s?? Mose ing ou do y e r a what here? back

I've bee n thinkin the amaz g about ing thing s you've with my done school. As MB's treasur first er, it oc curs to I don't me that know mu ch abou financia t its l health .

Well, if you'd like to know more, I can introduce you to the experts. Come with me...

This is shaun buckler, our director of finance and operations.

Matt tells me you can illuminate our school's finances.

we take pride in being transparent with our bookkeeping.

this is hugh madden, director of admissions.

Sir, It's an honor.

As you can see, moses, with an average enrollment target of 766, we stayed strong through a difficult recession.

...but to do that, we had to provide a lot more financial aid to a lot more people, both to enroll talented new students and retain current families.

The marketplace clearly appreciates the value of a moses brown education, as applications are up to 493 from a recession-low of 460, and are on track to top our pre-recession goal of 500.

And our attrition rate is only 5%, well below the 8-9% industry average. So we know families continue to perceive value once they're here. the recession required that we offer financial aid to many families who never needed it before. that is especially hard here, since we're 89% tuition-dependent, and The financial aid budget is 12.6% of our total revenue.

matt, I don't see how this is sustainable without some other source of income.

you're absolutely right. let's go talk to ron dalgliesh, director of development.

Hi moses, let's talk fundraising.

the parents of the class of 2014 raised a record $1.94 million for the Senior Parent Gift, with 87% participation‌

Russ carpenter '59 gave $3.6 million to endow a program in world-class teaching...

and dean woodman '46 pledged $5 million for the woodman community and performance center. an anonymous donor gave $1.5 million for a sailing and marine education center on narragansett bay...

...and we raised over $1 million last year for the moses brown fund.

what kind soul gives $1 million to the Moses Brown Fund?

oh it's not one person--it's a team effort by alumni, parents, grandparents, and so many more. everyone gives what they can, and it adds up fast.

"Moses Brown provided us with an exceptional academic experience. MB is a community and our relationship with the school didn't end at graduation. we support MB so it can continue to provide that experience to today’s students." -Matt ’95 and Jessie ‘97 Cornelius

"From exceptional teachers to project-based learning to instilling integrity and a sense of community into our children, Moses Brown is shaping the leaders of the future. Contributing to the Moses Brown Fund is our small way of helping make those possibilities a reality.” -Meg and Kent Tunnicliffe P’21

2013-2014 Fundraising Efforts $13.85m Total fundraising -a new record! $1.019m MB Fund -Second best year ever! 1,704 Total Contributors 815 Alumni 423 Current Parents 253 Parents of Alumni 124 Grandparents 100 Faculty & Staff 370 Front Circle Society ($1000+) contributors -a new record!

“Growing up in Portugal, I was given a wonderful opportunity to get an education through scholarship. It changed my life. Now that I’m here at MB, I give to help the students at Moses Brown.” - Joseph Ribeiro, Athletic and Physical Education Equipment Manager

you see, these gifts to the moses brown fund are invested in some of our most important day-t0-day work, including...

Wow, matt. this is a robust fundraising enterprise. the endowment must be fantastic.

Actually, moses, it's quite low for an institution of our vibrance and longevity.

but we have a great group of alumni working hard on our investment committee to grow the existing endowment.

institutions much younger than ours have significantly larger endowments, but we hope to double our endowment via fundraising over the next 3-5 years.

i see. so Fundraising and endowment covers what tuition can't?

exactly. Last year the endowment provided $736,000 for very specific pieces of the budget.

for faculty support...

like the leonard miller '51 fund that provides unique travel and study opportunities for our teachers.

Many endowed funds support educational programs‌

like the class of 2011 fund that supports service-learning initiatives.

...and scholarships that will continue in perpetuity.

Such as the evan spirito '06 fund established in evan's memory by his family and friends.

, well is a s i h , t matt inancial f d u've soli nd yo d a , e r l pictu some bo d i a l s. plan

but if I may be candid, I think you'll need to raise some more money.

thank you, sir.

you know, moses, i think you're probably right. In fact, I've been thinking...

Moses?? well, see you around, i guess...
