First phase of ‘anti-social awareness campaign’ takes off Morung Express news Dimapur | October 29

The headline above is enough to sum up the rationale behind Saturday’s start of the first phase of the public campaign against crime - chiefly kidnapping, A good preacher, huh? An outcome of the much publicised ‘public Yes no Others seminar’ of October 1 held to discuss and bring about a workable mechanism to address the burgeoning rate of anti-social activities in Dimapur, the rally received quite a positive response from the people, irrespecItanagar, OctOber 29 (PtI): At least 50 people were feared killed when a suspension bridge over the Kameng river collapsed at Seppa in East Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday evening. tive of communities. Led by the Dimapur Naga Council, Dimapur Chamber of Commerce & Industry and representatives from an array of civil societies, the rally traversed all the municipal wards of the town and beyond. Showing their solidarity towards the movement, public from the respective wards and localities lined important intersections and even decrepit alleyways, ready with messages put up on placards. Unlike other protest rallies, when people are coerced out of their homes to congregate at the town centre, this time the campaign is intended to be taken to individual homes, while creating awareness. The rally today did not totally shut down business. However, in a show of solidarity most of the businesses remained closed till noon. After a nearly four-hour long round trip across town,

the campaigners finally rendezvoused at the Dhobinullah junction where, a number of individuals were given the platform to voice their opinion towards the campaign and its understood objective. It was earlier flagged off from Nyamo Lotha Road, where the Dimapur Naga Council office is located. “This is a campaign which will go on till a semblance of normalcy is returned to Dimapur,” said Savi Liegise outlining the general objective of the movement. It is not an interim initiative and will be carried out phase-wise, he added. Stating that Dimapur has opportunities for all, he urged each and every individual to become responsible citizens to reverse the negative image of the town. “We’re only strengthening the hands of the police and the administration, voiced a senior citizen of the town while, choosing to clear doubts that some might have on the motive of the campaign. of the movement, he urged the people to voice out, leaving aside the ‘isms’ and negative competition in trade. Nagaland Medicine Dealers Association, represented by its general secretary maintained that the day’s show of unity must be for keeps and not merely a one off gesture. It would be of great help, if from today, the public comes forward without any hesitation to rescue a shopkeeper or any other trader in distress, the NMDA secretary dared. A leader of the Bengali community commented on the declining rate of business in Dimapur. This is because of the fear psychosis created as a result of the unchecked prevalence of extortion and kidnapping, particularly targeted at non-Naga businessmen and their families, the speaker said. “We (everyone) know what’s going on,” a representative from the Muslim community remarked. Only thing lacking is unity and the will to fight back, the speaker added. Continued on page 5

new DelhI, OctOber 29 (IanS): Congress president Sonia Gandhi will next week nominate a successor to outgoing Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Jarbom Gamlin who resigned from the post Friday night following a three-month leadership crisis in the north-eastern state. Gamlin tendered his resignation in Itanagar to Gen (retd) J.J. Singh, the Arunachal Pradesh governor who, however, has yet to take a decision in the matter, according to reliable sources. “The matter was discussed threadbare with Congress president Sonia Gandhi and she would name a new leader within the next two-three days,” Dhaniram Shandil, Congress in-charge for Arunachal Pradesh, said here Saturday.

DImaPur, OctOber 29 (mexn): In a rare, unusually unrestrained and brutally honest statement, Nagaland’s most senior politician SC Jamir today lashed out angrily at the corruption in the state’s Education department, calling it ‘hideous, fraud, phony, ugly’ and ‘diabolical’ and ‘monstrous.’ He called the corrupt teachers and personnel of the department ‘cheats’ and ‘charlatans’ as well. The former Governor of Goa and Maharashtra expressed deep resentment that while the world and In-

dia is marching farther, Nagaland and her people continue to “bury our heads” and appointing unqualified persons as “teachers” and ‘designers’ of the future of the younger generation of Nagas. In his speech during a students’ program at Pranabananda Women’s College October 29, in Dimapur, Jamir employed the allegory of the Ostrich’s natural instinct when faced with danger – burying its head in the sand – to describe the reaction of the people and the State to the corruption in the govern-

ment and its departments. The former Governor lamented the state of education in Nagaland and challenged all ‘concerned and enlightened’ citizens to make and take a stand. He said that the progressive and far-sighted initiatives of the United Progressive Alliance-government at the Centre, for Nagaland, are a stark contrast to what is happening in Nagaland today. He called ‘shameful’ the corruption and controversies in the Education department and the appointment of “bogus teachers.”

“Fully aware of the scam, nefarious attempts are being made by the Education department to illegally absorb these phony fraudsters through special interviews and the state Cabinet chooses to turn a Nelson’s eye towards thisdiabolicalandmonstrous game plan. Does it not reflect the ugly and despicable face of the government?” Jamir termed the appointment of bogus, unqualified persons as “teachers, in the School Education department as “hideous spectacle.” The former chief minister of Nagaland said the

country is experiencing a revolution in educational reforms and the states are competing in a healthy race to be the top in education. But, he said, “We in Nagaland are burying our heads in the ground and trying to appoint bogus, unqualified and undeserving persons as educators and designers of Nagaland’s future.” The shameful reality is that, he said, Naga children as future citizens of the state are being placed under the care and “guidance” of “cheats and charlatans.” Continued on page 5

Metallica fiasco: Organisers arrested, sent to jail

gurgaOn, OctOber 29 (IanS): Four people, including a top official of the company organising the Metallica concert here, were sent to six days’ police custody after being arrested early Saturday on charges of cheating and breach of trust, officials said. The administration has also seized the Rs 1 crore security money deposited by the firm. DNA Entertainment Networks, the event management company organising the concert, had on Friday cancelled the event at the last moment. Over 25,000 fans had gathered at the Leisure Valley Park here in Sector 29 to watch the concert, the opener for the ‘F1 Rocks’ series of performances for the Formula-1 race event at Greater Noida.

Upset over the cancellation, the fans had vandalised the stage and broke down barricades. Technical equipment, too, were destroyed as they threw chairs at the LED wall. Police registered a case against DNA Entertainment Networks on the complaint of Gurgaon-resident Chanderpal Yadav, who had paid Rs 1 lakh for 10 tickets. Rajesh Kumar, the general manager of DNA Networks, was arrested along with team members Umesh Chinara, Ashok Singh and Savio Faleiro, Gurgaon Sector 29 Station House Officer Jagdish Prasad said. They were arrested under Section 406 (breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code, Prasad said.

The four were presented in the court of magistrate Ashok Mann Saturday evening. Police had demanded 15 days’ custody for them, but the court agreed for six days’ remand. Deputy Commissioner Police (east) Maheshwar Dayal said: “Some more arrests may be possible.” “The tickets for the show were priced at Rs.10,000 (first class), Rs.2,750 and Rs.1,750. The fans had come from many cities and also countries like Bangladesh, China, Nepal, Indonesia and Singapore. “Although there was no sitting arrangement at the venue, people were charged for first, second and third class, out of an estimated 30,000 tickets sold. More than 8,000 tickets were sold for

the first class itself, which means they cheated fans of more than Rs.8 crore,” Dayal added. Meanwhile, the district administration has begun the process to blacklist the company. Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Magistrate P C Meena said: “We have served notice to DNA Entertainment to provide us a detailed payment refund plan in three days. We have also seized Rs 1 crore, the corporate guarantee money deposited by the company.” The four-member American band, among the most famous heavy metal bands in the world, was to Friday stage its first ever performance in India. Metallica is slated to perform in Bangalore on Sunday.

3 KMHR Appeal for immediate lifting of Economic Blockade Dimapur, OctOber 29, (mexN): The Kuki Movement for Human Rights(KMHR) stated that the two months Sadar Hills District economic Blockade is not at all official, but called by people who had the agenda of the disintegration of Manipur State Territory. It also stated that there is no document which can supersede the existing boundary Act in practice and so the unlawful claim of certain areas for a community or party is the outcome of State disintegration movement. The press note written by Kuki Movement for Human Rights Pu T. Lunkim, Chairman, stated that, there is no area exclusively and communally to be claimed by a single community or party. It was pointed out that all

the areas made Manipur state territory, which includes the present formation of the “Re-organization Committee” for redemarcation of the existing three decades old district boundaries, with the objective of taking certain areas out from the existing Sadar Hills District and add those areas to the adjoining Districts. The press note questioned whether or not the Committee knows that Sadar Hills District is also in Manipur. While referring to the article of member of Parliament Rishang Keishing published by the Sangai Express September 5 2011 the Kuki movement for human rights stated that, to do so is tantamount to defying both State recommendation of the District boundaries and the Parliament

approval of the same in 1971. It was also pointed out that this had been in practice for the last three decades, and on the very basis of this existing boundaries District Council election has been democratically conducted recently. It was further added that the Sadar Hills District Council had been functioning on equal footing with the other five Hill Districts having all the infrastructures as the other Hill Districts, except without a Deputy Commissioner. They also inculpated the Naga Integration, Southern Nagaland, greater Nagaland, “Alternative Arrangement,” for the upheaval and pointed out that in Manipur, Meitei, Kuki and Nagas are indigenous inhabitants, plus some recent immigrants. Dimapur, OctOber 29 (mexN): Former Governor SC Jamir today said founding Naga fathers envisioned a democratic, progressive and modern Naga people and land. But today the state and her people have been suppressed and are oppressed by the gun “culture” and ‘gun-toting elements.’ Only noble-thinking and people-conscious citizens can save Nagaland, Jamir reminded. He reminded of a truth: ‘Damocles’ Sword of fear psychosis’ perpetually hanging over the minds and souls of the Naga citizens by the ‘quixotic gun-dotting elements’ have completely devastated even inborn Naga courage and bravery.

Population Meitei is the biggest, Kuki is second and Naga is third. All the three live together, own the land together and though in some areas one community lived in larger number but still those areas are not their own exclusively. Accordingly the then State Government had Hill District boundaries made carefully for social harmony and peace, following the recommendation approved by Parliament which has been smoothly in practice up to date. It was stated that the solution is very simple and easy. That is to post a Deputy Commissioner at Kangpokpi Sadar Hills District Council Office, and immediately lift all the blockades. The Human rights movement asserted that if that is not done, then it would be

logical to take that the Economic Blockade was caused by the State Government in disobedience of the then State recommendation and had also defied the Parliamentary Act of 1971. The Kuki movement for human rights therefore appealed to both the State Government and the Central Government of India for a Deputy Commissioner to be posted immediately at Kangpokpi at Sadar Hills District as had been done for other five Hill Districts without altering the existing boundaries. It was also mentioned that by exercising the Law placed in its hand the state government can prevent communal tension and thereby restore peace and social harmony that prevailed throughout the ages.

“In contrast, the Naga society is still floundering in doldrums and the minds of the people are plagued by confusion and dilemma. The present situation in Nagaland is akin to what Matthew Arnold astutely remarked: ‘we are wandering between two worlds: one dead, the other unable

to be born.’” Jamir said. “This is primarily the result of land and protracted years of violence, suppressions and oppressions under a senseless and misguided gun culture.” Only God and faith in Him can redeem the people, and save the ‘mortally wounded’ and ‘hapless’ state and her people, the former Nagaland chief minister told the gathering. The Congress leader queried who the ones to redeem the Nagas would be. “Obviously the need of the hour is enlightened, dedicated, well-meaning, freethinking and noble-spirited citizens,” he said. “Naga society is mortally wounded and she remains completely helpless.”

BSNL plans to trim landline operations Dealers want State govts to set up special auto zones

KOLKata, OctOber 29 (ageNcies): State-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) plans to sharply scale down the manpower strength of its beleaguered landline business, which accounts for nearly 65% of its 2.77 lakh-strong workforce, in one of the boldest moves to transform the loss-making telco into a nimble, profit-making organisation. “Poor revenues coupled with a steep reduction in the number of landline connections over the past three years from some 34 million to under 25 million has made a sizeable number of positions and functions in the consumer fixed access (CFA) division redundant. A review of the

manpower requirement is underway, but we are yet to take a call on which positions to retain and which to abolish,” a top company executive with direct knowledge of the development told ET. At present, BSNL is doing an internal assessment of whether its lossmaking landline business justifies the existence of innumerable phone mechanics, telecom technical assistants, regular mazdoors and junior telecom officers who collectively number more than a whopping 1.5 lakh on its rolls. The number of staff functions in the CFA business is directly linked to the number of active landlines.

Maruti Suzuki faces 2-4 per cent cancellation of ‘Swift’ orders at Manesar due to the strikes. The petrol Swift has a waiting period of about 22-24 weeks, while the diesel version currently has waiting period of about 24-26 weeks,” an executive at a Delhi-based dealership said on the condition of anonymity. He said for the last 1-2 months, no Swift model has been delivered by the company to the showroom. “Because of the long waiting period, many people are cancelling their bookings. In our showroom, 2-4 per cent people have cancelled their Swift bookings and shifted to other models like Ritz. Some people have even moved to other car makers,” the executive said. Expressing similar experience, a Guwahati-based dealer said his outlet has seen 1-2 per cent of the people changing their decision from Swift to other compact cars such as Toy-

NeW DeLHi, OctOber 29 (pti): Maruti Suzuki is feeling the pinch of labour strikes, with about 2-4 per cent of the prospective customers of one of its successful models, Swift, deciding to cancel orders due to the long waiting period. Alarmingly for the firm, dealers said, is the fact that around half the customers who cancelled orders have opted for rival brands such as Toyota Liva and Volkswagen Polo. The new model of Swift, one of the top selling cars from Maruti Suzuki India (MSI), was launched in August. The firm has about one lakh undelivered booking orders of Swift. Depending on petrol and diesel options, and geographical locations, buyers are waiting for 2-7 months to own a Swift. “There is a huge waiting period for the Swift, mainly because of the impact on production

ota’s Liva and Volkswagen’s Polo. “Another 1-2 per cent of the buyers shifted to the Ritz,” the dealer said, adding that Swift was having waiting period of about 3 months for both petrol and diesel engine options. When contacted, MSI Managing Executive Officer (Marketing and Sales) Mayank Pareek accepted that some people had cancelled their bookings while favouring other models. “...but this percentage is very small. A total of about 2 per cent people may have cancelled their bookings in favour of other models, including those of Maruti’s. We are delighted that even in the times of such situations, customers are staying with us,” he added. Pareek said MSI currently has about 1 lakh un-

del i v e r e d Swift orders, and the car is having waiting periods of about 2 months for petrol version, while it is 4-5 months for a diesel variant. This year MSI had witnessed three instances of labour unrests at its Manesar plant, which mainly produces the Swift.

to decongest city dealerships and improve customer service. Speaking at Hyderabad InternationalAutoShowbeinghostedatHICC here, Sanghi said that the country’s automotive sector which now faces a toughbusinessenvironmentislikelyto see the slow growth phase to continue for another 12-18 months. However, he felt that the Indian automotive market is still amongst the fastest growing globally. If economic growth tops 7-8 per cent per annum, we are confident that the country’s automotive market, whichispredominantlysmall-cardriven, will also grow, Sanghi said.

Higher expectations He said that the customers’ expectations are going up, pushing manufacturers to innovate and offer products that meet their expectations. After a robust growth for couple of years, the automotive market has been passing through a tough phase due to general economic slowdown, high inflation and high interest rates. With over 70% car buyers taking the loan route, the high interest rates are hurting, he felt. Given the current business environment, including high interest rate regime, the automotive sector may not see much growth, he said.

Hackers go after Facebook sites 600,000 times every day

LONDON, OctOber 29 (pti): Hackers target hundreds of thousands of ‘Facebook’ accounts nearly 600,000 times daily, the popular social networking website has revealed. ’Facebook’ is the largest social networking site in the world with more than 800 million members who spend more than a total of 700 billion minutes on the site per month. Out of more than a billion logins to the website every 24 hours, 600,000 are impostors attempting to access users’ messages, photos and other personal information, according to ’Facebook’ The figure was revealed as part of a ‘Facebook’ blog post announcing a couple of new security measures being implemented across the site over the coming weeks to tackle these sorts of breaches, ‘The Daily Telegraph’ reported. Security experts have said the

figure is a “big concern” and that people need to be more careful when choosing their passwords and responding to offers supposedly from friends on ’Facebook’ Graham Cluley, a senior technology consultant at Sophos, a computer security organisation, said: “When a Facebook login is compromised, it means that someone else, the hacker, has taken control of that account. “When a hacker takes over a user’s Facebook account, they can post images, send messages and access all of that person’s private information in one fail swoop. Facebook has had a lot of security issues which it is now trying to address.” He also warned that growing numbers of teenagers are hacking into the Facebook accounts of their school rivals in order to post malicious messages and photos on their behalf. Facebook has declined to comment.

As summoned, the Watsü Mungdang attended the Federal Assembly but without proper deliberation, the President of Ao Senden started to read out their already resolved decision to suspend the Watsü Mungdang, on which the Watsü Mungdang staged a Walk-Out in protest of their decision.

Jamir lashes out at ‘fraudsters’ in State’s ... Jamir lamented that quality and talent is being sacrificed at the “altar” of political expediency. SC Jamir had these words for the right-thinking Naga citizens: “If we ignore the sage advice of the great swami – education is man-making with a view to nation-building, and sacrifice quality and talent at the altar of political expediency, we shall be doing the greatest disservice to the future of Nagaland.” “I strongly feel that it is high time that the concerned and enlightened citizens of Naga society take up the cudgels to prevent the wanton destruction of the educational system in the state and mobilize their fellow compatriots and Naga brethren into a solid bulwark against any such malicious attempt. This is perhaps one of the most important challenges staring at the Naga people today,” he added.

Dimapur police rescue kidnapped visitor According to the statement of Ahmed, he met Kasim onboard a Dimapur-bound Intercity Express on the day of the kidnapping. The latter had boarded the train at Lumding, he said. New to Dimapur, Ahmed was befriended by Kasim. After reaching Dimapur at around 6:00 pm, Kasim suggested that they have their meals at a hotel in New Market. However, Kasim had another plan. While eating, Kasim called up Achumi informing that their ‘prey’ was ready. Achumi promptly responded by informing Assumi of the plan and enlisted the other two. The four came to the location as specified by Kasim in a Maruti car (AS 23C 4519) and whisked Ahmed away. They then took him to ‘Mian Bazaar’ at Khushibill, police said. The kidnappers also snatched the wallet of the victim and further withdrew Rs. 14, 765 from Ahmed’s bank account using his ATM card. They then called up Ahmed’s brother demanding a sum of Rs. one lakh for his release. During the whole duration of the confinement, the victim was kept blindfolded with hand and feet bound and assaulted. However, police got wind of the kidnapping before the ransom was paid. Ahmed was rescued in the afternoon today from near the Diary Farm in Burma Camp.

Courage in Journalism

Tabby Biddle

(Writer/Reporter dedicated to the empowerment of women & girls)

O

n Monday night in Los Angeles, the International Women's Media Foundation will honor four brave women journalists who have risked their lives to cover news in their countries. “These courageous women have endured terrible hardships, without questioning their own safety,” said IWMF Board CoChair Barbara Cochran. “We are honored to tell the world their stories.” What follows is my interview with Parisa Hafezi, bureau chief for Reuters in Iran, who is being honored for her courage to report on the violent protests in Iran after the 2009 election. After the election, riot police armed with electric batons attacked Parisa as she struggled to cover the bloodshed and chaos on the streets of Tehran. “We had to be strong and take the risks to report the stories,” says Parisa. Parisa has endured beatings, interrogations, harrassment and raids on her office and home to cover the the opposition movement against the Iranian regime. Despite the hazards that have threatened her life and the life of her family, she has fought efforts to censor reporting and has battled against tough restrictions on women in the media. While many local and foreign journalists fled the country after the disputed 2009 elections, Parisa stayed. Today Parisa Hafezi is the only female and only non-Western Reuters bureau chief in the Middle East. Tabby Biddle: You have endured violent attacks, beatings, harassment, interrogations and detainment to report the news in your country. What inspires you to keep enduring these hardships? Parisa Hafezi: As a woman, I think I have a part in this fight and I shall continue it for the future of my daughters. I want to pave the ground for them, for their future. Also, I'm doing my job. I'm a reporter, and I have to continue reporting no matter what the dangers are because these are a part of my job. TB: You are the only female and the only non-Western Reuters bureau chief in the Middle East. What does this mean to you and what do you think it means to other women in the Middle East? PH: After I got the position, I received many messages from my female colleagues in the region that said, “Now it shows that we can do this too. We will work harder. We will continue this path to pave the ground.” I think it shows that if we work hard and we fight correctly, we can achieve there. We

can become one of the decision makers. We can run a bureau in an Islamic male-dominated country. It shows that in a bureau in which all of your colleagues are men, you can get the respect. You can show them that a woman can do the job. I think this is good because it shows my girls and other female journalists working for Iranian media that they can do it. The fact that you are a woman doesn't mean that you are weaker. It doesn't mean that you can't be a manager. It doesn't mean that you can't work like others. I'm not saying like a man, because I have never compared myself to a man.

TB: As I understand it, there are tough restrictions on women in the media in Iran. What have you noticed and experienced as the differences between what male journalists and female journalists face in their jobs? PH: In Iran we have many female journalists working for Iranian media, and they are very good. They are young, very enthusiastic, very motivated. But the problem is... let's just start with shaking hands. When you see someone, the first thing that you do is shake hands to establish contact. As a woman, you cannot do that in Iran. It's forbidden. And then when you're meeting with an official, you have to take care of your head scarf because if anything happens, you will lose your press card. So, these are the basic things. But there are other issues that are more important. When our office was raided after the 2009 election, these people came into the office and said: “Whose in charge?” Everyone in the office said: “She is.” They looked at me and said: “You're the bureau chief?” It was kind of a humiliation, but it's funny at the same time. You have to work double to show them that you exist. And you have to work harder to show that you are a good journalist. We are in a country where your husband can ban you from leaving the house or from leaving the country. So imagine if you are a journalist and you have to travel to cover stories, and your husband bans you from leaving the country. Also, as a woman, you think about rape. Men journalists never think about that, or think about it less than I do. So these are the issues that hinder our work.

who wanted a journalist for a Turkish news agency. I speak Turkish, so I started as a journalist there. I had no clue about politics, or about newspapers. I didn't know why people read newspapers. Then in two years time, I really loved my job. TB: Have you ever thought of leaving or backing down with all that you have endured? Has that thought ever crossed your mind? PH: Never, ever. I love my job. I'm creating a difference. I'm doing something. As a female journalist in my country, it feels good that I can help young, less experienced journalists. This is the thing that I didn't have years ago when I became a journalist. It feels good to help them. My mom sometimes says, “Find yourself another job. Think about your kids.” I think first of all I don't know any other job... I can't do any other job. Secondly, despite all the pressures and the difficulty, not only from the Iranian government but from my male colleagues, I love my job.

TB: The voices of women and girls are so needed around the world. What advice would you offer young women to encourage them to speak up and speak out about what they believe in -- whether as journalists or just as everyday citizens? PH: Based on my own experience, I think that first of all they should become independent financially. Then they should choose a job that they like, and do it perfectly. Never ever should they compare themselves with men. They should try to improve their own skills. It's kind of to show that whatever a woman does, there's good in it and she can do it properly. Never should they be afraid of speaking loud. I was in a situation years ago where I was under pressure and I was scared to talk about it. I was scared because of the culture, because of the environment, my family, my own perceptions, and I never talked about it. But later on I was fed up and I got divorced. I was thinking, “Why didn't I talk about it? It helps women. It could prevent someone from falling in the same trap, and making the same mistake.” It's the only thing that I regret. TB: I can't stop thinking about your office being under constant surveillance and the fact that you've experienced several break-ins, and staffers are convinced that e-mails and telephone lines are bugged. What is it like living like this? PH: It's difficult because we don't have privacy. But after awhile you kind of become numb and you get used to it. No matter what they think about you -- that you are a spy, or whatever -- you know that you are not. I know that I am doing my job. I'm not a spy. I'm not a political activist. I'm just doing my job. Then you become relaxed. You think, “Okay, whoever wants to listen, let them listen. Let them watch me. Let them control my telephones, my house, whatever. I'm not doing anything wrong.”

TB: What initially drew you to being a journalist? PH: I didn't decide to become a journalist. I am an engineer. I went back to Iran after finishing my university and I looked for a job in my own field as an engineer. But I couldn't find one. They told me that I could be a secretary in one of the factories. I said, “No thank TB: How many daughters do you have? you. I want to work in my own field.” PH: I have two daughters. One is 16 and one A friend of my parents knew someone is 12. I wish they could be here with me, but TB: What does it mean to you to receive

TB: What kind of road ahead do you see for women and girls in Iran in terms of their personal empowerment, independence, and voice in their everyday lives? PH: The life of women in Iran is not like what many people see from the outside. Sixty percent of university students are women. More and more they are working. We now have a working class of women, which we didn't have before the revolution. They learned after the revolution that they should become independent -- financially and culturally. Now they feel that they are equal to men, and sometimes they are even more powerful. While there are some laws regarding women where there is discrimination, it doesn't mean that all men are using them. It's a cultural issue. But because there is a lack of legal support for women, it's obvious that women have to become independent, and more powerful because through that they can confront the law. They can also fight against men who want to pressure them. TB: If you had a loudspeaker that could be heard by all women and girls in the Middle East, what message would you want to impart? PH: Believe in yourself. Don't compare yourself to men. You are a human being, and you have rights. Never yield to pressure. That is my message. KBC’s rags to riches story: the man who won Rs 5 crore

irst the news. A computer operator Sushil Kumar working earning Rupees Six Thousand per month from MNREGA office near Motihari, Bihar has won the biggest ever television show’s prize money of Rupees Five Crore. The world would be watching the show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ or KBC 5 on the 2nd of November hosted by the Superstar Amitabh Bachchan. Though everybody is talking about the determination of Sushil but he was a very poor student and could not pass his matriculation exams in his first attempt. Aged 27-year and having a postgraduate degree in psychology Sushil needed to answer correctly thirteen questions in all. Thirteen questions with a few help lines like phone a friend, audience, expert and fifty-fifty it is really not such a big deal. Getting a call for the show is all important which is purely dependent on your luck and the number of sms and phone calls. This show leaves innumerable people agitated as they never get a call even after so many attempts. The world knew it days before the show’s scheduled telecast though the show was originally recorded on the 25th of October. The world knew it early because the tv channel telecasting it, the Sony Entertainment Telvision’ has great stake in it though it did not want the Jackpot question to be disclosed which is related to Andaman and Nikobar islands. If the media glitz is put aside public in general ask questions the usefulness of such programmes. Yes, for entertainment it is good. The host is unparallel. The script is tremendous. But no one is sure about participating in it as it takes innumerable sms and phone calls as only a handful is invited. Amitabh Bachchan and Five Crore Rupees is such a big thing that anybody would pause a while before making any comments but the fact remains that such shows are not as simple as Sushil Kumar is. Harshwardhan Navathe of Mumbai was the first participant to return home as a crorepati. Interestingly when the show was added a Rupees Five Crore Jackpot question, Rahat Taslim of Giridih, Jharkhand quit after winning Rupees One crore in 2010. This show also reminds the much talked about film

ushil Kumar, the first person to win Rs 5 crore on KBC till date, remembers how he didn't have TV when KBC started and used to sneak into his neighbour's house to catch the show. 27-year-old Sushil Kumar from Motihari district of Bihar is the first claimant of Rs 5 crore prize money on the popular game show Kaun Banega Crorepati. The humble guy, who worked as a computer operator in government's Mahatma Gandhi Scheme before he appeared on the show, admits that he had never imagined he would reach the final question on KBC. “I used to test my knowledge by mockplaying KBC while watching it on TV and would usually answer questions till around Rs 25 lakhs to maximum Rs 50 lakhs on my own merit. So when on the show, I assumed to win not beyond that amount”, says Sushil. Like most television viewers, even Sushil Kumar has been an avid fan of Kaun Banega Crorepati since 11 years. “In fact when KBC started, I didn't have TV at my home so I would often watch the show at my neighbour's house. The city roads used to literally go blank when KBC was aired on TV”. Since Sushil never imagined he would win this kind of amount, he is still clueless on what he would be doing with the entire prize money. “I have no idea. The only thing I am certain about is that I will quit my current job and relocate to Delhi where I shall pursue my studies for IAS”. His knowledge of competitive exams helped him considerably in playing the game so well. “KBC has a balanced mix of questions on current affairs and general

‘Slumdog Millionaire’. Mr. Amitabh says that if a person is determined to achieve something he could easily do that as Sushil Kumar coming from a very humble background has done it. But the question that Amitabh does not answer is that why only a few have achieved that? In a country of over a billion people KBC could not produce more than a few winners of Rupees One crore or more? Why so many people are not able to get even a chance to get to the initial level? For many Five Crore Rupees is not an in-

Based on the UK game show ‘Who Wants to be A Millionaire’ the KBC show was first aired in the year 2000 hosted by Amitabh Bacchan. Apart from providing entertainment to the viewers and big money to the participants, it boosted the TRP of Stat Television then. In 2001 there were KBC Junior and KBC Jodi but those could not be very popular. After four years the show had its second edition as KBC Dwitiya doubling the prize money to Rupees two crore As Amitabh Bachchan fell ill, Star Television

spiration, it is just Five Crore Daydreams. Reportedly this show is being watched by around five million people but only a few have won Rupees One Crore or more. Interestingly the celebrity participants like Aamir Khan, Shahrukh Khan and Joh Abrahm etc. always return big winning amount while common participant very rarely go above a lakh. But more than the prize money it is the prime time advertisement and sms charges which contribute to the immense profit of the tv channel telecasting it.

knowledge. So I used to keep myself updated with magazine and newspapers”. It's certainly not an accidental win for Sushil Kumar who had two lifelines ('phone a friend' and 'double dip') unused at the 5 crore question. “Though I had a fair idea of the answer to the final question (since I had read about it while preparing for my exams), when it's a question of Rs 5 crores, you start doubting yourself. So I used both my lifelines and came clear”, smiles Sushil. Ask him what was his reaction on winning and Sushil says, “I was so excited that I started shouting and my happiness knew no bounds. In fact I was so overwhelmed at that moment that I can't clearly remember what I did”. Like any other contestant, Sushil holds host Amitabh Bachchan in high regards. “Anyone who has keenly followed KBC would vouch for the fact that Amitabh Bachchan treats every contestant with the same respect and dignity, irrespective of their social or economical backgrounds. He inspires and encourages everyone without any kind of discrimination. He treated me with the same level of love and respect and when I won 5 crores, he hugged me like an elder brother”. Finally does he see the attitude of society changing towards him with his historic win? “I am sensing that. People who never used to give me a second glance are now claiming, back in my hometown, that they are my best friends. They are giving interviews in newspapers of how well they know me. Certainly life has changed”, says Sushil who is having the last laugh. (Source: The Times of India)

hired the Badshah of Bollywood Mr. Shahrukh Khan as the host of KBC3 while the prize money remained Rupees Two Crore. This show was not considered as big hit as it was during when Amibath Bachchan was the host. The sponsors Air Tel, Unit Trust of India and ITC ltd. were reported not to be very keen on continuing this show. So, the show ended in just three months. It again started as KBC 4 with its original host Mr. Amitabh Bachchan in 2010 but the prize money was added with a jackpot of Rupees Five crore.

The theme of the camp is ‘Born to bear fruit’ taken out from the book of John 15:16. It is extremely challenging to see young Nagas setting aside their tight schedules and giving top priority to attend the evangelical youth camp organized by DLCF. The camp was started on October 27 and will be concluded on October 30. The campers are very fortunate to get exposed to some of the best speakers who have varied specializations to nurture them with a strong biblical foundation. The resource persons are, Rev. This camp is of a very different kind where the campers are exposed to more interactive session rather than just sitting and listening to sermons. In this regards, the camp coordinators Russell humtsoe and Elans Ngullie have been encouraging the campers to come forward and interact with the resource persons who are not only theologically sound but also academically sound. The camp venue is YWAM Centre, Greater Noida which is having all the modern facilities to conduct events like youth camp and other training programmes. Another attraction of the camp venue is the coffee bar at the basement occupying a huge space where they offer excellent hot and cold coffees. The campers are having a meaningful time by learning and sharing the word of God with one another.

One girl with a passion for hairstyling is using her talent to not only make people look good, but tell them something they may never have heard before.

A

shley Lamason, from the US, was in Moldova for two months to take part in outreach with Operation Mobilisation. It was there that she decided to try out the novel idea of combining her lifelong love of hairstyling with helping others to find God. “When you go to the hair salon, you end up talking to the hairdresser for about 30 minutes,” she explains. “So I wondered if I could spend that half an hour talking to people about Jesus?” In the two months she was there, the trained beautician gave over 250 haircuts, using these as an opportunity to share her faith. And despite some obstacles - like the language barrier - her efforts paid off. “I hadn’t heard of anyone else doing hairdressing as missionary work, so I was unsure what to expect when I got there. It was definitely challenging and the conditions were completely different from working in a salon - my back hurt a lot because the chairs were so low! “But nevertheless, people came and were thankful they could get a haircut. Maybe some of them wouldn’t have been able to afford one otherwise, so I was glad to serve them in some small way,” she reports. “When the language barrier made it hard for me to witness, the other OM team members I was with shared the Gospel with those waiting in line – when you are the only hairdresser, people generally need to wait a little! “On one occasion I gave three sisters haircuts. One of them was so fussy that her sister heard the Gospel and accepted Christ into her life before I was done!” Lamason used her skills during evangelistic holiday camps for Moldova’s children and through OM’s Bus4life ministry which makes Christian literature available to remote East European communities. “I’m hoping to come back to Moldova for a longer time,” she says about her future plans. “My vision is to open a hair salon where people can have haircuts, drink tea and browse the Bible.” (Source: Christiantoday)

hey say that once upon a time, there lived a man who wanted to achieve everything he was capable of achieving. He was obsessed with this desire. He ate, slept, and walked with one and only dream: to die, having accomplished every single thing he was able to accomplish. There were so many things he could do. He felt like the whole world could be his, if he only set his mind to it. At times, he was even horrified by the powers hiding in his mind and heart. He was certain—in fact—he knew that his potential had no limits. He knew that he could accumulate power that would dwarf the power of ancient kings; he knew that he could write books that would shake the minds of generations to come; he knew that he could invent things that would forever change the lives of millions of people. He lived, constantly feeling the power within— and that power knew no bounds. There was only one obstacle: having such a potential, but only one life, he had to make a choice. He had to decide where to apply all of his enormous abilities. Making that decision was extremely hard, for any choice meant cutting off some future achievements. And so in the meantime, he went to school, graduated, found a respectable well-paid job, married, and bred children. And he spent every minute of his spare time trying to decide where he should apply all his might. Even though he was not interested in applying it to his work, his power was impossible to hide. He was successful in everything he touched, and he earned great respect of the people who worked with him. And all the while, he thought to himself: Imagine what I would achieve once I concentrate entirely on the area of my choice. Time went by, and he grew older. Some roads he used to dream about became closed to him. But there was still so much he could accomplish. And he kept thinking hard while working, raising children, dealing with everyday problems, and knowing that his potential had no limits. And

most people who knew him were of the same opinion, for it was impossible not to realize this, being around him for a while. One day, a sudden chest pain made him come home early. He dragged his feet to the bathroom. There, feeling weak and empty, he looked in the mirror. A worn-out, grayhaired man stared back at him. But his eyes, though red and tired, were still full of unrealized potential. He peered into these eyes and, all of a sudden, realized one simple truth. The next moment, the pain pierced his heart again, and it stopped beating forever. Everybody cried, even those who knew him only slightly. The pain of this loss was staggering. Not only had he been a good man but they also knew what great potential had died with him. True, he had spent his life trying to make the choice, but imagine what would’ve happened had he made it. After all, he was so close to making it, and he hadn’t been that old. He could not have had this feeling of unlimited potential for nothing. His potential was truly unlimited. The choice was about to be made, and very soon he could have achieved anything. His life could have become a shining monument, which would have forever inspired future generations. What a loss! What a tragedy! They cried and cried and cried. And they didn’t know what he had realized the moment before he died. The truth that came upon him was rather simple. People only flatter themselves by thinking that they could have achieved this or that if not for such-and-such circumstances. Yet this is nothing but delusion. At any given moment, as long as you’ve been healthy and haven’t been thrown into the midst of war, crime or forces of nature, you always achieve everything you can. You simply lack something that is necessary for achieving that goal you’ve never reached—a talent, a skill, willpower, a set of priorities, or something else. Like it or not, realize it or not, believe it or not, but you simply lack it. You just think you’ve got what it takes, and only these insurmountable difficulties have prevented you from reaching the ultimate heights. But in reality, what you don’t achieve is something you’re not capable of achieving.

y son is as smart as they come, which in most ways is wonderful. But as I dialed the Poison Control Hotline in hysterical tears for the third time in six months because it seems my son can out-smart any childproofing device, I realized I am overwhelmed. Thankfully, it turned out to be fine. However, as I cried to the calm voice on the other end of the call, I couldn’t help but feel exasperated by my life. The responder was sympathetic. She told me these things happen all of the time and reassured me that most toddlers are apt to explore dangerous places. She encouraged me not to feel guilty or upset. Still, I could not stop weeping. I was emotional because I was scared about the situation, but also crying by the grace this woman gave me through her kind and timely words. Being a parent is definitely not easy. It’s a job that requires constant focus amongst many distractions. When I was pregnant with my first child, I envisioned the beautiful dresses, the matching shoes and tights, and a perfect baby. I saw myself running the perfect household. Now, I am lucky to find two shoes of the same color and size, and if my children’s faces are free of smudges, it means they just woke up or had a bath. We often beat ourselves up about our failures as moms and dads. We set our own expectations of what we should be doing. But, as with anything in life, there should be room for mistakes. My own father said something to me that I sometimes say it in the midst of a chaotic day, “God does not expect you to be perfect.” We can never be perfect parents. We should try our best and do what we feel is right for our children using God’s guidance, but we must accept the fact that there will be days when our house is a mess and our children run circles around us. It is important as moms and dads to learn to find ways to cope with a bad day. Often, we feel guilty if we need a break. God knows we need rest. He wants us to feel refreshed; stress is not a necessity in parenting. On those days when you can barely hear yourself think and your world seems to be falling apart around you, know that these feelings are not unique to you alone. We all go through this. Raising a child is a learning process. We learn from triumphs and trials. Your children will test your patience and your strength. Just do not all your fears and challenges besiege you. Just as God does not expect perfection from us, we should not expect perfection from our children or ourselves. When you feel like you have had enough, do not lose faith. You have God by your side and in your heart to help you. Take time for yourself. As a young mother, I would often feel like it was wrong for me to even spend a minute away from my children because I was neglecting time I could be spending with them. I would let the guilt travel with me to the store or even if I just wanted to take a shower. I could not separate myself from the feeling that I should be there all of the time. I came to realize that me on edge and overwhelmed does not benefit my children anymore than it does me. Having alone time can curb that feeling. Nurture friendships. It does not make you a bad mom to need a couple of hours to get out once in awhile. Build your relationship with other moms. They need encouragement and adult conversation just as much as you do. Take time to develop your relationship with the Lord. Go to church groups or spend some quiet time reading Scripture and praying. This will not only build your spiritual relationship, but also offer you a peace that you cannot find anywhere else. Being a parent is a blessing that comes with so much love and happiness. Having a bad day does not mean that you are doing something wrong. We all have those moments that weigh us down. Trust in God for the strength and patience you need. Our Heavenly Father has us in His hands at all times. Give yourself a break as a parent and love your children on the good and bad days, just as God loves us through it all. Transforming the lives of street boys in Ethiopia

Bible Society

T

he Bible is being used to transform the lives of thousands of boys rescued from the streets in Ethiopia. The Lighthouse Boys Home has helped some 6,000 boys since it opened 13 years ago. Bible Society gives the home copies of the Bible as books and in audio. So along with food, shelter and training they also get to listen to, read and study the Bible – something the home’s Director says has transformed hundreds of lives. This Bible Sunday - today churchgoers will hear about the story of one boy from the home who says his life has been totally changed by the Bible.

He is featured in this year’s Bible Sunday resource pack – a range of worship resources designed to encourage churches to think about how the Bible is re-energising people today and changing lives and nations. Tesfaye, 17, was electrocuted after sleeping in an electricity sub station to try and stay warm. He was taken to hospital after he was found lying at the side of the road. He had been so badly burnt he was there for six months before he was taken to the Lighthouse Home where he started listening to the Bible. Tesfaye says, “The worst thing about being on the street is that people get hurt. It is wet and cold. It’s so difficult to live on the streets. My life has been changed totally.

“God has a plan for me. I’m trusting in him now. I don’t know what’s going to happen to me, but I believe that God has a plan.” The Lighthouse Home’s Director Kashun Tesfaye, 30, says, “There are many problems for boys on the streets. If the weather is cold they drink oil from cars to keep warm. They go hungry. They end up eating garbage. They don’t use clean water or drink clean water. “The Bible gives these young people hope for the future. I believe that’s because the Bible gives hope to all people. The children are able to understand the word of God and get hope in God.” The Bible Sunday theme this year, Celebrating The People’s Bible, Today Yesterday and To-

morrow is based on Nehemiah 8. It’s a key moment in the history of Israel. In the midst of a period of huge change – the walls of Jerusalem had been rebuilt and Nehemiah was already leading many social reforms – the people gather for Ezra to read ‘the book of the Law’. They are moved to tears as they hear Scripture read aloud to them. Bible Sunday Project Manager Ben Whitnall says, “We are encouraging people to think about, and celebrate, the continuing power of Scripture to inspire change – as we have seen it is doing in Ethiopia. “Just like in Nehemiah’s time, amazing things continue to happen when people hear the Bible message.”

Multi-pronged strategy required to root out corruption: President

New Delhi, OctOber 29 (Pti): Corruption has to be rooted out by adopting a multipronged strategy including prompt delivery systems, transparent processes and public accountability, President Pratibha Patil said on Saturday. Addressing Governors and Lt Governors at the two-day ’Conference of Governors’ here, the President said public sentiment against corruption in public life was on the rise as this menace stalled development and eroded rule of law. “There is also heightened expectations among our citizens from the Indian polity. Corruption stalls development, undermines social progress, undercuts confidence in the fairness of public administration, impedes good governance, erodes the rule of law, distorts competitive conditions, dampens investments and above all hurts the common man the most. “It has to be rooted out. The

remedy lies in a multi - pronged strategy combining preventive and punitive interventions, including simpler rules, transparent processes, judicious exercise of discretion, prompt delivery systems, better public awareness, public accountability and discharge of responsibilities with utmost rectitude,” she said. Patil also spoke about the menace of ragging in educational institutions and urged the Governors, who are also Chancellors of state universities, to play an important role to wipe it out from the system. “I will also like to focus your attention on the inhuman conduct on the part of senior students, inflicting physical cruelty and mental torment on freshers, that have outraged society. The apex court has taken a strong stand against ragging. The Ministry of Human Resource Development has endeavoured to build a credible architecture of deterrence.

“Many States have enacted laws, rules and regulations to prevent ragging. The regulatory structures have to be constantly monitored and all inadequacies removed. While it is the primary responsibility of the management of educational institutions and teachers to prevent ragging, parents and guardians have to be mobilised to counsel their wards to behave more responsibly,” she said. Patil also sought to rope in NGOs to foster a climate of awareness against ragging. “Your persuasive influence, especially as Chancellors of state Universities can immensely help in wiping out this blot,” she said. The President also asked Governors to play a pivotal role in safeguarding the interests of the varied sections of population living in autonomous district councils created under the Sixth Schedule. “It is often complained that the Autonomous District Councils created under the Sixth Schedule

have been stunted in their functioning, due to tight regulatory control by the state government and impediments in the flow of funds. The counter complaints are that wherever Autonomous District Councils become entrenched, they have deprived traditional village institutions from having a say in decision-making,” Patil remarked. Pointing out the role of Governors in the Sixth Schedule areas, she said they should play a pivotal role in safeguarding the interests of varied sections of population residing there, and in harmoniously intertwining the indigenous good governance practices and traditional institutional mechanisms with modern system of administration. Touching upon various other important issues, Patil said “we cannot lose sight of the multiple challenges of terrorism, Left Wing Extremism and insurgency facing us. India’s external

and internal security is paramount and requires foremost attention.” Both Central and state governments have to work hand-in- hand to fortify security architecture, and create an effective deterrence to achieve zero tolerance of terrorist activities, she said. Another area where the Constitution casts a specific and special responsibility on the Governors is the administration of Scheduled Areas and the role of Governors acquires greater relevance since a large chunk of the Scheduled Areas is affected by Left Wing Extremism, she said. “There is a felt need for a sensitive and sympathetic administration. You may also urge the state governments to intensify the government - tribal interface at the grassroot level, to map out the most optimal path for their good. The functioning of the Tribes Advisory Council has to be invigorated,” the President said.

‘India played big role in its bid for UNSC seat’

KArAchi, OctOber 29 (Pti): India played a big role in supporting Pakistan’s successful bid to become a nonpermanent member of the powerful UN Security Council, Islamabad’s envoy to the world body Abdullah Hussain Haroon said here today. Many of the countries that Pakistan had considered as friends were no longer its friends, but India “supported us in becoming a non-permanent member of the 15-member Security Council,” Haroon told reporters at the Karachi airport. Pakistan, which was challenged by Kyrgyzstan, was backed by 129 of the 193 member states in the UN General Assembly. Kyrgyzstan polled 55 votes. Pakistan will replace Lebanon, which currently occupies the Asian seat, on January 1, 2012, for a two-year term. Haroon said that Pakistan had worked very hard in the past six months to win votes for the prestigious seat. “I think we should not be discouraged by the reaction by some of the nations in the UN because I can say the world wants Pakistan to play its positive role in the global scenario,” he said. Pakistan has been on the Council six times earlier -- 1952-53, 196869, 1976-77, 1983-84, 1993-94 and 2003-04. It’s new term would overlap with India -- which began its two-year tenure on January 1 this year -- for the fourth time. Pakistan and India had earlier shared terms on the Security Council in 1968, 1977 and 1984. Haroon said Pakistan was committed to multilateralism and promoting principles and purposes enshrined in the UN Charter. To a question on US drone attacks in Pakistan’s tribal areas, he said he could only take up the issue if the government authorised him to do so. “But we should not be scared of these attacks.” he added.

Team Anna core group stays, warns Cong on Lokpal

ghAziAbAD, OctOber 29 (iANs): Conveying a sense of unity after a series of controversies dogged key members, Team Anna Saturday declared that its core committee will not be disbanded and threatened to campaign against the Congress during the upcoming assembly polls if a strong Lokpal bill was not passed in parliament’s winter session. Team Anna also termed its decision of opposing the Congress in Hisar Lok Sabha bypoll as “correct and successful”. “There is no question of the core committee being disbanded. The government is attacking the core committee which will be strongly replied to. We will not allow attention to be diverted from Jan Lokpal bill,” team member Arvind Kejriwal said after a five-hour meeting of the core committee in this suburban town near Delhi. The core committee had passed a unanimous resolution which rejected charges that the donations given to the movement had been wrongly placed with Public Cause Research Foundation (PCRF), an organisation linked to him, he said. “This movement to get Jan Lokpal bill passed is a movement of crores of people being led by Anna

Hazare. Core committee members and volunteers have played a prominent role along with crores of people of the country. Hence, there is no reason to disband the core committee,” Kejriwal said reading out the decisions taken by the core committee. Attacking the government, Kejriwal said it was aiming to distract attention from the issue of Jan Lokpal bill and damaging the image of the movement by using official machinery to attack core committee members. He said the core committee had fully supported the decision to make Lokpal bill an issue in the Hisar Lok Sabha bypoll. “It cannot be surmised from the decision that the movement is against Congress or in favour of any party,” he said. “Because the Congress did not give a letter of support though it has the maximum accountability as leading party of the ruling coalition at the centre... hence we were forced to take initiative to oppose its candidate,” Kejriwal said, adding that all members present at the meeting endorsed the decision. Referring to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Oct 10 letter to Hazare assuring the government’s commitment to a strong Lokpal bill, Kejriwal said if the

letter had come earlier, there probably would not have been the need to campaign against the Congress. “The government should realise its responsibility and get the Jan Lokpal bill passed in the winter session of Parliament. If this does not happen, the movement will have to adopt the same strategy (of opposing Congress) in elections to five states,” he said. Punjab, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Goa and Manipur are states expected to go to the polls early next year. Kejriwal said PCRF has been discharging responsibility of being secretariat to the movement and running its accounts from October 2010. “The details of donations and its entire expense are available on the website of the movement,” he said. Kejriwal said he and Prashant Bhushan will proceed to Ralegan Siddhi Saturday evening to meet Hazare, who is on a vow of silence. Kejriwal said former members of the core committee - Rajendra Singh and P.V. Rajagopal - should not have gone to the media with their resignations and Kumar Vishwas with his letter to Hazare in which he demanded that the core committee be suspended and expanded to make it more representative.

BJP warns against removal of AFSPA in Jammu & Kashmir

New Delhi, OctOber 29 (AgeNcies): With the government struggling to craft its stance on the contentious question of withdrawal of Armed Forces ( Special Powers) Act from some parts of J&K, the BJP joined the debate by warning the Centre against diluting the law. As the defence ministry insists that the views of the Army and the Unified Command need to be heeded on whether to withdraw AFSPA from certain areas in J&K, BJP weighed in to oppose withdrawal of the law which security forces consider a buffer against harassment in the name of protection of human rights. Sources in the government confirmed that the Centre was unhappy with J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah’s public announcement regarding partial rollback of the law currently in force across J&K. They said the Army has questioned the state government’s decision on the ground of improved law and order situation in the state. “AFSPA has been in force in swathes of Assam even when violence in the state never reached the level J&K has

Digvijay Singh suffering from ‘foot in mouth syndrome’: BJP

New Delhi, OctOber 29 (AgeNcies): BJP on Saturday slammed Digvijay Singh for attacking Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, saying he was suffering from “foot in mouth syndrome” and asked Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi whether the Congress leader was their spokesperson. “We demand specific answers from Sonia Gandhi and preferably from Rahul Gandhi...whether he (Singh) is their spokesperson. Congress says he is not their mouthpiece, their spokesperson,” BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said. Rudy recalled a statement of Singh made in December 2010 in which he had reportedly said whatever he does and says, he has the blessings of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. “BJP is constrained to ask this question whether has he been made in charge of dirty tricks department of the Congress party. Or has the topmost leadership in the Congress party given him the responsibility to raise trivial and controversial issues to divert the attention of the country from corruption,” he asked. witnessed for decades,” a senior defence ministry source said. In the deliberations, defence ministry also pointed out that Imphal, which is not under AFSPA unlike the rest of Manipur, has suffered more from extremist attacks. Besides their appreciation for Army’s viewpoint, many in the government and Congress advice caution on the sensitive

matter also because of political considerations. They pointed out that withdrawal of AFSPA could encourage the BJP to repeat its charge of security being compromised because of political expediency; in this case to placate the J&K chief minister. They also said a rushed decision may create the same sort of complications that the party is faced with in Telan-

gana. The warning proved correct when leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley came out strongly to oppose the demand to scale AFSPA back. In a detailed note, the BJP leader argued that armed forces needed the protection of AFSPA in order to discharge their duties effectively. Pointing out that AFSPA protected the security forces, including paramilitary troops, from prosecution or legal proceedings except those sanctioned by the Centre, Jaitley said withdrawal of the cover would leave the security forces hobbled. “When I visited the state last year, I was informed by the officers of paramilitary forces that more than 2,500 applications for prosecuting personnel of armed forces were pending with the central government,” Jaitley said. “If this protection (AFSPA) is withdrawn, it would empower various vested interests to prosecute officials of the armed forces and other paramilitary forces indiscriminately. Obviously, this would dis-incentivise personnel of these forces from taking adequate steps against separatist groups,” he further argued.

PM Manmohan Singh heads for G20 Summit in Cannes Wednesday

New Delhi, OctOber 29 (iANs): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh heads for the G20 Summit in Cannes in the French Riviera Wednesday, with a somewhat limited role for India this time due to the primary focus of the leaders expected on resolving the Eurozone crisis. Like in the past five summits at Washington, London, Pittsburgh, Toronto and Seoul, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia will be the prime minister’s sherpa, or chief interlocutor, during this event as well, Thursday and Friday. The prime minister returns Saturday. His other engagements are being worked out. “This year, this is not an issue on which there is much of an India focus,” Ahluwalia told a pre-summit briefing here. “It is an annual event, and it will get dominated by issues related to the management of the global economy and the Eurozone

In 16 yrs, farm suicides cross a quarter mn

MuMbAi, OctOber 29 (AgeNcies): It’s official. The country has seen over a quarter of a million farmers’ suicides between 1995 and 2010. The National Crime Records Bureau’s latest report on ‘Accidental Deaths & Suicides in India’ places the number for 2010 at 15,964. That brings the cumulative 16-year total from 1995 — when the NCRB started recording farm suicide data — to 2,56,913, the worst-ever recorded wave of suicides of this kind in human history. Maharashtra posts a dismal picture with over 50,000 farmers killing themselves in the country’s richest State in that period. It also remains the worst State for such deaths for a decade now. Close to two-thirds of all farm suicides have occurred in five States: Maharashtra, Karnataka, A.P., Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The data show clearly that the last eight years were much worse than the preceding eight. As many as 1,35,756 farmers killed themselves in the 2003-10 period. For 1995-2002, the total was 1,21,157. On average, this means the number of farmers killing themselves each year between 2003 and 2010 is 1,825 higher than the numbers that took their lives in the earlier period. Which is alarming since the total number of farmers is declining significantly. Compared to the 1991 Census, the 2001 Census saw

a drop of over seven million in the population of cultivators (main workers). The corresponding census data for 2011 are yet to come in, but their population has surely dipped further. In other words, farm suicides are rising through the period of India’s agrarian crisis, even as the number of farmers is shrinking. While the 2010 numbers show a dip of 1,404 from the 2009 figure of 17,368, there is little to cheer about. “There was a similar dip in 2008, only to be followed by the worst numbers in six years in 2009,” points out Professor K. Nagaraj, an economist at the Asian College of Journalism, Chennai, who did the largest ever study of the farm suicides covering a decade (The Hindu, November 12-15, 2007). “This one-year decline does not in any way indicate we have turned the corner. This dip happened mostly because of one-off falls in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. In fact, a look at the ‘Big 5’ who drive the numbers shows the fallout of the agrarian crisis to be as grim as ever. crisis.” This will also be the first time the Eurozone crisis will figure at a G20 Summit and provide an occasion for the leaders to express a view on the measures taken by some European nations on the crisis in the region that is threatening to spill over. Ahluwalia said policymakers in India and China, who co-chair an initiative called the mutual assessment process, will nevertheless have inputs for the leaders on how the fiscal policies of members fit together to collectively achieve the G20’s goals. “The mutual assessment process also includes four Eurozone countries -- Germany, Italy, France and Spain -- and it, of course, includes other countries, including China and India,” he said. “This process will come forth with what would be regarded as the policy priorities in each of these countries which could bring about or create the global condition for the revival of

global growth.” In the past India had played a significant role at G20 Summits on issues such as reform of the Bretton Woods twins, greater voting rights for emerging economies like India in the International Monetary Fund and bringing the focus on development agenda. The G20, originally formed at the level of finance ministers and central bank governors in 1999 after the East Asian economic crisis, assumed significance after its elevation to a summit-level forum in 2008, following the global financial crisis. Besides India and host France, the G20 comprises Brazil, US, Canada, China, Argentina, Australia, South Korea, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, Britain, and the European Union. These members collectively account for 80 percent of the global economy and twothirds of the world population.

‘Primary schools not child-friendly’ “..There is a long-term engagement needed with teachers to make the schools childfriendly in India..”

New Delhi, OctOber 28 (iANs): Primary schools in India are not childfriendly, a survey said, even as the right to education (RTE) is lauded for increasing enrolment of students. The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) launched here, covers five states of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand and Rajasthan. It monitored the education process in nearly 900 schools with around 30,000 students. “Around 850 hours of classroom observations demonstrate that most primary schools are not child-friendly at all,” said the ASER report prepared in collaboration with UNICEF and UNESCO. “Teachers use some kind of teaching and learning material other than the textbook in less than one out of every 10 classrooms,” it added. Classroom absenteeism was found to be a

major issue in the longitudinal study that tracked the teaching methodology over a period of 15 months in the academic year 2009-10. Infrastructure, enrolment and attendance are taken into account, the report stated. “In standard 4, less than one-fourth of all children could do a numerical threedigit subtraction problem with borrowing. The biggest challenge that surfaced in the survey was how to guarantee ageappropriate education to children,” the report mentioned. “We seem to be going wrong with the dwindling headcount in schools even though the enrolment is high on paper, and the quality of education that is not considered,” said R. Govinda, vice chancellor of the National University of Educational Planning and Administration. “There is a long-term engagement needed with teachers to make the schools child-friendly in India,” Govinda added. Of the over 11,000 children tested in standard 5, only 3 out of 10 children were able to fluently read a standard 3-level text. Twenty percent of children surveyed were first generation school-goers, while less than 50 percent of households had any study material available for children.

Syrian forces pound Homs after dozens killed

lidiya district of Homs. NATO air forces played a central role in the overthrow of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, but the Western alliance has shown no appetite to intervene in Syria. Syria's opposition National Council has called for international protection. It has not explicitly requested military intervention, although street protesters have increasingly voiced that demand. Assad has not used his air force against protesters and a no-fly zone would have little impact on the crackdown unless, as in Libya, pilots attacked his ground forces and military bases. The antiAssad protesters have been energized by Gaddafi's death last week and activists said the city of Hama saw some of the biggest protests since Assad sent tanks and troops in July to seize it back from opposition control. Demonstrations were forced into the countryside by the military assault on cities three months ago. They remain widespread but have not matched the size of earlier protests. Authorities organized big pro-Assad demonstrations this week, with tens of thousands rallying in Damascus and the eastern town of Hasaka Wednesday, and more pouring on to streets of the Mediterranean city of Latakia Thursday. School children and public employees were ordered to attend.

Kabul suicide bomb kills 13 foreign troops

bEIRut, OctObER 29 (REutERs): Syrian tanks pounded an old district in the city of Homs Saturday and three people were killed, activists said, after one of the bloodiest days of the seven-month-old uprising against President Bashar al-Assad. Activists and residents said Syrian forces shot dead 40 civilians Friday when they fired on demonstrators calling for international protection from Assad's crackdown. One activist group said fierce fighting broke out in Homs on Friday night between dozens of army deserters and forces loyal to Assad. Seventeen soldiers were killed when the defectors attacked two security posts in the city, it said. The report by the Britishbased Syrian Organization for Human Rights highlights the emerging element of armed insurgency alongside mainly peaceful street protests demanding an end to 41 years of Assad family rule. The United Nations says 3,000 people, including nearly 200 children, have been killed in the unrest. Since the start of protests in March, Syrian authorities have blamed the violence on gunmen they say have killed 1,100 soldiers and police. Syria has barred most international media, making it hard to verify accounts from activists and authorities. But

the resilience of the protesters, the determination of authorities to crush dissent and the growing ranks of defectors have combined to make Syria's turmoil one of the most intractable confrontations of this year's Arab uprisings. The Syrian Observatory said three civilians were killed in Homs Saturday morning, one shot by a sniper and two by machinegun fire between Assad's forces and defectors. Residents said tanks fired anti-aircraft guns,

caNbERRa, OctObER 29 (aP): Qantas Airways grounded all of its aircraft around the world indefinitely on Saturday due to ongoing strikes by its workers. The Australian carrier’s entire fleet of 108 aircraft will remain grounded until unions representing pilots, mechanics and other ground staff reach an agreement with the airline over pay and conditions, Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce told a news conference in Sydney. “We have decided to ground the Qantas international and domestic fleets immediately,” Joyce said. Flights already in the air when the announcement was made were to continue to their destinations. Staff will not be required to show up at work and will not be paid starting Monday, Joyce said. Joyce said he made the decision early Saturday and then gained the approval of the Qantas board. The airline had been forced to reduce and reschedule flights for weeks because of a series of strikes and overtime work bans over staff concerns that their jobs are being moved overseas. Joyce estimated the grounding will cost the airline $20 million a day.

Friday's violence prompted Arab ministers to issue their strongest call yet on Assad to end the killing of civilians. The Arab League's committee on the Syrian crisis said it had sent an "urgent message ... to the Syrian governmentexpressingitssevere discontent over the continued killing of Syrian civilians."

NEW YORK, OctObER 29 (aP): Scores of people waved tiny flags after taking the oath of U.S. citizenship at the foot of the Statue of Liberty on Friday, 125 years after the iconic American symbol welcomingvisitorsandimmigrants was dedicated. "We are a nation of diverse people," Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar said during the naturalization ceremony on Liberty Island. "And that diversity strengthens our nation." The new Americans, 125 immigrants from 46 countries, pledged to renounce foreign power, then posed for photos with their citi-

JERusalEM, OctObER 29 (aP): The Palestinian president, in a remarkable assessment delivered on Israeli TV, has said the Arab world erred in rejecting the United Nations' 1947 plan to partition Palestine into a Palestinian and a Jewish state. The Palestinian and Arab refusal to accept a U.N. plan to partition the thenBritish-controlled mandate of Palestine sparked widespread fighting, then Arab military intervention after Israel declared independence the following year. The Arabs lost the war. "It was our mistake. It was an Arab mistake as a whole," Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told Channel 2 TV in a rare interview to the Israeli media on Friday. "But do they (the Israelis) punish us for this mistake 64 years? Abbas also addressed his negotiations with former Israeli leader Ehud Olmert, now in the spotlight because of the publication of the memoirs of former U.S. Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice. Rice backs Israel's account that Olmert made a peace offer that was rejected, while Palestinians say that talks never actually reached a point where a firm offer was on the table. Abbas claimed that he and Olmert were "very

close" to reaching a peace agreement in 2008, before the Israeli leader left office under the cloud of corruption allegations. "It was a very good opportunity," he said. "If he stayed two, three months, I believe in that time we could have concluded an agreement." He confirmed Olmert's account that the Israeli leader was prepared to withdraw from 93.5 percent of the West Bank. The Palestinians, Abbas added, responded by offering to let Israel retain 1.9 percent of the West Bank. In her forthcoming book, "No Higher Honor," excerpted in Newsweek this week, Rice claims that the Palestinians rejected Olmert's proposal. Rice said Olmert proposed in a May 2008 conversation with her to cede about 94 percent of the West Bank, and to share sovereignty over the disputed holy city of Jerusalem and put an international body in charge of its religious shrines. In its waning days, Rice wrote, the administration of President George W. Bush tried one last time to wrest a peace deal: "To have an Israeli prime minister on record offering those remarkable elements and a Palestinian president accepting them would have pushed the peace process to

Kabul, OctObER 29 (REutERs): A suicide car bomber killed 13 foreign troops in the Afghan capital Kabul on Saturday, the deadliest single ground attack in 10 years of war in Afghanistan. "We can confirm that 13 International Security Assistance Force members have died," said a spokesman for the NATOled International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), giving no further details. Earlier, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry said three civilians and a police officer had been killed in the attack. Excluding helicopter crashes, it was the deadliest single incident for foreign troops since the war began in 2001. Lethal attacks are relatively rare in heavily guarded Kabul, compared with the south and east of Afghanistan, but Saturday's killings came less than two months after insurgents launched a 20-hour assault on the U.S. embassy in Kabul. The assault on the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) convoy took place in the Darulaman area in the west of the city, near the national museum. The former royal palace, now in ruins, is also in the area, along with several government departments, and Afghan and foreign military bases. The Taliban later claimed responsibility for the

a new level. Abbas refused." In their last meeting before Bush left office in December 2008, "The President took Abbas into the Oval Office alone and appealed to him to reconsider. The Palestinian stood firm, and the idea died," Rice wrote. On Friday, the chief Palestinian negotiator told The Associated Press that the Palestinians had never rejected the Israeli offer. With Abbas offering in his counter-proposal to let Israel annex 1.9 percent of the West Bank, Bush set a meeting for Jan. 3, 2009, to lock in the positions, which had been delivered verbally, "so the next administration could begin where we left off," he said. That meeting was scuttled because of Israel's December 2008 invasion of Gaza, Erekat said, and Olmert was soon out of office.

attack, saying they packed a four-wheel-drivevehiclewith 700 kg of explosives. Also on Saturday, three Australians and an Afghan linguist were killed in Uruzgan province in southern Afghanistan when an attacker wearing an Afghan National Army uniform opened fire on them, authorities in neighboring Kandahar province said. Violence across Afghanistan is at its worst since the start of the war 10 years ago, according to the United Nations, despite the presence of more than 130,000 foreign troops. ISAF says there has recently been a fall in attacks by insurgents but this data excludes attacks that kill only civilians and attacks on Afghan security forces operating without international troops. On Thursday, insurgents armed with rifles and rocket-propelled grenades attacked two bases used by foreign troops in southern Afghanistan. An Afghan interpreter working for ISAF was killed in that attack, which stretched into Friday before the last of the four insurgents were killed. There has been a series of high-profile assassinations, as well as day-to-day attacks by Taliban raiders, over the past year. More than a dozen people were killed in the September attack on the U.S. embassy and ISAF headquarters.

Since that time, talks revived for only a brief three weeks last year. Last month, Abbas bypassed the troubled negotiations route to ask the U.N. to recognize an independent state of Palestine. In his interview with Channel 2, Abbas acknowledged the Palestinians might not be able to muster the necessary nine votes in the 15-member Security Council to approve the statehood bid. But majority support would be a moot point, anyway, because the United States has threatened to veto the statehood petition. Israel also opposes the U.N. bid, arguing, like the U.S., that only negotiations can yield a Palestinian state. Abbas said "it is difficult ... to launch any kind of negotiations" with the current Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, who takes a hawkish stand on territorial concessions. He said Netanyahu wants to retain an Israeli military presence along the West Bank's eastern border with Jordan for 40 years, even after the establishment of a Palestinian state. "I told him, I prefer occupation," Abbas said. Netanyahu has never publicly specified how long he wants to hold on to that territory, known as the Jordan Valley, and his office had no reaction to Abbas' comment.

Heavy drinking tied to ICC warns Libya’s Saif al-Islam against fleeing higher stomach cancer risk NEW YORK, OctObER 29 (REutERs HEaltH): Men who down more than four alcoholic drinks in a day may have a heightened risk of stomach cancer, a large European analysis suggests. A number of studies have looked at whether people's drinking habits are related to their risk of stomach cancer, and come to mixed conclusions. These latest findings, from a study of more than 500,000 European adults, suggest that heavydrinking men are more likely to develop the cancer than light drinkers are. At the start of the study, 10,000-plus men said they averaged more than four drinks per day. And their odds of developing stomach cancer over the next decade were twice those of light drinkers (who had the equivalent of about half a drink per day or less). When the researchers looked more closely at the type of alcohol people consumed, they found that beer, in particular -- as opposed to wine or liquor -seemed to be connected to stomach cancer risk. There were no similar connections seen in women, according to the researchers, led by Dr. Eric J. Duell of the Catalan Institute of On-

cology in Barcelona, Spain. But there were also far fewer heavy drinkers among the female participants (just under 2,300). The findings, reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, do not prove that alcohol itself leads to stomach cancer in some men. And the absolute risk for any one heavy drinker may be small. Of nearly 13,000 men and women who were heavy drinkers when they entered the study, just 33 developed stomach cancer over the follow-up period. Still, experts already recommend that people who drink do so only in moderation. That generally means no more than two drinks per day for men, and no more than one for women. Heavy drinking is linked to cancers of the mouth and throat, as well as other serious conditions like scarring of the liver. Stomach cancer is relatively uncommon in the U.S. and other Western countries, though it's much more prevalent in other parts of the world, particularly developing nations. About 21,500 Americans will be diagnosed with stomach cancer this year, according to the American Cancer Society. Smoking is one of the risk factors for the disease. And in

some past studies, it's been hard to separate the possible effects of heavy drinking on stomach cancer from those of smoking -- since the same people often have both habits. In the current study, though, Duell's team found that heavy drinking was linked to stomach cancer in men regardless of smoking habits. The link also held when the researchers factored in people's diet habits (red and processed meats, for example, have been tied to stomach cancer) and any infection with H. pylori -- a type of bacteria that contributes to ulcers. While most people with H. pylori do not develop cancer, persistent infection is thought to raise the risk of stomach cancer in certain people. If heavy drinking is a cause of stomach cancer, it may be related to one of the metabolic byproducts of alcohol -- called acetaldehyde. The substance is a known human carcinogen, Duell's team notes. On top of that, beer contains compounds known as nitrosamines, which cause cancer in animals. So it's possible, the researchers speculate, that the combination of those substances and acetaldehyde could explain why beer, in particular, was tied to stomach cancer in this study.

tHE HaGuE, OctObER 29 (REutERs): The International Criminal Court said on Saturday Saif al-Islam Gaddafi was in contact through intermediaries about surrendering for trial, but it also had information mercenaries were trying to spirit him to a friendly African nation. The ICC has warned the 39-year-old, apparently anxious not to be captured by Libyan interim government forces in whose hands his father Muammar Gaddafi was killed last week, that it could order a mid-air interception if he tried to flee by plane from his Sahara desert hideout for a safe haven. The ICC's comments offered some corroboration of reports from Tripoli's new National Transitional Council (NTC) leaders and African neighbours that he has taken refuge with Tuareg nomads in the borderlands between Libya and Niger. "There are some people connected with him that are in touch with people connected with us ... it's through intermediaries," ICC Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo told Reuters in an interview during a visit to Beijing. "We have some information that there is a mercenary group trying to help him to move to a different country, so we are trying to prevent this activity,"

said Moreno-Ocampo. "We are also working with some states to see if we can disrupt this attempt. Some of them are South Africans allegedly." Moreno-Ocampo said the ICC was not making any deal with Saif al-Islam but was explaining through the contacts that he had to face trial because he had been indicted for war crimes. "He says he is innocent," said the prosecutor. NTC officials told Reuters earlier this week that monitoring of satellite calls and other intelligence indicated Saif alIslam was considering turning himself in to the ICC, and trying to arrange an aircraft to get him there and out of reach of NTC fighters. However, surrender is only one option. The Gaddafis made friends with desert tribes in Niger, Mali and other poor former French colonies in West Africa, as well as farther afield in countries like Zimbabwe and Sudan, some of them also recipients of largesse during the 42-year rule of Muammar Gaddafi, a self-styled African "king of kings." France, a key backer of February's revolt, reminded Africans of obligations to hand over the surviving ICC indictees - former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi and Saif al-Islam. "We don't care whether he goes on foot, by plane, by

boat, by car or on a camel, the only thing that matters is that he belongs in the ICC," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero. Niger, Mali, Chad and Burkina Faso, a swathe of arid states to the south of Libya, are all signatories to the treaty that set up the ICC, established to give a permanent international tribunal for crimes against humanity after ad hoc bodies set up for Rwanda, the former Yugoslavia and Sierra Leone. "If we reach agreement, logistical measures for his transfer will be taken," ICC spokesman Fadi El Abdallah said. "There are different scenarios, depending on what country he is in." Without its own police force, the ICC depends on coopera-

tion from member states, which do not include world powers the United States, Russia and China. Algeria, which took in Saif al-Islam's mother, sister, brother Hannibal and halfbrother Mohammed, is not a signatory. Nor are Sudan or Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe. As well as enjoying protection from Tuareg allies who traditionally provided close security for the Gaddafis, Saif al-Islam may still be in the company of mercenaries from elsewhere in Africa, including possibly South Africa, NTC officials say. A South African newspaper, in an unconfirmed report, said South African mercenaries were working to fly him out. A bodyguard who saw Saif al-Islam as he fled last week from one of the Gaddafi clan's last bastions near the capital told Reuters that he seemed "nervous" and "confused." He escaped even though his motorcade was hit by a NATO air strike as it left Bani Walid on October 19, the day before his father died in Sirte. Three of Saif al-Islam's brothers were killed in the war. Another, Saadi, has found refuge in Niger. The arrest or surrender of Saif al-Islam would bring a new prominence for the nineyear-old ICC, whose highest profile suspect to date is

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, who remains defiantly in office, defended by many fellow Africans. Following the killing of Muammar Gaddafi, most probably at the hands of fighters who filmed themselves battering and abusing him, Western allies of Libya's new leaders urged them to impose respect for human rights. NTC leaders would like to run their own trials, but acknowledge that their writ barely runs in the deep south. Their NATO allies, now winding up a mission that backed the revolt, have expressed little enthusiasm for hunting a few individuals across a vast tract of empty continent -- though French troops based in West Africa might be best placed to step in with transport if Saif al-Islam did choose to surrender. Saif al-Islam was once seen as a liberal reformer, architect of a rapprochement with Western states on whom his father waged proxy guerrilla wars for decades. But he responded with belligerent rhetoric after the revolt erupted in Libya. The ICC accuses him of hiring mercenaries to carry out a plan, worked out with his father and Senussi, to kill unarmed protesters inspired by "Arab Spring" uprisings elsewhere.

NBA cancels all games through Nov. 30

NEW YORK, OctO bER 29 (AP): NBA Commissioner David Stern canceled all NBA games through Nov. 30 on Friday after NBA labor negotiations broke down for the second time in a week. "It's not practical, possible or prudent to have a full season now," Stern said. After two days of making some progress on salary cap issues, the two sides brought the revenue split back into the discussion and got stuck on both. Owners are insistent on a 50-50 split of revenues, while players last formally proposed they get 52.5 percent, leaving them about $100 million apart annually. Players were guaranteed 57 percent in the previous collective bargaining agreement. "We made a lot of concessions, but unfortunately at this time it's not enough, and we're not prepared or unable at this time to move any further," union executive director Billy Hunter said. Stern said the NBA owners were "willing" to go to 50 percent. But he said Hunter was unwilling to "go a penny below 52," that he had been getting many calls from agents and then closed up his book and walked out of the room. Hunter said the league initially moved its target down to 47 percent during Friday's six-hour session then returned to its previous proposal of 50 percent of revenues. "Derek (Fisher) and I made it clear

that we could not take the 50-50 deal to our membership. Not with all the concessions that we granted," Hunter said. "We said we got to have some dollars." But with more games canceled, the losses will begin to mount. "We're going to have to recalculate how bad the damage is," Stern said. "The next offer will reflect the extraordinary losses that are piling up now." Just a day earlier, Stern had said he would consider it a failure if the two sides didn't reach a deal in the next few days and vowed they would

take "one heck of a shot" to get a deal. No further talks have been scheduled. Union president Fisher said it was difficult to say why talks broke down, or when they would start up again. "We're here, we've always been here, but today just wasn't the day to try and finish this out," he said. Fisher said there were still too many system restrictions in the owners' proposal. Players want to keep a system similar to the old one, and fear owners' ideas would limit player movement. And though they

might be inclined to give up one if they received more concessions on the other, players make it sound as if they are the ones doing all the giving back. The old cap system allowed teams to exceed it through the use of a number of exceptions, many of which the league wants to tweak or even eliminate. Hunter has called a hard cap a "blood issue" to players, and though the league has backed off its initial proposal calling for one, players think the changes owners want would work

like one. "We've told them that we don't want a hard cap. We don't want a hard cap any kind of way, either an obvious hard cap or a hard cap that may not be as obvious to most people but we know it works like a hard cap," Hunter said. "And so you get there, and then all of a sudden they say, 'Well, we also have to have our number.' And you say, 'Well wait a minute, you're not negotiating in good faith.'" When players offered to reduce their guarantee from 57 percent to 53 percent, Hunter said that

would have transferred about $1.1 billion to owners over six years. Now, at 52.5, he said that would grow to more than $1.5 billion. But even a 50-50 split would be too high for some hard-line owners, because it would reduce only $280 million of the $300 million they said they lost last season. Owners initially proposed a BRI split that players said would have had them around 40 percent. Though they will miss a paycheck on Nov. 15, Hunter said each player would have received a minimum

of $100,000 from the escrow money that was returned to them to make up the difference after salaries fell short of the guaranteed 57 percent of revenues last season. The small groups that were meeting grew a bit Friday. Union vice presidents Chris Paul — wearing a Yankees cap for his trip to New York — and Theo Ratliff joined the talks, and economist Kevin Murphy returned after he was unavailable Thursday. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban stayed for the session after taking part Thursday.

Red Bull's Vettel takes pole for Indian Grand Prix GREAtER NOIDA, OctObER 29 (AFP): World champion Sebastian Vettel raced to his 13th pole position of the year at the Indian Grand Prix Saturday as he bids to equal Michael Schumacher's record for most wins in a season. The young German, who reclaimed his title this month in Japan, heads an all-Red Bull front row at India's first Formula One race after Lewis Hamilton, who qualified second, was penalised three places for an earlier infringement. Vettel is now just one off Nigel Mansell's 1994 record of 14 poles in one year, and he can match Schumacher's achievement of winning 13 races in 2004 if he is victorious in all three remaining races. "At the end my lap wasn't 100 percent but you always get out of the car thinking (that)," Vettel said. "It's good to start the race from the front tomorrow. I think it's going to be an interesting race." Ferrari's Fernando Alonso will start in third place at Buddh International Circuit on Sunday with Jenson Button, vying to hang on to second place in the standings, fourth. Button's McLaren partner Lewis Hamilton will begin his challenge from fifth after being penalised three grid places for ignoring warning flags during free practice on Friday. Vettel led the drivers into the 10-minute final session and he was never headed as he clocked 1min 24.178sec to take the honours on the dust-strewn course near New Delhi. But seven-time champion Schumacher failed to reach the top-10 shoot-out after barely squeaking into the second qualifying segment in a disappointing outing. Button wore a black armband in memory of British IndyGP driver Dan Wheldon while Massa wore a '58' sticker on his helmet to commemorate MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli. Both racers died in competition in a tragic month for motorsport, casting a shadow over preparations for India's first ever grand prix held on a dusty development site near New Delhi. High excitement over the event has been tempered by disquiet at the massive disparity between Formula One's super-rich and local people living in one of the world's poorest regions. But organisers are already celebrating a smooth inauguration of the $400 million circuit as a boost for India's image after the embarrassment of last year's shambolic New Delhi Commonwealth Games.

Pele

SAO PAULO, OctO bER 29 (AP): Brazil is not yet ready to host the 2014 World Cup, football great Pele said. According to Pele, chaotic organization and communication difficulties are the biggest problems facing Brazil as it prepares for the World Cup. "Brazil is not ready," Pele said. "Not yet, it is not ready. The biggest problem, I think, is the organization, that is a big problem, so too is the communications." But despite his fears, Pele said he was confident all "will run smoothly" by the time the World Cup gets under way. "I am now working directly with the president of Brazil who is doing her best to help out with the organization," he said. In July, president Dilma Rousseff named Pele the honorary ambassador for the World Cup. At the time, he criticized delays in building stadiums and other infrastructure. Pele spoke to ESPN on Wednesday, the same day that Brazil's sports minister Orlando Silva resigned amid corruption allegations. He was the sixth minister forced out of Rousseff's government. Four of the others had also faced corruption allegations. A recent government report on Brazil's preparations for the World Cup said that as of September, renovation work had not begun on five of the 13 airports that will be used during the tournament. The report also said that seven of the 12 host cities have not begun other infrastructure work, and only nine of the nearly 50 transportation projects planned for the tournament were under way. Earlier this month former Brazil striker Romario, now a congressman, told Agencia Brasil, the government's news agency: "Maybe because of politics, work which was supposed to be halfway done hasn't even started." The government, however, does not seem worried about the apparent lack of progress and is confident that everything will eventually get done. Officials also dismiss the notion Brazil is not doing enough. "Brazil is doing the necessary work for the World Cup and there are no signs that deadlines will be missed," the sports ministry's media office said.

‘Poverty a reality but India deserves Formula 1’

NOIDA, OctObER 29 (REUtERS): Force India co-owner Vijay Mallya on Friday fiercely defended India's right to host a Formula One grand prix race, saying the country's economic growth was as much a reality as its poverty. Critics have flayed this weekend's inaugural Indian Grand Prix as an instance of misplaced priority in the world's second most populous nation with an abysmal malnutrition rate and skewed economic growth. According to Mallya, that does

not mean India should not host events such as the one being held on the $450 million Buddh International Circuit on the outskirts of Delhi. "In every country, there are the privileged and the underprivileged. We have under-privileged people in our country, but that does not mean the country must be bogged down or weighed down," Mallya told reporters. "India is a progressive country, we have a strongly growing economy, a large economy. The government is doing all it can to

address the need of the poor or the under-privileged people, but India must move on. "The (2010) Commonwealth Games were held in India and now it's Formula One. I'm sure there will be several more global events in our country because this is a world class country in many ways." For now, Mallya would rather cherish the fulfilment of a longheld dream. "It's something I have dreamed of for over 30 years and this weekend will be a very emotional one for me. "We

have had an Indian team since 2008 on the Formula One grid and now a grand prix here. This is unbelievable -- fantastic." Race organisers endured early embarrassment on Friday when a stray dog red-flagged the morning practice session. It, however, could not shake the belief of the local drivers that the event has made the right start. "We had dogs in Turkey, Brazil... it's nothing new. It's one of those things you know," Team Lotus's Indian reserve

Karun Chandhok told Reuters. "It was a great first day show and (promoters) Jaypee (Sports International) can be proud of it. I'm coming from the drivers' briefing and they are absolutely delighted with the circuit. Nobody had anything bad to say." HRT's Narain Karthikeyan, who will be the lone local driver competing in Sunday's race, echoed the view. "It's not ideal, of course, but we have got our own unique teething problems in India. Things would get better next year," he said.

MELbOURNE, OctO bER 29 (AP): Cricket Australia said Saturday that former test opener Simon Katich will face possible sanctions under its code of behavior for making "detrimental public comment" about his strained relationship with captain Michael Clarke. Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland said in a statement he was "surprised and disappointed" to see comments made by Katich after new full-time national selector John Inverarity indicated the door was not closed to Katich for future selection. On Friday, the 36-yearold Katich said a dressing room altercation he had with then vice-captain Clarke following the Sydney test against South Africa in 2009 would prevent

Simon Katich

him from ever playing again for Australia. Katich said the incident was a key factor behind his Cricket Australia contract not being renewed in June. Katich, when asked about Inverarity's comment that "the book is closed on nobody," said: "It's pleasing to hear, but I think you don't have to be Einstein to figure out it's not just the selectors that had a part in sending me on my way, so that's one

of those things." Asked who else played a part, Katich, who had a century for New South Wales in a domestic first-class match Friday, replied: "To be brutally honest, what happened in the dressing room here a few years ago probably didn't help my cause." Cricket Australia said it "emphatically refutes any suggestion that Michael Clarke influenced the independent selection panel's recommendations for the 2011-12 CA contract players' list. The suggestions made by Katich are completely erroneous, inappropriate and unfair to Clarke, the selectors and to CA." Sutherland said details of Katich's hearing will be released in the next few days. Katich said Friday he had not spoken to Clarke about the incident.

ennifer Lopez insists “you’ve got to love yourself first” before you can have a successful relationship. The singer-and-actress — who split from husband Marc Anthony in July after seven years of marriage — claims she has finally learned the secret to what makes love last after decades of romantic experience. “I think I’ve finally learned the biggest lesson of all,” she said. “You’ve got to love yourself first. You’ve got to be OK on your own before you can be

OK with somebody else. You’ve got to value yourself and know that you’re worth everything. And until you value yourself enough and love yourself enough to know that, you can’t really have a healthy relationship.” Jennifer — who has three-yearold twins Max and Emme with Marc — also revealed she plans to embark on any new relationship away from the glare of the spotlight. “I think to give something a chance, to really get to know somebody, you want to do it out of the public eye,” she said.

LONDON, OCtOber 29 (reUterS): Skipper Robin van Persie scored a hat-trick as Arsenal beat Chelsea 5-3 after twice coming from behind in a remarkable Premier League match at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. The astonishing victory was Arsene Wenger's 500th since he became Arsenal manager in 1996 and was Arsenal's first away win in the league this season. It also consigned Chelsea to a second successive defeat in a London derby after they lost at Queens Park Rangers last weekend and was the first time Chelsea had conceded five at home in a league match since Liverpool beat them 5-2 in December 1989. Chelsea lead through Frank Lampard after 14 minutes before van

Persie scored his first in the 36th minute before Chelsea skipper John Terry took advantage of some woeful Arsenal defending to put his side 2-1 up in the last minute of the first half. Andre Santos struck Arsenal's second equaliser early in the second half before Theo Walcott scored a brilliant solo goal to put Arsenal 3-2 ahead after 55 minutes. Juan Mata equalised for Chelsea with a brilliant swerving shot to make it 3-3 after 80 minutes but then Dutch striker Van Persie took advantage of some terrible Chelsea defending to make it 4-3 five minutes later and wrapped up the points with an outstanding shot in the second minute of stoppage time. In the other early game, Manches-

ter United bounced back from their harrowing 6-1 defeat by Manchester City last weekend when they beat Everton 1-0 at Goodison Park to move to within two points of City at the top of the Premier League, at least until City play Wolverhampton Wanderers in a 1400 GMT kickoff. Javier Hernandez scored what proved to be the winner and gave United their first victory at Goodison since September 2007 when he capitalised on good approach work from Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck before Patrice Evra crossed from the left for the unmarked Mexican to turn in from close range on 19 minutes. The early games were among eight Premier League matches on Saturday.
