MB Believes:

A Vision Becoming Reality Over the course of two years, Moses Brown convened over a thousand experts and community members for hundreds of hours to answer one essential question: If MB has led the way in educating children for over two centuries, what should we do to extend that legacy in a knowledge environment that is nothing like the world has ever known? Most institutional failures can be traced to an inability to adapt. However, one must be both bold and prudent when steering a place as historic as MB. In those discussions, several things emerged: Quaker values have always been, and must continue to be, our lodestar. Bolstered by academic and corporate research, our planning process identified three abilities students need to be successful in the 21st century: Expert Thinking, Global Awareness, and Ethical Leadership. Expert Thinking is the ability to synthesize information, to improvise, prototype, and redesign in quick iterative cycles with a diverse team of contributors to find the optimal solution. Global Awareness is the combination of firsthand experience with other people and places, the ability to communicate in other languages, and having the intellectual rigor to consider issues from a multitude of perspectives. And Ethical Leadership is what we’ve done well for 233 years and counting. Our vision and strategic plan MB Believes is being activated thanks to a historic $56.5 million fundraising campaign (total goal now exceeds $65M—see page 38). This plan will support nine concrete investments in learning, people, and place—outlined in the pages that follow—that adapt the MB experience to the 21st century while preserving its timeless strengths. Having now raised over $44 million, with students performing at the Woodman Center, inventing in the Y-Lab, and ecstatic about their TRIPs around the world, it’s clear that the plan is working. This is progress to be proud of, and there is still much to do. Together we defined this vision. Together we can achieve it.

Expert Thinking Model

What is it?

What happened?

In a world where knowledge is growing at a rapid pace, tomorrow’s leaders need to be experts at using available information rather than merely memorizing facts. The Expert Thinking Model teaches children to integrate skills, apply knowledge, and work in teams to solve real-world problems. In order to accelerate this kind of applied learning across the school, MB seeks endowed funding for a program in Engineering & Design Learning, and for the systematic use of Project-Based Learning in each division.

Math League. • MB 5th and 10th graders presented their work at the Providence College Project-Based Learning Conference.

TRIps (Travel, Research, and Immersion Programs)

What is it?

What happened?

TRIPs—the Travel, Research, and Immersion Programs— foster a rising generation of civic-minded, multilingual, and ethical global citizens. New courses and a broad array of travel opportunities help students explore cultures, life experiences, and worldviews different from their own, while a marine education program will allow students to investigate the ecology and resources of the Narragansett Bay. Because these educational experiences are so transformative, we believe they need to be a critical part of a Moses Brown education for every student, regardless of financial circumstances. To that end, we are asking donors to help us endow this important aspect of our curriculum.

Where are we?

• 403 students and 47 faculty participated in overnight TRIPs: upper school 120 (29%)

Young Learners Center

What is it?

What happened?

The Young Learners Center is a 13,000-square-foot expansion to MB’s lower school, designed to support the way children learn in the 21st century. By bringing the programs that serve all grades—science, art, music, and library—back under one roof, this updated facility will promote experiential learning, integrated thinking, and group collaboration.

The relocation of MB’s heating plant to the Woodman Center has dramatically opened up design options for the Young Learners Center.

What’s Next?

In addition to revising architectural plans, we are also reimagining the lower school experience from the inside out. A full-time student counselor for grades N-6, an innovative and challenging math sequence, regular classes in the Y-lab, and an all-new music curriculum have already begun to enrich lower school learning.

Moses Brown Thanks You Our community thrives because so many people contribute in so many ways: volunteering time, sharing expertise, and supporting the school financially. When we each do what we can, the results are dazzling. In the following pages, we thank every one of last year’s contributors to MB Believes: A Campaign for Learning, People, and Place, listed according to their roles in the 2016-17 school year.

The Grove

The Front Circle

MB’s most loyal contributors

MB’s annual leadership contributors

Moses Brown School’s mission is focused on inspiring the inner promise of each child.

The Front Circle recognizes those who have made gifts of $1,000 or more in the last fiscal year. Record levels of philanthropy to the priorities of MB Believes—including The Moses Brown Fund— are fueling a dynamic period of growth and innovation, extending and amplifying our 233year traditions of ethical leadership and academic excellence. Levels of membership within The Front Circle are denoted by the key on each page.

In our work to build philanthropic support for today’s students and teachers, we also value the ways each person contributes to MB. With this values-centered approach in mind, we created The Grove to recognize our most loyal contributors. Members have given to MB for at least five consecutive years, starting on July 1, 2012 and ending June 30, 2017. Years of consecutive giving are noted in italicized numbers following the donor’s name. Based on the limitations of MB’s electronic donor records, 33 years of consecutive giving is the maximum we are able to confirm.

The Obadiah Brown Society More than 200 years ago, Moses Brown’s son Obadiah (1771-1822) established a model of giving for all who care about MB. His gift of $100,000 – at that time, the largest single bequest given to an educational institution in the United States – built a strong financial foundation for the school. The Obadiah Brown Society recognizes and honors members of the community who have thoughtfully provided for MB in their wills and other estate plans. Mark Richard Alperin ’76 Frohman C. In Memoriam, Russ Carpenter ’59 In 2014, Russ Carpenter ’59 made the single-largest contribution to MB’s endowment through a bequest in his estate plan to create the Russell Carpenter ‘59 Program in Teaching Excellence. He is believed to be among the longest-serving Board members in MB history, havng been a trustee for 14 years over three different terms. “Russ Carpenter’s gift will more than double our professional development budget. We can’t thank Russ enough for his support of the single most important thing at the school; our teachers—it’s magical.” –Matt Glendinning

Russ Carpenter ’59 was profoundly influenced by MB–and exhibited a profound influence on it. With an unprecedented $3.6 million gift in 2014, he provided tremendous support for faculty travel and development, new classes and team teaching opportunities, and nationally-competitive salaries for Moses Brown teachers. Russ passed away in September, 2017, but he leaves behind an enduring legacy of world-class teaching for generations of students to come. “Teaching is what Moses Brown is about,” Russ said in 2014. “It’s what it has always done best. And so to my mind, it’s the most important part of the school to support.” A former Rhodes Scholar and alumnus of Princeton, Oxford, and Yale Law School, Russ was a prominent attorney in Washington, D.C. He lived, worked, and traveled in more than 65 countries, spoke Russian, and was fluent in French—a life-long passion developed at MB with Ted Whitford, one of MB’s Grand Masters.

Enrollment and Scholarship Overview While the size and quality of the applicant pool have all remained fairly stable over the last decade, scholarship demand has increased dramatically—providing the single greatest challenge to MB’s sustained excellence. Prior to the financial crisis of 2007-08, approximately 40% of applicants requested financial assistance. Ten years later, 72% of applicants for 2017-18 school year applied for scholarship support. MB has met the challenge by doubling the scholarship budget since 2008-09 to $3.8 million. As demand continues to grow, urgency has increased to meet the $15 million endowed scholarship objective of the MB Believes campaign. 800

Endowment fuels the future

Like a smooth-running machine, Moses Brown’s fiscal engine is powered by income received through tuition, charitable donations, and annual distributions from endowed funds. Endowed funds, like 401k or 529 accounts, are saved and invested today for a specific purpose tomorrow. Endowment distributions help us provide the best education possible— supporting great teaching, academic and co-curricular programs, and scholarship.

just $23 million. With the ultimate success of MB Believes, the school will add over $28 million in new gifts to the school’s endowment, more than doubling its size. Thanks to recent fundraising success and market growth, as of June 30, 2017, MB’s endowment stood at $30.78 million. To secure MB’s reputation and strength, the school needs to build the financial resources to attract the best teachers and students and provide them with truly world-class facilities and programs. This campaign has the potential to catapult MB to a much stronger position among peer schools regionally and nationally.

MB Believes is an opportunity to secure the financial future of Moses Brown. At the start of the campaign in 2013, and amassed over nearly 230 years, MB had an endowment of
