Class Notes

About Our Cover

The cover of this special edition of Class Notes depicts a class taught by Peter Ferry ’09 at Moses Brown last spring. As a Scholar in Residence, Peter performed two movements of Ney Rosauro’s “Concerto for Marimba” with MB’s upper school wind ensemble, took part in workshops with students, and gave several performances. One piece he shared with the MB community was entitled “Staying the Course,” a memorial percussion solo written in 2007, dedicated to the U.S. service men and women who lost their lives in the Iraq War. Peter graduated from the Eastman School of Music in May and appeared at TEDx this past October.

Burrill Getman writes, “In October of 2009, my wife Bee and I moved into a continuing care retirement community in Naples, Florida. We thoroughly enjoy the active lifestyle and our beautiful independent living apartment, however we still return to our golf villa in Iowa for the summer.” Bill Myers is a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association which established a corporation, RV-12 Inc., to teach 12 Sarasota-area teenagers how to build a plane. Six members of the EAA pitched in to purchase the $60,000 airplane kit and spend time on Saturdays in an airplane hangar surrounded by every tool imaginable, as well as charts, instructions, wires and bolts, building the plane. They expect to have the plane in the air by December.

1946 Dean Woodman ’46 visited MB

in the fall — see www.mosesbrown.org/ mbvision or the next issue of Cupola for more on this historic event.

Reunion 2014 1949 Blake Cady has retired from a career in surgical oncology at the Lahey Clinic after 14 years, as well as Harvard Medical School/Deaconess Hospital (16 years), Brown Medical School/ Women & Infants Hospital/Rhode Island Hospital (10), and Harvard Medical School/Cambridge Hospital

(5 years). Blake shares, “Fortunately, I am healthy — as is my wife Dorothy.” Blake and his wife live in Brookline, Massachusetts. Bill Brackett writes, “65 years is a long time ago. I was wondering if anyone in ’49 is living on the west coast of Florida now. If so, thought maybe we might want to connect for lunch or something. I will not be able to get to Providence next spring. Ann and I are continuing to learn and grow at Plymouth Harbor, a retirement community in Sarasota. It all started at MB where I gained a love of learning and a sense of humility before my God. Keep your head high and look to the horizon. We are blessed in so many ways. Peace, Bill.” Bill can be reached at brackettab@gmail.com. [Editor’s note: Bill now has his class list and learned that there are no 1949 classmates on the west coast of Florida, however Ed Desrochers lives in Mico on the Atlantic side. There are a total of 177 active alumni who call Florida home.] Nat Herreshoff writes, “I am now retired from two careers. I was first a high school teacher of German and history in Mt. Holly, New Jersey near where MB’s headmaster taught. I also taught for a college in the evenings. My second career was havnig a selfemployed tax business. My wife Mary and I spend winters in Naples, Florida. We travel a good deal much of it overseas. I have been very busy lately writing newsletters about geneology and other subjects.” Nat also included in his note that Moses Brown was a great-uncle of his, several generations back. He was the brother of his ancestor John Brown. Two of Nat’s greatgrandfathers attended the school in the 1820s. Members of his mother’s Quaker family, the Chases of Prudence Island, have attended the school for generations. Nat’s great-grandmother Harriet Chase died in the main building in 1881 while taking care of his grandfather Halsey Chase during an epidemic sickness at the school.

1951 Bud Brooks ’51 writes, “I now have two granddaughters at the University of Oklahoma, a granddaughter in senior year at the Episcopal School of Dallas, and a fine baseball-playing grandson in ninth grade at St. Mark’s School of Texas. Football is not his number one game. It’s baseball that’s number one with him. He turned 15 in August and has already played more than 200 baseball games. He’s a left fielder, catcher and second baseman (his favorite position). Last year, Grant’s coach called him the best second baseman he has had in his 13 years coaching the team. His batting average this spring was .571.” Bud is pictured with his grandson Grant Brooks at his first JV football game of the season. Needless to say, Bud loves to watch him play sports.

1952 Over a year ago, Fred Blakeman joined a local men’s barbershop harmony group, The Bull Run Troubadours. He is in the chorus and sings bass, which is the easiest of barbershop four part harmony for him due to his good “filler voice”. The last time he sang in an organized group was with the Naval Aviation Cadet Choir while going through flight training in 1955. He encourages anyone who enjoys singing to look up a local group. Fred lives in Dumfries, Virginia with his wife Nancy.

1959 Larry Kilham’s second volume of his Juno Trilogy — A Viral Affair — is now available at Amazon’s Kindle Store. The book describes what happens when American intelligence discovers a mad dictator is planning a viral pandemic attack: they persuade a top U.S. computer scientist, Dr. Tom Renwick, to work with the lady AI supercomputer, Juno, to develop smart, human-like robots to combat the contagion. Larry says, “A mysterious stranger and a romance change everything.” Much of the book’s action takes place on the Cape in Woods Hole, the Elizabeth Islands, Falmouth and Nauset Beach. Larry and his wife Betsy recently returned from a fabulous river cruise in Burma going from Bagan to Mandalay. Here he is pictured with a friend at the Schwedagon Temple in Rangoon (now Myanmar). After their trip, the Kilhams settled down for Santa Fe’s summer season.

REUNION 2014

1959 Joel Davidsen ’59 writes, “Kendra and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary with our family with an Alaskan cruise. I look forward to seeing everyone May 10, 2014 for the 55th!”

1959 Stephen Thornton writes, “My wife and I have been enjoying our retirements in grand style, traveling and golfing both in the United States and abroad, visiting with my children in San Francisco, Boston, New York, and here in R.I. We have been enjoying our grandchildren’s sports exploits as they follow in their mother’s and uncles’ footsteps. It doesn’t seem possible it has been 11 years since my retirement as director of the William M. Davies Technical School except when I look in the mirror and wonder who that old person is looking at me. We went to Kendra and Joel Davidsen’s 50th wedding anniversary which was also attended by classmates Bunny and Drew Kemalian and Nancy and Tom Godfrey. Everyone had a wonderful time.”

1963 Class of 1963 boarders gathered for a photo. From left to right are Larry Bishins, John Pennington, Kit Sinton, Bill Ballaine and Dave Ottmar. Chuck Davis is missing from picture, too, but attended Reunion with his wife Mary. It was the first time that Chuck, Bill and Larry returned to campus since they graduated. We were glad to have them back!

years. Odell, Herman, Sulloway, Paxton, Ransome, Pratt, Zeoli ... the names resonate after five decades”. Bill has been a lawyer for 40 years and is a founding member of a boutique 50-lawyer civil litigation firm based chiefly in NYC. His wife Joan is a U.S. magistrate judge and they have raised two girls in Brooklyn Heights. Their daughter Katie just graduated from Yale in May and their younger daughter Annie is a Yale sophomore. Both play squash. Bill writes, “I’ve been (undeservedly) blessed. MB is one of those blessings — more so than I knew at the time.”

After spending most of his business career in marketing and sales, Donald Jepson retired in February 2012. He now lives on the coast in Wareham, Massachusetts with his wife after selling their house in Northampton. They are animal care volunteers at the National Marine Life Center in Buzzards Bay where they are helping to rehab injured seals and cold stunned

50th reunion fever is spreading….. On the day of the annual faculty/staff Advance (opening days’ professional development before school officially opens), two different former students visited MB, both connected to the Class of 1964, celebrating their 50th reunion next May.

King “Doc” Odell and the Runci Family

Christian Davin de Champclos, who was a boarder for

Matt Runci ’64 and Madeleine Albright

his sophomore year 1961-1962, was visiting from France with his son.

Later that same day, former student John “Kicker” Kilborn, who attended from nursery through third grade, gave his wife Renata a tour of the old lower school where he famously slid down the bannister. John went on to graduate from St. George’s and now lives and works in Germany. Both Christian and John are interested in staying in the loop about Reunion festivities and can be reached at numericandco@wanadoo.fr and jkil51@aol.com, respectively.

Lee DeRosa is an optometrist in Maine. He will be celebrating his 50th reunion on May 10, 2014. Fred Huntington is retired and living in Norwalk, Connecticut and unfortunately will not be able to come up to Providence to celebrate his reunion.

50th Reunion Chair Matt Runci writes, “Earlier this year, I retired from my position as CEO of Jewelers of America and Board Chair of the Responsible Jewelry Council. Wrapping up a 30+ year career managing industry associations in the luxury goods sector, I decided to downshift to a lower gear so that I could devote my professional energies to the work that I have found most rewarding over the last 15 years: building social,

ethical and environmental responsibility into the global supply chain for precious metals and gemstones. Having spent these past years building a new international organization in London to carry on this work, I intend now to spend my time writing and speaking to varied audiences, including students and businesspeople, about what they might learn from my experience and apply in their own work.” Matt’s friend, former Secretary of State and U.N. Ambassador Madeleine Albright

recognized his accomplishments at the Jewelers’ of America’s GEM Awards. Secretary Albright was known to use her pins as a tool of diplomacy and published a book entitled Read My Pins: Stories from a Diplomat’s Jewel Box. Says Matt, “Laraine and I expect to move soon from Ridgefield, Connecticut to Chapel Hill, North Carolina. We are blessed with six grandchildren — three boys and three girls. The eldest — Alexander ’19 and Harrison ’20 — have followed their dad Chris ’88 to MB, while their mom Beth teaches in Moses Brown’s lower school. Ashley lives in New Jersey and has been blessed with triplets — Jack, Riley and Hadley — and Addison, ages 6 and 7. In our spare time, Laraine and I also enjoy reading and travel, and I still live my longtime passion for Austin-Healeys. “I’m joining many of our former classmates to plan our 50th Class Reunion and extend an invitation to everyone to return to Moses Brown on May 10, 2014!”

1982 Tom Cotter supported the Institute

for the Study & Practice of Non-violence by performing at the Columbus Theatre and for MB’s own fifth graders learning about nonviolent solutions. Kade Tyrrell ’20, one of the boys who took the course, said, “The biggest thing I probably took away from this is... Never go to just violence. Try to talk it out with the person you’re arguing with, if the problem goes to the physical stage, it’s gone too far.” Parents expressed their pride at the result. Also, Tom performed as a special guest on the live result show of America’s Got Talent in August. Tom continues to keep us and America laughing.

Pam Granoff Simon ’02 has attended the Carnaval parades at the Sambadromo in

Rio de Janeiro for the last two years, seeing all of the incredible floats, costumes and dance numbers come to life. This year she was able to dance and be a part of the samba school, Uniao Da Ilha. Pam writes, “They take it very seriously, and anyone participating has to learn all the words of the Portuguese song, be smiling, singing and dancing the entire time, without dropping any of the costume because the school is judged on it and it is on live TV. The costumes include many pieces, and are heavy, weighing about 25lbs.” On her blog, ny2rio.com, Pam documented her experiences as well as restaurant reviews and trip itineraries. Pam has been working in the tech sector since moving to Brazel, organizing the country’s first digital Demo Day and Entrepreneur Week. She just moved from Rio to Sao Paulo with her husband Daniel whom she married last March, and is happy to be living in a city.

Prabhat Dhar, Nathaniel Ring and Nikhil Sen ’07 completed the

San Francisco Giant Half Marathon in August in honor of their good friend and classmate Evan Spirito who passed away last November from lung cancer. The money raised for the Evan Spirito Memorial Foundation went to the oncology department at Massachusetts General Hospital where Evan was treated. Well done, gentlemen! Inspired by the Evan Spirito Memorial Golf Tournament last year and the hard work and effort so many friends and family put towards the event, Michael Kelly organized an annual fishing tournament in Evan’s name this June. Matt Osofisan was top overall angler with three blue fish and one striped bass. Michael writes, “Matt was also the winner of largest striped bass with a 36” striped bass caught aboard the Case Closed with myself as captain. Fishing with me were Johnny Shaw, Tom Sherman, Terry Moran, and Zach Chafee ’07. Adam Tracy and his family also fished the event as well as Dylan Schmitz ’07.” Michael continues, “Evan was an avid fisherman and like anything he took on, he excelled at it; putting together a fishing tournament was obvious. It certainly was no easy task, especially since living so far away complicated the situation, but I knew that my fellow MB alumni and friends of Evan would be a tremendous help.” Michael completed his master’s degree in marine affairs and policy from the University of Miami last fall and works

2007 for the Billfish Foundation. They are a non-profit, NGO for billfish (sailfish, marlin, swordfish) conservation and deal with international fisheries management issues and work to influence policy toward conservation and promoting the numerous conservation and socioeconomic benefits that sportfishing can contribute to local economies. We thank Michael for his work on establishing the annual Evan Spirito Fishing Tournament.

Former Faculty & Staff4

Bisbees Back: Former faculty Tom Bisbee (math department chair, 1972-1978) and son Sam Bisbee (who attended lower school until age 9) were on campus this past spring filming Infinitely Polar Bear (with Providence a stand-in for Cambridge). Many students were starstruck by actor Mark Ruffalo, getting pictures and asking for his signature. We, however, were happy to welcome the Bisbee family back to campus!

Former faculty member John George is now teaching math and physics at East Greenwich High School. He became the head football coach there three years ago and enjoys the games against MB. Faculty members like Kevin Matson, Paul Gazin, and Tim Bickford come to see their old friend at these games. The picture features John and his family after the MB/EG game last fall.
