About Moses Brown Moses Brown School was founded in 1784 by a Quaker entrepreneur who partnered with Samuel Slater to launch the American Industrial Revolution in Pawtucket, R.I. Located on 33 acres in urban Providence, the school enrolls 780 students ages 3-18 and sends 100% of its graduates to some of the nation’s most selective colleges and universities. In the two centuries since, Moses Brown has been a place that nurtures the unique talents and attributes of children, urges them on toward new levels of self-discovery and achievement and always insists on a rigorous commitment to integrity. MB's academic program is a multi-disciplinary liberal arts curriculum that integrates broad-based understanding with strong analytical and communication skills. Every discipline requires students to read with insight, speak persuasively, and write clearly. Socratic and inquiry-based teaching nurtures initiative, self-confidence, and openness to new perspectives. MB's athletic programs yield teams that are successful on and off the field, and our studentathletes regularly go on to compete at the college level in all divisions. Actors, musicians and fine artists attend some of the most prestigious arts colleges, and student and alumni writers are frequently published. Moses Brown alumni excel in a broad range of human endeavors—Emmy-winning producers, leading technology entrepreneurs, doctors called in to deal with terrible pandemics and social activists who dedicate themselves to lives of service. We hope you enjoy your time at MB. If you find it as engaging and stimulating as we do, we hope you’ll consider joining our community. Come back for a visit—we’d love to see you.

What Makes Moses Brown Different? Moses Brown is a Quaker school.

Quakerism holds that we all have an Inner Light and are equally deserving of dignity and respect. Since the 17th century, this has afforded a genuine welcome to people of all faiths. The central practice of Friends is Quaker meeting for worship, an extended period of shared silence and reflection. Open to all, meeting invites participants to reflect inwardly and if so moved, to share a message with the community. For two centuries, these beliefs and practices have placed Quakers at the forefront of education with an unwavering commitment to giving and being one’s personal best. Students learn to respect themselves and others, and demonstrate that respect by doing good work and serving other people.

In an educational setting this means three things:

Everyone matters. Quaker pedagogy insists that we care for each other as a community, hearing and respecting everyone’s voice and making sure that school is a safe place for every child. Silence matters. A practice of reflection and inquiry is essential to living a life of meaning and purpose. In a busy world, these skills are often overlooked. At Moses Brown, we all make time to reflect, to be thoughtful and to ask probing questions. Truth matters. For more than two centuries, MB has fostered in students a foundation of personal integrity and respect for others, including the non-violent resolution of conflict and a desire to make a positive difference in the world. Thoughts from our Head of School, Matt Glendinning "Our time-tested values and liberal arts curriculum, coupled with new programs and facilities, create a holistic and powerful model for 21st-century education. We seek to provide foundational knowledge, skills, and experiences to help students explore a complicated world from multiple perspectives. We value experiential learning, where students work in teams to solve authentic problems that don’t have simple yes-or-no answers. And we honor humankind’s accumulated wisdom and literature, even while pushing students to become conversant with emergent fields like coding and entrepreneurship. While I take great pride in all we do, what I most appreciate are the human connections, the depth of relationships and the shared Quaker values that make Moses Brown a community like no other." Dr. Matt Glendinning has been Moses Brown's head of school since 2009. He has led the MB community through its most ambitious capital campaign to-date, redefining the educational landscape and preparing students for success in a rapidly changing world.

Discover What's Inside Y-Lab With leading-edge technology like 3D printers, laser routers, and digital prototyping software–and lowtech modeling materials like sticky notes, cardboard, and glue guns–the 5,000-square-foot Y-Lab is Moses Brown’s home base for Expert Thinking. It’s a place where inventors, tinkerers, and creators of all ages can work independently and interdependently to discover solutions to the questions we have yet to ask. Woodman Family Community & Performance Center Opened in 2016, the Woodman Center is a facility like no other. With a completely-reconfigurable main hall, it can turn from a 500-seat theater to an empty box, or anything in between. This space is utlizied by numerous groups on campus, from theater and music performances to presentations to Meeting for Worship. Additionally, the Woodman Center has two floors of gallery space and a variety of seating options suitable for studying, lounging or just relaxing with friends. Three Oaks Studio / Hoffman House Art Studios Three Oaks Studio houses work spaces for painting, drawing, ceramics, pottery, and an expansive wood shop. Students in kindergarten and above use the facilities as they learn techniques and materials for rendering their own visions. With tremendous natural light, age-appropriate tools, and right-sized workbenches, the Three Oaks studio is a favorite spot for students who like to make, create and explore. Hoffman House is home to two large studios for middle and upper school artists, offering courses in printmaking, textiles and fashion design, painting and even a darkroom for film and digital photography.

Middle House In addition to administrative offices, Middle House is home to classes in all three divisions and the primary cafeteria. One of the joys of the MB community is seeing lower, middle and upper school students pass one another in the hallway, calling out greetings to friends of different ages and building a shared sense of community that transcends grades. Middle House is also home to the lower school library and science lab. Friends Hall Friends Hall houses World Language, Science, and some Math classrooms, as well as the College Counseling and Head of Upper School’s offices. It also provides spaces for social gathering, quiet study and grab-and-go dining in Marc’s Place. During the warmer months, no place is more popular than the front deck of Friends Hall. Walter Jones Library Originally constructed as a gymnasium in the early 1900s, the Walter Jones Library was converted in 1978, and completely renovated as part of the Woodman Family Community & Performance Center. With multiple volumes and databases, and a full-time library staff of three, the Walter Jones library is modeled on evidence-based best practices for 21st-century library design. It contains classrooms, quiet study rooms, reading pods and flexible spaces for teaching, research, and presentation. Lower School From the moment you step inside, Moses Brown’s lower school challenges children’s assumptions and encourages to think and play in new ways. In addition to classrooms for nursery–fifth grade, lower school has a dedicated music room, two playgrounds for children of all ages, and direct access to Campanella Field and the outdoor track for those times when kids need to get the wiggles out before the next learning unit. Athletic Facilities With two full-length basketball courts, a four-lane track, strength training, and medical facilities, the Waughtel-Howe Field House is well-equipped to help student-athletes cultivate their best efforts, and provides a fun place for exercise and play. Campanella Field is home to Moses Brown’s football, lacrosse, and field hockey teams. With a quarter-mile track, longjump pit, and high-jump area, it’s also an ideal training ground for trackand-field athletes. The Wasserman Soccer Field is situated just behind middle house, and in addition to being one of the main playing areas for boys’ and girls’ varsity teams, it also hosts junior varsity and middle school teams, and P.E. classes during the day. In 2016, the McCullough Baseball Diamond was completely renovated, including a new infield, outfield, backstop, dugout areas, and scoreboard. The Moran Softball Diamond is expected to have several upcoming renovations as well. The Cooper Tennis Courts has six newly-renovated outdoor tennis courts that feature an updated playing surface, all-new netting, and comfortable, convenient spectator seating with parking nearby. A fun and flexible space, Mann Field hosts varsity athletes, middle school introductory teams, and lower school play throughout the academic year.
