Alumni Hall was built as the main gathering space for MB in 1867 – when the total student body was 225. 150 years later – with 770 students, 17 different performance groups and a thriving middle and upper school theater program – the time has most certainly come for a new central gathering and performance space. Introducing the Woodman Community & Performance Center.

Located at the center of our 33-acre campus, this 25,295 square foot multifunctional facility is designed to be the physical heart of Moses Brown. Sitting at the crossroads of all three divisions, it connects elegantly to a renovated Walter Jones Library and provides dynamic new spaces for our entire community to learn, play, perform, worship, and celebrate.

The main floor of the performance hall features a two-story set design shop, an attractive cafĂŠ lobby area, and significant storage to facilitate a multiplicity of uses and floor set-up arrangements â&#x20AC;&#x201C; from exhibitions of student work to performances, from Meeting for Worship to student dances, from special guest speakers to community social events. The lower level of the library will undergo extensive renovation resulting in new archival storage and research rooms, as well as the construction of restrooms to service the entire complex.

The vision for the Woodman Family Center includes the development of vibrant outdoor gathering and community spaces that will come to serve as the nexus of the campus, physically connecting all three divisions. These spaces create new pathways that will facilitate spontaneous connections and encourage learning in both formal and informal ways.

Encouraging interconnections across our community is at the heart of the building design. The glass-enclosed lobby and outdoor patio together form a comfortable, well-lit cafĂŠ where students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni can gather throughout the day to socialize, collaborate, and build stronger relationships.

Drawing on Quaker traditions, the seating in the main hall is flexible enough to enable everyone to face the center, and it accommodates up to 500 people for Meeting for Worship. This allows the entire upper school to worship together comfortably for the first time in many years.

Students in every division, including those in our thriving middle and upper school theater programs and 17 music and performance ensembles, will enjoy a state-of-the-art performance venue. The Woodman Family Center features full raked seating and a three-quarter balcony with clear sight lines from every seat in the house. This configuration is also ideal for hosting special guest speakers, films, student presentations and a variety of community gatherings.

A full catwalk, well-equipped sound and lighting control room, and professional-grade lighting and sound reinforcement ensure our actors, dancers, and musicians will be supported by the latest advancements in technical theater. They also offer new opportunities to teach the technical aspects of theatre production.

The hall is designed with maximum seating flexibility in mind, allowing the stage to take a variety of forms, from traditional to thrust to theatre in the round â&#x20AC;&#x201C; offering broad creative license to our faculty and performers. Seating can also be set in different configurations to accommodate events of varying sizes, some of which are shown on the plans to the right.

Uniquely designed for more than performance and worship, the main hall can be easily converted into a flat-floored multi-purpose space twice the size of the Sinclair Room. To facilitate this unique functionality, a large bank of theater-style raked seats folds back into the wall and a hydraulic floor that creates a fully raked seating arrangement can be made completely flat.

With the flat floor configuration, the main hall becomes an ideal space for student exhibitions, dances, lower school classroom/unit celebrations, and it offers endless possibilities for hosting community and social events.

The Woodman Family Center connects to a completely renovated Walter Jones Library via an enclosed glass bridge. The main floor and mezzanine of the library will be re-made, creating dynamic new spaces for classes, research, and quiet study. The interconnected buildings will also allow for the main floor of Walter Jones to be used for larger gatherings before and after events.

The lower level of Walter Jones (not shown) will also be transformed into useable space, allowing for the creation of a new archives storage and research facility. Over 230 years, the school has amassed a robust collection of artifacts, books, documents, and photos. The new spaces in lower level of our library will help to preserve these historic treasures for future generations and make the collection much more accessible as an active resource for research and exploration.
