Giving a Voice TORI’S PERFECT DAY by Nancy Maier Here at Mosaic we try hard to help the people we serve reach their dreams and goals. Tori’s dream was to write poems and to have them published. Tori and I worked more than 2 years together. She would write poems in her journals and, every couple of months, she would come in and dictate them to me. I would type them up, file them, and wait for more. My friend Ann attended a Discover the Possibilities mission tour last summer. I knew that she had recently published two books of her own and asked her to guide me in the right direction. She introduced me to Roy, a published author/poet who knew exactly how to help us out.

We sent him Tori’s poems, a dedication, a biography page, and back cover and front cover photo. He put it together and sent it off to Amazon for us. He order 100 to be printed.

“Tori held two successful book readings and signings.” Tori’s perfect day was when she received 50 of those books and opened the box and saw her own book with her name on it! She held two successful book readings and signings in November and December at Graves Drug in Arkansas City, Kansas, and College Hill Coffee in Winfield, Kansas. She had a wonderful

turn-out and is hoping to do something with Roy in Wichita soon. Tori is a wonderful ambassador for Mosaic. She invites people to our tours, was a table captain at our Partners in Possibilities event this past October, and she loves to share her poems and passion with everyone. She is proud of her job at the coffee shop at Graves Drug in Ark City and loves that she helps people wake up in the morning! If you would like to meet Tori, purchase one of her books, and hear a poem or two, please come to one of our upcoming Discover the Possibilities mission tours. The good news is that Amazon is on a second printing and Tori has started writing poems for book two!

Tori reads to the crowd at Graves Drug.

Caring Community MOSAIC HOLIDAY EXTRAVAGANZA On Dec. 11, Mosaic in Winfield hosted a holiday event for parents, guardians, donors, friends, and the people we serve at Baden Square Community Center in Winfield. We combined two annual events (parent/guardian holiday dinner and Santa Claus Christmas party) into one and it was wonderful.

The Winfield High School Viking Voices entertained us with beautiful Christmas music while we waited for a special man to arrive from the North Pole. We enjoyed selections including “O Holy Night” and a medley of Christmas songs. Thank you to Matt Bertholf for sharing such an outstanding group with us. Shortly after the entertainment, Santa made his appearance and passed out gifts. The smiles and excitement from the people we serve extended from one side of the room to the other.

Some of the comments we received were, “It was great hearing the wonderful music.” “Thank you for such a lovely time, it really meant a lot to me.” “It was nice to spend time with the person I am guardian for.” We are looking forward to doing this event again this year!

Caring Community REDEEMER LUTHERAN CHURCH ANGEL TREE by Nancy Maier Redeemer Lutheran Church has provided an angel tree for Mosaic in Winfield for 16 years. People who receive angel tree gifts lack any extra funding for things like bedding, pillows, socks, underwear, warm coats, pajamas, body wash and other personal items. These are a sample of the items put on the angel tree. The people who select angels at Redeemer have three weeks to purchase and return their angel gifts. Ninety-five percent of everyone’s list is usually purchased for them. We are so very thankful for our partnership with Redeemer during Christmas. Smiles of joy are witnessed by staff on Christmas morning.

A life of possibilities for people with intellectual disabilities.

From the Executive Director NEW YEAR by Leslie Lackamp Happy 2017 friends! I hope your holidays were filled with many blessings. As we begin the New Year, I am filled with excitement and Leslie Lackamp Executive Director motivation to Mosaic in Winfield continue to further the mission of Mosaic. We are blessed by so many friends in our Winfield community whom embrace our mission of “Answering God’s call to serve.”

This is evidenced by the continued generosity of the people who attended our Partner in Possibilities luncheon last fall, and our local church congregations that share their hearts to ensure that many individuals in service have a meaningful Christmas. We are also appreciative of the Mosaic Ambassadors that share their time, talents, and enthusiasm to spread Mosaic’s mission and vision. My mantra in life is to have the “attitude of gratitude” and we have much to be grateful for in our community.
