College Counseling at CLASS OF 2015

OUR PHILOSOPHY Consistent with our Quaker school philosophy, the college counseling office seeks to nurture students’ Inner Light through the college process. We encourage young people to reflect deeply about their values and priorities as well as their talents and gifts in order to identify institutions that best match their personal, educational and professional goals. Whether our students choose to enroll in one of the nation’s leading liberal arts colleges, public flagship universities or premier research universities, they are well prepared to let their lives speak as they lead in the 21st century. The college options for Moses Brown graduates are as broad and diverse as the students’ talents and interests.

DANIEL WARD ’15 ENGLISH & CLASSICS, UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

When Daniel Ward began his college search, he was focused primarily on small liberal arts colleges in the Northeast. But when he heard about the Jefferson Scholars program at the University of Virginia from his college counselor, he thought, ‘Why not?’ “During the Jefferson Scholar process, I started to understand what is important to me, what really defines me. I’m passionate about social activism and education. It was a transcendent moment when I realized I really wish to see reform in these areas. The college process can provide that kind of insight for you. Don’t discount what you’re impassioned about: honor it.” Daniel will join 34 other 2015 Jefferson Scholars from across the globe. This prestigious award covers the entire cost of attending the university. NATIONAL UNIVERSITIES THAT MB ’15 GRADS ALSO ATTEND: BROWN UNIVERSITY, GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY, UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO, UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN, UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME, UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA, AND WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY IN ST. LOUIS NICHOLAS “COLE” CORRENTE ’15 PRE-ENGINEERING, POMONA COLLEGE

A student at Moses Brown since kindergarten, Cole Corrente exemplifies the Quaker focus of education: encouraging students to discover and develop their unique inner promise. After years as the Class of 2015’s leading “techspert” on visual effects and filmmaking — with many YouTube tutorials to prove it — Cole traded his Adobe software for an apple press when he took to rural Vermont to join 44 other high school juniors at the Mountain School. Cole returned with an eagerness to connect with the wider world, and an understanding of the role he plays in shaping it. Cole’s time away helped crystallize the value of diverse experiences and directed his search to small, liberal arts colleges, where he could study a variety of subjects rather than focusing on just one. LIBERAL ARTS COLLEGES THAT MB ’15 GRADS ALSO ATTEND: BRYN MAWR COLLEGE, DAVIDSON COLLEGE, HAVERFORD COLLEGE, MIDDLEBURY COLLEGE, PITZER COLLEGE, SMITH COLLEGE, WELLESLEY COLLEGE, AND WILLIAMS COLLEGE ELEANOR MARTIN ’15 CLASSICS, UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD

Eleanor tenaciously pursues learning with a resolve and spirit more typical of a doctoral candidate than a high school student. Eleanor’s intense interest and focus on the classics became the key dimension for her college search process. In the summer before senior year, Eleanor spent time in England stoking her keen interest in the classics and honing her translation skills. She lived and breathed Greek and Latin: attending classes, lectures, and seminars from 9:00 in the morning until nearly 9:00 at night. The experience provided a window into the depth of study required at the university level and she returned enthusiastic and confident about her prospects. After a positive summer “test run,” Eleanor is elated to travel across the pond in the fall to study classics at Oxford University. SPECIALIZED UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS THAT MB ’15 GRADS ALSO ATTEND: BABSON COLLEGE, BRYANT UNIVERSITY, GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY, MAINE MARITIME ACADEMY, NYU SHANGHAI, UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY

Moses Brown, a Friends School, exists to inspire the inner promise of each student and instill the utmost care for learning, people and place.
