A MOMENT OF REFLECTION: While most of the country is in lockdown, work continues on the railway – not just vital deliveries, but planned engineering work too. This is a view from the cab of Freightliner’s No. 66568 across the Firth of Forth to Edinburgh from Burntisland on April 4, after arriving with the 6K15 rail delivery working from Millerhill. Headlines from the past 50 years.
This month we show how to remodel Hornby’s Class 60 as No. 60012 Glyder Fawr as well as using Bachmann’s VDAs and OTAs to create a ‘Sea Urchin’ ballast wagon. Reviews are thin on the ground during lockdown, but we take a look at Farish’s modified ‘70’ as well as scenic products from Goodwood and Flake King.
Our railways do their bit – empty stations, train namings, NHS messages of support, blue light shows, and food giveaways; Government supports heavy and light rail; HS2 work gets official go-ahead; DfT refreshes Community Rail Network; Southeastern to take Class 707s; Class 442 car scrapped; ‘Badger’ heads for repaint; Bletchley flyover ‘deconstructed’.

The remarkable fundraising achievement of 100-year-old Captain Tom Moore has been marked by two railway namings, one being GBRf’s No. 66731 at Eastleigh on April 30, following a suggestion by Neil Booth of Railwayana Auctions, who is now offering a limited edition of third-scale replica nameplates to raise money for the NHS – see www.ukrailwayana.com. FROM THE ARCHIVE 1: ‘Peak’ No. D107 (later 45120) heads south through Wood End, Warwickshire, with an inter-regional train to the Western Region on June 10, 1973. Wood End is on the Birmingham to Stratford-upon-Avon line, which until 1976 continued on through Broadway and the present day Gloucestershire-Warwickshire Railway to Cheltenham and the South West.
2: Built in 1960 as six-car sets, but here reduced to five-cars, the stylish Class 124s were powerful DMUs for tackling the demanding trans-Pennine routes from Liverpool/Manchester to Leeds/York/Hull and others. This set calls at Stalybridge on June 27, 1975 with the 09.10 Liverpool Lime Street-Hull. The station then still had its soot-covered canopies, but has a general run-down air that has been much improved through upgrades in the 1990s and 2000s.
3: The 17.00 King’s Cross to Edinburgh on June 23, 1975 is still loading, but ‘Domino’ headcodefitted ‘Deltic’ No. 55004 Queen’s Own Highlander is champing at the bit to get going and leave the rainy London terminal behind.
6
4: ‘Western’ No. D1022 Western Sentinel, already showing signs of a lack of care as the class heads towards its final days, speeds west of Hayes & Harlington in the London suburbs with a West Country express from Paddington in June 1976. This is near the site of the present day Airport Junction and the branch to Heathrow.
5: Electrification at Doncaster was still a decade away as ‘Whistlers’ Nos. 40040+40006 head north through the station, the lead loco carrying a nasty scrape along its upper bodyside. The background is dominated by the former Wagon Works, which is now home to Wabtec Rail.
7
6: Passenger services on the Weardale Line from Bishop Auckland were withdrawn in 1953, but the line remained open as far as Eastgate until 1980 for freight traffic, allowing this tour from Newcastle and Darlington to visit on June 24, 1978 formed of a mixed four-car set of Class 101 and 105 vehicles. The line remains today as the heritage Weardale Railway, although Eastgate is currently beyond the limits of operation.
7: Spot the difference? Two of English Electric’s finest Nos. 40060 (left) and 37141 line up at Holgate Sidings, just south of York, on June 4, 1982 with their respective freight trains as an unidentified ‘Peak’ approaches with a passenger working on the main line in the background.
