BRT System in Tshwane The City of Tshwane on Wednesday started the construction of South Africa’s latest bus rapid transit (BRT) system in Arcadia, Hatfield. The R2.6-billion Tshwane BRT system, which formed part of the city’s revitalisation project, would comprise three depots and 51 stations on an 80 km route stretching through, besides others, the Pretoria central business district (CBD); Hatfield; Menlyn; Sunnyside; Akasia; Kopanong, in Soshanguve; Mamelodi and Pretoria North. Speaking at the construction site of the Arcadia street station, executive mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa said that the system would go live in April 2014 with the completion of the first phase of the project. Phase 1 would extend from Akasia to Menlyn, through Sunnyside and Hatfield, while Phase 2 would run from Rainbow Junction to Menlyn, through Pretoria North, the CBD and Hatfield.

and impact for residents,” said Ramokgopa. He commented that the system was based on the model used by the Rea Vaya BRT in Johannesburg. The Tshwane system would also implement an ownership model, where current licensed bus and taxi operators on the affected routes would eventually own, operate and manage the BRT. Johannesburg’s Rea Vaya opened its doors in August 2009 and Cape Town’s MyCiTi network was officially opened in 2011. Rustenburg is also planning a BRT system, with construction scheduled to start this month. The City of Tshwane aimed to operate the bus services along BRT trunk routes every three to five minutes during peak hours, with feeder services at the stations and terminals every 15 minutes to enable greater efficiency and ease of use for passengers.

The BRT system would operate between 05:00 and 20:30 from Monday to Saturday, and 07:00 and 19:00 on Sundays and public holidays. The city said the BRT would provide a “rapid, frequent, high-quality, affordable and convenient” public transport service that would improve urban mobility and integration. “Currently, 66% of peak-hour trips are made using private vehicles, leading to traffic congestion. Many economically deprived areas are entirely dependent on public transport,” he explained. The system would be named through a public voting competition ending on July 31. The proposed names for Tshwane’s BRT system were Maleka, meaning ‘roundabout’, A Re Veng, which means ‘let’s go’, Tsumaya, for ‘go’ and Dumela, which means ‘hello’.

The mayor noted that the entire system, which was yet to be named, would be operational by October 2015. The BRT system would require about 340 buses, some of which would be powered by gas, at a cost of about R1billion. Ramokgopa expected over 10 000 jobs to be created during the construction phase, and about 1 000 sustainable jobs once the system was live. These included 529 bus operators and related personnel, 94 employees for the proposed call centre and about 300 workers managing and maintaining the ticketing system. “Tshwane's bus rapid transit system will be integrated in partnership with existing public transport facilities, which will ferry passengers to and from BRT stations, improving efficiencies

Condition Monitoring Systems Systems or machines are by all means vital in the daily undertaken activities that could not be easily done by human strength. These activities are especially in the industrial fields and the mining sectors to name just but a few. Unlike man, who can harmoniously detect a breakdown of his own body system and act by himself without hurting others, systems break instantly and man, who effectively controls the systems cannot easily escape the dangers the come with a system's breakdown; fatal injuries and even immediate deaths are not easily gotten away with. However, such fatal emergencies can be avoided in advance. This is only via implementation of condition monitoring systems. Condition monitoring systems are available in different versions; they can either be portable or online. Portable systems for condition monitoring are ultimate for inspections and appropriate diagnosis in the machine park. Examples of them include data collectors plus vibration analyzers. Online condition monitoring systems on the other hand are ideal for automatic detection of changes in the conditions of a machine; they work autonomously thereby making them accurate

6

in timely detection of possible breakdown. With the latest technology, there are special portable condition monitoring systems that play multiple roles in ensuring conditions of machines. Such a system is the VIBXPERT II, which is an all-in-one data collector, field balancer as well as a vibration analyzer. A number of its special features include; user friendliness and intuitive operation, automatic switchbox support, fast measurements by use of trending spectra, long-lived battery as well as powerful diagnostic tools for troubleshooting machines. Abnormal vibrations produced by rotating machines as a result of unbalancing, misalignment, defective bearings, looseness and gear damage. Though the vibrations are experienced at intervals, VIBXPERT II is well inbuilt with tools to curb and to eradicate the problem. VIBXPERT II Balancer as a portable condition monitoring system that is portable, fault of unbalancing especially with the rotors equipment can easily and powerfully be handled. The balancer helps detect unbalances effectively thereby correcting the fault in advance. VIBXPERT II has with it special features that have shaped its outstanding performance,

which include one-hand operation that is manageable, powerful reporting tool, upgradability to vibration analyzer, 1 and 2 plane field balancing as well as machine diagnostic and integrated vibration analysis. Online condition monitoring systems are fast, reliable and powerful to protect assets such as machines with very high end technology. VIBGUARD is an example of advanced online condition monitoring system, which has 20 parallel channels, intelligent data reduction, DIN rail mountable, various configurations, continuous monitoring and seamless integration to control systems. It is most compatible to offer parallel and synchronous data acquisition, protects assets from unplanned shutdown and carries out high diagnostics to ensure high rate of productivity and measures time signals for all kinds of signal inputs. In order to perform in high depth of analysis and monitoring of turbo machinery, the VIBGAUARD is connected to the buffered outputs of real time protection systems. It is also swift in data processing, thus, it is suitable for protecting assets with much shorter running cycles like the machining tools and cranes. VIBGAUARD It is effective and offers high level of troubleshooting as it is also available in the portable version.

Building Entrances (5 Entrances) are announced by linear planting of different clipped heights and textures, ornamental gravel and rock design. The Main Entrance road from Jacob Street allows a moment's bird's eye view on the linear design concept leading the visitor in. Local rock from site (sandstone type of a deeper colour) were used in linear formation to form the focal element in the planting lines flanking the entrance road, with the planting in varying foliage texture and shades of green.

All elements are repeated throughout the landscape areas and intertwine a strong landscape concept that can be identified with the Heidelberg Mall.

Large expanses of gravel areas are intercepted through strong repetitive rock lines cutting into the gravel areas, creating depth in complementing stone texture and colour.

Diagonal lines are extended from the main traffic circle to the adjacent Northern Façade landscape. Ornamental gravel has been introduced to these areas as an additional element to the linear rock design and planting layers.

Fall Protection System Fall protection systems refers to equipments designed for workers who are vulnerable to lose their balance at height and elevated areas causing fatal injuries, the main role is to prevent and control fall from occurring. Employers are mandated to develop fall protection program that complies with the set rules, employees and employers should work together in identifying fall hazards which in return helps them in identifying the appropriate protection solutions against them, employees should undergo training on how to operate these systems so as to achieve maximum efficiency. There are various fall protection system deployed in modern world and their selection is done based on the identified health hazard, they include: Fall arrest system, positioning systems, body harnesses, lanyards, connectors, D-rings, anchorages, snap hooks and guardrail systems. The most preferred method of providing protection against fall is installation of built in controls, they entail handrails, stair rails, toe boards, over head

10

canopies, ladder cages, and the guardrail systems. Guardrail system is a vertical barrier consisting of top rail, mid rail and posts that prevents workers from falling to lower levels, hand rails provides handhold for the employees to grasp preventing them from falling, toe board is a low protective barrier designed to prevent workers from slipping over the edge of a surface. Body harness are gadgets that are made of straps secured on employees thighs, waist, shoulders, pelvis, waist and chest they are designed to minimize stress forces on a person's body in the event of a fall in addition to provision of adequate movement while working, a D ring is connected in the centre of back providing connections points for fall arrest devices. Lanyards are flexible straps that connects body harness to an anchorage point, there are vertical, horizontal and self retracting lanyards also known as lifelines. Connectors are devices used to connect parts of fall arrest together, it can be a single component for example carabineer or integral components such as snap hook

all , connectors must poses the following features: ability to lock with ease, must have a corrosion resistant finish, must be made of robust materials and smooth edges so as to prevent damages to the connecting parts of the system. Anchorage is a designed point of attachment for lifelines used to suspend and support platform and should be able to offer support of at least 5000 pounds per attached employee, anchors may be mounted permanently or temporary and examples are D-ring anchors, anchors straps, beam anchors, friction bolts and the D- bolt anchors. Fall protection systems needs proper maintenance and manufacturer's instructions must be followed to the later; this is achievable through inspection and checking for defects before use. Good maintenance entails keeping of equipments in dry areas, avoiding dropping of equipments on the ground and keeping them out of corrosive materials in addition to proper cleaning and drying.

The wall mounting heater with a backlight radiant heater creates a new experience in heating providing a soft expanding heat with a discreet presence. This is the best heater choice for home, office, public place or restaurant. It is suitable for both indoor outdoor usage. The portable propane radiant heaters use a disposable bottle of propane as fuel 18

source. These radiant heaters are intended for use in large open areas because they emit large amount of carbon monoxide which is hazardous in poorly ventilated spaces. These heaters have a high energy output hence they are favorable in very cold seasons. The heaters are manufactured for the sole purpose of benefiting the user; however, if they are not well handled or are mismanaged, they can be very harmful and dangerous to the user. The electric fan heater, for example, is an unsealed appliance with live electric parts inside, so it is not to be used in wet condition due to risk of short circuit that can lead to fire or electrocution which can cause death. Therefore, all heaters should be used at the right time and place and for the right purposes.

Electrical machinery and installation Electrical installation is a process in which electricity is transmitted from one point of control to a point of consumption anywhere on the premises; installation works entails the following activities connection of machinery at the supply terminals, extension and repair of an electrical installation, testing and inspection of electrical installation and testing and verification of installation. It is mandatory for installation electrician to have registered with electrical regulatory body in accordance with the terms of regulation and must have a certified copy of accreditation from the accreditation authority. Electrical machines are the equipment used in transmission of electricity; they are classified into Direct Current (D.C) and Alternating Current (A.C). Classification of electric machines is based on electric power supply, stator and rotor construction and National Electric Manufacturers Association Standards whereby their products are classified based on their operating features, quality, rating, testing,

22

tolerances as well as composition. Direct Current electric machinery are classified into permanent magnet and wound field, the Alternating Current on the other hand are classified into synchronous and induction, the A.C are used in large numbers in modern industry due to their advantages which includes: cost effectiveness, robust, higher speed, simplicity, ease of maintenance and simplicity. Electrical machines have got the following features: Rigid frame, slot whose purpose is to offer mechanical support and protection from abrasion, brushes which acts as an interface between external circuit and the armature winding, armature winding which refers to continuous winding which has neither beginning nor the end and it is composed of a number of coils in a series, rotor which is cylindrical in shape and it carries the armature winding, stator which is a hollow cylinder made of magnetic circuit and its function is to carry the field winding, the Commutator which rotates the rotor

and it plays role of rectifying the induced voltage. Electric machines are applicable in some of these areas: Gasoline engine drives, compressors, air handling equipment, electronic locomotives, wind energy turbines, blowers and fans, conveyors and crushers. Electrical machines are subjected to defects which include mechanical failure of rotor, vibration and noise bearings and mechanical faults of the stator, but the good news is that this problem are reversible upon early detection through extensive testing. Routine test program entail: Bearing control, short circuit test, insulation control, voltage test, vibration measurements, resistance measurements and it is important to identify problem by performing generator functional test.

Institutes are often research and educational organizations which are created to research on specific topics. In different countries, institutes are part of the universities or other institutions of higher education. There are various types of institutes with different faculties such as the institute of Science, institute of fine art, institute of architecture among others. In many developed countries, institutes serve as alternatives to the traditional universities. Institutes vary both within countries and among countries and this make it difficult to describe them as a group or to classify them. They offer a greater flexibility, greater access, more equity and more economic and occupational goals than universities. Institutes seem to have taken shape in distinct groupings partly because of sharing practices among countries. They are not always comparable due to their different roles and responsibilities with respect to countries. They are developed in different ways in different countries depending on the need to expand tertiary

education .The emergence of institutes has played a great role in the expansion of the postsecondary education during the last three or four decades. However, institutes partly reflect a reaction against universities which has been seen in different countries as too rigid, too academic and often too expensive. In some countries, institutes have been instituted in order to upgrade the status of older vocational programs. Institutes have caused a major transformation in many advanced nations due to the emergence of knowledge revolution. This transformation has increased the skills required for new occupations and increased international competition because no developed country would want to fall in the category of undeveloped countries due to the need of greater levels of education and training. The hierarchy of institutes is established by the kind of degrees offered, by the selectivity of institute and by the resources per student. Institutes offer academic programs and occupational programs and some of these institutes have been created by consolidating many smaller specialized vocational programs to make a big institute. One of the clear purposes of institutes in every country that has them, is that they are smaller and more numerous than universities. They are therefore spread throughout country and provide a closer access to much of the population than do universities. They create regional educational centers, including those located in remote and rural areas. They also easier to access and cheaper, therefore are favorable to lower income students. In addition, the research and public service carried out in the institutes is generally focused on local economic development.

Lifts and Escalators Lifts and escalators are a modern and developing invention that is used for carrying people and goods in between floors. The escalator is a conveyor transport device or a transport device made of a motor driven chain that is linked with steps that move up or down on tracks allowing the step treads to remain horizontal while the lift is a cabin like device that is used to carry goods or people from one floor of a building to another. Escalators are universally used in shopping malls, transit systems, department stores, and some stadiums, hotels, in many airports, convention centers and public buildings to move people around. They are installed like the staircase; an escalator that is not in service can be used as a staircase. The first model of escalator was made in 1859 by Nathan Ames; however, this model was made of revolving stairs rather than on a motor driven chain. Today, escalators are often powered by constant alternating current motors with steps made of stainless steel or aluminum that move on a system of tracks in a continuous motion. There are different types of configuration which are; the

parallel that has up and down escalators side by side or separated by a distance they are used in metro stations, the crisscross which minimizes space requirements by installing escalators that move towards the same direction in one area, mainly used in department stores and the multiple parallel configuration that has two or more escalators together

moving on one direction

Lifts include the electric lifts, hydraulic lifts and home lifts. Electric lifts make several trips per day; their components such as the magnetic switch, the cabin, cabin door among other things offer maximum reliability, robustness and accuracy. They have a high commutation speed that allows detection of all floors even when the cabin is in a high speed. Hydraulic lifts have a hydraulic ram and a fluid driven piston that is mounted inside a cylinder. They are fitted with two monostable magnetic switches mounted on the cabin and connected to a safety module to enhance the safety of the lift. The home lift is a special kind of lift that does not have a cabin door. There are other types of lifts that include; car lift, passenger lift, residential lift, dumb waiter lift and platform lift among others. Both escalators and lifts are very important in the modern society as they help in reducing passengers' traffic in urban areas; they also ease access to tall buildings. The high technology, high level education and ability among personnel and engineers has led to the designing and manufacturing of highly specialized lifts and escalators that provide the highest quality of vertical and horizontal transport of people and goods in between buildings. They are engineered to offer comfort and safety, they provide true reliability and efficient transport to passengers worldwide, however, they are prone to damage and break down if they are mismanaged and can lead to accidents. Therefore, lifts and escalators should be handled with care and managed well.

modern inventions because their existence is linked to the invention of fire many centuries ago, though they were in an open place and in an open fire unlike today, when they are well furnished rooms. The modern kitchens have been redesigned and refurnished from the middle age type of kitchens, they have been equipped with stoves, cold and hot water running sinks, refrigerators, kitchen cabinets, microwaves, ovens, dishwashers and other electric appliances. Did you know that in the middle ages kitchens were used as a measure of wealth? In the middle age, only the wealthy people built up several kitchens

in their homes and these kitchens were divided based on the type of food prepared in them. In ancient Greece, rooms in a house were arranged around a central courtyard with an open patio left to serve as kitchen. The common folk in the Roman Empire did their cooking in large public kitchens as they did not have kitchens of their own but the wealthy folk had well equipped kitchens operated by their slaves. A new change in kitchens was brought by technology. The 16th century iron stove was transformed into the modern gas stove and electric stove. During the era of industrialization, the kitchen floors were tiled and the kitchenware

was neatly arranged in a cupboard to protect them from dirt and steam. A large workbench was set with several chairs around it and this served as the dining table. When rationalization, the increase in gasification and electrification, came to be, fitted kitchens were made whose aim was to optimize kitchen work to reduce cooking time. The Frankfurt Kitchen was the first standardized kitchen and it had fitting or unit. This fitting was refined in the Swedish kitchen which had wooden cabinets Today, kitchens have been redesigned, refined and refurnished with respect to new technology, resources, abilities and education. This has resulted into

different forms of kitchens depending on the arrangement of kitchen cabinets, sink, stove and refrigerator. This forms include; the double file kitchen, the G kitchen, the single file kitchen, the block kitchen, the U kitchen and the A kitchen. In the double file kitchen, there are two rows of cabinets at opposite walls one having the stove and the sink and the other with the refrigerator. Single file kitchen has the stove, sink and refrigerator along one wall. U kitchen has cabinets along three walls forming a U with the sink at the base. G kitchen is like the U kitchen but with a partial fourth wall with a double basin sink. L kitchen has the cabinets occupying two adjacent walls.

There are various types of kitchens which include the canteen kitchen, restaurant, hotel and hospital kitchens. There are also other types of kitchens with respect to geographical positioning or region such as China kitchens, Japan kitchens, the African allure, English style, French flair and the Swedish style among others.

Concrete Equipments way that makes the equipment operate effectively and hence well versed for good service delivery and maintenance. CA 1300 single drum roller's engine is in such a way that it is perpendicularly to the frames while the hydraulic pumps are in line with the engine. Thus, the users of the equipment can easily reach the required components from both the engine and the hydraulic pump. In respect to the arrangement of the engine, the entire roller is able to distribute the weight at an optimal level. CA 1300 roller comes with a special feature known as ejector exhaust outlet that helps minimize engine noise and also puts off the dust from penetrating into the engine section.

Construction work could have been a difďŹ cult and tiresome job if it happened that only man should perform it manually. Any given construction project would be taking ages to no completion since its commencement. Therefore, it is a big thanks to the ancient innovators whom by their intelligence and great knowledge of art and design that they innovated the socalled concrete equipments, which have always made the construction projects a simple exercise when they are

knowledgeably controlled by man and hence making all the project's work unproblematic and faultless. These concrete equipments are available in a wide range and are each designed to perform diverse number of construction tasks in a special manner. CA 1300 single-drum soil roller is equipment that is designed to operate on parking lot, road, street as well as utility pipe projects. The roller's engine and the hydraulic pumps are mounted on it in a

For activities such as operation of pneumatic tools and sandblasting, construction contractors are provided with a reliable amount of air by a XAS 185 portable compressor. This compressor has added beneďŹ ts like being economical, compact and efďŹ cient. XAS 185 portable compressor has several features that make it better equipment. One is a 49-horsepower Kubota diesel engine, which complies with the acceptable emission standards. Long distance transportation of concrete mixture is made effective in construction by the use of concrete mixer trucks. Such trucks are preferred as they prevent concrete coagulation effectively, avoid stratiďŹ cation of the concrete as well as ensure quality and proper speed of construction. Concrete plant can currently operate with suitable storage equipments referred to as silos. Silos act as effective cement bins, thus, when installed properly considering aspects such as

safety and reliability bulky cement is safely stored. The silos can have material level system installed in them, which enables the contractors to vividly see the position and the quantity of the stored cement. Other types of concrete mixers include JDC series concrete mixer and the S serial double horizontal shaft compulsion mixer. The JDC series mixer has a gear box driven to discharge concrete and it is to control for its movement. On the other hand, S serial double horizontal shaft compulsion mixer mixes hard and dry concrete. It is a multi-functional mixer whose features are high mixing quality, energy saving, reduced noise, efďŹ ciency and its structure is simple.
