// Moses Scott , Assoc. AIA For the last 3 years Moses Scott has been a BIM Specialist in Shanghai, China. As a BIM Specialist, Moses provides ongoing training and support for teams using Revit and other Design Technology Applications. This support includes integrating design intent with global standards for project delivery and researching the latest technology workflows for Architect Moses started his career with firms that were early adopters of Building Information Modeling. With increasing project experience as an Architectural Intern, Moses built a practical knowledge-base in Building Information Modeling. Moses shared the BIM vision for using BIM to prevent re-work, building consensus among stakeholders, and providing a platform for more accurate and earlier decision making.
While in Chicago, Moses sought out the expertise of the local buildingSMART Interest Group. Energized by the collective insights of diverse professionals associated with buildingSMART, Moses became an advocate for expanding the use of BIM and increasing the opportunities for information exchange in design and construction. While in Shanghai, Moses founded a buildingSMART interest group by the name of shanghaiBIM. From its beginning in 2012, until the present day, shanghaiBIM promotes concepts critical to the success of life-cycle BIM and critical to digitizing the construction supply chain; including interoperobility, open standards, and open source project tools. Moses chaired the shanghaiBIM User Group from 2012 through 2015. shanghaiBIM is the first AIA TAP Group outside of the United States and is selected to become buildingSMART China’s first official BIM Forum.

03 Moses Scott Shanghai Lianmei West Hongqiao Project Year: 2015 Shanghai Lianmei West Hongqiao Project is a grand mixed-use development located in Shanghai, China featuring several office buildings and a Lifestyle Mall environment. For the lifestyle portion, the designer created an undulating LED Feature integrated into exterior panels.

// computational design Bringing a designer’s sensability to scripting Tweaking a script, I changed the subtle rotation of all the panels at a rate described by the graph. The amount of change from one panel to the next is almost imperceptible, however the human eye can the pick up the rate of change in the overall design.

05 Moses Scott Xiben New Line Center Year: 2013-2014 Located in Jingan District, one of Shanghai’s important economic regions, Xiben New Line Center is a renovation of an existing tower. The new facade design consists of solid surface blades that twist to reveal integrated advertisting. The new program includes a retail base, a wellness center, offices for a Financial Exchange, and a high-end boutique hotel.

Xiben New Line Center CONCEPT: TURNING FINS & FOLDED FACADES
Twisting. Turning. 1 Rising. Falling. Xiben New Shanghai Center‘s concept features Solid Surface blades that begin at the retail base and continue up the facade of the existing building.
As shown in other projects, the blades are not only 2 attractive, but also promote energy efficiency. By placing the fins on the exterior facade, the heat load is partially blocked before entering the building; while simultaneously allowing for visual light to enter.
The Xiben Project gave me the opportunity to examine 3 the computational method for creating a Building Information Modeling. My first step was to create a script which described the sequence of fins in the facade. By using a script for the geometry, the design (and alterations to the design) can more reliably be translated to other programs..

07 Moses Scott // the traditional versus the computational process Traditional architectural modeling and rendering is a disjointed process that creates dozens (sometimes hundreds) of disconnected files, pictures, and data sources. Even the slightest changes can lead to wastes of time and effort.
For this project, I researched several methods for making a Massively Integrated model. including the twisting solid surface panels, floor slabs, curtain walls, and Sunscreen.

BIM seeks to resolve this problem by coordinating integrated data and models, however most BIM Software remains limited in its ability to describe complex geoemtry. By combining computational processes and Building Information Modeling, BIM Authors can analyze, design, modify, and collaborate in more advanced ways without losing time. Computational Process

19 Moses Scott Revit Training The learning curve required for new Revit users is often cited as a barrier for BIM Implementation. In the fast paced market of China, this challenge is aggrevated to an even greater degree. At Callison Shanghai, I successfully expanded the existing BIM Training program that was especially adapted to construction market. Each BIM Project at Callison’s Shanghai office recieved project-specific Revit Training. To support projects, I constantly created and updated task-based lessons in Power Point and Video.

During the construction phase, RTKL was brought in to design the interior finishes of the public spaces. Thats where I came in. The 740,000-foot 11-story hospital facility opened in 2012 in California. The medical center features 288 private single-patient rooms, 44 emergency and trauma rooms and 11 operating rooms.

I have worked with Moses for many years on issues related to open standards for BIM through buildingSMART. He fully understands the big picture and opportunities that BIM will ultimately provide to the facility owner, but he also understands the capabilities available today based on personal experience. Based on that real world experience he knows how to deliver products today with the tools available in an open standards environment. He brings a broad based knowledge of design and the facility life cycle along with the people skills necessary to make any project a success. I enjoy working with Moses at every opportunity and look forward to doing so for many more years.
