The apex Naga body met the outfit on November 4 at “Peace Camp” in Kohima, where threadbare discussions over the IndoNaga political problem vis-àvis continuous killings dominated the deliberation. Such nature of dialogue would continue to be held, a communiqué from the Naga Hoho today said while informing that the meeting ended on a ‘positive note’. The Naga Hoho also expressed solidarity with the Forum for Naga Reconciliation in its organizing the second Reconciliation Soccer match between the Naga political groups versus Naga civil society on November 13 in Dimapur. The Naga Hoho wishes the forum grand success in their endeavor towards strengthening public actions in showing their solidarity to the reconciliation process. The Naga hoho communiqué was appended by publicity secretary C Daipao and joint secretary Nikhrolo Khalo.

NEW DELHI, NOVEMBER 11 (PTI): Congress general secretary Margaret Alva has resigned her post after the party’s Disciplinary Action Committee (DAC) apparently threatened action against her for her allegation that tickets were sold during Karnataka assembly polls early this year. Alva, who made the charge last week questioning the denial of an election ticket to her son Nivedith, met Congress chief Sonia Gandhi last night after appearing before the DAC headed by A K Antony and is believed to have offered to resign. The general secretary had alleged that “different yardsticks” were being adopted in deciding party nominations for upcoming elections in six states.

Reconciliation Soccer: A new threshold Hotbed Dimapur to witness noble battle
Morung Express News Dimapur | November 11
AFTER THE tremendous success of the historic ‘Reconciliation Soccer’ match held on the 9th of October 2008 at Kohima local ground, by popular demand, history is to be repeated. But this time, the event is to be strategically played out in Dimapur – the hotbed of factional violence in the recent times. Once again, the Naga civil society, with the Forum for Naga Reconciliation, the “reigning champions”, will attempt to defend their title against the Naga underground workers at DDSC stadium. This time, however, the Naga “political groups” (factions) are prepared for the battle. The concept of the Reconciliation Soccer match was adopted in the Chiangmai Summit II meet, with the idea of stretching the Naga political dialogue beyond the boardrooms. It was a symbolic gesture to inspire team spirit and cooperation towards achieving a common goal which was continued back in Nagaland through the initiative of the Nagaland Christian Forum and the forum. According to the convener of the forum, Rev. Dr.
Wati Aier, the exercise has already proven to be a good therapy and “loosened them up” remarkably even as the process enters into difficult territories. Rev. Dr. Wati said, that in any kind of conflict situation, it is necessary to be creative to strengthen the process. The soccer match is one such creative direction of the process. “Just their coming together, mingling together and shaking hands of people who have not seen each other in years, it is progress”, the convener said. The entire process is making steady progress and gaining momentum, Dr. Wati said. A similar opinion was expressed by the former president of the Naga Students’ Federation and now member of the Forum for Naga Reconciliation, Pushika Awomi. The game is indeed helping the process “a lot” Awomi said. Maintaining that all issues cannot be addressed sternly, he said such ‘get-togethers’ pave way to create friendly atmosphere and open minds. Though acknowledging that in the traditional Naga way, the final decision would always come from the top brass people, yet, Pushika believed exercises like the soccer match would help in delivering the message. This would subsequently help in hammering out a final decision, he said.
Speaking from his “army HQ” where cadres are practicing intensely for the coming match, MIP kilonser of the NSCN (IM), Tongmeth Konyak, termed the idea of the game, “very good”. Like all other aspects of the reconciliation process like prayers and singing, the soccer match too, would prove helpful in bringing the different groups closer together. Kilo kilonser of the FGN (Non Accordist), Zaleo echoed a similar sentiment that despite their individual difference and ‘stray incidents’, the common hope and purpose of the Nagas is being displayed in these exhibition matches. Having participated in the first match in Kohima, Zaleo enthusiastically exclaimed that he would be definitely playing again and expressed great optimism that “Nagas will be together one day”. MIP kilonser of the “GPRN/NSCN”, Alezo termed the exhibition match as a way of showing their commitment to the Naga reconciliation process. Disclosing that there had indeed been some development of understanding among themselves through the earlier matches, Alezo particularly expressed appreciation at the good response from the Naga public. continued on page 5
BREAKING ITS long silence over the stalled peace talks, the NSCN (IM) has taken serious note of what it termed as “10 years of political talks without finding a solution” and questioning India’s sincerity “in making a meaning of the Indo-Naga ceasefire”. “Gen (retd)” VS Atem Emissary to the Collective Leadership in a rare political statement pointed out that “this delayed solution or delaying tactics” was being done “deliberately under one pretext or the other”. “The deception of highest order is still a practice by India behind the Indo-Naga political talks, not willing to adhere to the spirit after the signing of the Indo-Naga ceasefire”, Atem stated. Citing proof of the Government of India’s ‘insincerity’, the NSCN (IM) pointed out that there are about 100 NSCN members killed by the Indian Armed forces. Arms were also seized at random or on ‘flimsy grounds’. Even NSCN officials who are involved in the peace process were also arrested or harassed for reasons not sanctioned under the present political process. The senior NSCN (IM) functionary went on to make charges against the intelligence agencies and pointed to what it described as “the pre-determined game plan of India against the NSCN”. It stated that ever since NSCN (IM) ‘took control’ of the Naga movement “India has been supporting factional groups and harboring the leaders using all inconceivable means”. “Transportation of arms of the K-group is done in an organized manner under the tacit support of the intelligences agencies”, Atem stated while adding that numerous evidences are available to
support these charges against India. It was alleged that in order to further destroy the NSCN (IM), the “intelligence hands played the communal card with great precision”. “They incited one Naga tribe against another. ‘Quit notice’ has not come from anywhere but from IB and RAW through Khaplang group. ‘Excommunication’ issue was also generated by these agencies but executed in the name of Sumi Hoho”, it was alleged. The NSCN (IM) stated that “going beyond and knowing no limit to damage the Naga’s socio-political stability these two notorious intelligence agencies are poking its nose in the Church related issue to throw spanner in the works of the Church bodies on factional line”. While pointing out “instances which really put to test the NSCN's nerve”, Atem stated that the “most glaring case is the stationing of all the declared terrorist groups in the Indiabacked Khaplang camp at Khehoi” and that “these are the different face of India on the issue of Indo-Naga political peace process and its much hyped voice against terrorism”. The NSCN (IM) also drew parallel with India’s handling of the Kashmir issue. “This also reflects similar face that speaks of India's insincerity and duplicity”, it stated while pointing out that ever since the Election Commission of India announced Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir the unrest that followed could not be treated as an isolated case of the law and order. “It is rather a spontaneous reaction of the Kashmir people against the Indian-imposed election. Because in the eye of the Kashmir people this is a serious dilution of Kashmir issue, and they have every moral authority to call for the boycott of the polls scheduled for the state”, the NSCN (IM) stated. continued on page 5
Tamil Nadu type education for Nagaland?
DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 11 (MExN): Tamil Nadu has successfully launched a statewide activity-based educational system which fully adheres to the principles and practice of learner-centered education. It has gained national acclaim and even received the Prime Minister’s Award in 2009. A seminar on quality education and their issues and challenges in Nagaland has recommended that Nagaland proposes to adapt this system on a pilotproject basis. The seminar was held as part of commem-
orating National Education Day. “There is good reason to expect that this project has the potential of ushering in wide and permanent changes towards quality education in Nagaland. The project is recommended,” said a copy of the seminar’s recommendation received here. Source said that the recommendations will be submitted to the state government. The seminar paper was presented by Kevi Liegise, State Project Director (Training) of the SSA. Admitting that private
schools in the state cater to more than 50 per cent of students in Nagaland, the seminar suggested the government extend generous financial assistance to them. It was recommended that grant-in-aid be enhanced considerably and that a sizeable portion of it extended for teacher’s welfare. Also stating that the search for quality education is futile without quality teachers, the seminar felt “this critical issue must be addressed and appropriate measures implemented”. continued on page 5

‘No slashing fuel prices’ ON BOARD PM'S SPECIAL AIRCRAFT, NOVEMBER 11 (PTI): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh appeared to rule out cutting prices of petrol and diesel till oil companies stop making losses on fuel sales. Contending that there were "limits to which Government can go on subsidising", Singh said it will wait till oil companies stop making losses before considering cutting petrol and diesel prices. "When we see that the Indian oil companies are able to sustain a reduction, that will be the right (time for such a) decision," Singh told reporters late last night on way back to New Delhi from his threeday maiden visit to energy rich Gulf countries. Oil companies have started making profit on sale of petrol but they continue to incur losses on diesel sales. "Oil companies have to bear a very heavy burden (and) there are limits to which Government can go on subsidising," he said. Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum currently make a profit of Rs 4.12 a litre on petrol but lose Rs 0.96 per litre on diesel. Together with domestic LPG and kerosene they are expected to lose Rs 128,135 crore in revenues this fiscal.

AS Lungmila, 50 years old mother of 9 seen here in a coma after a police action against Mapithel dam-affected people on November 3. Joyson Mazamo Senapati | November 11
“FIVE DAYS have passed since my mother was admitted to the ICU ward of Shija Hospital Imphal; she did not show any sign of improvement” said an aggrieved Shining at a sit-in-protest “against the police atrocities on the women rallyists” of Mapithel dam-affected people. Shining’s mother was hit on the head by a teargas container fired by the police. A big portion of the shattered skull (with many broken pieces) was removed in the surgery. Doctors who operated on her indicated that she has very less chance at survival. In medical terms, she is
in the terminal stages. As for Shining, she has accepted the reality that her mother will not recover. With tears in her eyes, she said, her mother, a hard-working and poor farmer is as good as dead. Shining wants the culprit punished and that the entire issue of the dam must be reviewed. On the 3rd of November, an agitated group of women belonging to the Mapithel dam-affected people marched to the dam site with a set of demands that included “review of the terms of reference”. They wanted to submit a memorandum to the IFCD minister N Biren to address their concern. As they approached the site, which is heavily militarised,
they were stopped by military personnel manning the gate. Their memorandum was not accepted. Instead the police personnel of Lamlai police station and IRB unleashed excessive force on the women, seriously injuring 45 of them. Victims recount that the action was pre-meditated. Moreover, the police vehicles refused to take the injured to the hospital. One of the injured, AS Lungmila is the mother of Shining, a 50 years old mother with 9 children. The youngest is a six years old KG student. AS Lungmila is from Louphong village, whose land will be permanently submerged by the dam. She grows vegetables and sells them to sustain her big family. Now she is in the ICU with a shattered skull and her neck badly injured. A glance at her still and bandaged body indicated that she is ‘as good as dead’. The broken pieces of her skull collected in a small plastic bag, negated any hope of her returning to life. At the relatives’ waiting room above the ICU, a tired and helpless Elijah, the husband of Lungmila, shook our hands and said there is no more hope of her improvement. We also met other relatives outside the hospital and exchanged few thoughts. They all look exhausted and sad. Sarita, another daughter of Lungmila feels no amount of monetary compensation (even if there was any) will ever compensate the loss of her mother. continued on page 5

DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 11 (MExN): Responding to the recent news feature on the plight of a kiwi farmer of Zunheboto district in this local daily, the Nagaland Empowerment of People through Economic Development (NEPED) has informed that about 7000 Kiwi plants had been introduced in Nagaland by NEPED in 2001, on an experimental basis, to research its potential as a marketable high value exotic fruit. This venture had been taken up in keeping with NEPED’s credo of experimentation through participatory farmer-led research based on scientific data, expert advice and market information, the department explained. Thus, it stated, the planting materials were distributed to villages in Phek, Zunheboto, Mokokchung, Kohima, and Wokha, with a major bulk of the consignment going to some villages of Zunheboto district as the site conditions were conducive for Kiwi propagation. The press release added that the intent had been to create Kiwi Seed Banks for further propagation if the experiment were to succeed, so that Naga farmers would have viable options for alternative incomes. However, though the experiment succeeded in small pockets of Phek and Zunheboto districts, it fizzled out in other districts, primarily because of the intensive labour involved, demanding soil conditions, long gestation period and short shelf life compounded by the challenges of transportation and packaging.
CTC informs on revision of electoral roll
DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 11 (MExN): The Chumukedima Town Council has informed all concerned ward members, gaonburas and conveners that the special revision of electoral roll had already commenced. In this regard, claimants (inclusion), objection, change of address and correction, will be carried out at the office of the CTC between November 11 to 15, 2008, and then from November 17 to 22, 2008, from 9:00 am onwards during office hours. The same will be done on November 16 and 23 at the Office of the EAC, CMD, the Council informed. Requesting “all concerned” to inform their respective wards and public “and do the needful,” the Chairperson of CTC, Neihu-U Kuotsu, further informed that only 3% for inclusion would be accepted for each polling station as per the directives of the Election Commis-
sion of India. With a mass social work arranged for November 26 from 7:00 am onwards, the CTC further informed that all concerned ward members, convener, gaonburas and youth presidents are to inform and supervise their respective ward public, while all participating are “requested to come with dao or spade and clean the National Highway from 7th Mile Junction upto Police Check Gate.” All business establishments have been directed to whitewash their firms and shops and fix a light on their firm’s signboards ‘compulsorily’ in order to beautify and illuminate the town in view of the festive season. Further, in order to facilitate the public, all shops are to remain open on all Sundays with effect from December 1, 2008, till January 4, 2009, the CTC directed.
‘Lodge name inclusion claims by November 25’ DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 11 (MExN): The Electoral Rolls in accordance with the Registration of Electoral Rules, 1960, has been prepared for 1-Dimapur I AC, 2-Dimapur III AC, 3-Dimapur III AC, 4-Ghaspani I AC and 5 Ghaspani-II AC. Informing this in a press release, Maongwati Aier, Electoral Registration Officer, Dimapur, has notified that a copy would be available for inspection at his office, including those of the respective administrative officers and booth level officers. The qualifying date for the preparation of the Electoral Roll is January 1, 2009. “Therefore, if, with reference to the said date, there be any claim for inclusion of name in the Roll or any objection to the inclusion of names or any objection to particulars in entry, it should be lodged on or before November 25, 2008, in Form-6, 7 or 8 as may be appropriate,” instructed the release. Every such claim or objection should either be presented in his office or to the concerned BLOs and area Administrative Officers so as to reach not later than the aforesaid date.
The release issued by POU (Administration) of NEPED, Vengota Nakro, expressed empathy with “innovative farmers like Pitoshe Chophi who successfully raised the crop but is unable to market the ‘fruit of his labour’,” and sought to assure the farmer that NEPED is still exploring markets to enable farmers to sell their Kiwis despite the inherent bottlenecks in the system. However, it stated that more than that, there were lessons to be learnt from him for which NEPED thanked the daily for bringing it in focus. At the same time, the release informed that a Team Member from NEPED would be contacting the farmer shortly for follow-up action. Nevertheless, NEPED sought to point out that it “only facilitates the farm-to-market process, as capacitating and empowering farmers with knowledge-based information would enable them to create their ‘own system’ in the absence of other sustainable alternatives.” Making its case through a pointing, it pointed to the Kiwi farmers from Phek district who have ventured out on their own and are marketing the fruit since 2006, “initially tentatively, but now with excellent returns” according to the release. Meanwhile, with regards to the promise given to the farmer by an officer from the Horticulture Department that NEPED would provide Rupees 1lakh to construct his water tank, the release clarified that it had neither any contact with this officer nor the money to pay the farmer.
BJP State President asked to apologise DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 11 (MExN): The President of the Nagaland State BJP, Ato Yepthomi, was today asked to immediately apologise to all DAN parties for his “anti-DAN activities.” While pointing out that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is one of the major partners of the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN), a press communiqué signed by the presidents of 5 districts alleged that the state president had deliberately indulged in anti-party activities and acted against the DAN government, in trying to snatch away the 2 MLAs of the BJP to support Cong (I) in forming government in the state. During the formation of DAN government, Ato Yepthomi, stated the communiqué, “tried several times conniving with Cong (I) and a faction of underground activist to pull out BJP MLAs from DAN by ignoring the agreement made amongst the DAN parties, but his mission failed as the two BJP MLAs stood firm with DAN.” While demanding immediate apology from the State BJP President, the signatories also stated that his treachery had caused shame and inconvenience to the BJP workers in the DAN ministry.

DIMAPUR TODAY faced a number of vehicular accidents, with three fatalities and a good number of passengers sustaining injuries within a span of 24 hours at Kukidolong on November 11. In the first incident, in what is suspected to be negligence on the part of the driver, a Dimapur-bound tourist bus from Imphal (Manipur Valley Travels (MVT) MN011365) turned turtle at Kukidolong. This left about 13 passengers injured. Two passengers are reported to be in a very serious condition and admitted at Civil Hospital Dimapur. The bus, popularly known as MVT Rajdhani was supposed to reach Dimapur on time. According to some eyewitness at the spot, the driver was said to be ‘busy on the mobile phone’ at the time of the mishap. Other passengers who survived without injuries were very much reluctant to talk to this correspondent, except grateful that “I am alive”. The injured passengers are said to be in the Civil Hospital and some private hospitals around Dimapur. The rest were said to have been released after ‘first aid’ was administered to them. Meanwhile, traffic police informed that unclaimed articles, found from the spot are with them and passengers or their relatives,
can come with ‘rightful documents’ to claim them. The driver is absconding at the time of filing this report. A case has been registered and investigation is on. In another incident, a tempo traveler (NL073585) traveling to Dimapur met with an accident near the Iron Bridge at Kukidolong. The vehicle, with six occupants including the driver, fell into the river injuring all of them critically. A party of 42 Assam Rifles passing by immediately swung into action and rescued the men. The men of 42 AR rescued the injured with help from some civilians. A message was transmitted to Medziphema where additional forces were mustered and a column was activated. The Medziphema police station was also given information about the accident. Out of the six injured victims, one expired at the spot itself while the rest were evacuated in a critical condition to Dimapur Civil Hospital in a joint effort of the AR, police and civil administration. Also, according to a delayed report, an autorickshaw (NL07F3585) at around 7:20 am also met with an accident. The autorickshaw was reportedly ‘knocked down’ by a Maruti Alto. One passenger of the autorickshaw died on the spot while another died on the way to hospital. No further details could be made available.
Corrigendum The CLP meeting on November 18 is to be held at the residence of Tokheho Yepthomi and not as rendered on the November 11 issue. Inconvenience caused due to the error is deeply regretted.

What I think of and what I want to say to our people Nagas Maj. Z.D.Akho

The Morung Express
In today’s Naga underground crises, it is not only that they have differences because they are in different groups it is also that there are sharp differences among the higher ups within a single group too. It is bound to happen because the government they run is in such a mess and some other reasons we all know. But, for those opportunist leaders though they may have big differences they would never speak out what they think would be best for the Nagas if it is against their bosses instead they would choose to remain silent and try their best to be loyal to their group as long as they remain in the post of such as a kilonser. When they are degraded or removed, they endlessly go on gossiping, criticizing and opposing their very own government. This clearly shows us that they are not for the people but for their own selfish interest. I am afraid if there are such leaders among the civil societies too. In the present days, even in the election/selection of the leaders of the civil societies, the role of underground are very much there. Not only that, there are grouping, camping and policies of some people behind the elected leaders to prop them up. In that way, those leaders are bound to work in adjustment with the interest of those who supported them, in most cases leaving aside the interest of the whole of Nagas. I think, for the national workers and the social workers, a high post which you hold is not an achievement of yours. It is an opportunity you got to work for the people and to prove yourself who you are. It will be wrong if you work to remain in the post or becoming a leader for the sake of the love of a leader’s title instead of speaking and standing in the truth, the truth for what is the need of the hour for the Nagas. How much you braved and faced, how much you sacrificed, suffered and stood for the people shall be accounted to your achievement and these are that
you are to be proud of. Another factor that weakens and creates division among the U.G groups is because of the state politicians, contractors, business men etc. The underground men are vulnerable from such people’s baits because of the love of powers, pleasure life and money. They and the underground help one another in various ways but none of these for the benefit of the Naga people. Those people have no stand and they support any group for their own gains and do not bother about what is right or wrong and therefore, create confusion and increase further division of the Nagas. It is funny that today, the pro-Indian Naga politicians become the most active fellows in the IndoNaga politics too. When times were bad they refused to fight for the people, they refused to suffer with the people and they even avoided associating with the Freedom Fighters. Again, today, when Cease-Fire is there between GoI and U.G groups, those politicians directly mingled with U.G groups and take side with different groups. When all are working hard to bring the Nagas together, those politicians are busy seeking favor and support from different groups, each for his own gains and are in many ways responsible for blocking the U.G groups to reconcile and come together. How much do you want to play with the lives of the Nagas? Do you think our Nagas’ blood are as cheap as you can play with or as cheap as color in the color Holi festival? Anybody is free to play politics, anybody is free to do business or anybody is free to do what he/she wishes but let no one’s self interest mess up with the politics of Naga National Movement because it is precious. It involves the blood and tears and the lives of the Naga people. If anybody is afraid, if anybody is tired or think otherwise he/ she can leave it to us and go on eating and drinking and enjoy life, only do not play with the lives of the Nagas. Concluded

dynamic private sector will eventually allow us to return to a 9% growth trajectory," Singh said. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) last month said the Indian economy may grow at 7.5% in the current fiscal year as opposed to 9% in 2007-08. The rate in 2008-09 would be the weakest since 2005. Separately, in an interaction to reporters on board his aircraft, the Prime Minister said that Qatar may invest US$5bn in energy and fertiliser projects in India. The Prime Minister said he had discussed with the Qatari leadership the modalities of setting up a US$5bn fund dedicated for investments in India. "We discussed the modalities of Qatar investing about US$5bn in India. In the next 2-3 months, we will work out modalities, and identify projects in the area of energy, power, fertiliser and related activities," he said. On November 8, India and Oman signed an agreement, to set up a US$100mn joint investment fund for financing projects in telecom, infrastructure, utilities, health and urban infrastructure.
"The India-Oman Joint Investment Fund, with an equal contribution from each side, would eventually go up to US$1.5bn," the Prime Minister said. From Qatar, India is keen to source a minimum of 2.5mn tons of additional liquefied natural gas (LNG) and buying fertilisers on a long-term contract. "We also discussed the possibilities of Qatar supplying fertilisers either investments in plants in India or expanding production of fertiliser plants in Qatar with assured buyback in India. And it was agreed the two countries will explore possibilities,” he said. The Prime Minister said that Qatar has agreed to consider selling more LNG to India in one or two years. “On my request and on the request of Petroleum Minister Murli Deora, the Government of Qatar has agreed to consider enhancing our allocation in the course of one or two years,” Dr. Singh said. India currently buys five million tons of LNG a year from RasGas of Qatar under a 25 year contract. Next year an additional 2.5mn tons of LNG will be available under the same long-term contract.

MUMBAI, NOVEMBER 11 (AGENCIES): Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on Monday asked Gulf nations to invest their surplus funds in India's infrastructure sector, to help the country register a strong growth rate of 9%. India needs US$500bn in infrastructure investments in the next five years. "The present international economic and financial situation has clouded some of the prospects of growth in near term. I am, however, confident that the long term outlook for our economy remains strong and robust," Singh said while he addressing the Indian community in Doha. Goldman Sachs on Monday cut Indian economy's growth projection to 6.7% in 2008-09 from the earlier projection of 7.5%.The investment needs of a large emerging economy like India and the large financial surpluses of an energy rich nation like Qatar can be married together to create a win-win situation, Dr. Singh said. MP3 player headphones interfere with pacemakers, a new study finds
The dangers of headphones now extend beyond accidentally walking into traffic: a new report released today suggests that pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) may react negatively to the magnets inside MP3player headphones. After testing eight different models of earbuds and clip-on headphones, Harvard researchers determined that patients with pacemakers and ICDs should keep headphones at least 1.2 inches away from the device. The magnets inside the headphones send false signals to the heart that may result in skipped beats or, in the case of ICDs: shutdown. According to the Washington Post, "15 percent of patients with pacemakers and 30 percent of those with defibrillators had a response to the magnets." Keep in mind these problems arise from internal magnets, so the danger exists even when the MP3 player is not operating. Some doctors are saying that this news sounds far more ominous than it is. Dr. Spencer Rosero, an associate professor of medicine in the electrophysiology unit at the University of Rochester Medical Center, told the Post that while this infor-
formally announced the launch of its Green IT Initiative. The first meeting of the initiative recently took place in Bangalore to discuss and brainstorm NASSCOM’s strategy on Green IT. NASSCOM’s Green IT Strategy is broadly aligned along the following three vectors, and covers the following aspects: Make IT Green: Adoption by industry of Green technologies and practices including Green buildings, Green computing infrastructure e.g. energy efficient data centers, power efficient computers, sharing infrastructure e.g. shared data centres , addressing issues like e-waste management. Make Green Happen Through IT: Deploy IT solutions which help firms become Green including like Cloud Computing, video-conferencing, web-conferencing, motion and heat detection sensors etc Make Green warriors: Encourage the over 2 million employees of the IT-BPO industry to adopt a Green life-style and thereby become change agents to catalyse transformation and create a sustainable impact in the society around themselves.

Bodo militants masterminded Assam serial bombings: Police
GUWAHATI, NOVEMBER 11 (AGENCIES): Twelve days after the wave of bombings in Assam that killed 83 people and wounded 300 more, police on Tuesday said evidence suggests the involvement of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) in triggering the explosions, rejecting earlier theories of Islamist terror groups being directly involved in the attacks. Police and officials of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the serial bombings of Oct 30 claim to have almost reached the final stage of the investigations with all evidences pointing towards the NDFB, in a ceasefire with New Delhi since 2005. The sequence of events before and after the explosions in Guwahati (three blasts), Kokrajhar, Barpeta, and Bongaigaon are sensational. Investigators have found that three Maruti cars used in the Guwahati bombings were all purchased by NDFB cadres, while a motorbike used in the Bongaigaon blast was also owned by a NDFB rebel. No police official, however, would like to
come on record. According to investigators, plans for executing the serial blasts were chalked out by NDFB chairman Ranjan Daimary, believed to be based in Bangladesh. Daimary was apparently unhappy over the slow progress of the peace talks with New Delhi and did the planning with the support of the Harkat-ul-Jihad-eIslami (HuJI). The outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) had a minimal role in the blasts, officials said. “The NDFB masterminded the bombings with the ULFA giving a helping hand to the terror strike with support from the HuJI. But it was the NDFB that is primarily responsible,” a police official said, requesting not to be named. The run up to the blasts: Oct 28: The three vehicles used for the blasts in Guwahati arrived here from different locations and were parked at a house in the Gorchuk area, in the city’s outskirts. Oct 29: All the three vehicles were packed with explosives in the same place. Oct 30: The three cars were driven to the allotted parking lots in the city for the big terror strike. One of the cars
was driven by a man named Thumri Narzary, believed to be a NDFB cadre. Police are now in possession of the call list of Thumri’s mobile phone and the location from where he called based on mobile tower positions. After parking the car at the chief judicial magistrate’s court, Thumri left Guwahati for an unknown location. Thumri’s mobile phone was later tracked at Rangia, 70 km from Guwahati, and then in Kokrajhar. After Kokrajhar, Thumri’s mobile phone could not be tracked. The owners of the three cars used for bombings were traced to Baksa district in western Assam. The NDFB’s designated camp is located in Baksa. Police and security forces have cordoned off the NDFB’s camp since Monday night, suspecting some of the kingpins of the blasts could be hiding inside the barracks. The NDFB has denied any involvement in the explosions and has blamed the government for trying to derail the peace process. Authorities are now contemplating an end to the three-yearold ceasefire with the NDFB after the investigations.
Assam govt soft on terror, says AGP NEW DELHI, NOVEMBER 11 (PTI): In the wake of the Assam serial blasts, the Asom Gana Parishad on Tuesday accused the Congress government in the state of being “soft and casual” towards terrorism and claimed that 600 bombs were exploded during its tenure. “The Tarun Gogoi government is soft and casual towards terrorism and behaving in an irresponsible manner. There is no efforts to curb the growing violence in the state and to foil the designs of ISI to destabilise India,” AGP President Chandra Mohan Patowary said here. Patowary, who is currently in Delhi, claimed during the tenure of the Congress government, more than 600 bombs were exploded in Assam, of which 19 were triggered at Ganeshguri -- located at 200 meters away from the Dispur capital complex. “The October 30 serial
blasts incident has to be seen in the context of national security. The failure of the Congress government to highlight this issue has not only resulted in a threat to the indigenous people of Assam but also to the territorial integrity of the country,” he said. The AGP president said his party firmly believed that Assam was not safe in the hands of the present Congress-led government in the state. “We, therefore, demand the immediate dismissal of the Gogoi government in the greater interest of the state as well as to save the territorial integrity, national security and sovereignty of the country,” he said. Asked about the possibility of AGP having an alliance with the BJP, Patowary said discussion was still going on and a final decision would be taken very soon. “We will meet several leaders, including L K Advani in the next two-three days,” he said.
5 Arunachal ‘never officially demarcated’: China Wednesday
12 November 2008
BEIJING, NOVEMBER 11 (PTI): China on Tuesday took a hard stand on the Arunachal Pradesh issue indicating it is not likely to change its stand for the sake of reaching a settlement over border demarcation. The Chinese foreign ministry challenged a statement made by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee saying that Arunachal was an integral part of India. "We deeply regret the Indian side's remarks that take no regard of the historical facts. China and India have never officially settled demarcation of borders, and China's stance on the eastern section of China-India borders is consistent and clear-cut," foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang at a press conference on Tuesday. Qin's statement is in direct contrast with the views of Indian officials including foreign secretary Shiv Shankar Menon, who have maintained that the issue of Tawang, leave aside the whole of Arunachal Pradesh, is out of the range of border negotiations. The spokesman was replying to a question by the
official Xinhua news agency seeking his reaction to Mukherjee's statement. This makes it different from a situation where an official spokesperson is responding to a query from a foreign journalist. It is one of the strongest statements to emanate from China on the issue since India raised objection to the former Chinese foreign minister India strongly protested against an oblique reference to it by former Chinese foreign minister Li Zhaoxing at an international forum in early 2007. With the Chinese government challenging Mukherjee's stance on Arunachal, it is apparent that years of effort at resolving the border problem has come under a cloud. Qin said both the present and past governments in China have never recognized the "illegal" McMahon Line, Qin said. The Indian side know this very well, he said. At the same time, China is willing to find a solution that is fair, reasonable and acceptable to both sides with the help of peaceful and friendly negotiations conducted in a spirit of mutual understanding and adjust-
Dimapur
ment, he said. Mukherjee, who was visiting a 400-year old monastery in Tawang in Arunachal, said on Saturday that China was "fully aware" that the state is an integral part of India. China had earlier claimed Tawang on the plea that it is the birth place of the sixth Dalai Lama before changing its stance to demand the whole of Arunachal Pradesh. "China is often making claims on Arunachal Pradesh, but Arunachal Pradesh has a special place in our heart," Mukherjee said. "People of Arunachal Pradesh regularly elect two representatives to the Lok Sabha and there is an elected state assembly carrying out the responsibility of administration like any of other 27 states. The question of parting company of Arunachal or any of its part does not arise," he said. The external affairs minister spoke nearly the same words as the Chinese foreign ministry spokesman when he said that both countries were keen to find a "fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable" solution to the boundary question.

“Significantly, they have been carrying on a democratic poll boycott campaign in Srinagar and the Election Commission has also signaled that voting in elections was as much a democratic right of the people as the right not to vote. Ironically, the government of India have come down with heavy hands against the proindependence Kashmir leaders and arrested more than 100, for giving a call for boycott of assembly elections”. Some of the senior leaders arrested are Mahammad Yasin Malik, Chairman, JammuKashmir Liberation Front, Maulana Showkat, Jamaat Al Aadees, Shabir Ahmed Shah, President Democratic Freedom Party, Naim Khan, President, National Front,
Ashraf Sarahi, General Secretary, Hurriyat (Geelani), Dr. Hubbi, Vice President, People’s Party (Ghani Lone’s party), Somji, Muslim Conference and Ayeshe Indrabi, women’s organization. The NSCN (IM) stated that these leaders are detained in different jails in Jammu, in total violation of democratic spirit. Yasin Malik was arrested under the Public Safety Act, and slapped with various charges including “inciting youth against army during the Safre-Azadi” and “going on hunger strike (following Gandhain methods)”, it stated while pointing out that it was “terrifying to observe that the independence movement in Jammu & Kashmir has been countered with deceit and betrayal”. All the parties, JKLF and
Hurriyat support the peace process but have the common demand that Kashmiri people must be included in the talks on the future of the Kashmiris and the dispute cannot be settled between India and Pakistan alone, the NSCN (IM) reasoned. “They are also raising objection to the inclusion of political parties in the peace process, particularly those parties that do not even acknowledge the political status of Kashmir as a disputed territory”. The NSCN (IM) stated that as part of his peaceful campaign, Yasin of JKLF has declared ceasefire since 1994 and has been mobilizing from village to village getting signatures in support of Kashmir independence movement that must be decided by the Kashmir people.
Reconciliation Soccer: A new threshold From page 1
Also, deputy kilonser of the “GPRN/NSCN” Wangtin Konyak praised the initiative saying it was a way of showing oneness for a cause, to the gathered public. He said the Naga civil society playing also communicated that the Naga issue is a collective cause. While expressing doubt over his ability to actually get down and play, Wangtin confirmed that he would be there to support the process by wearing a soccer jersey. Meanwhile, Rev. Dr. Wati Aier disclosed that widows and children who had lost fathers as a result of the factional clashes would also be involved in the coming soccer match in Dimapur. He remained tight lipped on the nature of their involvement though. The highlight of the match is expected to be
the ‘United National Choir’, reportedly a choir of 50 to 60 underground workers of the FGN, NSCN (IM) and GPRN/NSCN (including women cadres), who will be performing two songs on Naga reconciliation. “We have passed the crossroad” says the FNR convener, adding that the Naga political process had also passed the first station beyond the crossroads and there was no going back now. Rev. Dr. Wati has appealed to the Naga people to understand that it is the little things that make a difference and he has sought to assure that progress was being made and healing has begun. What is now needed is for the people to be supportive, he said and get involved in the reconciliation process. “Reconciliation is no one’s monopoly. We all have a part to make
the reconciliation a success” the forum’s convener said. The people could start with the symbolic act of putting up white flags as a show of support for the Naga Reconciliation process, he added. Meanwhile, the Dimapur Naga Students’ Union calls upon all the denizens of Dimapur to witness the 2nd Reconciliation Soccer match to be played between the Naga “political group” (factions) versus Naga civil society. A press note issued from the DNSU urged all to be a part of the ongoing Naga reconciliation and by 12:00 noon on November 13, at DDSC stadium, be there. The DNSU further requests all the educational institutions in and around Dimapur to send their students of class VIII and above, in their uniforms to witness the said soccer match.
Innocent Lives Dammed by Dam

The denial of love and care of her mother to all her brothers and sisters is the utmost concern she had. Yet, the threat of the dam is the paramount issue right now, Sarita said. There are reports of a curfew-like situation in the region right now. The BSF has warned the dam-affected villagers not to venture out after 5 pm and the road leading to Louphong village (the dam site) is blocked by the “progressive company” (one of the companies involved in the construction of the dam), with a truckload of soil dumped in the middle of the road. The problem and hardship of the affected people has increased manifold as they cannot go to their fields to harvest their crops. Threats and intimidation by military personnel to the leaders and affected people has intensified. All these were shared by a group of affected people who came over to see Lungmila and be with her relatives.
For Lungmila, at stake is her home, forest, fields and all. She must have been really concerned and disturbed and has rightly participated in the November 3, peaceful and democratic rally. Now, she has lost every other thing she had, except an unconscious and immobile breathing body accompanied by shocking and grieving loved ones by its side. Mapithel dam has claimed its first victim. It is a dam constructed at the cost of many poor and hardworking subsistence farmers’ livelihood. The affected peoples’ organisations and individuals have vowed to continue their legitimate struggle for justice. They need the support and help from all responsible organisations and individual who believe in democracy and policy that addresses the core concerns of people. Many organisations and individuals have demanded a stop to the marauding developmental programme in the guise of a dam. The choice is simple – between life and a dam.

Accordingly, reversion and detachment of teachers are strongly recommended. Secondly, it is felt that the fixing six teachers for a primary school should be reconsidered. This is because all primary schools do not have equal number of classes. Some schools are only upto class 2, some up to Classc4 and stills others upto class 4 with additional sections and so on. In view of these differences, the seminar recommended that a primary school upto class 4 without sections should have eight teachers (inclusive of the head teacher) with one teacher each in English, Hindi and Science (or Maths). The number of teachers many be less or more, depending on the number of classes and sections. Selection should be permissible only when a class crosses 40 students, the seminar suggested.
Prices of essential goods skyrocket following blockade IMPHAL, NOVEMBER 11 (UNI): More than a hundred trucks are stranded on the Manipur-Nagaland border at Mao following an economic blockade on National Highway 39, imposed by the Senapati District Students’ Association (SDSA) from November 2 to demand repair of the Highway. Earlier, on humanitarian grounds, the SDSA had allowed 200 trucks stranded on the High-
way to proceed to Imphal. The blockade supporters have disrupted the entry of all trucks into the state. Passenger vehicles were allowed to move freely. However, the vehicles were being checked thoroughly to see if any goods were taken for commercial purposes. The oil stocks were getting depleted and fearing non-availability of petroleum products panic buying was being witnessed
today. Prices of all essential items had also increased manifold. Officials said state Works Minister K Ranjit, Education Minister L Jayenta and MLA K Raina had discussed the matter with the student leaders and work was on to repair the highway. The transporters of the state have also supported the blockade demanding repair of the Highway.

A Break from the Past
T
here is a Russian proverb which says: “Dwell on the past and you’ll lose an eye; forget the past and you’ll lose both eyes.” This insight possibly best illustrates the dilemma that confronts the choices we make when it comes to engaging our past. It is quite evident that that we can either choose to address our history – no matter how pleasant or unpleasant it may be – in a healthy and positive way, or we can choose to pretend to forget it and by denying it, we unwittingly allow ourselves to be taken further away from the center of our being. In the final analysis, the most fundamental question at hand is, what do we do with our history; and how do we address it in a manner that will allow us to build a future of compassion and respect for one another? Indeed the task of addressing our history is a painful task; but not to address it would only cause more pain and distortion of our humanity. Its no wonder that people of great faith have stated that “The struggle of people against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting.” Therefore no human has the moral authority to say ‘Let bygones be bygones,’ after all common experience indicates that the past, far from disappearing or being forgotten, is embarrassingly persistent and will return and haunt us unless it has been dealt with adequately. Archbishop Tutu reminds us that unless we look the beast in the eye we will find that it returns to hold us hostage. There is no doubt in my mind that we must begin to address the legacy of our history and create space to affirm and celebrate its positiveness while also acknowledging and correcting where it has gone wrong. It is therefore essential to address the burdens of our history in a meaningful and just manner. Hence, the questions of confession, apology, self-criticism and transformation should be defined in individual and collective terms with a sense of purpose, responsibility, dignity and compassion. Therefore, for the sake of the Naga future, the present Naga Reconciliation process must be given an opportunity to enable the Nagas to discern and reflect upon historical misgivings and to address them in a forward looking direction, so that a shared future can be build upon a common vision. The journey towards reconciliation is process that does not happen in a linear fashion; in fact change takes place in a spiral manner – this means that the process moves forward in a to-and-fro motion. This technical aspect of the process is crucial for public understanding because, inability to grasp this reality will only dampen and slow down the process. It is here that the media, public and educational institutions take an active role in creating public awareness and in providing the democratic space for people to bring into public expression the issues that are fundamental towards the question of reconciliation. While it is essential that these public institutions raise critical and crucial questions around reconciliation, it is equally important that they also help the public in understanding that the process involves both a backward and forward movement; but one that will eventually reach its objective as long as there is public participation and sincerity to the process. While the principal outcome of the reconciliation process depends on the willingness and sincerity of the core parties involved; the sustainability of the reconciliation process itself is largely dependent on the forms of intervention made by public institutions and the positions they take in enabling the parties and the process to move forward. National Reconciliation is both an individual as well as a collective responsibility. Reconciliation is both an end as well as a means. And the process to address the burdens of our history requires courage and political will with a vision for a shared and respectful future, while making space for God to change hearts because the process of transformation is not reasonable – it needs something more than reason to evoke it – it needs grace, grace that comes from our Creator.

The Financial Abyss
T
he present and future stages of global financial unraveling seem to be essentially as follows. (1) With the bursting of the credit bubble (massive over-borrowing), the real-estate market collapses, the banks collapse, and the stock market collapses. (2) Therefore credit dries up everywhere. Businesses cannot operate without credit. (3) Businesses stop making and selling products, so there is high unemployment everywhere. (4) The final result is that without adequate income from employment, people must live on their savings (or pensions or welfare), or try to live off the land, separating themselves from the global economy. There are further matters to consider. For example, what is the risk of currency collapse, i.e. a country’s money becoming worthless vis-à-vis other currencies, so that importing of goods and materials becomes impossible? After all, that is exactly what happened in many countries over the last few decades. Perhaps that risk will not be as great as one might imagine. The present financial problem is global, not national. Every country will be hit badly, whereas currency devaluation is always a “relative” matter, a matter of one currency sinking versus another, not an “absolute” one. (Nevertheless, currency devaluation is obviously based on a type of credit crisis, as is the global financial problem.) There is greater risk of currency devaluation for small countries that have large debts and are highly dependent on imports. In any case, switching one’s savings to a safer currency --- and a morereputable bank --- would be a good move. Will importing and exporting stop? I.e., will “globalization” slow down? Yes, quite likely, because of the lack of credit and the failures of businesses, combined with high costs of fuel for manufacture and transportation. What will happen to money in its various forms? It is generally agreed that one should first get rid of all personal debts, which will otherwise soon become unpayable. It is also agreed that investing in the stock market is hazardous. In addition, there is the obvious danger of keeping money in banks. In spite of all claims to the contrary, it is highly unlikely that governments or the World Bank will be able to come to the rescue if there is a run on the world’s half-dozen largest banks. The only money, if any, that will be protected will be plain cash, perhaps kept in a safe in one’s own home. Cash was also important during the Great Depression of the 1930s; those who had cash could buy anything, quite cheaply. The comparison between the Great Depression and the present crisis should not be carried very far, though. The present problem is much bigger, with more variables, and with a vastly greater amount of debts than in the 1930s. Also, the stock market is far more complex than in those days, and stockbrokers have enjoyed inventing many esoteric “derivatives.” Inflation and deflation, so called, are a curious question: Will prices rise or fall in the future? It seems that the first general pattern will be that of increasing prices, simply because goods will be scarce. Real estate may be the biggest exception, since houses are already vastly overpriced. A more accurate term than “inflation” would be “stagflation”: higher prices within a stagnant economy. Nevertheless, there will come a day when “consumers” are utterly lacking in the money that will allow them to “consume,” and then prices will crash. Who will pay for the entire mess? The banks collapse, the governments utter cries of woe and spend large amounts of public money to make up for the losses, and the middle-class taxpayers have to rectify the problem of that dwindling public money. The process is a simple shell game: 1, 2, 3. The executives at the top are unlikely to suffer. In addition, there is something hypocritical in the fact that governments are shedding tears over these troubles. After all, both governments and businesses should have seen what was coming --- and probably did so. Instead of preventing the problem, they have created a new feudalism: the very rich and the very poor. And all of the above is only the blip before the bang.

How we fuel Africa’s bloodiest war What is rarely mentioned is the great global heist of Congo’s resources
Congolese government forces man the front line north of the village of Kibati, north of Goma, eastern Congo, Sunday November 9, where a truck carrying goods from the rebel controlled north stopped to fix a tyre. Fighting between rebels and the government has left tens of thousands of refugees desperate for international aid. (AP Photo)
T
he deadliest war since Adolf Hitler marched across Europe is starting again – and you are almost certainly carrying a bloodsoaked chunk of the slaughter in your pocket. When we glance at the holocaust in Congo, with 5.4 million dead, the clichés of Africa reporting tumble out: this is a "tribal conflict" in "the Heart of Darkness". It isn't. The United Nations investigation found it was a war led by "armies of business" to seize the metals that make our 21st-century society zing and bling. The war in Congo is a war about you. Every day I think about the people I met in the war zones of eastern Congo when I reported from there. The wards were filled with women who had been gang-raped by the militias and shot in the vagina. The battalions of child soldiers – drugged, dazed 13-year-olds who had been made to kill members of their own families so they couldn't try to escape and go home. But oddly, as I watch the war starting again on CNN, I find myself thinking about a woman I met who had, by Congolese standards, not suffered in extremis. I was driving back to Goma from a diamond mine one day when my car got a puncture. As I waited for it to be fixed, I stood by the roadside and watched the great trails of women who stagger along every road in eastern Congo, carrying all their belongings on their backs in mighty crippling heaps. I stopped a 27 -year-old woman called Marie-Jean Bisimwa, who had four little children toddling along beside her. She told me she was lucky. Yes, her village
had been burned out. Yes, she had lost her husband somewhere in the chaos. Yes, her sister had been raped and gone insane. But she and her kids were alive. I gave her a lift, and it was only after a few hours of chat along on cratered roads that I noticed there was something strange about Marie-Jean's children. They were slumped forward, their gazes fixed in front of them. They didn't look around, or speak, or smile. "I haven't ever been able to feed them," she said. "Because of the war." Their brains hadn't developed; they never would now. "Will they get better?" she asked. I left her in a village on the outskirts of Goma, and her kids stumbled after her, expressionless. There are two stories about how this war began – the official story, and the true story. The official story is that after the Rwandan genocide, the Hutu mass murderers fled across the border into Congo. The Rwandan government chased after them. But it's a lie. How do we know? The Rwandan government didn't go to where the Hutu genocidaires were, at least not at first. They went to where Congo's natural resources were – and began to pillage them. They even told their troops to work with any Hutus they came across. Congo is the richest country in the world for gold, diamonds, coltan, cassiterite, and more. Everybody wanted a slice – so six other countries invaded. These resources were not being stolen to for use in Africa. They were seized so they could be sold on to us. The more we
bought, the more the invaders stole – and slaughtered. The rise of mobile phones caused a surge in deaths, because the coltan they contain is found primarily in Congo. The UN named the international corporations it believed were involved: Anglo-America, Standard Chartered Bank, De Beers and more than 100 others. (They all deny the charges.) But instead of stopping these corporations, our governments demanded that the UN stop criticising them. There were times when the fighting flagged. In 2003, a peace deal was finally brokered by the UN and the international armies withdrew. Many continued to work via proxy militias – but the carnage waned somewhat. Until now. As with the first war, there is a cover-story, and the truth. A Congolese militia leader called Laurent Nkunda – backed by Rwanda – claims he needs to protect the local Tutsi population from the same Hutu genocidaires who have been hiding out in the jungles of eastern Congo since 1994. That's why he is seizing Congolese military bases and is poised to march on Goma. It is a lie. François Grignon, Africa Director of the International Crisis Group, tells me the truth: "Nkunda is being funded by Rwandan businessmen so they can retain control of the mines in North Kivu. This is the absolute core of the conflict. What we are seeing now is beneficiaries of the illegal war economy fighting to maintain their right to exploit." At the moment, Rwandan business interests make a fortune from the mines
they illegally seized during the war. The global coltan price has collapsed, so now they focus hungrily on cassiterite, which is used to make tin cans and other consumer disposables. As the war began to wane, they faced losing their control to the elected Congolese government – so they have given it another bloody kick-start. Yet the debate about Congo in the West – when it exists at all – focuses on our inability to provide a decent bandage, without mentioning that we are causing the wound. It's true the 17,000 UN forces in the country are abysmally failing to protect the civilian population, and urgently need to be super-charged. But it is even more important to stop fuelling the war in the first place by buying bloodsoaked natural resources. Nkunda only has enough guns and grenades to take on the Congolese army and the UN because we buy his loot. We need to prosecute the corporations buying them for abetting crimes against humanity, and introduce a global coltan-tax to pay for a substantial peacekeeping force. To get there, we need to build an international system that values the lives of black people more than it values profit. Somewhere out there – lost in the great global heist of Congo's resources – are Marie-Jean and her children, limping along the road once more, carrying everything they own on their backs. They will probably never use a coltan-filled mobile phone, a cassiterite-smelted can of beans, or a gold necklace – but they may yet die for one.
Hope lies in common sense politics Aruna Roy
A
series of state elections are declared, with a general election to follow. Democracy conjures up visions of masses of people waiting at the hem of a system. The ruling class, often views this mass of people with fear. Elections are accepted as a necessary evil, a popular mandate, a manifestation of uninformed choices. The argument that the vote is an establishment of a personal hegemony, of caste, myopic self interest masquerading as democracy, can also be turned against people like us, who have had privileged access to systems that should enable making informed choices. The truth is that we are all uniformly victims of one or the other paradigm. If the poor are denied access to decision making; the other half is blinded by self-interest not to see the writing on the wall. The stakes today are high, with profit vying for legitimacy with true democratic practice with the survival of the earth itself. Common sense politics, based on survival of the ordinary person has not been adequately acknowledged. People’s struggles have resulted in creative policies and decisions, and in legislations ensuring minimum needs. Our Constitution is the result of the largest people’s movement modern India has seen. The singular power of the vote to determine the texture of government has been invaluable, but equally limited. Ordinary people understand now that this power to question continues to exist between elections. People have
pushed legislation and policy to protect their democratic rights, just as much as economic necessities. The Right to Information law was defined initially by the rural poor as was the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. People understand the need for tools to demand transparency and accountability, to sift the chaff from the wheat of seemingly impregnable (and now fragile) economic arguments, track expenditure and guarantee their daily bread, unravel the roots of the violence and insecurity issues engulfing us all. Gandhiji’s talisman for evaluating policy through the prism of benefit to the last person (man), now needs to be redefined to ask -- did they decide? A democracy can only prosper if there are legitimate platforms where citizens can be heard. The challenges of exclusive agendas should be challenged by an inclusive form of democracy that guarantees every person a share in governance. In jargon we call this participatory decision-making. In terms of structures, there are Panchayats and local Municipalities, but have done little to truly empower themselves or the people. Simultaneously, the privileged seek their future in multinational companies and talk of corporate governance. Those who cannot, become civil servants whose destination may be the World Bank, IMF, or ADB. Politics has become synonymous with the dirty side of “local” governance. Yet we talk of the democratic power of the people. Genuine people’s empowerment is to call the bluff of these warped priorities.
This is the result of clear perceptions that come when all the cards are down, with no luxury of pretensions! Sushila’s statement in the Press Conference in 1996, when asked why she, barely literate, wanted the RTI law, cut through all ambiguities, when she answered: "When I send my son to the market with ten rupees, I ask for accounts when he returns. This government spends billions of rupees in our name; we want the accounts -- Hamara paisa, Hamara hisab.” A slogan that empowered us to struggle on, and continues to push us even today, as we struggle to get the RTI and the NREGA implemented by a system used to, and replete with spoils!! It is not just about poverty alleviation that the poor have an opinion that must be heard. In the kind of democratic choices: of big dams, SEZs, militarization, nuclear power, restraining democratic dissent, dealing with terror -- people have raised concerns about environmental damage and our collective political future, not just about economic or political displacement and pauperization. The unrestrained capitalist exploitation of nature, is bringing closer imminent, dangerous climate change; more threatening than a global Tsunami. Nature, unlike the poor cannot be quelled. Today, our insecurities threaten our existence. The voices of common sense are arbitrarily dismissed as anti-development. Given space and respect, they may offer some solutions. Hope lies in solutions based on common sense politics, and concerns about a shared world.

Let’s face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren’t invented in England or French fries in France . Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig. And why is it that writers write but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce and hammers don’t ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn’t the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? Doesn’t it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it? If teachers taught, why didn’t preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell? How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on. English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible. PS. - Why doesn’t ‘Buick’ rhyme with ‘quick’ You lovers of the English language might enjoy this .. There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is ‘UP.’ It’s easy to understand UP , meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP ? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report ? We call UP our friends. And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car. At other times the little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special. And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP ! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP , look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don’t give UP , you may wind UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP. When it doesn’t rain for awhile, things dry UP. One could go on and on, but I’ll wrap it UP , for now my time is UP , so.......... .. Time to shut UP.....!

AHMEDABAD, NOVEMBER 11 (AGENCIES): Spiritual guru Baba Ramdev, the man behind the yoga revolution in India, has come out in support of Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, who has been accused of involvement in the September 29 Malegaon blast. Calling her innocent, Baba Ramdev said he is with her. The Maharashtra Anti-Terror Squad arrested the Sadhvi after her bike was found to have been used in the Malegaon blast. The ATS is treating the Sadhvi as the main culprit on the basis of her telephonic conversation with one Ramji, who had allegedly planted the bomb in Malegaon.

Wednesday
NEW DELHI, NOVEMBER 11 (PTI): A Delhi court on Tuesday convicted three men for killing a local Congress leader and property dealer five years ago. Additional Sessions Judge S K Sarvaria held accused Sushil Pehalwan, Suresh Pehalwan and Dalip guilty under Section 302 for murder and other provisions of the IPC. Surender Gupta, 40, was shot at and stabbed near his house in South Extension here in 2003. He died in hospital. The court, however, acquitted another accused Lekhraj for want of evidence. The court is likely to pronounce the quantum of sentence against the three convicts on November 19. According to the prosecution, Sushil Pehalwan, Suresh Pehalwan and Dalip, who were armed, forced the victim to come out of his car near his house around noon on May 31 2003. Sushil first fired twice at the victim and later accused Suresh stabbed him nearly 16 times, inflicting fatal injuries, the prosecution had said. It had alleged that Dalip held the victim when he was being stabbed. The victim died within hours of his hospitalisation at AIIMS. The prosecution examined 26 persons, including three eye-witnesses. Two eye witnesses – Om Prakash Gupta and Narpat Singh – turned hostile, while the third Subodh, a former employee of the victim, supported the prosecution’s case.
Three Maoists gunned down in Chhattisgarh RAIPUR, NOVEMBER 11 (AGENCIES): Chhattisgarh police on Tuesday gunned down three guerrillas in the Maoist stronghold of Bastar. According to police, the gun battle began at the thickly forested hamlet of Kharka, 270 km south of this state capital, in Narayanpur district that forms part of the vast Bastar region. “The gun battle began when a combing squad of the district force was challenged by armed Maoists. Three rebels were killed on the spot,” Pawan Deo, deputy inspector general, police headquarters, told IANS. In another incident, a senior police official – Surguja Range Inspector General of Police BS Marawi – was injured late Monday when rebels opened fire on his convoy in Surguja district close to the Jharkhand border. He was rushed to a hospital in Ambikapur, the district headquarters of Surguja, where doctors said he was out of danger. Bastar region, which comprises the five districts of Narayanpur, Kanker, Bastar, Dantewada and Bijapur, has 12 assembly seats and goes to polls November 14 along with 39 more constituencies in the first phase. Round two of the elections will be held on November 20.
Manmohan Singh dismisses reports of Obama snub
ONBOARD PM’S SPECIAL AIRCRAFT, NOVEMBER 11 (AGENCIES): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has made light of reports that US President-elect Barack Obama ignored India while making telephone calls to leaders of various countries after his election to America’s top office. “No, this is not true... President Obama wanted to talk to me day before yesterday (November 8) (but) we could not establish contact because the time that was suggested was too short for me (to establish contact). Since then, I have been travelling... as soon as I go back (we will try to establish contact),” Singh said when asked if the newly elected US
President had ignored India by not calling him. Singh was talking to reporters late last night on way back to New Delhi from his maiden three-day visit to the energy rich Gulf region. Obama had called fifteen world leaders including Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari after being elected US President. As Singh did not get any call from Obama, there were suggestions that the next US President was ignoring India. Singh said Obama had written to him a “very warm” letter even before he was elected President. “I had myself written a warm letter to him,” he said. Singh was hopeful that Indo-US ties under Obama will further be strengthened.

JAGDALPUR, NOVEMBER 11 (AGENCIES): The sprawling region of Bastar holds the key to who will form the next government in Chhattisgarh. Can the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) repeat the Bastar performance of the 2003 elections or will the Congress pull off a victory? This is the question dominating political discussions in Chhattisgarh. The battle for Chhattisgarh’s southern Bastar region with 12 seats, including 11 reserved for Scheduled Tribes, has reached a climax with just days left for the first phase of elections to pick a 90-member assembly. The Congress is desperate to regain its traditional base in the region, which has witnessed bloody attacks by Maoist guerrillas since 2004, leaving about 1,100 people, including 726 civilians, dead. The BJP pulled off a stunning performance in Bastar in the state’s maiden elections in November 2003, grabbing nine out of 12 seats. This time the BJP and the Congress are locked in a close contest. In addition,

Notwithstanding the statistics, political parties, however, appear to have given scanty attention towards giving tickets to women. No political parties have fielded more than ten percent women candidates. Congress and Bahujan Samaj Party fielded 10 women candidates each, while BJP gave tickets to nine contenders. The tickets distributed to women candidates, irrespective of party, stand nowhere to the figure of 33 per cent reservation of seats for women.

Rahul Gandhi kicks off Congress campaign in Chhattisgarh BHILAI/RAIPUR, NOVEMBER 11 (ANI): Kicking off the Congress Party's campaign in poll-bound Chhattisgarh on Monday, party general secretary Rahul Gandhi urged the people to vote the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) out of power. Chhattisgarh is among the six states headed for staggered assembly polls in November-December this year. The six state elections will test the political temperature in India before a general election in early 2009. Congress has been losing ground to the BJP in state elections over the past year. The BJP is in power in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, and its performance is offering the Congress a chance to regain some political ground. Incumbent governments in India often do badly in elections. "Here the most important thing is that we elect such a government that implements programmes of the federal government. And properly utilizes the funds allocated by the federal government and particularly help our poor brothers and sisters. Present state government is of corrupt people and not of common man," Gandhi told a public rally in Bhilai. Election to the Chhattisgarh assembly would be in two phases. For the first phase, 39 assembly seats from 10 districts will vote on November 14. The second phase will witness polls for 51 seats from eight districts on November 20 and the votes will be counted on December 8. Chhattisgarh, one of the states most hit by a Maoist insurgency, could test whether voters punish Congress on what many Indians see as lax government security policies.
IIMs, IITs fail to spend money meant for OBCs
NEW DELHI, NOVEMBER 11 (CNN-IBN): Union Minister for Human Resource Development Arjun Singh is upset that central institutions especially the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are not using the funds released to build new infrastructure for the Other Backward Castes (OBCs). In fact, the IIMs haven’t spent even a single penny from the fund released to them. “The nation cannot afford to allow these resources and time to be wasted,” Arjun Singh told a conference of Vice Chancellors of the Central Universities and the Directors of Central Technical Institutions in New Delhi
on Monday. He also said that the massive expansion plan to accommodate OBC students or otherwise is a top priority of the government. There has been a substantial jump in the allocation of funds for higher education institutes, both for expansion related to implementing quotas and for opening new institutes to be implemented from the current academic year. In the first installment of money for three year expansion plan, central universities have used 59 per cent of the Rs 379 crore released by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The technical institutes have been able to spend just Rs 260 crore of the Rs 1647 crore allocated for this year.
The IITs have sped 18 per cent, National Institutes of Technology 16 per cent and IIMs have not been able to spend a penny. “If you want to spend Rs 100 lakh you must have approved projects of Rs 200-250 lakh if the amount has to be spent especially for building and things which take a longer time,” Higher Education Secretary RP Agrawal said in the conference. Now, the HRD Ministry has made it very clear that it will not release any funds for the expansion plans if the allocations are underutilised. The institutes have also been asked to furnish financial statements and annual reports to be placed before Parliament in the coming session.

Gender barriers falling: Now, women to man India-Pak border
HOSHIARPUR (PUNJAB), NOVEMBER 11 (AGENCIES): With women getting ready for patrol duty, gender barriers are falling on the international border between India and Pakistan. The 36-week training of the first batch of about 200 out of the 612 women recruits, all between 18 and 22 years of age, started at the Border Security Force’s (BSF) training camp at Kharkan village, 15 km from here, Monday. Classes for the remaining recruits will start later. The women, 45 from West Bengal and the rest from Punjab, were
gung-ho about not just the training programme but even postings in inhospitable terrain along the border where the BSF is stationed. “This is a very happy moment for me. This is an active job and will give job security to me and my family,” Sandeep Ghumman, a graduate, said. “Both my parents are in the police. The job with BSF should be interesting,” added another recruit, Kiranbir Kaur. Taking pride in her new uniform, recruit Jyotibala of Punjab’s border district of Gurdaspur said: “I always wanted to serve my motherland. My dream has come true.”
The women will primarily be used along the 553 km international border between India and Pakistan, which has 300 gates along the electrified barbed wire fencing in Punjab. “They will mainly be used to frisk women from villages along the international border who have to cross the fencing to cultivate land,” BSF’s Punjab Frontier Inspector General of Police (IGP) Himmat Singh said here. The women, instructed by two women from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), will be trained in weapons and explosives
handling, physical training, drill, map reading, field craft, border management and given knowledge about all major laws including Indian Penal Code (IPC), customs, passport and immigration, he said. The fencing, erected by India in the early 1990s to curb militants from entering Punjab from the Pakistan side, is about 500 metres to one kilometre from the international border inside Indian territory. This had placed fields of many farmers of border villages beyond the fence. The farmers are allowed to go beyond the fence only for a
few hours everyday (from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm) to cultivate their land. They are frisked every time. The BSF, over the years, had been facing problems in frisking women accompanying farmers across the fence. Frisking is essential as a lot of smuggling, particularly of drugs, takes place at the border, BSF officials said. Over 8,500 women had applied for the 685 posts of women guards with the BSF June this year. Of these, nearly 2,500 were shortlisted and underwent physical tests as well as screening and a medical examination before being selected.
Farmers suicides in India not due to Bt cotton: IFPRI
NEW DELHI, NOVEMBER 11 (PTI): The increase in the number of suicides among farmers in the country cannot be attributed to the introduction of genetically modified (GM) crops like Bt cotton, a US think-tank has said in a report. “Our analysis clearly shows that Bt cotton is not a necessary or a sufficient condition for the occurrence of farmer suicide. Therefore, it should not be blamed for the resurgence of farmer suicides in the field,” a study by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) said. The finding of the report Wayside vendors display posters and pictures of celebrities for sale in Jammu, November 10.(AP Photo) is contrary to arguments of-
ten cited by NGOs such as Gene Campaign. They say that the supposed increase in suicides is a tragic social consequence of farmers being forced into debt as a result of growing GM crops. Citing reasons for suicides, it said, “The absence of a safety net or any other insurance support, the ineffective irrigation systems, the presence of abusive banking systems, the wide availability of highly toxic pesticides, and the potential rewards for suicide likely all contributed to farmer suicides. This has nothing to do with cotton or the use of new technology.” According to government
Lobo cleared of sexual assault charges
‘Alva breached party discipline’
PANAJI, NOVEMBER 11 (AGENCIES): The Goa Children’s Court has dropped the sexual assault charges against murdered British teenager Scarlett Keeling’s lover Julio Lobo, but ord ered that he be booked for staying with the minor girl in violation of the Goa Children’s Act. Scarlett’s mother, Fiona MacKeown, had entrusted her 15-year-old daughter in 27-year-old Julio’s care before leaving for Gokarna in Karnataka with friends and family earlier this year. According to Scarlett’s personal diary, she had sexual relations with Lobo and was staying at his Siolim residence in the absence of
her mother. The teenager’s bruised and semi-naked body was found on the sea shore of Goa’s Anjuna beach just before dawn on Feb 18. On Monday, Goa Children’s Court President Desmond D’Costa issued a order clearing Lobo of all sexual assault charges. “There are absolutely no materials to even prima facie make out the charge. The contents of the diary cannot be admissible as evidence as they are statements made by the victim in anticipation of death. The contents of the diary are not dying declarations,” the order reads. Scarlett’s personal diary, which was leaked to the media,
had created a sensation due to the graphic and candid personal confessions of the teenager. There were several references to drug abuse, loneliness and sexual encounters. Although the court dropped sexual assault charges against Lobo, D’Costa has directed that charges be framed against him for living with a minor non-blood relative, which is in violation of the provisions of the Goa Children’s Act. Under the Goa Children’s Act, 2003 Section 8(4) and 8(9), the Women and Child Development Director has to be informed in writing if an adult is residing with a minor child who is not a blood relative. Violators are liable to be punished with a
fine of Rs.100,000 and imprisonment for one year. After Scarlett’s body was found, the Goa police initially said the teenager had drowned. However, MacKeown accused the Goa police of malpractice and campaigned for a second autopsy, which concluded that Scarlett had more than 50 bruises and that she had been given ecstasy, cocaine and LSD on the night she died. Police then announced she had been raped and murdered. Mackeown had alleged that Goa’s Home Minister Ravi Naik and his son Roy and the drug mafia operating in Goa were linked to her daughter’s murder.
NEW DELHI, NOVEMBER 11 (PTI): Congress on Tuesday lashed out at senior leader Margaret Alva accusing her of serious breach of discipline and said her allegations were motivated by the fact that her son was denied assembly election ticket. “She is unhappy that her son was denied a ticket in the Karnataka assembly elections. The motivation is clearly there. Is it not motivated? Otherwise she would not have talked of morals. It is not a moral issue,” Congress chief spokesperson Veerappa Moily told reporters. Moily said Alva is a member of the highest bodies of the
data, over 5,000 farmers have committed suicide in the last four years in Maharashtra, while 1,313 cases reported by Andhra Pradesh between 2005 and 2007. In Karnataka the number stood at 1,003, since 2005-06 till August this year. In the last four years, cases in Kerala were about 905, Gujarat 387, Punjab 75 and Tamil Nadu 26. But the IFPRI study rejected the presence of a surge in farmer suicides in recent years and any direct or reciprocal role of Bt cotton introduction in farmer suicides, while noting that “Bt cotton may have played a role in specific cases and seasons.”
party, including the CWC and AICC, and there is a breach of displine by her statement that tickets were sold in Karnataka assembly elections earlier this year. “She is raising an issue that happened six months ago,” he said, terming it as unfortunate and one that was not done by a leader of her stature. He said children, relatives and kith and kin are given tickets by the party but it is done not because they are relatives but on merit. “Her charges are an after-thought, baseless, absolutely unfounded and motivated,” he said. Moily said the DAC was fully seized of the matter and would decide on how to go about it.

Barack Obama makes historic White House visit
In this photo released by the White House, President Bush and President-elect Obama meet in the Oval Office of the White House on November 10 in Washington. (AP Photo)
WASHINGTON, NOVEMBER 11 (REUTERS): U.S. President-elect Barack Obama visited the White House on Monday for his first post-election meeting with President George W. Bush, a strikingly symbolic moment in the transition of power. Obama, who will take office on January 20 with the country close to recession, urged Bush to back immediate emergency aid for the struggling U.S. automakers, The New York Times reported. The president and first lady Laura Bush greeted
the newly elected president and his wife, Michelle, with smiles and handshakes, even as Obama’s advisers reviewed some of Bush’s executive orders with an eye to reversing them after he is sworn in on January 20. The two men met privately in the Oval Office for over an hour in talks thought to have encompassed the global financial crisis, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and other daunting challenges the Republican president will bequeath to his Democratic successor. It was their first face-
to-face encounter following Obama’s resounding victory over Republican John McCain in Tuesday’s election, which will make him the United States’ first black president. Obama, 47, had repeatedly attacked Bush’s “failed policies” on the campaign trail, and the Illinois senator swept to power on a theme of change -- specifically, change from the unpopular president’s approach to economics and foreign affairs. Top congressional Democrats have asked the Bush administration to consid-
er aid to the automakers through the financial bailout initiative that has so far covered banks and other financial services companies, and Obama urged Bush to act quickly at their meeting, according to The New York Times. Citing people familiar with their discussion, the Times said Bush indicated he might support some aid for the auto industry and a broader economic stimulus package if Obama dropped his opposition to a free-trade pact with Colombia. Obama’s aides say after taking office he will likely
move quickly to roll back Bush’s executive orders that limit stem cell research and expand oil and gas drilling in some areas. But members of Obama’s team cautioned on Monday he had not yet decided whether to reverse executive orders. There was no outward sign of tension, however, when the Obamas stepped from their limousine at the south portico of the White House. Earlier, they had been cheered by crowds of onlookers as their motorcade sped through the capital. “Good morning,” Laura Bush chirped, though it was well past noon. Obama put his hand on Bush’s back cordially as the two couples entered the mansion. The leaders then strolled down the colonnade side by side, chatting. Obama was the more animated of the two, gesturing with both hands. He had never set foot in the Oval Office before and was ushered in ahead of Bush. While their husbands met, the first lady gave Michelle Obama a tour of the White House living quarters, which will soon be her family’s new home and where daughters Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, will be running the halls. At the end of a two-hour visit, Bush and Obama had nothing to say to reporters and both camps were mostly tight-lipped. White House spokeswoman Dana Perino would only say that domestic and international issues were discussed and that Bush “again pledged a smooth transition.” Obama spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter said the leaders agreed on the need to cooperate in the changeover “in light of the nation’s many critical economic and security challenges.” Later, as Obama’s plane sat on the airport tarmac in Washington before taking off for Chicago, journalists
onboard overheard snippets of a cell phone conversation the president-elect had with an unknown party. “I am not going to be spending too much time in Washington over the next several weeks,” Obama said. Newly elected presidents traditionally visit the White House between election and inauguration but usually wait longer than Obama did. He came calling at Bush’s invitation after only six days, underscoring a sense of urgency in the transition. It will be the first wartime transfer of power in four decades and comes amid economic upheaval at home and abroad. Financial markets, struggling in a global credit crunch, are awaiting news of Obama’s appointments for key jobs such as Treasury secretary, but a spokeswoman for Obama said on Monday he would not make any Cabinet announcements this week. Obama said in his first post-election news conference on Friday he would not be rushed into making hasty decisions. Underscoring Obama’s assertion he will not act as a shadow president during the transition, an aide confirmed what the White House had been saying -- that he will not attend a global financial summit in Washington on Friday and Saturday. Bush, whose low approval ratings helped propel Obama to victory, has said he will do all he can to help in the changeover. Though visits by incoming presidents to the White House before taking office are a ritual dating back decades, there was little denying Obama’s tour carried special significance. The son of a black father from Kenya and white mother from Kansas, Obama made history by winning the presidency, an achievement seen as a breakthrough in U.S. race relations.

Short sleep tied to heart disease risk NEW YORK, NOVEMBER 11 (REUTERS HEALTH): People with high blood pressure who get less than the standard amount of sleep may face an increased risk of heart disease and stroke, researchers reported. In a study of more than 1,200 Japanese adults with high blood pressure, the investigators found that those who slept for less than 7.5 hours each night were more likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke or die of cardiac arrest over a 4-year period. At particular risk were “short sleepers” who failed to have a blood-pressure dip that normally occurs overnight. The findings suggest that doctors caring for patients with high blood pressure should ask them about their sleep habits, the researchers report in the Archives of Internal Medicine. A relatively small number of people are both short sleepers and have no overnight decline in blood pressure, note the researchers, led by Dr. Kazuo Eguchi of Jichi Medical University in Japan. Therefore, “it is a group that could be easily identified and monitored more closely.” The findings are based on data from 1,255 men and women with high blood pressure who were between 33 and 97 years old; the average age was 70. The researchers used portable blood pressure monitors to record each participant’s bloodpressure changes over a 24-hour period, and then followed the patients over an average of 50 months. During that time, there were 99 heart attacks, strokes or deaths from cardiac arrest. In general, Eguchi’s team found, men and women who slept for less than 7.5 hours per night had a 68-percent higher risk of one of these cardiovascular complications than their betterrested counterparts. Similarly, the risk was greater among participants who had shown no drop in their overnight blood pressure, versus those who had. But the combination of short sleep and non-dipping blood pressure conferred the highest risk -- a more than four-fold greater chance of heart attack, stroke or cardiac death. Chronic sleep deprivation has been linked to a higher risk of a number of health problems, including diabetes, coronary heart disease and obesity. The researchers suspect that a lack of sleep leads to increased nervous system activity throughout the day, which may in turn stress the cardiovascular system. Non-dipping overnight blood pressure has also been tied to increased nervous system activity during the day, Eguchi’s team notes. Therefore, they suggest, the combination might have an “interactive effect to increase cardiovascular risk.”
Former Taiwan prez detained TAIPEI, NOVEMBER 11 (AGENCIES): Taiwan’s former President Chen Shui-bian has been detained in connection with corruption claims. Mr Chen spent much of Tuesday being questioned by prosecutors in Taipei, before being led away in handcuffs. He is accused of money laundering and illegally using a special presidential fund during his eight years in office, which ended in May. He denies any wrongdoing, and accuses the new administration of persecuting him to bow to the wishes of Beijing. Mr Chen is an ardent supporter of Taiwanese independence, and his views have angered the Beijing government. The former leader, who held power from 2000 to 2008, spent more than six hours in the prosecutor’s office on Tuesday answering questions about corruption. As he was led out, he put his handcuffed hands in the air and shouted “political persecution” before getting into a waiting vehicle. Although he has now been detained, it appears he has yet to be formally arrested over the charges. However he clearly expects to be, and said so at a news conference earlier in the day. Mr Chen and his family have been mired in corruption allegations since 2006, when his son-in-law was charged with insider trading on the stock market and then jailed for seven years. The former president is under investigation for allegedly embezzling 14.8 million Taiwan dollars (US$480,500; £306,000) from the government.
World recalls end of World War I
PARIS, NOVEMBER 11 (AGENCIES): Ceremonies are being held across the globe to mark the 90th anniversary of the end of World War I. At a service in Verdun, northeast France, President Nicolas Sarkozy paid tribute to the millions who died during the four-year conflict. French and German troops fought for eight months at Verdun in the longest battle of a war that reshaped Europe. In London, three of the four surviving British World War I veterans attended a ceremony at the Cenotaph. Henry Allingham, 112, Harry Patch, 110, and Bill Stone, 108, represented the RAF, Army and Royal Navy respectively. At 1100 GMT, a twominute silence was observed, marking the time - at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month - when the Armi-
stice Treaty came into effect to end the war. Speaking to the hundreds attending the Armistice Day service in Verdun, Mr Sarkozy paid tribute to all who had died, as well as those who lost fathers and sons in the fighting. “France will never forget the children who have fought for her,” he said. He paid respect to the soldiers from Europe, North America, Africa and Australasia “who died far away from their countries to defend our liberty”. Prince Charles, the heir to the British throne, and the Duchess of Cornwall were guests of honour at the event. But no veterans were in attendance, says the BBC’s Europe correspondent, Jonny Dymond. Not one member of the two huge armies that clashed on the fields of Verdun survives. Only the dead were left to be remembered, and the
backdrop of the service was a huge stone ossuary, containing the remains of hundreds of thousands of men from both sides who died in the fighting. Mr Sarkozy, Prince Charles, Australia’s Governor-General Quentin Bryce and Peter Mueller, the president of German Bundesrat, laid wreaths in a field of 15,000 graves in front of the building. A respectful silence was held and the bell tolled inside the ossuary, where Mr Sarkozy lit a memorial flame and a male choir sang the French national anthem. Since the war, Verdun has become a symbol of FrancoGerman reconciliation. But its hillside has come to symbolise World War I’s awful savagery, says our correspondent: During the fighting, more than 60m shells fell on the land, transforming it into
a pitted piece of hell on earth. As well as services across Europe, Iraq and Afghanistan, remembrance ceremonies have been held in Australia, which lost 60,000 men in the conflict. Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd used a speech at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra to issue a call for peace. “We have all endured a most bloody century,” he said. “Let us resolve afresh at the dawn of this new century... that this might be a truly pacific peaceful century.” A lone bugler then played the Last Post, which is used to to commemorate the war dead in Commonwealth countries. World War I was the world’s first industrialised war. It toppled four European empires, led to the creation of the Soviet Union, and marked the end of Europe’s long global hegemony.

Power shift in North Korea suspected Kim May Have Had Second Stroke TOKYO, NOVEMBER 11 (AFP): North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il may have had a second stroke in October that has affected his speech, a Japanese news report said Tuesday. US intelligence received information that Kim, 66, had another stroke in late October, Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) said on its website, citing an unnamed American intelligence source based in South Korea. According to the information, Kim was receiving treatment at an exclusive Pyongyang hospital for a first stroke he suffered in mid-August, TBS said. “However, he had the second stroke in late October, which caused him difficulty moving his left hand and leg, and has affected his speech,” TBS said. The US source, however, was not clear about the severity of the symptoms, TBS said. A South Korea unification ministry spokesman said he had no information to confirm the TBS report. Kim’s health is the subject of intense speculation because he has not publicly nominated a successor to run the impoverished and nuclear-armed nation. French brain surgeon Francois-Xavier Roux, head of neurosurgery at the Sainte-Anne Hospital in Paris, has admitted to visiting Pyongyang last month but denied treating the North Korean leader. After Kim failed to attend a September 9 parade marking the country’s 60th anniversary, South Korean and US officials said the reclusive leader had suffered a stroke around mid-August but was recovering well. Japan’s Prime Minister Taro Aso said late last month that Kim was probably in hospital but still capable of making decisions. Some reports have said Kim may have suffered partial paralysis. North Korean official media recently released news accounts and photos of Kim’s activities without specifying when the activities took place.
SEOUL, NOVEMBER 11 (AFP): The brother-in-law of North Korea’s Kim JongIl has become even more powerful since Kim fell sick, officials and analysts say, with some believing he is effectively standing in for the supreme leader. The influence of Jang Song-Taek has become greater than ever since Kim was reportedly hit by a stroke, Cheong SeongChang, of South Korea’s private Sejong Institute thinktank, said Tuesday. “Jang is apparently in charge of receiving orders from Kim and channelling them (to state agencies),” he told AFP. A senior South Korean intelligence official went further, saying Jang was acting like a stand-in in day-today state affairs. Kim, the absolute ruler of his hardline communist state, has never publicly designated a successor to run his impoverished but nuclear-armed nation. After he failed to appear at a key parade on September 9, South Korean and US officials said he had suffered a
stroke around mid-August. Tokyo Broadcasting System, citing a US intelligence source, said Tuesday the 66year-old suffered a second stroke in late October. South Korean officials could not confirm the report. North Korean state media have recently issued a series of photos of Kim, in an apparent attempt to end speculation about his health. But they have all been undated. One which was issued last week had been digitally altered to superimpose Kim’s image on a military group, experts said. The intelligence official, speaking on a radio talk show Monday on condition of anonymity, said Jang, 62, is now in full charge of the security and police agencies including the dreaded secret police. “That’s why people say Jang is in effect number two in terms of real power in the North,” he said. “For Chairman Kim, the most trustworthy person at a time of ill health is Jang, the husband of his sister,” the official said. He said Jang has a
range of contacts within both the ruling party and the military. “Based on these facts, intelligence authorities here suspect Jang is acting like a stand-in for the chairman.” The official added: “We find it rather fortunate that Jang Song-Taek, not the military, is in effect governing the North.” Analysts said Jang’s new powers do not necessarily mean he is in line to take over. Cheong of the Sejong Institute did not believe he is acting as a stand-in and said the extra powers could easily be taken away depending on the state of Kim’s health or on a whim. “It’s better to say Chairman Kim is ruling through Jang than Jang is ruling the North,” former unification minister Chung Se-Hyun said Tuesday. Jang, husband of Kim’s sister Kim KyongHui, was seen as the North’s second most powerful man before falling out of favour in early 2004 -- reportedly because of his luxurious lifestyle. He made a comeback in late 2005 and in October
2007 was appointed to head a party department which supervises police, judges and prosecutors. Baek SeungJoo of the Korea Institute for Defence Analyses said Jang’s influence would likely grow as Kim ages further and his health worsens because relatives would limit access to the leader. Baek told AFP Jang’s rise in power would benefit the leader’s eldest son Kim Jong-Nam. “There is an axis of alliance between Jang, Kim Kyong-Hui and Kim Jong-Nam,” he said. But many analysts believe there will never be another all-powerful dynastic ruler, although a son could head up a collective leadership. Cheong said that if Kim Jong-Il dies suddenly, there would be a power struggle through which a collective leadership from the party elite would likely emerge. “Even if Kim dies suddenly, that does not mean the collapse of a control tower in the North,” Cheong said.

Potro win keeps hopes alive
SHANGHAI, NOVEMBER 11 (AGENCIES): Juan Martin del Potro kept his Masters Cup hopes alive with a straight-sets win over France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The Argentine sealed a vital 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-5) win, after both men had lost their opening games in the Gold Group. Del Potro edged a tight first set and held off a Tsonga fightback in the second before winning the battle of the Masters Cup debutants in Shanghai. The unbeaten pair of Novak Djokovic and Nikolay Davydenko meet in the other Gold Group match later on Tuesday. The top two will go through to the semi-finals, along with two from the Red Group of Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Andy Roddick and Gilles Simon. Tsonga’s hopes of progressing are hanging by a thread after his defeat in what was an open and entertaining encounter. crucial times cost him dear and Del Potro’s more consistent play brought him victory in two close sets. I haven’t watched Tsonga much recently. Is his backhand always that bad? Tsonga was broken in the very first game but continued to go for his shots and he broke back to level at 2-2 with a rasping cross-court forehand. From then on the first set went with serve and into a tie-break, where Tsonga’s errors - partproved far more costly. Del Potro clinched the set with a big serve of his own and started the second set in confident fashion breaking to lead 2-0. Tsonga quickly fought back again to level and also kept his hopes alive when he trailed 15-30 at 4-5 with a slam-dunk smash and equally athletic volley that helped him hold. But Del Potro again seized control of the secondset tie-break with a run of four straight points, capped by a rasping forehand winner on the run, and he sealed his victory with an overhead.
McLaren likely to recommend drivers to Force India
SILVERSTONE, NOVEMBER 11 (REUTERS): Force India's driver line-up could change now that a five-year deal with McLaren and Mercedes is in place, team boss Vijay Mallya hinted on Monday. "They (McLaren) will recommend what they believe to be in the best interests of my team and I have to decide. And I would be hard pressed to ignore their advice," he told Reuters at the
team's Silverstone factory. "The first thing is building the car. If we don't have a car then there's no point having a driver...It's already pushing the envelope a little bit, so we need to focus on the car. The driver comes next and we will have these conversations. Mallya reiterated that the team does not intend "at present" to change the line-up of Italian Giancarlo Fisichella and Germany's Adrian
Sutil. However he did not rule out other candidates being tested. McLaren and Mercedes have several drivers on their books, including 22year-old Scot Paul di Resta and experienced Spanish test driver Pedro de la Rosa, and there has been considerable speculation about their prospects of appearing in a Force India car. "I haven't gone into any details on drivers yet," said Mallya,
who in the past week has ousted former team principal Colin Kolles and technical head Mike Gascoyne while also terminating Force India's supply of Ferrari engines. "I have taken some very hard decisions in the last week for this team. My interest is this team and it has to go where I want it to go. "I am going to do whatever it takes. There are no emotions involved." The
new partners are providing Force India with a complete drivetrain (engine and gearbox) as well as KERS (kinetic energy recovery system). In addition, Simon Roberts is moving from McLaren Applied Technologies to become Force India's chief operating officer. "There's nothing offbounds in this partnership," said McLaren chief executive Martin Whitmarsh when asked about drivers.
"We will make proposals and recommendations that we think are enhancing the prospect of good performance from this team. "I suspect he (Mallya) has some staggering business commitments outside of Formula One and he would expect us, as specialists and professionals in this field, to be making all of the recommendations that are necessary to ensure that we go forward."
LONDON, NOVEMBER 11 (AGENCIES): Former Manchester United, Newcastle United and England striker Andrew Cole has retired from playing. Cole, who won 15 England caps in a glittering career, left Nottingham Forest in October after failing to make an impact at the Championship club. The 37-year-old scored a total of 289 career goals and won five Premier League titles, the Champions League and two FA Cups while at Manchester United. In his 19-year professional career he played for a total of 13 clubs. Cole failed to score in 11 games for Forest after joining the club in July and his contract was cancelled by mutual consent after only three months. The 37-year-
old will now look to pursue a career in coaching or management. Cole started his career at Arsenal but only made one appearance before moving to Bristol City in 1992, and it was there he made his name, scoring 20-times in only 41 appearances. His time at Bristol secured him a £1.75m move to Newcastle United in 1993 where he became a fans favourite and established himself as one of the best strikers in English football. Controversially, Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan sold Cole to Manchester United after just two and a half seasons at St James' Park and it was at Old Trafford where he enjoyed the most successful period of his career. Scoring 93 goals for
the Red Devils his partnership with Dwight Yorke was a key factor of United's treble-winning season in 199899. But despite his success at club level, Cole struggled to establish himself in the England team scoring just once in 15 appearances. After leaving United ion 2001, Cole went on to play for Blackburn, Fulham, Manchester City, Portsmouth, Birmingham, Sunderland and Burnley before joining his hometown club Nottingham Forest in July, 2008. But after finding his firstteam appearances limited, Cole decided to call time on his 19-year playing career. Cole's Premier League scoring record of 187 goals is bettered only by Alan Shearer who has 261.

I am happy and I said it many times. I like the city, the food and the weather.”
BARCELONA, NOVEMBER 11 (REUTERS): World number one Rafael Nadal will miss Spain's Davis Cup final against Argentina this month after failing to recover from tendonitis in his knee. Nadal said it had been an extremely difficult decision and he had done everything possible to get fit. "I am used to playing with pain but this was a new and different pain I cannot control," he said in a statement on his website (www.rafaelnadal.com).
The injury forced Nadal to pull out of the season-ending Masters Cup in Shanghai which began Sunday and he also had to retire from his Paris Masters quarter-final against Nikolay Davydenko last month. The Spanish tennis federation is expected to name its team Tuesday for the tie in Mar del Plata from November 21-23. The French Open and Wimbledon champion has previously blamed his injury on an overloaded tennis calendar.

SHANGHAI, NOVEMBER 11 (AGENCIES): Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles put up a spirited fight but lost their second round robin match of the USD 4,45,000 Tennis Masters Cup to top seeds Mike and Bob Bryan on Tuesday. The third seeded Indo-Bahamian pair went down 5-7, 6-3, 4-10 to their American opponents in the Red Group clash. The fiercely contested first set saw Bryan brothers taking the lead as they converted a crucial breakpoint even as Bhupathi and Knowles missed theirs. The Indo-Czech pair drew parity by winning the second set breaking their rivals twice and saving as many breakpoints on their serve. However, in the super tie-breaker Bryan brothers prevailed to record their second successive win. Top two teams of the Red and Gold group would make the semifinal stage of the high profile season ending event.
English top players face new drug tests
LONDON, NOVEMBER 11 (AGENCIES): England footballers and Premier League stars are to face Olympic-style, random out-of-competition drug testing. One player per team is tested after each match but in future 30 players may undergo a further five tests a year. As with British Olympic athletes, they must reveal their location for an hour each day, including summer holidays. Under the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) code, football is required to align itself with Olympic and other team sports such as rugby and cricket. UK Sport, the agency that funds Olympic sport and runs Britain's anti-doping programme, claims that the 'where-
abouts ruling' has been working well for other sports for years. John Steele, UK Sport's chief executive, told BBC Radio 5 Live: "This move, in partnership with the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA), is really getting whereabouts into the professional soccer game, to bring them in line with other athletes and continue the fight against doping across all our sports. "Anything we can do that furthers that battle is very positive." The new tests will look for both performance-enhancing drugs and recreational substances. The use of social drugs such as cocaine is only prohibited during competition by Wada but the FA's stance is to prohibit their use out of competition as well. "This
is borne out of a belief that footballers should be drug-free at all times," said an FA spokesman. "Under our doping control regulations, a positive out-of-competition test for a social drug such as cocaine can and does result in a ban of up to six months for a first offence. We are committed to being at the forefront of the fight against doping." Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand received an eight-month ban for failing to attend a drugs test at the club's Carrington training ground in 2003. And former Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Bosnich was sacked by the club and awarded a ninemonth ban in the same year, having tested positive for cocaine.
Another Chelsea player, Adrian Mutu, was suspended by the Football Association for seven months in 2004 after failing a drugs test. The practice of declaring an athlete's whereabouts for an hour each day in advance, to allow drugs tests to be administered at short notice, is common to Olympic sports such as cycling and athletics. All British Olympians, regardless of their sport, were subject to similar tests and restrictions in the build-up to the Beijing Games and the same rules will apply to footballers. Sprinter Christine Ohuruogu incurred a year-long ban from the sport in 2006 when she failed to turn up in her stated location,
missing anti-doping testers on three occasions. She also received a lifetime ban from the Olympic Games but the suspension was later overturned on appeal. While Olympic athletes are now familiar with the routine, footballers may not take kindly to being tied down to a specific location at a set time each day. However, players will be able to change their whereabouts with only one minute's notice. For example, a player scheduled to arrive at a training ground at midday could alter his arrangements by text messaging anti-doping testers at one minute to noon, if he were stuck in traffic or held up at home. Andy Parkinson,
UK Sport's head of operations for a drug-free sport, insisted he was not setting out to make life difficult for footballers. "The last thing we want is for football to be in that position where it doesn't focus enough - doesn't put controls in place - and suddenly finds itself a sport with a fantastic profile in a crisis," he told The Sun newspaper. "The identity of the players on the list will be decided by UK Sport and the FA. We'll take into account behaviour of athletes in the past, long-term injuries, where maybe they disappeared to Eastern Europe for six months to get an injury sorted, or if they have had a (previous) doping violation." It is reported that UK Sport
and FA officials will meet in the next couple of months to draw up a players' register ahead of the move. The scheme is expected to begin next season, with a new version of the Wada code set to be introduced on 1 January 2009. HOW NEW TESTS WILL WORK > Expected to be introduced in July 2009 > A testing pool of 30 players selected by UK Sport and the FA > Players must say where they will be for one hour each day in advance > Players can alter their location up to a minute before the hour in question

ewis Hamilton may have trained himself to contain nerves of steel, but spare a thought for Pussycat Doll singer Nicole Scherzinger, whose heart was in her mouth as she watched her boyfriend race to become the youngest F1 title-holder. Nicole, who has been dating the superstar for a year, has spoken of the butterflies in her stomach as she watched from the pit lane at São Paulo. The Hawaiian-born singer, 30, jumped up and down, threw her arms in the air, and shouted with delight as Lewis, 23, became the youngest ever person to claim the F1 title. 'I arrived with butterflies in my tummy and they never went away,' said Nicole. “It’s like, "Hey, that’s my man right there," you know? 'You want the whole world to know your thoughts. I know now what Victoria Beckham goes through watching David at all those games… You’re exhausted already.' Her high anxiety for the 13 million viewers who watched the climax of the F1 championship on TV, but for Nicole, the suspense
was almost unbearable. 'It was like being on a rollercoaster - at times I dared not look and kept peeking through my fingers to see for a glimpse what was happening. I could hear the cheers all around me but you’re not sure at that stage who they’re for.' In the frenzy that followed, Nicole was one of the first to hug the young champ, together with his ecstatic family - father Anthony, his half-brother Nicholas and his stepmother Linda. 'It was like time stood still,' she recalled. 'I know this was his dream and to be part of it, you know, was such an honour. Our eyes met and we needed no words, really. It was magical. Oh, listen to me getting all gooey,' she laughed. 'But I was so proud of him, just as the world was. It’s his dream and he achieved it all by himself.' The couple first met at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Germany late last year. She said: 'It’s all going to change really from now on, but in a good way. 'We’re both busy and very young, but I know that we’re a team. Team Lewis, and, yeah, it’s all great between us. I could not be happier and I think that

he feels the same - well, I know he does. Asked by Hello! Magazine about their future plans she said: 'Marriage? Well, I’m only 30, but I want some time first before we do all the wedding stuff. Stop try-
ing to marry me off!' So no wedding bells yet, then, but the romance is very much alive. 'It’s the best,' she said. 'After the race we just had a few minutes together - we spoke and I can’t say what was said but I will treasure
the moment forever. Now stop making me cry again!' So is Nicole a big fan of F1? Or is she just playing the dutiful girlfriend? 'I do, honest! I mean I don’t get it all, but it’s a thrill to be racing that hard. No, I haven’t
been in a car with him like that - I’m not insured for one, but that’s his job. And let’s face it, I don’t think I would want him dressed in my trademark tops and being a Pussycat Doll now would I?'

avid Beckham enjoyed a bonding session with his son Brooklyn at an Lakers game in Los Angeles yesterday. The football star wrapped his arm tenderly around his eldest child, who looked delighted at having his father's attention all to himself. It appears the nine-year-old, who is a keen footballer player, has also inherited David's famous penchant for grooming - his hair was carefully styled into a faux-hawk. The pair cheered on as their team defeated the Houston Rockets by the final score of 111-82 at Staples Centre. David is making the most of family time ahead of his move to Milan in January. He is set to join AC Milan on loan from his club LA Galaxy in order to maintain his fitness and his spot in the England squad. But while David decamps to Italy, wife Victoria and their sons will stay in America after the couple decided against uprooting the entire family. However, reports suggest that Victoria is nervous about David being so far away once again. The last time David was separated from his family for a long period - in 2004 when he was playing for Real Madrid - there were allegations of an affair with his then personal assistant, Rebecca Loos. A source told Closer magazine recently: 'She's drummed it into him not to do anything behind her back, and to promise to tell her if anything goes on with another woman, so she can talk him out of it before it goes too far. The source added: 'Victoria can't bear the thought of being on her own. David's doing all he can to ensure Victoria and their sons feel safe when he leaves.'

irst lady Laura Bush shared some tips with Michelle Obama on how to survive in the White House -- particularly with young daughters -- and gave her successor a tour of the mansion that will soon become her home. Less than one week after Barack Obama won a historic election to succeed President George W. Bush on Jan. 20, the Obamas paid a visit to the White House on Monday. After the two couples greeted with kisses and handshakes at the executive mansion's South Portico, they went briefly inside for a look around together before heading off in opposite directions. Obama stepped into the Oval Office, ushered in by Bush. He later described the center of American power as "a really nice office." "It was a bit of a momentous day," Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters on a flight from Washington to Chicago. "I don't know that I would characterize him awe struck."

While their husbands sat down in the Oval Office, Mrs. Bush took Mrs. Obama on a tour of the first family residence on the second and third levels of the mansion. They visited every room, said Mrs. Bush's spokeswoman, Sally McDonough. She said the women, who were meeting each other for the first time, spent time in the rooms that would likely become the bedrooms of the younger Obamas: 10-year-old Malia and 7-yearold Sasha. "They did talk about their children and how the first lady can change the decor of any of the rooms in the private residence," said McDonough. The women also spoke about how best to handle having daughters grow up in the fishbowl of the White House. The Bush's twin daughters, Jenna and Barbara, spent part of their teenage years in the White House. Though the Bushes tried to make sure their daughters were kept out of the news,

The Oscar winning actress, 40, looked glowing as she posed in a L'Wren Scott cream strappy gown and heels. Kidman was receiving an honour at the Glamour Women Of The Year Awards in New York with husband Keith Urban. Earlier in the day, Nicole showed off an image of her daughter Sunday Rose on the Oprah Winfrey Show. The Moulin Rouge! star didn't realise the cameras were rolling when she showed the photo to Oprah, so decided to share it with the audience. Is this the end for Neville? Gary Neville’s days could be numbered at Manchester United. Club Captain Neville, 33, is in the final year of his contract and has not been offered a new deal.
Church Sports Conference concludes DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 11 (MExN): The recently held Church Sports Conference at the NEZCC concluded on Sunday evening. The conference was attended by participants from various associations, churches and para-church organizations, and sports enthusiasts. Some delegates from the neighboring states of Manipur, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh participated in the conference as well. The conference was first of its kind in the northeast India region. For many people, the conference was an eye opener, especially the participants who came from outside Nagaland. It was being organized by the Nagaland Sports Coalition (NSC) with the NBCC Youth Department under the theme “Sports for Holistic Growth,” stated Dr. Thamsing Lamkang, the Convener of Nagaland Sports Coalition, in a press release. The objective of the conference was a clear concept for Christian people or the churches to benefits sports for a holistic growth; and to bring about changes through the ‘Universal Language’ of sports. According to the statistic made available from the world of sports, 87 percent of the world population played one or the other sports in their life-time, that proved the tremendous impact of sport as a tool in this generation, stated Dr. Lamkang. The churches in Nagaland have more resource than the government in providing or promoting any kinds of sports, rather then playing sports only for recreation. The churches can also play a part in identifying sport talents among the novice. Chaplaincy is another most important role a church can provide for Christian sportsmen and women. There are many top athletes in the world produced and backed by the local churches. So it’s not just the government we should always depend for any sports development, but church and para-church should rather incorporate together side-by-side to make a difference through sports.

LONDON, NOVEMBER 11 (AGENCIES): Neville, who missed the last 16 months after damaging his ankle during a Premier League clash with Bolton Wanderers in 2007, has struggled to regain his form and has started just four of 11 league games this season. On Saturday, Arsenal platemaker Samir Nasri made his day a misery in
United’s 2-1 defeat at the Emirates, and he was finally replaced by Rafael da Silva, 18, finally replaced him after 63 minutes and eventually scored a consolation goal. The Brazilian is seen as Neville’s long-term replacement, with manager Sir Alex Ferguson effusive in his praise for the youngster. Ferguson said: “The boy’s such a gutsy character, and he’s got
such talent. He’s got the Brazilian mentality of ‘Give me the ball, I want to play’. It’s a great attribute to have for such a young kid.” Neville’s opportunities at the club have been further jeopardised by the club’s confidence in last season’s right-back Wes Brown, 29, who has been given a new four-year contract. In addition, Rio Ferdi-
nand has been told he will be United’s long-term captain, a job he did in Neville’s absence last season. Neville, however, has tried to remain positive and is not prepared to give up his place that easily. “I just need games”, he said. “Having been out for so long, I need a run of five, six or seven matches. “It’s just a case of remaining patient,
Stop slating Premier League referees, says Football Association

LONDON, NOVEMBER 11 (AGENCIES): The Football Association have called on managers to stop openly criticising refereeing decisions, in a response to suggestions that their Respect campaign is on the verge of disintegration. Theinitiativehasbeenundermined by public outbursts from a number of managers, most recently Joe Kinnear, the Newcastle manager, who claimed that he could count “on one hand” the number of officials he holds in high esteem. FA director of governance Jonathan Hall said on Monday, “It has been disappointing to witness various incidents of managers publicly criticising referees. There are already various official channels for managers to provide their views on refereeing performances, and managers are actively encouraged to use these channels rather than criticising referees through the media. “We accept that it can be very frustrating for managers when an incorrect decision is taken, but no referee does so deliberately just as players and managers do not deliberately make mistakes. It is easy to support officials when a decision goes your way, the real test is the ability to show understanding when a call goes against you.” The League Managers’ Association were called together yesterday by their chief executive, Richard Bevan, after reports that two managers were on the cusp of “walking away” from the initiative. The FA were quick to remind the LMA that they had given
their full backing to the campaign at its launch earlier this year. The FA are adamant that they will not abandon the campaign. “This is a long-term commitment and the FA will continue to work with all other organisations to improve behaviour across the game,” the statement said.
Kinnear in trouble
The FA has confirmed that they are considering disciplinary action against Newcastle manager Joe Kinnear, who called match official Martin Atkinson a 'Mickey Mouse referee' following Sunday's 2-1 defeat to Fulham. Kinnear was heavily critical of Atkinson's decision not to give Newcastle a free kick for a challenge between Fulham forward Andy Johnson and Newcatsle defender Claudio Cacapa, in the move that led to the penalty from which Fulham scored the winner. “There was a blatant foul prior to the penalty, which the referee ignored,” Kinnear said. “We were camped in their half. Cacapa was on the ball - and Johnson completely pushes him out the way, nicks the ball and gets the penalty.” “We've got the Mickey Mouse referee doing nothing. He's made an error that cost us. That's the standard of refereeing in this country. It happens week in, week out. There's always a smart answer like ‘someone was obstructing my view’. You used to be able to have a bit of banter with referees, and they'd put their hands up if they make mistakes. Now they hide.”
keeping fit and training well every day.” However, with early pacesetters Chelsea and Liverpool leading the title race, Sir Alex is unlikely to remain patient. He has demonstrated his lack of sentimentality in the past, dispensing with the likes of long-serving players Nicky Butt and Roy Keane as soon as they started to lose their effectiveness.
Tonight’s match against QPR will see the return of 19year-old midfielder Rodrigo Possebon, who suffered a suspected broken leg after a horror challenge by Middlesbrough’s Emanuel Pogatetz in the last round of the Carling Cup in September. The Brazilian is set to line up start alongside the likes of Jonny Evans, Manucho and Danny Welbeck.

Series win sees Bhajji up the order DUBAI, NOVEMBER 11 (PTI): Indian bowlers' fantastic performance in the just-concluded BorderGavaskar trophy is reflected in their improved ICC rankings with off-spinner Harbhajan Singh rising to a five-year high of seventh and pacer Ishant Sharma breaking into the top-30 for the first time. Both Harbhajan and Man of the Series Ishant claimed 15-wickets apiece in the series. The 28year-old Harbhajan took seven wickets in the fourth Test against Australia at Nagpur and as a result, has moved past Chaminda Vaas of Sri Lanka and Pakistan's Shoaib Akhtar. Ishant is up six places to 30th position after taking another four wickets in the Nagpur Test. Meanwhile, the news is not so good for Zaheer Khan who lost three
places following the Nagpur Test and is now 18th. The left-arm pacer took just one wicket for 125 runs. Legspinner Amit Mishra continued his rise in the bowling rankings, gaining six places to 43rd position. The bowling rankings continue to be headed by Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralidaran, followed by South Africa's Dale Steyn in second place and Clark. In the batting list, Sachin Tendulkar, who registered his 40th Test century at Nagpur, gained three places and is 16th just behind Australia vice-captain Michael Clarke, who loses one place to 15th . Virender Sehwag has moved up two places to 11th spot after scoring 66 and 92 in the match. West Indies' Shivnarine Chanderpaul is still at the top of the batting list.
Djokovic wins to reach last four SHANGHAI, NOVEMBER 11 (AGENCIES): Novak Djokovic became the first player to book his place in the semi-finals of the Masters Cup with a tight 7-6 (7-3) 0-6 7-5 win over Nikolay Davydenko. Djokovic edged the first set on a tie-break but lost seven games in a row as the Russian roared back to level. The third set was a tense affair but Djokovic held his nerve to triumph. Davydenko or Juan Martin del Potro will join him in the last four after the Argentine beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Tuesday's other Gold Group match. Davydenko certainly had enough chances to see off Djokovic but it was the Serbian who eventu-
ally prevailed. After Djokovic was broken in the first game of the match, Davydenko served for the first set at 5-4 but the second seed fought back to level. Two aces by Djokovic and two double-faults by Davydenko helped to decide the first set tie-break only for the match to be turned on its head completely in the second set as Djokovic crumbled. He had to wait 41 minutes to win another game before pulling himself together to level at 1-1 in the decider. The third set saw both players make mistakes but it was Djokovic who snatched victory - breaking Davydenko at 5-5 and serving out for a dramatic victory.
