“Riding in bad weather is definitely more challenging. Give yourself enough following distance – in the rain you need to see the road surface early enough to be able to avoid puddles, drain covers and potholes full of water. Your braking distance will have increased too. Bear in mind that heavy rain creates pools of water across the carriageway – if you see it, avoid it. If it’s too late then don’t brake or accelerate, instead ease off the throttle a bit and steer straight ahead. “The wind can unsettle your bike and blow you off course. Look ahead at the trees and bushes, and the behaviour of other vehicles to see how it’s affecting them – this will show you where the worst patches are. Riding past lorries and trucks has a similar effect.”

“For me, and I think most riders feel the same, riding in the rain isn’t something we really enjoy, we’d all much prefer it was dry! However, it cannot be avoided and when it arrives you need to pay attention. Usually we have a good idea when we will have to ride in wet conditions – as either it’s already wet at the beginning of a session or if it arrives during a session then we simply return to the pits and change for a wet setup. The more tricky situation is when rain arrives during the race – and even more so if you’re leading as you’re usually the first to find it, and you must decide how much to push without risking falling off! This for me is the most difficult part of riding in the rain.” Unlike Marc, we don’t have to push to the limit on the road but the key is the same – preparation and riding to your ability. NEWS 5 New 400cc trail adventure bike from WK bikes

Kevin and Julia Sanders are double Guinness World Record holders for the fastest circumnavigation of the World and the Trans Americas by motorcycle. They now run GlobeBusters, specialising in taking riders on similar journeys… “It’s taken us years to figure out what works best for us – and I stress for us because riding gear is a personal choice – but layering has proved a successful method for hiking, skiing and climbing for years, and I don’t see that motorcycling is any different. The beauty of separate layers is that you can mix and match to the conditions. “We use a four-layer system. The base layer is perhaps the most important, as it needs to keep the skin dry: vital for comfort in all conditions. Cotton can absorb up to 10 times its own weight in water or perspiration, and takes forever to dry, making it dangerous to use as a base layer because it can accelerate the body’s heat loss. Go for merino wool instead. It’s expensive, but it’s a superb temperature regulator, naturally breathable and resists the buildup of bacteria. “The mid-layer traps warm air next to the body, the logic being, if your core is warm your extremities will be. It can be wool, polyester fleece, down, or synthetic. We usually go for fleece, as it’s lightweight, easy to care for and comfortable. If you can, go for the windbreaker variety, which as the name suggests, helps lessen the effects of wind. “Next is the motorcycle layer. Steer clear of the black-and-grey-withdetachable-liner textile, and go for something more focused. Discard a waterproof liner, as having it on the inside means the outer bit gets soaked and is difficult to dry out. Ditch the

thermal inner too; your mid-layer top and a pair of trekking-type trousers will do the same job. Go for adjustable neck and cuffs, and find one with venting, preferably on the front, back, arms and legs. When it’s hot, go with just the base layer and open the vents, when it’s cold, close them and add the mid-layer. “If it’s very cold, or wet, the waterproof outer layer then comes into play, keeping you dry and acting as a barrier against wind. If you can, get a GoreTex, or similar, for the additional breathability. “I wince when I see riders in a light soft tour boot, and I wince when I look back at photos of me and Kevin riding around South America in hiking boots. Over the years, we’ve seen too many injuries to shins, ankles and feet that, but for the sake of a good boot, we are convinced would have been less severe. We always advise riders to get a sturdy boot with good protection. Buy on the big size, to allow room for thick socks. And if they’re not waterproof, buy some socks that are.”

WHY KAWASAKI XR200R Honda Enduro BUILT THE H2R HOW ABOUT AN…

“WE MADE this bike because we could,” said Martin Lambert – Communications and PR manager for Kawasaki Motors UK, when asked what the thinking was behind the track-based 326bhp Ninja H2R. “It’s a very important machine for Kawasaki Heavy Industries – we are all about performance. “We’ve got the facilities to make this bike… some people would go away and buy a supercharger, but we developed and made our own. The H2R is at the head of the range, and will affect all other Kawasakis. It’s a brand leader. “The road-going H2 and the H2R were both developed at the same time, for two completely different reasons. The H2R is a closed-course machine, which means it’s totally not for the road – it’s designed without

FANCY something a bit different? Tapping into the growing semicompetitive off-road scene in the UK of the early 80s, Honda – by design or accident – created a cult machine with the XR200R.

any parameters at all – this is literally the best that we could do.” The motorcycle market needs reinvigorating, and regardless of whether sportbikes are for you, this is one of the most talked-about machines in a very long time. See the video of it on the dyno at http://bit.ly/H2Rdyno

Tiger IS built for off-road riding, says Triumph

TRIUMPH recently released a video ad showing Bear Grylls riding the Tiger off-road. At the end was a disclaimer stating that the bike isn’t intended for off-road use. In such a litigious world, I’m not that surprised, but it set the internet alight with illinformed criticism of the British firm. We spoke to Triumph at Motorcycle Live and the company said “Hands up – we made a mistake! In the mad rush of Intermot, EICMA, Motorcycle Live etc., our standard disclaimer was used

and we failed to spot the error. The video will be updated with the correct version shortly.” Despite it being a mistake – and we know as well as Triumph does, that the Tiger is a very capable off-road machine – it’s not a motocrosser, and unless Triumph covers its arse, some fool will complain when the bike breaks over a massive MX jump, or when they fall down a mine shaft. Tell us what you think by contacting us at the address on page 11.

Why should I want one? The XR200R is a mild-mannered round town machine with the guts to do business off-road. Rather like Clark Kent transforming into Superman when the need arises, the Honda will allow a civilised, economical ride to work Monday to Friday… Saturday and Sunday there’s the Hare and Hounds or Vinduro scene with the 200cc ohc single punching well above its weight.

What should I look for? Introduced in 1981 as a development of the XR200, the ‘R’ model got the MX developed Pro-Link rear suspension to complement longer travel front suspension. Essentially a slightly shorter stroked, smaller bored XR250R, the 200cc model was actually a better bike. There’s a great following for the XR200R and, if you can only justify one motorcycle in your garage and like the idea of getting out for a bit of competition work, then the XR200R should be your answer. Cheap to insure, great parts supply, light, road legal and a load of fun…

How do I look after it? It’s a Honda, so pretty bombproof unless you do something silly. Follow the service manual if you use it around town; change the oil and clean out the brakes more often if you enduro it, as well as looking after the chain and air filter more. Expect to pay: Around £1500 for a restoration project that can be used, £2000 for a decent looker.

PUTTING IN THE MILES WITH THE KIT THAT MATTERS

Knox Dry Inside long-sleeved T-shirt

£36.99 | www.planet-knox.com | 01900 825825 | Tested by Carli Ann Smith I’ve worn this top a lot, in a variety of conditions and think its mix of traditional T-shirt materials, with a hi-tech specification is fantastic. Many base layers are made of ‘technical’ man-made fabrics, but this one is 95% cotton that’s been treated with ‘3XDRY’ – a technology that offers a “combination of water repellence and moisture-management”. To you and me that means it absorbs and evaporates your sweat from the inside, and blocks moisture from the outside, keeping you comfortable and dry. There are two strategically placed white stripes, made from breather tape, which offer ventilation. Even on the occasions where I got hot and may have perspired, it wasn’t noticeable on the outside of the T-shirt – unlike many other garments which change colour dramatically. It’s very comfortable to wear, and doesn’t look out of place when I take my jacket off. I also feel a lot less hot and bothered than I usually do on warm rides. The treatment lasts for 35-50 washing cycles at 30º, and can’t be washed with fabric softener. If used and washed every day, that could be an issue, but it can be prolonged by ironing the shirt on the inside or tumble-drying it after washing. It’s available from XS – XXXL and other items are available in the range – including leggings and shortsleeved T-shirts.

If your motorcycle needs to be stored outside, a quality cover is essential. Protecting your machine from the sun, rain, hail, snow, bird poo etc, it needs to be big enough to cover the bike (also keeping it out of sight); it needs to be heat resistant (so it doesn’t melt on the exhaust); and it needs to stay on in the wind. The Stormex achieves all of this and more. Available in three sizes – small (£59.99), medium (£69.99) and large – there should be one to suit your machine. A medium would have been fine on my Kawasaki Z1000SX, but the top-box takes up a lot of space. A protected vent on the cover would usually be facing down, but the Zed’s luggage pushes the holes a little

high, so I just need to take an extra few seconds to make sure these are positioned correctly to not allow water to dribble in. There are plenty of extra features, including an adjustable belly strap for when it’s really windy, red-trimmed holes to pass a chain through, a padlock pouch to keep it off the ground, a curtained rear window to allow you to show your numberplate if necessary, plus a front window pocket for a solar charger. Clear reflective markings also make it easy to see which way round it should go. The Stormex cossets your bike with a soft, heat-resistant lining, while splash-guards stop water wicking up the inside. As bike covers go, this one certainly isn’t cheap, but it’s very well thought-out.

Interphone F5MC Bluetooth intercom

£303.99 (twin-pack until 31 December) | www.nevis.uk.com | 01425 478936 Tested by John Milbank For sheer ease of use, the Interphone F5MC is incredible. Turn it on and you’re greeted with “Battery high, Interphone ready. Intercom. Connected to phone”. Yes, it talks to you. The amount of verbal feedback the unit gives you can be changed in the settings very easily… Click the top button for ‘Setup’, then follow the prompts as the polite lady talks you through each option. I’d forgotten to pair my TomTom Rider with the Interphone on the way to a meeting, yet was easily able to do it all on the move, without taking my eyes off the road – it really is that simple. I appreciate this ease of use, especially when I’m testing many different brands. Most users only need to recall what one intercom’s bleeps mean, but even so, I can’t praise the F5MC’s interface enough. Each unit comes complete with a pair of speakers, a standard full-face lid mic, and a boom mic for open-face or flip-front lids. An adhesive mount and clamp-type bracket are

Charging port doubles as auxiliary input

also in the box. I’m using a Pro Sound audio kit, designed specifically for my Schuberth flip-front lid (a Shoei one is also available) – the speakers fit exactly into the helmet’s lining, with a specially-designed boom mic. You could use the standard kit, but the Pro Sound does offer larger, louder drivers. Pairing with any device is simple, and I find being able to listen to music streamed from my phone via Bluetooth certainly breaks up the boring motorway miles that some rides require. Music can also be shared with another rider, and I can easily answer phone calls, though voicedialling will of course depend on your phone – my Android Galaxy S4 won’t voice dial when it’s locked, but will let me call the last number. My wife’s iPhone works better, but let’s not get into an Android vs iOS argument! The built-in FM radio is a neat addition, and while reception can occasionally be a little hitand-miss thanks to the lack of a large aerial, this is an RDS unit, so it looks for the station, rather than a frequency. This means long journeys are less of a pain to stay connected, and the

Standard speakers compared with the Pro Sound units

Interphone brilliantly tells you what station you’re listening to… “94.5, BBC R4”. The clarity is, as you’d expect, very good. At 70mph, with the C3’s visor open or closed, speech is clear and easy to understand. Flip the lid open fully, and clarity drops – speed really needs to be reduced to 60mph and below for clear discussions, though this isn’t how most UK riders will be using an intercom anyway. When a rider-to-pillion, or rider-to-rider chat is first initiated, there can occasionally be some background sound, though this disappears very quickly as the noise-cancelling sorts itself out. The connection can then be maintained throughout the ride, or easily turned on and off with a touch of the centre button. A rider-to-rider range of up to 1300m is claimed, though this will depend on the terrain and other traffic – at Cadwell Park, Carli and I found that we really needed line-of-sight for a good connection at the hilly track. The adhesive mounting bracket isn’t small, but I never ride without an Intercom

fitted now. My only grumble is that the charging socket is proprietary, so you must take the Interphone USB charging cable with you on long adventures, but having said that, the port doubles up as an auxiliary input for wired audio devices. A talk time of up to 12 hours is claimed, but if you’re listening to music at full volume, you can expect about five hours before the battery’s flat. A single unit’s RRP is £219.99, or pair is £379, but buy before the end of 2014 and prices are reduced by 20%.

★ MCM STAR LETTER OF THE MONTH ★ We’ve never had it so good The Rev Trevor Parkerson asked about crash-proofing in your December issue. I ride a 1996 R1100RT (which has just gone in for its 96,000 mile service, has had no major work apart from a new clutch, still returns 50+ mpg and uses virtually no oil). About 10 years ago I dropped it just outside the house as I was setting off for the south of France with full luggage and wife on the pillion. As I felt the bike go down on to its side and we both stepped off to avoid being trapped, visions of masses of crunched and expensive plastic went through my mind. When we’d recovered ourselves and picked it up, I discovered the awful truth. The near side mirror had been dislodged and was dangling from the indicator cable. That was it! Everything else was absolutely fine apart from

a few light marks on the nearside pannier lid. Thanks to careful design, even the mirrors can be popped back on easily. In regard to Ian Hodgkinson’s letter regarding the good old days, I think he perhaps has rose-tinted specs on: My chief memory of the BSA of my teens was stripping the engine and taking it on the bus in a carrier bag to be rebored. And always finding it sitting in a small pool of oil. My 1100RT has taken me as far as Russia and Morocco without a murmur, and I can ride 700 miles without discomfort. As for my G650GS: light; easy to handle; fun to ride; economical… I think we take too much for granted with modern bikes in terms of reliability and capability… much as we do with cars. John Gudgeon, Downham Market, Norfolk

Let’s change the law... bigger bikes are safer

Can I make a plea for a change in the law on safety grounds? The arbitrary 125cc limit condemns riders on the open road to the full horrors of the large lorries which are supposedly limited to 56mph. Even in still conditions, the turbulence from trucks is considerable, and in windy conditions, frightening and dangerous. Lots of 125cc motorcycles and scooters are flat-out around 55 to 60mph, and don’t have the power to escape the lorries on the flat, or downhill where the juggernauts often seem to have a bit of extra speed. Many of these bikes are already manufactured in 150cc capacity for other markets, so a change in the law could see our riders quickly benefit from that small but significant boost in power and speed. The economies to the manufacturers of not having to make two versions of the same machine might even result in cheaper new models. I would then suggest that the engine size restriction for motorways should rise to 149cc. By the way… keep up the good work; after 52 years in the saddle I really enjoy your sensible mix of the everyday and the exotic; reading about the Midual Type 1 made me wish I had longer legs and more money!

Richard Lee, Mitcham

Is it just me, or has the world gone mad?

Seeing the new Yamaha R1 and 200+ mph Kawasaki offerings, I truly believe the nut-jobs in charge of the motorcycle industry really have lost the plot completely. It’s akin to turkeys voting for an extra Christmas each year. Does no one in the industry actually ride motorcycles, on British roads, in British gridlock conditions and crap weather? All the industry seems baffled why sales have continued to plummet as bikes become more gizmo-infested, faster, expensive to insure, less and less relevant to any ‘normal’ road rider.

This month’s star letter wins a fantastic pair of RST Blade gloves worth £49.99. With a double-layer leather palm, carbon knuckles and pre-curved outstitched fingers it’s a great do-it-all sports glove. www.rst-moto.com

David Cunliffe, via email

I think the new sportbikes are incredibly exciting. Nobody is suggesting that we should be trying to make the most of any bike’s performance on the road, but the track day scene is increasing in popularity, and every biker loves a different style of machine (it’s why we’re all so great). It’s been a difficult time recently, and not just for motorcycling, but the buzz at this year’s Motorcycle Live makes me think we’re in for a fantastic 2015. And if the R1 and H2 aren’t your cup of tea, Ducati’s Scrambler could be helping bring biking to an even wider audience. John

Win advanced rider training!

We’ve teamed up with the British Superbike School to offer one lucky reader the chance to become a better road rider… No matter what, or where, you ride there’s always room for improvement. We recently sent Yamaha FZ6 Fazer rider Steve Lamb to the British Superbike School in Blyton Park. Despite being a keen biker since 1996, his day-to-day commute had turned riding into a grind, and he’d lost the confidence that makes motorcycling fun. Steve never had any aspirations to ride on a track, and he certainly didn’t want to be a racer, so what could BSB star Dan Linfoot teach him? It turns out that the answer was ‘a lot’. Led by ex-racer and RoSPA instructor Mike Abbott, students are given brilliant advice in a safe, controlled environment. Linfoot is just one of the tutors, and his easygoing style of learning is as suitable for a MotoGP wannabe as it is for riders like Steve.

The courses

Three levels of tuition are available: Level I is mainly for road riders, and provides the basic skills for throttle control, braking and cornering.

Enter now at

Level II develops track riding skills from Level I, which should get most riders up to at least intermediate group standard for track days, should they want to give it a try. Level III is most suited to existing track riders looking to further their skills.

Steve Lamb learns from Dan Linfoot.

The prize

The winner can choose from two separate days of training (each day is worth £289), or one day of personal one-toone Level III coaching (worth £489). The dates available are April 30, May 28, June 25, July 23, August 20 and September 24. This is a great chance to get some superb training, but if you’re not the lucky winner, book quickly as there are only 36 spaces available per date… Competition closes: January 19, 2015 Terms and Conditions available online when entering. The winner will need a full UK road licence (younger riders require either an A2 licence or an ACU licence), plus one-piece leathers or two-piece leathers with a full zip around the waist. Good quality zip-together textiles with a safety crotch strap and CE armour are the minimum requirement. Helmet must be BS or European standard approved, and gloves and boots must be in sound condition.

14 FIRST RIDE

HONDA VFR800X CROSSRUNNER £10,229 | 105bhp@10,500rpm | 55lbft@8500rpm | liquid-cooled 90° V4 Tested by Simon Hargreaves Photography by Honda THE HONDA Crossrunner, launched in 2011, was a recycled VFR800 engine and chassis with bland supermoto/adventure Euro-styling. Dynamically a good bike, it never caught on. The 2015 Crossrunner uses the revamped VFR800F engine and chassis, but now shares family looks with the adventure-styled VFR1200X Crosstourer.

Tell me about the engine

The 2015 Crossrunner uses an almost identical version of the same 782cc 90° VTEC V4 as the conventional sports touring 2015 VFR800F. It makes a claimed 105bhp at 10,000rpm and 55lb-ft of torque peaking at 8500rpm, which is 1000rpm lower than the previous Crossrunner motor thanks to minor exhaust, intake and engine management modifications. It retains all the qualities you’d expect from a V4: smooth, burbling power delivery with just enough Vgrumbling to add charismatic vibes without being intrusive or awkward. Drive is deceptively potent, with the motor producing a linear, harmonised flow of low-down grunt that doesn’t sound as aggressive as it really is – below 6750rpm, the exhaust note is whisper quiet.

But above that the engine changes character completely. Honda’s longstanding VTEC valve mechanism, which switches between two-valve, single-inlet and -exhaust valve per cylinder operation at low rpm to full, four-valve running above 6750rpm, is still present – it’s been around for 12 years, since the 2002 VFR800 (the same year the motor ditched geardriven cams and went to a conventional camchain). The VTEC idea is that a two-valve head favours low engine speed gas flow and a four-valve head favours higher rpm, giving the VFR a best-ofboth-worlds spread of torque. In reality, on early VFRs the transition between the two modes was a pronounced step in the power delivery, almost like a powerband. Successive iterations have smoothed out the switch until now, on the Crossrunner, it’s almost impossible to detect other than by the sharp change in exhaust and airbox note as the engine starts to moan with a throaty, mid-frequency rasp. Honda has been building V4 engines since the mid-1970s, when it boxed itself into a corner by doggedly insisting on developing a four-stroke engine to compete with two-strokes in

Grand Prix racing. The only way to get comparable power from a four-stroke within the 500cc, four-cylinder rules was to bend them, by creating four oval pistons that performed like an eight-cylinder motor. And the only way to package what were effectively eight cylinders on a bike was to line them up in a V. And thus Honda’s tenacious obsession with the V4 configuration was born.

By the mid-80s there were six V4s in Honda’s road bike line-up, but the world wasn’t ready and within a couple of years there was only one; the VFR750. It looked like the V4 project was over. But Honda persevered and, when MotoGP rules ‘turned’ in their favour, Honda’s V4 message was, literally, back on track. Today Honda’s range is stuffed with them: the VFR800F, 800X,

VFR1200F and the VFR1200 Crosstourer – and of course the Pan European and CTX1300.

What’s the chassis like?

Like the Crossrunner’s engine, its twin-beam aluminium frame, single-sided swingarm, conventional Showa forks with adjustable rebound and preload, adjustable rebound and remote

First ride 15 preload Pro-link Showa rear shock, ABS brakes and cast wheels (not wire, as per the VFR1200 Crosstourer) are all lifted from the 2015 VFR800F. And seeing as they all work well in that bike, it’s no surprise to find they all work well in the 800X too. In keeping with the Crossrunner’s new adventure-based styling, its suspension gets 25mm more front wheel travel and 28mm more rear wheel travel for an overall increase in ride height of 39mm which, apart from the obvious cosmetic effect, also raises the bike’s centre of gravity and improves general riding agility and steering response. So the VRF800X turns easily and naturally, capable of delicate low speed balance, swooping in and out of cars at mid-speed, and tracking a steady line at faster

pace. It’s a very easy bike to control. But it’s also a bit on the soft side; the extra weight transfer from the longer suspension travel, generated under braking or on the gas, isn’t completely handled by the bike’s damping and spring rates. So while ride quality soaking up high speed stutter bumps is excellent, low speed damping and chassis attitude over longer yumps, dips and undulations sets up a sea sick-style pitching to and fro. Increasing the damping a few clicks and turning up the preload via the remote rear adjuster takes away most of the problem, but adding a pillion and a full load of luggage will test the suspension to the limit. It’d be worth getting a fully-loaded test ride before you buy a Crossrunner, if that’s how you plan on using it.

Radial brakes are assisted by ABS.

Should I buy one?

Honda is keen to rebrand the VFR800X as an alternative to the VFR800F: the latter for riders who want their sports touring with a conventional, sporty riding position, and the former for those who want it served adventure-style with a strong family resemblance to the VFR1200 Crosstourer. It’s a long way from the previous Crossrunner, which was a curious mixture of VFR engine and chassis dressed in an anonymous set of clothes that put it somewhere between supermoto, adventure sports and roadster. It was a neither here nor there bike. At the very least, the new Crossrunner has a point. And so now there’s no reason why you shouldn’t buy one (although when it gets to its expensive, timeconsuming 16,000-mile valveclearance service you might think twice). Honda’s modern build quality might not be a patch on the stunning levels of finishing found on its mid1990s bikes, but it’s still as good as anyone else’s and better than most. The VFR800X Crossrunner costs £10,299, for which you get a comprehensive package of extras as standard. The list includes handlebar switchable 3-stage traction control, ABS, heated grips, LED lights, a 31 litre topbox, centrestand, Akrapovic

A remote preload adjuster makes life easier.

Clocks share the inverted colours of the VFR800F.

exhaust, and even a Tom Tom sat nav – all standard fitment (optional extras include Honda’s quickshifter – which is great fun – crash bars, panniers and LED fog lights). It’s an impressive spec that no other bike comes with as standard: to buy an equivalent BMW F800GS you’d be looking at over £11,000. Triumph’s Tiger 800 ABS is close, but isn’t available with a traction control option.

The riding position is classic adventure sports – a long pair of bar risers from the top yoke present the handlebars at chest height and at a nice width, giving the rider room to move around and adding a slight forward lean that resists the temptation for the rider to slump into the seat. It’s a very natural, instinctively comfortable riding position. The new clocks share the inverted colours of the VFR800F, with light segments on a black background for easy viewing in all lights. Some of the small print functions, like the average mpg, average speed etc. might need a magnifying glass but there’s plenty of info there. The 800X also gets the 800F’s traction control, three-way adjustable (including off ) from a handlebar button. It works, it’s a safety back-up, and even if it is helps you out just once, it’s worth having. A bit like ABS, which of course the Crossrunner also has as standard.

So what’s it like to ride?

The first thing to strike you about the new Crossrunner is just how easy it is to ride. Nothing interferes or intrudes with the process, to annoy or distract. Honda is good at this sort of thing. The seat height is manageable, the bars meet hands exactly where it feels best and the springs take your weight like a sofa. The engine starts up with a gentle thrum, settling into the classic V4 offbeat burble. The gearbox is positive, the brake performance is well modulated, the throttle response natural and free of snatch. It’s a hard bike to be clumsy with. The ergonomics are excellent. Seat height, like the VFR800F’s, is twoposition: the highest is suitable for sixfooters; the lowest is equivalent to the old Crossrunner and is fine for just about anyone.

16 FIRST RIDE

2015 Triumph Tiger 800 From £8499 | 94bhp @ 9250rpm 58lb-ft @ 7850rpm | 800cc liquid-cooled, inline three-cylinder

Tested by: Tony Carter Photography: Alessio Barbanti, Paul Barshon, Matteo Cavadini, Freddie Kirn DESPITE what Triumph and anyone else will try to tell you, the Tiger 800 isn’t an adventure bike. It’s much more than that. It’s also not an update – 56 changes over the previous machine make this a new model in my book. The only thing that’s stayed the same is the frame. And the name. And two bolts that hold the screen in place. Two models (plus ‘x’ variants) will be available in dealers from January – the road-biased XR and the more off-road oriented XC…

Tell me about the engine

The three-cylinder motor is quieter than the last model (launched in 2010), delivering the same 94bhp as before, but that peak now arrives at 9250rpm (down from 9300rpm). Torque is unchanged at 58lb-ft at 7570rpm. The bike feels more eager when you crack open the throttle thanks to the new ride-by-wire system (so a lighter throttle action too). And the newly used 675cc Daytona engine parts. And the new alternator, which has a 47% reduction in inertia. Elsewhere in the new engine there’s a change to the cam profiles, increasing lift for more engine efficiency. In fact, Triumph claims that fuel consumption has improved by a huge 21%: on the semi-urban cycle defined by the United States FTP75 regulation, the new Tiger 800 delivered 58mpg. On the European GTR2 test cycle, economy improved by a still impressive 17% from 55mpg

to 65mpg, meaning a potential range of up to 272 miles. The company’s Daytona 675 gearbox parts give the bike sportsprecision gear selection, and a smoother action during changes (Triumph also claims this to be a more reliable off-road set-up).

What’s the chassis like?

The tubular steel trellis frame is the same on the new Triumph Tiger 800 as on the previous bike, but it now gets a titanium coloured powdercoated finish. The road-targeted XR gets Showa 43mm upside-down forks, with 180mm travel, while the XC carries fully adjustable WP 43mm upside-down forks with 220mm of travel. The rear sees the same brand swaps, with the off-road aspirations of the XC gaining 215mm of rear wheel travel, compared to the XR’s 170mm. The Showa unit is adjustable hydraulically for preload, while the WP can be tweaked for compression and rebound damping, as well as preload. Both bikes have twin 308mm floating discs up front, gripped by Nissin two-pot calipers with switchable ABS. The bars have been moved for more control at low speeds and to give the rider more room; on the XR they’re 5.5mm forward, 18mm up and are 2mm per side wider. On the XC they’re 0.7mm forward and 14.5mm up. Both bikes allow you to adjust the bars backwards and forwards by up to 20mm.

Switchable ABS is standard on all versions of the Tiger 800. The seat (with 2.75 litres of storage underneath it) can be set between 810 and 830mm on the XR, with the XC offering 840 to 860mm. There’s also 10mm less footrest rubber for more legroom.

Should I buy one?

Both the XR and XC variants of the Tiger 800 are capable on every terrain.

Yes, you should. The real question is which one it should be. The XC gives a more refined feel, and I reckon is the bike to go for if you want to explore a bit more – off-road the electronics really calm things down without getting in the way, so you can go greenlaning should you fancy it. The XR is refined on the road and usable at 2mph or 120mph without problem. Both bikes have cruise control (a revised version of that fitted to the Triumph Explorer 1200). The XRx and XCx gain three ride settings: Road, Off-road and Rider. Road and Off-road reconfigure the bike for different surfaces via preset options, while Rider allows the user to fine-tune the set-up to suit their tastes exactly. The new ride-by-wire (no mechanical connection between the twist-grip and the throttle bodies) looks after the traction control and all the clever stuff, but also gives a very light and precise throttle action.

So what’s it like to ride? The XRx is the bike designed more for road use…

…while the XCx is the taller, off-road biased bike.

Our test route in Spain took us past massive, solid, orangey-hued slabs of purest geology to the right of the road. All jutting out, and aggressively stabbing you in the fear gland. On the

The stylish clocks are typical Triumph – clean and easy to read. left was a perfunctory Armco-type barrier that could maybe stop a runaway shopping cart allowed to roll down the hill for a few feet. Maybe. The drop off the edge of the road was anything up to a couple of hundred feet. Yet the XR’s suspension, ABS and traction control made it fun, not terrifying. The electronics are easy to access and couldn’t be faulted; not once did the systems even appear on my radar while I was riding as hard as I could. But I know they were working away because at high speed on the Ronda road – with the bike leant over in fourth gear – I deliberately grabbed a handful of throttle. The little orange light on the instrument panel flashed away to tell me that various clever electronic goblins were saving my skin from a high-side, and I just carried on with riding as if all that smoothness was down to me. It wasn’t. The power is wonderfully linear all the way from 4000 up to just past 9000rpm but it’s fun to let the motor spin on and stutter on the 10,000rpm redline – if only for the howl from the Hinckley triple. It’s obvious there’s more room on the saddle. I’m 5ft 8in with a 28in inside leg, and the changes to the seat, footrest and handlebar position mean that on standard settings the 800 actually feels roomier than its 1200cc stable mate; the Explorer. Two days on the bike were a doddle, without the need to stretch a leg once. The seat is excellent and the tank lets you get a good grip with the knees when you up the pace.

The brakes are fantastic. The Showa suspension on the XR isn’t quite as sophisticated or luxurious as the simply gorgeous WP units on the XC, but on the road the XC’s set-up does take a beat longer to settle into a hard corner compared to the XR, which is worth noting. I like the WP units but the Showa’s simple arrangement just has the edge if – like most of us – you’re a more road-biased rider. The dash is easy to read and typical Triumph fare, with digital readouts and tacho dial. The handguards are terrific, but the screen is useless in stock trim. Fortunately, the larger aftermarket one is among the best I’ve ever used. The fuelling is spot-on, the sound from the motor intoxicating and the overall look of the bike wouldn’t be out of place in either a Welsh enduro or a jaunt through Kensington High Street. This isn’t an adventure bike. It’s much more than that. It’s a tick list of everything you could want from a motorcycle and then some. I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t enjoy the new Triumph Tiger 800 in any of its forms. Try one.

CLASSIC CHOICE AT NEWARK FOR THE NEW YEAR

THE most wonderful thing about Classic Bike Guide magazine is the sheer variety of old bikes we share with our readers every month – absolutely any age of classic motorcycle, from any country and in any condition, can make an appearance on our pages. The Carole Nash Classic Bike Guide Winter Classic event, which takes place on Saturday, January 3, and Sunday, January 4, 2015, follows exactly the same philosophy. So shake off the mid-winter blues, and join us at Newark Showground, where you’ll find an extensive selection of old bikes to admire in six indoor halls, tucked away from the worst of the wet ’n’ windy weather. Private entrants and club members compete for a range of concours trophies, kudos and cash prizes. British, European, Japanese and American classic machines will be considered for awards which cover an entire century of motorcycling, from the vintage era through to the modern age. We’ll acknowledge the restorers who spend hundreds of hours bringing their bikes back to life, and

the home engineers who create the most amazing specials in their sheds. There’s also a specific award for the Best Unrestored machine, recognising how rare it is these days to find classic motorcycles that are still in their original condition. A select few of the bikes on display will also be chosen to appear in CBG in the future – an extra bonus for the proud owners. Racing star John Reynolds is guest of honour at the event, and he’ll be handing out the concours awards at the closing ceremony. Reynolds will be interviewed on stage by Steve Plater during the weekend, and the triple British Superbike champ will also be available to sign autographs and chat with his fans. Once you’ve admired all the bikes on display, it’s time to make sure your own classic is ready to ride when the weather turns warmer. Trade experts will be on hand to help with workshop techniques and tools, whether you need something as specialist as aluminium welding, a top-notch paint job, or just a specific spanner. You’ll find stalls offering genuine old-bike

jumble and rare spares, alongside new and upgraded components and accessories; speedos, LED lighting, electronic ignition, anti-ethanol fuel systems, luggage and more. If you need new riding kit for the coming season then look out for bargain leathers, waterproofs and end-of-line items, or if it’s knowledge you seek then you’ll find it in the form of old books, manuals and those allimportant parts lists. On top of all that lot – yes, there’s still more – you’ll find an entire hall dedicated to the best classic and custom scooters on the scene. Not only do these guys compete for their own array of awards sponsored by Rock Oil, but they even vie for a ‘Farthest Travelled’ prize. In January! That deserves respect – as does the ingenuity and engineering expertise which is incorporated into many of these tricksy two-wheelers. So start the New Year at Newark, where you’ll find classic bikes to suit all tastes. See you there! Frank Westworth Editor, Classic Bike Guide

Savour the wealth of beautiful classic finery on display Well, you’ve barely had time to digest the last of the turkey leftovers and release that final mulled wine burp, and here you are revelling again. There are definitely worse ways of seeing in the New Year than being here in Newark savouring the classic finery on display. So welcome once again to the increasingly popular Carole Nash Classic Bike Guide Winter Classic, first stop on what is a busy 2015 show itinerary for the Carole Nash team. No doubt you are looking forward as much as we are to the guest of honour John Reynolds. In the company of Supersports and TT Seniors winning Steve Plater, he’ll be sharing tales

from the track, recalling those three BSB championship titles and that body breaking Brands Hatch smash that brought a fantastic career to such an abrupt end. I anticipate Steve and John will deliver a captivating discussion! Of course John’s appearance is but the glorious icing on a particularly heart cake with the showground chock-ablock with some glorious, beautifully restored classic and vintage machinery, plus the autojumble, which is to enthusiasts what the Next Boxing Day sale is to the terminally fashion conscious! Being a show with a difference, the Winter Classic

also welcomes once again the highly popular Scooter World. While there’s more to see than you can shake an oily dipstick at, please also find time to visit the Carole Nash stand. The team will, as ever, be on hand to answer your insurance queries and dish out the freebies! Rebecca Donohue Head of Marketing Carole Nash

24 FIRST RIDE

MV Agusta Brutale RR and Dragster RR From £11,599 | 140bhp @ 13,100rpm | 63lb-ft @ 10,100rpm 798cc liquid-cooled triple Tested by: Roland Brown Photography: Milagro

MV AGUSTA found itself with an unexpected hit after launching the Dragster 800 at the start of 2014. Essentially a slightly more radical version of the Brutale 800 equipped with new handlebars, a one-plus-one seat and fatter rear tyre, the Dragster captured the imagination and snarled out of showrooms as fast as the firm from Varese could produce it, despite a higher price. That success helps to explain MV’s decision to push things further with two even more outrageous follow-up triples. The first is the Brutale RR, a hotted-up version of the Brutale 800 with more powerful 140bhp engine, firmed-up chassis and MV’s most sophisticated electronics package yet. Alongside it is the Dragster RR, which updates the Dragster in similar fashion and adds a pair of uniquely eye-catching wirespoked wheels.

Tell me about the engine

The two RR models share the latest version of MV’s 798cc three-cylinder engine. The 12-valve unit with its contra-rotating crankshaft is mechanically unchanged, but its intake system is revamped with a reshaped airbox, larger 50mm throttle bodies and twin instead of single injectors per cylinder. The three stubby silencers look unchanged but they’re tweaked to breathe more freely. The result is increased midrange torque, and a 15bhp boost in peak power to a maximum of 140bhp at 13,100rpm. These triples’ electronics package is subtly updated and features a significant addition. Alongside further revised fuelling incorporating four riding modes, one of which is customisable, the RR models are fitted with a standard fitment quick-

shifter which, in conjunction with the slipper clutch, allows clutchless changes on both up- and down-shifts. Like the standard Brutale and Dragster, the RR models get an eight-level traction control system, adjustable via a button on the left bar.

What’s the chassis like?

There’s no change to the basic chassis layout, based on a compact steel-tube-and-aluminium frame and single-sided swingarm. Suspension at both ends is firmed up slightly to cope with the extra performance, the Dragster RR’s slightly more so. Forks are new 43mm USD Marzocchis with lighter, gold-anodised sliders, and supertough DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coated stanchions that are also made from aluminium, saving a total of over a kilo in weight. The Dragster RR gets new five-spoke cast wheels but the outstanding feature of either bike is arguably the Dragster RR’s pair of wire-spoked 17-inchers, which are like nothing previously seen on a streetbike. Manufactured by a Milanese firm that normally supplies the auto industry, the wire-spokers are slightly heavier than the standard cast wheels but have less inertia, due to more of their weight being in the machined-from-solid aluminium centres.

Steering damper is an essential.

FIRST RIDE 25

The Brutale and Dragster RR are mechanically similar, sharing the same engine, chassis and electronics. Both models also feature an uprated brake system that combines Brembo four-pot radial calipers with Bosch ABS, incorporating an antistoppie function called RLM (for Rear wheel Lift-up Mitigation). The Dragster RR uses the standard model’s bar-end mounted mirrors, which are too wide in traffic but give a better view than the Brutale model’s conventional mirrors.

Should I buy one?

If you’re looking for a nice, riderfriendly middleweight then steer well clear, but if you’re an experienced rider looking for something quick, light, stylish and exciting then the MVs have got to be on your short-list. Neither is remotely practical, especially the Dragster RR with its one-plus-slim-one seat, and their firm suspension can make life tricky on a bumpy road. Like all MVs they’re not designed to be cheap, either. The Brutale RR costs £11,599, which is £1800 more than the standard Brutale 800. The Dragster RR’s fancy wheels contribute to its higher still price of £13,299 (against the standard Dragster’s £10,999).

But how do you put a price on the exclusivity and unique Italian style of the Dragster RR? Both triples are beautifully styled and finished, and they’re seriously rapid too. That revised 798cc motor is gloriously smooth and powerful, has heaps of character and sounds wonderful. The chassis are light, agile and taut. If you want unmistakable looks, straight-line performance and charisma from a naked middleweight, the Dragster RR is the current state-of-the-art, and the slightly more sensible Brutale RR runs it a close second.

So what are they like to ride?

In a word, exciting. There’s never a dull moment on either of these powerful, responsive and firmly suspended machines. In a straight line there’s very little difference between the two. With that 140bhp output, ample midrange torque and short 1380mm wheelbase, a tweak of the throttle is enough to send either MV shooting forward enthusiastically as the smooth-revving triple motor responds to every command, helped by fuelling that was good, apart from slightly uneven running at about 5000rpm in town.

The three main engine modes are Sport, Normal and Rain, and can be selected very easily using the starter button. Even Normal gives seriously crisp throttle response and fierce acceleration, backed up by a soulful howl from the pipes down by your right boot as you flick through the box with the ride-by-wire throttle on the stop. It’s vital to grip the bars tightly and keep your weight well forward because both bikes are seriously lively and very keen to launch into spontaneous second-gear wheelies, which adds to the entertainment. Of the two, the Dragster is better in this respect because its short and distinctively shaped seat holds the rider well forward on the bike, with lots of weight over the front wheel. However, the seat doesn’t allow you to move around much or hang off the bike easily, which I found restricting in corners, especially because I’m tall. And being unable to shift my weight rearwards didn’t help under braking. The Brembo setup gives superbly powerful stopping but I found the Dragster RR’s ABS cutting in slightly more often than expected, presumably because it

was trying to prevent the rear from lifting. One electronic aid that worked flawlessly was the new quick-shift auto-blipper, which allows clutchless changes both up and down through the six-speed box. This was excellent on both RRs, as with BMW’s latest S1000RR, giving reliable and very quick down-shifts with minimal effort. The blipper is enabled with Sport mode and you can also use it with the other riding modes via the Custom function, which allows you to select from any of the settings for throttle response, engine braking and more. Both these bikes have excellent chassis, with identical steel-andaluminium frames, high quality suspension and racy geometry. With a shared 168kg dry weight figure they’re both seriously light too. That makes for agile and responsive handling but both triples’ Marzocchi forks and Sachs shock are set up firm, which made the MVs hard work at times on some very bumpy roads in Tuscany. Either bike would probably have been very much at home if we’d been allowed a few laps of the nearby Mugello racetrack but they struggled at times as the firm suspension passed on every imperfection to the bars and seat, sometimes so much that it was difficult to keep precise control of the light-action throttle. The Dragster, with its firmer suspension and fatter, 200-section rear Pirelli, was affected more. At least both bikes have an adjustable steering damper, which helped keep the bars pointing in the right direction as the front wheel went light under acceleration out of the bends. The Dragster’s fat tyre put plenty of rubber on the road, too, and even the

Brutale RR with its 180-section rear Pirelli Diablo Rosso II was not short of grip. Neither bike was remotely relaxing but both provided plenty of entertainment on straight and twisty roads alike. And there’s not much point in complaining about the Dragster’s rear tyre compromising its agility, because like the cut-down seat it wasn’t intended to be sensible or efficient, it was put there mainly to add to the bike’s sense of drama and style, which it undoubtedly does. There are plenty of bikes that would have covered those bumpy roads more calmly; some even faster too. But not many would have turned more heads, been more fun or dumped more adrenaline into my bloodstream than MV’s pair of badboy naked triples.

Both bikes feature radial calipers and ABS as standard fitment.

Moto Gymkhana Carli Ann Smith finds out just how agile her long-term test KTM 390 Duke can be… Photography: Joe Dick CHANNELLING my inner salsa dancer, I was confidently slaloming between cones just five metres apart – it’s all in the hips apparently. Not much earlier, looking at them had filled me with dread. That’s what four hours with a professional ‘Moto Gymkhana-ist’ can do for you… Okay, I’ll admit it, I’ve spent far too much of my life watching clips on YouTube of Moto Gymkhana: big Harleys making it round tight corners, and bikes turning on a sixpence in the rain. I could do that, couldn’t I?! My KTM Duke weighs just 140kg, so what better machine to give it a try on? There are four levels in total – each step increasing in difficulty – so with no previous experience I’d signed up

to level one as a taster with the crew at MotoGymkhana.org Pulling onto the ‘launch pad’ at Donington Park, I saw the cones and patted the 390 to let it know it was going to be a fun afternoon, while at the same time feeling slightly apprehensive. After a safety briefing and introductions, we were let loose on the track to see how we got on – the time we set is what we’d be trying to improve throughout the day. My first attempt was a joke; I kept going too wide and ended up losing sight of where I was meant to be. Three instructors showed us the ropes – each just as knowledgeable – giving each of us advice before we

What is Moto Gymkhana? INVENTED in Japan around 1975, Moto Gymkhana is a riding skills challenge set against the clock around an obstacle-laden track. Competitors take it in turns to follow a set course marked out with different coloured cones – known as pylons – with the aim to complete it in the fastest time. It involves accurate control, bursts of speed and intense braking – not to mention extreme rider skill. UK courses run throughout the year.

It’s fun, but a lot harder than it looks!

headed into the next exercise. Throttle control sounds simple, doesn’t it? That’s what we all thought until we were asked to go up the side of the course and come off the gas, without closing the throttle completely. There was no hiding either as they could tell from the noise of the engine if we were doing it properly. This was all about keeping our ride smooth. I found it quite difficult on the single cylinder and the engine braking – which I usually love – wasn’t helping me. ‘Look, lean and roll’ was the next part – round and round the outside of the course turning corners. Again, sounds simple, but doing it properly isn’t. We all know that the bike goes where we look, but the difference

was all about releasing tension in your shoulders and arms and involved a broom handle that represented your handlebars. Unknowingly, riders tend to grip the bars tighter than they need to, instead of loosening their grip and anticipating where the bars will go. It’s not about releasing your grip completely, but it’s the key to working in partnership with the bike. I was pretty much infatuated with the Duke when I first got it, but my initial lust has definitely blossomed into love. I rode home smiling at what we’d just done. I’m a long way off some of the videos I’ve seen, but the improvement and the amount I had learnt was huge. The lessons and tips I’d picked up will help with everyday riding too.

between looking and moving your whole head is phenomenal. So really the bike likes to follow your nose. We then tackled the slaloms – the 10 metre cones were the starting place and gradually after more runs I found I was comfortable doing them. “If you’re feeling brave then have a go at the five metre cones,” said the instructor. So I did. It was a real life Karate Kid moment – it all clicked into place as I worked with the Duke to manoeuvre around the narrowly spaced cones. Dabbing the rear disc brake, it gave me precise and exact control when I wanted it, the 390 responded immediately. Strangely, the part that I found most useful was an exercise off the bike. It

28 KNOW-HOW

Clever thinking John Milbank visits Motolug to find out why towing a motorcycle doesn’t have to be a pain in the backside... Words and Photos: John Milbank DISHWASHERS, tumble dryers and motorcycle trailers. Buy one, and you’ll forever wonder how you managed without it. Since owning a trailer, I’ve been amazed how much use it’s had – for track days, picking up a rash late-night eBay purchase, or just helping out mates. Most motorcycle trailers (my own old Erde included) are basically a centre tray, two wheels and a standard hitch. How easy it is to get the bike on and off is down to the design of the axles, the rear lighting units and the ramp fixings. Once the bike’s up there, you need to hold it in place with one hand while you get the ratchet straps on to secure it. I don’t mind admitting that I struggle to load and unload large bikes on my own, and the space the thing takes up in our back garden is very irritating.

Despite a larger wheelbase, the Motolug packs away easily... unlike my Erde PM310 trailer

Motolug’s design is different. The entire trailer acts as a ramp – attach it to your vehicle’s tow ball, then just pull the two sprung index pins in the unique, clever hitch assembly to tilt the main beam towards the ground, ready to push or power your bike up. A loading system captures the front wheel, holding the bike upright and leaving you free to take your time fitting the straps that hold the bike in transit. When you’re finished, the trailer can be taken apart quickly and easily – without any tools – and stored in the shed, or even your car’s boot. The system was designed in the UK in 2005. Called Bikelug, demand got too high for the engineering business that created it, so sales director Julia Nangle bought the rights, and after changing the name to a more European market-friendly Motolug in 2007, the company’s Warwickshire

A Motolug acts as its own ramp, and holds the bike once it’s in place... no assistance needed!

The entire trailer fits into the boot of most car withouth any hassle

workshop is now busy building 40 to 50 trailers every month. “There are about 6000 Motolugs and Bikelugs on the road,” says Julia. “The majority of our customers have been classic owners, with some travelling all over Europe buying and selling bikes. One such gentleman bought a Motolug from us at the Classic Motorcycle Mechanics show in Stafford – he’d just picked up a new bike at the Bonhams auction.

“We’re seeing a lot more track-day fans buying now, as well as people touring Europe in motorhomes, and we modified the design in 2012 to gain European Commission Whole Vehicle Type Approval.” All new trailers must have ECWVTA to be sold across Europe (where in some cases trailers have to be registered), covering everything from the position of the lamps to the overall design and production.

Despite the Motolug being built in the UK and exported to Norway, Australia and the Netherlands, it’s all done by a team of three. Everything is sourced from UK suppliers (even the British-made Britax tail-lights), with the steel being laser cut, folded, zincplated and powder coated in Britain. “Because we build it all in-house, we check everything – if it’s not right, we can isolate it from the production run,” says Ian Tilly, trailer technician.

KNOW-HOW 29

The trailers’ hubs include grease nipples for easy maintenance

Ian assembles one of the main beams in the Warwickshire workshop “We take pride in our work, and love it when customers call in saying how great their trailer is. We recently heard from a very happy guy who’s had his for two and a half years, and put over 7500 miles on it already.”

Trailer choice

There are four trailers in the range, but all of them can be easily taken apart, and all of them make bike loading easy. Both the SE and SE Plus are single bike trailers, capable of carrying machines up to 350kg (a Pan European weighs 283kg) with a maximum of a 220mm wide rear tyre, but the Plus has heavier-duty suspension, allowing it to be converted to a two-bike trailer if you need more capacity later. The TE is the ready-built two-bike trailer, with a total load capacity of 560kg, and then there’s the HDE. This longer, wider unit will transport

motorcycles up to 450kg (so it’ll easily take a Goldwing), and is a good choice for customs with really fat (up to 240mm) rear tyres or with a longer wheelbase. A quick call to Motolug will confirm which trailer is right for you.

Build quality

Maintaining your trailer is a simple matter of keeping it clean, and greasing the bearings every so often, which is easy thanks to grease nipples fitted to the hubs that are accessible with the wheels in place. It’s this attention to detail that makes a quality product, and the thought that’s gone into each part of the design is obvious as you watch one being assembled in the workshop. “We looked into galvanising the trailers,” operations manager Tom Rendall tells me, “but the thickness can be very hit and miss, so

The trailers are welded in-house, before being zinc-plated and powder-coated

Each trailer is assembled and checked by hand

everything is zinc plated”. It’s a compromise, but if you want a truly compact, portable trailer, hosing it off every so often is a small price to pay. Many trailer users will be accustomed to lashing their bikes down to a front spar. On the Motolug, the bike is strapped from the front and back to the trailer’s axles. Combined with the superb loading system, your motorcycle is as secure here as it is on any other trailer. Call in for a demonstration and you’ll be able to chat with Julia, Ian and Tom, knowing these are the three people who built each and every unit. My current trailer is an Erde PM310 – these cost £493, not including a ramp, and can carry bikes up to 240kg. I left the workshop with a Motolug on loan, packed in the boot to test, so expect a review soon. My Erde is already up for sale. www.motolug.com

Q

I have a few bikes, but I use a classic Vespa scooter to pootle – or poodle – to work on. The word is fairly apt because it was actually a poodle which ran out in front of me, knocking me off my bike. Pedro the poodle was fine thankfully, but I managed to break my arm, resulting in six weeks off work. I have my own hair salon business, and while my husband has been a godsend, letting him loose on the local ladies’ hair is not an option. The owner of Pedro runs the butcher’s; he said the dog ran off while in the park, and that it’s just one of those things: “You can’t sue a dog anyway,” he said. He offered me a turkey for Christmas, but didn’t answer when I said about my damaged bike, my broken arm and loss of earnings. What can I do?

A

You can’t take the dog to court. However, you can start court proceedings against the owner if needs be – the butcher has a duty to make sure his dog doesn’t cause damage. If the court finds the butcher has breached his duty as a dog owner, you will be awarded more than the ‘poultry’ amount he has offered. As for actually getting compensation, it may well be the case that Pedro is insured. If not, the butcher may have the cash to pay you and/or property you can get an order against.

razzed off for a spin on my own into a different field (we’d been told to stick together). Unfortunately I didn’t see a ditch, and clattered off, breaking my leg. I want to sue the training school, but no solicitor will take on the case as apparently I didn’t follow the rules. Surely the training school should have to pay as they had a duty to make sure riders are safe. Am I right? From what you have said you are completely A wrong. If there has been a safety briefing and you were told to ride in one field, but decided to

razz off into another, it seems to me you are at fault. You can’t just sue people because you got hurt through your own stupidity; you decided to undertake a fun, but risky, activity, then you didn’t follow the rules and got hurt. Man up. It’s like telling someone the oven’s hot; they touch the oven, they get burnt and they moan they have a blistered hand. If everyone who got hurt could successfully sue companies when they ignored the rules, there would be no boxing clubs, no sailing clubs and no one hiring out of motorbikes. Sounds like a pretty dull, bubblewrapped world to me.

My brother was getting married and I arranged his stag do in Wales. The plan was a day out at an off-road motorbike school, and then a night out on the beer. We rocked up, had the safety briefing, got given all the gear and then rode out for instruction on off-road riding. The group was of mixed abilities, so the instructor was taking things slow. As an experienced rider on- and offroad, after about an hour I was a bit bored, so I

Suzuki DR350 Every month, Steve Cooper from the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club picks out another great example of classic oriental metal

Single-cylinder motorcycles have been back in vogue for quite a while now, courtesy in no small part to a pair of Teutonic factories that have apparently somehow reinvented the genre. In point of fact, singles haven’t been out of fashion since Yamaha catalysed the market back in 1976, with the seminal XT500.

Sitting quietly on the back-burner is a motorcycle that’s been ridden around the world countless times, campaigned in enduros very successfully at amateur level, greenlaned, occasionally trialled, and used as a stalwart commuter. The strange thing is, very few people

seem to recall one of Japan’s best single cylinder four-stroke singles; the humble DR350. Starting life back in 1991, the bike remained pretty much unchanged other than the addition of an electric start around 1995. This update elevated the bike from ‘pretty useful’ status, up to and beyond ‘bloody marvellous’. At last it was possible to ride off-road, stall, crash, dismount or simply stop and not have to breathlessly faff around trying to reawaken the beast with a slimecovered size nine. Although never going to set the world alight with a humble 30bhp and 22lb-ft of torque, the bike has enough to do the job, and still hold a little in reserve. Even if the power levels are only just post-learnercompliant, those that have travelled the globe off-road on a DR350 have seldom wanted substantially more oomph.

When launched, the bike was part of Suzuki’s second generation of fourstroke singles, and more than just a substantial upgrade to the old SP370/400s. Although apparently not particularly radical, the machine received input from American motocross expert Al Baker; Suzuki’s aim being to deliver a cost-effective, sub-130kg trail bike. If you needed testament to Suzuki’s commitment to the project, know that from the off, modern technology was wholly embraced; the swingarm was actually a composite structure – the extruded arms bonded to an alloy casting within the arm itself, using a hi-tech two-part epoxy adhesive. Yes, there are bolts on show, but they’re purely from the assembly stage and allegedly don’t have any structural function. Plough through online reviews and you’ll probably find countless armchair enduro experts vetoing the little DR. The normal excuses are low power, high weight and poor finish. As it’s only a 350, would you expect much beyond 100bhp/litre? And in terms of mass you might well argue that the bike can actually take a knock and not write off some lightweight flimsy chassis. After all, it was designed to be mass-produced and used by amateurs. And with regards to the finish, it was pretty much par for the course back then. Check out an equivalent Yamaha XT350 and chances are it’ll be just as bad... or good! The motor is a simple, single overhead cam, designed for longevity, but it’s possible to take the motor out to 385, 400 or even 441cc, delivering all the power most normal people could ever use off-road. Larger carbs are also readily available pre-jetted. Serious dirt-riding enthusiasts fit Suzuki RM motocross forks and an

aftermarket rear shock. Further vindication for the six-speed power unit has to be its use in Suzuki’s factory cafe racer; the Goose. The DR350 ran until 2000, when it was replaced by the much more focused DR-Z400, but £1700 spent on a DR350 is the cheapest way to go offroading reliably.

Japan’s relationship with the fourstroke single goes right back to the 1950s, but its biggest success has to be Honda’s 50cc C100 Cub. The original push-rod motor eschewed an oil pump in favour of an oil flinger on the con rod, and worm drive feed to the top. The design proved to be bomb-proof. From here on, the Japanese have produced four-strokes of every capacity, right up to Suzuki’s DR800. Some have reached iconic status such as Yamaha’s seminal XT/SR500 while others have left sour tastes in the mouths of their creators, such as Honda’s Ascot FT500. Even now, bikes such as the XT660 make up a serious segment of Yamaha’s sales, and together with its awesome WR450F the future of the four-stroke single has never looked brighter. Within the VJMC there’s a small but significant core of singles fans, running everything from Honda XL250 Motosports right through to SRZ660 Yamahas. When a company puts a 660cc motor into one of its 125cc chassis’ it’s only natural it’ll attract enthusiasts! 38 USED BIKE RIDE

USED TEST:

2012 Triumph Tiger 800 Dealer’s price: £5899 | 95bhp | 58lb-ft Liquid-cooled triple Words and photos: Bob Pickett

THE Triumph Tiger 800 is the smaller brother of the long-running Tiger 1050 big trailie. The 800 is the road-biased model, with an XC variant available for those with off-road pretensions.

Give me some spec

A tubular steel cradle frame holds an 800cc, liquid-cooled threecylinder engine, putting out 58lb-ft of torque at 7850 revs with maximum power of 95bhp at 9300 revs. Stopping comes courtesy of 308mm floating discs, Nissin 2piston sliding calipers at the front and a 255mm disc, Nissin single piston sliding caliper at the rear, (Switchable ABS model available). The bike tested featured an aftermarket taller screen and hand protectors.

So what’s it like to ride?

The normal concern with a ‘tallrounder’ like the Tiger 800 is seat height. But even at the highest

Dealer details

With thanks to Jack Lilley (Triumph) Romford for the loan of the bike. 01708 752111 / www.jacklilley.com

setting (810mm/32in) I was able to (just) get the balls of my (29in) feet down on either side, or one foot firmly down with minimal lean. But at the lowest setting – it is really simple to change this – I could get both feet flat. The Tiger 800 is a joy to ride. Those three cylinders deliver useable power anywhere in the rev range; the gearing allows the lazy left foot to leave them alone (in day-to day riding you could get away with just using the first three of the six available gears). The neutral riding position is all day comfortable, but you can lean into it (or adjust the saddle to tilt you forward) for more involved riding. It is a good town bike, sitting you tall in the saddle and well balanced. This is where the seat height comes in, if commuting I would set it to the lowest position to cover those inevitable sudden stops. The brakes gave immediate confidence and supply the stopping power progressively, though if braking hard a dab on the rear is appreciated and lessens fork dive. On the test route is one section of A-road with a surface that looks a little like a patchwork quilt. Normally I avoid it, but I took the Tiger straight over it. And it just

rippled across, giving feedback but no bumps or bangs. Faster A-roads and motorways were despatched easily as the midrange ate up the miles, but at motorway pace there was a spot of buffeting from the screen. The Tiger shone on the B-roads; I just stuck it in second and let it glide from bend to bend with the suspension soaking up anything that came its way.

What nick is it in?

Two years old and 13,000 miles on the clock, it was spotless. The only

thing I did find was what looked like a replacement bracket to hold the seat in place, but the dealer was going to look at this and possibly replace it.

Should I buy it?

The dealer wants £5899 for a 2012 bike with 13,100 miles on the clock and a full service history, all at Triumph dealers. Looking at 2012 models on sale at other dealers of the same age and similar mileage (couple of thousand either way) revealed a range from £5500 to £6000.
