Understanding the Aged Care Reforms and how YOU can benefit! As a range of Australian Government reforms have been taking effect since 2015, we continues to be focused on the health and wellbeing of older people in our community. The last issue of the newsletter focused on My Aged Care Gateway and on the importance of being registered with My Aged Care in order receive information and services you may need to assist you living at home as long as possible. As we age, continued independent living in our homes and greater choice around services that support our health and wellbeing are even more important. In recent years, the Aged Care System has been reforming. The latest major change now sees the decision making and choices in the hands of the consumer. The easiest way to access information and to understand the changes are through the My Aged Care website myagedcare.gov.au or phoning 1800 200 422. My Aged Care is an Australian Government initiative established to provide easy access to appropriate and accurate information, give you more choice and control of services, and allow you to see and understand service funding and pricing more transparently. You can now access more information allowing informed decisions and choices.

CONSUMER DIRECTED CARE

Mosman Coun cil is a register ed Aged Care Provider NAPS ID 8789 . Talk to us today if yo u wish to rece ive Mosman Coun cil Services as part of your CDC pack age.

From February 2017, funding for Home Care Packages, delivered using Consumer Directed Care approach (CDC) will follow YOU, the consumer so YOU are free to select any provider of your choice. If eligible, the Packages will be portable, allowing you to change service provider, including if you move to another location. These changes will give you greater choice in deciding who provides your care, and will establish a consistent national approach to prioritising access to care. And this means if you are eligible for a Home Care Package you can chose Mosman Council's Community Services as a provider. Also, from July 2018, the Government intends to combine Home Care Packages and the Commonwealth Home Support Programme into a single integrated care at home programme. At present Mosman Council provides Community Transport, Meals and Social Support through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme. These changes represent a significant shift in how care and support is delivered to older people. If you need some assistance in better understanding your options, or would like to know if Mosman Council is the right fit for you, one of our friendly Community Support Officers would be happy to assist you. HOME LIBRARY SERVICE We are modernising! What a busy time of year for the volunteer’s office! We have implemented a new volunteer management system, making things so much easier and simplifying our communication channels! We also have an E-Newsletter, another recent addition, so we are modernising, making things easier for you when you join us to volunteer! Contact Steven at Volunteers Office on 9978 4126 or reception 99784128

HOME LIBRARY SERVICE Mosman Library runs a Home Library service available to all eligible residents which lets people continue their love of reading even if they can't physically make it to the Library. This wonderful program has recently been taken over by Rebecca, who has been a librarian for the past six years and has worked in a number of roles in public libraries. This service is not just for the aged but also available to carers, people with disabilities or those with a long or short term illness. We might just need to see a medical certificate. All you need to do is ring the Library on 9978 4091 or email hls@mosman.nsw.gov.au to get started. We will get your preferences of what you like to read and how often you would like deliveries - fortnightly or monthly. We offer a self-select service too - if you can get to the library but find it difficult to get them home we can organise for this to happen. Remember the library has more than just books and we have options for people who struggle with standard print.

WHY MOSMAN CARERS GROUP IS SPECIAL! Mosman Carers Group, an award winning program started more than 12 years ago and during that time many people have attended the meetings and found them invaluable. We think the best way to describe the group and its benefits is to let Carers who attend speak for themselves; As Jan said, " when illness comes along and takes your life in a very different direction everything seems to change, what I take from Mosman Carers Group is a feeling of not being alone to face the journey." Annette said "we all understand what each of us is going through, we can laugh, exchange experiences, learn from one another and provide support and understanding." Susan said, " the regularity and frequency makes for very effective meetings and the speakers are excellent. There is a feeling of belonging in the group, this reduces the feeling of isolation so prevalent for carers. Friends and relatives often don't know what to do or say so stay away." And Jenny, who said " I particularly enjoy the speakers who cover an array of subjects, they are mindful of our needs and give sage advice on keeping Carers healthy and well informed. Thank you to the group for making my life so much more ordered and bearable."

The group meets every Wednesday morning with discussions, guest speakers, information, laughter and sharing. Some people are happy to share their experiences, some prefer just to listen, you can arrive late, leave early and attend when able, there is no pressure.

MY STORY

Betty Gemmell

I was born on the 11th May 1917 at my maternal Grandparent’s farm, four miles out of the Riverina town of Berrigan. Berrigan did not have a doctor in residence until a number of years later. I am the first born of seven and can call myself a great ‘farm lady’. How I loved that farm and Grandma - actually we all did, my two sisters and four brothers spent school holidays as often as possible at ‘Hazen Farm’. Until the age of 10 we were living on properties in other Riverina areas; loving every minute of life - our ponies, the sheep, cattle, dogs, cats, and chickens made our life fun and educational. When Dad gained his accountancy degree, (by correspondence), we moved into Deniliquin where we lived most of our lives. Dad had his own accountancy business. While on the properties our education was by correspondence which Mother supervised. Then into B-I-G school. It was not easy to accept having to sit inside with so many other children for most of the day for my brother John and me. On leaving school aged 16 it was it was time to look for a career. I had always dreamt of being a doctor or a nurse but at 16 it was too early to start. So for 2 years I worked as a book keeper in a small station and farm supplier’s office. The starting wage was one pound and ten shillings per week and two pounds, ten shillings when I left. At 18 I found that to do medicine you needed a top pass in Latin which meant nursing was next my next option. Here again I struck a hitch so into another waiting time job. When World War 2 broke out I was approached by the Bank of Australasia to work in the local branch in Deniliquin. Then aged 23 it proved to be a rewarding 38 years in banking – hard years at times but worth it. I was one of the first women to become a fully qualified bank officer. It was in my early 30’s that I was sent to Sydney where I worked until retiring at 60; the compulsory retirement age for we women. The biggest mistake I made on retirement was not going home to Deniliquin to live. I had become a city-ite! How lucky I have been to have had both country and city life styles – guess it would almost be half and half. The biggest change in my 99 years? Of course it is the mechanical takeover of manual labour which has brought about many good changes to our lives but I think it has gone far too far and borders on disaster for us as ‘Humans’ and I would like things mechanical to S-T-O-P now! I hope all this has not bored you but it is written with sincerity and my life as a member of a wonderful family; Mother, Father, and 6 siblings; a family of love, sadness and helping each other. My motto is ‘Talk to each other more often’. Happy New year to all and a big thank you to Karen Scott and to the Mosman Council Community Care Team for always looking after me.

If you have a story you would like to share contact us on 9978 4128 or e-mail community.care@mosman.nsw.gov.au to book an interview or submit your story! 13
