After introducing the Nagaland Women Reservation Bill in a gushing act of chivalry towards the fairer sex, the DAN government seems to have gotten more than what it bargained for. The recent judgment of the Kohima Bench of Gauhati High Court directing Nagaland Government to conduct the long-due election to the municipal and town councils before January 20, 2012, along with 33% reservation of seats for women, has left the government in a fix. Implementation of women quota in the coming municipal elections will prove to be a herculean task taking into accounts the technicalities and modalities to be involved in a first time exercise. Nagaland state also cannot turn to the Centre for direction as the women bill is yet to become a national act. The indications and comments doing the round is the state government will not be able to meet the deadline set by the high court on holding of municipal polls. Besides, with assembly election slated for early 2013, the NPF-led DAN

government cannot ignore the underlying current of opposition coming from various male-dominated tribal hohos and even party workers, against women reservation. When contacted, NPF president and minister of Urban Development, Dr. Shurhozelie, on Wednesday appeared non-committal. “I am yet to discuss the matter with the department officers. Till yesterday my office has not received the copy of the Court’s judgment order. But as far as my department (Urban Development) is concerned, we are ready,” the minister said. The Municipal Affairs Cell under Urban Development supervises functions of the municipal and town councils. The minster also disclosed that earlier during his visit to different districts and after taking the views of various tribal hohos and organizations, his recommendation was that women should be given 33% reservation in town and municipal councils, “not through election but through nomination.” “But before that (recommendation) was agreed upon by the state cabinet, the women had gone to court,” he added.

On the other hand, former chief minister and senior Congress legislator, KL Chishi expressed reservation about the bill. “I have my reservation. The women reservation bill has not been passed at the national level. When rumours of the bill that it was to be become a central act was going on, DAN government wanted to take mileage by prematurely introducing the bill in the state assembly,” Chishi said. The Congress legislator also said that after DAN government passed the women reservation bill, the latter could not implement the same and therefore had to appoint caretaker municipal councils. According to Chishi, since the Gauhati High Court has already given its ruling, the DAN government is left with two options; either to appeal to the Supreme Court against the high court ruling or go for amendment of the bill. On women quota Chishi said, “For Nagaland we don’t have any discrimination and women are free to contest 100% in any election, so where is the need of 33% reservation? It is demeaning. Instead enjoy 100%.” Continued on pa ge 5

It was a moment of epiphany during her eight year working as community organizer for District Urban Development Agency (DUDA) that N. Esther Longchar from Aonukpu village, decided to quit her job and follow her dream. In her early thirties, Esther jokes that maybe it was midlife crisis that finally capitulated her to be daring enough to leave a secured government job and delve into the fashion business. “At a point, I grew tired of my life, tired of my job. I had always wanted to start my own production and be my own boss,” Esther says. It’s been two years since Esther quit the job, and now she is all ready to set forth on her independent venture. She has not an ounce of regret for quitting her job, when the craze of winning a government job is all around her in society. In fact, she says she was glad she had the courage to answer to her calling in life and says, “I’m going to have a beautiful life from now on.”

The fearless lady quit her government job to launch Ramp Magazine

N. Esther Longchar from Aonukpu village will be launching Nagaland’s first fashion magazine “Ramp Magazine” on November 11, 2011. The first Volume will hit stands from January 2012. (Morung Photo)

Esther owns a shop “100 Oaks” in Nuton Bosti, Dimapur, where she will be launching Nagaland’s first fashion magazine “Ramp Magazine” on November 11, to coincide with her birthday. But it’s not all guts and glory. Esther aims to give

back to society through her own ways and means. She has created 100 Oaks with the intention of fostering a meet point for anybody related to the fashion business. It could be organizations, photographers, models, designers etc. a sort of fashion lounge.

100 Oaks will also showcase clothes from local designers and from the Northeast. This first time entrepreneur draws her inspiration from her 82 year old mother who is a cancer survivor. Esther also announces that she is dedicating Ramp Magazine to her mother who has always been a lover of fine clothes and even though long ago there were no training she possessed her own sense of fashion, and even made clothes for Esther and her six other siblings. Just like the saying, “When you dream, dream big,” Esther says that she wants Ramp Magazine to hit the global market in future years. “We don’t have fashion magazine available in Nagaland and so I feel it’s a nice concept and I hope the fashion fraternity, business organizations, government and the public will support me in this venture,” she conveys. Ramp will feature exclusive fashion coverage on fashion events, top models, fresh faces and designers. It will also work to elevate with the latest collections and sharp trends. Continued on pa ge 5

Indonesia, and Vietnam,” Burns said. India’s outreach is growing toward a comprehensive vision for the East Asia regiona “Look East” policy that is becoming an “Act East” policy, he said. “That’s why, last year, our two countries launched a strategic dialogue on the Asia-Pacific to ensure that the world’s two largest democracies pursue strategies that reinforce one another,” Burns said. Hoping that India will join the US in working to strengthen Asia’s many regional institutions, he said: “An architecture of free trade and investment that connects India to Southeast and East Asia will

have a profound impact on global trade and economic growth.” “And let me explicitly state that the 21st century Asia-Pacific we seek is one in which India, the United States, and China all enjoy good relations,” Burns said. “Whatever our differences, we know that, as this century advances, fewer and fewer global problems will be solvable without constructive cooperation amongst our three great countries.” The US, he said, was also reaching out to build new partnerships across the region “to build networks of cooperation that will create a peaceful and prosperous Asia-Pacific.”

HIV and AIDS prevalence rate alarming

Morung Express News Dimapur | November 5

The prevalence rate of HIV and AIDS in the state stands at an alarming 78 % i.e., 7 to 8 persons out of every 1000 people is infected with the disease as compared to the national average where only 3 to 4 persons out of every 1000 people is infected. Disclosing this during a sensitization programme on HIV and AIDS held at Signal Angami Basti, Saturday, Dr. Hutoka M.O. i/c ART Centre District Hospital Dimapur also put the number of persons detected with the disease to 12, 400 in the state. He, however, said only 7,500 persons have been registered as many people were yet to come forward for treatment despite already knowing their status. He said one of the reasons why the drug administered to the patients has less effect was the late arrival of the patients. Dr. Hutoka encouraged the peo-

ple to come forward for blood testing and early treatment after detection of the disease. “If they come late then they do not get the full benefits of the drugs,” he said and added that many patients were reporting only towards the later stage of the disease. He said 70 patients came to ART Centre Dimapur last month out of which 48 of them came in very late. Dr. Hutoka said that there were over 3, 500 people infected with the disease in Dimapur as per record and that only 1,500 were undergoing treatment. In many instances, it has been found that people who have Tuberculosis were also infected with the disease and viceversa, Dr. Hutoka said revealing that TB was one of the leading causes of death in HIV patients. He disclosed that 127 people have died of the disease in Dimapur since the establishment of the Anti-Retroviral Therapy Centre at the District Hospital

could avail the service free of cost. He said the person has to take the medication within 72 hours of exposure to reduce the risk of HIV infection. However, Dr. Hutoka said that for the medication to be most effective, the patient has to begin the treatment within 1 or 2 hours of infection.

Transmission route Sexual intercourse - 92% Infected needle - 3% Mother to child - 4% Unknown reason (the patient not disclosing the route of infection) - 1%

in 2006. He said those who died of the disease were undergoing HIV-attacking medications but came late. Of the 127 deaths, majority of them were within the age group of 25 – 49 and only

few were below 4 – 5 years. Stating that HIV and AIDS infection does not have any age bar, Dr. Hutoka said that a person as old as 75 years was infected with the disease as per record.

Bhupen Hazarika, master balladeer who touched millions of hearts GuWAHATI, NOvEMbEr 5 (IANS): Music lovers would have been denied the magic of Bhupen Hazarika's hauntingly powerful voice in songs like "Dil hoom hoom kare" and "Ganga behti ho kyun" if he had gone ahead and become a lawyer like he initially planned. But destiny willed otherwise. Hazarika, who died of multiple organ failure in a Mumbai hospital Saturday at age 86, was a master balladeer and touched millions with the passion of his songs. He was one of India's oldest performing singers who entertained music lovers all over for more than seven decades his songs are at times like letters from home, had revolutionary promises, sometimes angry, but always had that soothing touch in his baritone voice. From Tokyo to Mumbai and Alaska to Assam, those who heard Hazarika could never ever forget his powerful renditions.

"When I go to Japan, students of music want me to sing 'Manuhe Manuhar Babe' (For Man). When I reach California people say you are our Paul (Robeson), please sing 'We are in the same boat brothers'," the legendary musician told IANS in an interview in 2006 just before a stage performance in Guwahati. It was mid-way during that stage performance that Hazarika suffered a mild stroke and later had to undergo a bypass surgery. But the cardiac arrest failed to deter his spirit - Bhupen Da, as he was endearingly addressed by one and all, continued singing until about two years ago when his failing health stopped him from composing new numbers. "I always think I am young," Hazarika again told this writer while celebrating his 84th birthday last year. "I don't feel like retiring as music has no retirement age. Throughout my life I have been trying to inter-

pret Assam and India to the outside world through my songs," Hazarika said. He began singing when he was just 10 years old and churned out hits after hits numbering more than 1,500 songs until his health failed about two years ago. At 13, he sang about building a new Assam and a new India - the lyrics were his own, very powerful and contemporary. A singer, lyricist, actor, and a filmmaker, Hazarika was born in 1926 in one of Assam's remotest corners - Sadiya in the eastern district of Tinsukia. He grew up in the northern town of Tezpur and later went to Banaras Hindu University and completed his graduation and post-graduation in Political Science. He studied with an aim to pursue a career as a lawyer in Assam, but destiny made him a mass-based singer. In 1948, Hazarika went to the US on a scholarship to study

Bhupen Hazarika

Mass Communication at Columbia University, New York. It was there that he got soaked in American folk music and later on that influenced him to bring in the folk elements in his songs - although he mostly sang the folk tunes of Assam. Always adorned with the trademark Nepali cap, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner's passion for music was unrelent-

ing. Hazarika had composed soulful music for films like "Rudaali", "Saaz" and "Gajagamini". Not just singing, Hazarika dabbled in politics as well - his remarkable popularity brought him to the Assam Legislative Assembly as an Independent member in 1967, where he was solely responsible for installing the first state owned film studio of its kind ever in Guwahati, the Jyoti Chitraban. He again tried his hand in politics - this time as a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate for the Guwahati Lok Sabha seat in 2004. He was, however, unsuccessful and lost the election. Hazarika's personal life is as chequered as his professional life. For close to 40 years, Hazarika had been in a live in relationship with filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi. Kalpana Lajmi was just 17 when she fell in love with Hazarika who was 45 at that time. When the music maestro turned 80, he offered to marry

her, but Lajmi turned down the offer saying the 'wife' tag was unnecessary to their relationship. 'Bhupso (Kalpana endearingly addressed Hazarika as Bhupso) did offer to marry me when he was around 80, but I said no,' Lajmi, told this writer in an interview. "May be he wanted to give me the status of wife, but I was not interested. For me, the relationship, the trust and the respect that we share with each other are more important than marriage." Lajmi, best known for her woman-oriented films like 'Rudaali', 'Daman', 'Ek Pal', 'Chingaari' and 'Darmiyaan', says she met Hazarika through her uncle. "We lived together for the past more than 40 years, although my mother never accepted the relationship, nor did Bhupso's family members, barring Manisha (Bhupen's younger brother Jayanta's wife)." In Lajmi's own words, Bhu-

pen Hazarika had always been the darling of many beautiful women. "Bhupso had a lot of beautiful women in his life," Lajmi said. Hazarika's estranged wife Priyam is settled in Canada and their son Tej is settled in the US. Hazarika had produced, directed, composed and sang for Assamese language films like 'Era Batar Sur' (1956), 'Shakuntala' (1960), 'Pratidhwani' (1964) and 'Lotighoti' (1967). So was Lajmi able to make a difference in Hazarika's life and career? "I think I'm 95 percent responsible for Bhupso's career flight. He was an intoxicant (alcoholic) and I helped him get rid of that habit." She devoted her entire time and energy nursing him ever since he became bedridden some three years ago. Hazarika might have passed away - but his soulful music coupled with his powerful lyrics would continue to entertain and capture the imagination of generations to come.

Solution must be just and NAPTC 50th Attestation Parade KLA declares unilateral ceasefire honorable: NSCN/GPRN 440 personnel DIMAPur, NOvEMbEr 5 (MExN): For the convenience of administration, the Zeliangrong Region of NSCN/ GPRN has been divided into three regionMakuilongdi Zeliangrong Region, Ashalu Zeliangrong Region and Zailad Zeliangrong Region. Makuilongdi Zeliangrong Region was inaugurated at Tenning by V.Horam , Kilonser, Ministry of Internal Security, NSCN/ GPRN on November 3, a note from the MIP informed. In his address, V. Horam praised the Zeliangrong people for their contribution towards the “national cause.” He said they are one among thepioneersinthemovement that began under the leadership of Haipou Jadonang, whose campaign against the British invasion of Nagalim left foot prints in the pages of Naga history in "golden letters." Horam paid tribute to those who gave their lives for the love of motherland. Horam pointed out that the creation of Zeliangrong region was necessitated by the huge population and vastness of the area spread out into Assam, Nagaland and Manipur states. He dispelled confusion and doubt, and assured the Zeliangrong people that it is never the intention of the government to either disintegrate the Zeliangrong region as a whole nor is it designed to disturb the solidarity of the people. But it is a sincere effort of the government to devolve more power to Zeliangrong region. Touching on the IndoNaga political solution Horam said it is on the edge of finalization and NSCN has taken stand that the solution must be based on the "political and historical rights of the Nagas which is just and honorable.”

On the Naga reconciliation issue, he said it is the decision of the NSCN/GPRN not to leave out anyone from the purview of the Indo-Naga solution. For that reason, he said, they have reconciled with Gen. (Retd) Khole led GPRN/NSCNandBrig,(Retd) Singnya led NNC at the highest level meeting facilitated by the Forum for Naga Reconciliation(FNR), and agreed to form “one government”wherebymodalitiesare being discussed. He expressed gratitude to the FNR for their sincere effort in bringing warring groups together and closer towards a common vision. He said all other groups should also listen to the clarion call of the people and fall in line while the best opportunity that prevails, He mentioned that the government also fully acknowledges the Zeliangrong Elders" Forum of Peace Brokers” for initiating peace among the Naga groups operating in Zeliangrong area. On the issue of Manipur, he minced no words to point out that the communal policies of the Meitei-majority Manipur state government towards the Nagas in particular and the tribal in general should be effectively countered. He said the diabolical move to carve out new districts out of Naga territories such as Jiribam, Sadar Hills and others is a deliberate attempt to pitch one community against the other so as to fish in troubled water. Guest of honour, MK Winning, Dy. Kilonser Kilo Affairs assured that the cadres under Makuilongdi Zeliangrong shall stand by the principle and constitutional integrity of the NSCN/ GPRN to protect and defend the people and the cause.

Nokia to target Govt unlikely to roll back petrol price hike Petrol price hike fuels protests youth with Asha guwahaTi, November 5 (ageNcies): The state witnessed a volley of protests from all corners immediately after oil companies hiked petrol price by Rs 1.80 a litre once again to offset the fall in rupee. The Federation of Industry & Commerce of North Eastern Region (FINER) suggested the government to prepare a petrol price stabilization mechanism to check such rise in future. While the Kamrup Chamber of Commerce (KCC) asked the state government to take immediately steps to comfort the state, former chief minister Prafulla Mahanta sought curbing of such rise in price. "There must be a petrol price stabilization mechanism in the country to control frequent rise in petrol price. The government should think of a long-term solution. It affects inflation," said R S Joshi, the chairman of Finer. The KCC asked the state government to introduce gas-based transportation system to minimize public apathy. "If the Centre can't control petrol price, then the Assam government should introduce remedial government sources have said that a roll back is unlikely as there is not much political measures such as gas- based transportation system as the state has plenty of natural gas heat at present.

loNDoN, November 5 (ageNcies): Last week in London, Nokia chief executive Stephen Elop launched two messaging phones - Asha 200 and Asha 201- aimed primarily at the Indian mass market. Asha 200 is a dual-SIM handset, while Asha 201 is a single SIM device. The erstwhile market leader in the cell market has been struggling a little lately with the combined losses of 436 million euros, or $606 million, in the second and third quarters. It had also had to down size its work force globally by 18%. But Nokia India MD D Shivakumar says the company's profile is looking up in India. Although data is unavailable, sale of Nokia handsets have roughly quadrupled in the third quarter, he says. With the Asha phones, Nokia is hoping to capture the next generation of a billion young users, who would like to use their mobiles to connect with the Net. Blanca Juti, vice-president, Nokia Mobile Phones Marketing, says the phones are meant to catch the fancy of the 25-year-old, who wants to stay connected on the move. Though both phones are feature devices rather than smart phones they can still down load Java applications in addition to the ones built into the handsets. Pre-installed software includes a web browser, a music player, and networking support. "Bulk penetration in the Indian market will happen in the next three or four years, and the Asha phones are the right vehicles of change," says Shivakumar. The London event's focus though was on the launch of the smart windows phone Lumia 800 and Lumia 710. The company is making a rather late entry into a field dominated by smarties like Google, Apple and Samsung. Nokia's share of the global smart phone market has fallen by nearly half, to 15.5% in September from 27.5% in December.

New Delhi, November 5 (PTi): A roll-back in the steep Rs 1.80 a litre hike in petrol price is unlikely, government sources said on Saturday. “As of now there isn't much political heat. The rollback looks unlikely,” said a source. Meanwhile, hitting out at the ruling UPA alliance partners such as Trinamool Congress, who have denounced the hike and threat-

ened to withdraw support from the government, a Cabinet Minister said, Mamata Banerjee was part of the Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) that in June of 2010 had decided to deregulate or free petrol prices. “She (Mamata Banerjee) had not attended that EGoM meeting of June 25, 2010, but her consent was taken. She continued in the

Union Cabinet after the decision was made and did not threaten even once to withdraw support,” the minister said, adding that the decision to hike petrol price was in line with the empowerment that government has given to oil companies last year. “She (Mamta Banerjee) is a compulsive populist. When we have alliance like them we don't

need opposition BJP,” he added. Sources said the state-owned oil companies took the decision to hike prices on their own and were not required to consult anyone in the government. They added that the government does not want to become unpopular, but sometimes it is forced to take unpopular decisions. “It is not that the govern-

resources," said KCC head Mahabir Jain. Added Mahanta, "Petrol price has skyrocketing after the UPA government took charge at the Centre. It's totally against public interest. Already inflation is making common people's life miserable. At this juncture, hike in petrol price is a huge blow to commoners." P Roy, the president of Guwahati Retaliers' Association, said, "It seems the government has surrendered to the corporate and capitalists. Despite people's resentment over the petrol price hike, the government is surprisingly mum," said P Roy, president of the Association. Earlier on Thursday night, long queues of vehicles forced petrol pumps here to fuel vehicles till midnight as city residents looked like in a hurry to fill their vehicles' tanks before the hike in price. "I had no choice but to fill my car's tank before midnight to save some bucks," said Sanjay, a city resident. This is the second hike in petrol process in less than two moths. "In Guwahati, the present price of petrol (normal) costs Rs 72.31 and Rs. 74.81 for the premium range," said Suresh Jain, the manager of a petrol pump in the city.

Naga Rice Hotel Union extends support and express concern The Naga Rice Hotels Union extends full support to the initiative undertaken by the Naga Council Dimapur, in collaboration with other Organizations, Administrations, Unions and Civil base Societies in the move to curb the increasing spate of anti-social activities in Dimapur. In an effort to fight for common aspirations and healthy societal growth, the Union joint the collective force, support and participate in the “People’s Campaign against anti social activities” held recently in Dimapur on 29th October 2011 with an aim to foster harmony and create feasible environment in our society. While appreciating the plan and objective, the Union express our concern and apprehensions with regard to massive imposition of taxes, donations and other restrictions by various agencies/organization to the Hoteliers in Eros lane, MST Road and Blue Hill Line, Dimapur. Whereas we are abiding with all criteria laid down by the Municipal Council/Govt. Agencies such using commercial cooking gas, hygienic food, quality of services etc. why all representative of the agencies- DB,GB Union, DMC, Police etc, first rush to our area for any checking and actions. What does all this representative do to the other commercial hotels in other part of the city of which many of them are run by non-locals? (For instant, hotels nearby an office of a concern authority). Do they use commercial appliances as per the municipal norms? Are their services hygienic and satisfactory? Are their service boys & girls medically fit in such hotels? Sad but true, it is a question of task undone. The concern authorities who has the sole responsibility to check all functionaries in the city simply takes advantage and grab the same opportunity again & again at the same area for mere sake without validating what is happening at the other side of the city. Also, various underground groups & agencies impose heavy taxes and even threatened with dire consequences if their demands are not fulfilled. They hardly know the hardship impede on us due to all taxes, donations & actions. They barely notice how we manage our internal assessment such as trade licences, rent, children education, family maintenances, medical policies etc. and to our dismay; they even hardly acknowledge our contribution. Every right thinking Leader, National Workers should learn to appreciate the deeds and contributions of the common people if one ever dreams of a civilized and prosperous society. No doubt we belong to the society as the society is to us, we assure to extend our support and corporation in all aspects, but when things goes beyond the level of general understanding and principal, we the common people bears the burnt and suffer the most. Therefore, we humbly request the concern authorities to streamline plans and policies not drastically but strategically so that the ultimate objective benefits the welfare and interest of everyone. he quantum of punishment for the Pakistani trio of Salman Butt, Mohd Asif and Mohd Amir, along with bookmaker Mazhar Mazeed has been announced. The guilty have also been given a chance to appeal against the verdict. Almost all of them have applied for the same. This sordid saga of fixing is surely going to become a horrible tale for the future generation of cricket lovers; joining the list of other such acts that have destroyed the pristine nature of sports. What this incident has done is that it has opened a can of worms. The nature of spot-fixing makes it difficult for anyone to be even remotely aware of any unnatural shifts in a game. This is due to the fact that most of us are more concerned with the bigger picture-the result. Owing to the nature of a cricket match, there are various vulnerable elements that can be, without affecting the overall result, manipulated by bookmakers for making personal gains. For sceptics and fans alike this has forced them to rewind their memories to the many magical moments they`ve witnessed over the years while watching a game that was turned on its head by a divine act of a player. It seems quite logical now to question their sanctity. As has been revealed from reports over the past few months, fixing in cricket is not just a sub-continental malice. So, this puts unwittingly every other match played till date under the microscope of suspicion. It is to be clearly understood that this judgment should not be misconstrued as the final nail in the coffin that supposedly houses corruption. Nor would the upcoming ones be able to achieve this utopian dream of turning cricket corruption-free. The reason is simple, as long as there is a pied piper and some vulnerable rats, he will find them and manipulate them for his own purposes. Mazhar Mazeed is certainly just the tip of the iceberg. He is just one unfortunate pawn who was caught after someone from Pakistan cricket`s management tipped a reporter about his involvement in fixing. Weeding out corruption from cricket is a long overdue process that should have taken shape long time ago but for inefficiencies of the individual cricket boards proving to be a teething impediment. Pakistan Cricket Board is a mess in itself and the country as a whole is torn between terrorism and economic backwardness. This adds to the many reasons why the ugly head of fixing rears its head too often in Pakistan. Another cause is the fact that many of its cricketers come from a poor economic background or they have faced hardships during the years that define their future career paths. Cricket happens to be both a passion and an escape from a stressed life where they have to take care of their families when it should have been otherwise. Salman Butt had to look after his sisters in his teenage years itself when his father left the family. Mohammed Amir belonged to the poor farmlands of Punjab. Cricket proved to be a way of leaving behind the past memories of struggle and yearnings. Though there are a lot of incentives for the players who make it to the national team, the inherent insecurity arises regarding as to how long they can hold on to their positions. In the domestic circuit, cricketers in Pakistan earn a lot less than what their counterparts do in Australia or India. Improving the financial incentives at domestic level would certainly go a long way in fighting with the demons of corruption. Former Pakistan Test captain, Amir Sohail rightly pointed out in an interview that “Unless players get security of job and money in our domestic cricket they will always be susceptible to corruption and bookmakers". However, Salman But was the captain of the national side, and then what possibly could have forced him to be the orchestrator of the spot-fixing fiasco? Here, the personal integrity of a human being comes into question. Participating in various sports is not just an individual endeavour. It is a mean to present the national identity, cultural values and a will to excel. Indulging in unbecoming acts that bring shame and invite ridicule to an individual, sport and the entire nation is certainly a price nobody would want to pay in lieu of illegitimate, easy money making.

7 challenges for 7 billion Amy Simmons | (Source: ABC news)

“Australia is one of the most affluent and also the most effluent nations on Earth. In terms of affluence, Australia is a place where everyone would like to be, but in terms of the damage that we are doing to the environment - although we are only a very small country - my golly, on a per capita basis our emissions are an example for the rest of the world not to follow.”

Professor Roger Short, University of Melbourne

“What we're putting into the atmosphere really constitutes an unprecedented experiment with our planet that is going to lead to changes that haven't been seen in millions of years. As the whole world warms up, a lot of places are going to become not very pleasant to live in. There will be much hotter temperatures, summer-time heat stress, likely drying of most of the continent, and rising sea levels, which will become a problem because most of us live near the coast.”

Professor Steven Sherwood, University of New South Wales

WATER

CHINA: Residents jump into the Yangtze River to cool off from the summer heat in Wuhan, central China's Hubei province. The Yangtze, which flows from glaciers in the Himalayas, is the longest river in Asia and the third-longest in the world. (AFP)

“Access to fresh water in Australia, the driest inhabited continent, is incredibly difficult. We're seeing the impacts of overuse of water resources, particularly in places like the Murray-Darling Basin, and that sort of pressure is only going to increase as Australia's population increases but also obviously as the world population increases.”

Professor Richard Kingsford, University of New South Wales

“Water is probably going to be the first real threat that we bump into. Does the Murray-Darling Basin survive? That's a big question mark still that I don't think has been adequately addressed. Agriculture, which is the main consumer of water, may have to change its whole structure.”

Professor Roger Short, University of Melbourne

This week the world's population ticked over to 7 billion. By 2050 that number is expected to grow to 9 billion. From water shortages to rising sea levels, experts from the University of New South Wales and the University of Melbourne paint a grim future for life on Earth. They forecast dramatic changes unless significant steps are taken to curb population growth. Here seven academics outline seven challenges they say a population of 7 billion must confront. Is it all doom and gloom as they suggest, or do we have a brighter future?

AGEING POPULATION

Photo: THAILAND: A 102-year-old woman finds refuge in Ayutthaya province after historic Thai floods. Thailand's ageing population is rapidly rising. It is ageing faster than its neighbouring countries and is the second most aged country in the region. (Reuters: Damir Sagolj )

“All countries in the world will face the challenge of population ageing - it's happening everywhere. In Australia though, we are fortunate because many countries are older than we are. Relative to countries like Germany, Japan or Italy, Australia is a teenager.”

Professor John Piggott, University of New South Wales

“We've got some major health problems for the future but we've never been in a stronger state with our medical services to actually attack these diseases of old age. We won't overcome all of them, but in developed countries we can certainly look after the elderly. The problem is that the population of the world is growing fastest in the world's developing countries. How can we cope with a double or a trebling of the population of some countries in Africa within the next 40 years when they're already dirt poor and only just getting enough food to live on?”

Professor Roger Short, University of Melbourne

BIRTH CONTROL

SENEGAL: Babies rest on a mat in Dakar, the capital of Senegal. The world's population is set to rise to at least nine billion by 2050. (AFP: Georges Gobet)

“We have to find less polluting sources of energy and we've also got to be much more careful in the way that we make use of the remaining non-renewable fossil fuels we've got. So rather than raping our resources to fund the immediate economic demands of India and China, if we hang on to them for a little bit, as everyone else's supplies run out, they'd get more and more valuable in time.”

“We need to feminise the world and look first and foremost at the interests of women because they're the ones that are going to decide our future and it is their determination to limit the size of their families which will be the saviour of the world.”

“Our sunshine alone is enough to power all the energy demands of our country as it is at the moment and well into the future. So even just with the sunshine supply, I can't imagine that we are ever going to have a problem of running our own country from our own renewable energy resources.”

“Take the oral contraceptive pill, you pay about $30 to $35 for a one-month supply of pills - that is over $1 a pill. The actual cost of making them, you could make one pill for a cent. So there is a hundred-fold mark up by the pharmaceutical companies on the oral contraceptive pills.”

FOOD SECURITY

KENYA: A Somali father shelters his daughter at the head of a queue at a registration centre in the Dadaab refugee complex in Kenya. A famine has affected millions of people in Somalia, driving hundreds of thousands of refugees to neighbouring countries. (AFP: Tony Karumba)

“Back in 1972 the Club of Rome produced an amazing report called Limits to Growth and they said the time had come when we've got to realise that all our non-renewable resources and all our fuel resources were non renewable and there were limits to growth and we better start facing up to them.”

Professor Roger Short, University of Melbourne

“A lot of people in a continent as large as ours but as dry as ours with limited resources means more people wanting to get access to these resources. A simple way to approach this is more competition law, making sure large suppliers do not put pressure on the market to let other people out. It means that price fixing, collusion, corporate governance, banking and finance and property law and the way we deal with real estate will change over time.”

Business law expert Michael Peters, University of New South Wales

“The challenge of Australia to meet the food needs of its ever-growing population is enormous. The idea to dam northern Australia to increase food production is probably not the best strategy. I think it would be far quicker and far more efficient to develop what Australian cities are already doing at very local levels, which is urban food production.”

Dr Alec Thornton, University of New South Wales

“I love the old biblical statement from Isiah - 'all flesh is grass'. That's actually a brilliant statement because it summarises the basic truth that we are only here on Earth because we can trap the energy in sunlight and turn it into something of use to us. And the best way of trapping the energy of sunlight, virtually the only way we've got, is to use chlorophyll - the green stuff in plants - to turn the solar energy into a plant which we can eat or harvest and do what we like with. So ultimately our future depends on the ability of the Earth to trap that solar energy, and for a plant to grow, it needs water.”

Professor Roger Short, University of Melbourne

Faithful fathering: Group from Nagaland The father’s role in a Christian home on holy land tour

A

Kenneth O. Gangel

lbert Einstein said, “Try not to be come a man of success but rather try to become a man of value.” With a deep breath in his lungs and a firm grasp on his courage, Mark is about to take on the biggest job of his life. At the age of 28 he’s getting married. Some people would jokingly say he is finally getting married. But to Mark everything leading up to his wedding with Teri fits the careful plan of God. The demands of his skyrocketing career in electronics research must now take second place to the priorities of his role as a faithful husband and, perhaps soon, a faithful father. Only now is Mark beginning to understand how much more learning he has to do. To become a discipler, he must first be a disciple. To become a teacher, he first must learn. He and Teri both come from families in which fathers lived out decades of faithfulness to their wives and their children, and Mark has no intention of blemish ing that record. He reads newspapers and watches television, so he knows the distorted image of fathering displayed by today’s media. Mark also knows the staggering statistics coming out of national polls. A Harris poll indicated that 84 percent of Americans believe the family is important, but two out of five want no children and only 25 percent want a “stable sex life.” Fewer than half the people responding to the survey indicated they would “work at marriage.” Another study showed that American The holy land tour team in the premises of the Church of the Beatitudes, where Jesus gave the Sermon on the Mount as recorded in the gospel of seventhand eighth-graders average 7.5 minutes per week of focused conversation with Mathew in the Bible, on November 4, 2011 Friday, at Tabgha, Israel. ing fact: that almost every time their star point guard Magic Johnson scored 30 or 40 points in a single game, the Lakers lost! Perhaps this is because Magic had played the game in a way that was outside his truest role on the team. When it comes to Mark, about to get married and have a family, “shooting baskets” doesn’t take priority; his job is to play point guard watch the floor, set up the plays, and pass the ball. That means he takes the lead in developing loving relationships in the family. Faithfulness in leading, faithfulness in loving these are two-thirds of the great triangle of faithful fathering. More than a quarter century ago, a conserva tive Catholic columnist, Michael Novak, wrote in Harper’s magazine, “The role of a father or mother and of children with respect to them, is the absolutely critical center of social force, . . . One unforgettable law has been learned painfully through all the oppressions, disasters and injustices of the last thou sand years if things go well with the family, life is worth living; when the family falters, life falls apart.”

Faithfulness in learning The Bible directs the focus of teaching on Christian fathers. In fact, Paul spent a good bit of time telling Titus how to teach men of any age so that they could function properly in their families and in the church. Obviously God does not need to learn and therefore does not serve us as a model in this case, but the biblical information still downloads faster than we can print it out. The Creek text of Titus 2 includes 11 words for instruction and the English text, 13. The first and last verses emphasize teaching, and the entire chapter deals with different groupings of adults. Paul told Titus to “teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, love and in endurance” (Titus 2:2, NIV). He told Titus to teach the younger men “to be self-controlled” (Titus 2:6). Taken as a block, the information in the Old and New Testaments puts us behind on a huge learning curve that calls for us to keep up with both sides of the equation learning so that we can teach. We learn in order to teach our wives (1 Cor. 14:35). In reality, of course, many Christian wives know a good bit more about the Bible and many other things than do their husbands. But reality does not always reflect what should or could be, especially when we apply scriptural measures to men’s behavior. We learn in order to teach our children (Deut. 6:1-9). Sabbath School, children’s church, Pathfinders, youth camp, Bible quizzing, and a host of other activities for children and young people are only a support, not a substitute, for our own fatherly role as mentors. We learn in order to teach at our churches (2 Tim. 3:16, 1 7). About 20 years ago a church that I attended began an elder training program. Each of the nine elders serving the congregation at that time took a trainee who was willing to acknowledge that he did not yet meet the qualifications of eldership but wanted sincerely to move in that direction. I A young insurance salesman with a wonderful wife and two lovely daughters entered the program. He was summoned to the home office of his company and interviewed for a major promotion. The vice president of personnel asked him dozens of questions, among which he included, “What is your greatest goal in life?” The young man thought about that for a while and then said simply, “I want to be considered worthy by my church to be an elder.” That speaks volumes about faithful ness in learning. He could have said he wanted to be the greatest father in the world, but the reference to eldership as sumes Christian behavior at home. Some of the great men of the Bible (Jacob, Eli, David) experienced some failure when it came to fathering. I do not offer them as models, nor does this article call us to father like Elkanah or Joseph, solid as they might have been. Our task, our call from Scripture is to father like the Father. This article is adapted from Fathering Like the Father, authored by Dr. Gangel and his son, and published by Baker Books.

No churches left in Afghanistan - US State Department

T

Allison Summers | Christian Post

he US State Department has reported that there is not one Christian church or school left in Afghanistan. The absence of Christian churches and schools exists despite the decade-long war the United States has been fighting against the Taliban and the $440 billion taxpayers have shelled out for the war. According to the department’s annual International Religious Freedom Report for July through December of 2010, released just last month, “There is no longer a public Christian church; the courts have not upheld the church’s claim to its 99-year lease, and the landowner destroyed the building in March.” The reported added, “Chapels and churches for the international community of various faiths are located on several military bases, PRTs, and at the Italian embassy.” The US State Department’s report cites hostility from Afghan locals toward Christians as one of main reasons behind the disap-

pearance of Christian churches and schools altogether. This hostility was not only directed at Christians, but also other religions outside of the Muslim majority which most of the population subscribes to, such as Hindus and Sikh groups. “The government’s level of respect for religious freedom in law and in practice declined during the reporting period, particularly for Christian groups and individuals,” the report said. “Residual effects of years of jihad against the Soviet Union, civil strife, Taliban rule, popular suspicion regarding outside influence and the motivations of foreigners, and weak democratic institutions remained serious obstacles...Negative societal opinion and suspicion of Christian activities led to targeting of Christian groups and individuals, including Muslim converts to Christianity. The lack of government responsiveness and protection for these groups and individuals contributed to the deterioration of religious freedom.” Additionally, the report details the Islamic government’s strong

disapproval of those who convert to other religions, further hampering citizens from practicing Christianity in any form. “Conversion from Islam is considered apostasy and is punishable by death under some interpretations of Islamic law in the country,” said the report. “The criminal code does not define apostasy as a crime, and the constitution forbids punishment for any crime not defined in the criminal code; however, the penal code states that egregious crimes, including apostasy, would be punished in accordance with Hanafi religious jurisprudence and handled by an attorney general’s office prosecutor ... During the year, according to the Attorney General’s Office, no penalties have been imposed, although two men were in detention for conversion to Christianity.” The State Department’s report also revealed that there was one remaining Jewish citizen, and one synagogue in Kabul that was not being used “for lack of a Jewish community”. The US State Department partly blames the deteriorating situation on the Afghan government’s failure to protect Christians. (AP Photo)

Advani says right to recall may destabilize structure

MuMbai, NoveMber 5 (aGeNCieS): Differing with Team Anna, BJP leader L K Advani today disfavoured the introduction of the Right to Recall saying it may destabilise the whole structure in a country as big as India. “I am inclined to agree with the Chief Election Commissioner that in a country as vast as ours, it (Right to Recall) may have consequences which may destabilise the whole structure,” he told reporters here today. Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi had recently said that the Right to Recall could destabilise the country. Advani also said nowhere in the world had such a measure been enforced. “Therefore, it is not surprising that nowhere in the world except in one small country somewhere, has the Right to Recall been accepted,” he said. Team Anna has been vigorously campaigning in favour of Right to Recall which has not found favour with the Election Commission of India as well. Advani, however, favoured electoral reforms in the country especially mea-

Malegaon blast accused bail not opposed by NIA MuMbai, NoveMber 5 (iaNS): The bail petitions of nine accused arrested in the 2006 Malegaon blast case faced no opposition Saturday from the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The bail applications were filed in the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court, which is hearing the case. NIA said that it decided not to oppose the bail applications of the nine and the decision was taken after due deliberations on the basis of facts and circumstances. Lawyers of the nine accused also pleaded that they have been in jail for the past four years and there is no direct evidence of their involvement in the blasts. They also contended that the offences against the accused were based only on the forcibly-taken confession statements. The nine accused sought bail at a Mumbai special court here in October. Maharashtra ATS had probed the case before the NIA had arrested the nine - Shabir Ahmed, Salman Farsi, Rais Ahmed, Noorulhuda Doha, Asif Khan, Mohammed Ali, Farooque Ansari, Javed Sheikh and Abrar Ahmed - for their alleged involvement in the multiple blasts in the minority-dominated town. Bomb blasts near a mosque on Sep 8, 2006 in Malegaon town of Maharashtra’s Nashik district had killed 37 people and injured over 100. The accused had also applied for bail in March, which was rejected by the court.

Kanimozhi moves High Court for bail New Delhi, NoveMber 5 (aGeNCieS): DMK MP Kanimozhi and three others, arrested for their alleged roles in the 2G spectrum allocation case, moved the Delhi High Court on Saturday for bail. Besides Ms. Kanimozhi, the three others who moved the high court against a special court order denying them bail two days ago, are DMK-run Kalaignar TV MD Sharad Kumar and Kusegaon Fruits and Vegetables Pvt Ltd directors Asif Balwa and Rajiv Agarwal. DMK Supremo M. Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi has been confined in Tihar Jail since her arrest on May 20. She was denied bail on Thursday by the trial court despite CBI not objecting to pleas for bail by her and four others. Special Judge O.P. Saini denied them the bail saying the charges against them are of grave nature and the CBI’s concession of not objecting their bail pleas was of “no consequence in the eyes of law.” The CBI had preferred not to oppose the bail pleas of Ms. Kanimozhi, Mr. Kumar, Mr. Balwa, Mr. Agarwal and Bollywood filmmaker Karim Morani, whose names had figured in the supplementary charge sheet filed on April 25. The accused have been in the jail for last five to nine months.

and said his party colleague Atal Bihari Vajpayee had raised the issue of electoral reforms way back in 1970 and forced Parliament to set up a Joint Committee on the issue.

Advani said, “We are keen to see whatever is needs to be done about electoral reforms is expedited. There is no doubt that electoral reforms, if effectively implemented, can deal with

the role of money power in elections which is bound to curb corruption.” Alleging extensive use of black money in elections in the country the BJP leader said, “I also be-

Censor Board gets tough with ‘Rockstar’ MuMbai, NoveMber 5 (iaNS): The Censor Board has clamped down on certain audio and visual portions of the muchawaited Ranbir Kapoor starrer “Rockstar” that opens next week. One would think Imtiaz Ali’s musical odyssey about a smalltown boy’s journey from anonymity to superstardom on the wings of love would have flown through the censors, but it was not to be. It was only after Ali and the film’s producers agreed to make the required deletions that the Censor Board passed the film with a UA certificate. The changes ordered by the board included the muting (beeping no longer allowed) of the words “sex” and “bastard” in the soundtrack -- words that commonly occur in our films and would have been allowed if the “Rockstar” team had agreed to an ‘A’ certificate. Likewise, a Hindi expletive which apparently Ranbir Kapoor’s character uses whenever

he’s emotionally aggravated, has been muted wherever it occurs. Again, the word, common in the films of Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Bhardwaj and other purveyors of cowbelt lingo, was not permissible in a film passed for kids with parental guidance. Most notable of all is the board’s instruction to do away with a reference to Tibetan freedom from Chinese dominion. Apparently, Imtiaz Ali has been asked to do away with a flag in the film that reads ‘Free Tibet’. “’Rockstar’ has been given two options regarding the flag that reads ‘Free Tibet’ -- either they can delete or blur the visual of the flag,” a source said. “Not that there are too many Bollywood films that would dare to take a stand on a sensitive political issue like Tibet. ‘Rockstar’ does. The Censor Board has asked for its removal,” the source added. The CEO of the Censor Board, Pankaja Thakur, has confirmed the alterations in the film.

RTI activist Nadeem Sayed stabbed to death ahMeDabaD, NoveMber 5 (PTi): Congress worker and witness in the 2002 Naroda Patiya riot case, Nadeem Ahmed Sayed, was on Saturday stabbed to death by some unknown persons in Juhapura area here, police said. The incident took place this morning when Sayed left his house around 0700 hours, and the assailants stabbed him with sharp weapons several times and fled, they said. According to police, Sayed was rushed to V.S. Hospital by his family members but was pronounced dead on arrival by the doctors. The attackers are on the run and their identity was not yet known, police said. The deceased was a witness in the Naroda Patiya case, where 95 persons were killed on February, 28, 2002 during the communal violence that erupted after the Godhra train burning incident. The court where the case trial was on, had recorded Sayed’s statements a couple of months back. Sources close to Sayed said he was also a police informer in some cases, and his murder had some connection with the clash between the slaughter house owners and police early this week where two policemen were injured and a police jeep was torched by a mob. Police said a case has been registered against the unknown persons and further investigations were on. Sayed was also a RTI activist and he had raised many RTI queries on the Godhra riots and related incidents.

His 86-year-old wife is accompanying him. Cheddi Ram, 99 and his 86-year-old wife Chamni Devi sat on their indefinite hunger strike near Raj Bhavan. Ram claimed that he actively participated in the Quit India movement and other movements, but wasn’t accorded a pension despite efforts since 1981. “We have to run from pillar to post to try to get my pension. I had been jailed during the fight for independence,” Ram, a resident of Godda district, told IANS.

Huge support for Jan Lokpal bill in Sonia’s constituency luCkNow, NoveMber 5 (iaNS): Activists of India Against Corruption (IAC), headed by Anna Hazare, Saturday claimed “massive support” for the Jan Lokpal bill in Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s parliamentary constituency Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh. Announcing the results of a referendum conducted in Rae Bareli district to assess public perception on the draft anti-graft bill, IAC activists claimed 99.5 percent of people supported it. “These people are of the opinion that they would not support Sonia Gandhi or her party in the upcoming polls if the Congress-led government failed to pass the Jan Lokpal bill in the winter session of the parliament,” IAC co-ordinator Archana Srivastava told reporters in Rae Bareli, some 80 km from Lucknow. “Just five percent of the people were of the view that they would continue to support Sonia Gandhi and her party even if the Jan Lokpal bill is not passed during the winter session of parliament,” she added. According to IAC activists, the referendum was conducted from Oct 2 to Nov 4 in rural and urban areas of Rae Bareli.

MuMbai, NoveMber 5 (PTi): BJP leader L K Advani on Saturday asked the government to disclose the names of three MPs who figure in the list of 700 Indians who have stashed funds in Swiss bank accounts, terming it as a serious matter which brings the issue of black money close to the political system. “Three MPs have been named -- one each from Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana -- in the list of those having Swiss bank accounts. This is a very serious issue. If this is true, then obviously the issue of blackmoney comes close to the political system. It cannot be dealt with only as a tax evasion case,” Mr. Advani told reporters in Mumbai. Demanding that full facts in this connection be made public, he said, “I, as an MP, have the right to know who they are and what action has been taken against them. It is not merely a case of tax evasion, it is a crime. Particularly if the amount is a large one, it may well be a case of money earned out of criminality.” Asking whether the Centre is really interested in exposing those who have funds stashed abroad, Mr. Advani said he has been demanding that the government must come out with a white paper spelling out steps taken to bring back the country’s black money. Countries like USA, Germany, France and even smaller nations like Philippines, Peru and Nigeria have taken a variety of measures to bring back black money parked in foreign bank accounts with great success. “Why is the UPA government not ready to do the same,” he asked.

New Delhi, NoveMber 5 (PTi): An unpublished post wriiten by Anna Hazare in Marathi, which is made public now, states "Very soon, I am thinking on the lines of restructuring the Core Committee..." Fresh controversy dogged Team Anna on Saturday as Anna Hazare’s blogger made public a blog which was kept under wraps to blunt the Gandhian’s claim that he had not spoken to him about reorganising his Core team. Blogger Raju Parulekar, a journalist, also claimed that the Gandhian wanted to remove “undemocratic and fascist” Arvind Kejriwal, Kiran Bedi, Prashant Bhushan and “their pawns” from his core group. The fall-out between Mr. Hazare and Mr. Pa-

rulekar came as the former claimed that he never spoke to the journalist or met him on the issue of restructuring of Core Committee and forming a new Pan-Indian organisation with immediate effect. Mr. Parulekar posted his version as well as an unpublished blog by Mr. Hazare in Marathi along with its English translation in the Gandhian’s blog this morning, claiming that he had not uploaded an order dictated by Mr. Hazare after October 30 following a Core Committee meeting asking to hold Core Team. Mr. Parulekar had told media that Mr. Hazare wanted to reorganise his team and wanted to form a pan-India organisation, a claim denied by the Gandhian. “I am thinking

on the lines of restructuring the Core Committee. I am hereby informing all the members of Team Anna,” Mr. Hazare said in the ‘unpublished’ blog, now made public. Mr. Parulekar said, “I am saying again and again Annaji was fed up with the core team and especially these four members (though he won’t say this in public as he is decent enough) wanted to re-structure core team and build Pan-Indian organisation,” he claimed. Mr. Parulekar said Mr. Hazare “spontaneously” wrote the blog on restructuring the team on October 23 afternoon “when he made up his mind to get away from Kejriwal, Bedi and Bhushan and their pawns in the Core Committee.” “Sureshbhau Pathare

(Hazare’s close aide) was present there. He tried to stop Annaji but Annaji was unstoppable. Then Sureshbhau requested me not to upload Annaji’s this particular blog… at least immediately.” Alleging that Mr. Kejriwal and others manipulated Kumar Vishwas’ letter on disbanding Core Committee, he said after Team Anna left Ralegan Siddhi on October 30, “Anna asked me to stay back and in one-toone close door meeting he signed an order to hold Core Team and asked me to put on blog which I haven’t uploaded that order yet.” “How Kejriwal, Prashant Bhushan and Bedi were so undemocratic, fascist and disrespected Annaji’s thoughts and thrust theirs [in the] so-called Core

Committee meeting on Annaji and overpowered me when I fought back for Annaji because Annaji is fragile, his blood pressure is fluctuating and is unwell. “Dr Dharmadhikari was present there. He told me to take care of Annaji as he is weak. Dr Dharmadhikari suggested me that Annaji should be kept happy. So to avoid stress and strain I kept aside Annaji’s document,” Mr. Parulekar said. Mr. Parulekar said he was not happy in talking about this issue “but analogy of 3 or 4 representing 120 crore Indians with non-transparency and undemocratic behaviour is itself a paradox when Annaji is fighting against neofeudalism, monarchy and democratic rights of every Indian.” Emphasising on a Pan-Indian apolitical organisation with youths like Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev, Mr. Parulekar said, it is them who will have to fight this battle of anti-corruption for Hazare without taking into consideration a self-proclaimed group of 25 members undemocratically and unconstitutionally on the streets of India. He also alleged that a senior journalist who defamed him on TV should apologise for threatening him indirectly. “He challenged my honesty and integrity which I had kept intact in my 17 years of my life in media,” he said. In the ‘unpublished’ blog, Mr. Hazare said, he thought of restructuring the Core Committee as he received letters from all over the country and states in favour of this agitation saying, ‘I am ready to pledge my life

for this noble cause.’ “The letters are written by retired Supreme Court Judges, retired High Court Judges, Brigadiers and Colonels from Army, Professors and Principals and educated people with idealism. “Soon, these people will be categorised taking in to consideration the type of work they are willing to do. I have decided to put to use such people from all over the country and states who are willing to do voluntary service to the society,” Mr. Hazare said.He said there is a need to ensure these people and expand the members of Team Anna. “Also we need to have able people and form a working committee. All members from every state will be given preference when forming a Core Committee. For effective communication they will be linked on-line,” he said. “We have a long battle to fight ahead. In order to have a corruption-free India we can put all this to use. I believe that not only India but for other countries too this will serve as a good example to rid their country off corruption. We do not want to form organisations but create volunteers on District and State level,” the 74-yearold activist said. “In this struggle there won’t be a President, a Secretary or a treasurer. People will only work in the capacity of volunteers. Naturally we will need financial aid. No cash will be accepted. Donations in form of cheque or draft are welcome. But it should come from people having belief in lakhs of martyrs like Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev,” he said.

peace plan unravels; Greece PM survives confidence vote Syria 15 killed in protests

ATHENS, NovEmbEr 5 (AP): Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou survived a confidence vote early Saturday, calming a vicious revolt in his Socialist party with an emotional pledge to step aside if necessary and seek a cross-party government lasting four months to safeguard a new European debt agreement. Mr. Papandreou won the critical parliamentary confidence motion 153145 after a week of drama in Athens that horrified Greece’s European partners, spooked global markets and overshadowed the Group of 20 summit in the French resort of Cannes. The threat of a Greek defaultorexitfromthecommon euro currency has worsened the continent’s debt crisis, which is already struggling under bailouts for Greece, Ireland and Portugal. Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos, who warned that the debt-ridden country still faced “mortal danger,” said the new government would last until the end of February. But conservative opposition leader Antonis Samaras demanded immediate elections. He did not say whether he would join coalition talks, due to be formally launched later Saturday when Papandreou meets the country’s president. “The masks have fallen,” Samaras said. “Mr. Papandreou has rejected our proposals in their entirety. The responsibility he

bears is huge. The only solution is elections.” Midway through its fouryear term, Mr. Papandreou’s government came under threat after his disastrous bid this week to hold a referendum on a major new European debt agreement. The idea was swiftly scrapped Thursday after an angry response from markets and European leaders who said any popular vote in Greece would determine whether the country would keep its cherished euro membership. They also vowed to withhold a critical 8 billion instalment of loans from an existing bailout deal that

Greece needs urgently to stave off an imminent and catastrophic default. Mr. Papandreou’s shock referendum gamble, and the hostile international response, horrified many of his own party stalwarts. It prompted an open rebellion with senior socialists saying they would only back the confidence vote if he pledged to seek a cross-party coalition with a mandate to secure the new debt deal and the disbursement next bailout loan instalment. Struggling to face down the revolt, Mr. Papandreou insisted his only priority was to save the country. He

insisted he was not concerned with retaining the premiership, but warned that elections now would have been “catastrophic,” jeopardizing Greece’s continued bailout funding, the new debt deal and the country’s euro membership. He sought the vote of confidence “to safeguard a steady course for the country with no power vacuum, without being dragged to election,” he said. “We must proceed in an organized way. And regardless of developments, the country must be governed tomorrow without turbulence.” Several thousands sup-

porters of Greece’s Communist Party protested outside parliament just ahead of Friday’s vote to demand elections, in a rally that ended peacefully. Government officials said they were not deterred by an initial hostile response by opposition parties to the coalition offer. “We will keep inviting (Samaras), and re-inviting him, again and again until we have a result,” Agriculture Minister Costas Skandalidis said. After seeing nearly two years of harsh austerity measures that spurred crippling strikes, violent

demonstrations and street attacks against his lawmakers, Mr. Papandreou insisted the burden of painful reform could not be carried without help from opposition parties. “We, the Socialist party deputies, carried the cross of reform ... But one group in Parliament is not enough,” he said. “This great task requires sincere and broad support.” Greece has been surviving since May 2010 on a first 110 billion bailout. But its financial crisis was so severe that a second rescue was needed as the country remained locked out of international bond markets by sky-high interest rates and facing an unsustainable national debt increase. The new European deal, agreed on Oct. 27 after marathon negotiations, would give Greece an additional 130 billion ($179 billion) in rescue loans and bank support. It would also see banks write off 50 percent of Greek debt, worth some 100 billion ($138 billion). The goal is to reduce Greece’s debts to the point where the country is able to handle its finances without relying on constant bailouts. In return for bailout money, Greece was forced to embark on a punishing program of tax hikes and cuts in pensions and salaries that sent Papandreou’s popularity plummeting and his majority in parliament whittled down from a comfortable 10 seats to just two.

bEIruT, NovEmbEr 5 (AP): A Syrian peace plan brokered by the Arab League has unraveled as security forces killed 15 people, opening fire on thousands of protesters who denounced President Bashar Assad and said he never intended to hold up his end of the deal to end the violence. Friday's bloodshed, coming only two days after Syria agreed to the deal, suggests Damascus is unwilling – or unable – to put a swift end to a crackdown that already has killed 3,000 people since the uprising began in March. ''This regime is not serious about ending its brutal crackdown,'' said Mustafa Osso, a Syria-based human rights lawyer. ''Today was a real test for the intentions of the regime and the answer is clear to everyone who wants to see.'' The crisis in Syria has burned for nearly eight months despite widespread condemnation and international sanctions aimed at chipping away at the ailing economy and isolating Assad and his tight circle of relatives and advisers. The protesters have grown increasingly frustrated with the limits of their peaceful movement, and there are signs of a growing armed rebellion in some areas. Some protesters even are calling for the kind of foreign military action that helped topple Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi. But NATO has ruled out any plans for Syria, a country

of 22 million with a combustible mix of sectarian and religious identities, and Assad still has a firm grip on power. The iron loyalty of his security apparatus sets the stage for an increasingly destructive fight over the future of a nation ruled for more than four decades by the Assad dynasty. Tremors from the unrest in Syria could shake the region. Damascus' web of allegiances extends to Lebanon's powerful Hezbollah movement and Iran's Shiite theocracy. And although Syria sees Israel as the enemy, the countries have held up a fragile truce for years. Thousands of protesters braved cold and rainy weather Friday after opposition groups called for a large turnout to test whether the regime would in fact refrain from using deadly force, as agreed under the Arab League plan. But gunfire erupted shortly after the protests began, following the same pattern seen during previous Friday protests for months. ''Arab League, beware of Bashar Assad!'' read one banner carried by protesters in the central city of Homs, which has turned into one of the country's most deadly areas due to the military crackdown and what appears to be growing sectarian bloodshed. Two main activist groups, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordinating Committees, said at least 15 people were killed Friday, most of them in Homs and suburbs of the Syrian capital.

7 indicted in Benazir murder case 42 more miners rescued from central China mine

ISlAmAbAd, NovEmbEr 5 (AgENcIES): A Pakistani anti-terrorism court hearing the Benazir Bhutto assassination case today indicted seven people, including two former top police officers responsible for providing security to the ex-Premier. Former Rawalpindi police chief Saud Aziz and exSuperintendent of Police Khurram Shahzad were indicted by the court along with five alleged members of militant groups who were identified as Hasnain Gul, Rafaqat Hussain, Sher Zaman, Aitzaz Shah and Abdul Rasheed. The two former police officers have been accused of negligence in providing security to Bhutto. Prosecution lawyers said the indictments of the suspects were of varying nature. Details were not immediately

known. Following the indictment, the judge of the Rawalpindi-based anti-terrorism court adjourned the case till November 19. Bhutto was killed by a suicide attacker shortly after addressing an election rally in Rawalpindi on December 27, 2007. She was attacked weeks after she returned to Pakistan after spending sev-

eral years in self-exile. The accused were presented before the anti-terrorism court's judge during proceedings conducted in Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail for security reasons. The accused denied the charges against them. Following this, the judge instructed the prosecution to present its witnesses at the next hearing on November 19. The two police officers are currently on bail. Though the anti-terrorism court had issued an arrest warrant for former President Pervez Musharraf after he failed to cooperate with investigators, he was not among those indicted today. The prosecution has said it wants to question Musharraf regarding alleged lapses in the security cover provided to Bhutto.

bEIJINg, NovEmbEr 5 (AP): Rescuers pulled 42 more miners to the surface on Saturday, more than 36 hours after they were trapped after a cave-in at a coal mine in central China, but several other workers were still missing, state media reported. The rescues came after seven other miners were pulled out alive Friday from the mine in the city of Samenxia in Henan province. Four miners were killed in Thursday night’s accident, and an estimated seven were still missing. Saturday’s rescue was the biggest in the country since April 2010, when 115 miners were pulled out alive after being trapped for eight days in a mine in northern China. Floodwaters close in on heart of Thai capital bANgkok, NovEmbEr 5 (AP): Floodwaters lapped Bangkok's largest outdoor market on Saturday as officials warned that no major barriers now stood in the way to prevent the water from reaching the heart of the Thai capital. Hoping to divert some of the mass of water still piled up in northern Bangkok, workers Friday night completed a 3.7-mile (6-kilometre) flood wall made from massive, hastily assembled sand bags, said Bangkok city spokesman Jate Sopitpongstorn. But the city will have to rely on its existing drainage system to fight water that was already just a few miles (kilometres) from the central business district, he said. Water from the country's worst flooding in more than half a century flowed past the eastern side of the famed Chatuchak Weekend Market, a sprawling open air shopping zone and major tourist attraction that sits less than 6 miles (10 kilometres) north of the central business district. Associated Press reporters saw only a few vendors and shoppers on a day that would normally be packed with sellers and buyers. The floodwaters were also advancing southward in adjacent Lad Phrao, a district studded with office towers, condominiums and a popular shopping mall. The flooding, which started in northern Thailand in late July and has killed almost 450 people nationwide, has been spreading across Bangkok's north

and west for more than a week. The floods, fed by unusually heavy monsoon rains and a string of tropical storms, have affected more than a third of the country's provinces, destroying millions of acres (hectares) of crops and forcing thousands of factories to close. The government has asked residents in eight of the city's 50 districts to evacuate. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra told a radio audience Saturday that the government would allocate 100 billion baht ($3.3 billion) for post-flood reconstruction in accordance to a plan to be put before the Cabinet on Tuesday. miners out of the mine shaft to ambulances. The miners lay on stretchers, wrapped with blankets with their eyes covered by towels to prevent them from being damaged by the sudden exposure to light after hours of being trapped. CCTV said the rescue work had been hindered by large amounts of coal dust thrown up by a rock explosion in the mine, which happened shortly after a small earthquake near the mine. Fourteen miners managed to escape when the accident happened, the official Xinhua News Agency said. Following the accident, at least 200 workers dug a small rescue tunnel about 1,650 feet (500 meters) deep to try to reach the trapped miners, the People’s Daily newspaper said. The mine belongs to

Yima Coal Group, a large state-owned coal company in Henan, the State Administration of Work Safety said on its website. Luo Lin, head of the administration, said a magnitude-2.9 earthquake occurred near the mine shortly before a “rock burst” was reported. The phenomenon occurs when settling earth bears down on mine walls and causes a sudden release of stored energy. The exploding chunks of coal and rock, or the shock waves alone, can be lethal. China’s coal mines are the deadliest in the world, although the industry’s safety record has improved in recent years as smaller, illegal mines have been closed. Annual fatalities are now about one-third of the high of nearly 7,000 in 2002.

“They tried to rubbish my reputation and name during the trial and when the time comes I will reveal everything about this case,” said Amir, who picked up 51 wickets in his short career of 14 Tests. Amir apologised for his role in the scandal. “I really regret what I have done. I am really sorry for what has happened. I can only now apologize to my countrymen and all cricket lovers for my actions,” Amir. The 19-year-old leftarm pacer, who was compared to Wasim Akram and other greats at his tender age, said the realisation of what he had done and how he had harmed his countrymen and the sport came very late. “If I had known this would all end this way I would have stayed clear from such things. I got misled and was misguided and today I have paid the price for it,” Amir told Geo News, shortly after the judge announced his sentence. “I got carried away and it was the biggest mistake of my life.”

Karachi, November 5 (PTi): A regretful Mohammad Amir has blamed PCB for not educating him enough againstcorruptionandvowed to reveal “more” about the case, in which co-accused Salman Butt and Mohammaed Asif “tried to damage his reputation” further. Amir was sent to young offenders’ detention centre for six months while Butt and Asif were sent to jail for 30 months and 12 months respectively after being found guilty of spot-fixing during last year’s Lord’s Test against England. The young bowler held the Pakistan cricket authorities for not doing enough to create awareness among players about the pitfalls of getting into corruption. “The PCB never told me just how serious a offence it was to get into these sort of things. They didn’t educate me enough about anti-corruption laws,” he added. He also expressed disappointment at the way Butt and Asif slandered him during the trial in a London court.

‘We Care III – Autumn Musicale’ rives up Mokokchung

okokchung being the land of fashion might be a doubtful claim, but surely it is a land of music and musicians, as talented local artists took the stage on November 4, 2011 night and entertained a nearly five thousand audience till 10pm at the ‘We Care III – Autumn Musicale.’ The event was held at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex organized by the Ao Kaketshir Mungdang (AKM). The programme had Nagaland Home Minister Imkong L Imchen as chief guest and a host of other dignitaries taking seats in the front, was a huge success. The main objective of the concert was to raise funds for the oldest vernacular newspaper in northeast Ao Milen. The funds were to be garnered through sale of concert tickets and a raffle. After the formal programme which included a speech from the chief guest, who is also a former AKM president, and a word of gratitude and challenge from the convener of the Ao

Milen Management Board, the raffle draw was held. A tribute to the vernacular Ao Milen, which started publication in the year 1932 by AKM pioneers, was also sung at the formal programme. The concert started with a bang - literally. Firecrackers announced it. Arsashi Ozukum, a young singing talents in Mokokchung started the concert with an original ‘Mokokchung’ – a tribute to Mokokchung district. Then, young Arenchenla Walling from Kohima took the stage and sang two songs – an Ao song and the other, the Bangles’ hit song ‘What’s Up.’ Those in the audience feeling a bit tipsy and wanting to sing along with the singers may have felt been a bit disappointed when A2S Vocal Band (a group of three brothers) took the stage and sang a song dedicated to their deceased sister. It was more of a solemn moment. But music lovers surely relished the song of the A2S Vocal Band. Then Shilubenla with GIRLS, an all-

female group formed in 2011 and winner of the quartet competition at the 24th NSF general conference took the stage. Their first song – an English Gospel number, was a slow and som-

ber song one usually hears inside a church. Despite the perfect harmony of their voices, some shouts from the crowds ‘Halleluiah, halleluiah’ surely indicated boredom. Their next song

was much livelier. Then Bendangsangba, front-man of the boys band Enchanters took stage and sang two songs. Bendang Imchen of Dimapur was next, followed by local singing sensation Arsashi (winner of best vocalist in the recent Rockaware contest at Dimapur) then also Rongsenyangla, another popular singer in the town. However, the centrestage was taken by Tiameren from Kohima, whose satirical songs are a great hit among the people. As he sang his first original song ‘Molumi Nu Meyong’, the audience sang along with him. The audience wanted more from Tiameren, who obliged and sang two more songs. Before the house band took stage, artistes of the night presented a group song titled ‘Mokokchung’ which is said to be composed by Tiameren. As the host for the evening Tutu A Jamir handed over the stage to the house band ‘After 9’ the audience braced themselves for some hard rock. With locally renowned singer Matang with

his powerful vocals, accompanied by well-known musicians, the After 9 band promised some good music, and they did not disappoint the audience. Firecrackers lit up the cold November night as the house band started their first song. It was only after 10 PM that the audience slowly streamed out of the venue. With a successful ‘We Care III – Autumn Musicale’ the AKM has once again proved that it can successfully organize any kind of events be it entertainment programmes or conferences. Many commended the organizational skills of the AKM, especially with regard to security and audience management and other logistics. Some also commented on the discipline of the audience, who turned out in large numbers. And with the We Care III – Autumn Musicale, the festive season has arrived in Mokokchung and will continue till the first week of January, as it is every year in this picturesque town.

'Hope Sachin gets 100th ton at Kotla'

NeW DeLHi, November 5 (pTi): As anticipation builds up for Sachin Tendulkar's 100th international ton, Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Saturday said the team is hoping that the veteran cricketer achieves the milestone in the very first Test of the three-match series against the West Indies starting Sunday. "It is (Sachin's 100th ton) bound to happen. Hopefully, he gets it here and then we will celebrate and go ahead," Dhoni said at the pre-match press conference. "What we are thinking as a team is that we want to do well in the series and how we do it. It's important to start the series well. We will let him (Tendulkar) get his hundred. When that happens we will celebrate and then go ahead," he said. Dhoni revealed that two players will make their debut in the match but he did not divulge who they could be. It is most likely to be two bowlers - a pacer and a spinner. "Two debutants can be

in the playing XI tomorrow, let's see. All the players are fit and all of them are available for selection. There was no injury in the practice session also," he said. Asked if spinner Rahul Sharma could be included in the playing XI, Dhoni said, "He has done well but we are not concentrating on a single player either in our team as well as in our opponents." India are full strength in the batting department with the likes of Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh returning to the side but Dhoni said the team cannot take the West Indies lightly. "West Indies are a very good side, we can't take them lightly. We will play our best. They have come here after doing well in Bangladesh. Overall it will be a good series," he said. Asked about leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo, who has been doing well for the West Indies recently, Dhoni said, "We are not focussing on a single bowler. Bishoo is a good

bowler and he is doing well and as a leg-spinner, he will be quite a handful here. But they have other bowlers also, they have good fast bowlers." The Indian captain said there was no reason that the team should look back at the England series debacle and said that injury to key players had played a major role in it. "There is no reason that we should look back at the England series. Why should we think of something that had happened some three and a half months back? Injuries had played a big part there and we can't do anything about it as it is a part and parcel of the game," said Dhoni. "We are not thinking about the England series and we are concentrating on the West Indies series," he added. Dhoni said the Ferozeshah Kotla pitch which has been criticised in the past for its low and variable bounce would be a better strip. "The pitch looks good. It does not look like it will turn from the first

day. But as the match progresses it will turn. I am looking at my spinners getting the turn from the third day onwards. More than this I don't know how it will behave," he said. "I am hoping that the bounce would be better and it would be a better wicket than before," he said. Asked how different the team feels as it is starting the series not as world number one, Dhoni said, "We want to be world number one but it is not that it is something you get it and hold onto it without doing well. "We did not do well in England and that is why we lost it," he said. "But it is a process and we have to start it again and get to there," he added. Dhoni paid tribute to former Indian captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, who recently died after illness, describing him a great cricketer who has served the country well. "I am not a person who knows a lot about history but from what I know he is great cricketer, an aggressive cricketer

on the field. He has done a lot for Indian cricket." Meanwhile, the Indian team underwent batting, bowling and fielding practice sessions in the morning, which lasted for around three hours with all 15 players in tow under the watchful eyes of coach Duncan Fletcher. Senior players Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag spent most of the time at the ground doing catching practices with fielding coach Trevor Penny. Dravid, who normally stands at first slip, was the first to go through catching practice with Tendulkar throwing the ball to Penny. VVS Laxman, who had some knocks at the nets early on, and Sehwag later joined for the slip fielding drill.

Format for qualification of teams for NPL

Dimapur, November 5 (mexN): “Having received tremendous response for the auctioning of teams, the management of the Nagaland Premier League (NPL) after much speculation has now revealed the format for the qualification into the league,” stated a press note received here today. The 10 slots for teams to be inducted into the inaugural NPL have been divided elaborately. From the 10 earmarked slots, 2 slots will be awarded to the districts of Dimapur, Kohima and Mokokchung - out of the 2 given slots one will be auctioned off to the highest bidder and the other will be given out on the basis of merit to the three districts. The remaining 4 slots (out of 10) will be open to public auction. The highest bidder will have the discretion of blocking the district slot (other than the first 3 districts of Dimapur, Kohima and Mokokchung) and thereafter that particular district will remain under their representation. The last day for registration is November 9, 2011 and the auction dates has now been set on November 16, 2011. For further information on registrations, contact the NPL management at: +91 9862578082 (Dimapur); +91 9774012957(Kohima); +91 7308043572 (Mokokchung). For any further information and details, kindly contact the NPL office at 1st Floor, Mall 1922, Khermahal, Dimapur.
