Director`s Note During one particularly climactic scene in John Logan’s Red, abstract expressionist Mark Rothko rails against the pop art movement, claiming that he and his contemporaries “understood the importance of seriousness,” while all pop artists are essentially worthless in their frivolity, making nothing but “zeitgeist art… completely disposable.” In an unexpected turn, Rothko’s young assistant, Ken, challenges the respected artist, crying “You know, not everything has to be so goddamn IMPORTANT all the time! Not every painting has to rip your guts out and expose your soul! Not everyone wants art that actually HURTS!” This passage in particular sparked a similar conversation between myself (Will), Steve Kidd, and Christopher Hoyt as we read this play aloud in Chris’s backyard this summer. Reflecting on Ken’s words, we realized that we too fell prey to the stifling notion that theatre must always be “important,” meaning painful, serious, heavy, and tragic. Conversely, the three of us craved theatre that uplifts and creates moments for laughter and joy. Joyous art, funny art, hopeful art is important art. We need it. And we realized that the actors in our company and the audiences in our community probably needed it, too. What play fits the bill better than A Midsummer Night’s Dream? It is one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies, and for good reason! This play has brought us much needed lightness and fun. Midsummer is not just a comedy, however. It is a story of muddling through confusion and deception to find togetherness and hope. Questions of women’s right to govern themselves underscore the entire play, from the first scene, where a father threatens to have his daughter executed for so-called “disobedience,” to the last, taking place just after the Duke of Athens has married his captured and coerced bride. In our casting, staging, and design, we sought to question the nature of constricting gender roles, power dynamics, social status, and issues of free will. At the same time, we hope that you laugh, delight in the comedy of mistaken identity, and revel in the magic of this play. We believe that these seemingly conflicting forces, those of unity and levity versus domination and coercion, coexist. They work together to enrich this play. It is our pleasure to bring people together in the same space to enjoy art again. Welcome to A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Sincerely, Will Malloy ‘20 Associate Artistic Director
