2D Studio: Sticker Your World STEM Grades 7–12
July 6–10
Photo by Javon Swaby from Pexels
Half-day: 8:45–11:30 a.m. You see them everywhere—on water bottles, laptops, car windows, notebooks and road signs. Stickers are a fun, colorful, and creative means of self-expression; and in this camp, you will get to design and create your own stickers and vinyl decals! Campers will learn about 2D design through the Silhouette Cameo hardware and software system. The Cameo is an electronic cutting machine that can cut designs out from paper, vinyl, fabric and other materials. Campers will learn about design principles which they can incorporate into producing their own hand-designed graphics, text or digital images. They’ll use software tools to convert their designs to digital outlines for producing custom-cut decals. During the week, we will engage in brainstorming activities in which students will generate ideas for messages they wish to express in their designs. Projects will include making full-color paper sticker sheets with multiple copies of a single design, as well as single-color vinyl decals. Campers may join other MB camps in the afternoon but must register separately.
David Wasser
Dave teaches technology in MB’s middle and upper school and coaches the VEX Robotics teams in those two divisions. He is passionate about using technology to challenge the traditional divide between “right brain” and “left brain” and seeks to nurture creative problemsolving skills in his students. Dave is also an amateur musician and a founder of the nonprofit Ukulele Hall of Fame Museum, which he hopes will one day be a permanent public repository for his collection of ukuleles and ephemera. His favorite tech projects combine mathematical thinking with the production of music and art.

Creative Computing with JavaScript Grades 6–8
June 22–26 Half-day: 8:45–11:30 a.m. Campers in the JavaScript course will learn the basics of this popular programming language through a hands-on, projectbased curriculum that introduces them to the fundamentals of object-oriented programming. They’ll learn about sequencing, functions and arguments, properties, variables, arrays, loops, randomness, conditionals and more. Through the standards-aligned, web-based tutorials, campers will discover ways that coding is employed in a wide variety of industries—from entertainment to TV news, fashion to environmental science. Along with the coding instruction, students will learn about computer science and practice 21st century skills such as collaboration, global awareness and public speaking. Campers will flex their creative and technical muscles through a series of engaging projects. They will code their own videos, create filters, design original graphic effects, animate motivational memes and develop interactive maps. Extra time will be given each day for experimenting and exploring beyond the curriculum. Campers may join other MB camps in the afternoon but must register separately.

Ages 10–14
June 22–June 26

Half-day: 8:45–11:30 a.m. Learn to program your own pocket-size computer! Campers will explore computer programming with J-Blocks, a drag and drop coding editor, and then progress to a more formal programming language, Python, all while working with the micro:bit. The micro:bit is an inexpensive, pocket-size codable computer. It is a system-on-chip with 25 LED lights, two programmable buttons, a compass, and motion and temperature sensors. Since the micro:bit editors are all webbased, campers may continue to work on their projects at home during and after the class! Campers will learn programming by building and coding a stopwatch, a thermometer, a traffic light and a pedometer. Individuals will then select from a variety of more advanced projects. At the conclusion of the session, each student will receive their own micro:bit kit to build fun projects for the rest of the summer! No prior experience with programming necessary!

Digital Fabrication & Design Ages 10–13
June 22–26 Half-day: 8:45–11:30 a.m. Do you love using computers? Do you enjoy designing and building things? Want to use the laser cutter? Join us for Digital Fabrication! Students will explore digital design tools and resources, beginning with an overview of the machines available in Moses Brown’s new Y-Lab, including a laser cutter, 3D printers, a wire bender, and CNC machines. We will use the laser cutter to etch and cut different materials including wood, acrylic, fabric, cork, rubber, leather, and more. Students will use CAD software to create their own digital design files, prototype them, revise their designs, and iterate their way to a finished product.
David Husted
David Husted joined Moses Brown in 2017 as MB’s firstever Director of Innovation and Design. He helps both teachers and students use the resources available in the Y-Lab. David is passionate about the tools and methods of the maker movement, and enjoys sharing the wonders of design and fabrication.

Exploring Robotics Through VEX IQ STEM Grades 4–8
July 13–17 Half-day: 8:45–11:30 a.m. Campers will design and build simple machines using VEX IQ components, then build a basic robot integrating motors and sensors, and learn to control the robot through remote control or programming with VEXcode. VEX IQ components are specifically designed for upper elementary and middle school students. Through a series of hands-on team activities with VEX IQ, campers will explore the design, engineering and programming of robots. VEX IQ is a snap-together accessible robotics system that requires no tools but incorporates complex motors and sensors. VEXcode Blocks lets campers use simple drag and drop color-coded commands to create functioning programs and control the VEX IQ robots. To start, campers will build a series of simple machines and complete a chain reaction challenge, then move on to incorporate more advanced motors and mechanisms, using sensors to allow for remote and program control of the VEX IQ robot. VEX IQ sensors connect quickly and measure time, position distance, rotation, and sense touch.
