This song originally had nothing in particular to do with Vespas. It has everything to do with this Douglasproduced Rod model, though, as its first owner christened it as such and it’s certainly a stylish carriage.

ne of the first hundred to be produced under licence by British motorcycle manufacturers Douglas, it wasn’t the first choice of machine for its original owner. Having ridden motorcycles in the 1930s and while serving in the British Army during the Second World War, Mr E W Dixon went to his local Nottingham dealership to buy a motorbike to commute to his newly acquired pharmacy in the summer of 1951. On his arrival, the sales assistant informed him that in an effort to rebuild the country’s economy, virtually every new machine was destined for export and there was a minimum two-year waiting list when any became available for home market consumption. He was told that Breffits, a nearby dealership, had a pair of what Mr Dixon believed was Velocets for sale but he was most surprised to find a pair of metallic green Vespas. He’d never heard of them before but, although not what he had expected, they had the advantage of being available for immediate sale and Mr Dixon was won over by the diminutive machine! With no other incentive needed than being available, one of the pair was registered, taxed and insured and made ready for the road. Stepping aboard his new Vespa, Mr Dixon had his first taste of Douglas product testing when the machine spluttered to a halt a few hundred yards down the road. With his

I’m sure that’s how many of us remember Batman from the 1960s. Maybe it did have an amateurish feel about it but the characters themselves gained an almost iconic status. An influence strong enough to carry them over until the 1980s relaunch and the ever-continuing film franchise. Of all Batman’s arch enemies, the one that stands out by far the most is The Joker. With his pale white face and vivid bright red lips, he’s an instantly recognisable character.

A resurgence in the fatherland

There seems something of a resurgence in the scooter scene in Germany currently. Not just the rallies but also a growing and ever-popular custom aspect. Though it’s sprinkled with Lambrettas the real driving force is the Vespa. It’s always been the more popular choice, primarily due to the strict regulation on vehicles requiring such items as working indicators. Though all Vespas seem popular it’s the PX that is by far the number one choice. Hardly surprising as there are plenty to go around and have always been the best option when
