Meet the team Julie Helfenstein, Aged Services Assistant

02 9978 4235 E: J.Helfenstein@mosman.nsw.gov.au Who I am: ? I moved to Sydney about 15 months ago from sunny Brisbane. I do miss the heat but Sydney is amazing! There is so much to do and see and the beaches here are beautiful! Even though my commute from Inner West Sydney is long, it is pretty special crossing the Harbour Bridge every day and seeing the Opera House! What I do at Mosman: : I am the Aged Services Assistant. I help my team deliver different services and I also help with events that we hold in the community centre. What I can assist you with: I can help you find the right person to speak to in regards to our services. I help set up all of the activities you love and I also top up the free tea, coffee and biscuits we have in the Care CafĂŠ!

Robert Brown, Community Bus Driver

02 9978 4120 E: R.Brown@mosman.nsw.gov.au Who I am: I have been with Mosman Council for two and a half years. I work on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. What I do at Mosman: On Mondays I drive the shopping bus - a trip to Bridgepoint Shopping Centre in the morning and another trip after lunch for those clients who like to sleep late. On Wednesdays and Fridays, I do Individual Transport for our clients to all suburbs on the Lower North Shore. On these days I have regular clients as well as occasional clients, and destinations include the major hospitals, hair appointments, doctor visits, physio appointments and Bingo, to name a few. Providing this service to the seniors of Mosman is very rewarding and I feel privileged to have the opportunity to do so.

CARERS PROGRAM

Be active, healthy and engaged

A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability, mental illness, dementia, chronic or terminal illness or is frail. Being a carer can often be emotionally and physically draining and many carers put their own needs last making them feel alone or unsupported. This can sometimes cause the carer to feel overwhelmed. Carers need to make their own wellbeing a priority. Keeping healthy both physically and mentally is important. The Mosman Carers group has provided ongoing support, information, advice and assistance for carers for the past 14 years. The group also provides the opportunity to talk things over with people who are in a similar situation. This is extremely helpful as they understand the caring role only too well. Here is some feedback from group members: " The group is supportive and informative, and the helpful tips from other carers are invaluable. It is somewhere to share, relax and have a laugh when things get demanding." (Kerry) " It has helped me reduce my stress levels and improve my coping skills and has allowed me to access programs I had no previous knowledge of." (Katica) " The group empathy comforts us and through sharing and support we can retain perspective, the group provides a warm and comfortable haven when things get tough, it has helped me feel better about continuing with my caring role, we also laugh often!" (Sabrina) The group meets every Wednesday from 10am to 12pm at Mosman Council. The meetings are relaxed and friendly and there are regular guest speakers covering a range of topics. If you wish to learn more about the group, please contact Liz Nagel, Carers Program Coordinator on 9978 4089 and 9978 4128 or L.Nagel@mosman.nsw.gov.au. Access the guest speaker list on Council’s website: mosman.nsw.gov.au/community/carers Mosman Carers Group has turned 14! Congratulation to Liz Nagel for running the group for 14 years strong and helping so many carers during this time! 6

The program runs every 1st and 3rd Saturday from 9.30am to 3pm and includes outings, visits to museums, concerts, centre based music therapy, art therapy, gentle exercises and movement classes which are specifically designed to help the participants remain engaged and connected. The club gives family members/carers the opportunity to take a break whilst their loved ones are enjoying a day out. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Community Support Team (Chantal and Lyn) is your first point of call for linking to the services you need to remain living independently at home as long as possible. We work WITH you to identify your needs and then make appropriate connections. We can speak to you over the phone, arrange a friendly home visit, or meet you here at our Centre or anywhere in the community you feel comfortable. If you are new to the area, or perhaps you feel you can benefit from knowing more about what is available to you, we are here to answer your questions. Computer Pals

Stay Connected with technology

Computers, laptops, and smart devices such as tablets or phones can get us online and make our lives easier. They allow us to do lots of different things like keep up-to-date with news, pay bills, do banking, do business with a range of organisations and government departments, and stay in regular contact with family and friends who live far away. Although many Australians are able to take advantage of the benefits of modern technology, we know it’s not always easy for older Australians - and we want to help. Some older people are physically or socially isolated because they live alone or are separated from their family or friends. If you or someone you know can relate to this, using computers and the internet can help improve your situation by helping you connect with family and friends. This can be through emails or social networking sites like Facebook. Being prepared to use computers, or other technological devices, and the internet can also help you keep informed and be aware of changes that may affect you. Many government departments and organisations now increasingly rely on the internet, e-bulletins and websites to provide people with information or tell them when they need to do something. If you don’t know much about computers or the internet and want to learn, join the Computer Pals at Mosman Square Seniors’ Centre. Our course will allow you to progress at your own pace in a friendly non-threatening environment. Embracing technology can make our lives easier and help keep us connected to our community and our families. If you’re motivated to learn then you’re likely to succeed, the secret is to be motivated! 14

Courses run from the Lounge: 5 weeks for $25 or 10 weeks for $40. Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm Information and booking contact 9978 4128
