Dimapur, November 12 (mexN): The annual national primary education survey conducted in Phek district of Nagaland by Annual Survey Education Report (ASER), a NGO based in Delhi working on remedial primary education in rural India, has reaffirmed the dismal state of affairs in the State’s Education sector. trict and visited 30 government schools. Some schools were not part of targeted survey but ASER has included them to get a wider perspective. The survey shows that, out of the 30 schools visited, only 2 schools can be rated as “good,” 15 schools as “fair” and the rest, “deplorable.” To rate the schools, the following criteria were taken into account- building, playground, environment, infra-
structure, library (whether the school gets any magazine, newspaper, etc) community participation and students. ’ The survey also found that, with the exception of dropouts, 99% of children between the ages of 6 to 16 are school-going. Students reading and arithmetic skills were tested along with some bonus questions. 62% of Class 4 students didn’t know how to read simple sentences in
the form of story and 87% didn’t know arithmetic divisions. And while 47% of Class 5 students couldn’t read a story correctly, 70% couldn’t do arithmetic divisions. The survey also found that students in towns fared better than those in the villages, especially in the bonus arithmetic questions where the response was almost nil in villages. What students of Class 6 hardly managed in the villages, students of
Class 3 in the towns manages quite well. It also observed that students’ in private school fared better than those studying in government schools. The survey also included parents’ literacy. The highest literacy rate of 91% was found among parents in Thipizu. According to the survey, the common chronic problem that has been identified in all the schools is, “the shortages

The recent black day observed by citizens of Dimapur in protest against criminals threatening Naga society must be supported by all sections of Naga society, the MIP noted stated further. Dimapur, November 12 (mexN): Leader of opposition, Meghalaya state assembly, and youth NCP leader, Conrad Sangma, today expressed conviction that the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) will be the “alternative” to the NPF and Congress parties in Nagaland. “As political parties, both NPF and Congress have not been able to fulfill people’s expectations, and the people in Nagaland are looking forward to the NCP as an alternative party,” Conrad said in a press briefing held at NCP office, Dimapur. Conrad, the second son of NCP pioneer and former Lok Sabha Speaker, PA Sangma, also said that the party has already started the process of reinvigorating and organizing the Nagaland state NCP at differ-
ent levels to face the next assembly elections. “We are going to work very hard and NCP will give special emphasis to the youths, not only in the electoral aspects but also the organizational side too,” he said. On the recent pull-out of Nagaland state NCP from the DAN coalition, the NCP youth leader iterated that the NCP central leaders were aware and fully endorsed the decision taken by the Nagaland NCP. Conrad said the decision to withdraw from the DAN coalition was not an “easy one” but that the party was compelled to pull out from the DAN coalition as the major DAN party, the NPF, had never taken into confidence its coalition partners while formulating major policies or decisions. show up empty handed and deliver only mind boggling speeches,” the BJP in a press release issued by Vice President, K. Medom Angami stated. The BJP stated that Gandhi’s visit held high expectations for many Nagas but during his public address, Gandhi only criticized the NPF instead of focusing on the State’s economic crisis. “He started with his favourite songyouths join politics, students come and join politics,” the BJP stated. The BJP stated Gandhi
spoke at length about lacks of proper roads; people living below the poverty line; price rise and corruption, etc. In this regard, the BJP stated that there is no denying Nagas are facing all these problems owing to corruption. However, if Gandhi is aware about the plights of Nagas and that NPF has been misappropriating funds provided by the Centre, the BJP stated the Centre should constitute a fact-finding committee or send a central investigating agency to nab the culprits. Attacking the Congress
led UPA government, the BJP stated that the UPA is not determined to check corruption and neither is the NPF government in Nagaland. It stated that both are mocking the Naga public and branded them as “birds of a feather.” The BJP reminded the public that when NDA was in power, Nagaland was kept in a special category and all possible help was extended for all round development of the State. But the UPA government is faced with corruption charges which has become a routine.

Asst. professor’s excessive ‘leave’ anger students
Dimapur, November 12 (mexN): An assistant professor posted at Phek Govt College has within a span of three years, availed 248 days of earned leave (more than 100 days in excess) and is currently under 3 months leave. According to Phek Town Chakhesang Students Union (PTCSU), the assistant professor in question was transferred and posted at Phek Govt College in the year 2007 and is serving till date. Since then, has she has availed undue leave and abstains from duty under several pretexts while superior authorities remain a mute spectator, PTCSU stated. The PTCSU, in an open letter addressed to the Commissioner and Secretary for Higher Education and the Principal, Phek Government College stated that it has been compelled to bring to notice of the authorities the utter irresponsible and negligence of the “influential lecturer,” and the “favoritism and patronage showed by some higher authorities.” The letter appended by PTCSU Vice President, Shehai Rakho and General Secretary, Kudukhoto Tet-
seo stated that, in the year 2010, the assistant professor remained “absent without leave for 42 days.” A bona-fide government employee is entitled for 12 days of casual leave only. During 2010, the lecturer availed 22 days of casual leave besides the so called “quarantine leave” which is unheard of. Official records also shows that she has availed maternity leave for the 4th time, although one is entitled for only 2 such leave. This whole year, she has remained absent and when the college re-opened in July 2011, it was again learnt that, she was granted another commuted leave for three more months. “This is an obvious case of favoritism and partiality being shown to a particular employee in connivance with some higher authorities under their patronage,” PTCSU stated. The PTCSU has also expressed shock about the transfer of one lecturer, who in their opinion is “smart.” The Union sees this move to divert from the main issues concerning the college at present. The Union has requested the Commissioner and
Secretary to do “what is in the best interest of the students and public,” and to promptly revoke her transfer order being notified recently. PTCSU also charged the Principal of Phek Govt. College, who is the forwarding authority, not to “indiscriminately forward and approve the application without sparing thought of its negative ramification.” The PTCSU further warned the erring assistant professor not to mess with the careers of students adding that her “influential position does not give her license to bend established rules and precedents, to avail undue and excessive leave, at the cost of compromising the precious career and future of the students, and proper functioning of the College.” The PTCSU has stated that it is high time the concerned higher authority impose prompt exemplary and punitive measures against such erring personnel/authority; adding that in the case of failing to do, the Union will be compelled to pursue its own course of action in the interest of the students in particular and public at large.

No re-visiting petrol price hike: Pranab
berhamPore (Wb), November 12 (PTI): Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday said the two most vexed issues facing the nation are price rise in essential commodities and petro-products. It is not possible for the Centre to decrease the price of petro-products because huge subsidies are already being given to the oil companies for sale of fuel at controlled rates, Mukherjee told a Congress seminar here. Crude is being imported at a price many times more than at the time of the Budget, Mukherjee said. He said foreign oil firms were also increasing the prices of petro-products. State Governments, he said, cannot continue to rely on loans from the Centre and have to increase their own sources of revenue to tackle the situation. Mukherjee said that in West Bengal, the TrinamoolCongress Government was facing a financial crisis because the earlier Left Front regime had failed to generate revenue over 34 years of rule in spite of being told repeatedly to do so. He said he had earlier told the Left that calling bandhs when prices went up was no solution. Suggesting a way to tackle inflation in essential commodities, he said the PDS system should be strengthened. A strong PDS system will benefit 40 crore people and help arrest the price spiral, he said. Replying to a question on why Jute Corporation of India Ltd was not purchasing jute from growers, he said he would inquire into the matter after returning to Delhi.

Losami Village Council mourns The Losami Village Council is deeply pain over the untimely demise of its brother in law late Er N Zeliang JE PWD (R&B) Phek Division on November 8 at Naga Civil Hospital Kohima. It is immeasurable lost for Losami Village and the district to have lost a good personality and one of its family
Dismal report card of govt primary schools The village communities in order to mitigate this problem has been trying to make all ends meet sponsoring private tutors and subject teachers to salvage students’ career but in places where no such effort exist, students bear the brunt, the survey found. With communitisation of Education, the participation of communities has become pivotal towards efficient administration and where such healthy participation exists, schools fare better. The survey found that in places where communitisation efforts were good, the schools were running well. However, in places where participation of the community was less, the condition of schools was dismal. Some Village Education Committee heads hardly visit the school and resided mostly in towns, the survey found. Also under the SSA programme, every school is entitled to mandatory yearly grants of Rs. 15,000 for lower primary school and Rs.22, 000 for upper primary with lower primary attached (excluding TLM & midday meal funds) under maintenance and development grants. But the discrepancies found in its implementation are a matter of serious concern, the report stated. ASER has concluded that “many schools are reeling under pathetic condition with no electricity connection; proper desk and benches; worn out building and located in places not conducive to learning that just at the sight. The need of the hour now is redeployment of teachers from the excess areas to the shortage areas or appoint new one. But to let the schools thrive without teachers would not only be unfair but cruel. Those who are unwilling to go to their areas of posting should gracefully retire as there are enough qualified youth to take up the same as this profession is not only to earn livelihood but a yeoman service to render.” For further information & picture excerpt or feedbacks, log on to chakhesang.united@group.facebook.com

year 1992 by trading in shares at a premium across many segments. He and his associates diverted funds to the tune of about Rs 5,000 crore (Rs 50 billion) from the banks to stockbrokers between April 1991 to May 1992. He was later charged with 72 criminal offences.
Posted by Nishant Garg | The Noob Diary
or many years now, we all have witnessed huge political and financial scams/frauds in our country involving money which amounts to multi-million dollars. And these are just the ones which have been exposed, let’s not even get into those which are yet to be uncovered. With so much capital in hand, one can’t help but wonder would India still have been a developing country had this money been used on what it was actually meant to be spent on. Given below is the list of TOP 10 biggest scams which have plagued our country in the recent past.
8 – COBBLER SCAM In1995 another Scam of magnanimous proportions was exposed. Sohin Daya of Dawood Shoes, Rafique Tejani of Metro Shoes, and Kishore Signapurkar of Milano Shoes were arrested in this multi-crore shoes scam on the charges of availing loans of crores of rupees on behalf of fictitious leather co-operative societies and taking advantage of these through various schemes. Officials of various state banks were also charge sheeted.
1 – 2G SPECTRUM SCAM What can be said that hasn’t been said before, this is THE mother of all scams. The Supreme Court recently said the spectrum scam has put ‘all other scams to shame’. The incident saw former telecom minister A Raja being forced to resign after the CAG indicted him in the 2G spectrum scam that resulted in a loss of about 176,000 core to the national exchequer. The scandal revolves around the alleged irregularities in allotting wireless radio spectrum and licences by the telecom ministry to private operators — some of whom were ineligible. Licences were given and spectrum allocation was done at an extremely low price (2001 prices in the year 2008) leading to a gargantuan loss to the national coffers.
2 – COMMONWEALTH GAMES SCAM Yes, of course, how could the scamsters miss the much publicized and anticipated Common Wealth Games hosted by India in 2010. Even before the long awaited sporting bonanza could see the light of the day, the grand event was soaked in the allegations of corruption. Estimated to be involving money worth close to 35,000 crore, the scam included discrepancies like payment to non-existent parties, will-ful delays in execution of contracts, over-inflated price and bungling in purchase of equipment through tendering – and misappropriation of funds. The accused, former chairman of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, Suresh Kalmadi, was charged and jailed later by CBI in april 2011
9 – FODDER SCAM More commonly known as the “Chara Ghotala”, this scam was worth a whooping 900 core and involved the infamous and forever popular Bihar politician Lalu Prasad Yadav. The scam involved fabrication of “vast herds of fictitious livestock” for which fodder, medicine and animal husbandry equipment was supposedly procured.

Lakhs of bags of it. The stamp on the jute bags says "2010-2011." This batch of wheat is produced from a crop that's just three months old. It's rotting away. "This is the first time wheat has been stored here in the open. Earlier they stored it in a pucca plinth. Now there are more than 1.5 lakh bags out here," says the watchman, at Thol Storage in Haryana. The wheat should be stored at warehouses owned by the government. But year after year, the warehouses in Punjab and Haryana run out of room. There is no silver lining to this problem of excess, mainly because the government has persistently ignored it. This year, heavy rain and water logging mean that the grain is rotting faster than usual. The plastic sheets thrown carelessly around the bags of wheat are totemic of the sort of systematic carelessness that a desperately poor and hungry nation is cursed with. In March, NDTV travelled to warehouses scattered in Sirhind, Anandpur Sahib, Ludhiana, Sangrur. The stench rose Enough food to feed 100 sharp and thick from the grain rotting outmillion people rots away side. There were rats and snakes crawling Chandigarh: The wheat lies in the sun. among the grain. Embarrassed by the proDeepak Shenoy
s India immerses itself into removing corruption, it's important to understand what the past scams cost us. But talking in mere amounts isn't fruitful. After all, does 55,000 crore rupees sound bad? How much worse is it than a mere 50,000 crores? (Answer: 1,000 kilometers of highway worse, or the stretch from Bangalore to Mumbai) The biggest scam that unfortunately doesn't get classified as one is that food enough to feed 100 million people rots in government warehouses. For the rest, we have for you an infographic that puts the amounts in context, how much we could have done. For past scams we have adjusted the amount for inflation to reflect an equivalent in 2011 — the Rs. 5,000 crore Harshad Mehta Scam for instance is worth Rs. 15,000 cr. today. Here's all that we could have done with the money lost to some of the biggest scams in India.
3 - TELGI SCAM Abdul Karim Telgi, the name is still etched boldly in the memory of the whole of India. The con artist, who shook the entire nation with his mastered art of forgery in printing duplicate stamp papers. The scam spanned across 12 states and estimated to the amount of 20,000 crore plus. With support from numerous Government Departments this scam one of the first few which brought to light the with real ones” through Maytas acquisition shameful corrupt practices of the politicians failed, after which he decided to confess the crime. India’s fourth largest IT company lost and the beaurocrats alike. a staggering Rs 10,000 crore (Rs 100 billion) in market capitalisation as investors reacted sharply and dumped shares, pushing down the scrip by 78 per cent to Rs 39.95 on the Bombay Stock Exchange in a single day.
4 – SATYAM SCAM Satyam scam is the biggest fraud in the Indian corporate industry till date, amounting to 14,000 crore. The disgraced former chairman, Ramalinga Raju is accused of fudging the books of accounts for several years and inflating revenues and profit figures of Satyam. His efforts to fill the “fictitious assets
of Indian people. A lot of the IPL activity has been alleged to be unethical, unlawful and sometimes illegal. Politicians and others are said to be laundering black money via Mauritius and other tax havens which hide investors’ identities through shell companies and false names. There are suggestions that matches and bids for team franchises have been fixed, and that there have been bribes, tax evasion, illegal betting, and breaches of foreign investment rules. At the centre of the growth, and the controversy, was Lalit Modi, creator and chairman of the IPL and former vice president of the highly politicised Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
6 – BOFORS SCAM The Bofors scandal is known as the hallmark of Indian corruption. In the 1980s,the then PM Rajiv Gandhi and several others including a powerful NRI family named the Hindujas, were accused of receiving kickbacks from Bofors AB for winning a bid to supply India’s 155 mm field howitzer. The 5 – IPL SCAM Never before has a scam been enjoyed Swedish State Radio had broadcast a starand celebrated by such a massive proportion tling report about an undercover operation
fuse evidence of its lack of concern and initiative, the government has now floated tenders, looking for new warehouses both in Punjab and Haryana that can house an additional 70 lakh metric tons of wheat. For now, the facts are damning. Currently, in Punjab and Haryana, by official accounts, 100 lakh metric tons of grain has been stored in the open. According to an estimate, 10 per cent of this is rotting. That's enough to feed 100 million people for three months. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court made its stand clear to Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, stating that earlier this month, when it asked him to ensure excess grain is given to poor people, it wasn't offering a suggestion. Find a way to implement the order, the judges said. Mr Pawar told an angry Parliament hours later that he welcomed suggestions from them on how to distribute grain to poor families. A solution to distribute the grain - perhaps through ration shops - cannot come soon enough. In Madhya Pradesh, six out of every ten children suffer from diseases caused by hunger or malnutrition.
10 - HAWALA SCANDAL Yet another widely publicized bribery scandal which came out in 1996. It involved payments to the tune of $18 milion received by Country’s leading politicians through hawala brokers. The list of accused included the then leader of the opposition Lal Krishna Advani. The masses were left shocked as all the major political players were being accused of having accepted bribes and also alleged connections about payments being channelled to Hizbul Mujahideen militants in Kashmir.
CONCLUSION So this concludes the list of TOP 10 biggest Indian scams of all times. According to the (Source: sinlung) compilation, the total amount of money involved in various scams over the last 12 years carried out by Bofors, Sweden’s biggest arms alone, since 1992, is estimated to be over Rs 80 manufacturer, whereby $16 million were al- lakh crore (Rs 80 trillion) or $1.80 trillion! To many people abroad, India is seen senlegedly paid to members of PM Rajiv Gantimentally as Mahatma Gandhi’s country of dhi’s Congress. khadi cloth, good ethics, and care for the poor. To some it is an economic miracle and a future super power, while to others it is an unkind cruel place of caste, ethnic and rich-poor divisions and violence. Above all however, and not far below the surface, India is a maze of unethical, unlawful and illegal swindles that link most politicians, many bureaucrats, and a large number of businessmen and others. Do let us know your views and opinions about the above mentioned scams which have had a severe impact on or growth as a nation as well as image across the globe. Feel free to mention any other scam that could have been included in the list.

sPORts: A sPiRitUAL ReLY On GOD LABORAtORY
‘Watch a man play an hour’s time and you can tell who he is’. To bring change is not easy but a process that needs your extra efforts. Many leaders are too traditional to accept the tool of sports. The church cannot be confined and just being without proclaiming the gospel. What was useful before may not be applicable in today’s fast changing world. Its good to remember that only discipline people comes to church, but not the unbelievers, neither addicted nor alcoholic etc. In order to win those people we (the church) must go out to them, rather than waiting them to come by their own conviction. The gospel is to be made powerful by preaching to those in need so that, the power of gospel will bring them to church. The actual purpose of the gospel message is for them, who haven’t heard, who are in bondage of slavery (sin). The parable of Jesus in the gospel says, He left the 99 sheep’s and went back in search of one lost sheep. So, the most important is unsaved one. It doesn’t mean to neglect the rest, but the truth is that the rest are already safe and in the boundary of God’s love but the one’s not. As we respond to the commission of Jesus to reach unreached people by all means then, sport is the best tool to reach out to different types of people you have in your heart. Sport is a tremendous vehicle for the process of becoming like Christ (discipleship). Through sports and recreation it is possible to construct “A Life Laboratory” so that the “theory” espoused from the pulpit, the Sunday school class or the Bible study is practically applied or practiced. It is not enough to give intellectual assent to the teaching of Christ (or the pastor or Sunday school teacher); the issue is to make it applicable to one’s life. The competitive nature of sports produces a crucible where one’s faith can be refined. It is one thing to say that you are controlled by the Holy Spirit, and quite another to demonstrate it after striking out or fouling out of a game. It is one thing to say that you understand self-control is to be manifest in the life of one controlled by the fruit of the Spirit. And yet demonstrate that control after someone has viciously fouled you or cheated and won the match. Discipleship is that process where the individual follows Christ, learns from Christ,
I
nterrogative introduction: What comes to your mind when you see here - God and Dog in an associating mood? To be a good follower of God we need to be inquisitive: Am I ‘strong believer’ in God? What kind of faith do I have in God? Is God only mine, my family, my ethnic race, and my religious affiliation or is God equally belongs to everyone and the whole universe? Do I obey God or do I let God obey my commands? How have I been using God for these many years? What do I mean by ‘born again’? Is ‘born again’ means that God can use me now because I am fully committed my life to God or that I can use God freely to pursue my desire to the extent of threatening others? In a simple way, am I using God or is God using me? Is God under my control (like a dog) or am I under the control of God (Hunter)? I. On appropriation of God: Down through the ages, humankinds (irrespective of religious belief ) have tried to limit the greatness of God. The gods of the Hindus are completely at the control of Brahmins who claim that they possess certain mantras which if used makes difficult for gods to refuse their demands or ‘orders’. Many Muslims have used God to fulfil their ambitious ideology –jihadresulting to the invention of many religious extremists. The people of Israel tried to privatize God by claiming to be the chosen race and holy nation which exclude all other nations. The name of God has been used by Israel to justified elimination of other people (other nations) physically and to loot their property during the time of exodus event. They even tried to confine God’s dwelling place to Jerusalem Temple. This was against the promise of God to Abraham. The story of Prophet Jonah testified that God is not for the people of the Jews alone but for whole nations. Unfortunately, later on, Christians step into the shoe of the Jews and tried to appropriate and manipulate God. Church Fathers monopolized God by limiting God to few Creeds and Dogmas. Many theologians continue to restrict God through their research work forgetting that their work is constrained by certain context and time. They unfairly claim that what they found about God is universally and eternally valid. Is it possible for a finite being (human) to know everything about an infinite being (God) - who was, who is and who will be for eternity? The European Christians once thought that God belongs to them and that it was mandatory for them to liberate God. This has led them to launch crusade (Christian holy war) against the supposedly infidels (Muslims) - resulting to the death of thousands innocent men, women and children. They also believed that they have the right to colonize the whole world and control over it. Colonialism thus started with the appropriation of God. Today, with “In God we Trust” label in dollar, USA is distributing arms and bombs around the world. All scriptures affirmed that God created everything and therefore God alone is the creator. Therefore, Bible prohibits human of creation and worshipping of idols. Consequently Christians instead of worshiping idols create god to gratify their petty and selfish interests. They create a god (god-ofconvenience) who can be easily lured by flattery, praise, worship, prayers and ‘liberal’ offerings. Why do people continue to create gods? People consider private property
and then applies what he has learned. This is not a mere intellectual exercise, but is a lifecycle process where one moves from spiritual “infancy” (being born again) and progresses to spiritual maturity (with perfection coming the day we are face-to-face with our Savior). The ultimate purpose of maturity, however, is not a mere developmental exercise; there is divine purpose in our maturing. Our God is a redemptive God, calling people unto Himself. The strategy He has adopted is reproduction through multiplication. Once one is saved (born again) there is progression from infancy to spiritual maturity for the purpose of reproduction –by proclamation of the message of life in Christ as well as demonstration of that life in the believer. The reasons why sports and recreation contribute so significantly to the process of growing in Christ-likeness through discipleship: 1. Because Sports and Recreation are activity oriented and the participant learns by doing “Theoretical to Practical”. 2. Because Sports and Recreation produce an enjoyable environment which tends to enhance instruction. 3. Because Sports and Recreation can produce a pressurized environment resulting in unsanctified behavior which gives opportunity for reproof, correction and instruction (as well as confession, repentance and restoration). 4. The competitive element in sports teaches us how to be goal setters and how to pursue them developing perseverance so that, like Paul, we can say we have “fought the good fight, finished the race and kept the faith” 2 Tim. 4: 7. 5. Sports and Recreation activities create an environment that demands accountability. 6. Sports and Recreation give an opportunity for modeling the life of Christ in positive and negative situations. After initiating contact and manifesting Christ-like behavior, discipleship demands proclamation . . . 7. The beginning of discipleship is proclamation, and Sports and Recreation give the opportunity for the believer to fellowship with the unbeliever and, thereby, have opportunities to share the gospel. The bottom line is that the Apostle Paul has given us liberty in the proclamation of
the gospel. In I Cor. 9, he indicated that he was so free that he could become a “Jew” to reach the Jews or a “Greek” to reach the Greeks. That was a culturally offensive statement to make to either group!! There was no way a Jew wanted to become a Greek or viceversa, but Paul said the gospel was so important, that he had liberty even to become a despised pagan or stiff-necked Jew for the sake of the gospel. Could this mean that the church is free to use sports as she glorifies God in redemptive partnership? Could this mean that the church should embrace a sports ministry as part of the in-reach and outreach strategy? Could this mean that the mission’s efforts of the church could include sending out her coaches and athletes to foreign shores? Could this mean that the missions’ efforts of the church could include supporting the equipping of nationals in how their churches or their country could use sports and recreation to reach the lost and “train them up”? The Apostle Paul has also demonstrated for us, and encouraged us in, expediency –excelling in all things to accomplish the greatest results. In I Cor. 9:22, Paul said, “I have become all things to all men that I may, by all means, save some.” Paul was not extolling license to do anything sinful or to violate someone’s conscience. In fact, Paul’s theme in I Cor. 9 deals with his willingness to forego liberties for the sake of the gospel. However, within that willingness was a passion for, and subjection of self for the sake of the gospel that led him to cultural liberty. Paul would find out what was culturally important and employ that ‘MEANS’ to preach the gospel; he would then culturally adapt to advance the Kingdom. Knowing the importance of sport in the culture of the world, Paul would undoubtedly use sports as a platform for the gospel today; I believe he even would use it to plant churches and to promote church growth. I believe he would even instruct Timothy and Titus to consider using sports as a culturally relevant tool for the church – a tool by which the gospel could be proclaimed, people won to Christ and then built up in their faith. He would do this, “not because Sports are important but the gospel work is”.

uring the holidays my family traveled to London, England, for a vacation. The trip was an analogy of a much more important journey each of us is on--fulfilling God’s plan for his or her life. For one thing, the preparation was longer than the journey itself. We prepared for months, checking flight times and prices and making certain all our paperwork was in order. Some of the preparation was tedious and time-consuming. How true this is in the spiritual realm as well! In fact, the season of preparation God requires of us often drags out so long we get discouraged because we are eager to be going somewhere. But if all the “equipment” isn’t in place and in the right condition, we won’t make it to the end of the journey. Jesus prepared until He was 30 years old for a mission that lasted only three years. For another thing, once we had made all the preparations, we could relax. All we had to do was get on the plane and trust the expertise of those in charge. Everything we needed was provided for us. It is this way on our spiritual journey, too. When we are walking in purpose, God will do through us all He intends and provide the means for us to accomplish His will. Often, however, we resist God’s manDR. THAMSING LAMKANG date to relinquish our concerns and trust Sports Resource Center (Northeast) India Him, and we end up carrying a burden we

as the source of security. Influenced by the same logic, they seek appropriation of God also as their private property and seek security. Privatization and monopolization of God became a serious concern today. When God is privatized “I am holier than thou” attitude is developed. Then people became exclusive stubbornly rolled themselves up in the cocoon of their belief. This can be seen through the life of both individual and groups. Today with each religious group/denomination claiming God to be their own, frequent religious (various faith affiliation/denominations) clashes occur. There are Baptists who feel that only Baptist church members will go to heaven. Members belonging to Revival, Pentecostal, Presbyterians, Roman Catholic might be having the same thought that only those who are in their denomination will go to heaven. Even within the Church, menfolk thought that they are nearer to God and that woman cannot be given equal privileges in the church ministry. At the same time, there is division with some members or groups (for instance, prayer warriors) claiming to be more spiritual (more manipulative of God?) than others. A person who can stubbornly take fasting for many days (for whatever reason including selfish gain) is considered a very spiritual person. Such pseudo-spiritual-superiority-complex (or say superficial belief ) was denounced by Jesus when He says: ‘On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you evildoers.’(Matt.7:21-23). We even feel that since ours is a Christian state or Christian majority state/region we are more privilege than others in getting salvation. Unfairly superiority complex on the basis of one’s belief is developed and put into practice. When God has done something good, it is for them only (e.g. Salvation) and not for others. When some ills/troubles affect them, they are positively interpreted as preventive measures of God. They said that God out of love send ills/troubles to keep them spiritually strong. If the same ills/troubles happen to their neighbours (others), it is considered a curse from God for their disobedience and wickedness. If natural calamities hit Gujarat and Odisha(Orissa), it is punishment(curse) from God. If earthquake or hailstorm hits Nagaland or Mizoram or USA, they would say, “it is out of God’s love”. So the self-righteous people keep on searching others’ sin - as if they are much better than others. This is not a new thing anyway. So often Jesus was asked for whose ‘sin’ a person was getting sick/blind/lame or misfortune befalls on a person. Jesus told those seekers of ‘sin’ that everything has purpose in life and that they should love and accept one another as they are instead of searching each other’s sin and condemning one another. II. On Bribing God: At one point of time, I thought that those who obey church rules
and regulations sincerely are the only people who believe in God. But to my utter surprise, I came to realize that there are people like murderers, thieves, extortionists, black marketers (drug peddlers, ganja traders, wine sellers), are all believers in God. These people even pray more than others so that they are not killed by others, they are not caught by police while involving in unhealthy business and so on. Once they succeeded in their business, they give generously (huge amount of money) to church so that God might protect them even in the future (I often hear many Christians saying sarcastically that the pitch of prayers of church leaders depend on the amount of money its member gives). They might have been influenced by distorted theologies that says ‘the more one gives, the more one is rewarded.’ Expert thieves do the same. By thieves I mean those officers, contractors, politicians, or any other who live luxuriously with government fund meant for the poor and the common people. Their actions have created and are creating many ‘robbers’ in our Jerusalem-Jericho road today. However, many of these people are sponsoring missionaries, theological students and donating huge amount to theological institutions as if such ‘appeasing policy’ would please God. Many rich people are lavishly offering Christmas feast. Others sponsored different programmes such as father’s camp, mother’s camp, youth camp. Huge donations were made for church buildings, Jubilee memorial Hall etc. How many lives have they spoilt and how many people have been killed through their dirty business? Can we bribe God (like we bribed a minister, a political leader or a government official) in order to fulfil our favours? I do not know what God would be thinking about them. But to my understanding, this is how we try to placate God. This is how we have been playing with God. This is how we try to lure God with money as much as we lure a dog with a morsel of rice. It is wrong to assume God as bribe-taker. God will not forsake justice for the sake of money. III. On Prayers: Our prayers are full of petition: ‘give me that’, ‘give me this’, ‘do for me this”, ‘do for me that’ etc. etc. Our prayers are most of the time ‘order’ - forcing God to obey us like a Dog and are hardly a prayer of submission: ‘let your will be done’. Ours are not prayer of humbleness or willingness to sacrifice for God. We do not seek the will of God. We wanna God to fully submit to our needs. Even lazy students ask God to help them pass their exam. Jesus did not force God to do his will because that would tantamount to controlling God. Think, God must be getting thousands, may be millions, of prayers all the time, from all over the world, in a host of languages, asking for all manner of things. But we are not feeling shy at all to force God to do something for us (good or bad). We became a very ‘impatient being’- craving to get things done within a short period of time. Jesus must be interceding for us “forgive them for they do not know what they do.”
Many of our churches often pray at the beginning of the worship service to chase away ‘evil spirit’ or ‘satan’ in the name of God. Interesting as it might be but why bother about such ‘spirits’ because God (who is in control of everything) is with us in the midst of our worship. Is it not trying to chase away evil spirits evidence of our lack of faith? Many Christians are threatened to hear the presence of evil spirit in such worship. We come to Church to worship God and build good relationship with everyone including, I believe, ‘evil spirits’- so that they might repent. Evil spirit may be able to create a situation/atmosphere for committing sin but they can never force us physically to commit sin. We should not blame evil spirit for all the sin we commit. Human beings are responsible for uncountable sins. As long as we blame evil spirit we may not get time to repent. Although beyond our comprehension, God as the creator of the whole universe, might have set provision for all beings including what we assume ‘evil spirits’. Why not give chance to God to let things happen in God’s own time? Our society has been divided more than ever before. There is a huge gap between the rich and the poor. The rich families gather together and give thanks to God at the dining table for the provision (table-filled-delicious-food items) without really asking how their food comes to their table (I mean through whose labour). The prayer usually is, “we thank God for the daily food provided for us although there are many people who goes to bed with empty stomach. May you continue to provide our daily needs so that we may continue to praise thee.” Today many people are getting sick: some because of over-eating and others out of starvation. If the rich people’s prayer includes sharing of God’s blessings with others, there will be rice in every plate and every one will go to bed with something in their stomach. The rich man’s table may be filled with food items but if their neighbours go to bed empty stomach, prayers may not reach God. All riches and wealth are not blessings from God. Who knows the neighbours might be poor because the rich people have snatched away their share. God is for everyone. God wants everyone to live a dignified life because all of us are God’s children. Rich people should not use God to legitimize the misery of others. IV. On Fasting: On many counts I find the observation of fasting as a tactic forcing God to fulfil one’s desire which can be very dangerous. We must be aware that fasting is important in so far as it helps one to discipline oneself spiritually and physically to be a better person even as Jesus did. The time of fasting can be made use to meditate and reflect upon the word of God. It is also a means to break injustice of political administration as in Esther’s story. It is also time to build good relationship with God and fellow beings. But, today fasting has been used to fulfil an individual or group’ desire. If a drug peddler fast many days seeking God’s help to
were never meant to bear. The result is that we feel stressed when God intended for us to have peace and rest. Instead, we must acknowledge our inability to fulfill His plan on our own and declare our reliance on Him. Finally, on the flight there was unexpected turbulence. It was uncomfortable and in some people stirred feelings of fear and the disturbing thought that we might not make it to our destination. But I knew the plane had been through inclement weather many times and had arrived safely. The key, in an airplane as in your journey with God, is to stay in your place and rest in the fact that those who know better than you are in control. If you get out of your seat to walk around, you may be hurt, and if you try to bail out, you will die. No matter how securely anchored you are, you will still experience some storms. But remember that everything that happens to you on the journey is either part of God’s plan or occurs with His permission. He is the one in control. And as Paul points out, hardships sometimes occur “that we might not rely on ourselves but on God” (2 Cor. 1:9). God will often require us to do things that are beyond our natural ability. The women Mimi Haddad writes about in “Brave-Hearted Women” found this to be true. But as the stories of their lives clearly demonstrate, there are no limits to what you can accomplish when you are doing what God ordained for you to do--if you rely totally on Him. let his/her vehicle passes through safely at Police Check gate, is that genuine? Whether we are right or wrong we want God to be in our side and use God for our interests. For instance, during the Naga-Kuki ethnic conflict (1991-1992) in Manipur, I was told that many Poumai Naga women were observing fast and praying to God to strengthen the force of the Nagas and their weapons, so that the Naga fighters might shoot straight at the Kuki forces without a bullet went missing the target. The Kuki people might be saying the same kind of prayer! Many Nagas are praying for the safety of Naga underground from Indian armed forces or for particular faction. Do we believe that God will be on our side all the time (whether we are right or wrong)? Is not God belongs to everyone? Is it right to use God to serve our own interest? It is unwise on our part to force God to fulfil our desires through employing different tactics because God knows each of us and all our needs in detail. We need to be patient and humble before God. Concluding Remark: Well readers, do not think that I am against observation of fasting, or prayer, or worship or to say ‘being’ a Christian. Not at all. What I want to question here is: are we forcing God through different tactics to do what we want rather than seeking God’s will with humility? Have we gone beyond from ‘a person (nation) after God’s own heart’ to ‘a person (nation) after one’s own heart’? Let God be God. It is absurd to think that God can be bribed with offerings and placated with praises and adoration. When we give tithes and offerings or praise God, we should not expect anything in return. Genuine worship/devotion comes out of selfless love for God and having concern for unfortunate ones in our society. Let’s worship God in reverence, in fear and in humility. Let’s live a life in such a way that people might see the greatness and goodness of God in us. It will be too dangerous to think God in term of Dog - domesticated, tamed and put on a leash. We cannot draw out Leviathan with fish-hook (Job 41:1ff ). God can move high mountains and stir up mighty ocean to fulfil God’s plan. In the same way, God can perform miracles through small and insignificant things such as a ‘stick’ (Moses), a pebble (David), a fish (Jonah), fire (Elijah), Jaw bones (Samson), Oil (Elisha), bread and fish (Jesus), etc. God can do anything with anything. We can feel the presence of God in our life and also see the wondrous act of God through the whole universe but cannot express fully in human language. God is immeasurable by any standard. Privatisation of God limits God’s greatness. Therefore, let the greatness, the immeasurable knowledge and the unfathomable love of God hovers the whole universe for all creation (human, birds and animals, trees and plants, fish, air, rivers and mountains). Blind faith restricts God to ‘self interest’ resulting to disharmony, violence, hatred and at last bring bad name to God. Human beings should not try to be God or to possess God. As long as we remain ignorant about God’s sovereign power there will be problem in our relationship with our fellow-beings, with nature and with God. It’s time to change caution note from “Beware of Dog” in our Gate to one of “Beware of God” – in our heart. For discussion: zkpahr@gmail.com

Nehru’s 1938 rebuff to Nazis to be sold in Britain
NEW DElhi, NovEmbEr 12 (iANS): A rare typewritten letter by India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru from London to a diplomat in Nazi Germany turning down his invitation will be auctioned by British auction house Mullock’s Nov 17, a statement said Friday. The latter dated Sep 7, 1938 expressed Jawaharlal Nehru’s inability to travel to Germany at the invitation of then diplomat Hans-Georg von Studnitz and the Nazi authorities. “As you know I am not at all in sympathy with the Nazi philosophy and aims. I am grateful however to you and to the German authorities for the invitation,” Nehru said in his letter. In the letter, Jawaharlal Nehru commented on his daughter’s health which prevents him from travelling far but then adds: “...in any event the present international situation would come in the way of my going to Germany”. Hans-Georg von Studnitz, the author of “While Berlin Burns”, a chronicle of war time Germany from his dairies, held a senior post in the German foreign office’s press and information section in Berlin throughout the war.
Team Anna member denies rift between Kejriwal, Bedi
NEW DElhi/GhAziAbAD, NovEmbEr 12 (iANS): Even as differences between Arvind Kejriwal and Kiran Bedi were aired publicly, another Team Anna member Manish Sisodia Saturday said it should not be seen as a divide. Sisodia dubbed it as information gap and said there was no difference of opinion. “I think the information about Kejriwalji’s interview must have reached Kiranji in a very brief manner. It should not be seen as there is any difference of view between the two,” Sisodia told reporters in Ghaziabad. “Though I have not talked to either of them... perhaps Kiranji did not have some information, or Kejriwal did not have some information. I don’t think there is any need to give it an interpretation,” he added. Kejriwal said in an interview Friday that Bedi should not have inflated her air ticket bills. The former police officer hit back Saturday, saying he did not understand the issue. “The problem is that perhaps he does not understand the issue. Perhaps if Arvindji had a little more understanding of this issue, his answer would have been different,” Bedi told reporters. She had submitted inflated air ticket bills to NGOs reimbursing her travel expenses. “I have given a whole interview on this, if he (Kejriwal) sees it he will get the answers,” Bedi said.
Shoe hurled at Varun Gandhi
bArEilly, NovEmbEr 12 (PTi): Agitated BJP workers today hurled shoes at the cavalcade of party MP Varun Gandhi after he allegedly refused to attend a function in Nawabganj tehsil in Bareilly. The BJP MP was scheduled to dedicate to the public Guru Govind Singh park and Naagpanchami mela chowk, for which preparations were made by Nawabganj Nagar Palika Parishad, party sources said. Though Gandhi reached Nawabganj he allegedly refused to attend the pre-scheduled programme, which irked the party workers, they said. The workers showed black flags to the MP and hurled shoes on his cavalcade, sources said. Organiser of the programme and chairman of the Parishad Kunwar Ravindra Singh Rathore said the programme was fixed by BJP and the workers got agitated due to Gandhi’s “refusal”.
Tharoor files defamation suit
ThiruvANANThAPurAm, NovEmbEr 12 (iANS): Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor Saturday filed a Rs.10 crore defamation suit against The Sunday Indian magazine for publishing an article insinuating that he has black money stashed away in Swiss banks. Tharoor, a former minister of state for external affairs, has appointed Kochi-based legal firm of Sherrif Associates to represent him. The firm has sent the defamation notice to the editor in charge and two others officials of the magazine. “In the article that appeared in the issue on their website on Nov 3rd, even though the name Tharoor was not used, it had all indications that the person who was mentioned as having unaccounted money in Swiss bank was Tharoor. It also mentioned that Tharoor used his influence to see that this news did not appear in the media here,” said a press release issued from Tharoor’s office here. The lawyers’ notice sent to the magazine says that after the magazine came out, Tharoor was flooded with enquiries from friends and well-wishers to find out whether there was any merit in the report. This had also dented to his image. The notice also says that Tharoor has no account in any Swiss bank and all his assets have been declared before the Election Commission and also to the prime minister. The maggazine said that three MPs allegedly had unaccounted money stashed away in Swiss banks and one of them was from Kerala.

oN boArD Air iNDiA oNE, NovEmbEr 12 (iANS): With a combative opposition accusing him of going soft on 26/11 terror, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday said he was optimistic about the resumed peace process with Pakistan, but stressed that he has made it clear that if another “barbarous” Mumbai attack were to happen, it will be a “setback”. “I did discuss (with Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani) the Mumbai terror attack. Those who perpetrated the barbarous
attack must be brought to justice,” Manmohan Singh told reporters on board his special aircraft while returning from the SAARC summit in the Maldives. “I left Prime Minister Gilani in no doubt that if public opinion in India is not satisfied that justice is being done to those responsible to the barbarous attack, it won’t be possible to move forward with the peace process,” said Manmohan Singh. “We both recognize that if there is another attack like Mumbai, it will be a
setback to the normalization of relations. And that was understood by Prime Minister Gilani,” said the prime minister. The prime minister’s clarification came two days after he held wide-ranging talks with his Pakistani counterpart on the sidelines of the SAARC summit and amid the Bharatiya Janata Party’s accusation that he has gone soft on terror emanating from Pakistan barely days before the third anniversary of 26/11 attack. Striking an upbeat note, the two leaders vowed to write a new chapter in relations between India and Pakistan and hoped that the next round of the dialogue will be more constructive and resultoriented. Pointing out that the relations between India and Pakistan are “subject to accidents,” Manmohan Singh took positive note of the decision of Pakistan to grant Most Favoured Nation status to India and stressed on encouraging development in areas like trade and the willingness of Pakistan to discuss all issues, including that of terror. “I told him (Gilani) that terror as an instrument of state policy has no takers in the world and it has given rise to Pakistani terrorism. Terror has to be dealt with firmly,” he said. In these areas (trade and terror), it is possible to find the way forward, he said. “Trade and economic relationship is one area where progress is possible. “The thinking people in Pakistan realize that trade is a win-win situation,” he said. Manmohan Singh also underlined that the pow-
erful Pakistani Army was fully on board in carrying forward the resumed peace process. “I did discuss with Prime Minister Gilani whether the Pakistan Army is fully on board to carry forward with the peace process,” he said. “The sense I got was that after a long time, Pakistan’s armed forces are fully on board,” he said. Reacting to criticism back home about his describing Gilani as a man of peace, Manmohan Singh said: “I have met Prime Minister Gilani four-five times. He agreed with me that there is not way but to find a peaceful resolution of all outstanding issues.” “I, therefore, believe that Pakistan has a democratic government and we will like to strengthen the hands of democratic government,” he said “In Gilani, we have a prime minister who we can work with,” he said. However, Manmohan Singh pointed out that his decision to resume the peace process with Pakistan was not individualcentric. “Our approach to Pakistan is trust but verify. We are not putting blind faith in one individual. I do hope it will genuinely lead to the normalization of relations,” he said. “If our government gets solid evidence that terror is continuing (from Pakistan), it will be a negative factor. If trade relations move positively, it will be a positive factor,” Manmohan Singh said. “I come back with the expectation that the second round of resumed dialogue which will commence very soon will have the advantage of more informed dialogue. I am optimistic,” he said.
Media panel joins chorus against Markandey Katju
NEW DElhi, NovEmbEr 12 (AGENciES): The South Asia Media Commission has joined the brigade criticising Press Council Chairman Justice Markandey Katju’s demand to arm the government with “draconian” powers over the news media and his dismissal of attempts at self-regulation. The Commission, which audits media content and monitors journalists’ safety and freedom, admits that self-regulation has made a modest start, but accuses the Press Council of hindering such efforts. A statement issued by Commission president K.K. Katyal points out that the Press Council had “developed cold feet under the pressure of vested interests,” with regard to the publication of a report naming newspapers ac-
cused of indulging in paid news. “Instead of running down the self-regulatory mechanism, as has been done by Justice Katju, the Press Council will do well to offer constructive suggestions to strengthen it,” said the statement. The Media Commission also highlighted “the dangers of the proposals of penal action against “defaulting media,” through imposition of fines and withholding the government advertisements.” Several States had taken such steps in the past, with the Central government also recently directing PSUs to stop advertisements to newspapers in Jammu & Kashmir. “The media all along has been opposed to this practice. It is, therefore, surprising that such anti-media proposals are sought Rolls of kite threads hang on a tree as part of decoration for a kite festival organized by Delhi Tourism in New to be revived,” it said. Direct your anger towards Central govt: Mayawati to Rahul Gandhi
luckNoW, NovEmbEr 12 (PTi): Targeting Rahul Gandhi for his “angry” remarks on the situation in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Mayawati on Saturday said he should direct his anger at the Central government rather than turning his ire on the State administration. With Assembly elections in UP round the corner, the Bahujan Samaj Party supremo also told the AICC general secretary not to indulge in vote bank politics and enact a “drama” of finding fault with everything in her State and that he should focus on the Centre. The Congress hit back at Mayawati saying there is no need to “advice” Gandhi and accused her of “misusing maximum funds” given by the Centre in constructing parks and erecting stat-
ues including those of her own, Mayawati’s attack on Gandhi came two days before the Congress leader kicks off the party’s poll campaign in UP. The Chief Minister while referring to Gandhi’s recent remarks that the prevailing state of affairs in UP makes him angry claimed that welfare issues do not get the attention of the Congress “yuvraj” and he does not get angry over them. Without naming Gandhi, Mayawati said she wants to tell the “yuvraj” that “instead of enacting drama for vote bank politics, issuing wrong statements and ex-
pressing anger, he should rather leasing funds for the welfare works direct it (anger) on the govern- and projects for Uttar Pradesh,” ment in Delhi”. she said. Speaking at a function to dedicate UP Viklang Uddhar Shakuntala Misra University on the outskirts of Lucknow, she also questioned Gandhi’s “silence” on “attacks and harassment” on the people from UP when they go to Mayawati said Gandhi should Congress-ruled States like Maalso help on the issue of inflation harashtra and Delhi in search of and rising petrol prices which livelihood. The miracle boys and their alma mater
DhADGAoN (NANDurbAr), NovEmbEr 12 (AGENciES): As their names are called on the stage, they struggle to bundle-up a huge bunch of medals together. “Forget it, just carry as many as you can,” a hurried voice tells the two brothers. They rush to the stage, leaving behind some medals in the bag. “We have still left quite a few medals at home. Carrying all the medals would have been too heavy,” 20-year-old Gulabsingh Parshi Vasave says sheepishly. He, along with his elder brother Bheemsingh Parshi Vasave (21), has won 82 medals till now in various athletic events at the State and the national level. This week, they travelled more than 400 km to get appreciated by the school which trained them and to express their gratitude towards it at the Satpuda Youth Carnival. They belong to a clan of more than 5,000 students who have passed out from the 13 ‘Jeevanshalas’ (life-schools) run by the Narmada Navnirman Abhiyaan in the Sardar Sarovar Dam — affected hilly tribal villages of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh since 20 years. The schools have trained tribal children till standard IV in Maharashtra and Gujarat and till standard V in Madhya Pradesh. This was the first time when a get-together of the alumni was organised between November 7 and 9 here.
The Morung Express
In the youth carnival, Gulabsingh and Bheemsingh, along with a few others, were hailed as the mascots of development for the many small tribal settlements in the Satpuda ranges. For Dhankhedi, the native place of the Vasave brothers, they both are nothing less than miracle boys. Rising from abject poverty, today they stay in the State government hostel at Pune’s sports training institute and train themselves in athletics, with promising jobs within their reach. Asked about their training and studies, all they recollect is the hardships that they faced. They tell how they lived in a one-room thatched home with a big family, how their home used to get blown away by the blowing winds and how it was only last year that a solar light lighted their home. They said they still have to walk 5 km in the mountains to reach home. “Earlier, we had to walk 40 km, but thanks to the kachcha road being laid till Pimpalkhunta now,” Bheemsingh said. For both of them, life has taken a twist, albeit for better. And they attribute it completely to the Jeevanshala. “The whole idea behind jeevanshala was that the schooling system should be a part of the village. It should have community involvement and participation. The Jeevanshala was the first step towards the fight against corrup-
tion,” Medha Patkar told The Hindu. Narmada Navnirman Abhiyaan, the registered trust which runs the schools, also accepts donations from various private contributors and Indian corporate houses. “The students in the Jeevanshalas do farming, learn about biodiversity of their area. We use Adivasi dialects. Teaching the children in their mother tongue is very essential. We have educated tribal youths who teach the children in Pavri and Bhillari languages,” she said. She said that the initiative gives opportunities to the educated tribal youths too. “While deciding the syllabus, we had taken help from Krishna Kumar and Anil Sadgopal of the NCERT [National Council of Educational Research and Training]. We also added lot of extra-curricular syllabus,” she said When asked about her dream for the Jeevanshala, she said, those who studied in the schools should learn further and write tribal history. “They should write their own history. This youth force needs to become a part of the national people’s movement. We want these youths to give at least one year to the movement (National Alliance for People’s Movement),” she said. But the statistics do not paint a very positive picture. Of the 4,228 boys and 1,231 girls who have passed standard
IV from 13 the Jeevanshalas since 1991, only two have completed higher education. Ten of them have become graduates, whereas 13 have gained diplomas. The drop-out rate is very high. Those working in the region for years attributed it to poverty. “They do not want to spare their children for school because then they do not have anyone to help them in the agricultural and livelihood activities,” Professor Sham Patil said. The drop-out rate escalates further in case of girls, who have to handle the additional responsibility of taking care of the house and the siblings. The Jeevanshalas face lot of problems. The most important being the issue of recognition. After running the school without government recognition for so many years, all that the Jeevanshalas presently have is an assurance of recognition. “Right now, there is no recognition to the Jeevanshalas. Every year, we have to seek permission of the Education Department to allow our kids to appear for Standard IV exams. This year, State Ministers Patagrao Kadam, Rajendra Gavit and Padmakar Valvi visited the area and promised that the schools will get recognition soon. The State government has also recommended our schools to the Tribal Development Board in Delhi. But that proposal has been pending since a year-and-a-half,” Patkar said.
Mayawati in her rejoinder to the remark sarcastically said that Gandhi does not get angry at his partyruledgovernmentinHaryanawhen Dalits are “uprooted” there. Taking potshots at the Congress for stating that there was ‘jungle raj’ in UP, she referred to various incidents taking place in the earlier Congress governments of the State saying at that time it was regarded the rule of law. In New Delhi, AICC spokesman Rashid Alvi said there is no need to advice Gandhi. “She is always hungry for funds despite receiving maximum funds from the Centre. It is a State where maximum funds have been misused,” he said. Mayawati has “misused funds in constructing parks and erecting statutes including her own, which is unheard of in our country,” Alvi added.
Taj Mahal will turn blue on Sunday night
NEW DElhi, NovEmbEr 12 (AGENciES): The Union health ministry and anti-diabetes activists have managed to convince the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) to give permission to light up the Taj Mahal to spread awareness against a disease that affects nearly 51 million Indians. The ASI has cleared a proposal to illuminate the Taj Mahal in blue on November 13, the eve of the World Diabetes Day. While a red ribbon is symbolic of HIV, a blue circle is the universal symbol of diabetes. The ASI has also allowed two other world heritage sites - Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri - to be draped in blue. Indudhar Dwivedi, superintendent archeologist of ASI, Agra, said, “This is the first time the ASI has shown such a gesture to light up these three world heritage sites. We wanted to support the drive to raise awareness against diabetes that affects so many of us.” Dr Anoop Misra from Fortis Hospitals, which is part of the Diabetes Blue Fortnight programme being supported by the health ministry, Heal Foundation, Project Hope, N DOC and WHO, said, “Taj Mahal draped in blue will spread awareness about diabetes. The world’s most recognized monument to be lit in blue will send a global message. It will help multiply preventive efforts several times.” Several other monuments will
be lit up in blue to commemorate the World Diabetes Day. These include Old Fort, Red Fort, Qutub Minar and Humayun Tomb in the national Capital; Imambada in Lucknow; Manek Chowk and City Palace Ground in Udaipur; Sidhivinayak Mandir and CST Station in Mumbai; Sahniwada Fort in Pune, 13 Gates of Ahmedabad; Konark Temple in Orissa and Victoria Memorial in Kolkata. Globally, several other iconic monuments will be lit in blue, including the Inverness Castle in the UK; Fountain Teatro Valli and Reggio Emilia in Italy; Bomb monument in Hiroshima; Union Square in San Francisco and CN Tower and Niagara Falls in Canada. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) said last year, over 900 monuments and buildings in 84 countries were lit up in blue on the World Diabetes Day (November 14). Diabetes was recognized as a serious threat in 2006, and in a landmark resolution passed by the UN General Assembly it became the first non-communicable disease to be recognized as a global threat back then. Till then, only communicable diseases had captured theworld’sattentiondespitenon-communicablediseasesaccountingforover 60% of morbidity and mortality in the world. For the first time, the UN also asked all member states to establish national policies on the treatment, prevention and care of diabetes.

offers asylum Arab League votes to suspend Syria toNiger Gaddafi son: report
cAIro, NovemBer 12 (Ap): The Arab League voted Saturday to suspend Syria in four days and warned it could face sanctions if it does not end its bloody crackdown against anti-government protesters. The decision was a symbolic blow to a nation that prides itself on being a powerhouse of Arab nationalism. Qatar Foreign Minister Hamad bin Jassim said 18 countries agreed to the suspension, which will take effect on Wednesday. Syria, Lebanon and Yemen voted against it, and Iraq abstained. The Arab League also will introduce political and economic sanctions against Syria, he said. Violence has continued unabated since Syria agreed on Nov. 2 to an Arab-brokered peace deal that called for the Syria to halt violence against protesters, pull tanks and armored vehicles out of cities, release political prisoners and allow journalists and rights groups into the country. "Syria is a dear country for all of us and it pains us to make this decision," bin Jassim said. "We hope there will be a brave move from Syria to stop the violence and begin a real dialogue toward real reform." In a nod to concerns that the decision could pave the way to international intervention as occurred in Libya, bin Jassim stressed that "no one is talking about a no-fly zone, people are

trying to mix up the cases. None of us is talking about this kind of decision." Dozens of protesters outside had rallied for the decision, carrying placards reading "Freedom for the Syrian people" and "Arab leaders are garbage" as they chanted for the removal of Syrian President Bashar Assad. They were joined by demonstrators from Yemen, protesting violent government crackdowns in their country. The decision comes as

secution and incitement to murder. He is accused of killing Tripoli football player and national team member Bashir Al Rayan ... There is strong circumstantial evidence that he was involved in that," Mohammed al-Alagi told Dubai-based Al Arabiya television. Issoufou said he did not know the location of Saif al-Islam who is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on charges of crimes against humanity. "Saif al-Islam is not in Niger. I would have to consider what to do if he comes. We will deal with issues in terms of law and democracy and international agreements," Issoufou said. Niger is a member of the Hague-based global court and officially would have to hand over Saif al-Islam if he arrived on its territory. The ICC says it has been in indirect contact with Saif al-Islam to discuss him giving himself up. He is believed to be deep in the Libyan desert.
November is shaping up to be the bloodiest month yet in Syria's 8-month-old uprising. More than 250 Syrian civilians have been killed in the past 11 days as the regime besieges the rebellious city of Homs. The U.N. estimates some 3,500 people have been killed in the Syrian crackdown since the uprising began eight months ago, inspired by the revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia. The bloodshed has spiked dramatically in re-
cent weeks amid signs that more protesters are taking up arms to protect themselves, changing the face of what has been a largely peaceful movement. Many fear the change plays directly into the hands of the regime by giving the military a pretext to crack down with increasing force. Although the crackdown has led to broad international isolation, Assad appears to have a firm grip on power. Assad, and his father who ruled Syria before
him, stacked key security and military posts with members of their minority Alawite sect over the past 40 years, ensuring loyalty by melding the fate of the army and the regime. As a result, the army leadership will likely protect the regime at all costs, for fear it will be persecuted if the country's Sunni majority gains the upper hand. Most of the army defectors so far appear to be lower-level Sunni conscripts. Syria blames the blood-

oKUmA, JApAN, NovemBer 12 (Ap): Media allowed into Japan's tsunamidamaged nuclear power plant for the first time Saturday saw a striking scene of devastation: twisted and overturned trucks, crumbling reactor buildings and piles of rubble virtually untouched since the wave struck more than eight months ago. Representatives of the Japanese and international media, including The Associated Press, were allowed into the plant with the government's chief official in charge of the world's worst nuclear
disaster since Chernobyl in 1986. The tour was intended to demonstrate how much the situation at the plant has stabilized since the March 11 tsunami, though reporters had to wear full-body protective gear and submit to radiation scans afterward. Mangled trucks, flipped over by the wave, remain along the roads inside the complex. Piles of rubble stand where the walls of the plant's reactor structures crumbled, and large pools of water still cover parts of the sprawling campus. Officials said the situa-
Suu Kyi ‘likely’ to stand in Myanmar by-election YANgoN, NovemBer 12 (pTI): Myanmar's democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi is likely to contest a by-election in the coming months, a spokesman for her party said on Saturday, following a change to party registration laws. The National League for Democracy (NLD), delisted last year for boycotting a rare election, will consider on Friday whether to reregister as a political party, paving the way for Suu Kyi to return to the official political arena. "The NLD is likely to register and also Daw Suu is likely to participate at the coming by-election," Nyan Win, a party spokesman said. Daw is a term of respect in Myanmar. It is not yet clear when a by-election will be held, but there are more than 40 seats available in parliament's two chambers. The NLD won a 1990 election but was never allowed to take office, and it shunned last year's vote largely because of rules that would have forced it to expel imprisoned members. Suu Kyi was under house arrest at the time. She was released a few days after last Novem-
ber's poll, which was widely condemned as a farce by the West and marred by claims of cheating, but the new army-backed government has surprised critics with a series of reformist moves. These include a recent amendment to a law on political parties, endorsed by President Thein Sein, which removed the condition that all parties must agree to "preserve" the country's 2008 constitution, according to state media. A decision to re-register the NLD is widely expected after 100 senior party members gather in Yangon on Friday to discuss the move. Nyan Win did not comment on which constituency Suu Kyi would stand in, or what kind of position she expected, but party sources said she would contest in a Yangon township. While Myanmar is now ruled by a nominally civilian government, itsranksarefilled with former generals. Suu Kyi -- who strongly criticised the constitution, part of what the regime called its "road map to democracy" -- is expected to hold a press conference on Monday to mark the first anniversary of her release.
tion at the plant, which suffered meltdowns and explosions after it was deluged by the tsunami, has improved enough to allow the visit. For weeks after the tsunami, the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, about 140 miles (225 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo, spewed large amounts of radioactive materials onto the surrounding countryside, much of which remains off-limits. The media, including an AP photographer and APTN producer, were allowed to view the grounds of the seaside facility and the outside of several of the damaged reactor units before being taken into the emergency operations center. Environment Minister Goshi Hosono, who heads the government's nuclear response efforts, addressed workers inside the center. Japan's government and the utility that runs the plant, Tokyo Electric Power Co., say radiation leaks are far less of a danger than in the early days of the crisis. They say work is on track toward achieving a "cold shutdown" — in which the temperatures of the reactors are cool and under control.
BeIJINg, NovemBer 12 (AgeNcIeS): China has started selling small uninhabited islands to private developers to promote tourism in a big way, in a sharp turn around by the world’s leading Communist nation. The first of the islands off the country’s east coast was auctioned yesterday for USD 3.2 million to a developer eyeing yacht recreation. The auctioned island, Dayangyu, is located 300 meters off the coast of Ningbo city, Zhejiang province, with an area of 0.258 sq km and a sprawling coastline. The Communist government is proposing to sell many more such islands and has compiled a list of 176 uninhabited islands for development. Ningbo Gaobao Investment Co. Ltd. won the land use rights of Dayangyu for 50 years with an offer of 20 million yuan (USD 3.2 million). In China, land is owned by the state, and the buyers can get only the rights to use the land. “Our company plans to invest 500 million yuan to develop the island,” said Yang Weihua, Ningbo Gaobao’s manager.
oAKLAND, cALIforNIA, NovemBer 12 (Ap): Oakland police handed out eviction notices at an anti-Wall Street encampment and officials elsewhere urged an end to similar gatherings as pressures against Occupy protest sites mounted in the wake of three deaths in different cities, including two by gunfire. Police first pleaded with and then ordered Occupy Oakland protesters to leave their encampment at the City Hall plaza where a man was shot and killed Thursday. Officers acting at the direction of Mayor Jean Quan distributed fliers to protesters late Friday afternoon warning that the camp violates the law and must be disbanded immediately. The notices warned campers they would face arrest if tents and other materials were not removed, although the warnings did not say by when. The city issued similar written warnings before officers raided the encampment before dawn on Oct. 25 with tear gas and bean bags projectiles before arresting 85 people. A day later, Quan allowed protesters to reclaim the disbanded site and the camp has grown substantially since then.

The government has largely sealed off the country from foreign journalists and prevented independent reporting, making it difficult to confirm events on the ground. Key sources of information are amateur videos posted online and details gathered by witnesses and activist groups who then contact the media, often at great personal risk.
JohANNeSBUrg, NovemBer 12 (reUTerS): Niger's President Mahamadou Issoufou said on Friday he had granted Muammar Gaddafi's son Saadi asylum on humanitarian grounds but did not know the location of another fugitive son Saif al-Islam, South African media reported. The announcement will strain already troubled relations between Niger and Libya's interim rulers, who overthrew Muammar Gaddafi after an eight month uprising and want both sons to stand trial for alleged atrocities. Saadi, a businessman and former professional footballer, is in Niger after escaping across the border from Libya when National Transitional Council (NTC) forces captured the capital Tripoli in August. "We have agreed on granting asylum to Saadi Gaddafi for humanitarian reasons," the South African Press Association (SAPA) quoted Issoufou telling a news conference at the end of a twoday visit to South Africa. Interpol has issued a "red notice" requesting member states to arrest Saadi with a view to extradition if they find him on their territory. Libya's interim justice minister on Friday questioned Niger's grounds in granting asylum on humanitarian grounds, saying it was usually given to people facing persecution in their own country. "But al-Saadi has practiced per-

Earlier, the Oakland Police Officer's Association issued an open letter saying the camp is pulling officers away from crime-plagued neighborhoods. "With last night's homicide, in broad daylight, in the middle of rush hour, Frank Ogawa Plaza is no longer safe," the letter said. "Please leave peacefully, with your heads held high, so we can get police officers back to work fighting crime in Oakland neighborhoods." City Council President Larry Reid said outside City Hall on Friday that the
shooting was further proof the tents must come down. He was confronted by a protester who said he wouldn't be in office much longer. "You didn't elect me," Reid snapped back. "You probably ain't even registered to vote!" The Oakland shooting occurred the same day a 35-year-old military veteran apparently shot himself to death in a tent at a Burlington, Vt., Occupy encampment. In Vermont, police said a preliminary investigation showed the veteran fatally shot himself in the head in
a tent in City Hall Park. The death of the Chittenden County man raised questions about whether the protest would be allowed to continue, said Burlington police Deputy Chief Andi Higbee. "Our responsibility is to keep the public safe. When there is a discharge of a firearm in a public place like this it's good cause to be concerned, greatly concerned," Higbee said. On Friday, a man believed to be in his 40s was found dead inside a tent at the Occupy Salt Lake City encampment, from what police said was a combination of drug use and carbon monoxide. The discovery led police to order all protesters to leave the park where they have camped for weeks. The man has not been identified. Group organizers said many of the roughly 150 protesters plan to go to jail rather than abandon the encampment. "We don't even know if this is a tragedy or just natural," protest organizer Jesse Fruhwirth said. "They're scapegoating Occupy." Salt Lake City police Chief Chris Burbank said officers have made 91 arrests at the camp, roughly the same number seen in the area during all of the last year.
Turkish commandos shoot dead lone ferry hijacker
ISTANBUL, NovemBer 12 (reUTerS): Turkish commandos killed a lone hijacker, identified as a Kurdish militant armed with a bomb, in a pre-dawn operation on Saturday to rescue more than 20 passengers and crew held hostage for 12 hours on a highspeed ferry near Istanbul. Hostages aboard the "Kartepe" ferry later described how the hijacker was shot dead minutes after the commandos slipped aboard. "There was no chance left we'd capture him alive. The long phone calls to persuade him (to surrender) failed," Interior Minister Idris Sahin told NTV news channel, adding that 450 grammes of plastic explosive were found on the body. None of the 18 passengers or six crew were hurt, but some were taken to a hospital for checks after their ordeal. The Interior Minister identified the dead hijacker as Mensur Guzel, saying he was a member of "the terrorist organization" -- a reference to the militant Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). Guzel, according to the minister, was born 1984 in Diyarbakir, the southeastern city at the heart of the

Kurdish separatist insurgency, but had been living in western province of Kocaeli, where the ferry set sail from. Three people connected with the dead man had been detained, Sahin said. Officials had described the man as carrying a device with cables with a switch. Before the minister confirmed explosives were found, the provincial governor of Kocaeli had said it was a fake bomb. Since Friday evening, coastguard vessels with commandos aboard had tracked the "sea bus" in the Sea of Marmara before it
ran low on fuel and dropped anchor. Shortly before 5.00 a.m. (0300 GMT) a flurry of activity was evident on the ferry's main deck. Hazy television pictures showed figures moving in the aisle between rows of empty seats. A few people were apparently wearing life jackets. Orders were given for marine commandos to storm the ferry at 5.35 a.m. (0335 GMT) as it lay anchored a few kilometers off shore, some 50 km (30 miles) west of Istanbul, according to Istanbul Governor Huseyin Avni Mutlu. There was no official
word on how the commandos boarded the ferry, but news channels spoke with hostages as they left a police station in the town of Silivri where they had given their accounts of the hijacking. "The terrorist had told the crew to gather us upstairs, we never saw him. He sent us tea and biscuits," Kadir Altunoglu, a man in his thirties, told Samanyolu news channel "We heard five or six gunshots before dawn. We had opened the rear exit door of the ferry to let the commandos in." Another passenger, Ceyhun Tezer, 28, told the NTV
channel: "It lasted no more than 10 minutes after we saw them (the commandos). We heard six gunshots, they told us three in the head and another three in the chest, there were no more gunshots." He said passengers were alarmed the ferry was taking too long for the short run between the towns of Izmit and Karamursel and was off course, but only realised it had been hijacked when they saw news reports on the television in the passenger lounge. NTV also aired security camera footage of a darkhaired man, said to be the hijacker, carrying a sports backpack, walking to the ferry. Transport Minister Binali Yildirim had told reporters in the capital Ankara the hijacker had not made any concrete demands and had only sought fuel, food and drink. Earlier reports said up to five suspected Kurdish militants armed with explosives carried out the hijacking on the high-speed ferry. There was no immediate comment from the PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States, European Union. The PKK is fighting for Kurdish autonomy in the
southeast of Turkey. More than 40,000 people have been killed in the PKK insurgency since the group took up arms in 1984. Last month, in one of the biggest attacks in the history of the insurgency, PKK militants killed 24 soldiers in Hakkari, bordering Iraq, prompting the military to mount cross-border operations. Several thousand PKK fighters are based in the mountains of northern Iraq. Security forces had been prepared for the possibility that the hijacker might have wanted to force the ferry to go to Imrali island in the Sea of Marmara, where PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan has been jailed since 1999, CNN Turk reported. Before a national election in June this year, Ocalan warned of a "big war" unless the state entered serious negotiations with him, and following a series of militant attacks Turkey launched multiple air strikes on PKK bases in northern Iraq, while police detained scores of suspected militants. A hijacking would represent a change in tactics for the PKK which frequently carries out attacks on security forces in the mainly Kurdish southeast.

Suarez scores four as Uruguay crush Chile 4-0
moNteviDeo, November 12 (ap): Luis Suarez scored all four goals as Uruguay stayed on top of South American World Cup qualifying with a 4-0 home win over Chile on Friday. Uruguay played the match without injured top striker Diego Forlan, but Liverpool's Suarez took up the slack and scored in the 42nd, 45th, 67th and 73rd. Uruguay have seven points from three matches and have solidified their spot as the best team in South America. Uruguay won the Copa America - the continental championship - earlier this year and finished fourth in the 2010 World Cup, the best performance among South American teams. "The important thing is the three points," Suarez said. "I scored four goals a couple of times when I was play with Ajax, but this is the first time with the national team." Chile have three points from three matches and are struggling under Argentinaborn coach Claudio Borghi, who suspended five players just days before the match, all accused of staying out late. Borghi said the five were under the influence of alcohol when they arrived for a practice session. The five were widely reported to have been Gonzalo Jara, Arturo Vidal, Jean Beausejour, Carlos Carmona and Jorge Valdivia.
Bopanna-Qureshi storm into Paris Masters final

The seventh seed Indo-Pak pair eked out a 6-3 7-6 (7) win in the semifinals over the third seeded Belarusian-Candian combination in one hour and 27 minutes. On Friday, they had shocked second seeds Michael Llodra and Nenad Zimonjic 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 in the quarter-finals of the euro 2,750,000 event. Bopanna and Qureshi had won Gerry Weber Open at Halle and Stockholm Open early this season. They now face the winner of the other semifinal between French Pair of Julien Benneteau/ Nicolas Mahut and Santiago Gonzalez of Mexico and Kas Christopher of Germany.

'India will Senden sizzles as Tiger Woods clinch the series in second Test' falters at Australian Open
sYDNeY, November 12 (aFp): Former winner John Senden scorched around The Lakes in a nine-under-par 63 to seize the third round lead at the Australian Open as Tiger Woods went backwards on Saturday. The Australian 2006 champion carded an eagle two and seven birdies to charge to the top of the leaderboard on 12-under 204, one shot ahead of compatriot Jason Day. Former world number one Woods had a frustrating day, starting as the overnight leader but falling behind after bogeying his opening three holes and never recovering. The 14-time major winner slumped to threeover 75 to lie six shots behind the lead on six-under 210 heading into Sunday's final round. Australian lefthander Greg Chalmers was in outright third spot on 10-under after a five-under 67, ahead of compatriot Nick O'Hern (69-72-66) and American Nick Watney (6673-68) on nine-under. Senden, 40, who has five professional tournament victories including the 2006 John Deere Classic in Illinois, finished in style with a curling 30-footer downhill at the last hole to cap a magnificent round. "It was a good day, I kicked it off with that birdie at five and holed that pitching wedge from 100m for an eagle at the sixth so that put me in a good frame of mind heading to the turn," Senden said. "I had a good season in America and a good run of tournaments through Malaysia and Shanghai last week, so I came into this tournament with some momentum. "It's our national Open, and it's more special being a winner back in 2006, and

I feel happy and comfortable at this event and I'll see what happens tomorrow." Senden made only 23 putts and missed only three greens in a blistering round, the opposite of Woods. The American made a faltering
start, bogeying his opening three holes to slip to six-under before he holed a four-footer for birdie at the fourth. "I made nothing today. I couldn't get any momentum. Any time I hit the golf ball in there stiff I'd
miss it and it kept happening again and again," Woods said. "The round should have been easy 71 no problem, I played the par-fives bad and I didn't take care of 13, I was probably over-thinking on the greens a little bit. "I need
to play good solid front nine and get some momentum going on tomorrow's back nine, then hopefully I can put myself into position and then I'll be right there." Woods, who has not won since the 2009 Australian Masters and has seen his world ranking tumble to 58, looked to have recaptured some form with Friday's fiveunder 67 but he struggled with his putter into the weekend.Heangrilyswunghisclub when he hit into the trees off the 11th tee, indicating that he was out of sorts. Day, the runner-up at this year's Masters and US Open, hung in behind Senden to claim second spot with a round of five birdies and a bogey at the 15th. He hit a superb approach to the fifth hole and holed a six-foot putt for birdie, made another birdie at the eighth and then sunk a 30-foot birdie putt on the next hole, to a huge roar from the home gallery. Day, who celebrated his 24th birthday Saturday, took the outright lead again at the 13th with his fourth birdie before he was reeled in by Senden. "Obviously, it was a really good day today, a nice solid round and I'm very happy with the position I'm in for tomorrow," Day said. "I'm in the final group, which is nice. It's been a while since I've been back (home) so hopefully I can come back and put on a good show for the crowds tomorrow." Watney was the pick of the American contingent, preparing for next week's President's Cup against the Internationals at Royal Melbourne. World No.12 Watney grabbed eight birdies offset by four bogeys in his 68, while 17th-ranked Bubba Watson had a 72 and is joint eighth with Woods.
KolKata, November 12 (pti): Former India captain Sourav Ganguly is confident that India would wrap up the series against the West Indies in the second Test match at the Eden Gardens. On the sidelines of Bengal's Ranji Trophy preparation, the left-hander who is playing for his home state said, "I've not seen the Test wicket but hope that it will be a favourable result for India and they will win the series 3-0." With all eyes on Sachin Tendulkarforhismuch-anticipated 100th century in international cricket, Ganguly said it's just a matter of time before he gets to the milestone. "He has completed 15,000 Test runs, so the century too will be round the corner." Ganguly did not want to read much into out-offavour India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and said it's premature to compare him with India's latest spin hero R Ashwin. On Ashwin's spectacular debut in the first Test against the West Indies in Delhi, Ganguly said, "it's too early to comment on Ashwin. It's not fair to compare him with Harbhajan." "It's difficult to comment before seeing him (Ashwin) for at least two years. Don't forget that Harbhajan has more than 400 (Test) wickets." Citing example of Narendra Hirwani's dream debut in which he had claimed 16 wickets, Ganguly said: No doubt, Ashwin is bowling well. But remember Hirwani had claimed 16 wickets in his debut Test..." The Chennai off spinner Ashwin had scalped nine wickets, including six in the second innings, in the opening Test to become the Manof-the-Match in his debut Test. Leading 1-0 after a fivewicket win, India will take on the West Indies in second Test at Eden beginning Monday.
Hockey India recognised, Dale Steyn breaks 900 ranking point mark to host Olympic qualifiers
New Delhi, November 12 (pti): Ending the suspense over India’s future in international hockey, the International Hockey Federation, the game’s world governing body on Saturday decided to conduct the Olympic qualifiers in India next year and continue to recognise Hockey India as the national federation for the sport. In a major decision, FIH’s executive board in Lausanne unanimously decided to conduct the Olympic qualifiers and other major hockey tournaments in India, a move which is bound to come as a relief for hockey lovers in the country. It has also decided to recognise Hockey India (HI) as the national federation of the sport. The decision to this effect was conveyed to Sports Minister Ajay Maken by the FIH president Leandro Negre on phone from Lausanne, Switzerland. The Olympic qualifiers are scheduled to be held from February 15 next year. Mr. Maken expressed satisfaction at the decision to conduct the qualifiers in the country and termed it as a “suitable and logical conclusion” to the efforts that
were made by the Ministry, Hockey India and the FIH. With time running out for India to save the hosting rights of next year’s Olympic qualifiers, the FIH had summoned Hockey India to present its case before the world body’s executive council on Saturday. The FIH had asked HI to appear before its executive board next month to discuss issues related to the game’s governance in the country. India had already paid the price for the long-standing power tussle between HI and Indian Hockey Federation over the governance of the game, with the FIH snatching away the hosting rights of this year’s Champions Trophy. The FIH had also warned that India could be banned from international hockey if the issue of governance was not sorted out. HI was represented in the Lausanne meeting by its secretary general Narinder Batra and vice-president Rajeev Mehta. The FIH had made it clear that it was not in favour of two bodies — HI and IHF — running the sport in India as such as it was against its statues and Olympic charter.
Dubai, November 12 (pti): South African pacer Dale Steyn has become only the 20th bowler to break the 900-point mark in the ICC PlayerRankingsforTestbowlers after claiming six scalps in hisside'seight-wicketwinover Australia on Friday. Steyn began the in Cape Town Test on 899 ratings points and earned three ratings points for his efforts of 4-55 and 2-23 to become only the second South Africa bowler after Shaun Pollock to achieve the rare distinction. In rankings terms, 900 or more ratings points means a player is truly outstanding, a benchmark for the very top bowlers. "It is very special for me to join the 900-point club. There are a lot of world-class players in that region and it is an honour to be in their company," a delighted Steyn said. "When I go out and bowl I hardly ever think of the rankings, for me it is about representing my country and giving my best for the team so sometimes it means a lot to receive the recognition." At 902 ratings points, Steyn is 17th in the all-time ratings list with an excellent chance of moving further up that list provided he puts up another stellar performance in the second and

final Test which starts in Johannesburg next Thursday. Steyn has been holding the number one slot in the list for current players since the Durban Test against England in December 2009, although his first time at the top of that table came in April 2008. In 47 impressive Tests, the 28-year-old has taken 244 wickets. Such is Steyn's dominance in the bowling rankings that second-placed James Anderson of England trails him by 91 ratings points, while his team-mate Morne Morkel, who is the
second best South Africa bowler in third position, is 126 ratings points behind. Steyn lies in seventh position in the ODI bowlers' list and 16th position in the Twenty20 International. Among others, Australia's Shane Watson has earned a career-best ranking of 10th, improving 15 places, after returning with a figure of 5-2-17-5 in South Africa's first innings score of 96. Debutant Vernon Philander, one of the architects of Australia's second innings collapse for 47 with figures of 7-3-15-5, has en-
tered the bowlers' rankings in 49th position. In the ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen, all three batsmen - Graeme Smith, Hashim Amla and Michael Clarke - who scored centuries in a sensational Cape Town Test have made upward moves. South Africa captain Smith, who scored 37 and 101 not out, has climbed eight places to seventh spot, Amla's score of three and 112 have lifted him four places to eighth position while Clarke lies in 17th position after gaining five places following his scores of 151 and two. At the top, Jacques Kallis has been replaced by Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara after the South African slipped seven ratings points behind him after scores of nought and two not out in the just-concluded Test. Other batsmen losing ground include Mike Hussey in 11th (down six places), AB de Villiers in 13th (slipping three spots), Shane Watson in 30th (dropping four slots), Ricky Ponting in 34th (down two positions), Brad Haddin in 42nd (falling five places), Mark Boucher in 48th (down three spots) and Phil Hughes in 53rd (slipping four places).
Khan happy with players Abu Dhabi GP: Vettel equals Mansell pole record Mohsin handling of spot-fixing scandal
abu Dhabi, November 12 (aFp): Newlycrowned double world champion Sebastian Vettel drew level with Nigel Mansell in the Formula One record books on Saturday when he delivered a stunning fastest lap to secure pole position for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The 26-year-old German steered his Red Bull car round the Yas Marina circuit in dazzling fashion to create a dramatic finale and steal pole from Lewis Hamilton, who will start second on the grid alongside him for Sunday’s 55-laps day-night race. It was Vettel’s 14th pole this year and the 29th of his career, in his 80th Grand Prix. Briton Mansell reeled off his record 14polesinasingleseasonwith the Williams team in his drivers’ title winning year of 1992. Hamilton was second quickest ahead of his English compatriot and McLaren team-mate Jenson Button
with Australian Mark Webber fourth in the second Red Bull. Two-time champion Spaniard Fernando Alonso qualified fifth ahead of his Ferrari team-mate Brazilian Felipe Massa. The two Mercedes of Germans Nico Rosberg and seven-time championMichaelSchumacherwere seventh and eighth ahead of the two Force Indias of German Adrian Sutil and British rookie Paul Di Resta. A delighted Vettel screamed with joy as he took pole. "Yes, that’s it, thank you boys," he shouted while back in the paddock former Beatle Paul McCartney admitted he had become hooked by the thrill of the moment. "Now I know why George (Harrison) loved it so much." The first part of qualifying began with track temperatures falling with the sun, from over 40 degrees Celsius to around 32 degrees, a change in conditions that improved tyre du-

rability and performance. As in the final free session, when he was fastest, Hamilton also continued cutting time as he topped the times ahead of Webber and Button, with Vettel fourth.
Unfortunately, it was not such a happy session for veteran Brazilian Rubens Barrichello who was unable to clock a lap in his Williams and will start from the back end of the grid. Schumacher scraped
through after struggling until he switched to soft tyres for his final faster laps when Massa also took a set of softer tyres to ensure he made progress. The second mini-session Q2 saw Hamilton continuing
his coruscating form, clocking a lap of 1:38.434 before a red flag curtailed the action when the base of a plastic bollard landed on the circuit. This left him clear of Vettel in second place with Alonso third as dusk ushered in darkness and the dazzling glare of the track’s floodlighting system. It also left several teams without a spare set of soft tyres for the remaining qualifying laps. Schumacher, using soft tyres again, squeezed into the top ten shoot-out, behind the two Mercedespowered Force India drivers, but it soon boiled down to a fight between McLaren and Red Bull at the front. On their first hot laps, Hamilton was again fastest in 1:38.704, just four-hundredths of a second quicker than Vettel with Webber third ahead of Button and Alonso, but it was all so close that nobody could feel sure of a prime starting spot.
Dubai, November 12 (aFp): Pakistan coach Mohsin Khan on Saturday told AFP he was satisfied with his team's ability to put behind them the spot-fixing scandal which ended in three of their former team-mates being handed down prison sentences in England. Former Test captain Salman Butt and pacemen Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer were sent to prison over their roles in fixing parts of the Lord's Test against England last year. Khan agreed the scandal could have been distracting for his team during their series against Sri Lanka here in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). "The spot-fixing saga was sad," Khan told AFP. "I made sure that all the boys should stay away from it mentally and I am glad that the boys responded very well and are performing well."
Pakistan won the threeTest series 1-0 and went 1-0 up in the first of five matches by registering an eight wicket win on Friday. The second match will be played in Dubai on Monday. Mohsin, 56, said he was satisfied with his team's performance. "I am 90 percent satisfied with the team's performance and since there is always room for improvement we are looking for that in all the departments of the game," said Khan, a former opener who is also the current chief selector. Khan said the squad had shown responsibility and character. "The best thing about this set of players is that they are assuming their responsibilities and they know that playing for the country is the biggest honour for them," said Khan, who has also been retained as coach for the Bangladesh tour.

Kim Kardashian is still in love with Reggie Bush
K
im Kardashian's former publicist claims the reality star has never got over her ex Reggie Bush - and that her marriage to Kris Humphries was a sham. Jonathan Jaxson - who worked with the reality star between 2007 and 2009 - has renewed claims Kim's nuptials to NBA star Humphries were a publicity stunt. Speaking on Good Day LA this morning, Jaxson said: 'Two weeks prior to her wedding she knew it was not something she wanted to do. 'Unfortunately they were obligated to honour contracts [with the E! network which had TV rights] otherwise they would have owed a lot of people a lot of money.' Earlier this week during an interview with New York's Elvis Duran and the Morning Show, Jaxson said: 'She's never gotten over [her ex Reggie Bush].' Kim, 31, and 26-year-old NFL star Reggie were the subject of repeated engagement claims throughout their relationship. The couple dated for around two years before initially splitting in July 2009. Two months later they got back together before ending their relationship again in March last year. Jaxson claimed he would often help Kim stage publicity stunts when he worked with her. He continued: 'I staged several of the moments that the world has Menguseü Suokhrie performs at the flag-in- seen of her, such as a ring that we ceremony of “Discover Nagaland on Bicycle” on alleged was from Reggie Bush.' Big B slams Aishwarya’s false delivery news!

hen the entire nation is waiting with baited breath for Abhishek and Aishwarya’s firstborn, Big B had to literally clarify the news about his yet to be born grandchild when he started receiving congratulatory messages on Twitter since November 11. Apparently, Amitabh Bachchan posted on his Twitter page yesterday, “Getting congratulatory messages on Aishwarya delivering a boy!!! Guess they know more than even she does !! False and incorrect news.” When Aishwarya was spotted at the Seven Hills Hospital in Mumbai on November 10, rumours were rife that the actress was being admitted for delivery. However, her spokesperson reportedly denied the news and tweeted, “Aishwarya is still at home, please do not believe or spread rumours.” Aishwarya was at the Seven Hills Hospital just for a routine check-up on November 10.
- which Jaxson claimed is identical to the one Kris proposed to Kim with. Jaxson added that there is no doubt Kim and Kris, 26, made a packet during their time together. Despite Kim's mother Kris
Jenner insisting her daughter 'didn't make a dime out of the wedding - responding to reports the couple netted a whopping $17.9m - Jaxson begs to differ. He told the radio show on Wednesday: 'They had a lot of contracts, they had endorsements. To say they weren't paid is a lot of foolish garbage.' Kim is yet to respond to her former publicist's claims. But she has publicly denied her marriage to Kris - who she filed for divorce from just 72 days after the Montecito nuptials was fake. 'Anyone that would get married for a TV show, it's just, you know, ridiculous,' she said. 'It's just sad that I even have to defend that.' Meanwhile, it has emerged that Humphries is using Minnesota-based lawyer Lee Hutton to end his marriage with Kim. Hutton represents a lot of sports stars, although does not tend to deal with divorces, according to TMZ. But as the divorce is quite straight forward, it should not be an issue. Kim and Kris are not disputing who gets what in the division of assets due to the prenup being put in place. The divorce should be finalised six months from the date Kim filed - the minimum time required by law. Kim is currently in Atlanta shooting for a cameo role in the Tyler Perry movie, The Marriage Counsellor and was spotted on set again today for her last day of filming. Yesterday her mother Jenner jetted out to visit her daughter for an overnight stay before flying back to LA today.
'Don 2' in legal trouble
W
ith the SRK starrer Don 2 - The Chase Continues all set to release this Christmas, Nariman Films, the producers of the Amitabh Bachchan's 1978 hit, Don, aren't too pleased. According to them, they had only given Excel Entertainment the right to remake their movie. And since the producers of the remake weren't given the rights to make a sequel, Nariman Films has sent them a legal notice and is suing them for copyright infringement. Confirming that a legal notice has been sent to Excel Entertainment, Red Chillies Entertainment, Reliance Entertainment, Farhan Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani, Shah Rukh Khan and Baba Arts, Digvijay Chopra states, "The remake rights were given only for the film Don - The Chase Begins Again, starring Shah Rukh Khan, by an agreement, which expired in 2009. Thereafter, they never renewed it or even take any prospective rights from Nariman films." While Baba Arts was not involved in the production, the advocates point out they had originally acquired the rights, which were then sold to Excel Entertainment for Rs 1.25 crore in 2005, with the knowledge of Nariman Films. However, Nariman Films has now come to know from various sources that the advocates they first consulted are on the legal panel of the opposite party. Now the original producers have approached another law firm and have learnt that the case of infringement, undue influence and fraud, is clearly evident in this case. Chopra and Bansal reiterated that they will be taking legal action against the makers of Don 2 - The Chase Continues at the High Court as well as criminal courts for necessary relief.

Jenson Button brushes off Briatore praise
McLaren Mercedes driver Jenson Button of Britain steers his car during the third free practice at the Yas Marina racetrack, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on Nov.12. The Emirates Formula One Grand Prix will take place on Sunday. (AP Photo)
Abu DHAbI, November 12 (AgeNCIes): : Jenson Button brushed off rare praise from former boss Flavio Briatore at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix just as McLaren team mate Lewis Hamilton welcomed surprisingly warm words from onetime foe Fernando Alonso. The flamboyant Briatore was Button`s boss at Benetton/
Renault in 2001 and 2002, and the Italian has made clear subsequently that he did not rate the Briton. Even during Button`s 2009 championship year with Brawn, Briatore compared him to a concrete bollard. Briatore told Italian radio last week however that he had been wrong in his assessment and, with the English
driver currently second overall and ahead of Hamilton, had not realised quite how good Button was. "Everyone is entitled to their opinion," Button told British reporters. "Flavio is very outspoken. I suppose it`s nice for him to realise his wrong decisions and to turn around and say that," he added. "Up until this year he has al-
ways been negative, even when I won the world championship, even last year he said the results I was getting was down to luck. So it`s nice, but unnecessary. "It really doesn`t mean much to me. I read it and it made me smile, then I forgot it." Hamilton, fastest in Friday practice at Yas Marina, found himself the subject of positive comments
To have got Sachin Tendulkar out is a great achievement: Edwards
KoLKATA, November 12 (PTI): He has grown up admiring the genius of Sachin Tendulkar but now that Fidel Edwards is bowling to him, the West Indian pacer says he would do all he can to ensure that the Indian batting icon does not get his 100th international ton against his side in the ongoing Test series. The speedster, who trapped Tendulkar leg before for 7 in the first innings of the opening Test in Delhi, said tongue-incheek, "I would want him to score nought for the rest of the series." Edwards took his 150th scalp in the form of Tendulkar in the Delhi Test and said it was a big achievement for him to bowl at the veteran Indian cricketer. "Sachin Tendulkar is a great player, you can't deny that. As a youngster having watched him on television and coming to bowl against him now is a great achievement for me, and to have got him out as well. We have to stop him from scoring runs against us," he said. Fresh from a successful Bangladesh tour where the 29-year-old bagged eight wickets in their 1-0 win in the two-Test series, Edwards said, "I am very attacking as a bowler and it's important for us to get him out, especially on these wickets." three-Test series against India, Edwards said it would be a tough proposition to bounce back. "It's going to be very tough for us as a team, playing against the No. 2 team in the world and seeing that they are one-up." But Edwards said the Caribbeans have a few positives from the first Test in which they pushed India on the backfoot after taking a 95run first innings lead. "But as you saw, we pushed them in the first Test, we did well as a unit and fought well. We have come here to play good cricket and hopefully we can push them again and you never know what's going to happen," Edwards said. The pacer said it's really difficult on Indian slow wickets so the plan is to get the odd bouncers. "You have to be smart on your feet. It's going to be hard on wickets where the ball will keep low. Hopefully you can get one to fly and that puts doubts in the batsman's mind," Edwards, who will play his 50th Test Monday, said. "The wickets have kept pretty low. It's been pretty hard, playing against Dravid, Sachin, Laxman to an extent. These guys are great, these guys have been scoring runs all over. "They are playing on home ground. So it's going to be very tough.
from Alonso to Italian reporters. The Spaniard, who had replaced Button at Renault in 2003 and was Hamilton`s team mate in a tortured 2007 season at McLaren, hailed the Briton as the only rival he felt could win races even when his car was not the best and also singled him out as a man to watch in winter testing.
"I`m blown away that Fernando is so positive towards me, despite my season and also despite the differences we`ve had," Hamilton told television reporters. "I think our friendship and the respect we have for each other has got a lot stronger. It`s nice to see that coming out because I have only ever said he is

one of the best drivers if not the best driver here. "It`s nice to know that I`ve got support from some drivers." Alonso`s comments may not go down so well with his own Ferrari team mate Felipe Massa, who has clashed repeatedly with Hamilton on track this season and is barely on speaking terms with the Briton.
