Tax help from July!

Dear Readers, Welcome to your Winter edition of AHE Newsletter! The cold front has arrived. Make sure you keep warm, and stay safe by checking that your fire alarms are in working order. On this note, do not forget that it's the law to have at least one working smoke alarm installed on every level of your home. This includes owner occupied homes, rental properties, relocatable homes, caravans and camper-vans or any other residential building where people sleep. So this winter, stay warm, and stay safe! There are many changes at the Centre and at Mosman Community Care this quarter; Zumba is moving to Friday mornings (9.30 - 10.15 am). We encourage everyone this winter to join an activity like Zumba or any of the other exercise programs we are hosting. The Music Lunchtime Concerts (4th Thursday of the month, 1.00-2.30pm) started in April, to the beautiful guitar of Carlos Perez. We then had a preview of Ben Noir's French cabaret in May, and we have a load of great musicians, ensembles and singers lined up for the next few months. Call the office on 9978 4128 for any further information and to join us for this great program. The VIEW Club (Voice, Interest and Education of Women) also started meeting in Mosman; and it's been a long time coming! We are still adjusting times and location but at the moment, they meet on the 3rd Friday of the month from 2.30 to 4.30pm at the Seniors’ Centre after the Community Restaurant. VIEW Club provides women with the opportunity to meet regularly with other women from all walks of life, establish lasting friendships and help disadvantaged Australian children through supporting the work of the children’s charity The Smith Family. It also empowers women to have their voices heard on issues of importance for the future wellbeing of Australian society. We encourage everyone to join the VIEW Club. For more information contact Franci on 0402 094 563. The Tax Help Program will also be back at the centre this year again. The program is a network of ATO-trained and accredited community volunteers who provide a free and confidential service to help people complete their tax returns online using myTax. If you have fairly simple tax affairs (conditions apply), and you earned $60,000 or less for the income year, you can join the program. We will be running it from the centre between July and October. Contact us early in July if you need help. We hope to see you soon at the centre! Mosman Community Care. Team community.care@mosman.nsw.gov.au 02 9978 4128

COMMUNITY SUPPORT

Be active, healthy and engaged

Care Program - Individual support Our Care Program is designed to support older adults in the community who are most frail. Using a person-centred approach, the person’s needs and wishes are identified in the initial visit and appropriate connections made. Our Community Support Officers and volunteers regularly visit you to see how you are going and if you need extra help to remain living independently at home as long as possible. We work WITH you to identify your needs and provide useful support. Support includes:  One to one Support  Shopping  Outings  Companionship  Art at home program  Computer Aid program

Call us on 9978 4119 or 9978 4128 to find out more

We can speak to you over the phone, arrange a friendly home visit, or meet you here at our Centre or anywhere in the community you feel comfortable. We can also help you register with My Aged Care, the Federal Government’s gateway to all aged care needs.

New Fees and Charges Arrangements Effective 1 July 2017 From 1 July 2017, the way Mosman Council charges for its aged services will change. This is because the subsidy we receive from the Commonwealth Government to run our services has been changed, and we need to meet their new requirements. The changes apply to services you may receive from the following Council services:  Community Transport  Social Support and Neighbor Aid  Food Services, including Meals on Wheels and the Community Restaurant Simply put, if you are eligible to receive a subsidy under what is called the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) and have been referred to us through My Aged Care (MAC), you will continue to receive the subsidised rate. If you are not eligible or have not been referred to us through MAC, then we are required to charge you the full rate. If you are on a Home Care Package, your package provider will receive your subsidy through your package so your fees to use our services will be managed accordingly. We need your permission to contact your package provider to set this up. If you need any more information, please do not hesitate to contact us on 9978 4128 or by email community.care@mosman.nsw.gov.au or My Aged Care (the Commonwealth Government) on https://www.myagedcare.gov.au/getting-started or by phone on 1800 200 422.

VOLUNTEERS WEEK

Be active, healthy and engaged

The annual Volunteer Reception for Mosman Council volunteers was held in early May, at the Gunners Barracks in Mosman. This event was an opportunity to give thanks to our dedicated volunteers who do such a great job in and for our community. Did you know that 323 volunteers give their time and love for causes that range from delivering Mosman Meals to cleaning up the bush and harbour, encouraging people to learn computers, keeping Mosman's history alive and conducting tours in the Gallery. Everyday our volunteers enhance the quality of life for older people in our community, help to reduce social isolation and provide vital services to maintain older people’s independence living in their home. If you would like to volunteer please contact Steven Walker on 9978 4216 or s.walker@mosman.nsw.gov.au

OLDER ADULTS TIPS FOR LONG LIFE What’s the secret of a long and healthy life? All centenarians have their own habits and morning routines by which they swear. She’s 117, he’s 110 and they have very different secrets to living a long life. 1. Patience: The world’s oldest man, Mban Gotho, who lived to 146 years, said he owes his long life to patience. “The recipe is just patience,” he told to the Independent Newspaper. 2. Eggs: Italian woman Emma Morano who lived to 117 said the key to her long life had been eggs, and cookies. “I eat two eggs a day, and that’s it. And cookies. But I do not eat much because I have no teeth,” she told AFP news agency. 3. Joy: Yasutaro Koide who lived to 112 said the key to a long life was to “live with joy”. The Japanese native passed away last year. He told the Telegraph, “The best thing to do is avoid overwork and live with joy.” 4. Staying active: Jeanne Louise Calment was a French woman who died in 1997 at the age of 122. Never having worked a day in her life, Calment stayed healthy by spending her days swimming, playing tennis, cycling (until the age of 100) and roller-skating, according to Guinness World Records. 5. Bacon: Susannah Mushatt Jones, a 116-year-old American who died last year, reportedly ate bacon for breakfast and as a snack every day of her life. She also liked to sleep a lot and didn't drink or smoke. "I surround myself with love and positive energy. That's the key to long life and happiness," the ABC reports. 6. Whiskey, Coffee and Cigars: At age 111, Richard Overton, America’s oldest veteran is still smoking cigars, drinking whisky and loving life. In a short film made by National Geographic, the vet said ”I just sit there and smoke sometimes 12 cigars a day. Maybe sometimes more than that. I drink about four cups of coffee in the morning. This morning I drank about that much whiskey”. 7. Walking: Australia's oldest person was Ethel Farrell, who at the age of 113 might owe her lasting health to her lifetime habit of walking everywhere. "She's always been a very busy person, and walked everywhere," daughter Deidre told The Australian. What would be your tips for a long and healthy life? We would love to hear from you by email at community.care@mosman.nws.gov.au or at our reception desk.

YOUR RIGHTS AS CONSUMER “As a consumer, it is important to know your rights and what help is available if you have problems. Telemarketing, online shopping and online banking are growing industries that have brought many benefits for consumers, but also some risks. Dodgy salespeople and businesses may use email, telephone, mail, and door-to-door sales to take advantage of you. They may also use high-pressure, misleading and confusing sales tactics to get consumers to sign contracts they don’t understand. This means consumers can be locked into contracts they can’t pay for and may become involved in legal action. Here are some tips to help you: Telemarketers There are rules! They may only call you between certain hours (weekdays between 9 am and 8 pm and Saturdays between 9 am and 5 pm) and let you know that you have a 10 day ‘cooling off’ period to cancel the contract if you buy something. They must send you the agreement in writing. If you do not want telemarketers to phone you, add your number to the Do Not Call Register by calling 1300 792 958 or by visiting www.donotcall.gov.au. Door to door sales If you buy something from a door-to-door salesperson they must also give you a 10 day ‘cooling off’ period to cancel the contract. If you do not wants sales people to visit your house you can display a ‘Do Not Knock’ sticker next to your door or on the gatepost of your house. Door-to-door salespersons can be fined if they refuse to leave your home or if they ignore a ‘Do Not Knock’ sticker. Find out how to get a sticker at www.donotknock.org.au. Quick rules of thumb to help protect you and your money: - Do not agree to offers or deals straight away if you are unsure about them. Get independent advice before making decision. And remember the old saying: “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is”. - Spam mail and phishing: Ignore suspicious emails, and delete them if unknown recipients. Scammers want you to send personal information or pay upfront fee. - Keep your computer secure and choose strong passwords. - Never send money to someone you don’t know. - Don’t give out personal information if not sure who you’re talking to. - If you think you’ve seen a scam, let someone know. Report it to www.scamwatch.com.au Electronic banking Never share your PIN or password with anyone. Keep them in a safe place, separate from your debit or credit cards. If lost or stolen, tell your bank immediately. Australians of all ages have the right to be treated fairly and enjoy the same opportunities as others. Anti-discrimination laws protect individuals from discrimination on the basis of age in many areas of public life including employment, accommodation, provision of good and services. If you experience discrimination, you can complain to the Australian Human Rights Commission on 02 9284 9600 or 1300 369 711 or visit www.humanrights.gov.au.
