merrychristmas Local planning Community grants awarded Mosman Council has awarded grants totalling $70,000 to 25 community organisations through its 2019/20 Community Grants program. The program assists non-profit community groups to deliver projects that make a positive impact to address social, recreational and cultural needs in the community. Mosman Mayor Carolyn Corrigan presented the grants to recipients on 3 September, noting Council’s appreciation for the invaluable work they do. A diverse range of projects will benefit from the funding including mentoring for young people, animal assisted therapy for people in residential aged care, multicultural information and resources, and upgrading equipment and facilities for various groups. Among the recipients are Raise Foundation, Animals for All Care, Taldumande Youth Services, Lower North Shore Domestic Violence Network, Fighting Chance Australia, StreetWork and Oneland. Council received a huge response to its draft Local Strategic Planning Statement with more than 660 submissions from community members and 80 people attending a public meeting with the Mayor to learn more about the key points. Feedback raised concerns about future commercial development in Mosman Junction, as well as matters such as population growth, housing, traffic, bushland, parks and building certification. Thank you to all those who participated in this process. The feedback is invaluable in ensuring the statement reflects community concerns and values. Council’s strategic planners are reviewing submissions and will report to Council later in the year. For more information visit mosmanplanning.net

Young writers applauded

Mosman Art Prize

Congratulations to the talented young writers recognised in the 2019 Mosman Youth Awards in Literature, presented at Barry O’Keefe Library on 28 August. The awards are for students from Kindergarten to Year 12, with prizes in the categories of prose for Primary (K–6), Junior Secondary (Years 7–9) and Senior Secondary (Years 10–12), and poetry for Junior Secondary (Years 7–9) and Senior Secondary (Years 10–12). Now in their 27th year, the 2019 awards attracted 343 entries. Judges congratulated the short-listed writers for their exceptional work and commented that the standard of entries made it extremely difficult to select the winners. Sixteen young writers received awards and commendations including students from local schools Redlands, Queenwood and Cammeraygal High School.

Upgrade of The Spit

Council has finished extensive upgrade works to Mosman’s The Spit. The major two-year $2.5 million project included installation of a seawall, stormwater improvements, erosion protection works, and a significant streetscape upgrade including a new bus stop and shelter, pedestrian paths, cyclist links, improved signage, pavements, traffic calming devices, seating and landscaping. The upgrade will protect the beach from erosion and ameliorate flooding, and improves the recreational amenity and safety of the area.

New accessible toilets Funding for new accessible toilets at Mosman Junction has been awarded under the NSW Government’s ‘My Community Project’ program. The proposal for the project, made by Mosman’s Access and Mobility Committee and supported by Mosman Council, received the most public votes from the North Shore electorate so will receive funding of $200,000. The facility will replace the old toilet block in the Raglan St West carpark, and is anticipated to be completed by the third quarter of next year.

Mosman Art Gallery Acting Director Katrina Cashman with judge Guan Wei and Mayor Carolyn Corrigan with winning artwork The party is over, by Paul Kelleher.

Paul Kelleher has won the 2019 Mosman Art Prize for his work The party is over. The $50,000 prize was presented at a ceremony at Mosman Art Gallery on 10 September, attended by NSW Arts Minister the Hon. Don Harwin, Member for North Shore Felicity Wilson, judge and acclaimed artist Guan Wei, Mosman Mayor Carolyn Corrigan and Councillors. The Prize is the oldest and most prestigious Council-run art prize in Australia, and entries form the basis of the Gallery’s valuable and historic collection of modern and contemporary art. Kelleher joins a roll call of luminaries and previous winners including Margaret Olley, Grace Cossington Smith, Lloyd Rees, Adam Cullen and Natasha Walsh. Other awards presented to entrants were the Margaret Olley Commendation Award to Karlee Rawkins for Tiger Tribe, the Allan Gamble Award to Zengping Lai for Backyards, and the Guy Warren Emerging Artists’ Award to Lachlan Gromek for Ian Connor’s revenge. The 2019 Mosman Art Prize exhibition is open until 27 October as part of the 2019 Festival of Mosman, along with multimedia artist Dr Tianli Zu's A Conversation with Shadows in The Cube and Denise Pope's Mosman in Focus in the Gallery's InProfile space, both exhibiting until 17 November. Smarter parking Since 2018 Council has been using its in-ground parking sensor technology to record car park occupancy in selected restricted parking areas. This includes multi-storey car parks in Vista Street, Bridgepoint and Mosman Cache, off-street car parks at Mosman Square and Raglan Street, and along Military Road and some adjoining streets. From November 2019 Council will be utilising this data to enforce parking restrictions at these locations, phasing out the traditional chalking method. Parking restrictions in areas where sensors are located will not change and rangers will continue with the current practise to check vehicles in person for any overstay and relevant permits prior to the issuing of any infringements. In addition to Council’s use, data from the sensors is used for Council’s free Park Mosman app to help drivers find available parking in real time.
