inherits the same advantages of strong low-to-mid-range torque and instant throttle response. Another benefit of the package is the weight saving of a narrow in-line-triple configuration. Compared directly to its less powerful sibling, the FZ8, the MT-09 boasts an engine weight saving of 10kg, with a further 10kg saved by its lightweight, die-cast aluminium chassis. When asked whether this might signal the end of the line for the brand’s more traditional inline-four, a Yamaha spokesman told us: “The FZ8 will continue. There are still customers who prefer smooth and powerful parallel-four engines.”

How Yamaha made the MT-09 affordable Considering recent trends, the last thing anyone would have expected was to see Yamaha pricing its new MT-09 cheaper than its key rivals. Yamaha’s Simon Belton explained to MCM how this was achieved. “The core reason behind the fantastic pricing of our new MT-09 is down to aggressive buying at the factory end. We know there’s no point in producing a model that is wrongly

priced, so the challenge was to find a way of making this bike affordable to build. “To achieve this goal, Yamaha looked to new suppliers who could guarantee top quality components at the right cost. This key factor, accompanied by a less dramatic Yen-to-Sterling exchange rate than what’s been seen in recent times, has allowed for the new model’s attractive price tag.”

Was an inline-triple configuration essential?

MT bikes stand for a level of riding excitement and character that is difficult to achieve with a parallel four. Inline twins and V-twins in this capacity class and for our purposes have a too narrow usage range. The inline-triple was the ideal configuration for MT-09.

The concept will meet future requirements for ‘higher excitement at lower speeds’ and appeal to experienced sports riders. The technology is advanced. The price is competitive. We expect a good impact even though key motorcycle markets like Italy and Spain are struggling.

Why build a triple? We asked MCM’s own technical expert, Neil Charlton, why Yamaha benefits from an inline-three configuration. “Making an engine with three cylinders allows for modular design philosophy; components like pistons and con rods can be shared between different engines, reducing development and manufacturing costs. “A triple is also lighter, narrower and cheaper to make than a comparable four. One less cylinder means less friction, therefore better fuel economy. The remaining three cylinders must also be bigger for a given displacement; this means lower peak revs with torque moved further down the rev-range. Throw in a distinctive, sonorous exhaust note and you’ve got a winner for Yamaha.”

Where did the inspiration for the MT-09 come from?

MT stands for pure bikes that offer emotional rides. We started this direction in two rather extreme positions, with the MT-01 (immediate torque) and the MT-03 (extreme agility). The MT-09 targets a middle position (high torque and high agility) but without being average. We had to wait for the triple cylinder engine to continue the MT story.

Does this signal a general realignment of Yamaha’s prices? For all future developments we have the potential to offer lower prices.

Why was this model not named the FZ-09, as it is in America?

In Europe, MT bikes play a different role to FZ bikes. The American market never imported the MT-01 and MT-03. The naked bike segment in the USA is small when compared with Europe. For this reason, it made sense to launch the bike in America under the familiar FZ name.

and it was flat as a pancake. This time I was straight on the line to recovery. Within half an hour my beloved bike was being craned onto the back of the truck. Phin positioned his Honda in front of the truck and took great delight in a camera shot of the ‘knackered BMW’ with his trusty Africa Twin steed in the front. Back on the bikes next day and we reached Gorlitz near the Polish border. This felt like a real milestone in the journey, finally we were into Eastern Europe proper. We rode on through Poland and then into Slovakia, just skimming through the corner of the Czech Republic. Passing through the scenic countryside and quaint towns, you would suddenly stumble across huge heavy industrial factories right in the middle of everything with vast chimneys reaching up. We then headed south into the Tatra Mountains. I had read up about the beauty of them and was not

disappointed. We rode along with the mountains to our right, running parallel to the range. Crossing into Hungary to Ozd we again headed south into the Bukki National Park. The following day we set off with great excitement: we were going to reach Romania and hunt out the bears. We crossed through the very formal border and stopped by the Romanian sign for a picture, by now our ninth country. I kept a diary of our daily mileage throughout the trip and we had racked up 1292 so far. We rode on, enjoying the winding country tracks with mountains in the distance and followed a beautiful stream. We passed a herd of wild horses and pulled up by the river. We found a very rough, rocky and steep track that looked like a good wild camp prospect. This track would test out our riding skills. We headed on up and after a good few miles we came out at the top with a fantastic meadowy area to camp on that overlooked for miles

all around. To get to our chosen spot we had to traverse the very steep hill along the grass like skiers – if we had fallen downhill that would have been the bikes gone. The clearing joined the edge of the thick forest and we immediately had the same thought. Prime bear territory! Before we started the trip we had shared many a laugh about how we would cope camping out wild with the bears. I had planned to spread jam on Phin’s tent to keep them off me. We had discussed roping off the tents and hanging cans from them as an alarm warning. Now, here we were – it was all very surreal. In the end we settled with very large sticks placed outside our tents at the ready but sadly we didn’t need them. We pressed on south the next day through the stunningly beautiful forested landscape with thick trees and mountains in all directions. The roads were a complete mix of new Tarmac and potted dirt tracks with no warning

between the two. We came across a large dam at lake Tau Bistra and pulled up for an ice cream. We pressed on again and drove along the shore of Lake Oasa Mika, finding a magical place to pitch up away from the road. There was not a ripple on the lake, it was quiet and surrounded by pine forests and it was a beautiful evening with a lovely sun slowly sinking down. The water was clear and we were in for a wash and swim in a flash, getting some much needed washing done. We studied Phin’s detailed Romanian map for a suitable route and enjoyed a beer or two at an old wooden table by the shore to celebrate the tour so far. Thoughts of the day job well and truly disintegrated. All around here was bear territory. We scanned the forest high and low but alas, no sightings. However, we were soon off riding a long off-road dirt section we had seen on our map – about 20 miles of it. My good old 800GS finally came into its element and it was immense fun to ❱

Bulbs are pretty essential on a bike: they’re needed for the lights and indicators. Replacing blown bulbs keeps your bike road legal as well as improving visibility and safety.

● Top tip: Halogen bulbs: do not touch glass with hands. If you do, wipe them with a lint-free cloth and brake cleaner, and allow to dry before refitting, otherwise you will stain and damage the glass.

TROUBLESHOOTING LIGHT FAILURES... Q: My indicators flash too quickly A: Do indicators flash too quickly both sides? If yes, have the indicators been replaced with LEDS instead of bulbs? The resistance of LEDs isn’t sufficient enough to allow indicator relay to work properly. If only flashing too quickly on one side, check bulbs as you probably have a blown one.

Q: My headlight doesn’t light up A: Sounds obvious but is the headlight switched on? (check switch). If more than one bulb, are they all not working? If only one bulb is out, check for blown bulb. If all are out, check fuse. If no switch, is engine running? If there’s still no light, check fuse. If the fuse is fine, check the relay (fuse box and relay position will vary from bike to bike – check your manual).

Q: My tail-light doesn’t come on A: Check bulb. Are sidelights on? If yes, check check bulb, if no, check fuse. Q: My brake lights don’t work A: Do they operate with either front or rear pedal/lever? If no, check bulb. If yes, check switch.

Fuse has small metal strip from one side to the other. If this is missing or burnt, replace with correct resistance fuse.

2: A stock taillight comprises a dual filament bulb – tail-light can work without brake light and vice versa. The bulbs are normally bayonet fitting – if struggling to fit, then you are fitting it the wrong way as there is only one way they fit.

10 things you (possibly) didn’t know about the Hayabusa

The bike once named the world’s fastest motorcycle is still a force to be reckoned with Words: Roland Brown Photography: Jason Critchell It’s a curiously familiar feeling to be careering down the Bruntingthorpe straight with my head wedged behind the screen of a Hayabusa whose speedometer is indicating just over 185mph. Although I’m vaguely aware of wind tugging my shoulders and the scenery rushing past, the former airfield’s runway is so wide that even travelling at getting on for three times the national speed limit doesn’t feel particularly fast or exciting. What it does feel is eerily reminiscent of doing exactly the same thing way back in 1999, on the launch of the original Hayabusa, whose top speed of about 190mph

made it unquestionably the world’s fastest motorcycle.

What’s new?

Much has changed since then, in the motorcycle world as much as anywhere else, but the Hayabusa has been a constant presence. Its uniquely beaked shape, as familiar now as it seemed weird back then, was barely altered when Suzuki treated the model to its one significant update. That was the 2008 revamp that saw capacity increase from 1299 to 1340cc, peak power rise from 173 to 194bhp, and the chassis beefed up with new swingarm, suspension and brakes.

Now the Hayabusa has been tweaked again. The big change for 2013 is the ’Busa gets upgraded brakes: a new pair of Brembo monobloc front calipers, plumbed with the model’s first ABS system. According to Suzuki, anti-lock stoppers were the one thing that existing Hayabusa owners felt they were missing out on. You can’t really discuss the Hayabusa without mentioning those looks. Whether you love the curvaceous Suzuki or hate it – and like many I’ve come to like it a lot more over the years – it’s surely one of the most striking and distinctive bikes ever built. This model also comes in a new

Other than that, it’s the same old Hayabusa, which will doubtless please hard-core owners, even if there’s no denying that Suzuki’s one time boss of the street status has been put firmly in

to steel construction, following cracks in the original due to being overloaded by pillion passengers. 7 Peterborough firm Radical uses modified ’Busa engines to power its range of sports and racing cars, which include four-cylinder models plus a 430bhp V8, the SR8 RX, which broke the production car lap record at the Nürburgring in 2009. 8 The original 1999-model Hayabusa remains officially the fastest ever Japanese production motorcycle due to the manufacturer’s self-imposed 300kph/186mph limit, introduced in 2000. 9 A Hayabusa became the first Pro Street drag bike to break the sevensecond barrier when Ryan Schnitz was timed at 6.90sec/203.06mph on his nitrous boosted HTP Hayabusa in Maryland, USA in 2011. What’s it like to ride?

Still, the ’Busa has a certain charm when you climb aboard, even if its instrument console looks undeniably old school, with its analogue speedo whose dial crams in too many numbers to be easily read at a glance.

New Brembo monoblocs with ABS Out on the Leicestershire lanes near Bruntingthorpe the Hayabusa felt very much the stunningly powerful but impressively composed all-rounder. For all its speed, a big part of its appeal has always been that it’s as happy on back roads as when cranking out miles at high speed on a motorway. Throttle response is one reason for that. There’s torque almost from idle, a typically Suzuki-slick gearchange, and a crisp reaction to every movement of the right wrist. Okay, there’s still no traction control, which at times might be handy with so much power available. Suzuki’s rather basic S-DMS drive mode selector is of little use, merely making the motor seem flat in its restrictive modes, rather than giving any useful boost at lower engine speeds. But the lack of electronic aids is not too critical when the throttle response is as sweet as this. And of course the ’Busa works as well as it ever did when its throttle cable is stretched tight and

that 16-valve motor is revving to or even past its 11,000rpm redline. Get a good launch, and by the time you flick into fourth, roughly 10 seconds later, you’ll have covered a quarter of a mile and will be travelling at over 140mph, with two gears and another 50mphodd still to come… Wind protection? Like much about the Hayabusa it’s good but not outstanding. The screen, which was made taller with the revision five years ago, took some breeze off my chest but not head, and can’t be adjusted. And the ’Busa did a reasonable job of keeping hands and legs out of the breeze. The generous amount of legroom added to the feeling of comfort, as did the thin but quite broad seat. There’s no reason why handling should have changed at all from the previous model, which is fine because the Hayabusa was always solid at speed and went round corners pretty well. Its multi-adjustable Kayaba suspension felt taut despite giving good ride quality. And the bike was reasonably agile even though, with a wheelbase of 1480mm and a kerb weight of over 260kg, it’s 75mm longer and roughly 60kg heavier than Suzuki’s own GSX-R1000. Then of course there’s braking ability, the one aspect of its performance to be changed. Most of the time I found the system excellent, with the fourpiston Brembo monobloc calipers, which replace the previous Tokicos, giving very sharp bite yet being very controllable. The ABS worked well, too, cutting in earlier than the best systems (such as those of BMW’s

S1000RR and Ducati’s Panigale) but allowing hard, risk-free stopping on the road and on Bruntingthorpe’s slightly gritty runway. Then I did another launch from one end of the runway, ran the Hayabusa through the gears to its electronically limited 186mph top speed, rolled off to about 100mph at the end of the straight, and squeezed the front brake lever – only to hear the front Bridgestone chirp and feel the bars snap sideways. Fortunately I released the lever quickly enough to avoid crashing. According to Suzuki the bike was not faulty. Its ABS had deactivated when the bike had wheelied slightly as I’d pulled away, not because the system had failed but because it works by

sensing the difference between front and rear wheel speeds, so deactivates if the bike wheelies, and doesn’t reset when the front wheel lands. Suzuki’s official line is that I should have been alerted when a small yellow warning light in the speedo came on moments after the front wheel lifted. Hmm. You can decide for yourself whether it’s acceptable for ABS to disengage when a bike wheelies, intentionally or otherwise. I’d say not; that it’s a serious design flaw that Suzuki needs to sort out. The Hayabusa’s one new feature could literally have proved its downfall – and still might, for other riders – although most of the time the bike’s improved stopping ability adds a level of refinement and safety.

However, the ’Busa still has plenty going for it. The iconic bird of prey is no longer the fastest, most aggressive predator in the skies. But its beak is still sharp, it hides its age well, and despite a slight increase it’s competitively priced at £11,299. Five years after its only major update, the Hayabusa still combines outrageous performance and usability with a badboy attitude to match anything on two wheels.

Your bike’s standard fuel injection mapping is a compromise between performance, economy and emissions.With a fuel injection controller it can be set just right for you Motorcyclists have long held a fascination for making their bikes go faster. Since the dawn of motorcycling we’ve tweaked, tinkered and fettled our bikes – almost entirely with the intention of making them quicker. Many of us, similar to our forefathers, have tinkered with jets, needles and sometimes different carburettors to make our bikes more powerful and, ultimately, quicker. While in the early days making a 2.5hp Fartworth Blapper a smidge quicker was considered essential – if only to raise maximum speed from 5 to 15mph and ensure the flag waver had to stay sprightly on his toes – today, our machines have evolved to the point where they offer more speed and power than most of us could ever dream of using to its full potential. However, while some riders will always strive to

improve the power of their machines, many simply want to improve the throttle response or, perhaps more importantly in these days of austerity and rising fuel prices, to improve its fuel economy. Since the 1990s, bikes have been increasingly fitted with fuel injection systems controlled by computers, due to ever-tightening EU antipollution directives, to the point where today almost all mass produced bikes have computer controlled fuel injection. So there are no more jets or needles to play with. But that doesn’t mean things can’t be changed for the better. There are many ‘black boxes’ on the market which promise the ability to give better fuel economy and/or performance on the market, so here’s MCM’s Rough Guide to guide you towards the best choice for you.

While our love affair with the humble – but admittedly rather complex and fiddly when it comes right down to it – carburettor can continue in the form of classic and post-classic bikes, the rise of computerisation on modern machinery allows for far finer control over a bike’s fuelling. It’s this fine control over how much and when an engine gets its fuel that is the driving force behind why manufacturers had to ditch the carb and make the move to computer control and fuel injection. There are two basic types of fuel injection on a bike: open loop and closed loop. A closed loop fuel system can look at what’s going into the cylinder and what unburnt fuel is leaving the cylinder and adjust accordingly (although it’s normally doing this with pollution criteria in mind). The open loop can’t monitor what is happening beyond the injector. Early systems were open loop but with the use of the catalytic convertor to further reduce emissions, the closed loop system became necessary. Put simply though, a bike can’t pass the necessary EU tests to be homologated for use without fuel injection or a catalytic convertor.

Carbs and catalytic converters just don’t go together. The reasons are complex but generally speaking to pass these tests, which include everything from drive-by noise pollution to air pollution, a bike needs to have a catalytic converter and the precious metals they contain become contaminated with high levels of unburnt fuel. It’s the precise control that a fuel injection system offers which allows the use of the catalytic converter. Now, you might have noticed a lull or dip in your bike’s power/pickup in the 5000-6000rpm range. This is typically the result of the antipollution tests mentioned above. The manufacturer manipulates the ignition and fuelling in this rev range to pass the required tests. So as you can see, a bike’s fuelling from the factory can be compromise between meeting regulations and performance. But don’t be too glum because it’s certainly not all bad for us motorcyclists. While the EU has had its way with pollution control, the very same fuel injection systems can also be altered to improve the fuelling characteristics or performance of your bike – just like tinkering with a carb in the good old days.

ElEctric drEams To adjust the fuelling, whether for economy or performance, on a carburettor meant removing the float bowl and replacing the jets, changing the slide for one with a different cutaway profile or swapping the needle, or possibly all three. That can take quite a while on one carb but on a multi-cylinder bike it’s a time consuming – not to mention skilled – task. With the advent of fuel injection, plugging in a computer can do all this. No more hands soaked in petrol and dropped jets contaminated with workshop floor dirt, just the tweaking of a few numbers with a key or the stroke of a mouse. Sounds too good to be true? Not at all. The capability to change the fuelling of a bike with a fuel controller is within the reach of anybody who can turn on a laptop.

THINgS TO CONSIdER What modifications does your bike have? If your bike is completely standard then the generic model-specific map on most of these fuelling devices will most likely prove sufficient to notice an improvement. However, if your bike is modified with an exhaust, air filter or more then the generic map won’t be correct to get the fuelling right.

There are many products available to do just this and the majority of these systems work by intercepting the signal from a bike’s ECU, which tells the injector in each throttle body how much fuel to squirt by telling it how long to squirt for, and adjusting it to increase or decrease the amount squirted. This is done by placing an electronic ‘black box’ or module in the wiring loom between the bike’s own ECU (electronic control unit) and the fuel injectors installed in the throttle bodies. This type of signal interception is typified by Dynojet’s Power Commander modules. In fact, the generic name for any box that modifies a bike’s fuelling is typically referred to as a ‘power commander’, although it’s a Dynojet trademark (just like a Hoover is the name many of us call vacuum cleaners despite it being a brand in its own right). With Dynojet’s rich history in performance carburettor internals it isn’t surprising it’s the market leader in digital ‘carburettors’, for want of a better term.

What do you want to achieve? Are you after outright performance, just to improve a throttle glitch at a certain revs, or improve the fuel economy for your daily commute? Products like the Power Commander PCV can have a bar mounted switch to give you instant access to a dry/wet weather fuelling map or full power and economy maps for normal riding and commuting/travelling. If you intend to do more than just load a model-specific map and want a custom map making for your bike, see which products your local dyno-centre recommends, otherwise you might end up with a long ride to get the work done rather than just down the road. Some of these fuel controllers, such as the DimSport Rapid Bike Racing, can be purchased

with a quickshifter and traction control capability. The price goes up accordingly. A quickshifter or traction control are things you might consider if you intend to do track days or race.

Mounting/ connectivity

Some units are smaller than others. Depending on the type of bike you have you may find some products easier to mount than others. If you have the unit fitted by a workshop/dyno centre then they can advise on which product can be mounted most suitably to your particular machine.

The hunt for power can be taken care of by these boxes, either by improving the fuelling for the bike in its current configuration or to get the fuelling right for any modifications such as a different exhaust or freer flowing air filter (it’s increasingly important the more modifications are made to a bike). www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk OUR 17 day wild camping Eastern European trip had a particular focus – to see some wild brown bears in Romania. I had bought a large-scale map of Europe and stuck on to it 17 stickers to roughly mark our proposed night stops on our horseshoe circuit of Europe. We would head due east across Germany, into Poland and then cut down through the Tatra Mountains into Slovakia, across Hungary and into Romania. We caught the midday ferry from Dover to Dunkirk and I met Phin down at the ferry terminal covered in blood with his ear half hanging off. What on earth had just happened? “I was fiddling under the bike before setting off when it fell over and the bash plate caught my ear,” he explained. For the first few days of the trip he shrugged off his weeping ear issue but it proved hard to get his helmet on and off. He ended up using a corner of cardboard to slide it on! We soon knocked back the arduous hours on the motorway through France and Germany, stopping every hour or so for a leg stretch and coffee at a service station. We passed the sign for Colditz town and had our sights well set on the border crossing into Poland near Gorlitz. During the early evening we pulled off the motorway into a small town and stopped off at a busy McDonald’s. There was a European Cup football match that night, Germany versus Holland, and there was excitement in the town. We came out after only a short grub stop and jumped back on the bikes to the motorway. However, within 10 miles I started getting an uncontrollable wiggle on the handlebars and thought I must have got a front wheel puncture. I indicated to Phin and we pulled up onto the hard shoulder of the very busy and incredibly hot motorway. Bad news indeed – a flat back tyre and clearly two

We had probably been targeted at the McDonald’s by football thugs, possibly thinking we were from Holland as we had no markings on our bikes. Within minutes I had the bike propped up, the back wheel and tyre off and the inner tube repaired but, horror of horrors, when I inflated the tube it started poking out of the two large stab wounds. We left the tyre for a few minutes and miraculously it stayed up. We checked the map and saw the fairly large town of Halle was not far away so set off at a snail’s pace. We came into the town, pulled up into a local store to buy some German beers for the night and set about locating the municipal campsite. The TomTom led us down a small gravel track alongside a very picturesque river. We were clearly in East Germany, with a number of derelict buildings dotted around all covered in brightly painted graffiti. We came round the bend in the track on the outskirts of the town and were met by a large high security gate outside the campsite with German writing on a sign. Welcome to Colditz! We located a tyre fitting place in the morning and a very helpful German owner made numerous calls for us. He told us that there were none to be found in the town, but there was a large BMW dealer in the nearby city of Leipzig, about 25 miles away, so we set off slowly again. Within five miles I got the wobble again

www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk and it was flat as a pancake. This time I was straight on the line to recovery. Within half an hour my beloved bike was being craned onto the back of the truck. Phin positioned his Honda in front of the truck and took great delight in a camera shot of the ‘knackered BMW’ with his trusty Africa Twin steed in the front. Back on the bikes next day and we reached Gorlitz near the Polish border. This felt like a real milestone in the journey, finally we were into Eastern Europe proper. We rode on through Poland and then into Slovakia, just skimming through the corner of the Czech Republic. Passing through the scenic countryside and quaint towns, you would suddenly stumble across huge heavy industrial factories right in the middle of everything with vast chimneys reaching up. We then headed south into the Tatra Mountains. I had read up about the beauty of them and was not disappointed. We rode along with the mountains to our right, running parallel to the range. Crossing into Hungary to Ozd we again headed south into the Bukki National Park. The following day we set off with great excitement: we were going to reach Romania and hunt out the bears. We crossed through the very formal border and stopped by the Romanian sign for a picture, by now our ninth country. I kept a diary of our daily mileage throughout the trip and we had racked up 1292 so far. We rode on, enjoying the winding country tracks with mountains in the distance and followed a beautiful stream. We passed a herd of wild horses and pulled up by the river. We found a very rough, rocky and steep track that looked like a good wild camp prospect. This track would test out our riding skills. We headed on up and after a good few

miles we came out at the top with a fantastic meadowy area to camp on that overlooked for miles all around. To get to our chosen spot we had to traverse the very steep hill along the grass like skiers – if we had fallen downhill that would have been the bikes gone. The clearing joined the edge of the thick forest and we immediately had the same thought. Prime bear territory! Before we started the trip we had shared many a laugh about how we would cope camping out wild with the bears. I had planned to spread jam on Phin’s tent to keep them off me. We had discussed roping off the tents and hanging cans from them as an alarm warning. Now,

here we were – it was all very surreal. In the end we settled with very large sticks placed outside our tents at the ready but sadly we didn’t need them. We pressed on south the next day through the stunningly beautiful forested landscape with thick trees and mountains in all directions. The roads were a complete mix of new Tarmac and potted dirt tracks with no warning between the two. We came across a large dam at lake Tau Bistra and pulled up for an ice cream. We pressed on again and drove along the shore of Lake Oasa Mika, finding a magical place to pitch up away from the road. There was not a ripple on the lake, it was quiet and surrounded by pine

forests and it was a beautiful evening with a lovely sun slowly sinking down. The water was clear and we were in for a wash and swim in a flash, getting some much needed washing done. We studied Phin’s detailed Romanian map for a suitable route and enjoyed a beer or two at an old wooden table by the shore to celebrate the tour so far. Thoughts of the day job well and truly disintegrated. All around here was bear territory. We scanned the forest high and low but alas, no sightings. However, we were soon off riding a long off-road dirt section we had seen on our map – about 20 miles of it. My good old 800GS finally came into its element and it was immense fun to ❱

throw around, albeit loaded up with gear. This was what we had come for; it was magic. At one rest stop in the wooded track we saw some bearprints in the mud – sadly, the closest we would come to them on this trip. On we rode towards the Serbian border following the very wide Danube River with hardly a car in sight. At one point we passed a huge face of the Romanian hero Chief Decebalus carved into a rock. Some of the road was newly laid and there were sections of completely loose dirt pitted with huge potholes. At one point I rode on ahead and left Phin to follow. When I reached the end of the river I pulled up to wait. I waited for almost 40 minutes before Phin came in at a tortoise speed. He had hit a pothole and very badly buckled his front wheel. We found a branch and propped the bike up. It was knackered and he could hardly ride the it at all. This was serious and we were a long way from anywhere. We spun the wheel, marking the bulging side with a muddy stick and set about tightening his spokes with a spanner to try and straighten it. We managed fairly well and

pressed on – the faster Phin rode the easier it was to ride. We crossed into Serbia and rode into Belgrade to try and get the wheel properly straightened. We had no proper map, and no sat nav reception. It wasn’t long before we were lost. Then a local guy riding a newlooking Kawasaki KLR 650 pulled up alongside us and asked where we were going. We explained we were looking for a campsite and he led us at breakneck speed through the city to a quiet site overlooking the Danube – perfect. We rode in search of a bike shop in the morning and stumbled across a small scooter dealership. The guy whipped Phin’s front wheel off in seconds, tied it on to the back of his scooter and shouted: “I’ll be back shortly!” He returned within the hour with a dead straight wheel. His friend was a specialist bicycle wheel builder! He advised that four or five spokes were rotten, and to ride back with great care. He would only accept 10 euros for his trouble. A few days later we finally made the Med – we had covered 3300 miles and bar one new tyre, the trip had cost us £650 – not bad at all!

Stephen Billau & Sons

From time to time a car dealership has dipped a toe in the bikers’ pool by putting the odd two-wheeler in the showroom window, but riders are often suspicious of the motives. Sometimes though, two and four wheels can sit comfortably side by side… Stephen Billau & Sons is based in Darlington, County Durham and was established by Stephen as a car dealership back in 1982, with his sons Ian and Andrew working alongside him. The business thrived and moved to the current location 13 years ago; previously the building had been used as a Volvo main dealership. Ian Billau told MCM: “We were the first car dealership in the area to sell

oddball stuff: 20k and 30k cars, seventy-grand Rollers, different things to the norm. Over the years people have caught on to that and more have started doing it, plus the way new cars are sold has changed. Seven-year warranties mean people don’t change cars as often as they did and they want cheaper, more economical ones now, so the more expensive side has dropped off. “We’ve always liked bikes and we started riding as kids, so we thought we’d have a go at selling them. We tried the cheap Chinese scooters to start with, but had nothing but trouble, so gave that up, and got a handful of cruisers in.”

So were bikes a success?

“They went no problem, blokes in their forties and older want to get off sports bikes and get something a bit comfier. It’s the same with the tourers – they sell very well, as do the adventure bikes. “It took a while for bikers to learn to trust us and recognise us as a bike dealer. They started popping in when we had a few bikes in and word started to spread. Even though all this has only happened within the last two years, we’re well established now and we’re doing very well. We’ve usually got around 60 bikes on display so we’re starting to be taken seriously.”

What sells well in the North East?

“Cruisers go very well, as do Triumph Americas. They’ve got that English heritage and style that middle-aged riders can relate to; they like to ride in Kevlar jeans, leather jacket and openface helmet. Other bikes like the BMW RTs and sports tourers sell very well too. I don’t think anybody else in the North East has as good a selection as us on those type of bikes.” Unlike many shops, Stephen Billau & Sons isn’t tied to any particular manufacturer. Ian told us: “We’re not franchised and don’t want to be. We’ve earned our own money and don’t want to be dictated to by anybody, we want to do what we want to do.” The shop is still a family affair, in fact it recently moved into its third generation. Stephen still holds the reins, Ian and Andrew run the bike side of things and Ian’s 17-year-old daughter, Nicole, has recently joined the company to run the new bike clothing and accessories shop. Even the family cat gets involved and can be seen wandering around the showroom – you’ll not find that in a solus dealer.

Motorcycles rather than cars take centre stage outside Stephen Billau & Sons Nicole has proved popular with male and female customers. The ladies especially like to be able to come in and chat to a girl about the clothing and try it on, as it’s not as intimidating as it can be to go into a male-only bike shop. Clothing was one area the business had tried to steer clear of to begin with but when the local Hein Gericke shop and White Brothers closed they started to get asked for it more often, so decided to dip a toe in the water this year. They now stock Spada, Caberg, Weise, Buffalo, Ixon, Oxford Products and WD-40, among others; it’s a growing area of the business. Cars are still a large part of the business too (they’re round the back), but bikes have taken over the recently refurbished double glass fronted building and are the most prominent thing you see on arrival.

Q&A Motorcycle courier caught in the act

Q: I am a motorbike courier in London and was in a

rush to pick up a package. The traffic was really heavy so I hopped up on the curb, rode about 100 feet past all the traffic and turned left on to the main road. I then got pulled by the police. The policeman went bonkers. He said my riding was disgusting and asked if I would have failed my test if I had ridden like that. I pleaded with him. He was having none of it and I now have a court summons for driving without due care and attention. I accept I rode on the curb but no one was there, apart from an old woman walking a dog and she got out of the way, so no harm done. As for the shops that line the path, I think they were shut, as it was early morning, so this isn’t a problem either. Also, the policeman was rude and said my driving was horrendous and I want the court to know that. I think he violated my human rights. Can I defend this? Also, I have nine penalty points on my licence. Anon

A: My advice is you have made a stupid mistake and

should plead guilty. I would go as far as to say you have been an idiot. You rode on the path and that is illegal. In fact, with pedestrians on it (or the possibility of pedestrians being on it) means your actions were downright dangerous and you could have been cited for dangerous driving which carries with it at least a compulsory 12-month disqualification from driving. In my opinion you have got away lightly with a summons for driving without due care and attention. You should plead guilty and put forward mitigation to try and obtain the most lenient sentence possible. With nine points on your licence the court’s starting point will be to disqualify you

Specialist motoring solicitor and rider Andrew ‘Chef’ Prendergast deals with a few interesting riding dilemmas... from driving for at least six months under the totting up rules – i.e. where you have 12 or more points on your licence. To avoid disqualification you will need to persuade the court it would cause an ‘exceptional hardship’ to disqualify you from riding if this is true. An example may be that you would lose your job if you cannot ride and if you have no money coming in you could lose your house etc. Just being inconvenienced by a disqualification will not cut it. As for the policeman being ‘rude’ I very much doubt he ‘violated’ your human rights, so my advice is either raise a formal complaint with the police or ‘man up’ and move on.

Can’t see the wood for the trees

Q: I was riding home on my R6 one night a couple of

weeks ago. I went around a left-hand bend on a country lane when the front end of my bike just let go and I fell off. I slid across the road and ended up in a bush. Thankfully, the oncoming car did not hit me. The chap in the car stopped to help me and found I had hit a big wooden scaffolding plank that was in the middle of the road. While I am chuffed to still be alive (I narrowly avoided a tree), I broke my wrist, trashed my bike, have been off work for six weeks and lost money. I am a mechanic and need to use my hands, so a broken wrist has not helped. The accident was in the middle of nowhere, there were no houses nearby with scaffolding and no one saw who left this plank of wood there. Can I claim or is it just bad luck? Anon A: Firstly you need to know about the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB). Every time we all pay motor insurance some of that money goes into a big pot used to pay out to insured motorists who have had an accident with an uninsured or an untraced driver. As you don’t know who owned the scaffolding

plank you could look to bring a claim under the MIB Untraced Drivers’ Scheme. For a claim to be successful you need to prove ‘on the balance of probabilities’ the scaffolding plank came from a vehicle that would have needed insurance. If you haven’t reported the accident to the police, do so immediately. Also, evidence is going to be the key so hopefully you have the car driver’s details so he can give a statement to the MIB. You do need to bear in mind the MIB Untraced Drivers’ Scheme will not usually compensate you for your damaged bike and kit. However it will compensate you for your injuries and other losses that flow from those, i.e. loss of earnings, medical costs etc. While not ideal, it is better than getting nothing.

Practical, economical, reliable but still a whole lotta of fun? That’ll be Kawasaki’s ER-6f Words: Ben Wilkins They used to be men’s machines, 650cc parallel twins. Think Triumph, Norton and the infamous Triton. If the road was long enough, 100mph was within reach. Yet with the advent of the inline fourcylinder, the venerable parallel twin was relegated to the role of commuter machine or for those who’d just passed their test. However, Kawasaki breathed life back into the format in 2006 with its ER-6f. Yes, it’s built for commuting, or perhaps light touring, but the designers included something rather special – the grin factor. There’s a reason it’s one of Kawasaki’s best selling bikes... Engine: The 649cc 180º crank parallel twin puts out its power (a real world measured 66bhp at 8500rpm), in a deceptively progressive manner at low to medium revs. There’s an abundance of torque in the lower half of the rev range, which makes everyday riding, nipping in and out of traffic and accelerating away from the lights easy. However, emissions regulations have had their way with the motor and there’s a lull in the power at 5000rpm, which makes the engine feel a bit flat just where you think it’ll be strong. If you’re at these revs and want to overtake, the best option is to change down a gear. However, let the engine rev through this flat spot and once the needle hits the 6000rpm mark, the motor produces its trump card. It’s at these revs where the bike’s character changes and it becomes a whole heap of fun. For a 650 parallel twin, this really sings when revved and goes from being a mild-mannered commuter to back-road stormer when it’s kept revving. Even with hard riding the ER-6 will return 35mpg and far more with moderate riding. Handling: Budget machines don’t normally provide much in the way of suspension adjustment and the ER does nothing to change that. There’s no adjustment at the front and the offset rear damper unit only offers preload adjustment. Thankfully there’s a reasonable amount of damping and the setup isn’t too squidgy. The forks would benefit from a little more compression damping for spirited dry weather riding but under most conditions they do a pretty good job.

The 160-section rear tyre helps to give the bike a light feel and it’s relatively quick steering, meaning there’s little effort needed to throw it around. It feels a whole lot lighter than the 209kg quoted kerb weight. To put it into context, a Honda Fireblade weighs roughly the same but feels heavier. Ride: The seat is low and the pegs surprisingly high, which gives the feeling of having your legs tucked up underneath you. It’s not what you might expect from what many see as purely a commuter bike. The bars are tall and on the narrow side, which might be an issue for bigger riders but they’re fine for the majority. It’s not a big issue though – a sports bike is far more cramped. We’ve had the opportunity to ride the ABS models in plenty of foul weather and can say that it works rather well. Combined with the progressive lower rev power delivery, the bike feels very surefooted in wet conditions. Equipment: Pillions are reasonably well catered for, with vibration dampening footpegs, side grab handles and a comfortable perch, which isn’t far above the position of the rider. The early models up to 2008 feature dial-type rev counter and speedo along with a fuel warning light and twin trip meters. From the 2009 model the digital readout clock/instrument binnacle includes speed, fuel gauge, low fuel warning light, twin trip meters and a bar style rev counter. The dual headlight model is a distinct upgrade on the single headlight of the 2006-2008 models. Finish: Budget bikes typically don’t have the same level or quality of finish seen on more expensive machines in the range. That said, the ER’s paint is well finished and comes in some rather tasty colours. The welding on the frame can be a bit rough in places and, along with the swingarm, has been known to rust. Model history: Introduced in 2006, the ER-6f, and its unfaired brother the ER-6n, replaced the ageing but popular ER-5. The bike was updated with bodywork (twin headlight fairing, new clocks, taller tank, etc.), and a new frame for the 2009 model. The 2012 model was again revamped with a complete cosmetic makeover along with new instruments and more power and torque from the motor.

What to check: Clutch slip is a frequent owner gripe but is commonly due to an incorrectly adjusted cable or the use of a non-bike specific oil, although some owners have fitted stronger clutch springs to alleviate the issue. The sidestand switch can short out due to water ingress and cause the engine to stop as if the sidestand is down. The frame cracking around the front right engine mount isn’t common but it is known. Kawasaki says it’s due to poor quality or incorrectly installed crash protection, but owners say the frame mount needs spacing/shimming to prevent stress on the mount. A common problem is fairing ‘buzz’ or vibration, for which Kawasaki has issued a warranty fix to eliminate the problem. Three overall pros: Good fuel economy, keenly priced second-hand and a great engine. Three overall cons: No centrestand, non-adjustable suspension and not particularly powerful compared to four-cylinder machines. Value for money: The best value machines with the lowest mileage are the 2011 bikes. They can be had for £3000 off the price of a new bike but with less than a few thousand miles on the clock, and you’re still getting the 2009-onwards updated model. Servicing/maintenance: Minor services including oil/filter are every 7500 miles (or every 12 months), and major services with valve clearance checking/adjustment are every 15,000 miles. Insurance: Lexham Insurance quotes the following on a 2009 Kawasaki ER-6f: 25-year-old in Derby (riding for three years, three years no claims) TPF&T: £357.88 (£500 excess) Fully comprehensive: £653.38 (£200 excess) 42-year-old in London (three points for speeding, riding 15 years, nine years no claims) TPF&T: £175.64 (£350 excess) Comp: £279.27 (£350 excess)

Four-time world motocross champion Dave Thorpe opened his Honda school earlier this year, with the intention of passing on knowledge to those who dream of bettering their off-road skills. For people like me, I guess, which is probably why I felt so at home from the moment I arrived at his Welsh-based training centre. I slotted in among a group of 10 other pupils, who’d also signed up for the day’s special ‘taster’ experience. Motocross and enduro riding was to make up our event’s agenda, tutored by eight-time British motocross champion Stephen Sword. Having only just retired from professional racing, Stephen’s new role as the school’s head coach meant he was responsible for analysing and instructing riders on how to improve in technique and performance. Assisting him was fellow pro dirt rider Dickie Dye. Teas and bacon baps demolished, our tutors rounded us up to go through the plan for our scheduled eight hours of riding. The morning was to focus on enduro riding, with the afternoon purely motocross. But before we went

anywhere, we first had to be introduced to our bikes. The centre’s car park was littered with gleaming new Hondas. For the advanced guys, there was the option of arm-wrenching CRF450Xs, while CRF250Ls catered for riders at the other end of the spectrum. I slotted in somewhere in between, taking the reins of a CRF250X. Kitted up, the instructors fired our bikes to let them warm up, before giving us a final prep talk and ensuring we all were comfortable with our machines. Spaced a few bike lengths apart, we headed out of the centre’s compound and along a shale track. A mile or so on, outrider Dickie veered into some heathland and led us towards the woods we were set to play in. Following through ruts and gullies, the initial experience was slow and technical work, but it was also great fun. By the time we’d reached our destination, most of us were already beaming from ear-to-ear and the day hadn’t even properly started. The centre’s woodlands stretch some 35km. To get used to its loose gravel and rocks, Dickie first got us riding around its

www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk larger tracks, gradually increasing the pace and our confidence. When he felt we were ready, narrower tracks were introduced, along with deep puddles and tree routes. There was no pressure to impress, but support was given to ensure we all tackled the obstacles as properly as possible. Being told the correct body positioning made a huge difference to a lot of the guys, while others struggled to figure which gear best suited what. For every question there was an answer and before every individual challenge there was a brief from Stephen and Dickie. Possibly the most daunting that morning was a steep climb up a loose rock face. Demos from the pros showed us the ascent was doable, while verbal encouragement spurred us onwards, pushing fears aside. Setting off in first, we were told to hook second after the initial climb and lean back to ensure we had weight over the back wheel to prevent it from spinning. It was no oil painting, but sure enough we all made it up the quarter-mile climb, before returning

back down under engine braking and a balance of front and rear brake. With that challenge out of the way, everything else seemed easy. The remaining few hours covered everything from super deep puddles to bogs, nadgery woodland trails to small jumps. It was an awesome experience, made better by the provided lunch and a cup of tea back at camp. Energy restored, Stephen took control of the afternoon, where I upgraded my 250X for a 250R. A stone’s throw from the centre’s compound is its purpose-built motocross track. A good mile in length, it’s liberally sprinkled with tight berms, fast downhill sections and a generous sprinkling of jumps. The surface is hardpacked and after a few laps led by Stephen, we were encouraged to ride at our own pace while learning the track. The informative 250R was a treat to use and the perfect tool to learn on. Time spent one-on-one with Stephen helped me to progress no end, learning how best to tackle berms, which gear to select and how to optimise my downhill braking.

them. We were told to park up off-track, parallel with the mounds, while Dickie and Stephen took it in turn to give flying demos. What a sight. Of course, the reality of our efforts was a tad less entertaining when it came our turn to try

what they’d taught us. But every one of us made solid progress, as we’d done all day. It felt a truly rewarding experience and one I’d highly recommend to others wishing to have a top laugh and learn key off-road skills. ❱

Stephen Sword What prompted your decision to stop racing? I’d always planned to throw in the towel at the end of this season, so it was more a case of stopping a little sooner than I thought I would. The motocross specific day, on a Honda CRF250X, is better suited to beginners (£150). There is also the option of one-to-one motocross training with Steve Sword, again riding Honda CRF250Xs (£250). Then there’s the taster day, where you’ll get to sample both motocross (CRF250X/R) and trials (Montessa) in the morning, before focusing on enduro (CRF250X) in the afternoon (£199). The final option is a full day of enduro riding (CRF250X) where you’ll make the most of the school’s 35km of woodland, bogs, hills and rocks (£199). Should I have ridden off-road before? No. Riders of all abilities are accepted and encouraged to participate. As long as you’ve ridden a motorcycle before, the school will be able to cater the best day

With its genuine dualpurpose abilities and attractive price tag, it’s no surprise Honda’s CRF250L is a popular entry-level enduro machine

Released to the public early last year, this road-legal machine features a 250cc, single-cylinder motor which makes 23bhp and 16lb-ft of torque. In old money, that translates to a top speed of 70mph and enough torque to make considered overtakes. On the road, the ride’s a firm one and the Honda’s OE knobblies can make you feel even more uncomfortable. It’s far from ideal but, if you’re not tackling a 200-mile

It’s supported by decent suspension each end, that’s only flawed by its inability to tune. On the whole, it offers good feedback and is well suited to the typically mild mannered terrain that you’d find on a trail, but do expect to come down with a bump if you get this bike airborne. A key strength of the CRF250L is its lightweight feel. At just 144kg, it’s a doddle to hustle around on the dirt. And to pick it back up again, for that matter. Do that a few times and you’ll be even more grateful the bike comes as standard with electric start. There are other enduro / dual purpose bikes out there, but you’ll struggle to find one as capable and road registered for this price.

Brackley Bike Festival

Sunday, August 18 This annual festival will again see the whole of the town centre packed with racing motorcycles and fans in an atmosphere more reminiscent of the Isle of Man than a small town in South Northamptonshire. There will be a full paddock of racing machinery in front of the Town Hall and a High Street short circuit for parading at pace. Dave Bedlington will be bringing along the actual 500cc four-cylinder MV Agusta that Phil Read rode to the world championship in 1974. Also promised is an ex-Kenny Roberts Yamaha 500 ‘four’ from 1980, part of the collection of Grand Prix two-stroke enthusiast, Chris Wilson, as well as one of the fearsome ‘Green Meanie’ KR750 Kawasaki triples from the days of Formula 750 that is now owned by John Hackett. More awesome twostrokes will be on hand courtesy of Lloyd Dickinson, who will bring two 1990s Marlborough Yamaha GP500 vee-fours (one with a ROC chassis) and a new Ducati Panigale superbike racer.

There is also a special line-up of TT historical bikes led by David Hailwood on the 250cc four-cylinder raced by his famous father, Mike, and now owned by Ron Mullins. Honda 600 Supersports bikes raced on the Island by Joey Dunlop will be brought along by John Harris and there will be two bikes that were ridden by David Jefferies on hand – the TAS Suzuki owned by Mike West

and the special Yamaha R7 with R1 engine that is part of the Philip Morris collection. As well as the classic racers in action there will be modern racing and road bikes on show plus further displays of classics, custom bikes and off-road bikes. Event starts at 10am.
