miSrata, OctOber 22, (reuterS): Nato called an end to its air war in Libya, and the clan of Muammar Gaddafi demanded a chance to bury the body that lay on display in a meat locker after a death as brutal and chaotic as his 42-year rule. In a statement on a Syriabased pro-Gaddafi television “What say we stop dancing station, the ousted dictator’s to our governments` tune, family asked for the bodies of sell our tractors and produce Gaddafi, his son Mo’tassim, a collaborated music video? and others who were killed on Thursday by fighters who overThe Morung Express ran his hometown Sirte. “We call on the UN, the OrPOLL QUESTIOn ganisation of the Islamic ConVote on www.morungexpress.com ference and Amnesty InternaSMS your answer to 9862574165 tional to force the [National] Transitional Council to hand Is Naga society prepared over the martyrs’ bodies to our for foreign investors to tribe in Sirte and to allow them come into Nagaland? to perform their burial ceremony in accordance with Islamic Yes no Others customs and rules,” the statement said. Moammar Gadhafi’s blood-streaked body was on display in a commercial freezer at a shopping center Friday as Libyan authorities argued about what to do with his remains and questions deepened over official accounts of the longtime dictator’s death. conducted it with the greatest of care,” Rasmussen said. “I’m very proud of what we have achieved.” The Nato operation, officially intended to protect civilians, effectively ended on Thursday with French warplanes blasting Gaddafi’s convoy as he and others tried to escape a final stand in Sirte. Gaddafi was captured wounded but alive hiding in a drain under a road. The world has since seen grainy film of

him being roughed up by his captors while he pleads with them to respect his rights. NTC officials have said Gaddafi later died of wounds in the ambulance, but the ambulance driver, Ali Jaghdoun, told Reuters that Gaddafi was already dead when he picked up the body. “I didn’t try to revive him because he was already dead,” Jaghdoun said, in testimony that adds greater weight to the widespread assumption that Gaddafi

was lynched. The UN human rights arm said an investigation was needed to into whether he was summarily executed. The interim leaders have yet to decide what to do with the corpse. BURIAL DISPUTE In Misrata, a local commander, Addul-Salam Eleiwa, showed off the body, torso bare, on a mattress inside a metallined cold-store by a market on Friday. There was a bullet

hole in his head. “He will get his rights, like any Muslim. His body will be washed and treated with dignity. I expect he will be buried in a Muslim cemetery within 24 hours,” he said. Dozens of people, many with cellphone cameras, filed in to see that he was dead. “There’s something in our hearts we want to get out,” said Abdullah al-Suweisi, 30, as he waited. “It is the injustice of 40 years. There is hatred inside. We want to see him.” In Tripoli, Gaddafi’s death prompted a carnival-like celebration, with fireworks, a bouncy castle and candy floss for the children. “Muammar, bad,” one small girl said to foreign journalists in English. “Boom boom.” “For some people from outside Libya it could look wrong that we are celebrating a death with our children,” said one man with a child on his shoulders. “But it was 42 years with the devil.” RISKS OF DIVISION Saif al-Islam, Gaddafi’s son and heir-apparent remains at large, believed by NTC officials to have escaped from besieged Sirte and headed for a southern border. Without the glue of hatred for Gaddafi and his tribe to unite the factions, some fear a descent into the kind of strife that bedevils Iraq after Saddam Hussein. Optimists say that so far Libya’s new rulers have quarreled but not fought. Continued on page 5

‘Resolving Naga issue crucial to development’

New Delhi, OctOber 22 (pti): With decades of insurgency affecting Nagaland’s economic progress, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Saturday said early resolution of the vexed Naga issue was crucial to the implementation of various developmental plans in the state. “Early and lasting solution to the vexed Naga political problem will be critical to ensure success in implementation of various development plans,” he said addressing the National Development Council meeting here. The Centre has been holding talks with NSCN-IM since 1998 to find a solution to the Naga problem. In July, the Centre and the NSCN-IM had announced that they “narrowed” down differences and were working out a settlement in the “shortest possible time”. Rio said state government’s strategy of ‘peace for development and development for peace’ has paid dividends to some extent and there was a need for sustained efforts to fuel economic growth in the state. Noting that improving connectivity in the northeastern region was crucial for economic development, Rio said his government has set a target of 10 per cent growth rate for Nagaland during the 12th Five Year Plan. “The North Eastern states except Assam is primarily dependent on road transport. The region shares thousand kilometres of international border with five countries. Development of road network deserves highest priority,” he said. He also complimented a proposal mentioned in the Approach Paper for 12 th Plan to open road connectivity from North East to Myanmar. “Construction of a highway along the Indo-Myanmar border in addition to opening the area for trade will also check illegal trafficking of drugs and arms,” he said.

Nagas urged to stand up against ‘problems’ Anna Hazare encourages EAC probationers

As seen in the image released to the media, during their Bharat Darshan, EAC (Probationers) of 2009 Batch also went to Pune and met social activist Anna Hazare at his village Ralegan Siddhi near Pune on 20th October, 2011. Though hundreds of people were waiting to meet Anna, he gave a private audience to the probationers and spent half an hour with them. That day, he was continuing with his “silent fast” but he interacted with the probationers through written messages.

Dimapur, OctOber 22 (mexN): Social activist Anna Hazare has supposedly issued a message to the youths of Nagaland urging them not to be afraid of their “social problems” but face them as ‘challenges.’ “Your state is facing more

social problems than ours; these social problems are our challenges. We should not be afraid of such things and we should focus on our aim,” Hazare’s ‘message’ stated, as informed by a group of Extra Additional Commissioners on-probation from Nagaland

whopaidtheactivistavisiton. Referring to Nagaland, Hazare explained that “your state is facing more social problems than ours; these social problems are our challenges. We should not be afraid of such things and we should focus on our aim.”

EAC (probationers) of the 2009 batch went to Pune and met Hazare at his village Ralegan Siddhi near Pune on October 20, Associate Professor of ATI, N. Moa Longkumer informed in a note today. The social activist gave a private audience to the probationers and spent half an hour with them, the note said. “He also gave a written message for the people, especially youth, of Nagaland. The original message is written in Marathi but we are attaching the translation, Longkumer said. According to the message, Hazare expressed great expectations from “our youth (you people)” and encouraged the EACs that “you can do a lot for your country and for the people around you, and I certainly believe that you can do it.” Calling the young generation the backbone of the country, the activist asked the youth to “create a great future for our country.” Advising against ‘running behind money,’ the activist said “money is just a small part of our life, and it’s just the medium to live life; people who sacrifice their life for country and society are the real heroes of life.”

Truckers refuse to ply on sinking Mkg road

Nagaland’s second busiest highway, the Mokokchung-Mariani border road, since October 17 has not seen any truck plying on it as the Assam based Hills Area Truck Owners’ Association (HATOA) have imposed a “chaka bandh.” The truckers claim that they will not drive up the hills of Nagaland so long as the road condition is not improved. This particular road, maintained by the Border Roads Organization (BRO), is the life-line of Nagaland’s Mokokchung, Tuensang and Zunheboto districts as well as parts of Longleng and Wokha districts. The Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung, Lithrongla G Chishi when

contacted said that she is in constant contact with the BRO and added that she has requested the BRO to expedite their work. She had on Friday morning gone down towards Changki herself to take stock of the situation. She was of the opinion that the BRO should not only repair the portions of road damaged by landslides but that the whole stretch of the road must be repaired. “Unprecedented rainfall this year has caused lot of damage to the roads but the BRO should have done timely supervision and improvisation,” she regretted. She also observed that the road was in such bad shape that it is “hazardous for loaded trucks, passenger vehicles and transports ferrying sick patients” to travel on this road. She also expressed regret that

the people were in the dark about whether funds have been allocated for the road or not. It remains to be seen if and when the HATAO will pull out of their stance but it is clearly evident that essential commodities in the aforementioned districts will run out of stock anytime now. No spokesperson of the HATAO was immediately available for comments but it is learnt from sources that, owing to the bad road conditions, plying commercial trucks on this road at the moment is not viable from the business point of view. “The members of HATAO are mostly the traders themselves. The traders incur heavy losses because they spent considerable amount of money in vehicle maintenance. Continued on page 5

Workshop conducted on caring for differently – abled person DIMAPuR, OCTOBER 22 (MExN): As a follow-up of their ongoing work to sensitize schools and teachers about the various issues related to disability Enable conducted a pioneering one day training workshop in Pfutsero on October 19. The programme entitled “ Workshop on equipping Parent, Teachers and Care-givers in caring for differently – abled person” is also a follow-up of Enable’s prior research work done in the district, the abstract of which has also been brought out by the group. A press note received here stated that speaking at the inaugural function of the workshop the chief guest , v.Lovitoly Sema , the Sub Divisional Officer (Civil), Pfutsero Headquarters congratulated Enable for its novel initiative in reaching out to the parents of differently- abled persons and schools in the Phek district. She said that the state had for so long neglected this issue and it was high time that disability issues are seriously tackled. Mentioning that the state still does not have the exact figures pertaining to the state, she said that effort must be made to help differently- abled persons feel an equal part of the society. Lovitoly also said that in developed nations, provisions like ramps and other adjustments even in public places are made keeping in mind the needs of the persons with disability, however these things are yet to come about in the state. Earlier in the programme the chairperson of Enable, Neikule Doulo a mother of a child with autism spoke about the history of Enable, a group that started in 2007 out of the dire needs felt by few parents to provide the basic facilities to their children along with their friends. Their belief Neikule said is summed up in a quote by Mahatma Gandhi, “Be the change that you want to see in the world”. She said that these

parents who initially formed the core group along with their friends felt that even parents having privileged lives also went through much ordeal and hence felt compelled to help those less privileged ones to get access to the basic facilities within the state. The chairperson said that through their initiative there are a number of inclusive schools and play schools in the state where a number of special children are given equal opportunity as any of their peergroups. The chairperson also said that their research work – “Status of Disability in Kohima and Phek” district has highlighted the plight of many neglected differently- abled persons. However she is of the firm belief that the issue of disability has to be tackled by parents, schools, churches, civil society groups and the government collectively and it is not something that can be taken care of by just one party, the press note said. Speaking on the occasion was Dr Asunu Thong, secretary of the group highlighted the various health concerns that may cause disability in children of which a number are unknown. But some causes like alcohol, smoking, exposure to radiation, taking drugs, sexually transmitted diseases like syphilis, trauma at birth are preventable causes of disability. Also a mother of a 7 year old boy with autism and the proprietor of the inclusive playschool Jo Foundation, Kohima, Dr Asunu shared that her son is still non-verbal despite the fact that he was diagnosed before 3 years and said that early diagnosis is crucial for intervention in the cases of all types of disability. Talking of the interventions that can help children with special needs she said that it was imperative that parents from whatever background should talk to their children constantly to keep stimulating their minds and give

them as much opportunity to interact with their peer groups to help them learn by observing their friends. The programme also included a highlight of the possibilities of the true spirit of inclusion in a mainstream school by Nzanbeni Tsopoe, Headmistress of St Joseph School, Kohima and the President of the All Nagaland Private Schools Association, Kohima unit. Nzanbeni said that St Joseph School has so far helped two students with disability in the successful clearing of the HSLC exams this year and helped them to secure admission in reputed colleges in Kohima ensuring their success. She also said that there are other children affected by various disabilities in the school and the teachers are all making extra efforts to help them do better. Nzanbeni challenged the teachers present at the programme to take teaching as a mission work and give their very best. It further stated that Kopele Mero, Special Educator also shared on the ways to teach Children With Special Needs emphasizing on the fact that children learn from a very early age and that parents need to take proactive measures as soon as they can. Addressing teachers, she stated that inclusive classrooms need to be well-planned ahead of time and teaching should be made fun for all kinds of learners. She stressed that many a time weak children are pressurized to do more than the others which can prove to be detrimental for those with learning disabilities. A former consultant at Shree Ram school, New Delhi, she said that in other places inclusion meant that the classwork of every child, be it a child with normal abilities or one with special needs was tailored for their own individual needs and teachers should try to follow that system.

NRB reaches out to Niuland

ADC, Niuland, Hotolu Swu alongwith SBI and NRB officials, and elders of Niuland town during the inaugural on Saturday, October 22.

DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 22 (MExN): Nagaland Rural Bank (NRB) has further spread its reach by opening a branch at Niuland. Before the opening of the branch, Niuland sub-division under Dimapur district was a previously ‘unbanked’ block. The branch, located right in the middle of Niuland town, was formally inaugurated on Saturday, October 22 by the Additional Deputy Commissioner of the sub-division, Hotolu Swu. It is the ninth branch of the NRB in Nagaland. While expressing his gratitude to the bank for opening the branch, Swu, in his address said that the NRB will always be remembered as the pioneers of banking services in Niuland sub-division. NRB is the first banking institution to open a branch in Niuland. The branch is currently providing its services from a oneroomed transaction section. Nevertheless, Swu commented: “Let us

not look at the size of the branch right now, but (rather) concentrate on its potentiality and what it can contribute.” AK Das, Assistant General Manager, SBI Regional Business Office, Dimapur, who also attended the inaugural, expressed his surprise in observing that Niuland was without a banking service, until now, inspite of it being surrounded by vast agricultural land with great economic potential. He added that the SBI will be putting its eyes on covering previously ‘unbanked’ blocks during the ongoing financial year. To open a bank branch, he said, is not an easy task and further it is a challenge to keep the branch up and running. However, he expressed optimism that the NRB will live up to the expectation of the people and succeed. Speaking on behalf of the people of Niuland, Hoikhu Awomi, vice chairman of Niuland Ad-hoc Town Com-

mittee said the opening of the branch will not only benefit the economy of Niuland but also the bank itself. Stating the public of Niuland is behind the bank, and at the same time, Awomi urged the bank officials to work without any apprehension and to have patience. Aside from various deposit schemes, the NRB extends farmer-friendly loans like Kisan Credit Cards, Agri. Term Loan, SHG-Credit Linkage and others like SMETerm Loan, SME-CC for Traders, General Credit Cards, Personal Loan (NRB Express) and Personal Car Loan. Its other activities include - formation and monitoring of Self Help Groups, formation and monitoring of Kisan Club (Farmers Club), banking awareness campaign through SHG-FC and issuing of Grameen Pay Order (GPO) in lieu of Demand Draft payable at SBI branches all over India.

Taking the road less traveled been taught how to think,” he said. Doulo, CEO of Entrepreneurs Associates was speaking at a workshop for Christian youths at the NBCC’s 27th annual youth session cum triennial conference at WSBAK Mission Centre in Dimapur. Doulo said that Nagas need to be exposed to the modern economic system where they can enjoy financial freedom. Majority of the Naga youths prefer government jobs because there is a sense of secutiry that comes with it, he said. The older generation especially, he added, has not been able to change their mindset. However, what people don’t understand is that they have the security but not the freedom, he said; adding that as long as one lakh or so Naga youths are focused only on government jobs, the only piece of cake is their 5 crore that is spent on salary. But he said there are

limitless opportunities of entrepreneurship. Doulo said Naga youths have to find out where they have gone wrong and take on impending challenges. He said Naga people have the wrong impression that doing business means merely running a shop. But the youths, he said, need to realize and change their mindset about running a business. He said: “Nagas need to change their attitude otherwise there is no future in entrepreneurship for them;” adding it is wrong attitude that blocks all roads to development and becoming successful. In order to be a successful businessman, one must be focused, hardworking, smart, honest and realistic, he also added. He also commented on the “relaxed” attitude youths of the present generation. He said Nagas have the ‘brahamanical’ attitude towards work where it is

assumed that the educated do not have to work and pointed out that there is no place for those who live with such kind of attitude. He said that it takes much more than formal education to become successful and rich. “Nagas have the wrong attitude. We think that the more educated the less we have to work,” he remarked. Doulo also emphasized on the role of the church in building the future of Naga youths. He provided an entirely new perspective about money. He said that “money is not the root of all evil;” infact, it is “the love of money” that is evil. He said there is nothing wrong in being wealthy because God wants us to be rich and successful in life. “If you think being rich is not virtuous, you are mistaken,” he said. He reminded the youths that ours is a God of abundance and he will bless if we ask.

‘Shed pessimism, Indian economy intrinsically strong’

The Morung Express

MRF launches tubeless radial tyres

The prime minister, an economist of repute himself, and a former central bank governor and finance minister, had absolutely no doubt that India’s longer term prospects were sound. “Twenty years ago, in my first budget speech as finance minister, borrowing a phrase from Victor Hugo, I had said: ‘No power on earth can stop an idea whose time has come’. I went on to say ‘the emergence of India as a major economic power in the world happens to be one such idea’.” Accordingly, he said, this line of thinking has spread across the political spectrum. “I am happy to say that in the past two decades, different political parties, ruling in different times, in different states, and also in the centre, have pushed in the same general direction to ensure that my prediction is now a widely accepted reality.”

New Delhi, OctOber 22 (AgeNcieS): MRF said it was looking at acquiring tyre plants overseas besides engaging in rubber plantations in countries such as Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam to meet the growing demand for raw material and its rising costs. The tyre-maker is also setting up a new plant in Tamil Nadu with an investment of Rs.800 crore that would become operational by early next year. “We may acquire plants outside India. We have not come across anything as yet…we will preferably look at acquisitions abroad rather than taking the usual organic growth path,” MRF Executive Vice-President (Marketing) Koshy K. Varghese told journalists here after launching a new series of high performance, tubeless radial tyres, MRF Z.L.O. MRF is also looking at acquiring or managing rubber estates abroad, particularly in countries such as Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, to cope with the surging input cost. “We may look at rubber estates overseas to bring down cost. Today, most of the rubber that we

New Delhi, OctOber 22 (AgeNcieS): Whopping hike in air fares have brought gloom to air travellers this Diwali season with ticket prices rising two-three folds than normally available fares, especially on the eastern sector. Late planners have to pay through the nose to fly to their holiday destinations as the ‘dynamic fares’ charged by domestic airlines shot through the roof. One-way flight from Delhi to Patna or Guwahati would cost Rs 26,383 and Rs 28,014 respectively, while ticket prices between Delhi and Kolkata, which cost

New Delhi, OctOber 22 (iANS): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday said there was no need for pessimism over the fundamentallystrong Indian economy, with the current slowdown just a short-term phenomenon due largely to the ongoing turmoil in the Western world. “The current slowdown is a matter of concern. But it should be seen as a short term phenomenon, reflecting highly unsettled conditions in the global economy. Growth rates are being revised downwards in all countries,” the prime minister said. “We must guard against the mood of negativism that seems to have gripped the country. Recently a distinguished business leader said in India the business is better than the mood,” the prime minister told the 56th meeting of the National Development

Council. In this light, he said, nine percent growth for the next five years was certainly feasibly, though difficult, if some concerted action was made at all levels. “I have absolutely no doubt that our country’s longer term prospects are very good.” The economy has been facing a number of challenges this fiscal, notably the slowing of the growth in industrial output and high inflation. Factory production has been sluggish in the past quarter with data for August showing output at 4.1 percent, while in July it had slumped to 3.8 percent -- the lowest in almost two years. On the other hand, inflation, based on wholesale prices, has been hovering close to double-digits for 10 months now. For September, annual inflation was registered at 9.72 percent. Latest data showed food inflation crossing double digits. The prime minis-

ter, however, told the council, which is the highest decisionmaking body on matters pertaining to central and state finances, which also approve the Five Year Plans, that the situation was not as bad as it seemed. “Investment is, after all, a reflection of the animal spirits of enterprise,” the prime minister said, drawing from John Maynard Keynes’ book, “The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money” that describes it as an emotion that influences human behaviour into spontaneous action. The council, chaired by the prime minister, was attended by Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, some key central ministers and chief ministers. They discussed the approach to the Twelfth Five Year Plan (2012-13 to 2016-17)

procure is either bought domestically or we import rubber…but if we could manage rubber estates abroad, we can take advantage,” Varghese pointed out. On the MRF’s Rs.800-crore new manufacturing plant at Tiruchi in Tamil Nadu, Varghese said it was expected to start operations in JanuaryFebruary, 2012. On the new series

of high performance, tubeless radial tyres, MRF Z.L.O., Varghese said it could be fitted on more than 35 models of domestic and imported cars running on Indian roads. The new tyres were made of advanced polymer compound with stable ring construction to enhance customers’ confidence in high speed driving, he added.

“Dearest Athrongla!!! On this very special day, I truly wanted to let you know that your love has made each day of my life more beautiful and all my efforts done worthwhile. around Rs 4,500-Rs 6,000, now range between Rs 15,000 and Rs 17,420, travel portals and airline sites showed. A Delhi-Mumbai ticket, the price of which generally hovers around Rs 3,500, may cost as high as Rs 17,089 with the lowest cost air ticket being available at Rs 6,189. A flight between Jaipur and Mumbai for the weekend costs Rs 8,000, while that Mumbai and Lucknow is priced between Rs 9,000-16,000. While officials maintain that the high rates were being constantly monitored by a committee in the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, there

seems to have been no impact on the fare levels. The sites show that air travellers have been left with no option but to reach their destinations on hopping flights and that too, at a very high price, as most of the direct flights have been fully booked earlier itself. A similar situation had prevailed during the Durga Puja festivities and, travel industry sources say, such high demand could be expected during the winter vacation too. They maintained that due to high passenger traffic, the low-fare buckets had filled up fast leaving only the high-fare options.

Renault Modus: The next small car for Indian roads Cellphones don’t increase cancer risk: Study

MuMbAi, OctOber 22 (AgeNcieS): To make a place for any car maker in India, it is very important for it to launch a small car here. And that is exactly what Renault is planning with the Modus. Earlier this year, Renault revealed its plans of adding five cars to their portfolio in the next year and a half. The Fluence and the Koleos have already made its way into the Indian market but what the French automobile manufacturer really needs is a small car for the Indian market. A lot of spy shot of the Renault Modus have been flying around in the media off late with the car being spotted in Chennai near the Ranault-Nissan plant. Globally, the car has two body

type variants - Modus and the Grand Modus, but the Grand Modus however will not make its way to India. Under the hood, the Modus may carry the same engine as the petrol and the diesel Nissan Micra. A 1.2-litre petrol power plant and a 1.5-litre dCi engine that also powers the Fluence are the most likely candidates to find its way to into the Modus. Internationally, the Modus was the first small car to get a 5 Star Euro NCAP (an assessment programme that judges car safety) rating. This will be the third car to be added to their portfolio within this year. The Modus may be launched at the Indian Grand Prix in the last week of October, in Delhi.

lONDON, OctOber 22 (AgeNcieS): Mobile phones do not increase the risk of cancer, according to a large study involving more than 350,000 people by Danish researchers published. The results, released on the British Medical Journal’s website, chime with a series of other studies that have reached similar conclusions. Scientists from the Institute of Cancer Epidemiology in Copenhagen looked at people aged at least 30 who subscribed to mobile phone contracts and compared their rates of brain tumors with nonsubscribers between 1990 and 2007. Outside experts said the large scale of the trial was impressive. “This paper supports most other reports which do

not find any detrimental effects of phone use under normal exposures,” said Malcolm Sperrin, director of Medical Physics at Britain’s Royal Berkshire Hospital and Fellow of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine. At the end of May, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer decided cellphone use should be classified as “possibly carcinogenic to humans,” putting then in the same category as lead, chloroform and coffee. But just over a month later the International Commission on NonIonizing Radiation Protection’s committee on epidemiology said the scientific evidence increasingly pointed away from a link between mobile

phone use and brain tumors. The number of mobile phones has risen hugely since the early 1980s, with nearly 5 billion handsets in use today, prompting lengthy debate about their potential link to the main types of brain tumor, glioma and meningioma.

new Delhi, OctOber 22 (Pti): Noting that economic prosperity was crucial to root out insurgency, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday sought "massive infusion of financial resources" by the Centre into the state during the 12th Five Year Plan. Demanding an "attitudinal change" in ensuring development of the state, Gogoi told National Development Council that a "holistic approach" coupled with an effective implementation and monitoring mechanism was key to help the economy of the state grow on par with rest of the country. Identifying lack of adequate connectivity in the entire North Eastern region as a major hurdle, he sought special emphasise on strengthening of road, rail and aerial network in Assam during the 12th Plan period. "Twelth Plan has to lay due emphasis in improving the infrastructure in terms of road, railway and air connectivity both within the NE region and with other parts of the country," he said, also demanding better resource allocation for maintenance of 2,848 kms of National Highways in Assam. Gogoi said Guwahati airport should be developed as hub for aerial connectivity in the region. Noting that although law and order situation has improved in the state remarkably, he said still the "perception" about the scenario has been influencing economic decisions such as flow of investment into the state. He said ensuring connectivity to all parts of the state and building infrastructure were crucial for eliminating insurgency in the state. Seeking a special agricultural policy for the North East as part of the 12th Plan, he said extending institutionalised support to the farmers was necessary to transform the rural economy of the state.

"Five bags of the skin were recovered Friday night from a Guwahati-Aizawl passenger bus," customs superintendent Sudip Kumar Datta told reporters here. The customs officials found the contraband from the bus bound for Mizoram capital Aizawl at Sonabari Ghat in southern Assam, 400 km south of Assam's main city of Guwahati.

Gaddafi family demands body, Nato ends “air war” in Libya From page 1 “Can an inclusive, effective national government be formed? Yes, if factions can avoid fighting,” Jon Marks, chairman of Britain’s Cross Border Information consultancy said. In Washington, state department spokesman Mark Toner said the NTC had promised to explain how Gaddafi was killed. “They’re dealing with the death itself as well as the aftermath in as transparent a way as I think they can,” he said. “They’ve fought bravely to liberate their country from this dictator. And, you know, he met an ignominious end yesterday.” One sign of a move towards normalcy was the United Nations Security Council beginning talks on lifting the nofly-zone imposed by resolution 1973 of March 17. Envoys expected the flying ban, designed to protect civilians, would be ended after consultations with libya’s new rulers.

NORMAl lIFE IN four hill districts of Manipur on Saturday affected due to a three-day total bandh enforced by All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM) to air their voice against the failure of Government of India to take up concrete action regarding ‘Alternative Arrangement’ for the Nagas outside the Government of Manipur. The bandh which began from last midnight and to be ended on midnight of October 24 paralyzed normal business and vehicular movement. All offices of both Government and

non-Government were also remained closed in the districts of Tamenglong, Senapati, Ukhrul and Chandel. Schools were thinly attended as vehicular movement of any kind including that of frontal organizations have been restricted during the strike. In the meantime, ANSAM has also imposed an indefinite public curfew on the same demand which will commence with effect from October 25. Meanwhile, the Zeliangrong Baudi (Assam, Manipur, Nagaland) has warned for more intense agitation if the Government of India fails to meet the demand for 'alternative arrangement' for the Nagas outside of Manipur

Placards set up on walls expressing “Tripartite talks must be honoured”, “We condemn Ibobi’s communal Government”, “We want peace solution”, “We want alternative arrangement for tribal people”, “We want alternative ar-

rangement outside Manipur” were seen across the four hill districts. It is worth noting that last year following the request from Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, the United Naga Council (UNC) had agreed to engage in a tripartite talk among the Centre, the state Government and UNC. The talks had held three rounds so far, however, the dialogue process has not been able to bring an amicable solution to end the impasse following which UNC on September 29 last served an ultimatum to the Centre to initiate the process for intervention with an alternative arrangement outside the Government of Manipur within 20 days.

Truckers refuse to ply KSO cautions ‘communal’ on Sadar demand issue on sinking Mkg road imPhal, OctOber 22 (nnn): Kuki students have cautioned that any political agenda of the government along communal lines would spell doom for the Meitei, Naga and the Kuki. The Kuki Students’ Organization (KSO) said today that the caution is made based on apprehensions of move for ‘alternative arrangement' for the Nagas in Manipur state. In the context of the current situation, the SKO stated in a press release today, the political history of Manipur, terminology and coverage, is ‘unquestionably communal in nature.’ The KSO said it had already explained that the demand of the Sadar Hills District Demand Committee’s (SHDDC) for a separate district is ‘not communal in nature.’ However, it said, “some Naga bodies” and the state government are ‘intent on making it a communal issue leading to outrages communal statements being leveled against the Kuki com-

He said that the BRO has since 2009 neglectedtheroadandexpressed strong revulsion against the Commanding Officer of the BRO for “not even having the courtesy to approach the HATAO on the matter.” He disclosed that the HATAO members have been trying to meet the Commanding Officer but “he ignored them.” Moasangba also claimed that the BRO must not only repair the sinking areas and clear the land-slides but that the whole stretch of the road must be repaired. “It is a road under the defense ministry. It should be at its best,” he added. The condition of Mokokchung-Mariani road, which is about 85 kilometers, is worst in the Changki village area. A stretch of about 5 kilometers, starting from Changki Junction to Mekokla link Road is the worst hit.

The road along this stretch is almost not pliable for vehicles. This stretch also happens to be an accident-prone area. There are 5 major landslide areas in this stretch and the road remains wet almost throughout the year. It also lacks any drainage system which contributes in deteriorating the road condition. There are two perennial sinking areas along the Mokokchung-Mariani border road. About 50 kilometers away from Mokokchung, towards Mariani, there is a sinking area under Chanki territory. The other sinking area is the one under Chungtia village territory, about 20 kilometers away from Mokokchung. Apart from the two major sinking areas, it was found that there were 8 landslideareasunderChangkiterritory, 2 under Chungtia territory and 1 under Aliba village territory. The whole stretch of the road is barely 12 feet wide, which is too narrow for even small vehicles to cross, let alone the trucks and other commercial/passenger vehicles. BRO labourers working in the two major sinking areas toldthiscorrespondentthatit will take at least another week to complete their job of constructing the retaining walls and filling it up with boulders. BRO labourers were seen constructing retaining walls to constrict both of the two perennial sinking areas. Some were also found constructing drainage bunds and filling up pot-holes. But there was no sign of any preparation for black-topping the road. No public pressure has been heard voiced against the authority concerned in recent times for the poor upkeep of this vital road.

One thunderstorm and Guwahati shows its naked truth guwahati, OctOber 22 (tOa): Guwahati, the gateway to the North east has often been claimed by the locals as a future hot spot of trade and commerce in South East Asia when India’s look “East Policy” materializes. It is been claimed as one of the fastest growing city in the country and the locals are found to take pride in growing number of shopping malls, private colleges and posh restaurants. But as nature has its own rules, the people as well as the administration were once again reminded of the ground realities yesterday, with just two hours of strong shower. Almost all places of the city were logged with flood waters, inundated with red mud bringing both traffic as well as life to a halt yesterday evening. Power went off in most parts of the city adding to the woes of the Guwahatians. The worst affected RG Baruah road, GNB road and Maniram Dewan road saw traffic coming to a standstill with vehicles unable to move and stuck in rising flood waters. Even localities such as Hatigaon and Beltola which usually does not see rain floods were flooded and roads blocked. People were stuck

Government on Friday. In support of the total bandh imposed by ANSAM, the Zelingrong Baudi ( Assam Manipur Nagaland) Joint Secretary, Chamrei Kamei, who was speaking at a press conference today at Noney Bazaar, Tamenglond district, said since the Governments of Manipur and Centre have not considered the demand for alternative arrangement for the Nagas in Manipur during the tripartite talks held among the three parties, the bandh has been called to protest against the negative attitude of the state Government. P Athui, who was also present at the press conference said, “We Nagas want to live under a single ad-

taking shelters at bus stands, shops and buildings while the situation grew worse at dark. Several people were reported to be injured while trying to walk across flood waters, stepping in pit-holes and due to low sightedness caused. On the other hand, it has been learnt that the power cuts in the city as well as in various parts of Assam were due to the damage done in the 220 Kv Karbi langpi – Sarusajai line due to the thunderstorms. However the Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) technicians were quick to act and power was restored by night in most areas. The picture depicted yesterday in Guwahati once again proved the futile claims of the Guwahati development Minister as well the administration regarding ability to tackle the increasing flood problem in the city. Besides, unplanned construction of houses, buildings at various localities of the city too have added to the floods, as the construction materials used often blocks up the drains and leads to floods. In addition, excessive digging of the hills, constructions initiated at several large water bodies has result-

ed in the natural imbalance. It is to be mentioned that after the complete failure of Himanta Biswa Sharma as Guwahati Development Department (GDD) Minister who only seemed to be warming the chair of the department, it is now headed by none other than Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi himself. If the hills and wetlands around Guwahati are not evicted from illegal settlers and constructions of real estate projects not stopped, problems such as artificial flash floods and landslides killing people after any small or big thunderstorm would continue to haunt the citizens of Guwahati. The environmental and Ecosystem has to be maintained if Guwahati has to be developed into a green, clean and developed city with its issues of drainage and floods solved. It is high time the Guwahati Master plan, often claimed and discussed about is actually well planned and implementation initiated. Strong public awareness programmes are strict enforcements of the administration in also a must, which unfortunately is largely lack as of date.

munity which KSO has taken very seriously, necessitating a clarification on ‘communal lines’ by it. "The state government is squarely to be blamed. Autonomous District Council (ADC) election was held for the Sadar Hills ADC. However, after the ADC was formed, the people of Sadar Hills were appalled to find that their ‘district’ had turned out to be ‘Senapati and we had a unique situation where two ADCs existed in a single district", said KSO. It said the state government must remember that it had conducted a successful election exercise with the support of the people of the district and that appropriate administrative structure should be in place and democratic governance and the rule of law should normally follow suit. KSO also said, “It would be pointless to debate about our origin or uniqueness unless we are discussing anthropology or genetic sci-

ence or demography.” Saying that as far the political rights are concerned, the Kuki had fought against a world power (British) to maintain their political control/supremacy in this part of the world and added that the majority Meitei of the plains too had done the same on separate/earlier occasion. "All these three communities have survived together for centuries till today. Unless we have a healthy respect for one another, communal hatred will destroy us all, not any outside force. And any political agenda of the Government directed along communal lines would spell our doom. It is on this ground that KSO is apprehensive of the move for’ alternative arrangement’ for Nagas within the state which, in the context of the current situation, the political history of Manipur, terminology and coverage, is unquestionably communal in nature", KSO added.

Karimganj, OctOber 22 (Pti): One of the two abducted North East Frontier Railway employees has managed to escaped from the clutches of suspected Reang militants in Assam's Hailakandi district, police said today. Assistant driver of a passenger train S K Sarma escaped after his abductors pushed him down a hill when he was unable to walk any further, they said. Sarma told police that after surviving the fall he trudged through forests to reach Badarpur late last night. He said after their abduction the drivers were made to walk for four hours through the forest and cross four rivers. The other abducted railway driver Tarun Kumar Bhattacharjee is yet to be rescued. CRPF, police, India Reserve battalion (IRB) and the Army have jointly launched a threepronged search operation from Assam, Mizoram and Tripura. Suspected militants had kidnapped the driver and assistant driver at Ramnathpur when the passenger train was going from Badarpur to Bhairavi in Mizoram on Thursday, they said. Meanwhile, Railway employees and their families protested today at Badarpur railway station in Karimganj district preventing movement of trains, demanding Bhattacharjee's rescue.

Eccentric: Gaddafi was one of the last of a dying breed of bloodthirsty, albeit wierdly-costumed, dictators

H

e called himself the King of Kings, but now he is dead. For anyone with a sense of justice, a world without Colonel Muammar Gaddafi is something to savour. As the patron of the Provisional IRA, the Red Brigades and the Baader-Meinhof Group, the Libyan despot was sponsoring massacres before many of his recent opponents were even born. And no one who remembers the appalling murder of Wpc Yvonne Fletcher, the bombing of a Berlin nightclub or the terrible slaughter at Lockerbie will shed a tear for this mad Libyan dictator. Gaddafi’s regime lasted a staggering 42 years. When he first came to power, toppling Libya’s King Idris in a military coup, Harold Wilson was in Downing Street, The Beatles were still a going concern and England were football’s world champions. But after four decades of the colonel’s rule, the ordinary people of Libya have little to show for it but their scars. In the history books, his name will go down alongside those of tyrants like Chairman Mao, Idi Amin and Saddam Hussein — men who claimed to be leading their downtrodden people to peace and prosperity, but would be remembered as bloodthirsty butchers. History will also record that the eccentric colonel was one of the last members of a dying breed. With his exit, the weirdly costumed dictators who strutted across the world stage in the Sixties and Seventies are close to extinction. In Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe’s horrendous regime clings on to power; in North Korea, the bizarre Kim Jong-Il is somehow still in charge; even in forgotten Belarus, Europe’s last dictator, Alexander Lukashenko, suppresses dissent with an iron fist. But although the world still has plenty of oppressive regimes, it has moved on from the days when an obscure military officer might dream of toppling his sovereign, donning dark glasses and ruling for the next half-century. For much of the 20th century it was dictatorship, not democracy, that seemed the model for the future. During the Twenties, for example, it was the strutting, posturing Benito Mussolini, the fascist darling of the Italian mob, who seemed the dynamic man of the future. A decade later, a generation of British intellectuals were drawn to Stalin, the ‘Man of Steel’ whose demented policies killed at least ten million people. And as late as the Sixties, Left-wing students even idolised the deeply unpleasant Chairman Mao, whose tyrannical regime killed an estimated 70 million of his fellow countrymen, more than Britain’s entire population today. Dictatorship was the norm in the communist world. Despite the rhetorical bluster about ‘People’s Democracies’, some communist leaders, like Romania’s Nicolae Ceausescu and Albania’s Enver Hoxha, clung on to power for decades. Although most Eastern European dictators were faceless bureaucrats, some were more colourful. The paranoid Hoxha, for example, sealed his country off from foreign influence and built hundreds of thousands of concrete bunkers along the coast to deter invasion — although, in truth, most Westerners had forgotten Albania was ever there. But to find the really bizarre dictators, you had to visit the newly-independent countries of the third world, where the withdrawal of the European empires had left a yawning power vacuum. With their political institutions half-formed and no history of democracy, many developing countries, such as Libya, fell victim to military coups. Some of the new military dictators, for example Egypt’s charismatic ruler Colonel Nasser, were relatively sane, providing much-needed social improvements for their downtrodden people. Unfortunately, Nasser was the exception, not the rule. Most third world dictators in the Sixties and Seventies were like refugees from some chamber of horrors. Desperate to emulate Napoleon and Hitler, they strutted the world stage in absurd uniforms, awarded themselves hundreds of medals and stole millions from their own people. In Haiti, for example, Francois Duvalier, ‘Papa Doc’, subjected his people to a reign of terror that almost defies belief. Rewriting the Lord’s Prayer so that it began: ‘Our Doc, who art in the National

Militaristic: Many dictators believed they were leading their nations to glory

Palace for life,’ he used to dress up as Baron Samedi, the voodoo spirit of the dead, wearing a dark suit, top hat and dark glasses. In some ways he cut a ludicrous figure. But there was nothing funny about his regime, for outside the palace walls, his Tontons Macoutes militia raped, tortured and murdered with impunity. Then there was Jean-Bedel Bokassa, a military officer who seized power in the Central African Republic in 1966 and ruled for the next 13 years, thanks partly to aid from Colonel Gaddafi. Bokassa at first seemed reasonably rational. But in December 1976 he abruptly announced that he was renaming his country — one of the very poorest on the planet — the Central African Empire. Crowning himself Emperor Bokassa I, he spent a third of the national budget on a lavish coronation, where he appeared to have dressed up as Napoleon. Schoolchildren even had to wear uniforms displaying images of his face, while hundreds of dissidents were tortured and murdered. The gold medal for chilling antics, though, went to the buffoonish Idi Amin, who misruled Uganda for eight years after 1971. Embarrassingly, Amin was a British creation, having held the highest possible rank for a black officer in the colonial British Army in those days. Away from the parade ground, Amin had a taste for rugby union. One British officer described him as ‘a splendid type and a good player, but virtually bone from the neck up, and needs things explained in words of one letter.’ To inspire him before big games, his Scottish officers used to hit him on the head with a hammer. At first, Amin’s coup against Uganda’s authoritarian leader Milton Obote was widely welcomed. But soon he yielded to the same tyrannical impulses that infected so many other dictators. After kicking out the Ugandan Asian middle classes, who promptly fled to Britain, Amin declared himself King of Scotland and took to wearing full Highland dress in the sweltering African weather. Like many third world dictators, Amin was obsessed with his former colonial masters. By 1977 he had adopted the title ‘His Excellency, President for Life, Field Marshal Al Hadji Doctor Idi Amin Dada, VC, DSO, MC, Lord of All the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Seas and Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa in General and Uganda in Particular.’ Foreigners often saw him as a comic figure: one American observer called him a ‘killer and clown, big-hearted buffoon and strutting martinet.’ But the Ugandan people were not laughing. By the time Amin was kicked out in 1979, he had killed an estimated half a million people, while his resource-rich country was poorer than ever. And although it is probably a myth that he dealt with dissidents by eating them or kept his opponents’ severed heads in his freezer, he certainly deserves his place in his continent’s hall of infamy. How on earth, you may wonder, did all these monsters win and wield power for so long? The truth is that they were a product of their times. With the collapse of the European colonial empires, huge swathes of the world were left without political institutions and democratic legitimacy. Often the only institution people respected was the army. Once upon a time, before they had earned their reputations for barbarism, men like Gaddafi, Amin and even Saddam Hussein were merely ambitious young officers who dreamed of leading their nations to glory. What kept them in power was the superpower rivalry of the Cold War. As the U.S. and Soviet Union scrambled to line up client states across the planet, dictators knew there would always be somebody to sponsor them. Most of the real monsters were backed by the Kremlin, but not all of them. Shamefully, American support kept Papa Doc in power, while the image of Donald Rumsfeld — later to become President George W. Bush’s defence secretary — shaking hands with Saddam Hussein in 1983 has become justly notorious. In this climate, all restraints were off. Again and again, the experience of wielding supreme power turned relatively normal husbands and fathers into raving lunatics. If nothing else, the great dictators proved the truth of Lord Acton’s famous maxim: ‘All power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely.’ At their peak, men like Gaddafi and Amin were often described as being inhuman. But perhaps the

really chilling thing is how human, mundane and ordinary they were. Their passions and obsessions, their lusts and hatreds, were merely the basest human emotions run riot. They were like Roman emperors, cocooned in their palaces and driven slowly mad. And although they were desperate to be taken seriously, there was something pathetic, almost adolescent, about their ridiculous medals and showy outfits, their aggressive promiscuity, their greed for money and their intolerance of criticism. But although a few Cold War relics, like the contemptible Robert Mugabe, still cling on, the days of the gold-braided dictator seem to be over. For many tyrants, the disappearance of the Soviet Union marked the beginning of the end. And as recent events in Libya, Egypt and Tunisia have shown, it is much harder to quell dissent when your people are using Twitter and Facebook to keep in touch with the outside world. No doubt the 21st century will throw up its fair share of villains. But it is worth noting that these days, most authoritarian regimes, such as Omar al Bashir’s Sudan, Thein Sein’s Burma or even Hu Jintao’s China, are led by relatively faceless, even bland figures. The days when a dictator renamed the months of the year after his members of his family, as Turkmenistan’s leader Saparmurat Niyazov did a few years ago, or kept an opponent’s head in his wardrobe, as Papa Doc notoriously did, are over. Today, most authoritarian rulers prefer to keep a low profile. In any case, real power no longer belongs with the medal-wearing figure strutting in front of the crowd, but with the grey men watching from their corporate boardrooms. To multinational giants such as Glencore, the world’s biggest commodity trader, which controls 50 per cent of the global copper market, 60 per cent of zinc and a quarter of the world’s barley, sunflower and rape seed, most of these dictators must look like pygmies. Glencore’s reclusive boss, Ivan Glasenberg, a billionaire who controls tin mines in Bolivia, copper mines in Zambia, Russian wheat farms and Kazakh zinc producers, makes the bombastic Libyan martinet cut a relatively feeble figure. In today’s globalised world, real influence over people’s lives often comes down to food prices and massive stock-market gambles. In New York, a futures trader — who makes a huge bet on what the price of wheat, for example, might be in a year’s time — picks up the phone; in Africa, thousands of people are either thrown out of work or face a famine. Why would you want to be a tinpot dictator when you could be a copper-bottomed, gold-plated plutocrat instead? Moreover, anybody hoping to follow in the great dictators’ footsteps would be well advised to consider the fate of the men who once wielded supreme power. Bokassa was put on trial and sent to prison, while Amin died in exile in a Saudi Arabian hotel. And they were relatively lucky. Saddam Hussein ended up skulking beneath the floorboards before a date with the hangman, while this week Colonel Gaddafi died a coward’s death after a Nato air strike. Of course, democracy is far from perfect. With its endless compromises and petty hypocrisies, it sometimes seems incapable of inspiring grand visions and noble dreams. But grand visions are best left to third world dictators and idealistic teenagers. And much as we might complain about our own political system, Winston Churchill had it right. ‘Democracy,’ he once remarked, ‘is the worst form of government — except all the others that have been tried.’ If there is any justice, then the long-suffering Libyan people, along with their counterparts in Egypt and Tunisia, will soon taste democracy for themselves. No doubt it will fall short of their expectations — but that is the price you pay for political maturity. Better that than another dictator any day. In the meantime, none of us should shed a tear for the death of Colonel Gaddafi. He was a cruel, arrogant and cold-hearted killer. He squandered his nation’s oil riches, his hands were stained with British blood and he does not deserve a scrap of pity. The real tragedy is that it took so long. (Source: Dailymail)

fter India's most celebrated Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan becoming the brand ambassador for Geneva-based Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC), now Indian cricket players are to promote sanitation and hygiene in the country. Yusuf Pathan and Irfan Pathan have already shot a clip, in which they are asking people: "Adopt the WASH hatrick - sanitation, hygiene, clean water - for healthy living". An international organisation WASH United is negotiating with various other cricket palyers also, including Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni, to take them on board in Wash United Cricket Club, for promotion of hand washing, especially among children. The posters of Pathans were displayed at the Global Forum on Sanitation and Hygiene, which has recently concluded in Mumbai. The Forum held by the WSSCC (Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council), saw the participation of over 450 people from over 70 countries. The WSSCC works with its partners all across the globe to ensure sustainable sanitation, better hygiene and safe drinking water for all people. "The idea was derived from a similar venture with football players, which proved great success in African nations,'' International Co-ordinator for WASH Thorsten Kiefer told this correspondent in Mumbai. Wash United is a social club that brings together leading sports stars, voluntary organisations, UN agencies and the private sector. Using the power of sports, it organises various activities in schools and reaches out to children to raise awareness about hygiene with a specific focus on handwashing. In South Asia, WASH United is focsusing particularly on sanitation and hygiene through cricket. The expanse of the campaign also includes other cricket loving South Asian nations - Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan. "There is probably no other sport that unifies and moves billions of people in South Asia like cricket does," says Keifer. "Sanitation is a non-attractive subject but celebrities like cricket stars can make it sound cool and an excitement can be built around the issue," he adds. The experiment became a success in Africa during the 2009 World Cup Football. Over 100 organisations in across eight nations Lesotho, Kenya, Ghana, Burkino Faso, Mali, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda - used football players namely Didier Drogba and Michael Ballack, to educate children the importance of handwashing. The result was that 30,000 children were trained and became the member of the club. Over 100 international and local stars supported the cause. "South Asian nations too are facing a crisis situation, tak the example of India where 600 million people go for open defecation every day although 700 million use mobile phones. The situation needs to be addressed through innovative ideas," says Kmal Kar, the Development Consultant and Chairman of the Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) Foundation, India. "Poor sanitation is costing developing nations 3-7 per cent of GDP every year. There is an urgent need to prioritise sanitation at national, regional, global and political levels," says Jon Lane Executive Director of WSSCC. As per United Nations statistics, a thousand children die in India from diarrhoea, which is a preventable disease as it is caused by consuming unsafe and dirty watr and poor hygiene. The figure puts India at the top in the world in diarrhoea ranking - much ahead of neighboring nations like Pakistan, Bangladesh and China. Starting a pilot campaign on Hand Washing Day on October 15, WASH United will aim to intensify the campaign during the next international 20:20 cricket series, which is scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and India in 2012, 2013 and 2014, respectively. It will involve cricket players from these nations to convey the message of sanitation among the masses, especially children and youth.

All About Dengue Fever Dr.B.S.R.Mahapatra

Dengue fever is a viral infection spread to human beings by the bite of a specific mosquito ‘CULICINE’, belonging to the gene ‘Aedes’. Otherwise commonly it is known as AEDES mosquito. The virus DENV, which is having four groups-1, 2.3, and 4 are found in the body of aedes mosquito. When a human being is bitten by it, the virus is lodged in human body. Out of 4 groups of virus, no.1 is most prevalent. The word dengue is pronounced ‘dengi’.It is mostly found in tropical and sub-tropical countries. South East Asian countries including India, Africa, Southern parts of United States and Northern parts of South America are mostly affected. Around 100 million cases are found in a year through out globe. This disease was specified and the name ‘dengue fever’ was given in 1779.The first epidemic of dengue was in 1780, covering Asia, Africa and North America. History- the exact origin is not clear. But first of all it started in Africa and spread to other regions, mostly by slave trade and travelers. Some others claim-it first appeared in Malay Peninsula of Indo-China. We can chronologically put the ‘Dengue Epidemic’ as follows.1.-Chin dynasty, China-265 to 420 A.D. 2-.Cairo and Alexandria in Egypt in 1799.3-Jakarta (Indonesia) in1799.4-Philadelphia (U.S.A.) in1780 and 5-Madras, India in 1780. The behavior of aedes mosquito is unlike female anopheles causing Malaria. One similarity-both malaria and dengue are from female ones. But dengue mosquito aedes does bite a person from dawn to dusk only, while malaria one does bite at night (nocturnal).Aedes mosquito does not fly. It jumps 3 to4 feet from ground. That is whyschool going children walking early in the morning without proper cover of feet, calf and knee are more vulnerable to get the bite and suffer from the disease. The incubation period of dengue is 5 to 6 days. It may be also from 3 to 10 days. Differential diagnosis-Dengue is to be differentiated from 1) Chinkungunya 2) Japanese Encephalitis 3) Leptospirosis 4) Rickettssiosis (Rocky Mountain spotted fever) and 5) Typhoid. No vaccine is available for dengue fever. SYMPTOMS-3 to 10 days after bite, sudden high fever, severe body ache allover the body, severe joint pain (that is why dengue is also known as (BREAK BONE FEVER), the patient suffers from. Besides half of the people affected, do have bright and red rashes in the body. Milder form of the disease, if progresses to severe form, there is persistent high fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, bleeding, circulatory failure, shock and death. Blood vomiting sometimes occurs. One saving grace-it is not infectious, but humid, warm climate aggravates the disease. Platelet, one of the components of the blood, whose normal value should be 150,000/cmm, goes down drastically and bleeding occurs in serious patients. There is no specific treatment for dengue fever. But analgesics to relieve pain and antipyretics to bring down high fever can be used. Paracetamol is the drug of choice. But analgesics having salicylates (aspirin) should never be given, which will worsen the condition and bleeding and vomiting may lead one to death. Plenty of oral rehydration salt (ORS), cold application to head can be given. In case of bleeding, blood serum or substitute and blood transfusion should be given. Oxygen inhalation can be utilized. In milder cases, mortality is negligent; but in serious cases proper care can save the valuable life. Don’t Let Your Pulpit Be Defiled

isiting ministers can be a great blessing to any church. But if you don’t do your homework, you could be inviting disaster. A friend of mine recently told me that the leaders of a ministry invited a prominent American preacher to speak at a conference. During discussions about the engagement, the preacher’s handlers explained two of the terms of his visit: (1) he was always to be addressed as “apostle” by anyone who spoke to him; and (2) he was to be ushered out of the auditorium and into a green room immediately after he delivered his sermon, to guarantee that he would not have to fraternize with the audience. He needed his privacy. If I had been on the other end of the telephone conversation that day, I would have offered this reply: “Please tell Apostle Arrogance that since he is so concerned about being bothered by the little people, never mind. Just don’t come. We don’t need the disease he is spreading in the body of Christ. God bless you.” “I have heard horror stories of ministers who required their hosts to provide shopping

money, certain types of exotic bottled water, limousines and manicurists. A childish rock star might be expected to ask for these luxuries, but such behavior is reprehensible for a minister of the gospel. Don’t cater to their appetites.” That may sound harsh, but I don’t think there’s any other way to prevent the spread of this plague. The “celebrity syndrome” is still alive in 2011, in spite of the recession, and the only way we are going to stop bigheaded charlatans from corrupting churches is to boycott them. We need to hand them a pink slip. I recommend these safeguards: 1. Investigate before you invite. There are many wonderful traveling ministers who carry genuine anointings and can bring great blessing to churches and ministry events. They have been called by God as evangelists, prophets, teachers and apostolic leaders—and those who walk in the anointing of the Holy Spirit will produce fruit wherever they go. But there are also imposters on the preaching circuit. Some of them once carried the anointing and lost it; others actually entered the ministry as fakes and learned to prey on naïve congregations. Don’t give anyone a platform who has a

questionable record. Always find out who they are accountable to. If they have no relationships, no oversight or no reference board, you are taking a great risk by having them in your church. 2. Slam the door on egotism. The celebrity syndrome is easy to detect. Does the visiting preacher have a servant’s spirit? Or does he come across as cocky and unapproachable? Any man or woman engaged in ministry should have the attitude of Jesus, who was willing to ride a donkey into Jerusalem and wash the feet of His disciples. If you allow a prideful, unbroken preacher in your pulpit, you are giving a spirit of Lucifer the opportunity to infect your congregation. 3. Don’t feed the spirit of entitlement. Every traveling minister appreciates a gracious host. You show honor when you provide him or her with a nice hotel room, meals and transportation during their stay. But you should be alarmed if a preacher demands celebrity treatment. I have heard horror stories of ministers who required their hosts to provide shopping money, certain types of exotic bottled water, limousines and manicurists. One preacher who recently ministered in Australia demanded a certain type of steak that had

to be flown across the Pacific Ocean from the United States! A childish rock star might be expected to ask for these luxuries, but such behavior is reprehensible for a minister of the gospel. Don’t cater to their appetites. 4. Don’t tolerate financial rape. I know of an American minister who traveled to a church in Canada and insisted that the pastor rent a civic auditorium that seated more than a thousand people. The pastor couldn’t afford the hall, but the evangelist said she wouldn’t come unless a large venue was provided. In the end, the evangelist canceled the trip because not enough people registered for the conference—and the pastor was left holding the bag. His church went bankrupt. A true minister of the gospel would never push a church to go into debt just to satisfy his or her egotistical need for a big crowd. Jesus was just as comfortable preaching to a few disciples as he was to a multitude, and He didn’t base success on numbers. If you fall into the numbers trap you will be sorry. Also, a shepherd who cares about his or her flock will never allow a visiting preacher to manipulate a congregation financially. Visiting speakers who spend 30 to 45 minutes begging for money, or making outlandish claims of “supernatural returns” for in-

vesting in their work, are shysters who need to leave the ministry and find a job on a home shopping network. 5. Beware of strange fire. A minister imparts his life, not just the words of his sermons. That is why it is so important for preachers of the gospel to walk in humility, sexual purity and financial integrity. If a minister has allowed compromise in any of those areas, his anointing will be hindered and he may pollute your pulpit and leave a toxic environment in your church. I talked to one pastor in California who had invited a speaker to his annual conference. But before the speaker arrived, the pastor learned that this man often used drug imagery in his sermons and even compared the Holy Spirit to marijuana. When he asked the speaker to refrain from such references, the man arrogantly refused. Thankfully the pastor did the right thing: He politely but firmly canceled the man’s visit. It is possible for us to “just say no” to the charlatans, shysters, con men and rock star evangelists who have never submitted their lives to the discipline of the Spirit. Please heed the warnings, inspect the fruit and be willing to disinvite. (J. Lee Grady is contributing editor of Charisma.)

If I had my life to live over Erma Bombeck

If I Had My Life To Live Over....... I would have talked less and listened more. I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained and the sofa faded. I would have eaten the popcorn in the ‘good’ living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace. I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth. I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed. I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage. I would have sat on the lawn with my children and not worried about grass stains. I would have cried and laughed less while watching television and more while watching life. I would have shared more of the responsibility carried by my husband. I would have gone to bed when I was sick instead of pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren’t there for the day. I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn’t show soil or was guaranteed to last a lifetime. Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy,I’d have cherished every moment and realized that the wonderment growing inside me was the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle. When my kids kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, “Later. Now go get washed up for dinner.” There would have been more “I love you’s”.. more “I’m sorry’s” But mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute...look at it and really see it... live it...and never give it back.

The Last Temptation of Christ

Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the anti-Christ is coming, even now many anti-christs have come. This is how we know it is the last hour. 1st John 2:18

I

n “The Last Temptation of Christ “, the Jesus we worship was portrayed as a confused sinner who struggled because of the sinful impulses in Him. The movie which is based on a novel “The Last Temptation of Christ “written by Nikos Kazantzakis is as controversial as the contents are. This act of heresy eventually created a legacy by a lunatic who signed his name in the book of hell through his own acts of deception. In a press statement Martin Scorsese, the director of the film said “ I tried to create a Jesus who in a sense is just like any other guy in the street. These statements are not only recorded in the media but these sins will be taken into account when the Day of Judgment comes. In a certain sequence of the movie, Christ was portrayed as visualizing Himself having sex with Mary Magdalene and then of committing immorality with other women. It’s sickening even to hear the entire sequence of the movie because of its heretic and cultic nature. It depicts Christ as a habitual sinner who has little control over His sexual passions. C.S. Lewis in his book “ Mere Christianity “ made this statement “ A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic on the level with the men who says he is a poached egg- or else he would be the devil of hell. You must make your choice either this was and is, the Son of God or else a mad man or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool… or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human being and a great teacher. He has not left that open to us. These statements are as true as the word is. I really appreciate the way this has been put forth in order to destroy the credentials of the heretic movie.

Some may either ignore or condemn this. But the reality needs to be made known that it threatens the survival of many lovers of sin and the lovers of god alike. We cannot just dismiss the issue just because of our ignorance of it. But we need to confront it with the spiritual powers which are in us. Since this is a spiritual issue the obvious answer to the said question is that it needs to be solved spiritually. The film was launched with the intention to portray the messiah as a sinful messiah. If this is the Jesus they believe in, they will surely die in their sins. This controversy is part of the fulfilled prophecies and the worst of it are still yet to come. The Word said “In the last time there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires. These are the men who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit (Jude 18-19 ). This ought to convince you that you are now in the era of the last days filth. A point to be noted is that this “Little Controversy will be remembered even in hell. In hell sinners will be able to think, feel and scream but there will be no way out for them to escape the torments of it. Whoever adds anything to whatever is written in the scripture; the lake of fire will become his or her ultimate destiny. It is sad that this has to happen and I certainly pity the pioneers of it. The damage has already been done and the sinners will have to pay with their life if they repent not of their sins. These pioneers of sin fears no hell because they fear no God. But in the end when these ungodly men and women are judged for their ungodly ways, they will have no reason to protect themselves from the fiery curses of God’s wrath. Either this controversy has to be killed or the ones who are responsible will be killed because of it. As members of the Church of Christ we sternly condemn this sin. Though we hate the sin, we still love and care for the sinners. The movie will not be in hell but its producers will be in it if they intend to market their products at the expense of Christ. The Lord watches this and the guilty will never go away unpunished. The hour of crisis has begun. Ambrose.J.Chakre, Founder President Ambrose Foundation in Christ Ministries Kohima Nagaland

2G scam: Charges framed against Raja, 16 others

New Delhi, OctOber 22 (AgeNcies): Former Telecom Minister A Raja, DMK MP Kanimozhi and 15 others including top corporate honchos will be put on trial in the multi-crore 2G spectrum scam with a Delhi Court on Saturday framing charges against them on various counts like criminal conspiracy, breach of trust, cheating and forgery. All the accused have been charged under Section 409 of IPC for alleged criminal breach of trust which attracts a maximum punishment of life term. The other charges attract various terms in jail. Special CBI judge O. P. Saini fixed November 11 for commencement of the trial after all the accused refused to plead guilty to various offences. The framing of charges may now now pave the way for the accused, who have been behind the bars for several months, to seek bail as the Supreme Court had virtually embargoed all the courts not to entertain their plea before framing of charges. Besides Mr. Raja and Ms. Kanimozhi, the judge framed charges against corporate executives of Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani group’s Managing Director Gautam Doshi, Surendra Pipara, Group’s President and Hari Nair, senior Vice President, Swan Telecom promoter Shahid Usman Balwa, his cousin Asif Balwa, their colleague Rajeev Agarwal, Unitech Ltd’s MD Sanjay Chandra and DB Re-

‘We have to fight, fight, fight’ New Delhi, OctOber 22 (AgeNcies): “They have charged me with everything,” former Communications Minister Andimuthu Raja, prime accused in the 2G spectrum scam, told his wife in Tamil during hearings scheduled to read out the charges against him on Saturday morning. “What is there…We have to fight, fight, fight,” he told another well-wisher with a smile when the latter greeted him inside the Delhi court where Special CBI Judge OP Saini framed the charges against the 17 accused. The accused, accompanied by their police escorts and an army of lawyers, packed the small Central Bureau of Investigation court that was already jampacked with reporters and worried relatives of the accused. Dressed in a white shirt and black trousers, the first accused in the 2G case (Raja) looked the least bit troubled by the criminal breach of trust charge framed against him (among a series of other charges under the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act). Rajathi Ammal watched her daughter thoughtfully as Kanimozhi put on a brave face, talking and smiling to acquaintances who were present in court. Dressed in a green and black salwar kameez, Kanimozhi appeared to be at ease and seemed cheerful as she chatted with her son and husband, who were also sitting with Rajathi Ammal. the court said she had been “in regular touch” with Mr. Raja to serve the cause of party-run Kalaignar TV, of which she was a Director and 20 percent stakeholder, regarding launching of the channel. The court said Ms. Kanimozhi along with Mr. Raja was “pursuing the cause of Kalaignar TV not only for getting registration of the company from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting but also for getting it in the Tata Sky bouquet“. New Delhi, OctOber 22 (Pti): With a Delhi court framing charges against 17 persons in 2G case, BJP on Saturday demanded a CBI probe to ascertain the role of then finance minister P Chidambaram in the scam and insisted that he should either step down or be sacked to facilitate a fair investigation. A special CBI court on Saturday framed charges like criminal conspiracy, breach of trust, cheating and forgery against former telecom minister A Raja, DMK MP Kanimozhi and 15 others, including top corporate honchos, paving the way for their trial in the multi-crore 2G spectrum scam. “There are sufficient prima facie charges to prove they are guilty. We hope the trial happens speedily and justice is done. However, questions do remain about those not chargesheeted, who are not being investigated or even questioned for their role in the 2G scam,” BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said. BJP maintained that a Cabinet decision taken in 2003 states that decisions by the telecom ministry were to be taken only after consultations and go-ahead of the finance ministry. “This implies that decisions in the 2G spectrum allocation were taken with the consent of the cabinet, the finance minister and the Prime Minister. A Raja had engaged in a criminal conspiracy. The exminister continues to say that this particular charge can equally apply to the then finance minister (Chidambaram),” Sitharaman said. BJP demanded that Chidambaram should either resign from the post of home minister or be removed and a CBI probe under the supervision of the Supreme Court be ordered to ascertain his role in the scam.

Criminal conspiracy Shahid Usman Balwa, the promoter of Swan Telecom and other five co-accused Vinod Goenka, Rajiv Agarwal, Asif Balwa, Karim Morani and Sharad Kumar have also been charged with the offence of hatching criminal conspiracy to file false evidence in judicial proceedings for showing the bribe trail of Rs 200 crore as a loan transaction. The judge said they were allegedly involved in the money trail and “created false documents to show the bribe amount of Rs 200 crore as loan and with a view to use them in any stage of judicial

proceedings and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 193 (giving false evidence) read with 120B IPC and within my cognisance.” Raja, and other 13 accused persons are in judicial custody since their arrests. The charges framed against all the accused under various provisions of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act entail punishment ranging from six months jail term to rigorous life imprisonment. The court had reserved its order on October 14 after hearing day-to-day arguments on behalf of accused

and the CBI for nearly two months. Special CBI Prosecutor U U Lalit had argued that there was “sufficient prima facie” evidence against all the accused to proceed with the trial as everyone of them was part of the conspiracy and the intent to commit offence “may be inferred from their knowledge“. On the other hand, all the accused had vehemently opposed the framing of charges and the plea of CBI that they caused a loss to the state in the grant of spectrum licenses. The probe is on and CBI is expected to file third charge sheet in the case.

New Delhi, OctOber 22 (iANs): Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal had siphoned Rs.70-80 lakh belonging to India Against Corruption (IAC), headed by Anna Hazare, and diverted the money to his private trust, alleges activist Swami Agnivesh who has now parted ways with the anti-graft movement. Kejriwal has demanded evidence for the charges made by Agnivesh. “Kejriwal siphoned Rs.70-80 lakh received as public donations during Anna Hazare’s 12-day fast at Ramlila Ground in August into his private trust. It is a sad situation that the movement that began to fight corruption is involved in corrupt practices,” Agnivesh told agency. The Magsaysay award winner, he claimed, was refusing to produce the accounts. According to Agnivesh, who was one of the founding members of the IAC, Kejriwal had delayed the operating of an account in the name of IAC despite several directions from the core committee to do so. “Kejriwal instead saw to it that the contributions to the anti-corruption movement are re-

ceived in the accounts of his private trust - Public Cause Research Foundation(PCRF).” “This is a blow to the millions of people who had great expectations on the movement,” he said. Reacting to the charges, all that Kejriwal would tell agency in an SMS message was: “Did he give any evidence?” Agnivesh, whose photograph still appears on the IAC website, was ousted from Team Anna in August for his alleged proximity to the government. According to Agnivesh, Hazare had stated at a meeting of the core committee in his village Ralegan Sidhi in September that donations should have been received in a proper account of the IAC. Hazare had directed Kejriwal to publish the accounts by a scheduled date but that has also not been done, Agnivesh added. The allegations come after The Indian Express reported Thursday that Kiran Bedi, a key member of Team Anna, had inflated travel bills when invited by NGOs and other institutions for seminars or meetings. The newspaper claimed to be in possession of copies of bills, invoices and cheques, which show that Bedi, who is entitled to a rebate on Air India tickets as a gallantry award winner, paid discounted fares but charged her host institutions the full fare. Defending herself, Bedi has said the organisations that invited her “voluntarily” paid her for business class tickets but she travelled economy and the money saved went to her NGO India Vision Foundation. The clouds of controversy around Team Anna have been darkening.

Minister J. Jayalalithaa Saturday hit out at the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government accusing it of penalizing non-Congress-ruled states and said people living in those states were as much citizens of India as those in Congress-ruled states. “The central government seems to be hell-bent on penalizing nonCongress governments. This government at the centre does not seem to understand that the people living in the states under non-congress governments are as much citizens of India as those in the states where the Congress party is in power,” Jayalalithaa said at the 56th National Development Council (NDC) meeting held here. “I am not sure that the gov-

Some opposition chief ministers, including J. Jayalalithaa, had in their speeches at the NDC meeting accused the United Progressive Alliance government of step-motherly treatment. Manmohan Singh concluded by saying that the suggestions given by various states would be incorporated wherever deemed fit.

charged the centre with reducing these states to the level of “glorified municipal corporations”. Funds for the central government’s various social programmes should be routed through the state government

instead of giving them directly to the implementation agencies, she said. “I am afraid that no useful purpose is going to be served by convening this National Development Council Meeting,” Jayalalithaa said.

Targeted Violence (Access to Justice and Reparations) Bill, 2011 are “fascist and antidemocratic in nature”, Jayalalithaa said. “Even attacks on fishermen belonging to Tamil Nadu in the Palk Bay by Sri Lanka are not looked upon as acts of aggression against India. This issue is merely looked upon as a minor problem concerning Tamil Nadu alone,” Jayalalithaa charged. Jayalalithaa called for introspection on the failures to achieve the 11th plan targets before embarking on to the 12th one. She said firm macroeconomic management has to be combined with adroit and innovative strategies to ensure that the trend reaches its logical conclusion.

Mamata blames some people for creating confusion on Teesta

New Delhi, OctOber 22 (AgeNcies): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday blamed “some people” for creating “confusion” on the Teesta water sharing issue and hoped that cordial ties between India and Bangladesh would continue. “Some people created confusion on (Teesta water issue)... we maintained the best relations with Bangladesh and I hope India and Bangladesh will work together,” Mamata said. She also denied having any issues with the Centre over the Tinbigha corridor. “There is no issue over the

Tinbigha with our government. It is between India and Bangladesh government,” she said when asked whether she is annoyed with the Centre on Tinbigha issue. While Mamata had declined to be part of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Dhaka last month, she was absent during the Bangladesh Prime Minister’s visit to Tinbigha corridor on October 19. Asked about her stand on the threat from Maoists, she said she is very much against bloodshed and wants them to join the mainstream. “They are our brothers and sisters and they should

come forward and join the national mainstream and whatever they want from the government we are willing to discuss. We will give them full package,” she said. She said the option of discussion should be open in a democracy. We can discuss, we can negotiate, if they listen to us, then it is good. We do not want bloodshed or bloodbath. We do not encourage killings.” Asked whether Naxalites have changed their stand and are now opposing her government in the state, Banerjee said, “It is not true. Their sister organisationscontestedelectionsagainstus. They

contested Parliament elections and also Assembly elections. They boycotted the electionsandbecauseofthatCPI(M)won some seats.” She, however, said, “All Naxalites are not bad. There are some good Naxalites who are doing good work. One sectiondoesnotbelieveindemocracybut it is their prerogative. We want them to come into the national stream.” Expressing her readiness for talks, she said, “I am ready for talks but we are against bloodshed or killings. Every drop of blood is important we must sacrifice blood for the country and for humanity. But individual killings will not give any result.”

Fluctuating legal fortunes of a CM & 2 ex-CMs

bANgAlOre, OctOber 22 (iANs): It was a week of mixed legal fortunes for three leading politicians of two neighbouring southern states, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, with all the courtroom drama centred in Bangalore. It also demonstrated the supremacy of the rule of law in the country and the pre-eminence of the judiciary that sought accountability from three high-profile politicians for their omissions and commissions while they were in power. In fact, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, who faced grilling in a Bangalore court for around ten hours in two days Oct 20 and 21 in a 15-year-old corruption case, is back in power and was, in effect, Friday celebrating the victory of her party, the AIADMK, in local polls. She has answered around 600 questions on how she acquired assets of over Rs.66 crore between 1991-96, when also she was chief minister, while taking only one Re.1 as salary. She has been asked to return Nov 8 to respond to another 600 questions on the issue. For two former Karnataka chief ministers, too, it was a mixed day. B.S. Yeddyurappa, the most powerful man in the state till some months ago, went

back to jail in two corruption cases and waits for bail from the high court. His predecessor, H.D. Kumaraswamy, was luckier, however, as the high court threw out two corruption cases against him. In one of the cases, his legislator-wife Anita was also an accused. The week ending Oct 22 was perhaps the busiest for Karnataka judiciary in terms of the corruption cases it handled and the number of political leaders involved. The special Lokayukta (ombudsman) court judge N.K. Sudhindra Rao, who sent Yeddyurappa to judicial custody Oct 15, ordered police attached to the anti-corruption body to probe land grab charges against Karnataka home minister R. Ashoka. Rao is to decide Monday whether to order a probe into land grab charges against another Karnataka minister, Murugesh Nirani, who handles the industries portfolio. It was Rao who had ordered probe against Kumaraswamy and his wife on a complaint by a Bangalore advocate. Rao is additional sessions judge and functions as Lokayukta special court for speedy disposal of corruption cases. Reaction of the Bangalorean to so many court cases involving political leaders in one week was one of disbe-

lief and welcome. “Political corruption has become alarming and, hence, it is no surprise that judiciary is hauling up leaders accused of illegal dealings,” said M. Narasimhaiah, retired political science professor in Bangalore. “Found it difficult to believe that Jayalalithaa has to answer over a thousand questions on her assets,” said K. Shubhada, an opthalmologist in Bangalore. “I am happy that politicians are facing the heat these days as getting a bail is also not that easy any more,” said S.K. Shankar, an electrical goods shop owner in Jayanagar, a major shopping area in south Bangalore. While Kumaraswamy, now Janata Dal-Secular Lok Sabha member from Karnataka, has got relief, Jayalalaithaa’s lawyers say she may move the Supreme Court to seek exemption from personal appearance in the Bangalore court again. The case was registered in Chennai court in 1996 soon after she lost power but was transferred to Bangalore by the Supreme Court in 2003 to ensure free and fair trial. This is Jayalalithaa’s first appearance in the Bangalore court. For Yeddyurappa, Ashoka and Nirani, all from Bharatiya Janata Party, agonizing waiting for relief has just begun.

Thai PM calls for unity to defend capital from floods

bANGKOK, OCtOber 22 (reuterS): Thailand's prime minister called for all agencies to collaborate to protect the capital from a potential deluge of floodwater on Saturday as thousands fled high-risk areas or scrambled to protect their homes. Thailand's worst flooding in 50 years has been threatening to hit Bangkok for several days and Yingluck Shinawatra's government was pinning its hopes on diverting floodwaters from the north around the city and into the sea. Bangkok was clear and sunny for a second day on Saturday, but the threat of heavy rain still loomed large, with defense walls holding, for now, and canals already full to the brim carrying millions of cubic metres of water toward the sea. "The water is coming close to Bangkok," Yingluck said in a televised address on Saturday. "All agencies have to be united where tackling the runoff is concerned, because successfully diverting the water to drain into the sea via east Bangkok would hinge on all relevant agencies moving in a concerted effort." The floods have killed at least 342 people since July and devastated seven industrialized areas to the north of Bangkok, inflicting damage estimated at least $3.3 billion and putting tens of thousands of Thais temporarily out of work. Myanmar has suffered at least 100 deaths and Cambodia, 247 as a result of severe flooding. Thailand's central bank said on Thursday and that 2011 economic growth might be about 3 percent rather than the 4.1 percent it had previously forecast. Finance Minister Thirachai Phuvanatnaranubala had a gloomier forecast for Southeast Asia's second-

biggest economy and said growth might be barely 2 percent this year. Thais across Bangkok moved electrical equipment and possessions to higher ground and tens of thousands of cars were moved to bridges and elevated roads, with the city's looping network of highways turned into car parks. Supermarkets and convenience stores were empty of bottled water and instant noodles. People were seen buying up sacks of ice which they were melting into drinking water. Many of the city's thousands of street restaurants were shuttered on Saturday, and some people using social media complained of food shortages in areas already flooded. The old airport in northern Don Muang area was turned into an evacua-

tion center, taking in more than 3,000 people who slept in departure lounges or tents pitched in the arrivals hall. PRESSURE PILES ON PM Across some roads in northern Bangkok, water was seeping out of underground drains, with steel manhole covers seen hovering above the ground. The crisis has become a major test for the politically inexperienced, 44-year-old Yingluck, whose government has been widely criticized for mismanaging the crisis and sending conflicting signals to the public. A week ago, the government said Bangkok was in the clear. Now, it is warning residents to prepare themselves. One obstacle for Yingluck is her need to rely on political rivals and the military to

cooperate and coordinate to protect the city and regulate water flowing through sluice gates, estimated at 8-10 million cubic metres each day. Bangkok's metropolitan authority is controlled by the opposition Democrat Party, while the military has a frosty relationship with the ruling Puea Thai Party because of its de facto leader and Yingluck's brother, Thaksin Shinawatra, the self-exiled former premier overthrown by the army in 2006. Yingluck has also been at odds with Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra over jurisdiction and how to tackle the floods. She said on Saturday it was vital the government and city authorities acted as one instead of criticising each other. Some rain was expected on Sunday and thunderstorms in the days

after, according to the Meteorological Department. It was not known whether enough water could be diverted in the coming days to prevent the city from flooding once the rain comes. Bangkok has so far escaped the full force of the flooding, with the industrialized fringe provinces of Ayutthaya, Pathum Thani and Nonthaburi among the worst hit, withwaterlevelsashighas two metres and people seen people packed into boats and some residents believed to be stuck in their homes. A total of 27 of Thailand's 77 provinces are affected, with water covering an area 16 times the size of Hong Kong. The potential economic damage from serious flooding in the city of at least 12 million people is huge, with Bangkok ac-

counting for 41 percent of gross domestic product. Manufacturing plants in the northern outskirts of Bangkok have ceased operations, affecting foreign firms with production bases inside the kingdom and disrupting supply chains. A cut in production of computer hard drives threatens to disrupt some manufacturers as soon as December, hurting tech giants like Intel, Apple and Dell. Thailand is a also big regional hub for the car makers and most are suffering disruption, with Japanese car makers trimming output by about 6,000 units a day. Analysts also estimate that about 2 million tonnes of milled rice may have been ruined in Thailand, the world's top rice exporter and traders, with delays in loading rice for export.

Pakistan, three others elected to U.N. council

uNIteD NAtIONS, OCtOber 22 (reuterS): Pakistan, Morocco, Togo and GuatemalawereelectedonFriday to the 15-nation U.N. Security Council for 2012 and 2013, and Islamabad's envoy said he looked forward to working with fellow council member India. The race for a fifth council seat, representing Eastern Europe, was adjourned until Monday after neither of the twocandidates,Azerbaijanand Slovenia, was able to win a twothirds majority of the General Assembly after nine votes. In the most competitive council elections for years, only Guatemala ran unopposed within its region. Pakistan scraped through in the first round of voting, defeating Kyrgyzstan for an Asian seat with the minimum required tally. Morocco scored an easy first-round victory, while the small West African state of Togo won out in the third round with a tally more than double Mauritania's. That saved sub-Saharan Africa the embarrassment of ending up withonlyoneofthecontinent's threeseatsagainsttwoforArab North Africa. For Eastern Europe, Azerbaijan and Slovenia battled it out all day after a third candidate, Hungary, pulled out after trailing in the first ballot. The race swung both ways, but Azerbaijan led Slovenia by the end of the day with 113 votes to 77, still 14 votes short of clinching a win. Pakistani Ambassador Abdullah Hussain Haroon welcomed his country's election to the United Nations' elite body and said he expected to work well with the ambassador of Pakistan's archrival India, Hardeep Singh Puri, next year. "You have seen that the usual tendencies have not erupted between us and that is a good factor," Haroon said. "Perhaps both of us have been

beneficial in starting dialogue between both the countries." India joined the council this year and will stay through 2012. India and Pakistan have fought three wars, mainly over Kashmir, since gaining independence from Britain in 1947. The last time the two nucleararmed states served together on the council was in 1977. U.N. diplomats said they do not expect any regional tension as a resultofPakistanjoiningagain. Pakistan has served six previous council terms, The Security Council is the powerhouse of the United Nations, with the abilitytoimposesanctionsand dispatch peacekeeping forces. Western diplomats said it is likely that Pakistan will take over from Brazil by joining Russia and China, India and South Africa in resisting renewed U.S. and European pressure to sanction nations like Syria and Iran. In Africa, the African Union endorsed only Togo and Mauritania. Obama touts foreign policy Saudi Crown Prince Sultan dies, focus on Prince Nayef successes in Iraq, Libya

WASHINGtON, OCtOber 22 (reuterS): President Barack Obama sought on Saturday to cast himself as a strong leader on foreign policy, highlighting a U.S. pullout from Iraq and the death of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi as success stories. In a message Obama is likely to push in his 2012 reelection campaign, he said his leadership had made it possible to turn the page on a decade of war and refocus on bolstering the U.S. economy and paying down the national debt. Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address that Gaddafi's death and the announcement that all U.S. troops would be removed from Iraq this year were "powerful reminders of how we've renewed American leadership in the world." The emphasis on foreign policy comes as confidence in Obama's stewardship of the economy has fallen sharply, causing his overall approval ratings to slide to around 42 percent,

the lowest of his presidency. With the economy's woes weighing heavily on Americans' minds, Obama may have trouble gaining political traction from his message on foreign policy. The killing in May of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden by a U.S. Navy Seal team in Pakistan brought only a temporary boost to Obama's poll numbers.

Russia bans U.S. officials in tit-for-tat visa row

MOSCOW, OCtOber 22 (reuterS): Russia has banned some U.S. officials from visiting the country in response to U.S. visa restrictions imposed on Russian officials over the death in prison death of hedge fund lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, Russia's Foreign Ministry said on Saturday. "On the basis of reciprocity, the list of U.S. citizens whose stay in the Russian Federation was considered undesirable was approved," Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said on the ministry's website. The ministry declined to comment when contacted by Reuters. Lukashevich said the list included "highranking officials accessorial to ... crimes," such as "de facto legalized tortures in American special jails, kidnapping ... continuous imprisonment of detainees in Guantanamo, uninvestigated killings of civilians in

Iraq and Afghanistan." The State Department said in July it had placed visa restrictions on Russian officials accused of involvement Magnitsky's death in a Russian prison as he awaited trial on tax evasion and fraud charges in 2009. Russia's Foreign Ministry said the U.S. visa restrictions were unjustified and it would respond with "adequate measures." Lukashevich said that the list of U.S. citizens barred from entering Russia could be expanded, without giving further details. "If the U.S. party follows the path of visa confrontation, we will be prompted to expand the list." The statement, which confirms reports by Russian media, is another sign that the "reset" aimed at improving U.S.-Russian relations under President Barack Obama and Russian president Dmitry Medvedev is under threat.

Obama mentioned bin Laden in the radio speech and said victories against al Qaeda -- along with the policies toward Iraq and Libya -- were "part of a larger story" of success. "In Libya, the death of Muammar Gaddafi showed that our role in protecting the Libyan people, and helping them break free from a tyrant, was the right thing to do," he said. "In Iraq, we've succeeded in our strategy to end the war," Obama added. Prominent Republicans have criticized the decision to fully withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq, saying it would embolden neighboring Iran. Republicans also contend Obama has hurt America's image by pursuing a "leading from behind" strategy on the "Arab Spring" uprisings. Mitt Romney, the frontrunner in the Republican race to challenge Obama in 2012, in a speech earlier this month accused the president of pulling back from the view that America should be the "strongest nation on Earth."

DubAI, OCtOber 22 (reuterS): Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Sultan has died, the royal court said on Saturday, opening the way for Interior Minister and reputed conservative Prince Nayef to become the likely heir apparent of the world's top oil exporter. Prince Sultan, whose age was officially given as 80 and who died in New York of colon cancer early on Saturday Saudi time, had been a central figure in Saudi decision-making since becoming defense minister in 1962 and was made crown prince in 2005. Saudi analysts predicted an orderly transition at a time when much of the rest of the Middle East is in turmoil as populations have risen up against their autocratic leaders. Sultan's health had declined in recent years and he spent long periods outside the kingdom for medical treatment. A 2009 U.S. diplomatic cable released by WikiLeaks described him as "to all intents and purposes incapacitated." The country's ruler, King Abdullah, is now likely to summon an untested Allegiance Council of the ruling al-Saud family to approve his preferred heir.

Most analysts believe that is likely to be Prince Nayef, who was appointed second-deputy prime minister in 2009, a position usually given to the man who is third-in-line to rule. "The succession will be orderly," said Asaad al-Shamlan, a professor of political science in Riyadh. "The point of reference will be the ruling of the Allegiance Council. It seems to me most likely Nayef will be chosen. If he becomes crown prince, I don't expect much immediate change." He has gained a reputation as more conservative than either King Abdullah or Prince Sultan, with a close relationship with the country's powerful clergy. However, as king he might be more likely to follow to a moderate line in keeping with the al-Saud tradition of governing by consensus, say analysts. King Abdullah set up the Allegiance Council in 2006 to make the family's complex succession process more transparent. In the past, the succession was decided in secret by the king and a coterie of powerful princes, before being made public. Under the new system, the 34 branches of the ruling family born

to the kingdom's founder King Abdulaziz Ibn Saud will each have a vote to confirm the king's nominee for crown prince or appoint their own candidate. Prince Nayef has been interior minister since 1975 and has managed the kingdom's day-to-day affairs during absences of both the king and crown prince. Saudi television broke its normal schedule early on Saturday to broadcast Koranic verses and footage of pilgrims circling the Kaaba in Mecca, Islam's ho-

liest site. However, as the royal court prepared for the transition of Prince Sultan's role to a new crown prince, shops, schools and universities were open as normal in Riyadh. "With deep sorrow and sadness the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz mourns the death of his brother and his Crown Prince Sultan... who died at dawn this morning Saturday outside the kingdom following an illness," said a Saudi royal court statement

carried on official media. Funeral services for Sultan, who died on Friday New York time, will be held on Tuesday in Riyadh. An official at the Saudi embassy in Washington confirmed that Prince Sultan had died in New York but declined to give further details. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton expressed her condolences over the death, saying U.S.-Saudi ties are strong. "The Crown Prince was a strong leader and a good friend to the United States over many years, as well as a tireless champion for his country," Clinton said during a visit to Tajikistan, in the first official U.S. comment on his death. "Our relationship with Saudi Arabia is strong and enduring and we will look forward to working with the (Saudi) leadership for many years to come," she told a news conference. Kuwait, where the ruling family has been allied to the al-Saud for more than a century, said it would mark Sultan's death with three days of official mourning. Jordan's King Abdullah said: "I would like to express my sincere condolences to my brother, the custodian of the two holy mosques.

Libya’s Jibril sees elections within eight months DeAD SeA, JOrDAN, OCtOber 22 (reuterS): Libyans should be allowed to vote within eight months to elect a national council that would draft a new constitution and form an interim government, Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril said Saturday as he prepared to step down. After the death of Muammar Gaddafi this week, the priority was to remove weapons from Libyan streets, restore stability and order and begin a process of national reconciliation, Jibril said at the World Economic Forum in Jordan. "The first election should take place within a period of eight months, maximum, to constitute a national congress of Libya, some sort of parliament," he said. "This national congress would have two tasks -- draft a constitution, on which we would have a referendum, and the second to form an interim government to last until the first presidential elections are held," said Jibril. tional Council (NTC) that led the fight against Gaddafi has said it plans to declare the full "liberation" of Libya Sunday after the killing of Gaddafi by fighters who overran his home town Sirte. Jibril, an expatriate academic who strikes a modern, Western-friendly image, told Reuters Saturday that he planned to step

down "today," a move he had planned to make once the country was under full government control. He said Gaddafi's death left him feeling "relieved and reborn." Commenting on the disgust felt by many at the sight of Gaddafi's bloodstained, bullet-holed body, he told Reuters: "People in the West don't understand

the agony and pain that the people went through during the past 42 years. Jibril said Gaddafi's body, which lay unburied in a meat locker in the city of Misrata Saturday, would be buried within 48 hours in accordance with Islamic practice. Gaddafi's demise was the main goal that united the rag-tag militias and defected

army battalions that have battled his forces since an uprising began in February. Libya's future stability will require the NTC that appointed Jibril -- comprised of secular liberals, Islamists and tribal elders -- to prove a willingness to compromise, a quality that was anathema under Gaddafi's system of one-man rule. Progress would depend on two things, said Jibril. "First what kind of resolve the NTC will show in the next few days, and the other thing depends mainly on the Libyan people -whether they differentiate between the past and the future," he said. "I am counting on them to look ahead and remember the kind of agony they went through in the last 42 years." Jibril said the north African country, which Gaddafi turned into a major energy exporter, needed a vision for finding another source of income because Libya had already consumed 62 percent of its oil.

"We need to seize this very limited opportunity," he said. "We should use this time properly to build an alternate economy as fast as possible." Some Libyan officials have said countries that failed to back a NATO bombing campaign that helped dislodge Gaddafi, including Russia, China and Germany, or were slow to denounce Gaddafi, such as Italy, could lose out in Libyan oil deals. Libya's National Oil Corporation said this week it had summoned Russian energy group Gazprom to a meeting in Tripoli to discuss what the Libyans said was a breach of investment obligations. In a warning to Libya's future leaders, Jibril said the next government must not to allow politics to influence the award of oil contracts. "I can advise the coming interim government that the economic rule should be the rule. It's very dangerous to have contracts based on politics," he said.

F1 world waits eagerly for new racing destination India

NEW DELHI, OctObEr 22 (PtI): India is the buzzword in the Formula One circuit right now not just for being the newest venue in the racing calendar but also because of the Taj Mahal, butter chicken and its cricketers. The leading drivers in the sport and the technical personnel are all excited to get a taste of country's culture, food and its people. If Mercedes' driver Nico Rosberg has already planned a trip to the historic Taj Mahal in Agra, Sauber's Kamui Kobayashi can't wait to have his favourite butter chicken from its original place. F1 great Michael Schumacher has heard about India as a "fascinating" country and is looking forward to experience the new culture. Australian Mark Webber from the dominant Red Bull Racing team knows that India have some "fantastic cricketers" and desires to see his country taking on World Champion India some time in future. With less than a week left for the F1 action to unfold in India, the leading drivers have started focussing on the country as an F1 destination. Red Bull drivers -- the youngest double champion Sebastian Vettel and Webber -- are pursuing the remaining three races seriously despite having already sealed both the drivers' and constructors' championship. They have started the preparation for the inaugural Indian Grand Prix through simulator. "What I know so far is that the track

is 5.14-km and is a combination of slow corners and high-speed straights which flow into each other. We're expecting the track to have the second highest average speed of the season after Monza. That means that we'll be completing a lap at an average speed of 235 km/h, so there should be plenty of good opportunities to overtake. I'm really looking forward to India. I always do when we drive on a new track," Vettel said. Mark Webber said the weather conditions would be challenging. "We have completed some good simulator work, but in terms of the kerbs and other subtle final details, these will obvi-

ously come into place right at the end, so I'd say we have an 85 percent understanding of what the track is going to be like. It's going to be pretty warm, which is going to be a challenge for the tyres. "I've never been to India before. There are some amazing cricket players from India - it's their number one sport and I'd love to watch Australia play cricket there someday. I'm looking forward to the weekend," said Webber. Team Sauber -- local outfit Sahara Force India's nearest competitor -- driver Kamui Kobayashi can't help himself from getting a bit greedy when it comes to food. "It will be my first time

in India and I'm very curious to discover a bit about the country. Everybody is telling us to be careful with the food. In a way I'm a bit worried about my stomach, but at the same time butter chicken curry is my favourite food and I would love to have it where it comes from," he said. Legendary Michael Schumacher, who came out of retirement to join Mercedes, said, "For the next race, we are heading to India for the first time. A country which a lot of people tell me is fascinating. I'm looking forward to experiencing this new culture and seeing the track for the first time."

NEW DELHI, OctObEr 22 (PtI): Sachin Tendulkar is excited that the high-profile Formula One race is coming to the country with the inaugural Indian Grand Prix next week and said that he will support the Sahara Force India team. "I am excited about Indian Grand Prix F1 race. I will support the Force India team. I have friends like Michael Schumacher but I will support Force India because that is the Indian team and country comes first," Tendulkar said. Tendulkar, who is passionate about fast cars, has been invited by Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone himself to grace the Indian Grand Prix at Greater Noida on October 30. "I was passionate about cars from a young age. As I grew up, my passion for fast cars has grown," he said. On which car fascinated him as a child, he said "when I was young I saw these Fiat, Ambassador, at the most Contessa or Standard 2000. But my brother and others would discuss about Pala car." "So, the car I love to drive was Pala," he said. Tendulkar witnessed his first F1 Grand Prix at Silverstone in England while he was on the 2002 tour to England and met German legend Michael Schumacher the evening before the race day. In fact, it was Schumacher who presented him with the keys of the Ferrari car which Tendulkar sold to a businessman from Surat recently. Schumacher's teammate Nico Rosberg is too is excited to discover the Indian culture. "This will be my first visit to India, and it will be very exciting for me to discover the new culture. I am planning to spend a few days in the country and looking forward to doing some sightseeing, particularly making a visit to the Taj Mahal." Kobayashi's teammate Sergio Perez knows India as an emotional country. "I think the first Indian Grand Prix will be a very exciting event. I have some Indian friends and they keep telling me how emotional everybody is there about it. In any case, it is my goal to make the

most out of that race weekend and score points again." Former champion Lewis Hamilton from McLaren is confident India will embrace the motorsport despite cricket's dominance. "India's a sport-mad nation - mostly, it's about cricket, which is understandable because they're a very successful cricketing country, but I really think the people of India are going to take Formula One to their hearts. "The reception we've had in the last few years has been greater than I could ever have predicted and I think the whole country is ready for something new and something exciting," the British driver said.

LONDON, OctObEr 22 (AFP): Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes 90 minutes against one of the Premier League's more robust sides will convince the supporters of the worth of new signing Per Mertesacker. The Gunners host Stoke City on Sunday, with the fixture having been put back a day because of the Potters' Europa League commitments. Arsenal have often struggled against Tony Pulis' side and Wenger had previously complained on more than one occasion about the tactics employed by Stoke's more physical players. Germany defender Mertesacker, a deadline day signing from Werder Bremen, should be able to cope with that however as he is one of the tallest players in the Premier League. Yet Wenger insisted there was much more to the central defender's game than the ability to battle. "I brought him here for more than this type of game because I feel he is a good player," the Frenchman said. "He is a good organiser, he is an intelligent player and physically he is getting sharper and sharper in every game. "He had no real prepa-

ration for the season and now you can see we look less nervous at the back and he contributes to that." An injury to Carl Jenkinson at a time when first choice right back Bacary Sagna is already sidelined means Wenger will have to play a defender out of position against the Potters, with Johan Djourou likely to be moved across and Laurent Koscielny paired alongside Mertesacker. Arsenal have improved since a sticky start to the campaign and the 1-0 Champions League win at Marseille on Wednesday was their fifth victory in six games. "We feel we want to especially continue the quality of our game and the result will be the consequence of

that," Wenger added. "What is important is that we have a consistent focus and then we will come back." Stoke have not won at Arsenal since 1981 but were victorious in European competition themselves on Thursday when they beat Maccabi Tel-Aviv 3-0, a result which left them top of their group and still unbeaten after seven games into the continental competition this season. They are, however, bidding to avoid another European hangover in the Premier League with their two top flight defeats this term, at Swansea and Sunderland, having arrived on the back of midweek exertions in the Europa League. Pulis made it clear he was not happy that so far every Europa League fixture has been followed by a Premier League away trip. "What we've realised is that we have to cut the training down and do more strength and conditioning," he said. "The third game in the stretch is very difficult and to have every game away afterwards is tough. "To be the only club to stomach this is typical - if anyone was going to have it, it was Stoke."

Sachin Tendulkar is best player of spin, says Dean Jones MELbOUrNE, OctObEr 22 (ANI): Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar's is the best player of spin, with Javed Miandad and Brian Lara a close second, according to former Australian batsman Dean Jones. He further said that it is not easy to pick the best batsman I ever saw or played against, but it is easier is to pick the batsmen who played each shot the best. "Tendulkar's ability to move down the pitch or play the ball off the back foot while playing Shane Warne

on big turners was the best cricket entertainment anyone could wish for," he said. Jones, who is a specialist commentator and has played cricket for nearly 28 years, again picked Tendulkar as the best player of straight drive. Talking about best forward defence, he said Tony Dodemaide was the best followed by Sunil Gavaskar andTendulkar.JonessaidTendulkar's technique while defending the ball on back foot is quick, simple and perfect, but Steve Waugh is the best.

Jones termed Gavaskar as the best player of pace, and said: "Gavaskar played against all the great West Indians and hit many hundreds and averaged over 65. "Sunny never looked rushed and had an awesome defensive part to his game. He used the bowlers' pace very well and never hit a ball with violence. Allan Lamb also played the quicks very well," he added. He said that no one played a better pull shot than Viv Richards. "Viv was devastating in picking up the length and

powered it in front of square leg." When it comes to cover drive no one can the prowess of Virender Sehwag, who according to Jones is the most watchable batsman playing today. "Viru can hit it over the top or through the field. He has no conscience when he bats and plays the hardest stroke for any batsman with complete ease. No one ever hits it as sweet as Sehwag. Jamie Siddons was also an awesome player in this area," The Age quoted him, as saying.

Sangakkara, Jayawardene foil Pakistan in Test draw Veda FC lifted M. Noke Trophy

AbU DHAbI, OctObEr 22 (AgENcIEs): Kumar Sangakkara hit his eighth double hundred while Prasanna Jayawardene notched up a fighting century to salvage a draw for Sri Lanka in the first Test against Pakistan here today. Sangakkara scored 211 during a marathon near eleven-hour stay while Prasanna made 120, for his fourth century, as Sri Lanka piled on 483 to frustrate Pakistan on the fifth and final day at Abu Dhabi stadium. A cluster of wickets in the final session, with Umar Gul taking 4-64, left Pakistan with a target of 170 in a maximum 20 overs, but they called it quits on 21-1 after 10 overs. Sangakkara finally fell in the last over before tea, when he was trapped legbefore by the part-time leg-spinner Azhar Ali for his first wicket in Test cricket but not before he had frustrated Pakistan for almost two sessions. Sangakkara batted for Sri Lankan batsman Kumar Sangakara celebrates his century against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. (AP Photo) 651 minutes, faced 431 de-

liveries and hit 18 boundaries during an epic knock. With just 25 overs remaining and the match heading towards a draw, Prasanna fell caught behind off paceman Aizaz Cheema but by that time he and Sangakkara had changed the course of the match. Sangakkara flicked Cheema to fine-leg for his 18th boundary to reach his double hundred after 604 minutes of defiant batting, punching the air in delight. Together with Prasanna, Sangakkara added 201 for the sixth wicket stand, erasing the previous best of 169 in Pakistan-Sri Lanka Tests for this wicket between Kamran Akmal and Yasir Arafat at Karachi two years ago. Sangakkara, 33, has also achieved a personal landmark by scoring a double hundred as he is now third behind Sir Donald Bradman (12) and West Indian Brian Lara (nine) in terms of scoring Test double hundreds. "It was nice to bat under pressure and get us out of the hole," said a delight-

ed Sangakkara afterwards. "Prasanna batted equally well as he came out with the second new ball and batted brilliantly." Meanwhile, Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq praised Sri Lanka. "They are a good team and showed that wonderfully by their effort and full marks to Sangakkara and Prasanna, but we let down quite a few chances which we needed to improve upon," he said. Misbah tried every track in the book but the Sangakkara-Prasanna pair did not serve up any chances in the first three hours, and Prasanna reached his hundred with his 11th boundary, an uppish drive off spinner Saeed Ajmal. In all Prasanna hit 12 boundaries during his 273-ball knock. Resuming at 298-5 Sri Lanka survived the morning session unscathed as the overnight pair of Sangakkara and Prasanna kept Pakistan's three-pronged pace attack at bay to take their team to 364-5 at lunch.

such was the Camerons’ affection for their nanny that they phoned and asked for her to return for their sixyear-old son’s funeral. Mrs Lama’s family live Arubari, a remote village in the Kathmandu valley, where they have a £65,000 house paid for largely thanks to money she sends them. Her father Bhim Bahadur Lama told yesterday of her ‘deep and sentimental bond’ with Mr Cameron, his wife and their children Nancy, seven, Arthur Elwen, five, and one-year-old Florence. But he revealed that before she joined the Camerons, she was employed by a Muslim diplomat in London shortly after arriving in the capital 12 years ago. Mr Lama, 55, who runs a small shop from his two-storey home, said that while his daughter was not physically abused, she was not paid a salary and was given only lodging and food.

She left the job and contacted the London-based charity Kalayaan, with which the Camerons had advertised to find a nanny. ‘Thanks to her experience as a nanny and her good language skills, the Camerons hired her,’ said Mr Lama. Her brother Pemba Lama, 25, said: ‘The Cameron family . . . are very kind to her and if they had not treated her well, she would not have stayed there for as long as she has.’ Her mother Thuli Lama, 60, added: ‘She is very happy with the Camerons and we are very proud of our daughter.’ Mrs Lama, who has another brother and an older sister, is understood to have applied to stay in Britain permanently, but it is not clear what stage the process has reached. Five years ago she married hotel supervisor Pawan Lama, who is also from Nepal.

Series in grasp, India will aim to maintain stranglehold

India's captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni smiles during a practice session in Mumbai on Saturday, Oct. 22. The Indian team will play its fourth one-day international cricket match against England on Oct. 23. (AP Photo)

MuMbAI, OCtOber 22 (PtI): The series may be in their grasp, but India are unlikely to take their feet off the pedal when they take on a hapless England in the fourth ODI to push for a whitewash in the five-match ODI series on Sunday. Having outplayed England in the first three encounters, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his men have returned to the scene of India`s greatest triumph just over six months after sending the billonstrong nation to delirium by clinching cricket`s biggest prize -- the World Cup -- under lights at this revamped arena. Memories of that glorious April 2 night and the wild celebrations that followed might be distant for Dhoni especially after his squad was swamped by England at home in all three formats soon after that historic triumph. The 3-0 unassailable lead going into the penultimate clash on a wicket that is expected to be a slow turner may not be redemption, but it must have assuaged some bad feelings the Indian captain might have carried since his return home from the disastrous tour of England. What should be more pleasing to him and coach Duncan Fletcher is that the triumphant run in the current series has been achieved without the presence of several key members of the World Cupwinning squad, indicating the strong bench strength, albeit in home conditions. But Dhoni knows that a momentary easing of the pressure applied by his men

on England could be counter-productive. He would be keen to keep the winning momentum going to stay in the hunt for a memorable clean sweep, with the last game being scheduled at Kolkata on October 25. Team India has done everything right thus far and taken the insurmountable lead with the same eleven players turning out in the first three matches and the batting order too remaining constant. The home team has batted well, both while chasing the target or setting one, with skipper Dhoni himself taking up the challenge when the innings had gone into a slight wobble on occasions. Among the most pleasing aspects of the five-wicket victory in Mohali was the form shown by young opener Ajinkya Rahane -- the lone Mumbai representative in the squad in this series, who would be playing his first international encounter in front of his home supporters. The 20-year-old Rahane, who scored a man-of-the-match winning 91, and the fighting Parthiv Patel laid the platform for the challenging

(300 run target) chase with a stand of 79 that helped lay a good platform for Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja to finish off the match and seal the series triumph. With Gautam Gambhir also showing good form with a half century, the stiff target was reached with five wickets to spare. Add to this mixture, the explosive potentials of Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina and the batting in ideal conditions looks formidable. England bowlers have been largely clueless on how to tame the Indian batting line up on shirt-front wickets, unlike in the recent series back home when the shoe was on the other foot. They need to come out with something different if they have to make a match of it here. To add to their woes, pacer Chris Woakes has picked up an injury without playing a match in the series and has been replaced by Graham Onions in the squad. India too have lost young Vidarbha pacer Umesh Yadav, who has had a mixed series, following an injury in the previous game at Mohali on October 20. His replacement, Ban-

galore-based Abhimanyu Mithun, has played four Tests and a couple of ODIs in his short international career while his rival for the spot vacated by Yadav, has none. It`s a toss-up between him and greenhorn Varun Aaron for the third

seamer`s spot. The largely inexperienced Indian bowling attack has done enough to keep the English batsmen under the cosh. In slightly seam and swing friendly conditions the two Kumars – Praveen and Vinay - have

struck early blows. In conditions aiding some turn, the spin duo of left arm Jadeja and off break bowler R Ashwin have kept the run-scoring down to put the England middle-order under pressure to improve the run-rate.
