THEfirstoftwoplanned Class50books by theco-founder of theFifty Fund, Dave Keogh, waspublishedlastyear, titledFiftyMemories. Afterbuyinga copy Ieagerlyreadit from coverto coverand, whileit wasessentiallya photographicbook, thecaptionswere farmorethansimplephotocaptions, beingusedtotell awiderstoryina highlyentertainingtone. It’sabookI’ve found myself returningto severaltimes since.
Well, the secondbookhasnow beenpublishedand Class50s– From HeydaystoMaydays hascertainly beenworththe wait,andissub-titled ‘A basher’saccountof howafleetof modernlocos were sidelined by British Rail asitprepared forPrivatisation’.And hehas apoint, formanyofthe Class 50sbarelymanagedtwodecadesof
operationbefore beingwithdrawn.
Thisbookfeaturestheauthor’s extensiveClass50 photographic collection, andanyconcernsthathe wouldhave usedallthe bestimagesin the firstvolume arequickly dispelled when youstart poring overthepages, asthisbookisjustasgood –ifnot better –thanthefirstone.
Withtheauthorbeing ahighly accomplishedphotographer, the book is lavishlyillustrated overits208 pages and14chapterswith awide rangeof excellentimages depictingthe Class 50sinaction,as wellasdepotshots andsomephotographs of the sidelined locomotives awaitingtheir fate.
It’s not asecretthatIhaverathera softspot fortheClass50s,soIrealise thatIamessentiallythetargetaudience andwas therefore likely to enjoy it,but
itisthestyle of theauthor'swritingand hisentertaining and informativetext thatprovides plentyof interest above andbeyond thephotography, evenif you only have amoderatepassing interestin the Class 50s.
Certainly no‘difficultsecond album’situationwiththis softback A4 portrait-formatbook, whichis published by theFifty Fund andpriced at avery reasonable £29.95, with all profits generated fromsales going towardsthe ongoing preservation of thelocomotives managedbythe Fifty Fund andClass50Alliance.Whilethere is certainly no shortageofbooks for the Class 50enthusiast, this book is anothermust-buypublicationto be added to yourcollection andIhaveno hesitationin recommendingittobe addedto your bookshelves.
