Computer Programming with the Micro:bit! Ages 10–14

June 24–June 28

Half-day: 8:45–11:30 a.m.

Learn to program your own pocket-size computer! Campers will explore computer programming with J-Blocks, a drag and drop coding editor, and then progress to a more formal programming language, Python, all while working with the micro:bit. The micro:bit is an inexpensive, pocket-size codable computer. It is a system-on-chip with 25 LED lights, two programmable buttons, a compass, and motion and temperature sensors. Since the micro:bit editors are all web-based, campers may continue to work on their projects at home during and after the class! Campers will learn programming by building and coding a stopwatch, a thermometer, a traffic light, and a pedometer. Individuals will then select from a variety of more advanced projects. At the conclusion of the session, each student will receive their own micro:bit kit to build fun projects for the rest of the summer! No prior experience with programming necessary!

Laurie Center

Laurie is the Director of STEM Education at Moses Brown and teaches computer programming to students ranging from nursery students with the Code-a-pillar to upper school students with AP Computer Science Principles. She believes physical computing (writing code that controls physical devices), empowers youngsters to learn programming more quickly, builds their self-confidence, and captures their imaginations.

Down City Design: Inventor Studio Ages 8–11

July 15–19 or July 22–26 or July 29–Aug. 2 Half-day: 8:45–11:30 a.m.

Give your budding inventor the chance to design, experiment, and dream up new ideas! DownCity Design’s Inventor Studio offers campers ages 8–11 a fun introduction to the process that designers and inventors use to create products that solve problems and make the world a better place. Through hands-on design challenges, students will develop confidence and practice STEAM skills while learning to innovate, communicate their ideas, and work as part of a team. Each week, campers are presented with a community need and work together to imagine something they could create to meet that need. With the guidance of our experienced design educators, they’ll sketch their ideas, experiment with new materials as they prototype and test their concepts, get feedback to make their designs stronger, and present their final pitch. There will be a brand new design challenge to tackle each week, so campers can participate in multiple sessions and continue to develop new skills.

Coach Paul Janaway directs the Soccer Camp, which is a serious endeavor with coaches expecting full attention and effort. The camp is always a tremendous amount of fun. The program remains a favorite among parents and children because of Paul’s inspirational, encouraging, and educational coaching style. The clinics emphasize developing individual skills for competitive play. Players, grouped by age and skill, gain a better understanding of the game, sharpen skills, strengthen tactical awareness, and improve fitness. Campers may choose to attend full or half days (8:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. or 3:00 p.m.) from June 17 through August 2.
