Newsletter now available on-line at www.mosman.nsw.gov.au

From the Editor’s Desk Dear Readers, Welcome back to the Over 55s Newsletter from the Mosman Council Aged and Disability Services! This time again we have a lot of exciting and interesting news for you. Mosman is celebrating the Guringai Festival, and it started in style with the Aboriginal themed luncheon at the Community Restaurant. Mel Tyas gave us a fascinating talk on native bush plants for either cooking or medicine. We also had a fantastic lunch and a lot of music. But the festival carries on through to the first week in July, check our website (www.mosman.nsw.gov.au) for more info / programs. On a different note, please remember that the new tax return season for the Tax Help Assistance program will also be starting in July. Clare and John our fantastic dedicated volunteers will be back on board to assist you should you need help lodging your tax return. Please contact Olivier on 9978 4128 for bookings. In this issue you will also find all the important information that you need for Transport, meals on wheels, Social support, etc‌ as well as detailed programs of activities and outings‌ As it is the end of the financial year, some prices have increased, please make sure you check the fares for transport, or Meals on Wheels, most prices however remain unchanged. We will have a lot more fun this term with the different activities starting again, Friday the 6th of July for the Art class (and the 9th for the Monday art class), and Tuesday the 17th for Healthy lifestyle. There will be also new themed lunches such as the French Bistro (one of my favorites!) July the 27th or an Italian lunch on the 31st of August. Please make sure you book in advance! In this issue we are delighted to introduce two of our new drivers, John and Phil. They have joined the team this year; you would already have seen them behind the wheel. Please read the transport section for a little bit more information, and make them feel welcome! We will also have a new Aged Services Assistant starting in July and we would like to congratulate Lilia for being appointed Meals on Wheels Assistant. On the activity side of things, I am pleased to say that the table tennis and the new Chess group are both going quite strongly. The table tennis is a success, and there are more and more players, we are looking at involving some of the kids from the Youth centre for a little tournament, this might be time for you to join too! (Every Wednesday between 1.00 and 3.30 pm). The start of the new Choir / sing-along group has however been delayed several times. We do apologise and would like to thank all participants and people involved, in particular, Kay and Elizabeth. Council had to produce a new manual for users before we could officially start this activity, keep an patient eye, it will soon be a permanent feature at the Centre.

News from the Community Restaurant Welcome to the Community Restaurant! What a lot of fun we’ve been having, with students from the local schools visiting, Queen’s Jubilee lunches and of course our regular ‘special’ lunches. The four young people who visited from Mosman High were quite delightful, with the young girl from Kazikstan loving being able to have a chat with our dear friend, Josephine, in Russian! Another one played the piano and a couple of them joined in our dancing!! I had a beautiful letter from them, saying they would love to return another day! We’ve also had a couple of groups of older girls from Queenwood come up for lunch and they also enjoyed themselves and we certainly loved having them! Our lunch to celebrate Anzac Day was great, with a beautiful performance from our friends, Anne, Paul and Ben Palumbo. We are so lucky that they keep returning to entertain us, as Ben is performing professionally now! No wonder! He has such a fabulous voice!! The Canadian Lunch was also very enjoyable with great, fun entertainment from ‘The Echoes’. What a wonderful singalong we had!! So much hidden talent in the room! By the time you are reading this we will have celebrated our Guringai Festival Lunch. The Guringai Festival is held every year to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture in the Northern Sydney region. Coming up we have two of your favourite special lunches. French and Italian!!! The French lunch will be held on Friday 27th July and the Italian Lunch on Friday 31st August. After these lunches, we’ll get back to our roots with a “Best of British” Lunch! There’s been a lot to celebrate in Britain this year, with the Queen’s Jubilee, Prince William turning 30 and the Olympic Games, so we’ll try and make it a big one!!! Please keep coming along to the Community Restaurant, bring your friends and remember to book in for the special lunches! (We were all delighted with the effort you all made at the special dress up lunch we had to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee! For an unplanned, spur of the moment event, it was a huge success and lots of fun! Thank you!) Mary Magnus The Kitchen Fairy!

Meals on Wheels A big challenge facing many older Australians today is making sure they are eating enough nourishing food. Eating enough means being able to maintain a healthy weight and even having a little extra weight ‘in reserve’ for times of illness or stress. Tea and toast is not enough! A worrying estimate is that 30% of people aged 60 years or older, who live independently, suffer from some degree of malnutrition. These people tend to become sick more often and take longer to recover than those who are wellnourished.  Good nutrition is important for our health, independence and quality of life.  Good nutrition improves wound healing.  Good nutrition helps to preserve bone mass and maintain muscle strength, reducing the risk of falls and fractures.  Good nutrition improves well being. Our menu at Meals on Wheels offers a choice of nutritious meals each day and is fantastic value. Our prices (from Monday 2nd July 2012): Meal $5.50 Soup $1.30 Dessert $1.20 Juice $0.50 } Meal package (meal, soup, dessert, juice) $8.00 Sandwich $3.80 Salad $5.85 Fresh, home-delivered chilled meals are available Monday to Friday ready for you to heat in your oven or microwave, and we provide frozen meals for weekends and public holidays. Salads and soups are available every day and sandwiches are available on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. If you’re unsure of when you’ll be at home to receive deliveries, why not come to the Meals on Wheels kitchen and collect some frozen meals. Simply bring a cool bag with an ice brick to the Meals on Wheels kitchen between 11am and 1pm and you can choose from our extensive frozen selection. Have you thought about taking away some frozen meals after your exercise class or after other activities in the Seniors Centre? If you, or someone you know or care for, would like to try our home-delivered meals or have a look at our menu, please contact either Katrina or Denise on 9978 4130. We are a very flexible service, offering both long and short-term assistance. No referrals needed. Welcome to Lilia Gretsch, our new Food Services Assistant. Lilia works in Meals on Wheels and the Community Restaurant. Kind regards, Katrina, Denise, Lilia, Vicki & Elizabeth - Meals on Wheels 6

There will be a new face in the volunteer office… As I will be on extended leave for 4 months from the end of July, there will be a new face in the Volunteer Office. Her name is Melinda and like me she is always looking for new volunteers to help our community, so if you’ve got a bit of spare time and want to do something great with it pop into the Mosman Senior’s Centre and see Melinda or Liz. I look forward to seeing you all later this year. Liz Nagel Volunteers Coordinator & Carers Group Facilitator 9978 4089

Community Support The Many Aspects to a Neighbourly Approach You may know that Mosman Council offers a Neighbour Aid / Social Support Program. Programs such as the Neighbour Aid / Social Support Program have become a vital part of our society today, as those who volunteer their time are actually in some way taking the role of what might have been in the past, that of the friendly neighbour or family member and have tended to assist with visits, companionship, assisting with shopping and other tasks, outings and a range of other assistance and support. Following a forum on relieving social isolation in the community, at the beginning of last year, another aspect was added to the Neighbour Aid / Social Support Program, when one of our art tutors, Rosemary Christmas, who attended the forum, came forward with a brilliant idea which involved what we are calling ‘Art at Home’. Rosemary’s idea was based on the rationale that local artists could use their expertise by taking art to the isolated in the community. Rosemary further saw this as a means to a further link which could see organised gatherings from time to time where the art could be displayed and the ‘artists’ could meet with others who have been part of the program. Rosemary saw that most people would have resources to build upon, such as their own art works, photographs, books etc. The visiting art volunteer could begin by using these simple familiar images to create a drawing or picture. With numerous styles of mediums available such as simple print making, collage etc, the possibilities could be endless. Recruiting willing ‘art’ volunteers was of course the essence of this project. Rosemary envisaged the need to build a team of willing and suitable visiting art volunteers. Rosemary saw her role as assisting with the recruitment of artists and as such had contacts with facilities such as Mosman Art Society and Willoughby Workshop. Late last year the project had its first participant with an ‘Art Volunteer’ placed with a younger person with autism, who had a passion for art. This relationship has blossomed and recently, the volunteer was able to report to us on the benefits the project had brought to the client and how the family could observe how the relationship with the ‘Art Volunteer’ and being offered the opportunity to work on art projects was reaping benefits for the client. Rosemary continues to work with us and we hope to offer the project to more participants. At the moment we have the interest of another client, who has a long history in art and painting, but due to health reasons has been unable to pursue her hobby. We hope that ‘Art at Home’ will offer her this opportunity again. With the opportunities that ‘Art at Home’ has the potential to offer, Chantal and I have discussed that this could extend to other areas of the arts such as poetry, literature, movies, opera, to name a few. Matching people with like interests in these 8 areas poses huge potential.

If you would like to know more about ‘Art at Home’ or the Neighbour Aid / Social Support Program in general, either from the perspective of volunteering your services or having a volunteer to assist, please contact either Chantal Kerr or Lyn Kelleher on 9978 4119. Of course we are also available to provide a range of information on local services and facilities and can support you in the process of accessing this assistance. The Seniors Centre in Mosman Square is open every weekday. You can phone us on the above number to make a time to discuss your service and support needs. This is special calendar which has been developed for handling rush jobs. All rush jobs are wanted yesterday. With this calendar, a client can order his work on the 7th and have it delivered on the 3rd. Everyone wants his job by Friday. So there are 3 Fridays in every week. There are 8 new days at the end of the month for those end-of-the-month jobs. There is no 1st of the month – so there cant be late delivery of the end-of-the-month jobs on the 1st. A “Blue Monday” or “Monday morning hangover” cant happen, as all Mondays have been removed. There are no bothersome non-productive Saturdays and Sundays – no comprehensive leave or overtime to worry about. With no 15th, 30th or 31st, no “time-off” is necessary for chasing salary cheques or paying bills – in fact, there is no salary either. Finally, Mirday is a special day of the week specially designed to perform miracles!

There's always something happening at Mosman Square Seniors Centre The Mosman Square Seniors' Centre is open daily from 9.00am to 5.00pm. Floating Bowling Balls? Have you ever really thought about just how dense water really is? If you've ever carried a gallon of water you know that water is not very light. In fact, a gallon of water weighs about 8 pounds! But what does this have to do with bowling balls? If you've ever been bowling you know that bowling balls range from about 8 to 16 pounds. However they are all the same size! This means that the average density of an 8 pound ball must be HALF the average density of a 16 pound ball. The inside of a bowling ball can get complicated but basically manufacturers vary the size, shape and material of the core of the ball to adjust the weight. So if one gallon of water weighs 8 pounds and an 8 pound bowling ball takes up more space than a gallon of water, the ball will float! When an object is placed in water it will displace its weight in water (Archimede's principle). So the 8 pound ball (the red one on the left) is displacing 8 pounds of water but since it doesn't take up less volume than 8 pounds of water if floats. On the other hand, the 16 pound ball (the gray one on the right) is trying to displace 16 pounds of water but it has less volume than 16 pounds of water and sinks. OR we can just say the 8 pound ball is less dense than water and the 16 pound ball is more dense than water where density is the mass of the ball divided by its volume.
