Army officials would not confirm the contents of the presentation, but three officials present at the meeting separately provided The Hindu with the same account of what was said. The presentation also included a slide, which asserted that while the State people were seeking bijli, sadak, paani (electricity, roads, water), calls for lifting the AFSPA were coming from four categories: Pakistan, the InterServices Intelligence Director-

ate, terrorists and secessionists. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who chairs the Unified Headquarters, interjected to ask Lt. Gen. Hasnain to leave a copy of the slide behind, so he could “see where I fit in.” The presentation made no mention of the fact that the demand for lifting the AFSPA has been supported by Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram and forms part of the recommendations of the recently submitted report of three interlocutors Lt.-Gen. Hasnain claimed that lifting the AFSPA would

The Jammu and Kashmir government has called for a phased rollback of AFSPA on a test basis, pointing to the dramatically-improved law and order situation in the state. NSCN Khaplang to re-establish camps, sub-office in Dimapur Our Correspondent

Kohima | November 11

The NSCN (Khaplang) is all set to re-establish camps and a sub-office in Dimapur. According to a highly-placed NSCN (K) source, the organization has identified several locations within Dimapur jurisdiction for setting up a sub-office. Of these, it has found Padampukhuri (Naharbari) and Seithekiema (Patkai Christian College) the most viable, the source said. The group has, however, expressed reservation that the Khehoi Campbased GPRN/NSCN is stiffly opposed to its presence in Dimapur area. Claiming that the opposition is mainly due to Khe-

hoi camp’s apprehension that its “extortion activities” within Dimapur area would be affected, source said the NSCN-K is determined and prepared to set up its sub-office and even camps within Dimapur area. Also, reiterating that Khehoi camp belongs to the NSCN led by Khaplang, the source said the NSCN is restraining itself from forcefully re-occupying the camp merely because it does not wish to vitiate the prevailing peaceful atmosphere. “We are in a position to evict the Khehoi campers and reclaim the camp that is rightfully ours had we really wanted to. However, this will result in bloodshed and we do not want that at a time when

peace is prevailing. Therefore, for this reason alone, we have chosen to restrain ourselves for the time being”, the source added. Meanwhile, the sources also informed that the recent Cease Fire Supervisory Board (CFSB) meeting held in Dimapur was a routine affair where the members discussed on ways and means to ensure more effective implementation of the ceasefire ground rules laid down following the peace pact between the NSCN and the Government of India. It may be recalled here that the NSCN, formerly led by Khaplang, split into two groups on June 7 earlier this year – one led by Kitovi Zhimomi and the other by S.S Khaplang.

NSCN/GPRN questions Zeliangrong Baudi High land rate derails Dimapur Rail-link meet Dimapur, November 11 (mexN): The NSCN has stated that “the so called Zeliangrong Baudi organisation” has been posing themselves as if it is the people mandated organisation, but the Zeliangrong people in general had not sanctioned due recognition to the said organisation. NSCN also said that press notes issued to the media by the said organisation have been always condemning the NSCNIM without the real ground facts and unfound provocation against the NSCN

(IM). This was stated in a press note issued by Central Administrative Officer, Zeilad Zeliangrong region NSCN/GPRN. The note also said that ZUF was formed to challenge the Nation particularly the Zeliangrong People. It was further stated that the slogan quote “Zeliangrong Ringtelou, meaning Long Live the Zeliangrong People, its objective was to defend the land and resources of the Zeliangrong People” this slogan is being used as the camouflage of the ZUF which is a mockery

to the Zeliangrong People. NSCN further alleged that the Zeliangrong Baudi slammed the NSCN cadres who were on protection of Zeliangrong People and also the Naga as a whole. “It is the duty of the Naga Army to check anti-national elements, caused by the ZUF in which certain section of the people, particularly Subung villagers who have been cooperating and feeding the ZUF. Therefore, the Army Cadres of the NSCN who were on duty had taught them (villagers) a lesson not to continue their

support to the ZUF,” It said and added that the allegation, condemning the cadres of the NSCN by the Zeliangrong Baudi without knowing the reason is totally unfound. The Zeilad Zeliangrong region in the note stated that it strongly opposes the Zeliangrong Baudi, and warns them not to repeat the provocative publications in future. “It is also to be noted that Zeliangrong Baudi should be aware of their involvement with the ZUF behind the screen,” further stated the note.

Dimapur, November 11 (mexN): A meeting on November 7 between government officials and landowners in Dimapur concerning the proposed Dimapur-to-Kohima railway-link ended in a deadlock after the sides failed to reach an agreement over land compensation rates. The landowners have demanded Rs. 60 per square feet while the government suggested Rs.25 for a square. The latter rate was rejected by the landowners, the Dimapur administration informed today. In attendance in the meeting among others were MLA Azheto Zhimomi and

Chief Secretary of Nagaland Lalthara and landowners, GBs and leaders of the villages under whose land the railway-link falls. A copy of the minutes of the meeting issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur N Husheli Sema was received here today. Zhimomi suggested to the landowners a rate of Rs. 25 per square feet for residential areas, Rs. 10 per square feet for paddy fields and a separate rate for damaged properties. He also appealed to the GBs and leaders of the landowners to at least make some sacrifice for the sake of development as the railway project is a

boon to the state. Chief Secretary Lalthara also appealed to the landowners to come to an understanding with the government over the rate of acquisition for development of the railway line, which is for Nagaland and her people. The leader of the railway land owners association “expressed his inability to convince the railway ministry for enhancement of rate of land compensation hence the rate of compensation set by the government at Rs. 60 per square feet in the plain area of Dimapur is final.” Continued on page 5

3 Nagaland buses illegally Nagaland CM new official residence inaugurated registered at Mapusa RTO mapusa, November 11 (TNN): Mapusa police on Thursday registered a case against an unknown person for illegally transferring the ownership of three buses from Nagaland and registering them at the RTO office at Mapusa by forging the signature thereby cheating the authorities. The Mapusa RTO office had recently detained three buses for not possessing valid documents. The buses were lying at the RTO office but nobody came to claim them. Suspecting something was amiss, the RTO later

inquired into the ownership of the vehicles, which revealed that the three buses from Nagaland were transferred, renowned and re-registered by a Siolim resident Sudesh Chandrakant Shirodkar. Shirodkar claimed before authorities that the buses did not belong to him. He claimed that some unknown person must have used his name and signature to re-register the buses. Assistant director of transport of Mapusa, Ivo Rodrigues, complained that on June 29 some unknown

person forged Shirodkar’s signature on the transfer and registration documents in order to transfer the ownership and register the vehicles. He then submitted the same as genuine before the competent authority and succeeded in transferring the ownership of the three buses and getting new registration. The police have registered the case under Section 468, Governor Nikhil Kumar formally inaugurating the Official Residence of Chief MInister of Nagaland at the Old Ministers’ Section 471, Section 420 of Hill Kohima on November 11. economic blockade in Manipur still continuing, BJP today demanded dismissal of the Congress-led Ibobi Singh government and said an all-party delegation be sent to the state to talk to the locals and suggest measures to deal with the issues. A BJP delegation comprising party MPs Yashwant Sinha and Prakash Javadekar had visited Manipur earlier this week to get first-hand information about the difficulties being faced by the people due to the economic blockade which has lasted over a 100 days. "There is a failed government in Manipur which is not doing anything to ameliorate the sufferings of the people there. The

here, are that prices of essential commodities have sky-rocketed," Sinha told reporters here. He alleged that the Ibobi Singh government supports 30 "underground forces" there. "The Ibobi Singh government should be immediately dismissed and President's Rule should be imposed in the state. The Government of India should take immediate control. The Centre should act decisively," Sinha said. A BJP delegation led by Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, her Rajya Sabha counterpart Arun Jaitley and party president Nitin Gadkari had met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh sometime back and demanded action.

Election for Nagaland. Another point raised by DC Longleng was that in this same locality, the IPPI program was also covered by Assam without the knowledge of the Longleng district administration. DC Sivasagar replied that since the matter is in the court, status quo should be maintained till a decision is taken by the court. Regarding IPPI, he suggested to communicate officially since the matter was never brought to the notice earlier.

DC Sivasagar and DC Mokokchung expressed happiness in the regular Border Magistrates level meetings between Sivasagar and Mokokchung districts. DC Sivasagar requested Border Magistrate Sector ‘F’ Sivasagar to present his views on the border meetings. Border Magistrate Sector ‘F’ Sivasagar, Richand Ahmed informed the house that border meetings are regularly been held with the district of Mokokchung and the results of the meetings have been very fruitful. He requested DC Mon and DC Longleng to initiate such Border Magistrate level meeting at regular intervals as such meetings would bring more cordial relationship and a sense of brotherhood and tranquility between the neighbouring districts of Assam and Nagaland. The DC Mon suggested having next DCs level meeting in Mon district headquarter. The meeting ended with vote of thanks pronounced by Syed I. Rahman, ADC(Border) Sivasagr. The delegation was felicitated in the evening at Officers Club Sivasagar where Syed Iftikar Hussain IAS, Commissioner, Upper Assam Division, Jorhat also attended the program.

guWaHaTi, November 11 (TNN): As Manipur remains crippled by an economic blockade that has completed 100 days, a bridge funded by the North Eastern Council (NEC) is being constructed on the Barak River in Cachar district to act as the state's new lifeline to its western border. The new route is expected to be operational by the third week of this month. Manipur is facing one of the worst food and fuel crisis since August 1 when Kukis called a highway blockade seeking creation of Sadar Hills district by carving out a portion of Nagamajority Senapati district. A counter-blockade was imposed by United Naga Council on the DimapurImphal road through Nagaland and on the longer Silchar-Imphal route through Assam since August 21 to oppose any move to bifurcate Naga areas. The Kukis called off the blockade on November 1 after the3 Manipur government agreed to look into their demand and also granted three new sub-divisions. The UNC continues the blockade against Manipur government's assurance to Kukis without consulting them. The authorities concerned

The organizations denounced said the recurring clashed between the groups in Khoupum areas. “We take this opportunity to strongly condemn the most appalling act of brutal assaults of the village authority members of Soubunglong, villagers of Gatao, Thanagong and Taulingpung villages in Khoupum in Tamenglong district. “We demand the NSCN-IM leadership immediately punish the perpetrators of such inhuman acts with befitting examples so that such shameful acts of random physical assaults on innocent civilians do not happen again in any part of the Zeliangrong areas and the Naga country as a whole,” the ZSUD and the ZWAD stated in a joint press release today.

“We demand that the NSCN-IM adequately compensate all the medical expenses of the elderly victims undergoing medical treatment who could be crippled for life as per Naga customary laws for the physical hurt and mental trauma caused.” The organizations then demand that the two underground groups withdraw to their respective camps and leave the public alone. “What is the need for the NSCN-IM cadres to forcibly occupy the empty houses and build bunkers in Thanagong and Duithanjang villages? Why do they have to displace villagers during the most busy harvest time of the year? Do they want to create artificial famine in Zeliangrong regions as happened in the 1960s?”

the organizations queried. All peace-loving people and civil organizations of the Zeliangrong people are urged to take prompt initiative to restore peace and end the ongoing conflict between the NSCN-IM and the ZUF in the larger interest of the people. “If any of the organizations involved in the conflicts do not heed tour appeal for peace and harmony and to immediately cease the ongoing hostility and violence in Zeliangrong region/country, we will be compelled to conclude that they are anti-people, anti-Zeliangrong and anti-Naga,” the press release said. The press release was jointly appended by leaders of both the organizations.

The deputy commissioner said the existing bridge at Soroghat has a single-lane. "It has become weak and we are having the viaduct repaired to keep supplies to Manipur on. Since this bridge cannot take more than 18 tons, we are allowing just one vehicle to pass at a time. Right now, we are only allowing food and fuel supplies to Manipur." There is already a road in place with World Bank funds from Silchar to the new bridge. Once the new route becomes operational, trucks carrying essential commodities and fuel from Guwahati will travel through Shillong to take the new bridge through Silchar instead of the troubled highway through Golaghat district in Assam and Dimapur to reach Manipur. Cachar DC said the district administration has submitted a proposal for a new bridge at an estimated cost of Rs 60 crore at Soroghat and the survey work for this is expected to be over by December. The bridge is expected to be complete in three years.

A new bridge with NEC funds at a distance from this bridge is on the verge of completion." State home secretary GD Tripathi said, "The Silchar-Manipur road had become defunct because of the dilapidated condition of a bridge, but now were taking all possible measures to continue supply of at least essential commodities to Manipur." Kingfisher Airlines seeks govt help, flight cancellations continue

NeW Delhi, November 11 (pTi): Facing serious financial turbulence, Kingfisher Airlines has sought government help for a bailout even as it continued its flight curtailment spree for the fifth consecutive day on Friday and its stocks plummeted by over 19 per cent to an all-time low but recovered slightly later. The seriousness of the crisis was underlined by the urgent request Kingfisher owner Vijay Mallya made to Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Civil Aviation Minister Vayalar Ravi to help Kingfisher in infusion of funds through banks at low interest rates, besides other concessions in line with what Air India was getting, sources said. However, there was no official word immediately on whether any step was being taken on Mallya’s request made earlier this week. Some 50 pilots and cabin crew did not turn up for duty by reporting sick as over 40 flights were

cancelled across its network today. Innumerable passengers across the country cancelled Kingfisher flight tickets to travel by other airlines, though after paying 20-40 per cent higher at the last moment. The airline, which had earlier said it would restore its flights after October 19, has now indicated that it would take a few more weeks to normalise the flight schedule, that would go into the peak winter season air traffic. Apart from taking aircraft off flights to reconfigure and install business class seats in them, airline CEO Sanjay Agarwal told PTI, “We decided to reduce frequency in some of the routes where we had multiple flights like Delhi-Mumbai or low passenger load like Nanded-Mysore.” This exercise was part of route rationalisation to improve profitability and revenue productivity of the flights, he said. Asked whether they had responded to the show-cause

notice issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Agarwal said, “We are in close touch with them. We are explaining to them that these cancellations are temporary in nature. We are keeping them informed.” DGCA has issued the notice under Rule 140(A) of the Aircraft Rules, 1937, asking Kingfisher why it had not taken the regulator’s prior approval to curtail its flight schedules as required by this rule. It has also sought to know whether the airline had taken any step to facilitate the passengers inconvenienced by the cancellations. Meanwhile, all the oil PSUs, HPCL, IOC and BPCL, have denied extending credit line to the liquor baron Mallya-owned airline and asked it to pay for lifting jet fuel on a daily basis. The airline has suffered a loss of Rs 1,027 crore in 2010-11 and has a mounting debt of Rs 7057.08 crore. To questions on alleged exodus of

pilots and cabin crew from the airline, Agarwal, “There is a process of natural attrition. Pilots and other staff come and go. If you put the number of pilots who have left in over 7-8 months, it could be 100. “This has not happened all of a sudden as is being projected. Not a single Kingfisher flight has been cancelled due to shortage of crew as is being reported. We have over 650 pilots on our rolls now,” the airline CEO maintained. Industry sources said the lessors of Kingfisher’s leased turboprop ATR aircraft fleet have put the airline on notice and want urgent payments for the lease. The cash-strapped carrier also has unpaid dues to the operators of airports and other agencies, which have also been putting pressure on it to expedite payment. Meanwhile, Kingfisher’s shares slumped by over 19 per cent to an all-time low on the bourses, before recovering some ground.

HIV/AIDS sensitization prog at Longsa successful

Dimapur, November 11 (mexN): The results of launching of the Bharti Infratel Ltd. sponsored HIV/AIDS sensitization programme at Longsa Village on November 28, 2010, has been very positive. Mokokchung NMP+ President Toshi Sangpi in press release said that the sensitization programmes have shown tremendous success for clarification of HIV/AIDS myths and misconceptions especially during the question/discussion hour sessions as well as huge participant turnout at the sensitization camps. This is reflected in the way people now come

out in large numbers to avail HIV blood testing services. A bright aspect of the HIV/AIDS sensitization programmes is the disclosure by participants that they were earlier complacent with ignorance of their HIV status as their fear and apprehension of HIV/AIDS prevented them from availing HIV blood tests, the release stated. However, since their doubts, myths and misconceptions about HIV and AIDS have been dispelled through the sensitization programmes, the participants revealed their conviction and expressed eagerness to go for HIV

blood screening at the earliest. The vision behind the HIV/ AIDS sensitization campaign is the prevention of further HIV infections as well as eradication of stigma and discrimination to effect an enabling environment for people living with HIV. This campaign will continue till all the villages of Mokokchung District have been covered. Recently, NMP+ successfully conducted on October 27, 28 and 29 HIV/AIDS sensitization programmes at Moayimti, Merangkong Compound and Chungtiayimsen villages of Mokokchung District on October 16, 23 and 30 respectively.

campaign will be held in Selsella, about 400 km from Shillong, before being held in other parts of the state wherein interested fish farmers will be enrolled so that they can avail the schemes meant for promoting aquaculture. Sangma said the mission envisages investment in the fishery sector and addresses the problems of poverty, unemployment and underemployment in the hill state. Traditionally, fish rearing has been virtually non-existent, but in the recent years, people have started undertaking fish farming as an alternative means of livelihood. “The sector requires serious investments for it to make any significant impact on the livelihoods,” said K.N. Kumar, commissioner and secretary of fisheries. “Fisheries is taken up in Meghalaya mostly as a secondary activity and the time has come for us to bring the sector to centre stage,” Kumar said.

etting oneself FIT is something we are being progressively aware of in this fast world. For most people the hardest part of exercising is just getting started. Hectic schedules and lack of time certainly contribute to the excuses. But for many people, lack of basic workout knowledge intimidates them and prevents them from even getting started. It’s easy to understand why some feel overwhelmed about beginning a new fitness routine. Virtually every day the media is bombarding the public with the latest “diet research” often times contradicting what may have been reported just weeks earlier. And infomercials swear that 20 minutes of this or 15 minutes of that is all that is required to look like a Hollywood star. With so much information (and misinformation), it can be hard to decipher what fitness regimen will really deliver results. But truthfully, it’s not difficult at all to determine what workout will provide health benefits. Contrary to popular beliefs, “eating right” is not synonymous with “deprivation and suffering.” Likewise “staying active” does not entail long hours devoted to a human hamster wheel. In this article, we are going to delve lighter into basic fitness necessary to pursue a healthy lifestyle. Take a deep breath. This is not going to be as hard as you think. When you look at fitness, you need to remember that it is more then just exercising. It is overall a com-

bination of Weight Control, Strength, Endurance, Fat & Calorie Content. SPOT TRAINING is a myth, I dare say. Your body determines which fat stores it will use. There is no such thing as, “I want to reduce on my arms but not on my hips!” For example, Sit-ups may strengthen your abs but will not take the fat off your stomach. Working as a Personal Trainer, I discovered two different species of client. The first group surrendered completely to me through every aspect of diet and exercise. They put their trust in my expertise, rarely questioned anything, and proceeded through training with moderate success. In contrast the second group questioned my methods, sometimes quoting books and articles that contradicted me. This group made real progress. And I learned something as well: People are more likely to follow a prescribed eating plan or exercise program if they have a basic understanding of how and why the routine works to help them meet their particular training goals. To achieve your fitness goals you need to balance all its components of Strength, Endurance (cardio) & Flexibility. I cannot stress enough. Over a period of time, without an exercise program our muscle mass decreases (atrophy) become weak and fat stores increases. The more you delay exercise the more difficult it will be to shed off the fat you have accumulated over time. Likewise when you start working out, take it slow. You cannot expect to lose 10kg of weight in just

a month or two that you accumulated over the years! It is unhealthy to lose more then 1 to 2 pounds/week. Remember too that your heart is a muscle, so the stronger it is the more blood it can circulate through the body, thus keeping you healthy just the way the human body was designed to do. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommends 150 min(2 1/2hrs) of moderate intensity exercise per week for Optimal physical health. That will be 3-5 sessions/ week. Though frequency, intensity, and duration can vary for beginners. To know your ideal weight simply just follow the formula Weight in kg height2 (m) The value you get is your BMI

ime to break out the cowboy boots and jeans, riding boots and leggings and maybe your best black work trousers and those cute high-heel booties you bought last year. They're all easy, almost no-fail pairings. Finding the right skirt to go with boots, however, is more likely to trip you up, especially this particular season when it seems anything goes with hemlines. Do long skirts get tall shafts or shorter ones? What's the rule on miniskirts? And can functional weather-friendly boots meet a fashionforward midiskirt somewhere on the middle of the calf? "Boots can do it better than almost anything when it comes to pulling your look together, but it also can cut you up," says celebrity stylist Cristina Ehrlich. She adds: "You have to put your outfit on. If your eye goes straight for the foot, then something isn't right. You want a full 'look.'" Since proportion matters, she suggests every outfit get the mirror test because what works for one skirt might not for the next, even if they're similar styles. It's all about lines. You don't really want the top of the boot to meet the hemline; it could be longer or shorter - and filled in, when needed, with opaque tights, says Jen Ford, fashion news director at Lucky magazine. Ehrlich, a style spokeswoman for Via Spiga, says the most foolproof boot choice is a to-the-knee shaft and a wedge heel, probably in black suede. But, she adds, you'd be surprised how easy it is to incorporate a dark purple, bottle green or gray suede into an existing wardrobe, even one rooted in black. With a two- or three-inch (5- or 7 1/2 centimeter) heel, there's really not an outfit you can't wear with these boots. She'd put them on in September and not take them off until April - and that's traveling to different places and climates. "With the wedge, you get comfort and gain a few inches. You can dress it up or dress it down," Ehrlich explains. "It's chic and cool." She put Ashley Greene in a pair recently for a daytime event. The "Twilight" star wore them with a fitted legging and a cashmere-and-leather baseball-style sweater, Ehrlich describes. And that was in sunny Los Angeles. "You can wear a boot in warmer cli-

probably not a good idea to plunge in after a long stint as a couch potato. Aerobics : Aerobic classes involve a lot of body movement and are designed to strengthen the cardiovascular system and provide an all round body workout. Its very common to use circuits of dance-like motions to get the heart rate up for atleast 20-30 mins and burn calories. Most classes involve a series of exercises and movements carefully choreographed to work on specific areas of the body or the whole body, Performed to upbeat music and the steps follow the beats of the songs. As popular as this workout and most loved among women, men should try this more often

since it is intense, high impact, takes less time then normal workouts, great fun and most importantly guys need the flexibility! Body-Sculpting : Coming on to this, body sculpting are exercise programs that are designed to help tone the muscles in specific areas of the body. Basically a muscle toning class. There are several different forms of exercise that can be a part of a body sculpting program, depending on the area of the body requiring the sculpting. Like upper body and lower body sculpting. Anyone can do this, who would like to firm up. Although it takes a few classes to learn proper form. Prepare to be real sore if you are a novice! Some Do’s and Dont’s • First thing it is always a good idea to see your doctor before you start any type of exercise program. This is extremely important if you have any chronic medical conditions such as asthma, hypertension, diabetes. • Secondly always wear crosstrainers at all times during workouts, not tennis shoes. Because cross-trainers allows for side to side movements. • Thirdly perform warm-up and cool-down in the form of stretches or low intensity exercise for a period of 5-10 mins before and after exercise to avoid muscle cramps. Keeping this few things in mind, start up move and shake towards a healthier and long life. Remember, One is never too old to start Exercise. In the end the decision is yours alone.

Boot it right! There's fall and spring, winter and summer - and there's boot season. For many fashion fans, that's the best time of year. mates," she says. "I had been based in Los Angeles for many years and winter was still synonymous with boots." (If it's really warm, capture the same spirit with an open-toe bootie, she suggests.) Ford recommends a workhorse boot that is just a couple of inches shorter than the knee, more like mid-calf. With tights in the same color, you'll still get the illusion of a longer leg, but there's a chance to do some trendy colorblocking here, and, she says, you can also capture the play-

ur goal is to stay one step ahead of the trends in decoration. With the entry of the New Year, here are our tips for decorating in 2011. It will be a year of color, patterns and inspiration. Use original patterns in your house and use them frequently. The patterns are the solution to poor environments. Use patterns to enliven and invigorate your space. Mix patterns and colors. The combination will create unique and original design's. The generic hotel environments are very exceeded. Mix different patterns and textures. Combine as many as you wish keeping in mind that the trick is the size variation. Patterns of animals and geometric shapes are considered neutral in relation to striped and floral patterns. Use wallpaper. If you have never used wallpaper, this year is the time to start. Use rugs with patterns. Try a rug with floral patterns in your living room. Will see that the atmosphere of your room will look more modern and fresh. Use bronze. It is a metal that is very fashionable this year. Be polite, hammered or old, this metal will be terrific as part of your home decor. Use gold. It is another metal that is back in fashion this year. Use multiple layers. The spaces that appear to have evolved over the years are more fashionable than the spaces created and decorated at the moment. Buy vintage items. Opt for old objects such as lamps, mirrors and decorative pieces for your home decor. The aim is to appear that the elements of your house were acquired over time rather than having been bought all at the same time at a large mall. Use platina. Specially aged objects. Mix and match collectibles. They don't need to be all the same size or color. Simply have to be pur-

chased with love. • Use old armchairs. Get rid of your desk chairs and dining chairs and consider buying antiques in second hand stores. • Recycle. 2011 is the year of recycling, reuse and transformation. • Think Pink. It's probably the color of the year. • Be creative and bold with your color choices. • Use color seedlings. They are deep and strong colors such as burgundy or olive green. • Use travertine. This limestone rock was very popular in 80 years and this year is back. It is very beautiful and is a renewable material. • Use tiles with geometric shapes in the original decor of your home. Hexagonal tiles, or trapezoids with stylized floral patterns. • Spend your budget in original lamps. It may seem a big investment but the final look of a room can be greatly improved with a beautiful lamp. • Use colored lampshades. Replace your white shade for a colorful and preferably with a garish color. • Garnish with the lighting. A lamp is not just a practical subject. A light source can be integrated in the decoration and function as a very important decorative element. • Store with style. The grooming is very important and boxes, drawers and cabinets can serve a dual purpose today. Some well-decorated boxes may serve not only to straighten objects but also decorate a room. • Reflect your personality. Let your home be a reflection of your personality, tastes and inspirations. fulness that can come with an ankle bootie, especially if you go for a lace-up style and at least a bit of a heel. It works for pencil skirts, longer lengths and even some minis, Ford says. It's that to-theknee skirt that will prove tricky with these boots, too. For that, there really is just the ankle boot. The most refined and sophisticated ankle boots that can pair with skirt suits (pencil skirt, please) have sculpted ankles, which most women will find flattering, says Erlich. Those booties also do the bohemian look justice, so you can wear them with a maxi skirt, too. There's some room for over-the-knee boots with long or short skirts if you're using a very careful eye about the proportion, but there's almost no reason to try. Shoe designer Stuart Weitzman says over-the-knee boots already "had their run" a few seasons ago. The buzz now, he says, is about the boots that bring you fashion and function. He likes the way faux fur and other luxe trim now adorn weather friendly boots. It means, he says, that women don't have to change their footwear when they get into the office or to a restaurant if there is snow or rain outside. "We've turned weather boots into a fashion-looking item. ... Those are great with your workday dress or skirt. They're a little bit chunkier but they don't have to be 'rain boots,'" Weitzman says. "We've taken lessons from Uggs and Hunter and grabbed on to that by making them cool fashion looks that you can wear with anything." If shaft and shape matter to your hemline, heel doesn't seem to be as big a deal. Unlike a strappy sandal where there's usually not much to marvel at other than the heel, the boot itself is more the conversation piece, observes Ehrlich. "There's something really flattering about boots with heels," agrees Lucky's Ford, "but it's really that there's something very elegant and ladylike and flattering about boots in general. It doesn't mean flats are out." Ehrlich says the riding boot covers almost all of her bases, especially her favorite long wool column skirts. But that's her, not anyone else. "Every style is not going to be for every woman. I really think of shopping for boots like jeans, but when you find the right pair, it's worth it," Ehrlich says. Times of India

WHO ARE YOU TO JUDGE ME, WHO AM I TO JUDGE YOU?

O

n November 7, 2011 Kyong Welfare Forum Delhi celebrated Tokhu Emong festival under the theme “One Heart…One Spirit”. The venue Constitution Club (near India gate), being centrally located had attracted a full packed audience. It was one of the most colourful extravaganzas of the North East community in Delhi which had attracted thousands of people cutting across caste, creed, colour, culture and nationalities to witness the most colourful unforgettable and enriching ‘Tokhu Emong’ event. The festival exhibited and showcased the most representative and vibrant flavours of North East region and Nagaland in particular. Several renowned personalities like Rahul Ram from the famous Indian Ocean Rock band, Tara Douglas Secretary, Adivasi Arts Trust (UK), Thu Lee (Asian Best Classical Guitarist), Dr.Sushmita Dasgupta, eminent economist, Subir Ghosh a renowned journalist and writer, Shiv Kumar (Mr. India 2011), and many more are a witness to the event. The chief guest of the evening was L. Kievom, a retired Indian Foreign Service who had spent more than 30 years as Indian ambassador in several countries. His popularity as a person of strong character is not only well known in the country but also in many parts of world where he had been posted as Indian Ambassador. He is also a well known writer and a historian. Another special attraction of the event was the release of the book “Response to Climate Change” by Fr. Abraham Lotha & Dr. Zuchamo Yanthan. The book was released by the chief guest after giving a brief introduction of the book. Adapting to climate change is one way of responding to the inevitable. Yet in order for one

‘Tokhu Emong Fest: One Heart…One Spirit’

to respond meaningfully and intelligently, one has to first understand the problem. By critically examining the issues and debates on global climate change, this book brings together scholarship in India on the subject which helps to inform responses for a collaborative effort to combat climate change. Responding to the challenge of global climate change is a collective responsibility according to one’s capabilities. The hosts of the colourful extravaganza evening were Abeni Ezung, Elans Ngullie and Zubemo Humtsoe. The event started with a prayer by Yanpolumi Yanthan Pariyar, faculty of western music at St.Thomas School followed by a melodious Lotha Naga folk song titled ‘Longtsua’ by the members of Delhi Lotha Christian Fellowship (DLCF). The gathering was welcomed by the convener of the committee, who also spelt out the significance of ‘Tokhu Emong Festival’. He started by saying Nagaland state as a land of festivals and had encouraged the gatherings who are mostly of foreign nationals and from other parts of the country to visit Nagaland to experience the most colourful ‘Hornbill festival’ starting from December 1 to 7. Elaborating further he adds: Lotha Naga tribe celebrate ‘Tokhu Emong’ for so many reasons but the most impressive aspect of this festival is that past mistakes and heart feelings are forgiven and new ties and bonds of closer intimacy are build again. During these amazing nine days of the festival, delicious food and drinks are prepared to

share with all friends and relatives. The speaker further mentioned that one very interesting custom that Lotha Naga follows during this festival time is that they exchange cooked meat. It is believed, the number of pieces of meat given, denotes the depth of friendship and ties. Besides, Lotha Naga community altogether enjoys traditional songs and dances during ‘Tokhu Emong’. He had provoked himself by asking how relevant is ‘Tokhu Emong’ in today’s fast changing world? He gave his personal reflection by saying the relevancy of ‘Tokhu Emong’ lies in understanding and reflecting on the connections we have with our land, labour and how we can connect our thoughts about respecting nature, resources and our gratitude responsibility to nurture the land that gives us life. He further says that the significance of the harvest festival is not only about celebrating and eating. For our ancestors they worked very hard and invested their time and energy in helping one another to arrive at the tokhu celebration. That is why forgiveness and reconciliation is a central theme for ‘Tokhu Emong festival’. Folk dances are indispensable to the Nagas’ cultural life so the crowd were entertained by a war dance performed by the Lotha students union Delhi. One of the main attractions of the fest was the fashion show. Some of the models are of national level super model. They had displayed the rich collection of Lotha Naga costumes

which has been gathering national and international attention within the fashion industry. Esther Jamir, a national level super model had captured the attention of the crowd with her Lotha traditional costumes styled by Stephen Lotha, a national level stylist. The entire choreography was managed by Stephen Lotha and the stage was designed by Rembomo Odyuo, a research scholar at IGNOU. Thu Lee who is considered to be the best classical guitarist in Asia had presented few classical pieces capturing the attention of the crowd and they kept asking for more. Another main attraction was the presence of Mr. India 2011 with Junior Mr. India 2011 Pawan who had displayed fitness awareness campaign. One most awaited item was the traditional couple show competition. The competition was won by Lotha Naga tribe represented by Angelina Yanthan and Renthungo Tsanglao, followed by Sumi Naga tribe and Angami Naga tribe. ‘Divine Connection’, the most awaited performance…It was intentionally left at the end in order to let every individual enjoy their performance. Without any doubt they had stole the attention of the crowd with their magnificent performance. No wonder Divine Connection had won the MTV Rock on contest 2010. The colourful extravaganza ‘Tokhu Emong’ event concluded with a vote of thank pronounced by Mr. Stephen Yanthan, Chairman of Kyong Welfare Forum Delhi and closing prayer by Pastor Chenithung Ezung. The event was sponsored by Chief Minister of Nagaland, NEC Group of companies, Naga International Vaganza (NIV), ALS-Alternative Learning Systems, Likyaro Weaving & Handloom Nagaland, Delhi Lotha Christian Fellowship, GraceH Boutique, Dream TeamHearts, and Fountain Flow Society. Social Issues and Discrimination in Nagaland

P

olitical and Social issues are dirty and evil. Are they? I was always told, “Stay away from those issues.” The intention is understood, it means to be on the safer side of the edge. But, for me, it’s so undesirable to wait for my destiny get rotten and finally to be pushed off the border. There is no escape because one day or the other, we will become the victims of social discrimination. The sooner we unearth our social issues, the better. Remember the Indus Valley Civilization 33001900 BCE and how Hindu society was divided into four different castes in the later stage? Can you believe that’s officially how social discrimination started in India? Yet, there are many who deny the existence of social discrimination in India. On the other hand, 'white-centric' is a different concept. Many historians associate the term White-centric with the British, especially in India. And, unquestionably with the British colonialism, the love for white skin people and prejudice against brown, yellow and black people in the third world countries started. How about social discrimination in Nagaland? Is social discrimination an utter new concept in Nagaland? I guess not. Listen to the stories of our grandparents or great grandparents. They have no idea what social discrimination is all about, but social discrimination had always been a part of us, although the degree of discrimination differs from one place to the other. But, those are the bygone, and there is no point lamenting over their issues. Let’s dig the current hidden social evils and discrimination in our society. A few days ago, there was something unusual posted on ‘The Naga Blog’ a page created under facebook. This is how the post goes, “No hard feelings.... you say you guys get racial discrimination in mainland...even people from mainland get racial discrimination in Nagaland. What about that?” Isn’t that an interesting opinion from someone who once lived in Nagaland? The most fascinating comments were picked from the blog, hear it out. Comments: On second thought, the degree of discrimination might be a difference Comments: What you sow, so shall you reap. Comments: Two wrongs does not make a right. Comments: What you want an EAC post in Nagaland, buy a plot? Never!!! Comments: How can you say there is racial discrimination in North east India against the mainland.... people in mainland consider people from northeast as Chinkeys or Foreigner from East Asian countries. Comments: Have you heard of anyone from UP,

Bihari lady molested in Nagaland? Comments: I think the degree of discrimination differs…girls are whistled, molested, teased, harassed, asked sexual favors for job promotions…guys are beaten, denied rental houses, called less intelligent people, dogs meat, snakes, lizard eaters, denied career opportunities etc. In Nagaland…you’ll find none of those towards mainland Indians… Comments: People calling…educated yet don’t know where Nagaland is…double standard mainland Indians. They consider us uncivilized, uncultured… but we are far better than them even in basic sanitary

practices…don’t disagree discrimination in North east, particularly Nagaland, but there is a huge difference… Comments: I was asked by my principal where I was from. When I answered Nagaland… he said...'why did you come to India.’ Comments: Indian guys are too fetish about fair skin....largely the work of media... promoting fair skin… Comments: This post is so stupid…a mainlander being added to our positive Naga's group Comments: Don’t even try to compare the treatments… Comments: I have many mainland Indian friends… .I respect their opinions and views and also acknowledge those friends of mine who always promoted better understanding and relationship between the two great divides are a minority in mainland. Comments: Generally speaking, one good thing I noticed about the mainland Indians is they respect knowledge packed wise people with the right amount of courage more than material holdings which is almost the opposite here.

Comments: Discrimination…happens everywhere in the world…agreed with some opinions shared above…we should all educate each other. Comments: Who began the racial War....we didn’t know mainland India existed. Comments: Guys, if we can Insult, then we should be able to take an insult, thus the power of racism dies…it becomes a toothless LION. Comments: Generally, calling someone else names is not discriminating. I don’t know where racial discriminating came to India…must have been due to exposure to the Western ways of living. Comments: The Nagas see people from mainland as a threat to their very existence, their business and culture…mainland see the Nagas as a species of lower order. Comments: We are all born with some kind of discrimination…others discriminate us and we also discriminate others in one way or the other especially non Nagas. We are very kind and hospitable towards foreigners but it changes dramatically when we see a mia or a deswahli… the moment we know that a person is related or is a friend...our attitude and everything changes dramatically. In a foreign land you are simply an Indian. To the Indian, you are a Naga, to the Nagas, you are from a tribe, to your tribe, you belong to a clan etc…nothing wrong as long as we treat everyone equally. People respect us for who we are and only when we have earned it. Comments: Blame it all on stereotyping… there is no place in this world where racial discrimination does not exist…we don’t care if a person is from Chennai, Kolkata, Maharashtra we call them all Biharis or Dishwalis in short for labors…we should educate our people…the ill effects of racial profiling and discrimination…I’ve seen Naga people treating outsider with respect too, but generalization can’t be ignored. Start with you and me, and build a better future. We do have social discriminations in Nagaland. But, as comments suggested, the level of discrimination differ. Is it time we find a solution to our issues or become vindictive. The choice is ours. I say, let’s find a solution and make Nagaland a better place to live. How to go about finding a solution? The choice is ours again. “Love one another” as we were always told or fabricate a concrete governing body to punish the offenders. The issue is not at end by building a healthier relationship only with people from other regions, but we Nagas should respect one another. It’s time we huddle and build a heaven on earth. Peace be with us. Andres M. Molier Travel and Social Events Journalist

Dedicated to all the NOSY Naga girls/guys looking out for JUICY gossip, rumours and judging others 1 Thessalonians 4:11 ... "Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life and MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!" Quit being the moral police patrolling around your NOTUN BOSTI neighbourhood and snooping into your neighbour's bedroom/kitchen discussions!! As long as you go around pointing out people’s faults, judging, being critical and condemning others, you will never REACH your highest POTENTIAL in LIFE! Matthew 7:1 says, Judge Not so that you won’t be judged. This is in perfect harmony with Issac Newton’s 3rd law of motion that brought about all the great machinery and inventions of our times – “For every Action, there is an equal and opposite reaction”. It is also sad that this judgemental attitude is pretty evident in theologians and people pursuing Bible studies. Their Holier than Thou attitude brings out a stark contrast against Jesus’ attitude towards the lady who committed adultery. Jesus was teaching one day at the temple when the religious leaders dragged out a lady whom they claimed had committed adultery and that SHE should be STONED to Death (Watch the movie “The Stoning of Soraya”). Jesus SIMPLY IGNORED THEM!! With this simple action, we see How powerful SILENCE is! We learn that If we are always judgemental, finding faults in others and pointing fingers at others, God won’t even pay heed to your prayers and press the IGNORE button on you! Especially among Nagas, you go around saying “Oh she is a woman of loose character”, “He has a mistress”, “Oh, I’m so glad I am walking in the right path, I am BETTER than her, I’m better than HIM” etc, and Judging those around you to make yourself feel better! Before you gossip about another girl, before you criticize a drunkard father, before you judge your neighbours for quarrelling every day, FIRST! You don’t know what they feel inside, you only see what they express OUTSIDE because of the pain they feel inside! We tend to forget to that there are people who have suffered more than we can imagine! While the woman was lying down at Jesus’ feet, the priests and those judgemental people surrounded them, shouting accusations and saying she should be stoned for her SINS! Jesus simply replied, “Those of you who are without any sin, may come forward and throw the stone!” None came forward! These religious leaders were NOT in the church preaching, nor were they out in the streets feeding the POOR and NEEDY. NO, they were busy looking out for the latest gossips about affairs and digging into people’s personal lives. Not only religious leaders but even amongst us, we tend to seldom GOSSIP and find faults in others, look for somebody to CONDEMN!! Don’t we have work to do? Get productive? Learn new things, technology, software etc gain knowledge and incorporate those in our lives and improve our community? 1 Thessalonians 4:11 - Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business!(Dig not into other’s personal life, just look at your own first before pointing that finger. We got bigger and better things to do in LIFE than gossip! Small minds discuss people, medium minds discuss events, GREAT MINDS DISCUSS IDEAS! So which one are you??

Understanding tax and the 'tax' menace.

The dictionary defines tax as 'Charge against a citizen's person or property or activity for the support of government'. At first, as citizens of India we pay various taxes directly and indirectly. In Nagaland though we are exempted from paying Income Taxes we stil have to pay service tax, sales tax both forthe state(NST) and the centre (CST), professional tax etc. Next comes the various cess that we pay like the 2% education cess that we pay on our telephone bills which funds the SSA and the RMSA money. Some more taxes can be Tax on minerals and forests products, vechicular tax collected by the transport Dept., customs duty, excise duties, electricity tax, octroi etc. (Some states in India collect tax if you install a power genset in a commercial building.) Then comes the various corporation/municipality taxes, the ones collected by DMC at the moment. All these are the legal taxes that we Nagas pay at present except we do not pay Property tax and Income tax. The DMC has tax for personal bicycles(annually?) rickshaws, thela and autorickshaws daily. Then thay have the DMC entry tax for goods vehicles and taxis. Next they have tax for the butchers, fishmongers, pavement vegetable vendors and maybe the coolies/labourers too. Next comes the not so legal collections from the various Unions and Associations. It is legal if it is voluntary but not so if it is forced. Dimapur Auto Drivers Union(DADU)- a registered trade union if I am not mistaken that collects regularly, All India Petroleum Transport something something Union collects daily from trucks and other carriers. Then comes the taxi drivers union, the truck drivers union, truck owners union, labourers union, thela pullers union, rickshaw pullers union, xerox operators association, motor garage owners association, hotels and restaurants association, vegetable suppliers union, medicine wholesellers union. you name it and its there. Many join these unions/association on their own volition and they work to help and assist each other and their collections are mostly annual or monthly in some case. But those activities of the low rung ones nevertheless big in terms of numbers are forced to join these unions and many a times the leaders/volunteers of these unions have someone in one of the factions as a protector. And very sadly they have to pay regularly both to the DMC and to the various unions. Then there are also more entry tax collected from commercial vehicles when venturing out of DMC areas, e.g. the adhoc town councils in areas beyond DMC jurisdictions. We also have to accept that the Police check post do collect a lot. I overheard that the weekly target of Chumukedima check post was nearly a 90k, imagine how much it must be for new field check post. Next comes the UG tax starting right from New Field gate. It seems it is Rs.10k-30k for any goods truck to enter inside. Now the increase in the number of factions have worsened the situation. For any organisation a good economic stronghold is the key to assist them in achieving many of their goals. Our UGs quickly learned about it and where else but Dimapur was the key to achieve it. Now we know nothing runs without them out here in Dimapur. We also need to understand that the corruption that was prevalent before they took control was continued if not more. Those days supply was the reason for price rise these days 'tax' is the reason for it. But what Dimapur is facing for the last few years is the menace of the so-called tax which the other factions too have learned and the eyes of all the factions are fixed now on Dimapur. The uncertainty factor especially for the business community has risen. Being good businessman requires coming to a settlement and when we think it is taken care of then another faction's letter arrives. Then comes the calendar sale from the factions and the DMC. Atleast the student Unions have stoped donation drives and selling calendars. Next comes those who collect tax in the guise of the factions, or the 'un-authorised' collections most of the times by friends & families of someone who is in a faction. The tax continues to the households too through the village/colony councils. The annual sanitation tax that the DMC collects. Then the Army rations, household tax, soul tax, identity cards for Non-locals all from 2-3 factions. (The Naga Blog was created in 2007 by Yanpvuo Kikon. Trial starts in high-profile telecom airwaves case Former bureaucrats come out in support of CAG on 2G issue

The trial began Friday, November 11 of 17 people accused of involvement in India’s biggest corruption scandal over the sale of telecommunications spectrum nearly four years ago. (AP File Photo)

New Delhi, November 11 (iANS): Over seven months after the first set of charges were framed in the second generation (2G) spectrum case, the trial began Friday despite the prime accused, former telecom minister A. Raja, refusing to query witnesses pending closure of the probe. “We are beginning the trial, whether you cross-examine witnesses or not,” Special Judge O.P. Saini, who is presiding over the special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court, said, setting

the stage for a verdict in one of India’s most high-profile cases. There was also some added drama when the accused said they were unable to hear what was going on and demanded that the trial proceedings be shifted to a larger venue, rather than the cramped and crowded court room allocated to this case. There are 17 accused -- 14 individuals including Raja and his party colleague and Rajya Sabha member Kanimozhi Karunanidhi -- and three companies, Unitech Wireless, Swan

New Delhi, November 11 (PTi): Supporting the Comptroller and Auditor General on the presumptive loss figure in the 2G spectrum allocation, a group of former bureaucrats on Friday accused the politicians of undermining the institution. The group, which met today, pointed that the key element in parliamentary democracy is the financial accountability of the Executive to Parliament, which is secured through the institution of the CAG. The former officials, “deplored the attempt that is being made to denigrate the important role of this crucial institution.” Inameeting,20formerseniorbureaucrats,includingthoseassociated with the CAG, passed a resolution supporting the CAG and lamented that the Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, which has to enforce the accountability of the Executive to Parliament, seems to be in “disarray”withmembersofbothrulingandoppositionpartiesbeingatloggerheads with each other. The statement signed by S Krishnan, former AdditionalSecretaryintheFinanceMinistryandothers, saidthe“casualty” of the development is the importance of accountability. “The instrument of accountability (CAG) is wittingly or unwittingly being damaged, and the enforcer of accountability, Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee seems to be paralysed by internal dissensions,” it said. Referring to the Rs 2,645 crore loss figure projected by former DG, Audit (Post and Telecommunications) R P Singh which was overruled by CAG Vinod Rai subsequently, the statement said it was “amazing” that the routine bureaucratic practice of superior correcting the work of a subordinate is being given a “sinister interpretation”.

Telecom and Reliance Telecom, named as co-accused in the case. Minutes before the trial was to commence, Raja’s counsel Sushil Kumar said the witnesses would not be cross-examined till such time the probe was complete and all statements as mandated under Section 244 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) were supplied to him. “The date for examination of witnesses has been fixed without complying with the mandate provision of CrPc. The applicant has no option but to

defer the cross-examination,” said Kumar. Following this, former telecom secretary Siddharth Behura, also among the 17 co-accused named in the formal charges, also refused to participate in the questioning, saying: “I do not want to cross examine the witnesses.” Judge Saini, however, declined their pleas and said trial would proceed. He also ordered the recording of the statement of the first prosecution witness -- Anand Subramaniam of Reliance Capital. The court had

summoned two other witnesses for examination Friday -- A.N. Sethuraman of Reliance Group and Vinod Kumar Budhiraja of Etisalat DB Telecom. They are among the 28 witnesses whom the CBI wants to examine in the first instance. The probe agency had filed the first set of charges April 2 in which it had named as accused Raja, his former personal secretary R.K. Chandolia, Behura, Swan Telecom’s Shahid Usman Balwa and Vinod Goenka, Unitech Wireless’ Sanjay Chan-

dra. It had also named Reliance Group’s Gautam Doshi, Surendra Pipara and Hari Nair, besides the three firms. The second set of charges April 25 included Kanimozhi, Kalaignar TV’s Sharad Kumar, Cineyug Film`s Karim Morani and Kusegaon’s Asif Balwa and Rajeev Agarwal. All the accused are in judicial custody and lodged in Tihar Jail here. Subramaniam told the court that while he did not have any occassion to work with Reliance Group’s Doshi, Pipara and Nayar, he was not aware if Anil

Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Group, was also chairman of Swan Telecom. Sethuraman, on his part, said he did know the thrree accused from the Reliance Group “as they are my colleagues” and also Swan Telecom. His cross-examination will continue Monday. The judge also extended the remand of the 14 accused till then. The prosecution and the defence are also scheduled to examine Ashish Karyekar of Reliance Infrastructure during the proceedings Monday.

‘Why is Sonia silent on corruption?’ Mamata Banerjee again warns Maoists in Junglemahal

JAiPUr, November 11 (PTi): BJP leader L K Advani today questioned Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s “silence” on corruption issue and asked what she was doing as UPA’s “most powerful leader” to curb the menace. “Corruption has been an issue that has been widely discussed in every town and city in recent times. But why is the Congress President silent on the issue?” Advani said while addressing a press conference here. “Why have steps to curb corruption not been taken? As far as the Prime Minister is concerned, it has been said that whatever the DMK ministers had done was after permission from the Prime Minister or other senior ministers. I demand that the Congress President breaks her silence on this subject,” he said. Advani, in a written statement, referred to Gandhi’s speech read out in her absence in Uttarakhand on Wednesday and said she had stated that corruption cannot be removed by speeches alone. “I totally agree with her and raise a counter question. What she is doing as the most powerful leader of the UPA government to contain corruption?” he asked. He said, “Right from 2G spectrum scam to Commonwealth (Games and) a host of other instances

New States should not be formed casually: LK Advani

JAiPUr, November 11 (PTi): In the backdrop Chief Minister Mayawati’s reported plans to divide UP, BJP leader L. K. Advani on Friday said that new states should not be formed “casually” and more consultations were needed on the issue. “On the division of Uttar Pradesh, I would say any decision should only be taken after consultations. Offhand nothing can be stated,” he said, adding that it has already been divided into two parts as the demand for a separate Uttarakhand had been pending for a long time. Replying to questions, Advani said, “States cannot be formed casually. We also formed three states. But the demand for those states had continued for a long time and after proper consultations and consideration, we worked towards the formation of those states (Chhatisgarh, Uttarakhand and Jharkhand).” On the issue of formation of a separate Telangana, he said that this “demand has been there for 25—30 years, but in the past two years, it has been handled in such a way by the UPA government that many people have committed suicide. And in the past 35-40 days all work has come to a halt.” The BJP leader said that his party would raise the issue of black money in the Winter Session of Parliament and ask the government to reveal the steps taken to bring it back. Advani also suggested that simultaneous elections should be held for Lok Sabha and state assemblies as frequent polls hampered good governance. of rampant corruption, she has maintained not only silence but gross indifference. Had she asserted her authority in time in an effective manner, much of public revenue would not have been plundered. “Even now explosive evidence is emerging against senior ministers of the Congress in the 2G scam and gross impropriety of a

Congress chief minister in the Commonwealth scam and yet they are being defended in the most shameful manner while Sonia Gandhi maintains her silence and inaction,” he alleged. Advani said, “Therefore, she cannot escape her own responsibility, obligation and accountability. The nation will draw its own inference.”

bAlArAmPUr (wb), November 11 (PTi): Warning Maoists who have rejected her ultimatum to surrender, West Bengal Chief Minister

Mamata Banerjee on Friday hoped that ‘good sense’ would still prevail and warned that her patience was wearing thin. Banerjee on her third visit to Junglemahal said “I have given lot of time and if good sense prevails I have no objection. I will give you food, jobs, houses and roads and consider your cases.” “I had hoped that you would demand rice for the poor, roads and jobs. If you have the guts stop killing covertly and come out

Maoist operations by the joint security forces for four months expecting the Maoists to come forward with demands for the people of Junglemahal, she said, “You are not my enemies, but those who kill are my enemies.” Referring to the reported hit list of her party leaders drawn up by Maoists, she said “Do you want to kill me? (Union minister) Mukul (Roy)? Or (MP) Subhendu (Adhikary?” Banerjee also alleged that the Maoists had teamed up with CPI(M) cadres. “The CPI(M) harmards have infiltrated into the Maoists camp and are using CPI(M) guns. They have a joint venture.”

Unified Command in J&K to decide on AFSPA: AK Antony

New Delhi, November 11 (PTi): Amid controversy over the issue of revocation of AFSPA from parts of Jammu and Kashmir, defence minister A K Antony on Friday said the final decision on it would be taken by the Unified Command Headquarters in the state. “The CCS last year decided to leave it to the Unified Command to take a decision on partial withdrawal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Jammu and Kashmir,” Antony told reporters here today. The defence minister was asked to comment on the issue of revocation of AFSPA and Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah’s statement that he had the authority to withdraw it from the state.

Abdullah had said, “As chief minister of the state, I have the authority to lift AFSPA.” He has been seeking partial withdrawal of AFSPA in areas where militancy has been contained and where the Army does not operate. Antony said the Defence Ministry has already conveyed its view to the government on the “sensitive” issue and there should be no public debate on it. At the last Unified Command meeting in Jammu on Wednesday, Abdullah had said that AFSPA had to be partially withdrawn from the state. During the nearly three-hour long meeting, the Army gave a presentation highlighting the importance of AFSPA in fighting militancy in the state and also suggested

that even a partial withdrawal will be detrimental to the security apparatus. The Defence Ministry has supported the Army on the issue, which thinks that revocation of the controversial act will handicap the capability of the force to conduct counter insurgency operations. Recently, Northern Army Commander Lt Gen K T Parnaik had said the Army requires the provisions to enable it to act and removing the AFSPA from certain areas of the state will make it difficult for the Army to operate. Debate over the partial revocation of AFSPA and Disturbed Areas Act began last month when Abdullah announced that the Acts will be revoked from parts of the state “within few days”.

New Delhi, November 11 (iANS): The Youth Congress will hold a national meet here Nov 24-25 under Rahul Gandhi, but he may give up charge of the organisation soon after to move on to a larger role in the Congress, party sources say. “It may be an occasion for Rahulji to bid adieu to us. He has to move ahead,” a leader of the Youth Congress who did not want to be identified said. The massive youth meet will deliberate on several topical issues like the fight against corruption and the role of the Youth Congress to back the party during crisis situations, the leader added. “In Rahulji’s typical style, elaborate and meticulous preparations have begun. But with utmost secrecy,” he said. Though the venue of the meet has not been finalised, newlyelected Youth Congress office bearers from assembly constituency to national levels have been asked to reach Delhi Nov 24, the sources said. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and other leaders are likely to address the youth meet. Rahul Gandhi, 41, who was appointed party general secretary in September 2007 with the charge of the student and youth wings - the National Students Union of India (NSUI) and the Youth Congress - has worked hard to promote the youth into leadership positions in the party and legislatures. During the past four years, he travelled to colleges and universities across the country to urge students and youth to enter public life and join developmental activities. But the Youth Congress that Rahul Gandhi is largely seen to have revitalised may meet under his leadership for the last time this November. “The Youth Congress meet may mark the end of one chapter of Rahulji’s work - as the in-charge of the organisation - and the beginning of a new chapter in charge of wider political issues,” the Youth Congress leader said. The meet assumes significance as it is held during parliament’s winter session in which the party is likely to face the heat over the Lokpal bill, political observers say. It will also come four days after senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani concludes his 38-day Jan Chetna Yatra in the national capital. Political circles have been abuzz with talk that Rahul Gandhi, a Congress general secretary, may assume a higher role as the working president of the party. “There is no suspense about it. He (Rahul Gandhi) has a role, which is increasing constantly. In the natural course, his role will go on increasing. This is what Congress men want and this is what in their opinion is natural,” Congress chief spokesperson Janardhan Dwivedi had said here.

lUCKNow, November 11 (AgeNCieS): Poll-bound UP is now witnessing a war between political parties over Right to Education (RTE) with Congress, BSP and BJP trying to take the credit of this education-for-all scheme. While Congress is saying that its government at the centre has passed the RTE Act, the BSP argues that it was dalit icon Babsaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar who incorporated right to education in the Constitution of India, the BJP points out that Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government had in 2002 made free and compulsory education a fundamental right in the Constitution for all children upto the age of 14 years. Ironically, none of them have talked about the fact that November 11, which is celebrated as National Education Day, is actually held to mark the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, India’s first education minister, who laid the foundation of modern education in free India. The UPA government has circulated a letter written by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh which was read out to children in 14 lakh elementary

schools in India on Friday. In the letter, Prime Minister has narrated his struggle for education and how, despite coming from poor rural family, he crossed all difficulties to acquire education. “I went to a school in a village that had no electricity. My village did not have a pukka road or fast vehicles. I would walk miles to reach my school...I worked as hard as I could and the nation has always rewarded me for my efforts,” the Prime Minister’s letter states. He also has stated that during his school days education was not free as it is now after implementation of RTE Act by the Congress-led UPA government. To counter this, UP chief minister and BSP supremo Mayawati has issued a letter addressing children in three lakhs primary schools in UP. Mayawati has narrated how her grandfather Mangal Sen encouraged her to get education like her brothers and how she went on to acquire higher education, served as a teacher and social activist before joining politics. “Hard work and determination made me perform better than my brothers,” she

has written. She has also stated that it was Ambedkar who as chairperson of the Constitution drafting committee had in 1950 introduced the provision of free and compulsory education in the Constitution for children upto 14 years of age. “Babasaeb fought castism and inequality to acquire education,” she said. Significantly, now BJP has also joined the issue by giving credit to Atal Bihari Vajpayee government for amending the Constitution in 2002 to make free and compulsory education to all the children in the age group of 6-14 years as a fundamental right. “Right to education is a reality today because of the BJP-led NDA government under Vajpayeeji,” said BJP national vice-president leader Kalraj Mishra. He slammed both Congress and BSP for trying to seek electoral gains by politicising education for children. Taking a dig at the `letter politics’ between the UPA and BSP governments, Mishra said that instead of fighting for credit, the focus should be on effective implementation of RTE. He added that the benefit of the RTE has not reached grassroots as yet.

9 INTERNATIONAL Turkish quake death toll rises to 20 Italy Senate votes as Berlusconi era nears end Saturday

The Morung Express

van, turkey, november 11 (aP): The death toll from the second earthquake to hit eastern Turkey in about two weeks rose to 20 on Friday as several rescue teams clawed through heaps of concrete to search for two journalists believed trapped in the rubble of a collapsed hotel. Colleagues of the two reporters from Turkey’s Dogan news agency were among dozens of people anxiously waiting for news outside the wreckage of the Bayram Hotel, one of the two hotels that fell apart when the 5.7-magnitude quake hit the eastern city of Van late Wednesday. “In our profession we always come across disasters,” Dogan agency’s general manager, Ugur Cebeci, told The Associated Press as he watched rescuers in red overalls search through the debris of the once five-story hotel. “But we are grappling with helplessness here.” Journalists and relief workers — who had rushed to the region in the aftermath of a more powerful earthquake that hit the region on Oct. 23 — themselves became victims when the hotel, weakened by the earlier temblor, collapsed Wednesday. The fatalities include a Japanese relief worker who had come to distribute aid to quake survivors. Rescuers pulled out eight bodies from the wreckage of the Bayram Hotel as well as the low-budget Aslan Hotel on Friday, raising the death toll to 20. The dead include at least eight employees of a construction company who were in Van to assemble temporary housing units for survivors in nearby villages. It was not known Fri-

day how many people remained buried in the rubble of the two collapsed hotels. “We are not able to hear anyvoices,”saidDisastermanagement official Askit Dayi. “But still we are removing layers of concrete in a way as if there are survivors.” He said the search efforts at both sites could end by midnight Friday. RecepSalcioftherescuegroup Akut told NTV television that freezingtemperaturesatnight werealsoposingathreattoany possible survivors. Rescue teams were using an emergency evacuation plan to determine possible escape routes within the pancaked building, said Bulent Gunduz of the Siemens private rescue team. “We can see all escape

routes and fire stairs,” said Gunduz. “The emergency floor plan has become like a compass for us.” On Friday, Turkey notified countries offering help to deal with the new quake that it would accept tents and prefabricatedhomestohouse survivors through the winter. Angry residents protested in Van, accusing authorities of failing to properly inspect the buildings following the Oct. 23 quake that killed more than 600 people. Police responded with pepper spray. Those protests spread to national TV when one anchorman, Mustafa Yenigun of Flash TV, covered his mouth with a black tape Thursday evening as he held a banner that read: “people are under

the rubble because of uncompleted tasks” — a reference to the failure to fully inspect damaged buildings. Rescue worker Ramazan Demiregen said the steel rods in the columns of the collapsed Bayram Hotel were too thin. The government said it was investigating possible negligence, and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said legal action would be taken against officials or experts who may have allowed the two hotels to continue operating. Turks paid tribute to the dead Japanese aid worker, Atsushi Miyazaki, calling him a benefactor on Twitter and lamenting that he died in a relatively weak earthquake com-

pared to the massive one and tsunami that devastated Japan in March. President Abdullah Gul sent a message of condolence to Japan’s Emperor Akihito, saying Miyazaki and an injured colleague would be remembered with gratitude by the Turkish people. “His name is Atsushi, his surname is human,” wrote Ertugrul Ozkok, a columnist for Hurriyet newspaper on Friday. “A great Samurai.” Miyazaki had helped distribute meat to quake survivors in Van province during Eid al-Adha, the Muslim feast of sacrifice. Other Japanese workers said they were thankful for Turkey’s aid workers who came to help Japan in March, local media reported.

rome, november 11 (reuters): Italy's Senate on Friday began debating economic reforms demanded by the European Union at the start of a rapid process that will end the Berlusconi era and clear the way for an emergency government within days. The upper house began debating the package and is likely to pass it later in the day. It will then go to the lower house which will vote on Saturday, triggering the resignation of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. Former European Commissioner Mario Monti, who is expected to replace the billionaire media magnate, was welcomed with applause when he took his place in the upper house after being appointed a Senator for life by President Giorgio Napolitano. The appointment, transforming Monti from academic to legislator, is seen as a clear sign that he will be asked to head a largely technocratic government to push through urgent reforms and head off a perilous crisis. The new government is expected by Monday. With Italy, the euro zone's third largest economy teetering close to losing control of its towering public debt, global financial markets have been panicked by the weeks of political uncertainty in Italy and the country's borrowing costs rocketed above sustainable levels on Wednesday. Deeply alarmed by the crisis, Napolitano then banged heads to end the uncertainty and get a new gov-

ernment in place within days. In a sign of the global concern at the crisis, US President Barack Obama telephoned Napolitano on Thursday, expressing confidence that Italy could have an interim government in place quickly to reassure markets. Berlusconi, who lost his majority in a vote on Tuesday, has promised to resign after the financial stability law is passed by both houses of parliament. The delay to his resignation, and talk of a long limbo before elections unnerved the markets. Berlusconi is expected to resign after the Chamber of Deputiesvoteonthemeasures on Saturday and Napolitano could give a mandate to Monti as early as Saturday night or Sunday so that a government could be in place before markets open on Monday. The expected end to political chaos appeared to

have brought some calm to markets with yields on 10 year bonds back under 7 percent, the level countries like Ireland and Greece hit before being forced to seek an international bailout. Monti, a highly respected international figure, has been favoured by markets for weeks as the most suitable figure to lead a national unity government to urgently push through painful austerity measures. A Monti government would be supported by most centrists and the biggest opposition force, the Democratic Party. But Berlusconi's chief coalition partner, the Northern League, has said it would not back Monti and it is unclear how much support he will enjoy from Berlusconi's ruling PDL party. With Berlusconi dropping his previous insistence on early elections, cracks have begun to widen between factions in the PDL, pointing towards a possible reshaping of the centreright. The party, an amalgamation of Berlusconi's original Forza Italia party and the National Alliance, an offshoot of the old far-right MSI party, is built entirely around the billionaire entrepreneur and may break up once he leaves the stage. I see this risk. If there's no mediation, there's a risk of a breakup, Gianfranco Rotondi, a minister without portfolio who opposes a Monti-led government, told the daily La Stampa, adding that his opinion was widely shared in the PDL.

banGkok, november 11 (aP): Sahattaya Vitayakaseat placed a tiny crownshaped boat made from curled banana leaves and marigold flowers into the murky brown water and let it drift toward a park bench submerged by Bangkok’s surging Chao Phraya river. She then closed her eyes and prayed, silently begging forgiveness from Thailand’s goddess of water who some believe is responsible for a three-month wave of cataclysmic flooding that has killed more than 500 people. “I hadn’t planned to come out tonight because

there’s been so much loss and so much grief,” Sahattaya, 45, said Thursday as the Southeast Asian kingdom celebrated Loy Krathong, a full-moon festival held every year when the rainy season comes to an end. “But this is a chance to let our misery float away.” Thais believe the candlelit boats launched during the Loy Krathong holiday can carry misfortune away with them, allowing life to begin anew. But this year the tradition, begun hundreds of years ago to pay tribute to water itself, has taken on a profound new irony.

Egypt closes Great Pyramid after rumors of rituals

Cairo, november 11 (aP): Egypt's antiquities authority closed the largest of the Giza pyramids Friday following rumors that groups would try to hold spiritual ceremonies on the site at 11:11 A.M. on Nov. 11, 2011. The authority's head Mustafa Amin said in a statement Friday that the pyramid of Khufu, also known as Cheops, would be closed to visitors until Saturday morning for "necessary maintenance." The closure follows a string of unconfirmed reports in local media that unidentified groups would try to hold "Jewish" or "Masonic" rites on the site to take advantage of mysterious powers coming from the pyramid on the rare date. Amin called all reports of planned ceremonies at the site "completely lacking in truth." The complex's director, Ali al-Asfar, said Friday that an Egyptian company requested permission last month to hold an event called "hug the pyramid," in which 120 people would join hands around the ancient burial structure. The authority declined

the request a week ago, al-Asfar said, but that did not stop concerned Egyptians from starting internet campaigns to prevent the event from taking place. "It has been a big cause now on Facebook and Twitter for many people to write about," al-Asfar said. The closure was unrelated to the rumors, he said, adding that the pyramid needed maintenance after the large number of visitors during the Muslim Eid alAdha holiday last week. The rest of the complex, which includes two other large pyramids, numerous tombs and the Sphinx, remained open Friday, though security appeared to be heavier than usual. Dozens of police officers and soldiers were posted throughout the complex. Some patrolled on camelback. One soldier stood next to his machine gun near a souvenir shop selling miniature pyramids. Speaking by phone from the pyramids after 11:11 had passed, al-Asfar said he'd seen nothing out of the ordinary. "Everything is normal," he said.

Floodwaters born from months of intense monsoon rains have swept the country, engulfing whole cities in one of the worst natural disasters in modern Thai history. In the last few weeks, areas of outer Bangkok have also been submerged, forcing residents to flee neighbourhoods where the best way to get around now is on boats made from anything that can float plastic foam, empty water bottles, bamboo poles. The threat is not yet over, and the Tourism Authority of Thailand responded by cancelling all official Loy Krathong celebrations in the capital this year. The Chao Phraya River normally filled with tens of thousands of floating lanterns during the holiday was dark and mostly empty Thursday night. The Bangkok Metropolitan Authority had urged people not to float krathongs on the river or in any flooded zones. Officials were worried they could trigger fires in abandoned homes or clog drains and canals critical to helping ease the massive pools of runoff bearing down on the metropolis of 9 million people.

HonoLuLu, november 11 (reuters): With the United States facing a multipronged challenge from China, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton declared Thursday that the 21st century will be "America's Pacific century" and said the region's problems require U.S. leadership. While stressing that the Obama administration will seek improved ties with China, Clinton used a speech ahead of an AsiaPacific summit here to dissuade Beijing and others from thinking the United States is ceding its traditional role in the Pacific. "There are challenges facing the Asia-Pacific right now that demand America's leadership, from ensuring freedom of navigation in the South China Sea to countering North Korea's provocations and proliferation activities to promoting balanced and inclusive economic growth," she said. Clinton's remarks, in a speech at the East-West Center, were part of a campaign by President Barack Obama to "pivot" U.S. foreign policy to focus more intensely on Asia after a decade of war in

Iraq and Afghanistan. "It is becoming increasingly clear that, in the 21st century, the world's strategic and economic center of gravity will be the Asia-Pacific, from the Indian subcontinent to western shores of the Americas," she said. "One of the most important tasks of American statecraft over the next decade will be to lock in a substantially increased investment -- diplomatic, economic, strategic, and otherwise -- in this region," Clinton told students and scholars at the East-West Center, a Honolulu think tank. While saying China and the United States needed to cooperate to stimulate global economic growth, Clinton delivered criticisms of Beijing's human rights policies that were certain to anger China's leaders. "We are alarmed by recent incidents in Tibet of young people lighting themselves on fire in desperate acts of protest, as well as the continued house arrest of the Chinese lawyer Chen Guangcheng," Clinton said, referring to recent cases in China. At least nine people have set fire to themselves in Tibetan parts of China in

recent months in protests against Chinese rule. Protests over the long detention of blind legal activist Chen has led to beatings of dozens of activists. Clinton said Washington aimed to forge in the Asia-Pacific region in this century a network similar to the transatlantic network of institutions and relationships that the United States and its allies in Europe built in the 20th century. "Today, there is a need for a more dynamic and durable transpacific system -- a more mature security and

economic architecture that will promote security, prosperity, and universal values; resolve differences among nations; foster trust and accountability; and encourage effective cooperation on the scale that today's challenges demand," she said. While bolstering security and political ties, the United States would make economic issues "front and center" in relationships in the region, pushing to open markets for trade and investment, Clinton said. "To accomplish these goals, we must create a rules-based order -- one that is open, free, transparent, and fair," she said. While insisting the United States was not trying to "constrain" China, Clinton sent a message to regional allies that Washington would be a counterbalance to Beijing's economic and military clout and would demand it play by trade rules. "U.S. firms want fair opportunities to export to China's markets and a level playing field for competition," she said in a speech shortly after Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived. Chinese firms want to be able to buy more hightech products from the

United States, make more investments here, and be accorded the same terms of access that market economies enjoy," she said. Clinton said the United States and China needed to cooperate to ensure "strong, sustained, and balanced future global growth" and to improve opportunities for the two countries' businesses to compete in each other's markets. "We are working with China to end unfair discrimination against U.S. and other foreign companies or against their innovative technologies, remove competitiondistorting preferences, allow its currency to appreciate more rapidly, and end measures that disadvantage or pirate foreign intellectual property," she said. Clinton later met Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi for talks on global and bilateral issues. A senior State Department official said China recognized a U.S. role in the region. "We are a fact on the ground in the Asia-Pacific region and I think China recognizes that and seeks to work with us," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Starving African baby has now fully recovered London, november 11 (daiLymaiL): As Minhaj Gedi Farah lay silently on a hospital bed three months ago, even his mother had given up hope that the skeletal Somali baby would live. But weeks of intensive feeding, though, have transformed him into a chubby-cheeked boy who crawls. He is one of several stories highlighted in an annual New York fundraising event held by the aid group International Rescue Committee, which helped nurse Minhaj back to health. At seven-months-old Minhaj was admitted to the International Rescue Committee’s hospital in the Dadaab refugee complex in July Minhaj’s emaciated little body was shown in media throughout the world and came to signify the plight of thousands of refugee children fleeing faminedevastated Somalia. He weighed just 3.1 kilograms (6.83 pounds) and was not only suffering from malnourishment but was severely anemic. It was touch and go as to whether the baby would survive -- his family had given up hope. After three life-saving blood transfusions and

intensive feeding with Plumpy’nut, a vitamin-enriched peanut paste, Minhaj reached 4.1kgs (9.03 pounds) and was released from the hospital and treated for tuberculosis in an IRC outpatient program. Today, three months after he was released, Minhaj is unrecognizable. 'His mother never thought he would recover. Every member of his family is happy,' said Sirat Amin, a nurse-nutritionist with the International Rescue Committee who has been monitoring Minhaj's progress. 'He can

sit without being supported, he can have Plumpynut on his own. He's crawling.' His mother, Assiyah Dagane Osman, recently brought the plump-cheeked baby back to the hospital’s malnutrition unit to visit the IRC doctors and nurses who had saved his life. She was overjoyed and extremely grateful, 'I am very happy with the treatment he received. He is doing very well.' AsDr.HumphreyMusyo-

ka and head nurse-nutritionist Sirat Amin examined him, Minhaj giggled and laughed, clearly enjoying all the attention he was receiving. At nearly 8 kilograms (17.64 pounds), Minhaj’s weight was almost normal for a little boy his age. 'We can’t express how we felt when we saw him again,” Sirat said. “We saw a completely different child.' Famine has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of

Somali children this year, but the U.N. said despite restrictions by Islamist insurgents, heavy rains and fighting, aid agencies are expanding their reach. Food aid is now getting to 2.2 million of the 4 million Somalis who need it, the U.N. said. The U.N. Children's Fund said around 168,0000 acutely malnourished children under the age of 5 could die within weeks. They are concerned about infectious diseases like measles, cholera and malaria, particularly in the dirty and overcrowded

camps in the capital of Mogadishu. 'The famine is not over ... Children are dying on a daily basis,' said Hannan Sulieman, UNICEF's deputy representative for the Somalia mission. 'Malnutrition has been way above emergency levels for over 10 years.' She said that her organization was planning to maintain current levels of aid until August or September next year, when Somalia would have had a long and a short rain harvest. The famine is the worst emergency to hit Somalia for a generation. The U.N. has appealed for $1 billion and has got $779 million so far. But aid still doesn't reach many of the starving. Islamist militiasbattlingtheweakU.N.backed government have forbidden many aid agencies to operate in their territory, exacerbating the effects of a severe drought. So even after their parents have struggled through the mud, have made it past the militias and have staggered into the hospital, it is still too late for many, said Amin. 'I'm coping with it but sometimes it's heartbreaking. People are suffering. Sometimes they die in front of you.'

NSFs should come under RTI: Maken

NEW DELHi, NovEmbEr 11 (AgENciES): As sports minister Ajay Maken sets out to getting the revised National Sports Development Bill tabled in the winter session of parliament, the biggest opposition is once again going to come from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). BCCI, who have refused to come under the purview of Right To Information (RTI) Act, has been vocal about its objection to the B. Board officials feel that the Bill will try to 'destroy the autonomy' of the board and 'dilute the rights of its members'. However, Maken believes that transparency in the working of national sports federations (NSF) can only be achieved by bringing them under the RTI Act. "All NSFs, including the BCCI, should come under RTI Act; that is what we have provided in the revised Bill. Application of RTI will bring transparency in running of sports in the country," Maken told the media on the sidelines of a function on Thursday. BCCI, believed to be the most professional sports body in the country, has taken a belligerent stand. However, the sports ministry is not prepared to back down. "It's public money it (BCCI) is getting and private companies should not benefit out of that. It's the money of fans and sports lovers and should be used transparently," he said, referring to several allegations of tax violations in the Indian Premier League. The minister's bid received support from various sports icons on the day as well. Former India captain and all-rounder Kapil Dev said that if BCCI has nothing to hide it shouldn't be afraid to come under the RTI Act. "Nobody is above the government or the law of the land. It is another matter that the bill may hurt some people personally. It is just a question of accountability. If you are not doing anything wrong you should not be scared," Dev told TOI. 2004 Olympics silver medalist Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore asked the cricket board to come forth with specific objections to the provisions in the bill.

Sparkling Tiger back on top in Sydney

SYDNEY, NovEmbEr 11 (AP): Tiger Woods walked off golf course to see his name atop the leaderboard Friday in the Australian Open. Even more pleasing to him was the way he got there. With control of his shots and comfortable over the putter, Woods put together his best back-toback rounds of the year with a 5-under 67 that gave him a one-shot lead among the early starters in the second round. If it holds up at the end of the day, it would be his first time in the lead after any round since the third day of the Chevron World Challenge last year, and the first time against a full field since his last win two years ago in the Australian Masters. Woods was tied for the firstround lead at The Barclays last year. "I really played well," Woods said. "Even though I shot 5 under, it felt it could have been 8 or 9 deep." He was at 9-under 135, one shot clear of a familiar name in these parts, and to Woods. Peter O'Malley is a member at The Lakes and birdied his last two holes for a 66. O'Malley is memorable to some golf fans in the United States as the No. 64 seed who beat Woods in the opening round of the Match Play Championship at La Costa in 2002. Jason Day, who played alongside Woods, managed to limit the damage from a few wayward shots and had a 68 to finish two behind. Jarrod Lyle, the 18-hole leader, was among those who played in the afternoon. Robert Allenby, who has played with Woods many times over the years, saw a game that was starting to look vaguely familiar. "Probably in the last six months, that's the best I've seen him play," Allenby said. "I've seen him at his

Woods finally gets endorsement for bag

AvENTUrA, NovEmbEr 11 (AFP): Tiger Woods, winless in nearly two years after an infamous sex scandal, announced the signing of a new endorsement deal on Thursday that will put a corporate logo back on his golf bag. Fuse Science Incorporated, a Florida sports nutrition company, paid the former World No. 1 an undisclosed sum for an endorsement deal that makes Woods the primary sports spokesman for their products. "Beyond sports, this technology applies in so many ways," Woods said. "The long-term potential is significant. To me, that's something much bigger than golf." Woods, a 14-time

major champion chasing the record 18 majors won by Jack Nicklaus, was a recordsetting product pitchman but lost most of his sponsor deals after revelations of a secret sex life in 2009 led to his divorce from Swedish model Elin Nordegren and shattered his iconic image. Golf bags used by Woods have carried the logo of his charity foundation for the past two years since AT&T dropped him in the wake of the sex scandal. Fuse Science will debut on Woods' bag in next month's Chevron World Challenge, an event hosted by Woods that benefits his charity foundation. Woods, who has not won since the 2009 Australian Masters in

Melbourne, is playing at this week's Australian Open and will play for the Americans in next week's Presidents Cup in Melbourne. Woods, who has slid to 58th in the world rankings, said he expects the Fuse Science products to help him with nutrition, vitamins and energy as he tries to recapture the form that made him the most dominant golfer in the world. "When I learned about Fuse Science's groundbreaking technology I immediately understood that this will be a game-changer in how we live our lives every day," Woods said. "We will improve energy, nutrition and medication delivery in several

global categories, and we will enhance every athlete's ability to perform at their natural best. "This company is laying the foundation for some very significant things and after personally talking to them, I wanted to be Powered by Fuse." Brian Tuffin, president and chief operating officer of Fuse Science, said he expects the deal with Woods to bring global reach to the firm's nutritional science. "Our partnership with the world's best is an enabler to have a worldwide impact sooner than later," Tuffin said. "Tiger recognizes the significance of the journey we're on as a company and wants to be part of our growth."

absolute best ... that was a different human being. He's on his way back, that's for sure. "I think where he is right now is good enough to win. I think you'll find if he keeps going the way he is going, he'll win over the weekend." Woods has hit plenty of crisp shots, but if there was one that showed an increasing confidence in his swing, it came toward the end of the round on the par-5 eighth. He was in the middle of the fairway, 280 yards from the hole and facing a 15 mph wind. The shot was pure, a bullet with the slightest fade to skirt a bunker and roll onto the green. "I hit that good," Woods said. "It was a slightly hanging lie and I had to start it at the bunker and just hammer it. It slid about 3 yards. That was the best shot I've hit the last couple of days." Woods still didn't take advantage of the all the par 5s, failing to make birdie on No. 11 and No. 17, and having to settle for one when he missed a 10-foot eagle putt on the 14th. And he finally made a bogey on the 30th hole of this tournament with a drive into a dune, and an approach that left him a bad angle to the green. He followed, however, with a 25foot birdie putt on No. 4 that broke some 6 inches at the end and caused Woods to let out a little emotion, tapping his fist toward the ground. His only other mistake was a stinger 3-iron into the wind on the sixth that turned just enough to catch the sand amid more dunes. A large crowd that packed into the knolls and dunes became louder the longer Woods stayed atop the leaderboard, and even some of the tournament officials appeared to get wrapped up in the day.

mUmbAi, NovEmbEr 11 (PTi): India, with fivetime world champion M C Mary Kom in their ranks, stand a good chance of winning a medal in women's boxing which makes its debut at the London Olympic Games next year, said International Boxing Association (AIBA) president Ching-Kuo Wu. "India has very good boxers with (good) record. I am sure we would have good boxers representing India. The five time world championship winner Mary Kom is a legend and everybody is saying she has a very good chance of winning at the Olympics," he said on Thursday. Wu, in the country to witness the World Series Boxing, said that the demand for women's boxing is quite high and people are excited to see women boxers competing at the Olympics for the first time. "For London Olympics women's boxing matches, the tickets are completely sold out. Everybody is looking forward to see women boxing in Olympics," he said. He further said that the AIBA will move into professional boxing space from the current semi-professional category in order to give the pugilists more career chances. "In 2013 we should have professional boxing that is from amateur to professional. Professional is inevitable. To create an opportunity for boxers to further their career, we must provide them with a chance to compete in professional boxing. It will be launched in spring of 2013," he added. Explaining the details of the new format, he said, "There will be International, continental and national categories but boxers have to be of top ranking and only the top 20 will go to the international level. The next 30 will be placed in continental and after 50, they will be in national. They will receive regular salary." "They can concentrate on sport without worrying about their livelihood. That is how we will create professional boxing. Also when Olympic Games are there, they can return to Olympics. So we will open the opportunities to boxers to further develop their game." Ranking India in the top four countries in boxing in Asia, he said, "I think India always is an important country. It can develop boxing very well. India has proved in the last three years and the standard of boxing has come up quickly, obviously because of a big population. I would like to see boxing getting developed further in India. Good boxers can be selected with the WSB (World Series Boxing) launch with the help of Indian boxing federation and the franchisees." Wu, who is also the chairman of World Series Boxing, hailed the importance of this AIBA initiative and said, "WSB is very important. WSB is a team competition with professional rules. The end of first season was very successful and will start the next season with new team and fresh franchise. WSB has a very important role to play and this is just the beginning."

Why Sachin Tendulkar has not scored 100th ton yet?

mUmb Ai, NovEmbEr 11 (DNA): What do the likes of Frank Woolley, Bret Sutcliffe, Vijay Merchant and Geoff Boycott have in common? They scored centuries prolifically when their prime years were way behind them. Interestingly, each of them had a Test hundred when they were past 40 — an age when your skills are meant to be on the wane. There’s a more fascinating piece of statistics. Graham Gooch retired at 41, and scored 12 Test hundreds after he was past 35. India’s erstwhile coach Gary Kirsten had five threefigure knocks during this period. By that token, what do we expect from the un-

finished phase of Sachin Tendulkar’s career? Yet, India are losing sleep over the hundred that’s taking a bit of time. He’s been nearly there on three occasions. The 85 against Pakistan in the World Cup, 91 against England at the Oval and now the 76 at Kotla. The journey from 75 to 100 is excruciating if we factor in the defensive fields, a batsman’s own unease and the mental reserves burned up. Tendulkar’s case study is particularly interesting. At 37, how arduous it is to put up with the strain of getting the last 25 runs? To understand a Tendulkar Test innings in its totality, it’s essential to comprehend the way he prepares himself.

It’s said, no Indian cricketer has access to his inner chamber when he’s waiting to bat. We are told the process starts with him first getting into an intense visual zone. Before he takes guard, the innings has already been graphed in his mind. He plays his first ball long before he walks into the middle. Assessing the conditions, playing each ball visually, deciding the right back-lift against the wind — it’s a complex sphere. So, by the time he’s into his 80s or 90s, how much of mental energy has he consumed? Given his conversion rate of hundreds in 2010, the theory seems drivel. Last year (when he

was 36), he had 12 scores of 50-plus, converting seven of them into hundreds. And there’s been a refreshing change in the way he constructs his innings these days: playing a shade conservatively in the 70s and 80s but opening up his shoulders in the 90s. Remember how he stepped out to Paul Harris to loft him over long-off at Centurion when he was within an ace of his 50th Test ton. It was different at the Oval, where he made a laboured 91 with the Test hinging on his presence, and Kotla where he turned down two leg-byes quite uncharacteristically. Yes, there’s a limit to which the mind can take.

Dr BP Bam, noted sports psychologist, says, “Factors such as match situation and conditions often have a cumulative effect on a batsman. As you approach a landmark, it becomes more difficult. At times, the anticipation of a milestone makes you lose focus. How you’re going to get that all-important run, or how you will celebrate, things like that. Somehow you then become more defensive and are desperate not to lose your wicket. You should know when to switch on and switch off. “There are expectations too when you’re on the verge of an extraordinary record. All these factors do pile up in your

mind,” Bam adds, referring to his impending hundredth hundred which has become a national obsession. Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar, however, believes the story would have been different had India played on better surfaces. “Such wickets assist neither batsmen nor bowlers,” he says. Vengsarkar agrees, though, that it’s a lot different when you’re 27. “Both the physical and mental aspect of batting becomes demanding as you grow older. Your reflexes and eyesight are not the same. But Sachin and Sir Donald Bradman are exceptions. It’s a matter of time before he gets there.”

Chelsy says no to Harry kiss and tell Saifeena, Bollywood’s most awaited wedding confirmed! F

or seven years, their relationship was marked by passion and tantrums, but it ended without the wedding many had longed for. Indeed, almost to the day his brother was exchanging his marriage vows, Prince Harry was reconciling himself to life without his firecracker girlfriend Chelsy Davy. But while the romance may have gone out of their relationship, the loyalty hasn’t. Chelsy has turned down a big-money offer to write a kiss-andtell book about her royal love match. And Harry, is reported to be ‘very relieved’. The story begins in the aftermath of their breakup, which followed Prince William’s marriage to Kate Middleton in April. It was then, as she surveyed the extraordinary spectacle at Westminster Abbey, that Zimbabwe-born Chelsy decided their romance was doomed. According to friends, she realised that the life Kate was embarking on as Duchess of Cambridge was not for her. And, remarkably, when she confided in Harry, the Prince accepted her argument and agreed she should call time on their relationship. While Chelsy was initially taken aback — she expected him to talk her out of it, says a friend — she was quietly pleased. In the months since the split, the blonde, who has recently begun work as a trainee solicitor with City law firm Allen & Overy, has been offered a ‘phenomenal’ sum to spill the beans. But she has told friends that she will ‘never, ever’ speak about her romance with Harry. Not only has she no need of the money — her father is a multi-millionaire — but Chelsy still feels an overwhelming loyalty to her former boyfriend, despite the fact that both have been linked roman-

tically with other partners. Chelsy was Harry’s first love and given unprecedented access to his life in the heart of the Royal Family. ‘Her story would be sensational, but she has vowed never to sell it. She just isn’t that kind of girl,’ said a well-placed source. Since their split, Chelsy has been linked with Harry’s pal, property developer Taylor McWilliams, and Jamie Richards, the son of Aston Martin boss David Richards, while Harry briefly romanced underwear model Florence Brudenell-Bruce.

ndia’s very own Brangelina aka Saifeena, who are Bollywood’s most popular couple, have always denied talks about their marriage plans. Recently, Saif confirmed that his wedding with Kareena is on the cards next. According to speculations, the two were planning to marry in 2012, soon after the release of Saif’s own production ‘Agent Vinod’ releases. But due to the unfortunate demise of Saif’s father, Tiger Pataudi and delay in their film, Saifeena marriage was postponed. Now the good news is, Saif Ali Khan, who had not spoken about his wedding with Bebo all this while has himself announced that the two are tying the knot early next year. He has confirmed they will be married within the first quarter of 2012. Not just Saif but his mother veteran actress Sharmila Tagore has also declared that her son is all set to marry the Kapoor girl “very soon”. Saif spoke to media and confirmed, "Kareena and I will definitely get married by early next year. We plan to get married in February 2012 after ‘Agent Vinod’ releases, but if the film`s release gets delayed we will still get married by March. We won`t postpone the marriage beyond that anymore." He added, "Kareena

is a wonderful girl and we are extremely compatible. My family and she have always got along well. We share the same values in life, love each other completely and I want

to spend more time with her. I am looking forward to the marriage now." So here comes the most anticipated wedding of Bollywood and yes we are excited!

ocker Gene Simmons shared the secrets of his success with students in London on Thursday night at a surprise economics lecture. The Kiss singer held a special workshop, entitled Dream Big with Gene Simmons, at the prestigious London Business School and he handed out commerce tips and advice. Simmons has also written a column for Britain's The Sun, addressing the current global economic crisis - and the star reveals how he would fix the problems. He writes, "The mess is our fault corporations have no responsibility. Capitalism is the best thing that ever happened to human beings. The welfare state sounds wonderful but it doesn't work. Governments hand out more money than they have to support welfare and they land in debt. Then they have to borrow money... that's bad business. "

ippa Middleton is said to have split from her long term boyfriend ex-cricketer Alex Loudon. Friends said the 27-yearold Royal bridesmaid and her 31-year-old beau finally called time on their threeyear relationship after a string of arguments. A source told The Sun that Pippa, whose profile sky-rocketed after the Royal Wedding, had sought refuge with her sister after the split. The unnamed friend told the paper: 'Pippa tried to get over the split by spending last weekend with Wills and Kate at Balmoral. During the couple's brief separation Pippa was spotted in the company of her former boyfriend and close friend, George Percy in Madrid, before reconciling with Loudon. But friends said this time their separation is for good after a series of rows, one which erupted at an acquaintance's wedding. It is believed Loudon, a city banker, had found it difficult to deal with Pippa's sudden fame as a sex symbol. While other friends revealed their relationship started crumbling after the Royal Wedding in April. A source told the tabloid: 'It was said after the wedding that Alex was jealous of Pippa flirting with Prince Harry. But the truth is she and Harry are just mates.' In the weeks after her

sister got married Pippa's derrière became so popular it was even given its own Facebook page and social networking site Twitter went crazy with people calling the party planner 'Her Royal Hotness', a nickname first used in Royal Wedding reports. Pippa Middleton was contacted for a comment but she was unavailable.

oncerns over her health were raised after she shed weight in the wake of allegations her husband had cheated on her. But it appears Demi Moore is in need of an energy boost after Ashton Kutcher has found himself embroiled in yet another scandal. The actress, 48, was seen clutching an energy drink and appeared extremely tense as she stepped out in Beverly Hills today. Demi had covered her thin frame in a zigzag print knit cardigan and a pair of brown trousers which hung loosely around her slim legs. It’s no surprise the star looked under strain after her husband of six years stepped into the middle of a media storm following an ill-advised late night tweet.

The Two and a Half Men star tweeted a remark regarding football team coach Joe Paterno, who has been embroiled in a child sexual abuse scandal. And following the storm of protest surrounding his apparent support of the controversial football coach he today handed over the control of his account to his management team. Scores of Twitter users blasted the 33-year-old actor for his unguarded remarks. On a long explanatory post on his blog, he wrote: 'Up until today I have posted virtually every one of my tweets on my own, but clearly the platform has become too big to be managed by a single individual. 'While I will continue to express

myself through @Aplusk I'm going to turn the management of the feed over to my team at Katalyst Media to ensure the quality of it's content.' He went on to explain that he did not have the full facts before posting the tweet about the sacking of Pennsylvania State University coach Joe Paterno. At about 12.30am this morning, he wrote on his official account: 'How do you fire Jo Pa? #insult #noclass as a hawkeye [the University of Iowa football team] fan I find it in poor taste.' Within minutes the term Jo Pa, a misspelt nickname of the legendary football coach, was trending on the social networking site as thousands of users ripped into the highly paid TV star. His comment came after the news that Paterno, Penn State head coach for 46 years, had been fired for allegedly covering up sexual abuse by the school's former football defence coordinator Jerry Sandusky. Ashton’s timing of his remarks brought him back in the public spotlight for the wrong reasons and comes in the wake of a sex scandal after he was accused of cheating on Demi over the weekend of their wedding anniversary. Twenty-two year old Sara Leal claimed she had bedded the actor after spending a night partying in his hot tub with her friends. His wife, actress Demi, has decided to stand by her husband amid the allegations though the strain of recent weeks has clearly taken its toll on her. Commentators have noted that she has lost considerable weight and has appears to have aged considerably following the claims.

SPORTS LONDON, NOvember 11 (AFP): Frank Lampard will captain England in their friendly international with Spain this weekend, manager Fabio Capello confirmed on Friday. Chelsea midfielder Lampard, 33, will don the armband after Capello opted to rest skipper John Terry from the starting line-up for Saturday's sell-out game at Wembley. It marks a sharp turnaround in fortunes for Lampard, who was dropped from England's recent games against Bulgaria and Montenegro, fuelling speculation his 89-cap international career was drawing to a close. However Lampard became the logical

second day, on which 23 wickets fell. After a quiet first hour in which they added 31, getting accustomed to the conditions, Amla and Smith demolished the Australia attack. Amla played some wonderful strokes, straight drives, cover drives and flicks off the pads, proving that there was nothing in the pitch that could not be handled by good technique. He brought up his century, his first against Australia, with a cut for four off Mitchell Johnson from his 126th delivery and the crowd - by that stage anticipating a South Africa victory any moment - erupted. Amla had been dropped twice by the Australians, including off the last ball of the second day, and he made them pay for those errors. The 195-run partnership ended when Amla, on 112, slashed at Mitchell Johnson and was caught at gully by Michael Clarke with 14 runs still needed for victory. Kallis and Smith pushed them over the line with ease. Smith was equally masterful, after a couple of lucky edges early in the day. He brutalised Shane Watson during an over that cost 13, smashing a cut for four and walking at the bowler

to drive another boundary. His hundred came up with the run that levelled the scores, a single pushed past mid-off from his 138th delivery. The South Africans batted superbly but Australia's bowlers were disappointing. Johnson collected the late wicket of Amla and in doing so avoided the second wicketless Test of his career, but he found no swing and was rarely threatening. Harris did not bowl terribly but was costly, while Peter Siddle tried hard. But they never looked like taking nine wickets under sunny skies. Australia had their chance to break into the middle order when in the third over of the day, Amla, on 30, edged Harris to first slip, where Watson moved to his left and put down a catch he should have taken. It was the last realistic opportunity Australia had, until the match was gone. A desperate use of the referral system confirmed that an lbw appeal from Harris to Amla was rightly denied by the umpire Billy Doctrove, the ball sailing well down the leg side, and it was just another example of the frayed mindset the Australians were experiencing after their humiliating day on Thursday.

choice for Capello after his decision to omit Terry followed the absence through injury of Steven Gerrard and the out-of-form Rio Ferdinand. Capello was adamant that Terry, who is at the centre of police and FA investigations into alleged racism, remained his permanent captain and would play against Sweden next week. PArIs, NOvember 11 (AFP): Top seed Novak Djokovic on Friday pulled out of the ATP Paris Masters, in which he was due to play Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals, because of a shoulder injury. The Serb world number one said his shoulder had worsened after his 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over compatriot Viktor Troicki on Thursday. "Sadly I have to inform you that I have withdrawn from the further tournament," Djokovic announced on his official website. "I have pushed myself to the limit by playing, and after the match yesterday my shoulder got worse. "For this reason, I have to put my health first and withdraw even though my urges as a professional player are making me want to play until the last drop of energy.

"I am very sorry for all of you who bought tickets and wanted to come and watch me play. My season has been long and tiring, I played all of my matches at my highest level, and now my body is aching for recovery. Hoping for your understanding and support." Djokovic, who has notched up 10 titles this year including successes at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open, on Wednesday laughed off suggestions that he only turned up for the Paris Masters in order to avoid missing out on a $1.6 million windfall. Djokovic's participation was cast into doubt by his shoulder injury and, having already pulled out of last month's Shanghai Masters, another withdrawal would have cost him his lucrative share of the ATP bonus pool.

Asked whether he had spoken to Hamilton since India, Massa told reporters at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix that there had been no conversation and he was still clearly aggrieved at getting the drive-through penalty. It followed a row earlier this week over an FA request for England's players to be allowed to wear commemorative red poppies on their shirts for Saturday's prestige friendly against Spain at Wembley. World governing body FIFA initially refused the request on the grounds that it could open the door to similar initiatives from other countries. After protests from the British government and expression of dismay from Britain's royal heir Prince William, FIFA eventually agreed a compromise wear players are allowed to wear poppies on black armbands.

AbU DHAbI, NOvember 11 (reUters): Ferrari's Felipe Massa and McLaren's Lewis Hamilton kept their Formula One feud simmering on Thursday as bookmakers offered odds on them colliding again in Abu Dhabi this weekend. Button tops first practice in Abu Dhabi

LONDON, NOvember 11 (AgeNCIes): Jenson Button finished the first practice session of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on top as McLaren and Red Bull resumed their usual position at the sharp end of the timing sheets. Button was 0.126s faster than Red Bull's Mark Webber with McLaren's Lewis Hamilton third fastest, just 0.014s further adrift. Sebastian Vettel was fourth fastest, 0.492s off Button, but came across traffic in the final sector of his fastest lap. However, the times should be treated with caution as all the fastest lap times were set on a development tyre, brought to Abu Dhabi this weekend so that Pirelli can gather data for next year. The drivers also used the medium tyre, which will be used this weekend, but tended to be over a second slower on the harder rubber. Ferrari's Fernando Alonso left his run on the development tyres to the last few minutes after a long, and at times torturous, run on the mediums. He finished the session within touching distance of Vettel and 0.538s off Button, but at one stage spent more time off the track than on it. Ferrari is using the Friday practice sessions to focus on its development parts for 2012, but clearly there was some sort of problem as both drivers struggled to

Tons from Amla & Smith lead SA to incredible win

CAPe tOWN, NOvember 11 (AgeNCIes): Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla both struck centuries that completed South Africa's humiliation of Australia on the third day at Newlands, where they cruised to victory by eight wickets. If Australia thought their Cape Town experience could not get any worse after they were dismissed for 47 on the second afternoon, they were badly mistaken, with Smith and Amla adding to the hurt for the visitors. The winning runs came when Smith, who finished unbeaten on 101, clipped Peter Siddle through midwicket and South African fans jumped to their feet to celebrate a famous victory. This was a team that on the second day had been bowled out for 96. In doing so, South Africa became just the second team in 60 years to win a Test having been bowled out for less than 100 in their first innings; the only other occasion in the modern era was New Zealand's success against India in Wellington in 2002. They also completed the second-highest chase in a Newlands Test. But it was the way they batted on the third morning that highlighted the ridiculous nature of the

British bookmakers saw a commercial opportunity. William Hill were taking bets at 14-1 on a seventh coming together at the Yas Marina circuit while Ladbrokes offered a less generous 5-1.

Alonso eventually resorted to skipping the turn eight and nine chicane completely so that he did not have to deal with the snappy rear end under braking. Team-mate Felipe Massa experienced similar problems and was over 0.4s off the pace of Alonso by the end of the session in sixth. Adrian Sutil maintained his strong form from the Indian Grand Prix by setting the seventh fastest time and getting within a tenth of Massa's best. Mercedes' Nico Rosberg was a further 0.790s slower than the Force India in eighth, just ahead of Sutil's team-mate Paul di Resta who rounded off a solid first session for the Indian team. Jaime Alguersuari was tenth overall in the Toro Rosso, 2.114s off Button's pace. It was also a good morning for new boys Jean-Eric Vergne and Romain Grosjean, who lined up 11th and 12th in the Toro Rosso and Renault respectively. Both were subbing in for the morning and had very productive sessions, with Vergne completing 26 laps and Grosjean 29. Grosjean also outperformed his teammate Vitaly Petrov, although it should be noted that the Russian completed just 13 laps before what looked like an engine problem at the end of the session.
