A few weeks ago Dave Robinson, Pete Muxlow and Keith Beacroft called in to OBM at the start of their End to End charity run for Macmillan Cancer Support and Prostate Cancer UK. We caught up with them at Wickenby Airfield after the successful conclusion of their run, and Vintage Skunk Works allowed us to pose with a restored Second World War Auster Mk.V which is based at the Lincolnshire airfield. Read how they got on inside.

obmnews The

basement Sometimes the oddest things provide the catalyst to spring into action and turn piles of bits into working motorcycles… or at least launch the project. For instance, 2013 has been largely intense for me, for reasons outside motorcycling, and things in The Basement have been neglected a bit. Like everyone, I’ve always got something in there that could do with fettling a wee bit, always something that is in need of attention or a full scale rebuild but it’s been sealing wax and string this year. However, the new lad on CBG pitched up next to my desk with a B31 bottom end; he was going to see if he could assemble a complete B31 by trawling through autojumbles etc. Any amount of people have done this over the years but is it still possible? At least with a BSA B31 there’s the advantage that loads of the things have been made over the model lifespan and I suppose if you’re not an originality fetishist a lot of parts are interchangeable too. However, this set me thinking that I should do something with the parts in my workshop. There’s quite a mix of stuff there – as I’ve a Triumph, there are plenty of parts kicking around, including enough ‘C’ range unit bits to make a bike feasible. The BSA B40 has largely resisted temptation to reproduce… a bit like the giant Panda species, though I did notice a pair of BSA forks peeking out of the stuff on the top shelf… influence from a certain Bultaco world trials champ has inspired me to acquire a spare frame that can be modded to a slightly better spec than the standard one and of course there are the Can-Am bits. Having built the Can-Am we offered as a prize in Classic Dirt Bike and being mightily impressed with it, I was offered the bones of another. I kicked it around the workshop for ages, doing this and that to it but nothing major. Then once CBG boy stated his intent, I had the Can-Am engine off to the specialist in short order… Looks like my nights will be taken up from now on.

Robbie Allan 1941 – 2013

I

t is with regret we report the passing of Robbie Allan, on August 14, aged 72, after being diagnosed with terminal cancer in January this year. Born on June 21, 1941 Robbie’s formative years were in the Aberdeenshire village of Garlogie and his early motorcycling exploits were with the Bon Accord MCC in Aberdeen. Robbie lived a life packed full of motorcycling achievements both as a rider and organiser while retaining an enduring enthusiasm for two and three wheels. On road, off-road, slow or fast, there wasn’t an aspect of the sport not tried by Robbie, generally with a deal of

success (he’s pictured right in typical action) and once the Allan mind was made up to do something, that ‘something’ got done. Take his entry into the Paris-Dakar, aged 65, when many have given up active competition as a ‘for instance’. Robbie’s legendary organisational skills were honed long before engines powered his two wheel exploits as he had pedal powered events organised in the village for brothers, friends and himself. Robbie transferred these skills – skills which translated as deciding what needed doing and finding the best person to do it – to the motorcycle sports

world, organising scrambles and trials and then on to shows where he could count launching the Scottish Motorcycle Show as one of his achievements. Latterly it was Tinto Park Moto track he was most proud of and it was at this facility, on

August 19, a crowd that looked like a who’s who of Scottish motorcycling joined Robbie’s family in celebrating his life. Robbie is survived by his wife Margaret and children Robbie, Jennifer and Olive. He was laid to rest at Kintore Cemetery on August 20.

Gaffer’s Gallop BMF’s Tailend, sprinkled with Stardust enters final stage of preparation

We’ve been running regular updates of the Gaffer’s Gallop re-run in this its Diamond Anniversary year and the team involved is on the last stages of preparation… the odd full engine rebuild, that sort of thing. Next month – to match the original October 1953 date when Triumph’s senior managers, Bob Fearon, Edward Turner, and Alec Masters rode three new 149cc Terrier machines from Land’s End to John o’ Groats – a team of three Cub and Terrier connected people will set out from Land’s End and head north. The three will be Brett Baxter – a man who just loves the little Terrier, Mike Estall – VMCC Tiger Cub & Terrier Marque Specialist and author of the Triumph Tiger Cub Bible and Jacqui Watson – a dedicated Terrier enthusiast and editor of the Cub Mag devoted to Tiger Cubs & Terriers. At 11.40am on October 6 (the exact 60th anniversary), three riders, plus at least three more on other Terriers, will start from the Victoria Hotel, Roche. These three, plus yet more riders on Terriers and Tiger Cubs, will ride from Roche to Land’s End. All will then go northwards as far as they wish or the whole way to John o’ Groats. If you ride a Terrier or Tiger Cub and would like to take part in this unique event, please contact Brett Baxter. The purpose is twofold. The first is purely for the fun of it and to commemorate the 60th anniversary, but more than that, it is also to raise money for charity. Any donations will be equally distributed among the following: Prostate Cancer UK – A charity and research centre for men with this condition. The Primrose Centre – A national charity for breast cancer patients. The Rame Group Practice – To acquire a heart monitor for Torpoint’s medical practice. St Giles Hospice, Whittington, Staffs – Offering care and support for the terminally ill. If you would like to make a donation make a cheque out to the ‘Gaffer’s Gallop Re Run’ and send to Brett Baxter, 35 Thanckes Drive, Torpoint, Cornwall PL11 2JN, or phone: 01752 815443, 07798 853502, email bbaxter2011@hotmail.co.uk Route and timing details are available from Jacqui Watson at 01888 544710, email gorgeousbikerchick@aultan.com Find the Gaffers Gallop on Facebook

BMF Show organiser The Mulberry Group has announced that this year’s Tailend Show will have some extra features and some very special guests over the weekend. “We have supported an epic 4000 mile coastline ride for autism throughout the year,” said Mulberry’s MD Martin Chick, “and the culmination of this fantastic feat, undertaken by Paul Newman, will be a ride into the show on Sunday morning and Paul will be accompanied by our very special guest and NAS supporter, 1970s pop legend – Alvin Stardust. He will be our headline act on Saturday evening on the main stage and will then ride in with Paul on Sunday morning and spend some time on the NAS stand.” The BMF Tailend Show offers a fully packed weekend of entertainment, awesome stunt riding and what

Alvin Stardust joins the ride in on the Sunday’s BMF

promises to be a great end of season party! If you are free over the weekend of September 13-15, ride over to Peterborough… it may well be worth it!

Clubs... we could make life easier! One of the biggest hassles in a club life is production of the regular magazine, calendar, flyer or any of the hundreds of other printing needs a club needs. We at OBM know this because we’re involved in the club scene too and the OBM parent group Mortons knows more than a thing or two about printing… with around a million newspapers a week printed here. OBM is actually printed in-house and watching it whizz round the presses is fascinating. However, it’s not the only printing we can do and club mags, brochures, flyers and calendars are all turned out on our digital presses. Rapid and reasonably costed too, so there’s a potential saving for club resources.

Not only can we print it but we can send it out for you too thanks to our combined printing and mailing services here at OBM HQ. Whether it’s a leaflet advertising an event you have planned, a calendar, a newsletter or a glossy brochure, our digital press and experienced staff can take on jobs of all kinds, big or small, and help you to both produce and deliver your printed communications. To find out what our enthusiastic and friendly staff can do for you, call contract print client manager Lorraine Noble-Thompson at lnoble-thompson@ mortons.co.uk call her direct line on 01507 529256 or call her mobile on 07748 965894.

Take your ISDT bike to Stafford October Stafford – or as it’s actually called the Carole Nash Classics Mechanics Show at Stafford County Showground – is just around the corner. Part of the OBM editor’s duties include gathering bikes for the Dirt Bike Hall and this year we’re looking for all sorts of ISDT/E bikes to come along. Why? Well, it’s ISDT centenary year, surely a momentous occasion for all concerned. We’re also looking for a selection of TY Yamaha trials models – standard or trick it doesn’t matter. Contact us here at the OBM office if you can help.

Our latest online video is dramatic footage of the first event at Oulton Park in August, 1953. Spectators were banned from attending for some bizarre reason, the rules being relaxed for subsequent meetings, as the second one in October testified with an attendance of 40,000. To view the video click on the ‘Multimedia’ tab on the website’s top navigation. On the competition front, we have a stunning new £3500 Teng Tool tower toolbox and, partnering our personally signed Agostini print competition. Also, for the techies, there’s a mystery bike competition running in the forum. Most recent wallpaper downloads include Howard Davies at the 1925 Junior TT, a frenetic race start at Aberdare Park, South Wales, an easter meeting at Donington in 1933 and a Royal Enfield Super 5 being attended to at a pitstop in the Thruxton 500 endurance race in 1963. Go on, give your PC a makeover! To view all the free wallpaper downloads, go to the ‘Wallpaper’ link from the top navigation, or search for it from the search field. Latest online articles include choosing a BSA unit twin, buying a race replica and we chart the rise and fall of the V-twin Indian Chief. Visit www.classicbikersclub.com for the latest classic news, events and articles.

OBM’s plan of action It’s that time again for the OBM wall planner. The crucial date to remember is Thursday, October 10. There are no excuses for missing this date, no chance of ‘squeezing it in’ after this date as it will be too late. So, get organised and get on the planner. If you would like your event planned on this stunning wall planner then contact Heidi Lamb or Julie Wood by fax on 01507 528988 or email obmfreeads @mortons.co.uk Make sure everything is correct... as once the 10th is past then you’ve had it! Join the Mike Ellis Memorial Run and help raise funds for life-saving medical equipment.

Bill Nilsson Just as we were going to press we learned Swedish MX legend and twice world MX champion Bill Nilsson died on August 25 aged 80. Bill was the very first MX world champion in 1957. He achieved this distinction in his own way by converting an AJS 7R road racer to offroad trim and dominating. His rise began when he was selected to represent Sweden as part of the MXdNations team in 1954. The individual winner of the event, his efforts also placed the Swedish team second. Nilsson was deemed a hard rider but his contemporaries trusted him. Latterly he became involved in restoring classics and his work provided Scandinavian enthusiasts with many a stunning machine.

Thundersprint action moves to the Darley Moor circuit for 2014... the top-class action remains the same.

Thundersprint heads to Darley Moor After the success of this year’s Thundersprint at the Anglesey circuit, the event moves to the heart of England for 2014’s event on May 10-11. Organiser Frank Melling said: “We had a great time in Anglesey and enjoyed a truly warm welcome from the Anglesey Circuit and the people of North Wales. “However, a lot of Thundersprint fans live in central England and they were pressing us for a location nearer to them. When we were approached by the Darley Moor Motorcycle Road Racing Club to relocate to its

fabulous circuit, set in the heart of the beautiful Derbyshire Dales and yet only 20 miles from the M1 motorway, we didn’t require much persuading! “The Darley Moor Motor Sport Centre circuit is the best kept secret in motorcycle racing. It’s a great racing track, in stunning parkland grounds, and with a history going back over half a century. In short, it is the perfect venue for the Thundersprint.” For more information contact Frank Melling on 01928 740498 or email info@thundersprint.com

irst to pick up the challenge were Anne Marie Steward and Carl Ward on a couple of BSA’s finest. This is Anne Marie’s account… Being a county devoid of motorways, Norfolk offers many other road styles; lots of them bumpy… and some with grass growing down the middle. Just such a one seemed a perfect match for our M series’ unhurried, slow-revving pace as we made our way out of the quiet village of East Ruston on the first leg of a 20 mile run to Cromer. A string of coastal villages lined our route, and we slowed to salute the bike-friendly Kingfisher Cafe at Walcott, thundering alongside the concrete sea wall before peeling off on to the coast road proper.

21

if this doesn’t tempt you to do your bit of the coast then what will?

What we need…

Okay, here’s the brief… pick your favourite bit of coast, take a ride, point out the sights, places to have a bite and what bikes you were on. Oh… then cram it all into 500 words or so, send us a few high quality pics (around 1MB minimum) … and let’s see if we can join the coast up around these islands.

A mile or so ahead this road transformed into a broad, slick, black-topped highway edged with high, tightly-cropped grassy banks. Rising up behind no-nonsense razorwire looms the gas terminal at Bacton, but this glimpse of the 21st century soon passed and the road curled through Paston – where we pulled in to admire the restored 16th century Great Barn, now an important maternity roost site for endangered bat species… as well as being a nice place to stop. Just as we’d built up speed the hamlet of Stow announced itself with a stonking black and white windmill positioned in such a way that the road veered skittishly to avoid it. We did the same and rode on through the plastic windmills and buckets and spades of Mundesley High Street and past the defused Second World War bomb – a memorial to a local bomb disposal squadron. Being on a cliff top, and being somewhat devil-may-care, we took an off-road detour down a steep, sandy track… slipping and twisting between gorse and furze bushes towards the beach. The track was rather over populated with Land Rovers and outcrops of lethally sharp flint… but the views were worth the whiteknuckle ride.

slickly run programme of 41 races over the weekend of July 27-28 at the challenging ‘mini-circuit’ of Lydden Hill gave some close and exciting contests – and some disappointments. Mike Powell slid off at Paddock while leading the Bantam Class in race one. Rob Walker had a primary drive belt failure as he challenged for the lead in race five and Mervyn Stratford experienced a magneto failure while challenging Tim Jackson for the lead in race 11. None of this disheartened or discouraged them. Mike Powell went on to claim victory in the Bantam Races and was in the thick of it with his G50 in the 500cc Class races. Rob Walker went on to claim four wins and a second place on the immaculate ‘Yellow Velos’ and the inimitable Mervyn Stratford continued his winning ways in the 250cc and 350cc classes on his extraordinary Rudges. Lydden Hill is a challenge to the threewheeled brigade, powerful brakes and nerves of steel are helpful. Ample supplies of both were evident as the Quirks and their Vincent battled it out with the Morgan of Bill and Maggie Tuer. There was added interest in the Honda ‘Four’ outfit of invited riders Reeves and Hill. The vivid acceleration and the gorgeous exhaust note of this projectile were not quite enough to

hold the Morgan and the Vincent at bay in every race. Two scooter sidecar outfits joined the fray and the combination of John Howe and Sophie Timlin exceeded many people’s expectations in finishing sixth overall in race 37. We were able to accommodate three riders from ‘la belle France’ for the weekend. They had not come solely for the fish and chips – but to win races – and Didier Deletoile and his Ducati TT did just that in the BEARS race 42. This after giving us a demonstration of his skill and determination in Races 10, 21 and 32 where he made strong challenges for second place from Austen Kear who had harried Ben Kingham’s BMW all weekend. Scooter racing on a one-mile circuit with a steep hill and some long, sweeping bends is recipe for exciting action – and we were not disappointed. The usual suspects were at the front from the drop of the flag to engage in race-long dices to the finish, but the life-or-death tussle’s midfield between Steve Wright and Mark Clipstone in race 29 and Alexander van Dyke, Steve Wright (again!) and Mike Hardy in Race 39 really added to the spectacle. Stacey Killworth and his ‘Triton’ experienced mixed fortunes over the weekend. There was a win in the closely

fought race seven for ‘The Big Stuff’ and another in the first BEARS race followed by retirement from Race 18 and a fall in Race 30 at Paddock. He was leading in race 40 until it was ‘red-flagged’ and retired on lap five of Race 42 while in the lead. The up to 350cc races gave that man Stratford another opportunity to strut his stuff – and he did not disappoint. After his magneto failure in Race 11 he took fourth place overall in Race 22 behind John Warwick on his very quick ‘Gold Star, Graham Buller on his Norton and similarly mounted Nick Bedford. In Sunday’s races, it was Tim Jackson’s turn at the flag in both races with John Warwick and Graham Buller behind him in the first race and Mervyn Stratford fourth in Race 33 and third in Race 43 behind Graham Buller. The Lacey Ducati races could be described as a grand day out for Scott Harris and his 350cc Ducati Mk.3 with a win in race one from Andy Hunt. Positions at the flag were reversed in race 12 after an exciting duel right from the off. This continued on the Sunday with another tight, exciting race where Harris fought off the challenge from Andy Hunt and Nick Kennett. In the final race of the day for the Ducatis, Scott made no mistakes and soon built up a convincing lead over Andy, Nick and Stu Noble. We are now more than halfway through the season and the various championships are becoming defined. Mallory Park at the end of August – too late for a report – and then we round off the year with two days of racing at everyone’s favourite circuit, Cadwell Park, at the end of September.

A ride through the New Forest Sammy Miller Run 2013

T

he 16th Annual Sammy Miller Run took place on Sunday, August 25. Although a sprinkling of rain in the morning dampened the roads, riders enjoyed a dry trip through the New Forest and sunshine welcomed them back to the Sammy Miller Museum after lunch and into the afternoon. Motorbikes had travelled from all over the country to attend and the range of machines entered was extremely impressive, with examples from every decade from the early 1920s right through to 1980. This year also saw the number of lady riders increase by 25%. Riders were waved off by Percy Gosling, clerk of the course. They enjoyed the run of 56 miles through the New Forest, stopping for lunch at The Drift Inn at Beaulieu where they were given a warm welcome. Bob Stanley, who works with Sammy in the restoration workshop, followed in the recovery van and unfortunately had to help some riders. One fell off his bike into a hedge – many riders rallied to his aid but he was not badly hurt.

It’s looking a bit damp there, not that it seems to bother the good mix of German, Japanese and British machinery in this group.

AWARDS Entrants are flagged away from the museum car park by Percy Gosling.

After the lunch stop, the riders returned to the museum complex where they were awarded their finishing brasses and awards. Awards were presented by Sammy’s wife Rosemary. Sammy was away riding at the Isle of Man Classic TT Races where he was given an amazing welcome by the crowd. Even if you don’t participate in the run there are always lots of interesting bikes to view – and it’s great to hear these machines starting up and riding off!

A trio of classic Japanese machines await the off.

The Sammy Miller Museum complex at New Milton, Hants is open every day. Ticket price includes admission to tearooms, shops, animals and car park. More info at: sammymiller.co.uk
