firm Architects Mosher Drew (AMD) was founded in 1948 by Robert Mosher, FAIA, and Roy Drew, AIA, and we will be celebrating 70 years of service in the Southern California region in 2018. Our firm has enjoyed the honor of authoring numerous landmark projects in the San Diego Area, including the Coronado Bridge, UCSD Math and Science Building, SDSU Love Library, and the San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park. The firm has three principals – William A. Magnuson, AIA, Edward M. Holakiewicz, AIA, and Benjamin V. Meza, AIA, LEED AP. AMD has a staff of fifteen professionals, including seven licensed to practice architecture. Architects Mosher Drew believes design of ‘Architecture for Education’ is a shared endeavor, applying our talents and expertise to reinforce the specific academic objectives of the schools and districts we partner with. To create meaningful places for student intellectual growth, we incorporate principals of humanistic design with each academic interior and exterior environment we plan and create. This includes fostering sensory connections between occupants and their environment, and heightening awareness that stimulates thought and social interaction. We promote elemental concepts of ‘Biophillic Design’ such as integrated natural daylight, views, spatial diversity and flexibility. We consider human comfort in selection of finishes and materials, colors and textures, and graphics. Combined with attention to long term cost of ownership and programmatic needs for adaptability, our designs advocate activities that stimulate and energize the learning experience.

A MUSICAL BUILDING
Music practice facilities for K-12 education often follow ‘shoebox’ organizational shape to fit traditional campus settings. As architects we seek design that is more expressive of the performance of sound but struggle with the balance between interior performance and exterior building form. The new Mira Mesa High School Music Building is intended to be ‘musical’ in form respectful of the stringent technical qualities for acoustics and controls for large instrumental ensembles. The building is composed internally of two primary high-volume practice rooms formed by angled walls and ceilings acoustically treated for sound deflection and absorption to ensure optimum musical performance. The rooms serve a diversity of group sizes, one for a band of up to 270 musicians and a second for an orchestra of up to 70 musicians. The rooms are connected by low volume support spaces, the composition of high-low-high forms that is kinetic in appearance and protective from acoustic overlap between the rooms. Each of the volumes are multi-faceted spaces, each created to meet simple rules to marry acoustic performance with architectural expression: changing exterior wall alignments that relate to the interior conditions of acoustic treatment and avoidance of parallel surfaces to avoid echo; and incorporation of indirect daylight through skylights and clerestories to enhance the visual experience and not detract from musician performance. The result is an iconographic building figure, strategically located to be visible from many directions, and shaped to express the technical parameters of music performance and the playful characteristics of musical experience.

A 21st CENTURY CLASSROOM MODEL
Traditional K-12 education buildings have created an entourage of partitioned structures promoting a single lecturer instruction style, and resulting in mostly isolated classrooms. Current teaching pedagogy has changed the architectural dynamic to reinforce information distribution, team collaboration, and ‘learn by doing.’ Teachers have assumed a role of ‘advisor’ or ‘guide’ to facilitate students’ efforts to research information and create their own knowledge base. A new classroom model should respond by facilitating creative, critical-thinking and communication skills enhanced by a group dynamic. Therefore, we believe the built environment must respond directly to the need for diversity and the collaborative spirit of education through design for flexibility, mobility, and dynamic learning. The future education building for Mira Mesa High School will reinforce this intent by providing a multi-environment, dynamic learning setting. This multi-setting structure extends beyond traditional indoor-outdoor design by utilizing three distinct variations of instructional spaces combined to create a diverse ‘collaborative nucleus.’ The design offers standardized interior classrooms for traditional needs, but then merges with shared patios and outdoor teaching clusters to promote physical and visual connections to create unique learning experiences. This model allows interior classrooms to be fluidly interactive with an adjacent classroom, patio and outdoor teaching cluster, or each can be partitioned into separate break-out type spaces. The ‘collaborative nucleus’ structure is aligned with other similar structures, enclosing a central landscape area where the ‘teaching clusters’ are located. This architectural model reinforces diversity in learning while promoting the physiological and psychological benefits of connectivity to nature.
