puNaKHa, OctOber 13 (ap): The fifth Dragon King came down from his golden throne to place a silk crown upon the head of his bride. Monks chant-
ed in celebration and she took her seat beside him Thursday morning, the new queen of the tiny Himalayan nation of Bhutan. The wedding of King Jigme
Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck to his commoner bride, Jetsun Pema, has captivated a nation that had grown impatient with their 31-year-old bachelor
king’s lack of urgency to take a wife and start a family since his father retired and handed power to him five years ago. Thousands of Bhutanese from the surrounding villages joined the king and queen at their wedding reception at a fairground outside the country’s most sacred monastery fortress, where a slate of dancers performed traditional routines for the new couple. “I have longed for this celebration, and here it is,” said Pema Gyeltshen, a nearby villager, as he watched the dancing. When the king, who has a reputation as a down-to-earth and accessible leader, was asked how it felt to be married, he asked his questioner if she was married. When she said no, he responded: “It’s great; you should try it yourself.” The celebrations began at 8:20 a.m. — a time set by royal astrologers — when the king, wearing the royal yellow sash over a golden robe with red flowers and multicolored boots, walked into the courtyard of the 17th century monastery in the old capital of Punakha and proceeded up the high staircase inside. ENSF alleges quota bias in NPSC exam
Dimapur, OctOber 13 (mexN): The Nagaland Public Service Commission (NPSC) is asked by the Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) to “keep in abeyance” the recent results of the civil service examination. The organization has alleged that the NPSC did not implement the 25% reservation for the eastern communities of Nagaland. A press release from the ENSF today said to have “detected a serious error” in October 5, 2011 results of the NPSC’s recruitment for ‘gazette’ and ‘non gazette.’ The 25% reservation policy of the state government allotted to the six tribes of “eastern Nagaland” was not implemented as per the 25 % quota, the ENSF asserted. The ENSF said there were 64 posts advertised
out of which 22 was “gazette” posts and 42 “nongazette” posts. “The total reserved posts for the 6 tribes out of the 64 posts as per 25 % job reservation policy should be 16 whereas only 13 was allotted for the eastern Naga tribes,” the ENSF asserted. The ENSF went so far as to claim that the “eastern Naga tribes as always are deprived” of 3 posts, of which 2 are “gazette” posts and one “non-gazette” post (one each of DSP, EAC and a ‘non-gazette’ posts). “There were 12 EAC posts and 10 DSP posts so 3 EAC and 2 DSP posts should have been allocated to the eastern Naga tribes as per 25% job reservation policy but the commission has blatantly neglected the quota for reasons best known to the department which is highly questionable,”theENFsaid. The organization has asked the NPSC to “rectify the error” and implement the reservation “before issuing out the appointment orders to the successful candidates.”

Notice to Delhi on Nagas Alternative...
From page 1 The UNC said it had communicated with New Delhi on September 29 in connection with the ‘alternative arrangement’ for the Nagas in Manipur. It had also said the situation in the present state of Manipur, it had been reiterated, is fragile, sensitive and delicate with grave potential for communal confrontation and violence which could possibly lead to catastrophic consequences. The UNC added that the democratic process of tripartite talk had kept in check the injured sentiments of the Nagas in Manipur with the expectation of a peaceful negotiation. But now the Nagas are of the considered view that nothing positive can come out of the tripartite talk. But the suppression and exploitation of the Nagas in particular and the tribals in general by the communal government of Manipur cannot be allowed to continue any further, the Naga body stated.

Due to this incident, the adjourning area of the Assam-Nagaland border was in tense situation. Several organisationsofAssamhadgivenultimatumtotheauthority demanding immediate release of the abductees or else impose of road blockade for travelers from Nagaland effective from 5 pm today. The Border Peace Coordination Committee (A-N) had viewed this situation as very unfortunate and unwarranted for. With a meaningful negotiation with the abductors, the two persons were released unharmed today at 3 pm and situation brought under control. The BPCC (AN) thanked the Administrations and Police of both the states and the village councils of the neighbouring Naga villages for their effective cooperation for defusing to this crisis.

Planning Board (SPB) deputy chairman Neiba Kronu, political advisor to CM Z. Lohe, ex-MLA Nuzota Swuro, NPF vice president Pusazo Luruo also spoke on the occasion. Presidential address was delivered by Chivotso Nienu, president NPF Phek division. The function was chaired by Thepuphi Kapuh, member CEC while vote of thanks was proposed by Vehushu, working president NPF Phek.
From page 1 A few minutes later, his 21-year-old bride, the daughter of an airline pilot, arrived at the end of a procession of red-robed monks and flag bearers across a wooden footbridge over the wide, blue river beside the fort and followed him inside. Singers chanted songs of celebration amid the clanging of drums and the drone of long dhung trumpets. She wore a traditional wraparound skirt with a gold jacket with deep red cuffs. Inside, the nation’s top cleric, who presided over the wedding, performed a purification ceremony for the couple in front of a massive 100foot (30-meter) Thongdal tapestry of Bhutan’s 17th century founder, the monk-king Zhabdrung. The pair then proceeded to the temple for a ceremony broadcast live on national television, save for a few minutes when the king, his father and the cleric, known as the Je Khenpo, entered the sacred tomb of Zhabdrung, where only they are allowed.
The king’s father then gave the bride an array of five colored scarves representing blessings from the tomb. Hesitantly, she then approached the king’s throne with a golden chalice filled with the ambrosia of eternal life. They held it together for several seconds and then he drank. The king, wearing his red crown, with an image of the protector raven rising from the top, came down from the throne in front of a giant golden Buddha statue and placed a smaller crown on her head. After she took her place as queen, the newly married couple was feted by monks playing deep tones on traditional trumpets and pounding drums. The Je Khenpo presented them a series of gifts — a mirror, curd, grass, a conch — representing blessings for longevity, wisdom, purity and other well wishes. There were no foreign princes, no visiting heads of state, no global celebrities. Just the royal family and government officials at ceremony, thousands of villagers at the reception
and much of the rest of the country’s 700,000 people watching live on TV. The Oxford-educated king is adored for pushing development and ushering in democratic reforms that established a constitutional monarchy and legislature in 2008. His teenidol looks — slicked back hair and long sideburns — his penchant for evening bike rides through the streets and his reputation as a laid-back, accessible leader, also make him the rare monarch whose picture adorns the bedroom walls of teenage girls. The remote nation began slowly opening up to the rest of the world in the 1960s. Foreigners and the international media were first admitted in 1974. Television finally arrived in 1999. The country has not had a royal wedding since the fourth king held a mass ceremony in 1988 with his four wives — four sisters whom he had informally married years earlier. The current king says he will take only one wife, so the country is unlikely to see another such celebration for a long time.

Health of Children
E
xpressing concern over the death of 500 children allegedly due to encephalitis, the National Child Rights Commission has asked for a report on the matter from the Uttar Pradesh government in 15 days. In a letter to the state chief secretary, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has stated that the issue amounted to violation of 'children's right to life, survival and development'. Besides asking the UP government for the total number of cases of encephalitis reported so far this year, the NCPCR more importantly has sought information on the existing mechanism for review of the health calamities and the action taken by the concerned departments, especially the department of water and sanitation, to prevent encephalitis in Gorakhpur. Other details that the state government will have to provide include the emergency and corrective measures being taken up. In fact media reports suggest that the dreaded Japanese encephalitis is witnessing an emergence in the so called vulnerable areas such as UP, Delhi and even the northeastern States. After UP, the NE State of Assam has the second highest case and casualty of Japanese encephalitis. Nagaland is also showing 44 cases and 6 deaths so far in 2011. Whether Nagaland’s health care system is prepared not just to respond to any impending crisis but also take preventive measures is going to be crucial in saving the lives of our children. We need to learn some lessons from the present situation in UP where the deadly encephalitis, has been striking with alarming regularity especially in the eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh and 500 children have died due to it in the last two months. According to some media report more than 50,000 lives have been lost in the last three decades. And off course the problem is about the collapse of the public health system. The years of neglect by the government system and the fact that these are among the poorest section of our population, this has only led to the willful negligence and callousness of the authorities. This is plain injustice of the government machinery to ignore poor people whose voice cannot be heard and therefore the lack of concern. And this is evident by the fact that the first outbreak was reported in 1978 and with so many deaths and huge investment made in health care; it is disturbing that the epidemic has still not been contained. In this age of information technology, fast communication and breakthrough in science and medicine, India seems to be struggling when in fact the country ought to be breaking new ground in health and education. The disturbing deaths of so many children should wake up the concern people—government, scientist and business so that collective effort may be put towards more research, cure and proper implementation of health services. The Union Health Ministry should also look afresh into its strategy and come out with a more specific programme to deal with the menace of Japanese encephalitis and more so given the fact that the phenomenon of climate change may only mean more of such epidemic in the years ahead. The only silver lining at present is that while issues of health fail to find mention during elections, this time around, the BJP has decided to encash public anger by taking up JE eradication as a poll promise. The package on offer ranges from a centrally- sponsored comprehensive JE eradication programme for UP on the pattern of Pulse Polio Immunisation among others, if the party is voted to power. Maybe politics for a good cause can actually be a harbinger of the much needed succor for the countless of children who will have to confront this killer virus every year. Our politicians and the government machinery must all wake up from their present state of stupor.

“Scholarship distribution – The mind troubler” •-Why is it that the concerned department taking so much time in disbursing the scholarship to all the students till now. . . . . ????????? Now, it has almost reached the end of the year and still now not all the students have receive it. Those students who have not receive it till now are facing a lot of grievances. These students are going regularly on their respective banks to check their accounts in which they are even skipping their valuable classes. “these in future is indirectly affecting their studies” There are some students, who have not receive their stipends. . .are waiting eagerly to at least buy their required text books, note books and to even pay Hostel fees, monthly fees, canteen fees etc..etc. . in a way for which they will not ask their parents for all those above mentioned matter. Most of the colleges or educational institutions will be conducting their selection exams in due course of time and we believe that it will surely affect the mind-set of the students ultimately their studies directly or indirectly. Why are the concerned department so ignorant about the hardships that the students are facing in the present scenario. Various questions have arised in the students minds with regard to the disbursement of the scholarship as to why some students have received the scholarship and at the same time, why some students haven’t. Various questions have started to develop in the students mind’s. – 1) Are the concerned department even trying to eat those little amounts of money issued for the students by the centre.?.?.? 2) Are the concerned department planning to issue the scholarship by next year.?.?.?.? 3) Why the NSF is so silent about it.?.?.? The government employees salaries are being disbursed through their respective bank accounts without any delay every month. . . . But .?.? in the case of students scholarship it is disbursed once in a year; and that too with taking so much of time. . . may be this is the first year that the practise of disbursing scholarships through bank accounts are being processed, but a delay of almost about 3months specially for those students who have still not yet received is just unimaginable. . It will be an act of generosity towards the students community, if the concerned departments look upon the grievances faced by the students and release the scholarship as soon as possible to those who have till now not yet received. Barefoot: Rainbows in the dust
Street children have often gone through and survived a brutalised life. Adult interventions, therefore, need patience and understanding…
state actors. It is estimated that out of these less than two per cent of street youth and children are reached by the custodial juvenile homes and less than five per cent by all NGO interventions. In Delhi, the national capital, for instance, there are, for instance, an estimated 50,000 street children. In a recent case in the High Court, it emerged that around 1,200 are reached by custodial juvenile homes of the state government, and 1,500 by all NGOs (but very few provide mainstream education and comprehensive residential care). There are also serious limitations to the conventional state approaches such as custodialising such children in unfree homes. NGO models are of uneven quality, and diverse approaches; those that have merit are often too cost intensive to be replicable on the scale which is a dire requirement. The Government of India, through the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and other initiatives, has been able to work with state governments and citizen groups to expand significantly the availability of primary schooling at the doorstep of most children in the country. But there remains a stubborn core of children that an even more expanded network of schools would not be able to bring into school, even if the school is at the neighbourhood of where the children live. These are children who survive in the most difficult circumstances, and face formidable barriers to be able to access schooling. These include disabled children, children of migrant workers, rural working children and urban street children.
C
hildren on the streets are brave but profoundly vulnerable survivors. They have often run away from drunken and intensely violent fathers, cruel step-parents, incest, starvation, parents who cannot or fail to support or take care of them, and even horrendous massacres. Some are lost or abandoned, or their parents have died or are in jail. They brave, usually with groups of other street children, the harsh adult twilight world of the streets. Like little adults, they negotiate with spirit and audacity the brutalised life of pavements, public parks, railway and bus stations, and waste dumps. They learn to live by their wits on the street, find food, work or beg to get money, fight for whatever they need, and fend off older bullies and the police. At an early age, they often learn to beg at places of worship or traffic lights or forage in rubbish heaps not only for food but also for various materials that can be sold for recycling. As they grow older, girls are often drawn into domestic or sometimes even casual street-based sex work, whereas boys may diversify from rag picking to working in garages and catering establishments. Children and youth of the street have no adult protection, usually because they have chosen to snap their ties with their families and run away, or because their guardians have died, or in jail, or are lost. They are the most vulnerable, because a child needs the care of adults as she grows. Children and youth on the street do retain contact with their families in the city, who may also live on the street or in slums. However, because of extreme poverty, substance abuse or irresponsible parentage, the children are left largely to their own devices. At an early age they learn to find food and earn money for themselves, and often for their families; they may beg, forage in rubbish heaps for food and recyclable materials. Street children live in the present moment and get what joy they can, when they can. Their backgrounds and experiences are colourful and the name ‘ rainbow children' (given to them by a pioneer in work with street children Sister Cyril Mooney) suits them well. You can also never hold a rainbow in the palm of your hand. Children from the street are free spirits. They rebel against being locked inside a gate, being supervised closely, and being corrected constantly. Therefore, they need intelligent and understanding guidance from adults that comes only with love. They prove to be able to learn and accept discipline when this is not accompanied by condemnation or rejection. Protective walls They are extremely resilient and some of them bounce back even after severe maltreatment. But all the time, they carry a well of emptiness in themselves because the significant adults in their lives have failed them. They seem to have created a space around themselves, which served the purpose of self protection when they were living on the street. They do not

easily allow others to come into this shell. The children often carry scars of earlier negative experiences of which they do not speak until they trust people around them. They sometimes show a strange combination of the maturity of adults coupled with the joy, vulnerability and innocence of a child. Street children typically suffer from many denials and vulnerabilities: these include deprivation of responsible adult protection; coercion to work to eat each day; work in unhealthy occupations on streets like rag-picking, begging and sex work; abysmally poor sanitary conditions; inadequate nutrition from begging, foraging and food stalls; a range of psychosocial stresses; physical abuse and sexual exploitation; and exposure to hard drug abuse. Street children have seen violence, adult betrayal and death, and have survived. If they did not have confidence in themselves, they could not have done what they have done — survive and overcome — and in planning interventions with street children, the new adults in their lives must not undermine that self-confidence, but rather nurture it into maturity and emotional stability. More and more children are taking to streets for a variety of reasons and an alarmingly miniscule proportion have been reached out to by state and non-
New strategies If the country is committed to bring these ‘last' children through the doors of our schools, and to retain them there, this would require the development of strategies that recognise and address those barriers that block a child from walking into schools, and staying there. This is even more imperative in the light of the obligations created by the fundamental right to education. In my next column, I will describe different approaches to working with street children. In our own work with these children over the last five years, my colleagues in Aman Biradari and I have learnt that they have many strengths which children in families often do not display, such as courage, spirit, initiative, self-reliance and also caring and sharing. We have seen that these children are also very wounded; battered physically, emotionally and sexually by the adult world. These include often those closest to them, such as abusive, violent, alcoholic or irresponsible parents. Under their cocky exteriors, we find that sometimes they carry a well of emptiness — and on occasion suppressed violence — within themselves, because the significant adults in their lives have so profoundly and comprehensively failed them. But we have found that many of these wounds can, with love, faith and persistence, heal and be overcome. We find that these children need intelligent and understanding guidance from adults that comes only with love. They prove to be able to learn — sometimes spectacularly — and accept discipline, when this is not accompanied by condemnation or rejection. We find in our care of our children who are formerly from the streets, that children are far more emotionally resilient than adults. And that love truly heals. Source: The Hindu

However, 43 years after King’s assassination, his dream has yet to be fulfilled. As we dedicate his memorial, each of us should look back on his dream for equality, justice and peace in our country and the world, and remember that King’s vision extended well beyond race. Just before his life abruptly ended, King had been working to direct national attention to poverty. In 1968, the Poor People’s Campaign took place in Washington, DC. King’s cohorts organised this protest after his death to demand that the government provide homes, jobs and resources to underprivileged Americans. Surely King would be disappointed to know that today 46.2 million Americans live in poverty – an all-time high since the 1950s when the government began recording such numbers. While the poverty rate will hopefully improve as the nation rebounds from the economic downturn, the racial wealth gap may remain static. The US Equal Employment Opportunity
Commission, for example, found that some US companies unlawfully discriminate by rejecting job applicants with poor credit histories. This disproportionately affects minorities: in 2007 the Federal Trade Commission found that 26 per cent of African Americans were in the group of people with the lowest ten per cent of credit scores, with ten per cent of Hispanics and seven per cent of whites. Minority groups not only face disadvantages in employment but also in the financial sector. The New York Times reported, in December 2009, that during the real estate boom, banking institutions gave blacks and Latinos sub-prime loans that were more likely to result in defaults, even when they qualified for low-interest loans. The resulting foreclosures were economically devastating to minorities. We would also do well to realise that King not only advocated for economic justice but also for peace. He objected to US involvement in the Vietnam War. In his 1967 speech, “Beyond Vietnam – A Time to Break Silence,” he characterised war as an unjust way to settle differences and criticised the government for prioritising war over
improving society. Even in cases of liberation, which was the argument used to support US involvement in the Vietnam War, King believed that our government should prioritise programmes of social improvement over military spending. Unfortunately, not much has changed, with US troops stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan for nearly a decade. The very public dedication of King’s memorial should serve as inspiration to live out King’s dream. But what would living out King ’s dream of racial and economic justice and peace look like? When it comes to combatting poverty in minority communities, companies could level the playing field for workers of colour by looking beyond credit history to consider applicants’ skill level and past work references. To assist with minority recruitment, companies could also reach out to established civil rights groups to help spread the word about job opportunities to minorities – as they did in the 1950s and 1960s. And banks should provide black and Latino communities the same opportunities for low-interest loans as their white counterparts. While I believe some money must

go toward defence for the purpose of homeland security, counterterrorism efforts and support for liberation movements abroad, in the spirit of King, this should not come at the expense of assistance for those in need. If defence remains the key priority for government funding, programmes that help those in need will suffer. In response to this reality, the Congressional Progressive Caucus released a fiscal plan called “The People’s Budget” in April, which did not pass the House of Representatives. This plan advocated the withdrawal of troops from Iraq and Afghanistan and cuts military funding. Unlike the budget plans released by the GOP and President Barack Obama, this plan did not advocate reducing funding for human needs programmes. To truly live King ’s legacy, we should support programmes and practices like these – ones that ensure a just, equitable and peaceful future for all Americans.

World Food Prize Recognizes "Leadership in Agriculture"
P
olicymakers around the world need to step up their critical efforts to combat hunger, malnutrition, and poverty by providing greater support for agriculture, according to researchers with Worldwatch Institute's Nourishing the Planet project. As the awarding of the annual World Food Prize approaches, the project acknowledges the important contribution that the Prize makes in recognizing policymakers and leaders who have invested in their countries' agricultural futures. This year's award is being given to two former heads of state to highlight the importance of transformational leadership in effecting positive change and improving people's lives. The World Food Prize, awarded each year since 1994 and sponsored by businessman and philanthropist John Ruan, recognizes the achievements of individuals who have advanced human development by improving the quality, quantity, or availability of food in the world, thereby helping to boost global food security. This year, the prize will be awarded to John Agyekum Kufuor, the former president of Ghana, and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the former president of Brazil, for their outstanding achievements in reducing hunger in their countries. The ceremony will take place during the Borlaug International Symposium in Des Moines, Iowa, from October 12 to 14. "As the global population is expected to hit 7 billion by the end of this month, it is increasingly important that food security become a higher priority on country agendas," said Robert Engelman, Worldwatch's President. "Leaders like Kufuor and da Silva show us that political will and government action can reduce hunger. The opportunities to do so around the world are immense." "It is important to acknowledge such high-level leadership in agriculture at a time when there are still more than 1 billion hungry people in the world, and when food prices are high and increasingly volatile," said Danielle Nierenberg, director of Worldwatch's Nourishing the Planet project (www. NourishingthePlanet.org). "Agriculture is not often a top priority for policymakers----in Africa, only seven nations invest 10 percent or more of their national budgets in the sector. Now, more than ever, it is essential for policymakers to support sustainable agricultural innovations in order to improve food security." Nierenberg notes that continued neglect from governments is putting greater strain on farmers, especially as they confront the risks of climate change and increasing water scarcity. Both of this year's World Food Prize recipients have made considerable contributions to their countries' agricultural sectors. Under former Ghanaian President Kufuor's tenure, both the share of people suffering from hunger and the share of people living on less than $1 dollar a day were halved. Economic reforms strengthened public investment in food and agriculture, which was a major factor behind the quadrupling of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) between 2003 and 2008. Because 60 percent of Ghana's population depends directly on agriculture, the sector is

hile the United Nations is in debate over Palestinians’ request for UN membership, the US has already announced their decision to veto. But the over two thirds of Americans who are neither Jewish nor Evangelical should consider saying yes. It may not solve every problem but it could increase the prospects for successful negotiations between Palestine and Israel. The US has vowed to veto the Palestinian request for membership in the United Nations, at great risk to its reputation in the Muslim world. Diplomats are scrambling for a solution – but the majority of Americans stand in the way. Many Americans’ support for Israel is automatic and comprehensive. They believe Americans owe Israel special support because of the Holocaust. They respect Israel’s pioneer spirit, entrepreneurial economy and robust democracy; and their support only strengthened after the attacks on 9/11. What those people are mostly not, however, is Jewish or Evangelical Christian. Not, in other words, a member of either of the two religious groups which supposedly underpin America’s knee-jerk, dogmatic support for Israel. The truth is, support for Israel is far broader, and if a policy breakthrough is ever going to happen, it has got to come from the majority of Americans whose reasons for supporting Israel – assuming they’ve ever

T
he rise of China is the definitive economic and political story of the time, yet the 1911 Revolution should not be overlooked as it was the catalyst that enabled the nation to terminate more than 2,000 years of imperial rule — one of the longest periods of autocratic rule in the world. China commemorated the centennial anniversary of the 1911 Revolution, or Xinhai Revolution, with a grand ceremony on Sunday. The legacies of the revolution are set to inspire the world's most populous country with an ancient civilization to continue swimming with the tide of the times, to keep marching on the road to becoming an empowered modern nation. The 1911 Revolution, which began on October 10, 1911 with an armed uprising, ended the imperial rule established by Emperor Qinshihuang in

critical for the country's economic development. In addition to the economic reforms, Ghana's Agricultural Extension Service helped alleviate hunger and poverty by educating farmers and ultimately doubling cocoa production between 2002 and 2005. And the country's School Feeding Program, which began in 2005, ensures that school children receive one nutritiously and locally produced meal every day. The program has transformed domestic agriculture by supporting irrigation, improving seeds and crop diversification, making tractors more affordable for farmers, and building feed roads, silos, and cold stores for horticultural crops. In Brazil, among the major goals of former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's presidency were alleviating poverty, improving educational opportunities for children, providing greater inclusion of the poor in society, and ensuring that "every Brazilian has food to eat three times a day." The government implemented policies and actions known as the "Zero Hunger Programs" to provide cash aid to poor families (guaranteeing a minimum income and enabling access to basic goods and services); to distribute food to poor families through community restaurants, assisted-living facilities, day-care centers, and related organizations; and to provide nutritious meals to children in public schools. As a result, the number of hungry people in Brazil was halved, and the share of Brazilians living in extreme poverty decreased from 12 percent in 2003 to 4.8 percent in 2009. Not just in Ghana and Brazil, but around the world, policymakers, farmers, activists, and other leaders are investing in agricultural innovations to reduce hunger and alleviate poverty----although
many of these efforts need to be scaled up. During 201011, researchers from Worldwatch's Nourishing the Planet project traveled to 25 countries in sub-Saharan Africa and uncovered a rich and diverse treasure trove of innovations from farmers' groups, private voluntary organizations, universities, and even agribusiness companies. Their findings were published in the Institute's flagship report, State of the World 2011: Innovations that Nourish the Planet. In Uganda, for example, Project DISC (Developing Innovations in School Cultivation) is teaching students how to grow, cook, and eat native vegetables, including spiderwiki and amaranth. Not only are the students learning how to cook and provide for themselves, but the classes are giving them a reason to stay in rural areas and become farmers, instead of migrating to the cities. In other countries, including Niger, Kenya, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, farmers are learning how to increase their harvests and get more "crop per drop." In Benin, the Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF) has introduced solar-powered drip irrigation that is improving nutrition and raising incomes for farmers. After one year of implementing the innovation, villagers were eating three to five servings of vegetables a day, and children were going to school instead of spending time carrying water to the fields. Nourishing the Planet praises the leaders and policymakers-including former presidents Kufuor and da Silva-who have invested in agriculture and helped to reduce hunger and poverty in their countries. But with some 1 billion hungry people remaining in the world, much greater investment and policy support is needed to boost agriculture and improve global food security.
Eye Care for All
W
ORLD SIGHT DAY is celebrated worldwide on the 2nd Thursday of October since the year 2000. The theme for this year world Sight Day is ‘Eye Care for All’. On this day general awareness on Eye Care and importance of sight is sought to be disseminated to the general public. The District Health Society (National Programme for Control of Blindness) Kohima District would like to enlighten the public about one very rampant eye condition afflicting mainly young girls of our state. In the last 2 years or so a new form of chronic conjunctivitis has been sweeping across the Eye care centre’s in our state. It is characterized by copious sticky discharge throughout the day and night and tends to cause matting or gluing of the eyelashes in the morning. There will be complaints of blurred vision due to this sticky discharge as well as the swelling on the inside of the eyelids. Most will also have significant itching. On examining the eye, there is intense conjunctival Hypertrophy (ie swelling and proliferation of the membrane covering the white part of the eyeball) and redness most predominantly on the lower fornix (ie the part of the eye which becomes exposed when the lower eyelid is pulled down with the patient looking up). The conjunctival surface looks like that of a ripe strawberry and sometimes it may be difficult to make the exposed abnormally swollen tissue go back into the eye. It is interesting to note that 99% of the patients are girls between the ages of 15 to 20 years with signs of use of eyeliners. Many usually say that they have been suffering from watering, discharge, itching, blurred vision for many months’ even years which distinguishes it from the common epidemic conjunctivitis which affects people of all ages and both sexes and becomes cured by a week or so. This new eye disease predominantly affecting young girls is not confined to towns but has spread to the smaller townships and even villages. It is very strongly associated with the use of eyeliners although a clinical scientific study would be required to prove it. It occurs in girls who insist that they use only branded eyeliners which underline the ever present dangers of fake branded good in the market. The less said about non branded products the better. The disease becomes less common in the 20+ (plus) group and is rare beyond 25+(plus), which is consistent with the fact the young teenagers have a very reactive immune response system which exhibit an exaggerated response to any allergen. This condition requires prolonged treatment sometimes more than 2 months for complete cure. The good news is it responds very well to treatment particularly when the offending allergen (ie the eyeliners) is withdrawn. Therefore young girls need to be made aware about the dangers of the use of the eyeliners which can cause prolonged discomfort to the eyes and may even leave permanent visual impairment.

thought about it – spring from other sources. It is unlikely many American Jews or Christian Evangelicals will rethink their backing for Israel – certainly not overnight – and there is no reason why they should. Whether devout or secular, the two percent of Americans who are Jewish overwhelmingly support Israel for unimpeachable reasons grounded in the most profound sympathetic identification. And while it is worth debating the interpretation of scripture accepted by the quarter of Americans who are Evangelical – challenging the identification of God’s promises to the Jewish people and signs of Jesus’ impending return with the secular State of Israel – it would be foolish to expect Evangelicals not to vote along the lines of their beliefs. But for the over two thirds of Americans who are neither Jewish nor Evangelical, relations with Israel should be governed by the same principles that govern our relations with Laos, Finland, or Bolivia: look to cooperate, but treat them as states with their own interests, and follow our own. Once you think in terms of traditional national interests, it is hard to see why America is so uniformly supportive of Tel Aviv. True, Israel has a preternaturally powerful
military (into which we pump billions of dollars every year), but it is almost laughably unavailable to us as an ally. During the Gulf War, we had to plead with the Israel Defense Force to stay in barracks, to avoid breaking our coalition with Arab states. Israeli soldiers can’t fight alongside Americans in Iraq and Afghanistan, lest we confirm Al-Qaeda’s rants about a Jewish-Crusader alliance. And the oil lubricating the world’s economies is not underneath Israel. It’s true Israel has a vibrant democracy, but it is hardly an examplary model for the region, since Arabs focus on Israel’s decidedly undemocratic occupation of Palestine. In any event, for decades we have shown little interest in democracy in the rest of the Middle East, because we knew Arab democracy could jeopardize Israel. Pro-Israeli pundits have long peddled the intellectual snake oil that popular anti-Israel sentiment was just ginned up by dictators to distract their own oppressed populations. The Arab spring has put paid to that nonsense: In Egypt and elsewhere, newly free Arabs are freely rethinking the old dictatorships’ US-sponsored status quo with Israel. Our lockstep alliance with Israel yields remarkably few benefits and extracts enormous
costs. And it is lockstep: don’t let recent attacks calling President Obama an unreliable ally of Israel fool you – that is the narcissism of small differences. In the monoculture of American policy, the choice is between unquestioning fidelity to Israel and unflinching fidelity to Israel. The best proof is this week’s UN debate. There is certainly something embarrassing in the spectacle of President Obama announcing his intention to veto Palestinian statehood from the same UN platform on which, last year, he called for a Palestinian state within twelve months. The UN crisis is not being caused by the Palestinians’ decision to seek statehood, but by the US’ insistence on vetoing it. All our diplomatic energy has been on avoiding a vote – not for one moment have we considered doing anything else. There is a clear alternative: The US could actually vote for Palestinian statehood. A willingness to vote yes would hardly solve every problem, but Palestinian flexibility would be exponentially increased if the unthinkable prize of an affirmative US vote were on offer – and so might Israel’s willingness once it realized America’s support was no longer guaranteed. Indeed, a vote might increase the prospects for success-

ful negotiations if it were conditioned on each side – or just the Palestinians to start – agreeing to recognize the other without specifying the frontier. Each could identify one small area that it would unconditionally recognize as part of the other state – say, north Tel Aviv and Jericho – but without conceding anything else now. Two states west of the Jordan, borders TBD. That’s not going to happen. But that’s exactly what Americans need to ask themselves: why isn’t it? This week’s vote is being portrayed as a crisis. But the vote isn’t the problem. The total impossibility of voting for Palestinian statehood – even though US policy actually favours a Palestinian state alongside Israel, ‘side by side in peace and security’ – is the problem. Our inability to imagine, let alone articulate, a yes vote is what must change – and only Americans with no sectarian dog in the fight can do the imagining. Political scientists tell us that tiny but motivated special interests often dominate policy, because the unmotivated majority cedes the field. When it comes to the Middle East, that ‘special interest’ includes nearly one-third of Americans. But big as that group is, its interests are special indeed – parochial and grounded in religious sensibilities the majority of Americans don’t share. It is time for the other two-thirds to ask what their interests are. Think about it, America – and then write to your congressman.
Marking the birth of modern China
221 B.C. and established a republican government, the first in Asia. Behind the revolution were a burgeoning democratic movement and the rising influence of western civilization. The revolution not only rid Chinese men of the humiliating ponytails and women of the excruciatingly painful foot-binding, but also removed the people's blind faith in the emperor and fear of foreign powers. The event has since been emancipating people's minds from thousands of years of oppression and self-enclosure. Over the past century, the nation has united to fight for its destiny and independence. From the Opium War (1840-1842) to the Xinhai Revolution, patriots from all walks of life have always come together to fight imperial autocracy and foreign invasion, with the aim of national rejuvenation and building a country that is respected by the world. Now, China is a rising power in sharp contrast with 100 years ago, when any country could bully it. Rejuvenation is the common will of a civilization that has existed for over 5,000 years, and no one can halt the process. The 1911 Revolution, led by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, overthrew imperial rule and opened the gate for China's modernisation. Yet the dreams of Sun were not fully accomplished, as leaders of the revolution were from the capitalist class and the masses of workers and farmers were not given full play. They still lived in poverty, their democracy and free-

dom not guaranteed. Ten years after the 1911 Revolution, the Communist Party of China (CPC) was founded. It took the banner from Sun and shouldered the responsibility of rejuvenating the nation. History has proven that only those who fight for the interests of the people can lead a country to success. Looking back at the past 100 years, it is clear that the Chinese nation swam with the tide of the times, moving forward in the right direction. In world history, China was among
the first countries that shifted from a slave society to feudalism and moved toward advanced technologies and outstanding institutions and culture. However, imperial China failed to embrace reform while western countries overthrew feudalism and emancipated the productive forces after the Renaissance. The failure of the Middle Kingdom was a result of standing still and refusing to make progress by insisting on imperial autocracy. The 1911 Revolution was a positive response from China, a result of the coun-
try's pioneers applying lessons learned from the outside world. It was also a move from an agricultural society to an industrial society, from autocracy to democracy, and from the emperor's courtyard to the home of ordinary people. But it failed to establish a modern system to eliminate long-standing malpractices and push forward the country's development. China was mired in civil wars and foreign invasions in the first half of the 20th century before the mantle of leadership was handed over to the CPC. Economic progress Looking to the future, the Chinese people have realized they cannot rest on their achievements. They need to be vigilant against unexpected changes and learn from advanced civilizations with open minds. They must exert effort for domestic economic construction rather than seek world hegemony. The rejuvenation of the Chinese nation will be a long and difficult process, and development still deserves to be a top priority. Although China has become the world's second largest economy, it remains a developing country, and its GDP per capita ranks at only about 100th in the world. Poverty and backwardness can still be seen in many parts of the country. And the ancient feudal tradition, including the rule of man in certain areas, is still one of the major obstacles hindering China from realizing its modernisation goal. During his speech, entitled “The
Path to China's Future,” at Britain's renowned Royal Society in June, Premier Wen Jiabao said: “China was long under the influence of feudalism. After the founding of New China, the country went through the turmoil of the decade-long Cultural Revolution. Since China opened itself, some new developments and problems have occurred.” Promoting democracy, improving the legal system and strengthening effective oversight of power remains a long and arduous task for the nation. To commemorate the 1911 Revolution with a keen sense of responsibility and democracy, people should spur social progress. The more the people participate in social management and public affairs, the greater the momentum will be on social progress. As for China's development, worldwide observers need to take a more patient and milder attitude. It is better to bear in mind that China has never feared difficulties and is pushing forward reform and opening up with greater resolve. China has conformed to the universal values of humanity and is on its way to becoming a modern and progressive country that seeks common development and interests with other countries. One hundred years after the revolution, China is again at a crucial point. The world is undergoing fundamental changes, with scientific and technological revolution and economic globalisation progressing every day. Faced with the financial crisis and other problems, the future of the world is uncertain. Only by swimming with the tide of the times can China achieve complete rejuvenation and make greater contributions to humanity.

India’s 1st robotic liver transplant successful
New Delhi, OctOber 13 (iANs): In the first such surgery in India, doctors at a hospital near here have performed a robotic liver transplant to save the life of a four-year-old child. Doctors say it is only the third operation of its kind in the world. The surgery was conducted last month at the Medanta Medicity hospital in the national capital’s Gurgaon suburb in Haryana, doctors said here Thursday. The Da-Vinci robot was used by the doctors on Rahmatullah, 36, who donated 20 percent of his liver to his nephew Ziad, whose organ had turned cancerous and had to be removed. “Robotic surgery is usually performed for kidney, heart and gynaecological operations. But it’s use in liver transplant not only increased the precision but also reduced surgeryrelated troubles,” said Medanta Liver Institute chairman A.S. Soin, who led the team of surgeons. Ziad, who was living with his parents in Oman capital Muscat, was suffering from tyrosinemia, a rare genetic disorder due to which the liver is unable to digest proteins. “Even when Ziad developed rickets, which is one of the symptoms of this disease, the doctors were not able to diagnose his condition,” said Neelam Mohan, Medanta’s director of pediatric gastroenterology. Ziad developed rickets at age of two, but his liver condition was detected much later. Ziad’s father Mohd. Zakir Hussain, a pharmacist, and his mother Mehe Zabin, who are originally from Karnataka, were not able to afford the surgery in Muscat and decided to come to India. By then, Ziad’s liver had turned cancerous and hence had to completely removed. However, his parents’ blood group differed from Ziad’s and so his uncle Rahmatullah came forward for the liver donation. “The donor in a liver transplant undergoes the surgery only for saving someone’s life. A robotic surgery encouraged his uncle for the donation as it has greater precision and leaves a mere three to four inch scar,” Soin explained. The operation cost Rs.15 lakh and this was raised through charity. The cost of robotic surgery on the donor costs nearly Rs.75,000 to 80,000 more than a normal donor surgery. Doctors, however, say the cost will come down with time as more robotic surgeries are conducted. “In another year or 18 months, the cost difference will come down to around Rs.25,000,” said Soin. “It costs Rs.1 lakh just to start the robot. If three or four surgeries are conducted in a line, the cost will automatically come down,” he explained.

Terror plot foiled in Ambala
AmbAlA (hAryANA), OctOber 13 (Pti): A possible terror attack was foiled just days before the Diwali festival with the recovery of over 5-kg explosives and detonators from a car parked outside the Ambala Cantt Railway Station, police said on Thursday. Acting on a tip-off, a joint police team of Delhi and Haryana found the explosives in a blue Indica car parked outside the railway station on Wednesday night. “Five detonators, two timer devices, five kg explosives in two packets and two batteries were seized from the car lying parked outside the railway station,” Haryana’s Director General of Police, Ranjiv Dalal, who along with senior officials of Haryana Police rushed to the spot, said. Bomb disposal squads were summoned from Madhuban and other neighbouring places. A box of sweets was found lying in the car, which showed that it was purchased from Jammu’s Bari Brahmna area besides two newspapers from Jammu and Kashmir. Fake registration The car was bearing a fake Haryana registration number and police suspect that it was a stolen one. When asked if the intended target of the terror plot could have been Delhi, Dalal said, “Senior officers from various investigating and security agencies are here. We are probing every angle“. As the cantonment area is also located in Ambala, police would also be probing if the target could have been a

New Delhi, OctOber 13 (Pti): Delhi Police on Thursday said that Lashker—e—Taiba (LeT) and Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) had joined hands to plot a terror strike in the national capital ahead of Diwali following the recovery of an explosive-laden car in Haryana’s Ambala. The seizure of the car in Ambala last evening came following a trail of inputs provided by central intelligence agencies that a car was headed to Delhi through Ambala with explosives and detonators. “WehadinputsthatanLeTmoduleactiveinJammu&Kashmir was planning to strike in Delhi. Investigations were done and found that the explosives were meant for BKI and to be used in Delhi. We received a specific input yesterday about the movement,” Arun Kampani, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell), told reporters here. Delhi Police informed their Haryana counterparts and all parking lots and the highway were checked before the car was traced to the parking lot in Ambala railway station. Surveillance was kept by police to check whether anybody would come to take the car but till midnight nobody turned up. “Ambala was the place where the explosives were meant to be exchanged. Bomb disposal squads and forensic experts from Madhubani FSL rushed to the spot. Five kg of black explosives contained in three packets wrapped with brown adhesive tapes were recovered,” Kampani said. Five detonators contained in a plastic box wrapped with brown adhesive tapes, two ‘ABCD’ timers in a plastic box hidden in the cavity of window rolling machine of the front door of the car, registration papers of the car, two toll receipts of Shambu Barrier and Ladowal and some newspapers of Jammu & Kashmir were recovered. The number plate on the car and the RC recovered were not the same, a senior police official said. Asked whether the owner of the car has been traced, Kampani said they will soon find him but refused to give any details.

of any more explosives, the sources said. In view of the approaching Diwali festival, vigil has been stepped up around key installations and crowded public places including the railway stations in the state.
Why no action on PM’s 2G letter to Raja: Superme Court
New Delhi, OctOber 12 (iANs): The Supreme Court Thursday asked why no action was taken on a letter from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to his then telecom minister A. Raja on award of airwaves and felt that the severity of the case in question otherwise could have been different. Hearing the bail pleas of two corporate executives accused in the second generation (2G) spectrum case, Justice G.S. Singhvi and Justice H.L. Dattu also observed that the gravity of the alleged crime could have been different if action had been taken on the letter. The letter written Nov 3, 2007 had raised several questions on the manner in which Raja was proposing to allocate the precious airwaves to telecom players and had also conveyed the industry’s apprehensions in this regard. The letter favoured auction of airwaves. But a reply the next day
from Raja, now in judicial custody as the prime accused in the case, clearly said he will not change the policy of first-come-first-served to allocate the scarce resource but assured full transparency in the process. Both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) said the apex court’s observations were serious and demanded a full explanation on the matter from the government. Appearing for the prosecution, Additional Solicitor General Haren Rawal sought to draw a line of distinction between the action of Raja and the suggested inaction on the content of the letter written by the prime minister, which had favoured transparent auction. “The charges of criminality would have still remained because of the decision taken by then telecom minister,” he said, seeking to suggest that it was Raja who decided
not to change his policy stand and decided to allot spectrum than to go for an auction. The court, which was specifically hearing the bail pleas of Swan Telecom’s Vinod Goenka and Unitech Wireless’ Sanjay Chandra, also asked the prosecutors why it was opposing the bail please of the 14 accused, which includes Rajya Sabha member Kanimozhi. The hearing resumes Friday. The other accused in judicial custody include Raja’s former personal secretary R.K. Chandolia, former telecom secretary Siddhartha Behura and Swan Telecom’s Shahid Usman Balwa. Also named co-accused and in custody are Reliance Group’s Gautam Doshi, Surendra Pipara and Hari Nayar, Kalaignar TV’s Sharad Kumar, Cineyug Film`s Karim Morani and the directors of Kusegaon, Asif Balwa and Rajeev B. Agarwal. During the hearing Thursday,
Additional Solicitor General Haren Rawal also sought to clarify on some remarks by Law Minister Salman Khurshidm, over which the apex court had taken exception a day earlier and wanted to know the correct position. Khurshid had said investments in India were suffering since businessmen were behind bars but Rawal sought to clarify that the minister’s remarks were not specific to the present case and were a general observation. “He did not refer to the present case in any way. Whenever the government wants to take a stand, it does so through an affidavit or its counsel. The minister’s remarks were a result of a spontaneous response to questions from the media,” Rawal said. “We just wanted to know if it is correct or not (Khurshid’s statement). We have already said nobody can influence us,” the apex court bench observed.

New Delhi, OctOber 13 (Pti): A Hindu woman or girl will have equal property rights along with other male relatives for any partition made in intestate succession after September 2005, the Supreme Court has ruled. A bench of justices R. M. The three main contenders for the seat are Kuldeep Bishnoi of the Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC), the son of sitting MP and former chief minister Bhajan Lal, whose death caused the by-poll; Indian National Lok Dal’s (INLD) Ajay Chautala, the son of former chief minister Om Prakash Chautala; and threetime former MP Jai Prakash of the Congress. Bishnoi has the support of the Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP) for this election. The election hit the national

There was heavy security to ensure the smooth conduct of voting; for the first time video-filming of all 1,506 polling centres was done. A total of 340 polling booths had been declared hyper-sensitive while 387 polling booths were declared sensitive by the election commission. Future of youth safe in Rahul’s hands: Scindia Uma wants Advani as PM
Jotiraditya Scindia and Rahul Gandhi . (File Photo)
New Delhi, OctOber 13 (AgeNcies): Jyotiraditya Scindia, one of the young ministers at the Centre, feels that the future of the youth is safe in the hands of Rahul Gandhi
but does not want to enter into the debate whether he should take over as Prime Minister soon. Maintaining that the issue of Gandhi becoming PM is not something on which he can
voice his opinion but only the party and he have to decide, the minister, however, sees “tremendous qualities” of leadership. “It is not some thing we can voice our opinion. It is something which both the party and individual have to decide,” 40-year-old Scindia said. He was reacting to questions on the debate over Rahul Gandhi becoming Prime Minister and more so in the context of Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s statement last week that Gandhi is Congress’ future leader. “In him (Gandhi) we see tremendous qualities of leadership and leadership not only at the visionary level but also at the one to one level. The ability in a short span of time to analyse the problem and visualise the solution. All I can say that future of youth of the country is safer in his hands,” Scindia said. He said that Gandhi was in many ways their leader, specifically for the paradigm that he has set and his ability to reach out to people. “His ability to
stand through thick and thin with the economically weaker section, with the downtrodden, to take up the cause and fight for its logical conclusion. I think these all things that inspire a comparatively younger person like me as well,” Scindia added. On Lokpal, the Minister of State for Commerce and Industries said he would back an ombudsman but does not feel that it will be “one stop solution” to check corruption. “I am for a very strong Lokpal. All of us are for strong Lokpal. But then it is not to say that Lokpal is going to be one stop solution for all corruption in this country. I think, we as individual citizen of the country also need to do our bit to be able to stop corruption,” Scindia said. Describing corruption as “societal malaise”, he said, “All of us would like stringent action to be taken against those who are culpable and I think only when fear of action is put into all of us that most of us will desist from such activities”. “I don’t think that solution is something (we can get)
at a click of your finger. I think if you want a long term solution for this, it should not be top down, it should be bottom-up,” he said. Scindia said the UPA government is in the process of drafting a strong and effective Lokpal based on the inputs given by a number of people including civil society groups. “We are committed that in the winter session of Parliament, we will be submitting the new draft of the strong Lokpal Bill,” the Minister of State said. When asked about allegations of “governance paralysis” in UPA II as against its first tenure, he felt that perhaps “media focus on the negative factors” contributed to such an image. “I think the environment is what we make of. Some of the responsibility lie with all of you (media).... There are a lot of wonderful stories in our country but what sells, unfortunately, is the sensational. “There’s a lot we have done and there’s a lot we need to do. In many ways, there are a lot of wonderful stories. We need to broadcast those stories,” he said.
New Delhi, OctOber 13 (AgeNcies): Firebrand BJP leader Uma Bharti on Thursday extended her full support to party veteran LK Advani’s candidature as Prime Minister, saying that he is the only leader who can challenge the UPA government. Uma, the former chief minister of MP said, “Advani-ji is the only leader who can displace the Congress-led UPA government at the centre. Advani’s yatra would bring an end to UPA rule and pave way for government with Advani as the PM.” Her reaction came shortly after another BJP big shot Yashwant Sinha expressed his prime ministerial aspirations and said there are many “capable” Prime Ministerial candidates in the party. However, Sinha said that a decision on whether or not to project anybody would be taken close to the Lok Sabha elections only. Sinha also attempted to downplay the reports of differences between Advani and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. “It’s merely a media creation and nobody is talking so within the BJP,” the former Union Minister told reporters on the reported
tussle between Advani and Modi because of their perceived ambitions for Prime Ministership. “Since, the debate within Congress is gaining ground that AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi could take over the mantle from PM Manmohan Singh before completion of the present term of UPA ministry, media, in a balancing act, has created similar plot in the BJP too,” he said. Asked whether Advani or Modi was a better candidate for Prime Ministership, Sinha shot back, saying there are many leaders in the BJP capable of occupying the PM’s post. He, however, did not identify any of them. On whether he could also be a candidate, the former Finance Minister said, “Why not. Does anybody have doubt on my capability?”. When pointed out that Advani’s Jan rath yatra was seen as linked to his Prime Ministerial ambitions, Sinha sought to emphasise that the two were not linked. Describing the yatra as a political movement against corruption, he said it should not be seen from narrow prism of “Modi-versus-Advani” fight for Prime Ministership.

Amnesty calls on Canada to arrest Bush
George W Bush
LOndOn, OctObER 13 (AFP): Amnesty International called on Canadian authorities Wednesday to arrest and prosecute George W Bush, saying the former US president authorized "torture" as he directed the US -led war on terror. Bush is expected to attend an economic summit in Surrey in Canada's westernmost British Columbia province on October 20. London-based Amnesty made a case for Bush's legal responsibility for a series of human rights violations in a memorandum submitted last month to Canadian authorities but only now released to the media. "Canada is required by its international obligations to arrest and prosecute former president Bush given his responsibility for crimes under international law including torture," Amnesty's Susan Lee said in a statement. "As the US authorities have, so far, failed to bring former president Bush to justice, the international community must step in. A failure by Canada to take action during his visit would violate the UN Convention Against Torture and demonstrate contempt for fundamental human rights." Lee said. Amnesty, backed by the International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group, says Bush authorized the use of "enhanced interrogation techniques" and "waterboarding" on detainees held in secret by the Central Intelligence Agency between 2002 and 2009. The detention program included "torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment (such as being forced to stay for hours in painful positions and sleep deprivation), and enforced disappearances," it alleged. Amnesty's memorandum cites several cases of alleged torture of individuals detained at the Guantanamo Bay naval facility, in Afghanistan and in Iraq, by the US military. They include that of Zayn al Abidin Muhammed Husayn (known as Abu Zubaydah) and 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, both arrested in Pakistan, and subjected to at least 266 applications of waterboarding between them from 2002 to 2003, according to the CIA inspector general, cited by Amnesty.

U.S. not sincere about Afghan peace: Haqqanis ISLAMAbAd, OctObER 13 (REUtERS): The United States was not sincere about peace in Afghanistan when it signaled it would remain open to exploring a settlement that includestheHaqqaninetwork, one of the group's senior commanders said on Thursday. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton suggested in comments this week that Washington would not shut the door to the Haqqanis -blamed for high-profile attacks in Afghanistan -- in any peace arrangement. The Haqqanis saw the remarks as an attempt to divide Afghan insurgent groups and believed only the top leaders of the Taliban should negotiate, said the commander. "We had rejected many such offers from the United States in the past and reject this new offer as we are not authorized to decide the future of Afghanistan," he told Reuters. In an interview with Reuters, Clinton did not spell out who the United States believes should speak for Afghanistan's insurgent groups and said it was too soon to tell whether any of them were serious about reconciliation. Inclusion of the Haqqani network in a hoped-for peace deal -- now a chief objective in the Obama administration's Afghanistan policy after a decade of war -- is a controversial idea in Washington. Officials blame the group for last month's attack on the U.S. embassy in Kabul and a truck bombing that injured scores of American soldiers. The CIA has been using remotely piloted drone aircraft to hunt down leaders of the Haqqani network in northwest Pakistan, where it says the group enjoys sanctuaries. A suspected U.S. drone strike killed a close aide of the commander of the Haqqa-
nis in Pakistan's North Waziristan region on the Afghan border on Thursday, intelligence officials said. The strike came as U.S. special representative Marc Grossman arrived in Islamabad to meet top officials and mend ties strained by recent U.S. allegations that Pakistan is supporting the Haqqanis. Jalil Haqqani, 33, who helped organize the Haqqanis' operations, was one of four militants killed when two missiles allegedly fired by a U.S. drone struck a house in a village, the officials said. The senior Haqqani commander denied the report and said Jalil had no link to the group. The Haqqanis, led by Sirajuddin Haqqani, have emerged as a major source of tension in U.S.-Pakistani ties, with former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen calling them a "veritable arm" of Pakistan's spy agency, the Directorate of InterServices Intelligence (ISI). "Jalil was a highly trusted companion of Sirajuddin. He had been with the Haqqani group for a long time and was tasked with handling communications," one intelligence official said. The official added that Jalil was Sirajuddin's cousin. In a second attack, a suspected U.S. drone fired three missiles at a group of militants in the South Waziristan border region, killing six, according to intelligence officials. Pakistani officials have angrily denied U.S. allegations that the country is helping militant groups such as the Haqqani network strike at NATO and Afghan targets in Afghanistan, including the September 13 attack on the Ameri- King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck, left and Queen Jetsun Pema pose after they were married at the Punakha Dzong, in Punakha, Bhutan on Thursday, October 13. 1,027 for one: Israel, Hamas in prisoner swap
JERUSALEM, OctObER 13 (PtI): Israel waited with bated breath the homecoming of its soldier Gilad Shalit, who has been under Hamas captivity for 1,935 days, after a swap deal was inked between Tel Aviv and the radical Islamist group under which the Israelis will release 1,027 Palestinian prisoners. The deal that was struck after five years of intense negotiations that have repeatedly collapsed in finger-pointing and violence, received support from majority of the Israeli cabinet. Twenty six ministers voted in favour of the deal while three opposed in a hurriedly called urgent meeting to approve the deal on Tuesday evening. Foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman, national infrastructure minister Uzi Landau, and vice prime minister Moshe Ya’alon of
prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party, voted against the proposal. “We have concluded arduous negotiations with Hmaas to release Gilad Shalit. He will be coming home in the next few years,” Netanyahu said in a live address after the deal was signed. According to the agreement framework presented by the country’s internal security agency Shin Bet’s chief Yoram Cohen, the deal will see the release of 1,027 security prisoners, many among them with “blood on their hands”, but will still exclude top Hamas prisoners Israel deemed too dangerous to release. The deal, Netanyahu brought before the cabinet included, at first, the release of 450 Palestinian prisoners, including 280 with life sentences. 110 Palestinian
prisoners will be released to their homes in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, out of whom 55 are Hamas men, with the rest belonging to Fatah and the other Palestinian groups. According to the deal, 131 Gaza residents will be released back to the coastal Strip, many of whom are reportedly top Hamas operatives. Another 203 prisoners will be expelled from the West Bank, 40 of whom will be deported overseas and the rest to Gaza. In addition, six Israeli Arab prisoners, who have been serving for many years, will also be released and sent to their homes. The deal also specifies the release of 27 Palestinian female inmates, most of whom will be sent back to their homes except Ahlam Tamimi and Amna Muna, who will be deported.
Confusion over capture of Gaddafi’s son
tRIPOLI, OctObER 13 (AP): A Libyan spokesman said revolutionary forces have captured some fighters close to one of Moammar Gadhafi's sons in the fugitive leader's hometown but that he has no information that the son himself has been seized. Jalal el-Gallal, a spokesman for the National Transitional Council in the eastern city of Benghazi, said on Wednesday that his office called commanders in the besiegedcityofSirteand"sofar as we are concerned there is no confirmation that Muatassim Gadhafi has been captured." El-Gallal was commenting on reports that the son had been seized, which prompted heavy celebratory gunfire in Tripoli and the eastern city of Benghazi. ing in Sirte and that is the reason for the fierce resistance. Muatassim was Libya's national security adviser and had a strong role in the military and security forces under his father's regime. Libya's de facto leader, Mustafa AbdulJalil, said earlier Wednesday he expected to declare total victory in less than a week, which would pave the way for a new interim government to be named to guide the oil-rich North African nation to elections within eight months. "I
hope that liberation will be declared in less than a week, after we free Sirte, and within less than a month we will form a transitional government and theyouthandwomenwillhave a role in that," Abdul-Jalil said atajointnewsconferencewith visitingTunisianPrimeMinister Caid Essebsi in Benghazi. Gadhafi is still on the run and his supporters also hold the desert enclave of Bani Walid. But the transitional leadership says Sirte's capture will give them full control of
the country's ports and harbors, allowing them to move forward with efforts to restore normalcy and establish a democracy. The International Committee of the Red Cross warned that thousands of civilians were still trapped inside Sirte without sufficient food, cleanwaterandotherbasic necessities. Red Cross staff evacuated 25 war-wounded and other patients, including a newborn baby in its incubator, from the main Ibn Sina hospital in the coastal city on Monday and Tuesday. Few doctors or nurses remained, the Red Cross said in a statement. "The situation inside the hospital is very chaotic and distressing," the ICRC's Patrick Schwaerzler said. "When we arrived there, we found patients with severe burns and shrapnel wounds. Some had sustained recent amputations. A few were halfconscious. They were lying among crowds of other people who were also asking us for help." The hospital has been partly destroyed and is no longer functional, he added.

F1 champ Vettel has more to achieve in Korea
Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel of Germany, left, smiles at the team garage ahead of Sunday's Korean Formula One Grand Prix at the Korean International Circuit in Yeongam, South Korea on Thursday. (AP Photo)
YEONGAM, OctObEr 13, (AP): Having already clinched his second straight world championship, Sebastian Vettel says he has plenty of work to do in the remaining four Formula One races of the season. Beginning with Sunday's Korean Grand Prix at the Yeongam track, the perfectionist in Vettel will take over as he looks for ways to improve on his third-place finish in Japan last weekend. As elated as the Red Bull driver was to secure the championship in Japan, finishing third behind Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso at Suzuka didn't sit well with him. It gives the 24-year-old German - F1's youngest two-time champion - plenty of moti-
vation for the Korean GP. "Obviously, we are over the moon to wrap up the championship but we didn't win (at Suzuka) so we've got another chance in the next races and we want to use those chances," Vettel said. "It's all about using the chances you have." The championship aside, Vettel was clearly a little frustrated at finishing third at Suzuka, where he won from pole the last two years. Just how determined he was to win was evident from the start of Sunday's race when he got a slightly slow start and cut hard to his right to block Button, who was forced to brake and put wheels on the grass to avoid contact. With 10 laps to go, he was close enough to Alonso to attempt
overtaking the Ferrari driver, but opted to play it safe knowing the championship would be secured with third place. "There is a lot of pressure to win," Vettel said. "We want to beat those guys. We didn't do it (at Suzuka) so we've got another chance in the next race." There are other things to keep Vettel interested, too, not least the constructors' championship. Red Bull is the defending champion and has a 130-point lead over McLaren heading into South Korea. Then there are the personal records. With nine races won so far in 2011, Vettel is still in contention to equal the season record of 13 wins held by countryman Michael Schumacher, although he would need

Red Bull set to clinch teams' title
YEONGAM, OctObEr 13 (AFP): Red Bull will add the Formula One constructors' championship to the drivers' title won by Sebastian Vettel last Sunday if they maintain their 130-point lead over McLaren in this weekend's Korean Grand Prix. With 25 points for a win and 18 for second place, newly-crowned champion Vettel and team-mate Mark Webber will make it a mathematical impossibility for McLaren to take the title if they can keep the points gap with three races remaining. Germany's Vettel, 24, cruised to glory in Japan, finishing a cautious third to become the sport's youngest back-to-back champion, with Australian Webber, 35, in fourth. But team owner Dietrich Mateschitz urged them to keep pushing hard. "We now build the basics to run for another championship in 2012," said the Red Bull boss. "And we are clearly aware of how Ferrari, McLaren, and Mercedes will increase their efforts to be on top next year. "We have to get out the best of our development in the final weeks of 2011 for the benefit of 2012." He said the constructors' championship was not yet in the bag although it was improbable the team would not score in the remaining races. "But we all know -- the devil never sleeps," he said. "The team will probably celebrate in Sao Paulo on the last Sunday night. Maybe we will have another party in Salzburg, as we did last year, but
to win all four remaining races. Only three drivers have won more pole positions in a single season than Vettel, who earned his 12th in Japan. Nigel Mansell holds the record with 14 from 1992. Ayrton Senna was on pole 13 times in both 1988 and 1989, while Alain Prost repeated the Brazilian's achievement in 1993. Vettel is now fourth on the all-time list of podium finishes in a single season. His 14th in Japan leaves him just three short of Schumacher's record of 17 set in 2002. Vettel and Red Bull aren't the only ones with goals to achieve in the last four races. Second place in the drivers' standings is still up for grabs, with Mclaren driver Button holding
an eight-point lead over Alonso. Alonso won last year's inaugural Korean Grand Prix, finishing ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa. Vettel led from pole position until 10 laps from the finish when his Renault engine gave way. Alonso said winning races is a bigger priority for the remainder of the season than finishing second in the championship. "I would prefer to win and finish fifth in the championship than finishing second in the championship and not winning one race," Alonso said. Still lingering is the feud between Massa and Hamilton. It flared up again in Japan when the drivers made contact at the chicane when Hamilton cut in front of Massa.
Nadal shocked at Terry backs Chelsea owner over relocation Shanghai Masters
shANGhAi, OctObEr 13 (AFP): Top seed Rafael Nadal was sent crashing out of the Shanghai Masters on a dramatic day of action on Thursday but defending champion Andy Murray survived a testing encounter to reach the quarterfinals. World number two Nadal lost 6-7 (5/7), 3-6 to Germany's Florian Mayer, edged out in a first set tiebreak and broken twice in the second set, stunning the crowd at the Qi Zhong stadium. Mayer made the crucial breakthrough in the seventh game of the second set to lead 4-3 and the Spaniard could not respond, broken again in the final game with the 15th seed taking his first match point. Earlier, second seed Murray, on a redhot run of form of 21 wins from 22 matches coming into the clash against the Swiss 13th seed Stanislas Wawrinka, won 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 under the roof. The British player looked set for a straightforward victory after taking the first set but cut a frustrated figure as he conceded a break of serve in the second set as Wawrinka lev-
elled the match with an ace. Murray raced into a 5-0 lead in the decider as Wawrinka was warned by the umpire after smashing his racket, but despite a late wobble he closed out the match. "I got myself pumped up right at the beginning of the third set. I think it was important," said Murray. "Stan was playing very well. I was trying to control the ball. "Especially in the middle of the second set, I was really struggling. I really had to make sure I got my feet moving." "It was a good win because Stan played very well in the second and third sets," he added. Earlier, Spain's Ferrer edged into the last eight when he beat injured Juan Carlos Ferrero. Third seed Ferrer won the all-Spanish tie 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 after a major fright in the 10th game of the second set, when he was forced to save three match points on his own serve. The win for Ferrer means he becomes the fifth player to qualify for the seasonending ATP World Tour Finals, featuring the world's top eight singles players over the year.
lONDON, OctObEr 13 (rEutErs): Roman Abramovich is mad about Chelsea and the fans must trust the Russian owner if he believes a move away from Stamford Bridge is in the club's best interests, captain John Terry said on Wednesday. The 2009-10 Premier League champions announced this month that they had made a proposal to buy back the freehold land at
Stamford Bridge from Chelsea Pitch Owners (CPO). Chelsea said this did not mean the club would definitely be relocating but added that buying back the freehold removed a potential hurdle should a suitable alternative site become available in the future. England skipper Terry, 30, is president of CPO but he said he was excited at the possibility of moving to a
new ground. "I can understand people being a bit wary of this proposal but they've seen what the owner has done in a short space of time and we have to keep faith with him," Terry told the club's website (www. chelseafc.com). "He will do the right thing now and he will still be doing the right thing in 10 years' time. He realises that without the fans Chelsea is
nothing is fixed yet." He added he was wary of complacency. "For some time the lead was big enough that Sebastian's second title is not that much of a surprise anymore," he said. "We believed in it for some time. However, with opposition from teams like McLaren and Ferrari, you can never be sure. It's only over when it's over mathematically." The Red Bull owner was also full of praise for Vettel's consistency. "His performance has been incredible," he said. "Everyone knows he is very good. He's got all the talent, the discipline, concentration, the capability to get totally focused on one single lap, and to raise his game when it is necessary. But if you look on the continuity of his performances, it's incredible. "For Mark (Webber), it was not easy to find the motivation and to get adjusted to the tyres. He had to cope with the kind of bad luck that struck Seb at the beginning of last season. However, Mark is a proven top driver on whom we can rely." Last weekend's victor Briton Jenson Button believes he and McLaren can not only win in Korea, but lay their own foundations for a title challenge next season. The circuit at Yeongam, hosting only the second Korean Grand Prix, was built on reclaimed land in the hills outside the city of Mokpo, about 44 kilometres from Seoul.
nothing. "I am one of them, my kids are too, and I want to be part of that for the next 40 to 50 years. What excites me is the thought of my kids ... being able to grow up watching the team play in a big stadium." Stamford Bridge has a capacity of 41,000 but Terry said Abramovich, who bought the club in 2003, was keen to have a bigger stadium to match Chelsea's growing aspirations.
The Brazilian was furious after finishing seventh. "I think the footage speaks for itself," Massa said on his official website. "He was struggling with his tires and I had almost come alongside him and for no reason, he moved over and hit me. It's pointless for me to say any more about it." The two had a collision at the Singapore Grand Prix two weeks earlier when Massa lashed out at Hamilton, saying the McLaren ace endangered other drivers with reckless driving. Race officials investigated the incident but no further action was taken. After Korea, F1 will stage its first race in India on Oct. 30, then move to Abu Dhabi on Nov. 13 before wrapping up the season in Brazil on Nov. 27.

Sahara buys stake as equal partner in Force India Rooney steeled for
NEw DElhi, OctObEr 13 (AGENciEs): With just 19 days to go for the inaugural Indian Grand Prix, Formula One team Force India will be renamed as Sahara Force India after the team's chairman Vijay Mallya sold part of the stake in his team to the chairman of Sahara Group Subrata Roy on Wednesday. A deal between the two business tycoons was inked in the evening, with the Sahara Group agreeing to pump in USD 100 million for the development of the Formula One team. As per the agreement signed, Sahara Group will be issued fresh shares of Watson Limited, which owns the team. Both Mallya's UB Sports and the Sahara Group will own 42.5 percent equity each in the team, while the remaining 15 percent will be with the Michiel Mol family. Michiel is a Dutch businessman and Director of the team. From now on, Subrata Roy will be the Chairman of the team, while Mallya will continue to be the Team Principal and Managing Director. "Sahara Group will invest approximately USD 100 million into the team. The total capital of the company has increased enormously. None of us sold or bought equity and there will be only re-structuring. New

shares will be sold," Mallya announced at a press conference on Wednesday evening. "Total shares will be distributed in three places. I will have 42.5 percent equity share and Sahara Group another 42.5 percent and Michiel Mol family 15 percent," he added. Subrata Roy said their aim is to take the team to newer heights. "Now we have joined hands with Vi-
jay Mallya. We have to discuss the plans so that the team reaches to the top as soon as possible," he said. Subrata hinted that he was interested in having an Indian driver in the team, but also clarified that he was not in a hurry. "In the future, an Indian driver should be in the team but the priority is the Indian team and not the drivers as of now. The result is also important," he said.
India have produced two F1 drivers thus far Narain Karthikeyan and Karun Chandhok - but none of the two has been given a chance to be with Force India. Narain is presently associated with Spanish outfit Hispania and Karun is a test driver for the Malaysia-based Team Lotus. Mallya said he has plans to bring in an Indian driver in the team but not
immediately. "I have never said that I am not interested in having Indian drivers. They do not suit me for whatever reason as of now. We are happy with the current team." "We have selected 10 Indian guys from our talent hunt programme and trained them in Silverstone. The winner will be announced before the Indian Grand Prix and he will be trained further," Mallya
added. Mallya said initially he wanted Sahara's association with Force India just as a sponsor, but the plan changed after Subrata Roy visited the team's factory in Silverstone, UK. "Just like any other team, I also wanted a sponsorship deal with Sahara Parivar but after seeing my factory he was impressed with the set-up there and agreed to invest this USD 100 million instead of sponsorship," Mallya revealed. "It is a huge money and will be invested in research and development, technology upgradation and new concepts and innovation which come from time to time like the KERS and wind diffuser. Team positions are decided by one hundredth of a second these days and this huge investment will help in improving the team position," he said. Liqour baron Mallya had bought the Spyker Ferrari F1 Team in 2007, reportedly for about for 90 million Euros. He then renamed the team as Force India in the 2008 season. Force India are currently at sixth position in the Constructor's Championships with 48 points, behind Renault. Mallya also owns IPL team Royal Challengers.
Anfield boo boys
lONDON, OctObEr 13 (rEutErs): Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney's Everton connections meant he was already in for a rough ride from Liverpool fans this weekend but last week's family problems and England sendingoff should crank up the decibels of abuse at Anfield. Liverpool host Rooney's table-topping United in one of the glamour fixtures of the Premier League in the early kick-off on Saturday and the usual fierce rivalry between the north-west neighbours will now have extra spice. Rooney will miss the start of Euro 2012 after being dismissed for a wild kick in England's 2-2 draw in Montenegro on Friday, just after his father and uncle had been arrested and bailed over an alleged betting scam which they deny. The Liverpool-born former Everton striker will run the gauntlet at a noisy Anfield but has proved time and again he can overcome adversity. A 2006 World Cup red card failed to knock his blis-
tering career off course and he has recovered from last season's dip in form and bizarre contract wrangle to rediscover his mojo with nine league goals from seven matches this term. United manager Alex Ferguson, perhaps pleased that England coach Fabio Capello has said Rooney will not start any friendlies in the build-up to Euro 2012, was not overly worried by his main forward's lack of selfcontrol. "He has been tackled and he has reacted," the champions' boss told a U.S. radio station. "He has this fiery temper which, to my mind, is not the worst thing in the world. He has shown tremendous improvement in his temperament and his reactions to tackles and things over the past few years. He is improving all the time." Two players who were not away with England because of a lack of fitness, United centre back Rio Ferdinand and Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard, will be desperate to return to the starting line-up in a game Liverpool won 3-1 last term.

Sharon Osbourne planning Javier Bardem Cast as the Next to spoil first grandchild
S
haron Osbourne is determined to "spoil" and "indulge" her first grandchild, but the kid won't be allowed to call her "grandma". The rock matriarch's son Jack and his fiancee Lisa Stelly announced this week (12Oct11) they are to become parents, and while Osbourne's husband Ozzy already has four grandchildren from his kids from his previous marriage, this baby will be Sharon's first. Sharon has now warned she will spoil the child rotten, because she doesn't have to worry about the responsibili-
ties of parenthood anymore. Speaking about the happy news on her chatshow The Talk, Osbourne says, "Our family is growing, and I love that. It's just a blessing, it's a joy. They're going to have
a baby in April. Yes! (I'll give them) everything! That's what comes with being a grandmother. You can spoil, you can indulge, and then say, 'Okay, now let your parents be the ones to teach you right from wrong. I'm not. What do you want? Have it!'" But the glamorous star is not ready to be called grandma yet, revealing she will urge the child to call her by her nicknames. She adds, "The baby's going to have to call me Shazza or Mrs O. In London, that's Sharon, the abbreviation is Shazza. They call you, 'Shazza.' 'Hello Shazza!'"
Brad Womack Won't Stop Calling Ex Emily Maynard
E
ither Brad Womack needs to cut the cord -- or Emily Maynard needs to change her phone number! Although the Bachelor star, 38, and single mom Maynard, 25, officially called off their engagement in June, sources say that Womack is having a very hard time letting go. "He calls Emily every day and at all hours!" a source says of Womack, who pesters Maynard in Charlotte, North Carolina from his own hometown of Austin, Texas. "She just doesn't pick up. They actually haven't spoken for months." Indeed, Maynard (mom to daughter Ricki, 6) has certainly moved on -- even going on a few low-key dates with NFL pro Jeremy Shockey of the Carolina Panthers. But when false web rumors in August claimed Maynard was dating wealthy scion David Smith (actually just an old pal), Womack flipped. The bar owner "filled up her voicemail with messages of him crying, saying how upset he was that she was with someone else," the source reveals.

Bond Villain!
B
ardem is a baddie once again! Javier Bardem has officially signed on to play the villain in the as-yetuntitled 23rd James Bond film, he recently confirmed to Christiane Amanpour on Nightline. "I am very excited," the Spanish-born actor, 42, said. "My parents took me to watch the movies and I saw all of them. So to play that is going to be fun." Bardem won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 2007 for playing a very scary villain indeed, a fictional serial killer named Anton Chigurh, in No Country for Old Men. No details yet on Bardem's character in the upcoming Bond film (rumored to be titled Skyfall), the follow-up to 2008's 007 flick Quantum of Solace. "They chose me to play this man, but I cannot give you many details," teased Bardem, who has a 10-month-old son, Leo, with wife Penelope Cruz. Also up in the air: Whether Daniel Craig -Bond in the past two films of the franchise -- will reprise his role as the British agent. Actor Idris Elba is among the names supposedly in the running to fill Craig's shoes. "It's a rumor," Elba, 39, said recently."I just don't want to be the black James Bond. Sean Connery wasn't the Scottish James Bond, and Daniel Craig wasn't the blue-eyed James Bond, so if I played him, I don't want to be called the black James Bond."
MJ had horrific health problems

ichael Jackson 'took hours to urinate' and had such bad toenail fungus that doctors thought his flesh was rotting, a court heard today. Jackson's health problems were listed in minute detail as jurors were told that his heartbroken daughter lashed out at Dr Conrad Murray for failing to save her father's life. In an interview with detectives two days after the pop star's death on June 25, 2009, Murray said that Jackson's three children had 'cried and cried and cried'. His daughter, Paris, now 13, apparently told her father's personal doctor: 'I will wake up in the morning and I won't be able to see my daddy.' According to the 58-year-old cardiologist, she said: 'Dr Murray, you said you save a lot of patients. You know, you save people with heart attacks, and you couldn't save my dad.' Murray said Jackson had been covered in injec-
tion scars and had been stick-thin because he did not eat or drink, the jury heard as they again saw a photo of the singer's dead body. His body had been so wasted that the ambulance crew had thought he was a hospice patient. Murray, who has denied involuntary manslaughter, also revealed that Jackson used 'excessive cologne' and Benoquin, a cream that bleaches the skin. He made
the revelations as detectives said they had found two empty cigarette packets in his room - raising the possibility that he had been a secret smoker. They also found empty bottles of sedative and antianxiety pills, some bearing the names Omar Arnold and Paul Farance - aliases Jackson used for his medication. Murray said he suspected Jackson suffered from phlebitis, a condition asso-
ciated with the formation of bloodclots, usually in the deep veins of the legs. He claimed the star's eyesight was so bad that he could have been 'legally blind' and said he removed calluses and a fungal infection on the entertainer's feet that made it painful for him to dance. Jackson had also been prescribed Flomax, which shrinks the prostate, to help him urinate more easily. Prosecutors say Murray caused Jackson's death by giving him a lethal dose of the powerful anaesthetic Propofol, which should only be used in a hospital setting. In the interview, Murray admitted for the first time that he gave the star Propofol, telling police he had been administering the drug almost daily for the previous two months. He said the singer had 'loved' the drug, but that he had been trying to wean him off it. Murray's lawyers claim that Jackson administered the fatal dose himself.

india: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt), Gautam Gambhir, Parthiv Patel, Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Varun Aaron, Umesh Yadav, Vinay Kumar, S Aravind, Rahul Sharma, Manoj Tiwary, Praveen Kumar. HYDERABAD, OctOBER 13 (AFP): Injury-ravaged India hope to make a fresh start in the new season by defeating England in the one-day series at home, captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said on Thursday. India's World Cup triumph in April was overshadowed by a disastrous tour of England a few months later when they were blanked 4-0 in the Test series to lose the number one ranking and also lost the one-dayers 3-0. Dhoni's men get a chance to redeem themselves when they take on Alastair Cook's Englishmen in a five-match one-day series that opens in Hyderabad on Friday. "Our objective is to make a victorious start to the new season," Dhoni wrote in an exclusive piece for the Indian cricket board's official website (www. bcci.tv). "We may have not been up to the mark in England, but the fact is that before that tour, we won the game's biggest prize, the World Cup. Our performances over the past three seasons speak for themselves. "I am convinced that it is only a matter of time before we turn the tide." Injuries to key players have taken such a heavy toll on the Indians that the 15-man squad for the England one-dayers has just four survivors from the side that beat Sri Lanka in the World Cup final in Mumbai on April 2. Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan and Munaf Patel have been sidelined with injuries, while Harbhajan and Shanthakuma-

New ICC ODI rules are a bit tricky, says MS Dhoni HYDERABAD, OctOBER 13 (PtI): Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni termed the new rules for ODIs set by the ICC as "tricky" and said that getting reverse swing could be a problem as two new balls will be in use from both ends. According to the new ICC rules, there would be two new balls used from the two ends while batting and bowling powerplays needs to be taken within the 16th and the 40th over. "It's a bit tricky as we have not yet played any match under this new powerplay. It would certainly need a different approach as the second and third powerplay will now be taken within the 16th and the 40th over. "Earlier while chasing, teams would be happy to keep the batting powerplay for the last five overs. But now we have to make few changes in tactics. It will be giving different results till we get used to it," the Indian captain said on the eve of their opening encounter of the five-match ODI series against England. The skipper also seemed worried about the fact that there may not be a lot of reverse swing as both the balls will be only 25 overs old at the most. "A bit of swing will definitely be there but there may not be much reverse swing as we expect in the sub-continent. Now the reverse swing also depends a lot on the nature of outfield and how you make the ball but of course legally," the skipper said.

ran Sreesanth were dropped due to poor form. Dhoni hoped his three other World Cup teammates -- Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina and Virat Kohli -- will lead the batting charge against the buoyant Englishmen. "As the senior components of the batting lineup, the onus is on us to defy the opposition bowlers and take the team to secure territory," the skipper wrote. Seamer Praveen Kumar remains the only experienced bowler in the depleted squad expected to contain the England line-up on traditionally batting-friendly wickets. Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Sharma will be the three spin options, while Praveen leads a new-ball attack that also includes unheralded Umesh Yadav and Vinay Kumar. Dhoni, however, remained confident the new-look attack will deliver. "I believe the new boys will be good enough to bowl on wickets that are likely to suit the batsmen," he said. "They have grown up bowling in these conditions and know the wickets well." The remaining four matches after the Hyderabad opener will be played in New Delhi on October 17, Mohali on the 20th, Mumbai on the 23rd and Kolkata on the 25th. England will round off the tour with a Twenty20 game in Kolkata on October 29.
