IT’S EASY to take riding for granted, but many disabled motorcyclists can end up believing that biking is a thing of the past. It doesn’t have to be. In April 2011, The Bike Experience (www.tbex.co.uk) was formed by paralympian Talan Skeels-Piggins, along with his friend Russ O’Neil to teach disabled riders how to ride again in a safe environment. The idea was born after Talan was paralysed from the chest down, thinking he’d be unable to ride again. Eight years later, Talan was racing bikes, and wanted to teach others to rediscover the joy of riding on two-wheels too. Since starting the project, it’s become a registered charity and has helped nearly 100 disabled motorcyclists get back on, with many now taking part on track days or riding on the road.
Modified machines
There are currently four bikes on the fleet – each specially modified – including a Suzuki SV650, a GSXR 600 and two Aprilia Manas. Having this range means that there’s always a suitable machine that a participant can use, no matter their disability.
“The modifications are done by trial and error to find what works and what doesn’t. We minimise what we do to the bike so that we can make people as independent as possible,” said Talan. The GSX-R600 was the bike of choice for Mark Ormrod, former Royal Marines Commando, who, incredibly, has learnt to ride using just his left arm with the help of TBEX. Mark lost both his legs above the knee, and his right arm after stepping on an improvised explosive device on Christmas Eve 2007 during a foot patrol in Afghanistan. In a coma for three days, and after months of intensive rehabilitation he was given prosthetic limbs. The horrific injuries Mark sustained changed his life, but he was determined they wouldn’t define it… Within a day, Mark was riding the GSX-R incredibly fast at Silverstone: he changed gear via two buttons on the left handlebar, which shared space with the throttle, clutch and front brake. The pegs were modified using bicycle toe clips and Velcro to stop Mark’s feet from slipping out. You can watch a video of Mark’s incredible achievement at MoreBikes.co.uk: just search on the homepage for ‘TBEX’ or scan the QR code with your smartphone. For riders who are unable to put their feet down when they stop, a twoperson launch crew supports the bike and prevents it from toppling over.
Simon Thompson, 25, from Southampton is currently training to be an instructor with The Bike Experience: “I’ve been riding for three years, although only two months of that was on the road. I’m paralysed from the belly button down, but Talan happened to be visiting the centre where I was undergoing rehabilitation… 10 months later I was back on a bike. I doubt I still would have done it without Talan and The Bike Experience. By being an instructor, I can give people the same freedom. It’s a fantastic thing to be involved in… it’s great to see people’s faces when they ride again.” Paul Williams, from Doncaster, lost his right leg nine years ago, but that wasn’t going to stop him from getting
back on to two wheels, “I didn’t think I’d be riding round like I have been today. I’m hooked – I’ve already got another session booked next month. When bikes are in your system, they never leave.”

Motorbike robbers lose own motorbike! WHEN a group of robbers stole a motorcycle from a man in Jakarta, Indonesia, they made a fatal error… by forgetting to take their own bike with them! The four robbers arrived on three bikes before forcing the man to give up his bike. They then sped away on three bikes… apparently unaware they left one of their own bikes at the scene of the crime. The victim took the bike to the local police to track down the robbers, who now face up to seven years in prison.

MORE riders want to give off-road riding a try
THE Motorcycle Off-Road Experience (MORE) saw hundreds of riders trying dirt bikes for the first time at the AMCA’s (Amateur Motor Cycle Association) Bevercotes motocross track. The figures are still being compiled for the 400 people who attended, riding bikes from Suzuki, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Honda and KTM, but the same event last year saw a huge 97% saying they wanted to do more off-road riding. Mark Baker, who rode a KTM Freeride 350: “I’ve had a licence over 30 years, and got back into riding in October last year when my son got a 125. Some friends go greenlaning, but I wasn’t very confident, so my lad booked us on this, and I’m glad he did – it’s awesome!” Chris Moody said: “It was brilliant – one of the best things
I’ve ever done on two wheels. Getting that bit of air… wow. I’ve never ridden off-road before, but that brings so much smiling. My face is aching!” It’s not just bikers trying a different style of riding – Andrew Davies had never ridden a bike at all before: “I got on brilliant… my first time on a bike and I learnt on a 250. Using the gears, I didn’t drop it once. I would love to ride a motorbike again.” Keep an eye on www.MoreBikes.co.uk for announcements of the next Motorcycle Off-Road Experience, and check out our feature on page 33. Ariel confirms new Ace
THE manufacturer of the Atom sports car, Ariel, has announced the Ace – its first bike in almost 50 years. The company expects to build 100-150 machines each year at the Somerset factory, with orders already being taken for the first production run at the start of 2015. Using a 1237cc V4 Honda VFR engine (with or without the automatic Dual Clutch Transmission), the bike will be tailored to each customer’s requirements, offering them everything from a low-riding cruiser to a naked or even super-sports bike. “The first photos show just two different possibilities of specification for the bike,” said Simon Saunders, director of Ariel, “but the combinations are nearly endless, and we plan to continue to add further options in the future. Once we understand what a customer wants, whatever it is, we can build the bike they need.”
Sections of the frame are machined from solid billets of aluminium (which takes over 70 hours) before being welded and anodised in a choice of colours. The head angle can be tuned using interchangeable eccentric bearing holders, and can be altered when the bike is serviced. Each bike will be handbuilt by just one Ariel technical in an individual bay, with prices starting at around £20,000. Owners will be able to return their machines to the factory, where upgrades, modifications and new options can be fitted to change a bike whenever they want. For more images, and the full story go to www.MoreBikes.co.uk and search for ‘Ariel Ace’.

FINES for speeding and other offences could be increased to £10,000 under proposals being considered by the Government. Justice Minister Jeremy Wright said financial penalties “set at the right level” were an effective punishment for offenders, adding: “Magistrates are the cornerstone of our justice system and these changes will provide them with greater powers to deal with the day-to-day offences that impact their local communities.” Rupert Lipton, director of the National Motorists Action Group, described the proposals as “disproportionate and draconian”. The maximum fine for riding without a helmet could increase from £500 to £2000.

Could you help the blood bikers? A TWO-WHEELED emergency service that ferries vital medical supplies across an East Midlands county is looking for new volunteers to help it expand. The Lincolnshire Emergency Blood Bikes Service (LEBBS) is becoming well known for helping to save lives. Three of the county’s main hospitals – Lincoln, Boston and Grantham – rely on the charity’s volunteers, who guarantee pick-up within the hour. “Commercial couriers or taxis just can’t offer that kind of reliability,” says charity treasurer and bike rider Martin Wright. “Plus, they can be expensive, whereas we offer a completely free service.”
Operating from 7pm on Friday until 7am on Monday, the group covers the hours when the NHS’s own couriers are unavailable. All it takes is a phone call for the bikers to deliver anything from blood and medication to test results and X-rays. “We currently pick up from Lincoln, Boston and Grantham hospitals, but we’ll drop off anywhere we’re asked to – sometimes as far afield as Leeds or Sheffield,” says Martin. Since it was set up in April 2013, LEBBS has also carried out more than 150 deliveries, and now has 80 volunteers to its name. But their goal is always to do more: “We’d love to cover all of the
First electric Harley-Davidson bike is revealed
HARLEY-Davidson has been canvassing opinion about an electric bike under the name ‘Project LiveWire’. The bike is not yet being offered for sale. The company’s president and chief operating officer, Matt Levatich, said: “America at its best has always been about reinvention. And, like America, Harley-Davidson has reinvented itself many times in our history.” This new bike blends the company’s styling with the latest technology to deliver a new expression of the signature Harley-Davidson look, sound and feel. “Project LiveWire is more like the first electric guitar – not an electric car,” said Mark-Hans Richer, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Harley-Davidson Motor
Company. “It’s an expression of individuality and iconic style that just happens to be electric. “The sound is a distinct part of the thrill. Think fighter jet on an aircraft carrier. Project LiveWire’s unique sound was designed to differentiate it from internal combustion and other electric motorcycles on the market.” Longer term retail plans for Project LiveWire will be influenced by feedback from riders along the tour.
county’s hospitals, expanding to cover Grimsby and Scunthorpe and in the future to the south, but we’re limited by only having four motorbikes,” explains Martin. “We’d also like to deliver emergency breast milk. Just a few millilitres can save a premature baby’s life, but we’ll need to invest in some specialist equipment to do that.” As a charity, LEBBS depends on donations, as Martin explains: “It’s always a panic to wonder if we’ll get enough money to cover our costs. The insurance of our vehicles alone is £465 a month.” Just as important as donations is the gift of someone’s free time, and

Join 125cc and new rider event for charity
A CHARITY rideout with a difference is being organised by P&H Motorcycles in Crawley, West Sussex. The ride is to Brighton on August 24, 2014, and is especially aimed at 125cc bikes and new riders (but all riders are welcome). With goody bags from KTM and Honda, plus a special prize draw for VIP hospitality for two at Brands Hatch British Superbikes, there’s lots on offer. KTM UK has lent the dealership 10 new RC125 machines – among the first on the road – to lead the ride, which will take in a fun, rural route on the Help 4 Harry fun ride, with proceeds going towards the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign and IIH UK (Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension).
The Help 4 Harry Fund was set up by Sue and Tom Barnley for their son Harry, who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, to raise vital funds for the charity. A small registration fee of just £10 gets the fundraising started, and all riders receive an event pack, goody bags and a chance to win a host of exciting prizes. Putting in the miles with the kit that matters
Caberg Duke helmet
£144.99 | www.cabergcares.co.uk | 01384 413841 | Tested by Carli Ann Smith COMMUTING on the bike means making plenty of stops at petrol stations – my Caberg Duke has stopped me getting shouted at for not removing my helmet, as I simply flip it up by pushing the large button at the front. It has good ventilation to stop me from overheating, and the removable liner means I can quickly dry out the lining if it gets soaked through in a thunderstorm – something I’ve had to do a few times! This’ll also make it easier to wash out after the summer. The visor has a quick-release system which makes cleaning it, and installing the provided clear pinlock anti-fog insert quick and simple. There’s a snazzy integrated sun visor too, which is brought down using a slider on top of the lid to keep the glare out of my eyes. I usually prefer double-D ring fasteners, but I’m now a convert. The ‘micrometric’ fastener – a strap with ratchet notches which you push in and then flip a lever to release – allows me to get a tighter fit than with a belt-buckle style clasp as I can do it up in small steps. For under £150, I think this is a great piece of kit, and carries a spec worthy of a lid costing double the price. It scores the maximum five
stars in the SHARP helmet testing process too. It’s available in sizes XS-XL in a variety of matt and gloss designs – MoreBikes.co.uk stickers not included!
knox DefenDer Shirt
£179.99 | www.planet-knox.com | 01900 825825 | Tested by John Milbank AS I write this review, I’m having to lift my right arm on to the desk to get my hand on my keyboard. Sitting in the back garden is my Yamaha WR250F with a twisted wheel and bent metalbraced handguards. Hitting a deep hole at about 40mph on an off-road track two days ago saw me flip over the bike, land on my outstretched arm, and drive the handlebar into my chest. If I hadn’t been wearing this shirt, I’m convinced I’d have broken some ribs, so thank you Knox. The ‘rotator cuff’ injury I have to my shoulder couldn’t have been avoided with any protection, as the impact was transferred from my palm, right up to the top of my arm. Luckily it’s a fairly minor muscle tear, and I didn’t break my collarbone. However, the tough chest protector that comes with the shirt did, I’m sure, save me from a lot more pain.
The mesh fabric shirt also carries Knox’s highest performance ‘Extreme Armour’, protecting the back, shoulders and elbows. Stretch panels and a soft leather collar mean it’s a snug, but extremely comfortable fit that keeps all the CE Level 2 approved protection just where it needs to be. Getting it off can be a little tricky after a hot and sweaty ride, but it’s only a real problem when you’ve just smashed your arm into the ground and winded yourself – then it helps to have a friend pull the sleeves off your shaking limbs. Riding an off-road bike can be a very cheap way to have a lot of fun (as long as you don’t ride beyond your limits), but don’t scrimp on your protective equipment. The Defender should last a long time, and I will never ride a dirt bike without it.

TomTom RideR
I ALWAYS believed that bikes should have the minimum of fussy tech on them – for me, riding is about freedom, so the last thing I wanted was something telling me what to do; more buttons to press; and extra clutter on my machine. I’ve changed. I do a lot of miles now for work. Of course, riding to meetings means travelling for business is still a pleasure, but when time’s tight and you’re stuck in traffic half way across the country, trying to claw at the next page of directions shoved in a tank bag isn’t my idea of fun. I relented, fitted a TomTom to my Z1000SX, and now every journey is sorted out for me by a well-spoken lady hiding behind a waterproof, 4.3in screen.

I found it easy to wire the supplied charging dock into the bike as it has a built-in fuse, so can be connected straight to the battery. The RAM mounting kit should fit pretty well any bike out of the box, and the TomTom’s built-in battery lasted over five hours in testing when out of the cradle, making programming before a ride easy (or even finding your way around streets off the bike). The touch screen works very well with any gloves on, and destinations are easy to add. The button graphics for letters carry three characters each, which makes it a little more laborious to tap in an address, but it’s an excellent compromise in order to keep the ‘buttons’ big enough to be operable with winter gloves. Plus you can switch to a QWERTY or ABCD keyboard if you prefer. Glancing down at the display, it’s easy to see exactly where you need to go – only when the bright sun is directly behind you is the screen not as clear. The distance to the next turn is obvious, so you know how long you can forget about checking it for. The map can be viewed in 2D or 3D, and I find the 3D is a great way of understanding the route ahead. A quick tap while riding will bring up options to go straight
KRiega R30 RucKsacK PAY £139 for a rucksack? Some would say that’s pricey, but based on previous Kriega experience I’d say a bargain at twice the price. My old R25 (the number stands for litres capacity) was, er, ‘borrowed’ from a colleague in 2005 and has covered at least 100,000 miles since, probably closer to 150,000. In all that time nothing has broken, nothing has frayed, nothing even looks like it has even worn. It is still as waterproof as it ever was and all the zips, straps and buckles work like new. That’s impressive because I don’t look after my things particularly well (all in the name of objective testing, you understand). I was going to use
home; find fuel; look up a recent destination or avoid a roadblock. This can also be customised, allowing you to add from a large choice of helpful ‘buttons’. Pair the Rider with a Bluetooth headset and it transforms the way you use it. Linked to my Vertix Raptor, I rarely, if ever need to look at the display, with directions being fed into my ear when necessary. The speed camera alerts are also incredibly accurate, correctly identifying the gantries on the M1 and M25 that have the traps on them. It’s also simple to link your phone and control it from the TomTom, so if you do want people to be able to get hold of you on the bike, making a connection isn’t going to cause too much of a distraction. Then there’s the option to plan a winding route – the unit will look for more twisty minor roads, at the expense of journey time, to get you off the motorways and on to the twisties. It works a treat, and has three levels of twistiness, from roads so tight they’re best suited to a supermoto, through to faster, more open routes that are great for a sportsbike and my Kawasaki Z1000SX – all avoiding the cluttered major roads. You can also choose, plan and share your routes on the bundled TyrePro software (worth

some cliché like ‘if Carlsberg made rucksacks’, but the truth is that this is much better than that. Suffice to say that if Kriega made lager it’d probably taste a damn sight better than Carlsberg. That’s how much I rate its kit. The R30 is a different design to the R25. The Quadloc buckles are slightly less chunky, but easier to use and the clever design still spreads the weight much more evenly than other sacks, making heavy loads feel floaty-light. This one has a roll top and buckle fasteners to replace the R25’s zip as a way of getting in, which gives much easier access for bulky loads and should be just as waterproof. ★ MCM STAR LETTER OF THE MONTH ★
A big thank you for the training
Are you wearing the right kit?
I have been riding for 49 years and still enjoy it even now, but always wear the correct clothing. When I was younger I did the same daft things as anybody else does, but over the years I’ve seen how riders fare by not wearing the proper clothing, which brings me to why I am writing to you. In the July 14 paper I was reading the bike tests and saw that Carli Ann Smith was wearing trainers and jeans instead of boots and leathers, which give her no protection in a spill, god forbid it ever happens! Please ask her to wear the proper clothing and she will be protected to become an elderly rider in many years to come, just like me. Chas Clarke
I just wanted to say thank you for the fantastic prize I won (March 2014 issue) to do Level 1 and 2 at the California Superbike School at Silverstone with R&G and MCM. I had two brilliant days and learned a huge amount that will help to keep me safe on the roads as well as stand me in good stead if I do a trackday. The school is very friendly and well structured, and they put my mind at rest as I was very nervous, the instructors are very encouraging and happy to let you go at your own pace and gradually build your skills during the day at each level. There were all sorts of bikes, from R1s and Fireblades to a BMW GS, an Aprilia 650 superscoot, a Yamaha FJR and my Triumph Tiger 800 to name but a few, with riders of all ages. I would recommend it to anyone. You never stop learning and any skills to help you improve your cornering, forward vision and anticipation can only be a good thing so the crash protection available from R&G is hopefully never used! Thank you all so much.

Hi Chas... It’s nice to know you’re looking out for me! I completely agree about wearing the correct protection on the bike – it’s really important to me and I always make sure I have the proper gear on – plus my mum would go mad if I wasn’t protected! Even though I might look as if I have no protection on my bottom half, I do. The jeans are Bull-It jeans and have Covec inside – www.bull-it.com – which offer much more protection than regular jeans in terms of abrasion and impact resistance, and also heat dissipation. The boots I have on are made by TCX and are CE approved – www.tcxboots.com – they’re waterproof too which comes in handy. I reviewed the boots in the March issue, or you can read about them at MoreBikes.co.uk – just search for ‘TCX boot’. TCX does a men’s version too, obviously without the pink laces... Thanks again for getting in touch and glad you enjoy the paper! Carli Each month, our star letter will receive a six month subscription to their choice of one of our fantastic motorcycle magazines!
Now who’s going to wave at me?
I had to sell my 750 Yamaha, due to arthritis, and bought a Silver Wing 600 twist-and-go to keep biking. I had to endure a lot of micky taking from my buddies, and was ignored by other bikers when on the road. I now find myself in the opposite situation… for the last 16 months I’ve owned the ‘muscle bike’ of the scooter world. The Aprilia SRV 850 really confuses people, viewed from front or rear; bubble screen, three headlights and
aggressively styled bodywork. The rear end comes to a point with Dorsoduro tail-light and sportbike type indicators; add the chain drive and Arrow can, and people are really confused. It’s only when viewed from alongside that all is revealed. My friends no longer extract the urine, as it’s capable of holding its own in the performance stakes. I wave at everybody but scooter riders don’t wave back as they think I’m on a sportbike! Can’t win can you.

Ducati Monster 821 £8995 | 112bhp @ 9250rpm | 65.9lb-ft @ 7750rpm | 821cc liquid-cooled V-twin Words: Roland Brown Photography: Milagro THE launch of the Monster 821 is a big deal for Ducati, but nowhere near as important as the introduction of the very similar looking M900 Monster that began the naked Italian V-twin family’s story back in 1993. Since then more than 290,000 Monsters have been sold, in a wide variety of engine capacities, helping to keep Ducati healthy through good times and bad. The Monster 821 has similar capacity to that original M900, and Ducati has made sure that it shares the old model’s V-twin character as well as its look. But the new bike, based on the recently released Monster 1200, is very much a new generation Monster: liquid-cooled; considerably more powerful than the air-cooled Monster 796; and much more sophisticated, incorporating ride-by-wire throttle, multiple riding modes, traction control and ABS brakes.
Tell me about the engine
Relatively little engine development was required for this Monster because it’s powered by the dohc eight-valve V-twin desmo unit that was introduced last year in the Hypermotard and Hyperstrada. The Testastretta 11º lump is mechanically unchanged apart from incorporating Ducati’s APTC clutch, which gives a slipper action and a very light feel at the lever. The 821cc motor has fairly longstroke dimensions (at 88 x 67.5mm, its
bore is 8mm narrower than the 1200’s but stroke is just 0.4mm shorter) and is impressively flexible. The Monster’s output is slightly higher than the Hypermotard’s due to a larger airbox and new exhaust system with longer, equal length header pipes. This gives a slight boost all the way through the range, to a 2bhp higher maximum of 112bhp at 9250rpm. The Monster 821 follows the 1200 in having three riding modes, selectable by pressing the indicator button. Sport and Touring deliver the full output, the latter with softer response; Urban is softer again to a reduced 75bhp maximum. Even that reduced figure is not far short of the maximum of the 803cc air-cooled Monster 796. Compared with that bike the 821’s torque curve is almost identical from 6-6500rpm but considerably higher both below and above that range.
What’s the chassis like?
Most of the chassis comes straight from the Monster 1200. There are no changes to the tubular steel frame, which adds rigidity and saves weight (compared with the previous Monster 796 frame) by bolting front and rear sections directly to the engine in Panigale style. But there are a few differences, notably the new aluminium swingarm that is twin- instead of single-sided, and 30mm shorter than the 1200’s; partly because the less powerful
First ride 17 bike can get away with a shorter, 1480mm wheelbase. The 821 is a few kilos lighter, at 205.5kg wet, and also has a narrower, 5.50in rear wheel shod with a 180instead of 190-section rear tyre. Suspension set-up is fairly basic, similar to that of the base model 1200, with non-adjustable, 43mm Sachs USD forks up front. The same firm’s rear shock is operated directly by the swingarm, has a dual-rate spring and is adjustable for preload and rebound damping. The 821’s one-piece handlebar is made from steel instead of the 1200’s aluminium but the riding position is identical, thanks also to an unchanged seat that is wider, longer and better padded than previous Monster seats, and can be adjusted to be either 785 or 810mm high. Braking follows the standard 1200 model’s format, with 320mm front discs and Brembo radial Monobloc calipers, though the 821 doesn’t get the 1200’s radial master cylinder. Ducati’s ‘Safety Pack’ of ABS brakes and eight-level traction control comes as standard.
Should I buy one?
If you fancy a Monster and have previously been put off either by the old model’s lack of practicality or the new 1200’s price, then the 821 could

just be the bike that breaks your resistance. It has plenty of the Italian style and appealing V-twin character that have long made Monsters popular, plus a blend of refinement, comfort and practicality that most of the previous models didn’t even approach. Equally importantly the 821 follows Ducati’s 899 Panigale by offering most of the benefits of a larger model, in this case the Monster 1200, with a more accessible character and price. At £8995 (or £8795 for the Dark model, which has matt black paint and no pillion seat cover) it’s not particularly cheap, being closer in price to the 1200 than to the entry-level Monster 696. But it’s one of the most complete and best value Ducati models yet, and an excellent reason to join the multitude of riders who’ve bought a Monster already.
So what’s it like to ride?
It’s very entertaining and involving; and also more comfortable and practical than you might imagine. That’s true from the moment you throw a leg over the low seat and start the engine, which fires up with a thunderous exhaust note from the side-by-side silencers. Ducati has done a great job with that and also with the fuelling, which is very crisp, helping to make the Monster easy to ride in traffic, especially in Urban mode. The 821cc V-twin is impressively flexible, and the Monster is docile and smooth, even when you rev it towards the 11,000rpm limit through the gears. There’s enough top-end power for plenty of excitement. On open roads the Ducati sat smoothly at 90mph and stormed briefly to 115mph, heading for a top speed of about 140mph while I failed to find much escape from the wind, and held tight to the raised

handlebar, which is slightly higher and further back than the Monster 796’s. Ride quality was pretty good, the suspension giving a taut, reasonably firm feel while soaking up bumps with notably more efficiency than Monsters of a few years ago. Hard riding on the twisty Futa pass near Bologna, where Ducati develops most of its bikes, occasionally had the 821 moving around slightly in bumpier bends, but it gave plenty of feedback and steered very precisely. The Brembo brake system is superbly powerful, and well backed up by the Bosch ABS system. The rear disc was typically lacking in feel but the ABS meant there was no worry about locking it up. The 821s electronic features are arguably the biggest difference between this bike and most previous Monsters, and mostly in a good way. The traction control system is a bit tricky to turn off if you want to pull wheelies, but like the ABS it was especially welcome in the wet. The LCD instrument panel is less eyecatching than the 1200s classy coloured display but still shows fuel consumption and range to empty, incorporates a lap timer and shift light, and is adjustable for brightness. More importantly, Ducati has got the Monster’s basics well sorted. Its
riding position is roomy; controls work smoothly; even the mirrors are useful. The 17.5-litre tank should be good for over 150 miles at a typical average of 45mpg or more. The seat was respectably comfortable, and removing its colour-matched pillion seat cover (standard fitment, except with the matt black Dark model) reveals a reasonably, if not generously, sized pillion seat with grab-handles alongside. The Monster 821 is certainly a much more sophisticated and practical bike than its ancestor the M900, and even the much more recent 796. Equally importantly, it also manages to match the old air-cooled model’s raw V-twin character and sound. And if that sounds as though you’re getting the best of both worlds, that’s just about right. Despite its middleweight status the 821 is very much a grown-up Monster, and arguably the best one so far.

“We think the 821 is the perfect first bike for all Monsteristi, and also riders of the current 1100 will love it because it is agile, very easy to ride, but also has all the power that you need. “The maximum horsepower is more or less the same as we had in the past with the Monster S4, a real muscular, naked, aggressive strong bike for experienced riders. And now we have this performance on a bike that is very easy to ride. This is due to the electronics and the technology, which gets better and better. “Our target was to have the same feeling as the original Monster. The 821 had to be agile for the Futa because this is the perfect road for the Monster, but also for the city because a lot of Monster riders use their bike there. They go to the pub in the evening or to the office in the morning, and at the weekend they ride the roads in the hills. “The exhaust is quite loud but it’s fully homologated, obviously. The decibels are the same as the 1200 but the 821 is different because its tone is quite aggressive. Making the bike sound good was one of our targets because we think that the voice of the engine is part of the fun.”

EBR 1190RX £13,998 | 185bhp @ 10,600rpm | 101lb-ft @ 8200rpm | 1191cc liquid-cooled V-twin Tested by: Roland Brown Photography: Stuart Collins YOU could never accuse Erik Buell of being a quitter. Less than five years after Buell was dramatically shut down by its parent company HarleyDavidson, as the credit crunch hit, the man who had founded the firm and still ran it is back with a new business, Erik Buell Racing, and a new bike: the 1190RX. The initials EBR on its tank are new but there’s something familiar about the lean super-sports bike with its thick aluminium frame spars and large, perimeter front brake disc. Those features were Buell trademarks, as was a big V-twin engine like the one that powers the RX. And this new generation bike is far more powerful and advanced than any Buell model.
Tell me about the engine
Like the 1125R from the old Buell firm, the RX uses a liquid-cooled, 72º V-twin engine. But instead of being built by Rotax of Austria, it’s now assembled by EBR in Wisconsin, USA, after Erik bought rights and tooling. And it has been dramatically uprated, with updates including controlled swirl induction, by which one titanium inlet valve opens slightly before the other, to enhance combustion. The RX design owes much to EBR’s debut model, a limited-edition sportster called the 1190RS. The firm built and sold around 150 units of the RS over the last couple of years, despite its US $40,000 price. The RX retains its capacity of 1191cc but makes more power and torque, but is less expensive. Its maximum output is 185bhp at 10,600rpm – impressive from a bike with a wet weight of just 190kg.
What’s the chassis like?
Erik Buell’s innovative design thinking has always been most clear in his chassis, and the RX is no exception. In typical Buell fashion it holds 17 litres of petrol in the frame, though the aluminium swingarm, which pivots on the back of the motor, doesn’t follow models such as the Firebolt by doubling as a tank for the dry-sump powerplant’s oil. Instead it operates the diagonally mounted Showa shock directly, with no rising-rate linkage. As always with Buell, the emphasis is on light weight and on keeping it near the centre of the bike. A magnesium rear subframe helps in that regard, as do the lightweight 17in wheels with their slim spokes in cast aluminium. The perimeter disc is also notably light, although the rotor is a dinner-plate-like 386mm in diameter and there’s a hefty eight-pot Nissin caliper to do the biting. Plastic ducts direct cooling air to the caliper around the legs of the Showa big piston forks, which are held by chunky alloy yokes with a transverse steering damper.
Should I buy one?
If you fancy a light and powerful American V-twin sports bike and are open to something exotic and slightly quirky it’s definitely worth considering. At £13,998 (less than the £15,000 previously announced) the RX is far from cheap but it’s competitively priced against the likes of Aprilia’s RSV4 R ABS (£14,132) and Ducati’s base-model 1199 Panigale, which costs £16,250. The RX is more attractive than the last couple of Buell sports bikes, with colour options of red or black as well
as yellow. Finish and build quality also seem well up to scratch. We’d need to put the EBR head-tohead with the Italians and other rivals to get a full picture of its ability. But what can be said confidently is that the 1190RX is not just the fastest and best American sports bike yet, it’s the first one that gives the European aristocrats some genuine opposition. EBR’s European boss Edwin Belonje, formerly of Triumph, is currently putting together a network with a UK base at Donington, and will be appointing the first EBR dealers within weeks.
So what’s it like to ride?
Fast, fine-handling and lots of fun, on the basis of the launch at the Varano circuit in northern Italy, although the damp track meant it wasn’t possible to test either its engine or chassis ability to the full. At least the motor’s grunt and sweet fuelling made it controllable in the slippery conditions. Throttle response was light but very precise. The RX has a traction control system, which was very useful on such a powerful bike. I left it on the recommended rain setting (14 of 21) and it did a good job of keeping the

Erik Buell:The comeback king up for World Superbikes challenge Erik Buell has bounced back in spectacular fashion after the disappointment of Harley’s sudden closure of the bike firm that carried his name. His emotional announcement video, back in 2009, was seen around the world and brought Erik plenty of sympathy. But he’s not the type to sit around moping and had already overcome plenty of setbacks during his career, most notably back in 1986 when the AMA dropped the Formula One racing class, killing the market for Erik’s new RW750. Erik, now 64, considered retirement after Buell’s closure – but not for long. Harley still owned the Buell name but he was free to create a new firm, Erik Buell Racing. He re-employed some former Buell workers, and set about developing and racing a new bike, the 1190RS, as well as doing consultancy work for firms including Hero (the giant Indian bike firm’s long-standing tie with Honda ended in 2010), and which built almost six million bikes last year. “Pawan Munjal, the CEO of Hero MotoCorp, is an engineer, so he really understands the product,” Buell says. “I was introduced by a friend, we talked a number of times and
rear Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa in line on extra-damp patches. Shame there’s no button for changing the setting while riding. A series of change-up-soon lights would also be handy at times but the digital dash is easy to read. The dyno chart shows the engine’s top-end power matched by strong torque throughout the range – it kicks out 80% of its maximum torque figure all the way from 4500rpm to the 11,500rpm redline. So given the RX’s light weight it’s no surprise that it accelerated at a hugely entertaining rate, almost regardless of what the digital tacho was reading. Varano is tight and twisty, so there wasn’t much chance to stretch the bike’s legs towards its claimed top speed of 186mph. But it devoured the short straights at an impressive rate, aided by a six-speed box that worked well but wasn’t fitted with a quick-shifter, surprising for a bike of this quality. The RX does at least have conventional chain final drive, rather than relying on the belts that caused Buell owners some problems. This bike’s only transmission related aggro might be that the slipper clutch has a heavy action that will require a strong left wrist in town. At the other end of the scale, long trips might result in the rider becoming aware of the big twin’s vibration at high revs. I didn’t find vibes a problem on the track but one rider reported numbness from a buzz through the bars. Handling was very neutral and predictable, aided by a reasonably roomy riding position, firm seat, short 1409mm wheelbase, racy steering
he said, ‘I’ve split with Honda, you’ve split with Harley. Why don’t we share some ideas?’” Buell was commissioned by Hero to make a concept bike; a petrol/electric hybrid called the Leap, which was well received. Erik was looking for major investment in order to grow EBR, and his relationship with Hero led to the Indian firm buying a 49.2% stake in EBR last year, for a reported US $25m. The investment has allowed Erik to speed development not only of the 1190RX but also a couple of follow-up models: a naked bike called the 1190SX, due in August, and a dual-purpose 1190AX, which will be unveiled at EICMA late this year for sale in 2015. Work is also well under way on setting up a global network of importers and dealerships. And given former racer Erik’s background, it’s no surprise that EBR is competing in World Superbikes this season, with RXs ridden by American pilots Aaron Yates and Geoff May. With a new bike it’s a steep learning curve, and they won’t be winning races just yet, but you can be sure that EBR and Erik Buell will be up for the challenge.
Typical Buell perimeter discs remain. geometry, and forward-biased weight distribution. That all helped make the bike very flickable through Varano’s slow-speed chicanes, yet it was stable in the faster turns and under acceleration, and very accurate through the long, cambered lefthander towards the end of the lap. There’s plenty of scope for tweaking the multi-adjustable Showa suspension, which gave a wellcontrolled ride in the conditions. The Rosso Corsas did a decent job too, though racing wets would have been more suitable. The RX doesn’t come with ABS yet, though there will be a system available later this year. The big perimeter disc and Nissin combo worked very well in the damp, giving plenty of feel, but it was impossible to say what absolute stopping power was like, or how well those cooling ducts would work to prevent the overheating problems that some Buell models suffered with.

2014 Brammo Empulse R £15,350 | 54bhp @ 4500rpm | 66lb-ft Liquid-cooled electric motor Tested by: John Milbank Photography: Joe Dick IF YOU have an irrational hatred of electric vehicles, you’d best stop reading, because this might upset you: Electric bikes are here to stay, and they’re getting more fun with every new machine. Currently the world’s fastest production electric bike, with a claimed top speed of 110mph, the Brammo Empulse R draws on the technology developed for the Brammo race bike, which has seen a podium finish in the electric class at the Isle of Man TT
Tell me about the engine
The Brammo uses a water-cooled permanent magnet AC motor, developing 54bhp at 4500rpm. Unusually for electric motorcycles, the Empulse has a six-speed gearbox. Besides allowing the motor to deliver a more efficient performance at all speeds, it also gives the ability to use a smaller, and cheaper motor. The coolant and gearbox oil are the only fluids in the bike, and while the ’box takes a little longer to warm up than on a ‘normal’ machine (there’s no combustion to warm the transmission oil) this is a regular 1-down, 5-up setup, complete with a clutch. There’s no need to pull the clutch in before pulling away, and like most bikes, it’s only really needed for downshifts, with clutchless upshifts easy if you just wind off the power for a fraction of a second. Power is supplied by seven battery ‘modules’
to deliver a total of 104v and 9.3kWh. Each module contains 36 Lithium-ion nickel-cobalt manganese cells. Each of these packs contains its own temperature sensor, plus an over- and under-charge circuit. The cases are aluminium, acting as heatsinks, and offering protection in the event of a crash – it certainly seems no more dangerous than sitting with 16 litres of highly explosive fluid between your legs.
What’s the chassis like
The Brammo has an E-beam aluminium frame built by Accossato in Italy (a manufacturer of smallcapacity off-road machines in the 1970s and 80s, and now offering a range of engineering and welding services), along with a tubular steel subframe and swing arm. The bike’s carried on fully adjustable 43mm Marzocchi forks, and an equally tweakable Sachs monoshock. Four-pot Brembo calipers bite on a pair of 310mm front discs, with a dual-piston Brembo unit on a single rear disc. The 213kg of weight is carried well, making for a compact and nimble bike. The electronic dash has a large analogue rev-counter, with a digital display showing speed; gear position; energy consumption; battery status; estimated range and system status.
Should I buy one?
With a claimed city range of 128 miles (the increased braking in town helps
As we went to press, John had arranged to borrow a Brammo for a week to live with. Read the report at MoreBikes.co.uk and search for ‘Brammo’. regenerate power); 58 miles on the open road and 80 miles combined, a fair proportion of the cost of the bike could be recouped in fuel savings. The Empulse R has a built-in 3kW charger, so the machine can be easily charged from any household socket with the included cable. A full charge will take about four hours, which would cost £1.36 according to my electricity bill. With a gallon of fuel costing £5.99, at a range of 80 miles that works out at about the equivalent cost of the bike delivering 352mpg. The built in charger makes the Brammo very versatile and easy to charge anywhere, but it does mean that you can’t speed up the process with a higher powered 7kW public charging point: worth keeping in mind if you have to pay by the hour when using one. Servicing costs should be low, with very little on the bike to maintain besides the transmission oil (which needs replacing every 3000 miles or 6 months), and motor coolant (18,000 miles or 3 years). The bike comes with a two-year warranty, but with five years/50,000 miles on the battery. While a 10-30% loss of capacity is to be expected within this period, it’s still a reassuring addition, and by the time it expires, battery technology is almost certain to have developed, with an associated drop in cost. To get the best out of your battery, the owner’s manual recommends giving a complete charge and discharge cycle every three months,
and leaving the charger connected overnight as much as possible to balance the cells (a process that should use little energy, but only starts after the battery is 99% charged). The UK importers – goingreen.co.uk – say that riding days and test rides are easily available, with the company even offering to bring the machine to you to try if you’re interested.
So what’s it like to ride?
Testing the bike at the Dunsfold ‘Top Gear’ test track, I’ve never felt so confident on a motorcycle in such a short time. The incredibly smooth throttle makes it easy to wind on the power, and within three corners I had my knee down. The riding position is perfect for commuting: easy to flick about but still very comfortable, with a relaxed position to the pegs. If you push the bike harder, the rear brake lever can touch down (according to my Pirelli Diablo Super Biker app, it was at 43.3° of lean), but tucks away easily, and the bike is a long way from being upset. The straights weren’t particularly long on the test-track, so I was unable to get to the claimed 110mph. My smartphone app recorded a maximum of 89.9mph, and while I could easily have gone well past this on a 600cc sportbike, up to normal road speeds the Brammo will be more than happy dicing with petrolpowered bikes and cars. The only difference I found between riding this, and a very smooth petrol bike, is that I kept dropping down too
many gears. By the end of my ride I’d realised that much of the track could be handled with the bike left in fifth and sixth gear: exiting the corners in a higher gear would certainly have seen me achieve a higher top speed, as I’d often look down and realise the motor had reached its maximum revs, so was no longer accelerating. Not being able to hear the engine becoming stressed made it difficult to judge when to change gear, but it’s something that will become much easier after a few miles. The Empulse R has no pretence of being a touring bike – it’s aimed at commuters looking for an enjoyable ride to work and at the weekend. As such, with its excellent handling and great performance up to legal speeds, it’s easy to see a market because, well… it’s bloody good fun.

Crash-proof your bike
Spend dozens of nights beavering away in the garage on your bike, and the last thing you want is for it to get scuffed. John Milbank shows you how easy it is to add a bit of protection to your fairings...
I GOT my CBR for a bargain price of £1200. Granted, it’s taken some work to get it back into tip-top condition, but I love it. A lot. This bike is for scratching around my favourite local twisties, and enjoying on track days. The last thing I want to do is drop it, but if the worst did happen, I want to give the bike the best chance of survival – a lot of effort has gone into it, and I’d like to keep it looking this good for a long time. Besides… original fairings for a 14-year- old bike are hard to find, and bloody expensive! R&G’s crash protectors are built to slide on Tarmac, and not transfer stress to the frame. Careful design and construction makes them easy to fit to most bikes, though some do require the fairing to be drilled to
1
Crash Protectors
1 The standard fairing mounts are easy to remove from the aluminium frame.
2
2 I’m using a medium strength thread-lock that will hold the spacer in place when I need to remove the fairing, but won’t make it impossible to get out if I want to go back to standard.
3
allow the main bolt to pass through and pick up on the strongest part of the frame. Luckily for me, the CBR uses one of the fairing mounting points. Personally, I wouldn’t want to cut my fairing, but crash-bobbins are such a common mod now, they’re unlikely to devalue your bike unless someone is looking for something in totally original condition. I’ve fitted Crash Protectors (£60.42); Bar End Sliders (£27.60) and Fork Protectors (£32.29). Spindle Sliders are also available for £32.39, which pass through the rear axle. However, they’re not suitable for use with the standard exhaust on this machine, and after checking, they would also foul my Pipe Werx can – if in doubt, R&G can always guide you.
4
4 With the bolt passed through and washer fitted, a coating of coppergrease will make it easier to remove the bobbin to get the fairing off.
5
5 Nip the bolt up, and the main Crash Protector is in place.
6
Bar End Sliders
3 The new R&G spacer just needs bolting into the frame now… tight, but don’t strip that aluminium!
6 The original screws are used to hold the new bar-ends in – if the bike’s been down the road before, a coat of paint on these won’t go amiss.
The main bobbins can get in the way of your leg when you stop on the CBR – it’s not a problem at all when riding, but it can be disconcerting when you first drop your leg to the floor. While the bar end sliders should slide better than the original ones, it’s worth bearing in mind that you can pick up OE bar-end weights for about the same price if you’re looking to keep the original style. The R&G parts are slightly lighter, but I’ve not noticed any extra vibration through the bars… and they look great, so I’m happy with them. Hopefully I’ll never have to actually test these protectors out, but I’m very pleased with how they look on the bike, and were a doddle to fit…
7
7 A quick dab of thread-lock again…
8
8 …Then screw the new Bar End Slider into place.
9
10
13
10 If you can’t press it in by hand, a wooden mallet, or a block of wood between the slider and a hammer with see it pop into place.
13 Some copper grease on the new bolt will protect the threads.
11
14
11 Undo the two pinch bolts on the right-hand fork leg…
14 Torque up the new bolt, then bounce the front of the bike up and down a couple of times – this helps the fork leg to settle properly before you tighten the pinch bolts back up.
12
15
12 …Then remove the original front spindle bolt.
15 Finally, bolt on the right-hand slider with a little copper grease. Job done!
Fork Protectors
9 One of the Fork Protectors simply pushes into the left side of the front axle.

Show guide The Carole Nash GreaT sCoTTish show 25
Welcome to the North’s greatest shoW
Modern and classic machines in one superb celebration of biking. IT’S GOING to be the north’s biggest and best biking event, and we want to see YOU there. On August 9-10, Motor Cycle Monthly will be taking over the Royal Highland Centre in Ingliston, Edinburgh to host the Carole Nash Great Scottish Bike Show. With dealers, manufacturers, trade stands, displays, clubs and much more, it’ll be a fantastic weekend for the family, where you can also enjoy Supermoto racing, Moped Mayhem and trials demonstrations – it really is a show for everyone, from classic fans to tourers, adventurers and modern sportbike riders. If that’s not enough, you can meet one of the world’s greatest ever racers: Giacomo Agostini. With 122 Grand Prix victories and 15 World Championship titles, the Italian racer will be talking about his life on two wheels, meeting visitors and presenting awards. Ago is the only man, besides Rossi, to have surpassed 100 GP wins. Accompanying him at the event will

be Alex George, a three-time Isle of Man TT race winner who’s sure to be popular in his native Scotland. Why not make a holiday of your trip? Turn over for some great routes in the area… if you’re travelling from England or Wales, you could take the opportunity to explore the stunning scenery and beautiful roads while you’re here.
IF YOU want the wildest stunt shows, The Isle of Man’s Purple Helmets will be there to entertain with their crazy antics. Watch out for Honda C90 commuter mopeds going where they’ve never gone before; Death-defying stunts in the air, in water and, occasionally, on the ground. Don’t miss the motorcycling piano and the baked bean powered green energy machine! Apparently, these modern-day troubadours sleep together in a large round bed and mostly eat twigs and leaves that they collect from local plantations. None of the Purple Helmets go by their real names; they all have stage names to protect their identities from both women and dentists. During still autumn nights they can often be heard singing each other to sleep, and the orange glow from their peat fire can be seen from many miles away.

26 SHOW GUIDE The Carole Nash GreaT sCoTTish show
Make a holiday of it The Carole Nash Great Scottish Bike show promises to be the north’s best event… Chris Moss has three great rides to do while you’re there. Photos: Chris Moss
GOING to this biking celebration north of the border will give you a chance to see and enjoy plenty, with a huge selection of dealers, manufacturers and traders showing off their wares. And with the chance of meeting racing stars Giacomo Agostini and Alex George, leaving home for the event is easy to justify. But as cracking as the extravaganza will undoubtedly be, there’s something else you can do… ride there and have a look around one of the very best countries for bikes. I’m regularly amazed by the number of riders who tell me they’ve never sampled two-wheeled life north of the border. And I say to them what I’ll say to you now – just get on your bike and go there! Scotland is an absolutely superb place to ride, with many outstanding virtues making it attractive enough to consider before a lot of European regions. The vast majority of riders usually head for the Highlands – an utterly fantastic part of Scotland and a zone easy to warrant travelling to. But for the purpose of visiting the show, it’s just a little too far to be chosen as a riding add-on. However, there is a solution, and it’s sited just to the south west of Edinburgh – the Scottish Lowlands. It’s a captivating area with many elevated routes that are not at all ‘low’. It’s one of biking’s best kept secrets with even quieter roads than the Highlands, especially at this time of the year. There are far more facilities, including petrol stations... and it’s all a bit closer too. A great way to start the investigative proceedings would be to book one or more overnight stays at the unique Buccleuch Arms Hotel (www.buccleucharmshotel.com/biker -friendly/). Based in Moffat, in Dumfries and Galloway, it’s been described as Britain’s most bikefriendly hotel. Now that’s one bold boast. But as it’s run by passionate bikers, serves award-winning food, wines and whiskies, has purpose-built bike garages, can give advice on numerous selected biking routes, and offers discounts for riders, that’s a claim that’s very hard to argue with. Several trusted journos I know have sampled the hotel and spoken very highly of it. Just off the A74(M), 30 miles into Scotland, it sets you up perfectly for a run into the show, just 55 miles distant. However, heading straight for
Edinburgh would be criminal, and with such superb roads and scenery situated nearby you’re better off taking the long way round… Dave Smith, director of the Buccleuch, is a hugely enthusiastic biker and can give exact guidance on routes near his hotel. He can tailor journeys to suit your exact tastes, and even provide an accurate weather forecast to help you adjust your headings to stay dry! He’s as much of a bike tourism expert as he is a hotelier, and everything he and his websites – www.motorcyclescotland.com and www.motogoloco.com – advise and recommend has been personally vetted by the R1200RT owner. We spoke to him about three routes he feels would suit show-goers. Enjoy the show, and enjoy the riding! For more route and accommodation guides go to www.motorcyclescotland and www.motogoloco.com
GALLOWAY QUICKIE 128 miles, 3hours 20 minutes
Leave Moffat and head north on the A701, then turn left on the B719 to cross the A74(M). You’ll then meet and turn right on to the former main road to Glasgow, the B7076, which flows quickly and freely as it runs parallel to the A74(M). The quiet route boasts good views of hills and forests on either side. At the T junction with the A702, turn left and be prepared for a dream route over the spectacular Dalveen Pass. The fantastic riding road is very tight and twisty, climbing up into and through the mountains and delivering spectacular vistas before dropping down to meet the A76. Before you get
there though, you’re advised to visit the majestic 17th century Drumlanrig Castle. Touring its grounds is free, and guided tours cost £10 per adult. Rejoin the A76 and ride south along it for just one mile before turning right back onto the A702. It’s another heavenly, car-free route of a challenging nature that’s quite narrow but very well-surfaced. After joining the A713 at St John’s Town of Dalry head south to run along the east side of Loch Ken. The route continues along a beautiful valley with idyllic views on each side. Once you’ve reached the A75 turn left, then around four miles later turn right on the B794 to Dalbeattie. From there the A710 road winds nicely through the pretty coastal and forested scenery past the dramatic ruins of Sweetheart Abbey, a 13th century monastery which makes for an excellent photo opportunity. Continue to Dumfries, which can be easily bypassed using the A75 which serves as a ring road to join the A701. This route forms the final free-flowing journey back to Moffat.
THE THREE LOCHS RUN 44 miles, 1hour 25 minutes
Leave Moffat and head north on the A701, which begins to twist and undulate shortly after leaving the town. Pleasing views of hills, forests and rivers (including the source of the famous Tweed) distinguish the route. After 19 miles, turn right at Tweedsmuir onto a deserted single track road and ride alongside the Talla reservoir. Running in a deep valley the route is flanked by mountains which provide enough wind shelter for the reservoir to resemble a millpond most of the time. Seeing cars here is very rare, though sheep tend to stroll onto the road, so take care. At the end of the water the road crosses the dam and climbs very steeply. At its summit there’s a great opportunity to take pictures of breathtaking views of the mountains and reservoir below. They’ll serve as a reminder of your trip and something to counter the questionable ‘Lowlands’ label the area has. From this point the road heads towards the Megget reservoir and becomes more challenging with its sharp hairpin turns and sudden elevation changes. It makes for very satisfying riding, but it’s worth slowing down and taking care to enjoy to the full.
When you arrive at the T-junction with the A708 turn right to run along St Mary’s Loch. It’s a good time to take a break at the Glen Cafe sited halfway along the shore of the water. The bikefriendly proprietor Kath loves to chat about bikes and can refresh you with food and drink as you absorb the Loch’s beautiful surrounding views. Once fortified, the road back to Moffat finishes the short loop pleasurably with fine images each side of the winding and undulating carriageway. It’s a fantastic riding road that’s not too intense, allowing you to enjoy all it has.
THE BORDERS LOOP 102 miles, 2hour 35 minutes
Head south on the A701 from Moffat past Beattock and then join the freeflowing, well-surfaced B7076 which runs parallel to the A74(M). It’s a flat route that’s easy to make good progress along and features pretty pastureland and forestry along its borders. At Lockerbie, turn left onto
the B7068. The deserted route soon becomes a heaven-sent gift to motorcycling with fantastic sinuous roads and superb views enjoyed by all who use it. Its scenic thrills continue along to Langholm where you meet the A7. Turning north to the Borders towards Hawick needs care. The road itself is safe, but its speed sometimes leads to police attention, occasionally in unmarked cars. Dave has a good relationship with the police thanks to requesting his guests respect limits, especially 30s through villages. You have to be riding pretty irresponsibly to get a ticket. The A7 rolls gently up and down along the hilly landscape enhanced by attractive views of forests and fields. It’s a great route to relax and enjoy. Hawick has a bike museum which pays tribute to two of its own bike race champions – Jimmy Guthrie and Steve Hislop. Then after Selkirk you join the ‘gem road’ of the area, the A708 and head back to Moffat.

KNOW-HOW 33
Let’s off-road
Bruce Wilson lets you in on his dirty little secret: Riding off-road is fun, easy, and can be very cheap. What are you waiting for?
YOU choose the speed, the place and the difficulty. Without throwing the old cliché book around too much, riding off-road is a motorcycling gateway to real freedom. It’s an access point to adventure, satisfaction and rewarding skills that will improve your road riding too. Have we mentioned fun yet? Above all else, off-road riding is great fun. And it can be surprisingly affordable, too, as you’ll discover over the next few pages, along with what you’ll need to get into the scene, what kind of bikes are out there and where you can go. Enjoy!
making a serious investment, but there are literally thousands of used options of every variety littering the UK, ready to be snapped up for a few hundred quid. Okay, so your first bike might be a bit shabby, but it’ll mean you’ll probably feel less concerned about scratching it while you’re learning the ropes. And once you’re up to speed you can soon flog it and upgrade to something a bit fancier. The same goes for kit. While you should always invest in a new helmet, a lot of used off-road kit can be found on auction sites or off-road forums.
Is it expensive to get into?
What type of off-road riding will suit me?
Like anything, off-road riding is as expensive as you want to make it. Buy a new bike and you’re going to be
The best thing about off-road riding is that there are so many different
disciplines, focusing around four main groups: green lanes, trials, motocross and enduro. They each have their own unique feel, and present different riding challenges. Green laning, in the company of a few mates and without any pressure, is what weekends are made for; trials is slow and technical; motocross is fast and edgy and enduro is a good mix of both. Which genre suits you best is a question best answered by getting out there and giving each one a try. You’ll find more info on schooling on page 38.
Where can I ride?
The good news is, the UK has traditionally embraced off-road riding, which means there are motocross tracks and enduro parks the length of Britain. A bit of searching online will help you suss out where you can go for a blast, but trials courses are a little harder to come by; it might be better to join your local club and get stuck in with some friendly competition. Now here comes the serious bit: to ride green lanes your bike has to be road-legal and insured. You’ll also need to seek out legal byways where you’re permitted to ride your bike. There are plenty marked on an up-todate Ordnance Survey Explorer map, and the Trail Riders Fellowship (TRF) website – www.trf.org.uk – will give you a good pointer on what you can and can’t ride, along with an invitation to join them on specific outings.
What kit will I need?
1
Helmet: With the exception of trials helmets, most off-road lids are easily recognised for their large peaks and drawn out chin bars. The latter helps with air flow, while the
peak works to protect the rider from flying debris and bright sunlight. There’s a huge variety of products to suit all budgets. Neck braces: To protect your neck in the event of a fall, a neck brace is advisable. This Leatt product catches the rider’s helmet on the outer rim, preventing any hyperextension. The dynamic force is then dissipated via the carbon-fibre wings on to the torso. Boots: Thick soles, metal plates and a braced, stiffer exterior cope with the nature of rough and often rocky terrain. They’re often buckled, too, allowing for a more secure fitment to the leg. Trials boots, unlike most off-road options, feature level soles. Gloves: Most off-road riders prefer thin textile gloves to ensure good feel. They’re typically less armoured, with a lot of venting. Hands get wet quicker, but the gloves also dry out faster, and can be washed without the risk of shrinkage. Body armour: Whatever discipline you’re riding, body armour should always be worn. The main kinds of torso armour are hard plastics or special rubber compounds, like this Extreme Harness Adventure from Forcefield. It incorporates back, chest, shoulder and elbow armour and can easily be adjusted to provide a custom fit. Separate knee guards should also be worn as, like elbows, they’re a common impact point. Outer layers: Trials riders often wear stretchy Lycra garments for freedom of movement. Green laners will be better off with textile adventure suits, with built in armour and waterproof qualities. A pants and jersey combo, like this, will better suit motocross and enduro riders, who need more flexibility and protection.

34 KNOW-HOW
WK450RX A road-legal bike ideal
Buying used: Yamaha WR250F
for green lanes.
What do I need to know?
WK’s 450RX is a road-legal enduro bike, especially targeted at those wanting to ride green lanes. Equipped with lights and indicators, the Chinese-built motorcycle also features both kick and electric start options to bring its 450cc motor to life. Key features include inverted forks, a monoshock and a lightweight aluminium frame.
What’s it like to ride?
I was lucky to put in a decent amount of miles on the 450, which mostly fired first time on the button and ran like a trooper both on- and off-road. A lot of the routes I took it on were mild mannered but muddy lanes, and I was happy enough with the way the 450 could switch lines and tackle the rough stuff with relative ease. The bike has a slightly top-heavy feel and my only concern was prompted when I hit a really muddy section at pace; the weight seemed to get from under the bike and emphasise the slides. It never caught me out properly; maybe a better rider would have just taken it in their stride, but it got my heart racing a time or two. The brakes are acceptable, but not fantastic. The front brake in particular feels a little wooden, although it worked just fine on every application and proved powerful enough to pull the odd endo on demand. Something else to note is the firmness of the seatpad, which takes a bit of getting used to.
Tell me about the motor
I was genuinely impressed with the engine’s performance. On green lanes you don’t want ridiculous power or dizzying amounts of revs, and the WK packs a lot of punch from low down. That means you can be quite lazy with the gears, and you’re always in top when you’re travelling on the road. As standard, it’s geared quite tall, which means it’ll easily topple motorway speeds, at which point the bike does have a tendency to weave a little on its knobbly tyres. The gearbox seemed smooth to work through and the carb’d fuelling seemed glitch free. Riding through
some extremely wet stretches, the airbox got a little flooded, which took a bit of revving to clear through.
Why should I buy one?
The WK is more affordable than a lot of other mainstream brand options, and in my opinion offers good value for money, especially when you sample it in the context it’s been made for; trail riding. It proved perfectly capable of the job in hand, comfortably delivering on both the road and off-road elements. It’s a decent looking piece of kit and it’s backed up with a year’s parts warranty and six months of labour, adding peace of mind into the equation.
Owner: John Milbank Year: 2005 Paid: £1700 My first green-lane bike was an old Honda CRM250 – a two-stroke, it was famous for having a really strong engine that wasn’t peaky and aggressive like the motocross-focused CR of the time. The four-stroke WR250 is great, with plenty of useful power low in the revs, but an exciting top-end. It’s quite tall – even at 5ft 11in I wouldn’t mind lowering it a touch, but it’s still a brilliant all-round machine that doesn’t intimidate me like a 450 would. Only problems have been the usual worn/neglected bearings; it cost me £113 to replace all of them in the suspension.

Honda Montesa Cota 4RT
Buying used: Yamaha TY250
A trials bike for slow and technical riding over mostly natural obstacles. What do I need to know?
The Honda/Montesa story is one steeped in success, taking the last seven world trials championships consecutively. For 2014 there’s the allnew Cota 260, which has seen many advancements over the previous fourstroke powered 250, including an increase in capacity for additional torque and a decompression system to reduce engine braking. The fuel tank and plastics are also new, along with the suspension.
What’s it like to ride?
Speaking from a real amateur’s perspective, the bike’s a dream. It’s stupidly light and really well balanced. I got to experience the Cota 260 at its model launch, on which there were a real variety of riding challenges, including rocks, steep banks and streams. I was out of my depth, but the bike helped me through some pretty tricky situations. The suspension’s super supple, and
seems to mould itself to whatever you’re tackling. It’ll compress as much or as little as you need it to, as the bike clambers effortlessly over obstacles in its path. The CoG is notably low, and the short wheelbase means you can quickly switch direction, aided by the broad and well-balanced bars. The levers are intuitively placed and I can’t give enough credit to the hydraulic clutch, which proved super smooth and easy to manage accurately.
Tell me about the motor
The torquey motor makes this bike fantastic. It pulls really hard and that’s what the pros say they like best about it. Most of the Cota’s rivals are twostrokes, but the Honda motor delivered linear and precise power without any hesitation. The gearbox is really smooth and it’s a doddle to kick into action. You can really run the bike low in the revs, too, without any fear of stalling. Under the guidance of wiser riders, they encouraged me to use the tick-over alone to tackle relatively tight, but flat sections; on all of which it performed admirably.
Why should I buy one?
Because it’s not just a great bike, it’s that bit different to the rest. And it’s got a fantastic heritage which makes it hard to question the four-stroke direction. Not to mention the simplicity of running a four-stroke over a two-stroke – no premixing and less regular maintenance. It’s a serious piece of kit. Watch Bruce put the Montesa through its paces by going to MoreBikes.co.uk and searching for ‘Montesa’.
Owner: Broderick Whitmore-Wilson Year: 1984 Paid: £700 Before this I had a nearly new Beta. That was a great bike and I never imagined anything this old would be comparable. In truth, it’s not, but it’s still great fun to ride and surprisingly capable. It starts first kick and has never had any issues other than the occasionally oiled plug. The best thing about the bike is the motor. It’s really torquey and will power up most things. The front forks feel a bit washy though – they’re probably well overdue a good service. For the money, it’s fantastic. Especially when you think of it as an investment.

36 KNOW-HOW
Honda CRF250R
Buying used: KTM 150 SX
Motocross bike for purpose-built tracks with jumps and berms. What do I need to know?
New for 2014, the latest generation CRF250R features the same masscentralised aluminium frame as the bigger CRF450R, and a considerable engine update, which has seen an improvement in the four-stroke’s peak power and torque figures. The pedigree middleweight crosser has never been so race focused, with further enhancements being made to the 48mm inverted Showa forks, while the fully adjustable rear shocks are all new.
What’s it like to ride?
Novices and pros alike will love the CRF, and for plenty of worthy reasons. The most notable of which is probably the way this bike handles; it’s super agile, stable and ridiculously pliable. Pitch it into a corner and the Honda’s frame talks you through the tracking of both wheels with such precision that you can’t help but know
exactly what’s going on below you. Riding the bike on several different motocross tracks, I was a big fan of the feedback, which stayed with me even when the bike was airborne. A couple of frightful take-offs were easily corrected midflight with a dab of brake to draw the front end down. I also learnt how forgiving the bike could be when landing with the wheels crossed up. The Showa suspension, which I never adjusted from standard, seemed ridiculously flexible, tracking the ground plushly through the scatty stuff, in turn delivering a really resilient bottom end to its stroke for the jumpy bits.
Tell me about the motor
The evolved 249cc single is a masterful piece of engineering. While it’s a big fan of revs – peaking at 11,000rpm – it’s surprisingly torquey. Once I’d got my head around a track, I found myself running a gear taller than I’d have imagined, often only ever knocking down to second for the really tight stuff, as the motor, complemented by a bit of exit speed, would romp off out of corners from lower revs in third. It’s easy to kick (there’s no electric start) and another great thing about the engine is that it’s not just flexible, but really pliable as well. Making 37.5bhp, it’s no wet lettuce, but you can still be quite greedy on the throttle without feeling terrified that the bike’s a moment away from launching you to the moon.
The output’s delivered to the rear wheel in a really tractable way, which translates to a few surprise wheelies when the back wheel hooks up following a slide. Despite being cable operated, it’s also worth mentioning how lightweight the clutch is, which gives a really accurate feel.
Why should I buy one?
If you’re in the market for a top-level 250cc crosser, the CRF would be a
great choice of bike. It’s rammed with loads of great qualities, but it’s also got the build quality to back things up. If you get the chance to swing by a dealer’s then you’ll see how nicely crafted the Honda is, with not a scrap of unnecessary weight to be found. The styling’s up there with the best, and the resale value on a Honda will also work to your favour when it comes time to trade-up again. A great piece of kit.
Owner: Aaron Smart Year: 2010 Paid: £2230 I’m new to off-road and wanted something lightweight and manageable. That’s exactly what the KTM offers. The motor’s got really good midrange, but I’ve found it’ll oil plugs a little too easily if it’s not being thrashed everywhere. It’s a great bike, but it’s not without its niggles. I bought the bike in January and have since had to have a complete engine rebuild. The other gripe is the jetting. It’s a bit finicky and can run a bit rough at times. Moans aside, it’s a great starter bike.
TECH SPEC Engine: 249cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder Power: 37.5bhp (28kW) @ 11,000rpm Torque: 19.5lb-ft (26Nm) @ 8500rpm Seat height: 951mm Wheelbase: 1489mm Weight: 106kg Price: £6599 www.honda.co.uk
KNOW-HOW 37
Husqvarna FE250
Enduro, for large circuits of varied terrain, including woods, flats and jumps. What do I need to know?
The high-spec FE250 (Four-stroke Enduro) is a premium product in its field. It’s littered with top-end features, including titanium valves, WP suspension and a special composite subframe designed to flex and absorb impact in a way that aluminium can’t match. It also features electric start and triple clamps for precise front-end feedback. As with most enduro-spec bikes, it can also be road registered.
What’s it like to ride?
Loads of fun: The FE250 is ridiculously versatile. It’s not as focused as a full-on motocross bike, but it can still tackle purpose-built tracks with ease. The same goes for more technical sections where you need a well-balanced and agile machine. It delivers a really plush feel and sits well into anything you throw at it. The bike’s WP suspension is fantastic stuff, although after landing a few jumps with a firm slap as the units bottomed out on the stroke, I got the tools out to tweak the compression and firm things up. The bike felt so much better and I was really glad it didn’t compromise the effortless quality it processed through the other bits of the track. To really get a feel for the bike, I also took it to a three hour enduro. From MX tracks to woods, the five mile circuit had everything, and I came away really impressed by the bike’s
Buying used: KTM 300 EXC
versatility. It devoured everything and proved really nimble. Thankfully, it didn’t feel top heavy either, which also meant picking it back up after a crash was much easier.
Tell me about the motor
It’s a great all-rounder. The engine makes good power at the bottom, middle and top-end. You can throw gears at it and it’ll pull them well for a mid-size bike, not relying as much as others in its category on an abundance of revs (though choosing the right gear is still crucial). As powerful as it is, big steep hill climbs can take their toll on the motor. The solution being to run a gear lower and scream it to the top. Gear changes were effortless, with a smooth performance both up and down the six-speed transmission. Not everyone’s a fan of four-stroke engine braking, but I really liked the added bonus of an additional anchor on downhill descents, despite brakes being exceptional. One last quality to shout about is the harsh noise of the FE: It sounds great throughout the rev range.
Why should I buy one?
This is a beautiful bike on so many levels. It’s so versatile and applies itself pleasingly to whatever you throw at it, be it a motocross track, an enduro park or a green lane. It’s a premium product with a high-spec build, oozing fancy components. It’s a hard machine to fault.
Owner: Matt Ryder Year: 2007 Paid: £3100 I’ve had this bike since 2009 and I love it. I bought it with 29 hours on the motor and I’ve put another 130 on since. Personally, I prefer two-strokes to fours and I love the oomph of the bike’s torquey motor. It’s a beast, but it can also dawdle without the raggedness of a four-stroke. That’s the real appeal; it’s so versatile. It handles well for a big bike, too. I normally use it in enduro races, but it works a treat on green lanes as well. I’d definitely recommend it. In fact, if I buy another bike it’ll be one of these.

The Arctic ride
Day 5 – Valdresflye mountain pass, central Norway.
Gordon Stuart tells the heart-warming story of his incredible journey through northern Europe. I PULLED my bike to the side of the road, coming to a stop with gravel and dust at my feet. I removed my helmet and felt the cold mountain breeze across my face. As I got off the bike I turned back to see the road I had just ridden. A coating of snow either side; wet from the countless waterfalls that drain from the snowy mountains and empty, twisting beyond the spikey peaks in the distance. Having battled with the stifling heat of London traffic, Antwerp, and Hamburg; fought the wind on the 8km Øresund Bridge; and shivered my way through
Gordon Stuart ready for his adventure.
countless mountain passes and tunnels, I was here… nearly 3000 miles from home, in biker’s paradise… living the dream I had been having for the past four years. I was in Finnmark, Norway’s far north, the top of Europe, and deep inside the wilderness of the Arctic. The ambiance of Oslo was a distant memory, and the tourist-filled fjords of Norway’s west coast were far from my mind. My view was like a postcard but I reminded myself that my journey wasn’t a trip of leisure, but one of challenge, hope, adventure, and altruism. I had a goal too: to reach Nordkapp – the most northerly point in Europe. It was almost four years ago when I first started dreaming of Nordkapp. A late night conversation in 2010 with my brother-in-law sparked my quest for this obscure location. He was undertaking the Mongol Rally, albeit by car, the following year. Having always been a biker, I toyed with the idea of entering too but I soon found the restrictions on the size and age of the vehicles that could be used ruled out what was sitting in my garage. While a charitable event, the entrance fee seemed high and it was money I felt should go straight to the charities. After exploring the maps we had to hand, the investigation led me to one conclusion: I was going to do my own solo charity motorbike ride but I wasn’t going to go to Mongolia. I was going to the Arctic!
For years beforehand I had wanted to raise money for charity but I never found the right opportunity. There was one charity in particular that had a place in my heart – Cerebra (www.cerebra.org.uk). It is a UKbased brain injury charity that supports children, and their families, who have suffered brain injuries. My little brother Robbie suffered a brain injury at nine months old, and Cerebra has done amazing work to help him and my family. Only a few months after coming up with the original idea, in May 2011 I set off from my hometown of Whitley Bay in the north of England, heading for the Arctic. At the time, I was riding my daily commuter, a
Kawasaki ER5. However, on day seven in northern Sweden I had a crash which caused me to be delayed by four days and ultimately limp home having failed to ride to the Arctic. I raised £1700 for the charity, and had great support from my friends and family, but in my heart I failed and it was a horrible feeling. Fast forward to early 2013 and a lot had changed. I’d got married, graduated from university, and got myself a grown-up job as a project manager. Another late night conversation, this time with my wife, reignited my Arctic flame and my destiny. I decided I was going to give it another go, and make sure Cerebra would benefit from my adventure.
This time I gave myself 14 months to plan the trip and get the support I needed to make it a success. I set up Facebook and Twitter accounts, started writing weekly blogs, and used the skills I’d learnt in my job to make sure every detail had been thought of, – no matter what went wrong on the trip I had contingencies to ensure I got to the Arctic. I also bought myself a new bike. The Kawasaki had been a great workhorse for six years, but I needed something a bit bigger that would be more comfortable over long distances, hold me and my gear and was within my price range. After much investigation and research, I took an eight hour train ride to Swansea in winter where
Adventure 41 I bought, picked up, and rode home my new baby: a blue and white 2009 Suzuki GSX650F. Over the months I networked with bikers from across the globe, gained supporters, and got some local motorbike companies on board as corporate sponsors, to help me fund the petrol costs for the 6000 mile adventure. I set myself a target of £2500 to raise for the charity – more than double the cost of running the trip (funded by me and my corporate sponsors)… my mantra was the famous ‘You’ve got to spend money to make money.’
Setting off
Suddenly, I was sitting on my bike on a cold Saturday morning in May looking at St Mary’s lighthouse – the icon of my hometown of Whitley Bay and the starting point of my Arctic ride. With barely more than a tent, sleeping bag, camera equipment, and some spare clothes on the back of my bike, I was ready for the 6000 mile, three-week adventure that lay ahead. I was joined by Cerebra, friends, family, sponsors, and supporters at my starting point… I kept a brave and confident face, but inside I was nervous and apprehensive. I love nothing more

than riding my bike but the pressure was on, having failed in 2011. I’d already reached my £2500 target before leaving; I had thousands of followers on social media all cheering me on but I was also leaving my sixmonth pregnant wife at home. I pulled away from the lighthouse in convoy with 15 or so of my biker buddies but 30 miles later only one remained who would join me for the rest of my 360 mile ride to Dover on Day 1. The weather was awful for riding. Torrential rain and dense traffic made the ride south a real chore. When the weather did ease I was greeted by the rush-hour traffic of the M25. Even though only a 650, when the bike was fully loaded it felt heavy and very wide. The following few days I spent almost 100% on motorways as I rode east through France, Belgium, Netherlands, and Germany, before heading north into Denmark and Sweden. I did several 500+ mile days to get me up to Scandinavia in my timeframe, but being fresh into my trip made them slightly easier. By the end of Day 4 I was camped in Oslo and said goodbye to motorway riding for the foreseeable future. For the next 10 days I headed north through Norway. The route was filled
Day 10 – Balsfjorden, Troms county, northern Norway.
Day 13 – Nordkapp, northern Norway (the aim of my trip).
Day 18 – Valdresflye Plateau, central Norway.
with snowy mountain passes, tunnels, hairpin bends, and wildlife spilling on to the road. Choosing to travel in May and early June was a risk. I had been told before I left that the weather in Norway, especially the Arctic North, was variable at best; there was a real chance the mountain passes could be icy or closed due to snow. Unlike my last trip, luck seemed to be on my side. As I rode north through Norway I followed a high pressure weather system which kept me dry, and importantly brought the temperatures up enough to ensure there was little snow on the roads. Word about my trip got out to some of the motorcycle community in Norway and I was lucky enough to be chaperoned in some counties by local motorcycle clubs, who also arranged beds for the night on a few of my stops. At 11am on Day 13 I reached the
Nordkapp. The emotions going through me were mixed. I was so proud that I had made it here as an ambassador of Cerebra, and that I’d achieved my aim. But also I was mentally tired; my body was hurting, and I had to ride another 3000 miles to get home. The roads back were quiet and full of twisty bends. I was averaging 350 miles a day, but I soon realised this was my reward for making it to Nordkapp, and I began to enjoy the ride and took in some of the sights along the route back. On Day 21 I arrived in Amsterdam where I would catch my ferry home to Newcastle. It felt strange to be going home not only as I’d been on the road, camping for three weeks straight, but that I no longer had Nordkapp in my sights… I’d done it, and I was already beginning to dream of my next adventure.

I was waiting in traffic on my SV1000 when some numpty in a Corsa ran into the back of me. I lost my balance and the Suzuki leaned to that point of no return so I laid it down gently. The driver stopped and we exchanged details, but in all honesty no harm was done to the bike and I was all right thankfully. I thought no more about it until I was called and told by some random company that they could help me, and there was compensation waiting for me. I then got about half a dozen texts telling me there was money waiting and I needed to act. While I know I’m not hurt and the bike is okay, should I claim? Is there money waiting for me? It seems morally wrong but I could do with the cash to pay for our holiday this summer. Also, even though I am not claiming, do I need to tell my insurance company?
A
It sounds like some unscrupulous scumbag has passed your details on to this company which reckons it can help you. It makes my blood boil that people’s private information is not treated properly. Despite assertions by this company that you are entitled to compensation, it is a long established legal principle that compensation is to put you back in the same place you were, but for the accident. Therefore, as you state you and the bike were fine, there is no loss to claim – as such, you are not entitled to any compensation. To claim when you and your bike are fine would be fraudulent in my opinion. Anyone who advises you otherwise is a liar at worst; or misguided/stupid at best. It’s likely your insurance has a clause which requires you to report any accident. If you do not it could invalidate your insurance.

A bus pulled out from a minor road directly in front of me and my Hayabusa. I had no chance of stopping and T-boned it. I’ve lost two teeth, fractured my neck, punctured my lung, broken two ribs and fractured my pelvis. Summer isn’t looking too sweet but I’m alive… I’m not too worried as to who was to blame, but I am worried about the future and making sure I get the right representation. My insurer has told me I need use its panel solicitor. Someone called me from the panel solicitor telling me they are a litigation specialist. Is this the same as a solicitor, and do I have to use who my insurer tells me to? I hope you have a speedy recovery and I like A your ‘I’m alive’ attitude. With regards to representation, despite what anyone tells you –
i.e. your insurer – you are the client, it is your claim and you can choose your own solicitor. Simple as that. If you do choose to let your insurer dictate what legal representation you have, be very careful what the ‘panel solicitor’ firm tells you as to the status of the person it proposes to use to run your claim. There are all kinds of phrases bandied about, such as ‘litigation specialist’, ‘paralegal’ and ‘solicitor liaison officer’. In short, none of these titles mean that the person is a qualified solicitor, or has any legal qualifications at all. You can check on the Law Society website. While there are some very good litigators who are not solicitors, in my experience there are also some very poor ones, so do your homework to make sure you get someone who can do the job properly.

“NICE BIKE MATE…” 2007 YAMAHA FZS1000 FAZER
Name: Phil Kermeen From: Buckinghamshire Occupation: IT consultant Owned bike for: Nine months Tell us about it: I’d sold my CBR600 and had been riding my dad’s Deauville, which I really hated, so was looking for a sportsbike. This was in my local dealer for £4000 and looked fantastic with braided brake lines, adjustable levers… it looked like someone had really loved it. I bought it on looks alone, and didn’t test ride it.When I did ride it, I realised the suspension, which was standard, was horrible – it just kicked about on fast bumpy roads. I ended up buying an aftermarket shock off the previous owner – he reckoned it made a big difference, but he was a lot heavier than me, and I’m still not happy with it. At some point I want to talk to a suspension specialist, but I’m worried about how much money I’m pumping into the bike. I thought this would be somewhere between a KTM 950 and a Fireblade: the best bits of a sportsbike, with the practicality of a more upright bike. It’s not – when I ride it hard into corners it feels heavy and the suspension’s not managing it properly. The engine’s stonking when it’s revving high, but I really want the torque of a V-twin. I wish I’d bought an Aprilia. It’s a bit of a ‘muscle Mary’ of a bike – it’s down the beach pumping iron and looking good, but if it got into a fight it’d have the s**t kicked out of it. If I don’t persevere with the suspension, I might get a Hayabusa… Engine: 998cc water-cooled inline four Power: 148bhp (37kW) @ 11,000rpm Torque: 78lb-ft (42Nm) @ 8000rpm Weight: 199kg Seat height: 815mm Current value: Dealer £4300; Private £3700; Part-ex £3200

Suzuki RF900R If you wanted one machine that would tour and commute; offer sensible running costs and more than a crumb of comfort; have a bit of clout without scaring you witless and yet not break the bank… what would you go for?
SUZUKI used to offer such a machine, and the good news is that today even the best of the breed regularly fail to top £2000. Out on the road many riders would argue that 135bhp fits rather nicely into the ‘more than adequate’ bracket. Factor in a creamy 100lb-ft of torque and it would only be a pedant or egomaniac that would turn down such a package at the price. For further bragging rights 80% of this torque is delivered before 3500rpm, making the bike something of a stump puller. The RF900R was very accurately billed as a sports tourer, and in all honesty few machines have better fulfilled the role. Although not in the league of modern sports bikes, the RF is a fairly competent handler, courtesy of its steel perimeter chassis. Halfway through its lifetime the bike received revised front forks, but if you’re after a low cost bike with the usability factor and
ride it as such, it’s more than adequate. In fact the bike actually rides better with a bit of weight and/or pillion on board. Despite its budget billing from the outset, the bike has a strong sporting quality which belies its price both then and now. There’s a decent seat for both rider and passenger, along with some quite respectable weather protection. When launched the bike took some serious knocking due to its then unconventional side vents. Likened by many to a Ferrari Testarossa, the fairing has now come of age and is now more a talking point than an object of ridicule. In the engine department it’s pretty much all good news. Derived from the GSX1100R, the motor is understressed, so it’ll run and run given basic servicing. The fuelling is taken care of by a quartet of undersized 36mm Mikuni carburettors, which means the bike is tuned for torque
and therefore driveability, rather than out and out performance. If you wanted verification of the RF900R’s credentials know this: Suzuki took various FIM accredited world record titles including farthest travelled (5900km) and also managed to run for 24 hours at an average of just over 152mph. All of which is an impressive set of statistics for a machine that was sold as a budget motorcycle. Obviously Suzuki wasn’t paring back to the bone in all areas, as the exhaust headers were made of stainless steel from day one. Many if not all examples of the RF on sale now will probably run an aftermarket can on the 4-1-2 system, and they don’t seem to suffer unduly because of it. Being tuned for torque rather than all-out power means they’re not overly fussy unless you go for a full race pipe. Digging around the web it’s evident that the bike is almost obscenely easy to keep on the road for very little
money: Less than 15 quid buys you a carb diaphragm; all the brake service components are low-cost, and pretty much anything else you might need to keep an RF running is out there and at sensible money. Comfort, grunt, low purchase price and low running costs... what more could you ask for?

The VJMC has a large and diverse membership that doesn’t necessarily get all frothy and excited at the sight of a 1963 Honda indicator bolt. Many of the members are into later Japanese iron that was once derisorily referred to as UJMs (Universal Japanese Motorcycles). The very fact that the inline four-cylinder motor became so popular can hardly be happenstance. Smooth, tractable and potentially damn fast, the engine layout has a lot going for it. The classic scene is, arguably, running out of accessible iconic 60s

and early 70s machinery, and therefore those that want to tinker, restore, spanner or ride are now looking to newer classic Jap Iron. Air-cooled fours from any of the factories are readily accessible, and if you use a bit of nous you can still pick a period machine with character and reliability for less than two grand. Yamaha XJs, Suzuki GSs, Kawasaki GTs and GPZs and any one of a legion of Honda fours are still there for the taking. The bikes are still more than viable, reliability isn’t an issue, and most of the spares you’ll ever need can still be found. If you need some guidance we’ll be happy to advise.
